Kuwait

recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of its National Day and 20th Anniversary of its Liberation Day with great pomp and flair. I was especially amazed by the spectacular firework display and the laser show that illuminated the night sky at the Kuwait Towers. Cool and Juicy Yogurt. Expect Stimulating Tastes

friends and I were walking down the street, the weather was mild and we were all having a good time. What more could anyone ask for? “How about something sweet? Nothing better to end this enjoyable day than a tasty treat!” We were feeling adventurous so we thoughts of trying out a new place. We arrived at a trendy-looking yogurt shop across from the American University and we unanimously agreed we should try it out. The colors of the shop were attractive and the pictures of the frozen yogurt were equally appealing. The ambience of the store is cheery and upbeat; it encourages one to relax and enjoy the experience. The place is brightly lit and colorfully chic in a range of light tones. The five of us were expecting to choose from a limited list but what a wonderful surprise, there were seven different flavors of frozen yogurt and a wonderful choice of fresh fruit toppings. It allowed us an opportunity to share among ourselves our unique concoctions to double the fun we were having. The attendants were very welcoming and gave free samples on small spoons. I tried the Taro and found it yummy but it did not suit my palate. They even add extra toppings for new customers. How awesome is that!! Being the picky type, I chose a plain frozen yogurt and green tea. It was rich and just the right temperature. I savored every bite. Then I scooped little bits from my friends’ cups, I just couldn’t resist, it was all so tempting. When you enter the shop and are confronted with such a wide selection of mouth-

watering deliciousness, you are overwhelmed with the need to try everything. The vanilla flavor had just the right kind of sweetness, I liked it but unfortunately my friend guarded the rest with his life. The banana flavor was incredibly tasty, especially if you choose the mango toppings or maybe you would prefer strawberries. Lisa certainly did but I really couldn’t stand a fruit mixture of sweet and tart. The chocolate flavor was equally perfect; it was the right creamy texture. I was glad that Ahmed did not add any toppings because that would just ruin the flavor. In my opinion, chocolate should be enjoyed as is but you can add choco chips or almonds as toppings and mix it into the frozen yogurt for added flavor. The retailer has only eight varieties of flavors on display but the brand is associated with 22 flavors. They are divided into Flavor-Creamy and Flavor-Tart. The toppings are of an interesting variety from fruits like kiwi, pineapple to chestnuts and fruity pubbles. I spoke to the owner of the shop regarding his plans for the frozen yogurt stand as the company’s future did indeed look promising. However, there is a lot of competition from other frozen yogurt stands and other sweet treats available in Kuwait. From what he told me, customers can have great expectations from the store. Tutti Frutti plans to change its menu every three months; different flavors will be available for customers to savor, offering a new experience each time they visit. Also, there will be extra additions to the toppings tray. At Tutti Frutti, it is all about appeasing the customers tastes by allowing them the chance to enjoy an assortment of delectables. Tutti Frutti is giving special discounts for students, which is just wonderful. American University students will be excited to know that they can avail of an offer made especially for them, at a convenient location. Tutti Frutti does not only want to appeal to the hip youngsters. Parents frequent the retail outlet for their nutritious frozen yogurt and often bring their children with them. Tutti Frutti will soon start providing cones for the kids so they can enjoy their frozen yogurt the kid’s way instead of eating from cups. Cones are a more kidfriendly attraction. Encouraging your child to eat frozen yogurt is the best approach to emphasizing healthy eating habits. What separates Tutti Frutti from other frozen yogurt outlets? Strange Foods from The World

Dende Oil (Brazil)

Cane Rat (China)

This dislike is a purely subjective one. Dende oil is the cooking medium for much of the fried food in the Bahia region of Brazil. It is extracted from local palm trees, and the origins of its use go back to the cooking methods of African slaves. The taste of anything cooked in the oil is very strong, but you are unlikely to get that far, as the smell is reminiscent of an unwashed armpit.

I totally understand that people have to use what resources are available to them to survive. However, the sight of a dried cane rat at a food stall in Yangshuo, in southern China, was not a particularly welcome one. Being a culinary adventurer, I felt obliged to try it. What can I say? It tasted just as one would imagine a dead dried rat would taste. Let us never speak of it again.

Kopi Luwak (Sumatra) Time to fess up: I have never tried this one. Not because I have any great fear of drinking something that has passed through the digestive system of the Asian palm civet and then been collected by rummaging around in its feces, but because coffee is one of two things to which I am allergic (the other being oysters). Apparently kopi luwak is the most expensive brew on earth, so maybe I am missing something. I can learn to live with not knowing. Balut (Philippines) Let a fertilized duck or chicken egg develop until it is embryonic. Boil it and serve with chili vinegar, and you have balut, the street food of discerning Filipinos. There is a strict etiquette to eating balut. First, sip the liquid from the shell. Next, chew the remaining contents, making sure to crack the bones for good measure, and then toss the shell on the ground. For me, the only rule is to run as fast as possible in the other direction if I am ever offered one again. Cod Sperm (Japan) In the spirit of adventure and so as not to lose face in front of a crowd of smart Japanese businessmen, I tried these small white sacks of slimy unpleasantness in a trendy sushi bar in Kyoto. I threw up, and they laughed a great deal. Braised Dog (China) I am not particularly sentimental and don’t have any great issue with people eating Fido if that is what their customs dictate. For the record, the meat tastes like gamy pork. However, once I found out that cooks like to beat the dog while it is still alive, believing that the added adrenaline in the meat will give virility to those who eat it, I made a vow never to touch it again.

Durian (Southeast Asia) Signs bearing the silhouette of a large prickly fruit with a line through it can be found on the doors of hotels, buses and trains throughout Southeast Asia. They are a firm warning that the dreaded durian is not welcome, and it is easy to understand why. Although the taste of the fruit is not at all unpleasant, the smell is enough to peel the skin off one’s face from one hundred paces away. Airag (Mongolia) They say Mongolians are born in the saddle and die in the saddle, and it is certainly true that the horse is vital to their nomadic lifestyle. They also eat plenty of horsemeat and manage to consume almost four liters of mare’s milk a day. Mare's milk is fermented in a cowhide container until it is a potent 5% ABV: having tried it, I have to wonder how any of Mongolians manage to stay in the saddle at all. Hákarl (Iceland) At some point in distant history, a hungry Icelander thought that if he buried a basking shark in a pit of gravel and snow for up to 12 weeks and then left it to dry for a few months more, it would make for a lovely little snack. It doesn’t, and the long curing process of hákarl actually produces arguably the single most unpleasant thing to eat on the whole planet.

The man who is dubbed as the next Michael Jackson. Is he really the right one? Since King of Pop Michael Jackson’s death last year, music fans had been on the look out for the one who will next in line. And the name that comes to many people’s mind? You'll be surprise to know that he is the guy. He is no other than... USHER!

must be overwhelmed being compared to someone like Michael Jackson whose proven track record in the music scene was unprecedented. Michael Jackson who has a great and colorful career (not to mention that he had been long enough in the center stage to be proclaimed as the King of Pop) is one of the greatest entertainers, or more fitting to say, the greatest entertainer to have ever lived. The comparison could be an ultimate compliment for him. However , comparing the two, Usher, an R&B singer needs a lot of catching up to do. Although he has his own solid achievements such as being a Grammy award winner, a best-selling artist whose 2004 album titled “Confessions” sold a moving 20 million copies and, he is also a total entertainer. More, and like Michael Jackson’s, Usher’s songs are very personal of which some have even been interpreted as accurate narratives of his private life (such as of the high-profile break-ups and divorce) as he

aims for his music ” to speak about life’s experiences, not just my own, but other people’s ,too” to quote him during an interview of some press people from the entertainment industry. Well, it is going to be a long journey for Usher still and the best is still yet to come. Music fans will always have their eyes on him or on others,too, looking forward to hearing more music that fills the soul and touches the lives of many people. Many singers will come and go , but there will only be one King of Pop the music fans will remember for the longest time and that is Michael Jackson.

Social Media Pros and Cons We often exult the greatness of social media, but in our euphoria we sometimes overlook the dark side of social media. I thought it would be helpful to put together a quick pros and cons list so that if you are engaging with social media for your company that you can go in with eyes wide open.

Cons: Erik Qualman

Pros:  Low hard costs compared to traditional marketing like print, television, outdoor, etc.  Quick, honest, and detailed feedback from the customer.  Allows for deeper engagements with customers.  Similar to great brand marketing and customer service, the benefits of doing social media right can last for years.  Every customer and employee is a potential media outlet: social media is word of mouth on digital steroids.  In the past, companies that had the most money to spend on marketing often won, today it's the company that produces great products and experiences for their customers.  Social media takes time and effort. Many companies aren't willing to do this, hence those companies that put forth the extra effort will stand out.  If you are a progressive company you can use these tools to effectively recruit new talent.

 Often, many benefits of social media are seen in the months to come rather than immediately. It shouldn't be viewed like Google AdWords, which has a quick return. It should be viewed more like brand marketing and good customer service, which pays off in the future.  Tools can quickly change; one day it is MySpace, Orkut, Friendster, and Bebo; the next day it's Facebook and Mixi.  There are a lot of hidden soft costs: it takes time to develop relationships with customers. In the offline world, developing relationships takes time and effort – the same holds true within social media.  May reduce the amount of face-to-face communication we have with one another, diminishing on interpersonal communication skills.  If the customer feels they haven't been treated appropriately, they have powerful tools at their disposal (YouTube, Twitter, etc.) to express their side of the story and negatively impact a brand reputation.  Often we turn over our brand ownership to employees and customers and they can take us places we don't want to go. Just like anything, there are some cons to social media. However, advantages outweigh the disadvantages and even if they didn't, we don't have a choice on whether we do social media. The question is how well we do it. The worst thing to do, is to do nothing.

While searching some interesting material for our readers, I came across an abandoned castle discovered in Spain. I'm quite intrigued by it and thought you would be too. I wish someone knew the story behind the castle and it's inhabitants but that story and the location of this place even, seems to be a mystery. Just look at the beautiful canopy and detailed carpets in the master bedroom. The owners clearly left in somewhat of a hurry. Their stockings are still lying out on the bed... The kid’s room is amazing!.

10 Commandments of

Modern Marketing Augustine Fou

Some people start the new year with resolutions. I thought, why not start 2011 with 10 commandments for marketing -- resolutions to do marketing right; that is, marketing that takes into account how the modern landscape and modern consumers have changed.

Thou shalt not target customers with messages they don't want. No matter how targeted the advertiser thinks the message is, it's still not targeted, relevant, or timely enough. Gardening equipment ads in gardening magazines, cosmetic ads in fashion magazines, or aftershave ads in guys' magazines are all better than no targeting at all. But modern consumers are so overwhelmed with information that they generally ignore ads and tune everything out. Studies have shown that 1) ad recall is at an all time low, 2) banner ad click-through rates are usually rounding-errors to zero - i.e., very, very low, and 3) consumers' eyes avoid the top and right of Web pages because they know that's where ads are typically placed. Also, minivan ads may be perfectly targeted using demographics and day-part, but they still don't take into account variables like the fact that the consumer may have just purchased one. There are simply too many variables that affect purchases by any given individual that the targeting schemes of mass media fail to account for. There are far more effective and measurable alternatives to broadcasting general messages out to large audiences using one-way media like TV, print, and radio -- so the sun is setting on the era of big "push" advertising.

Thou shalt be truthful. Advertisers can no longer lie, exaggerate, spin, or tell half-truths about their product or service. If they do, they will be found out and called out. One consumer found an anti-consumer clause in the fine print of his cell phone agreement and posted it to Consumerist.com. It led to a firestorm of publicity that forced the telecommunications company to issue a public statement that they would remove that clause (which said they could kick any user off the network for any reason). A user posted a video of how to pick an expensive Kryptonite bike lock in seconds using a plastic Bic pen. Consumers called out Best Buy for its "pre-optimized" computers. And movie marketing used to excerpt the best scenes from the film to use in glossy TV ads. Turns out, if those were the only good scenes in the whole film, the movie will head straight to DVD no matter how much money was poured into the saturation marketing campaign. The voice of the people in reviews will still drown it out. Any claim has to be backed up by an awesome product or service.

Thou shalt respect your customers. Consumers are empowered with information and with connected peers who help them vet, filter, and prioritize what is important and useful to them. They will quickly find out when reviews, blog posts, or tweets are paid for or planted, like in the case of Belkin. Advertisers also need to respect consumers' privacy, their intelligence and resourcefulness, and their power, or else suffer the consequences. Facebook tested a few schemes that were quickly quashed by consumers who felt it overstepped the boundaries of decent advertiser behavior -- 1) beacon -- a consumer's friends are alerted when they visit other third-party Web sites and look at products; the feature was launched as an opt-out and most consumers objected; 2) social ads -- a consumer's image and likeness was used near an ad, which resulted in friends being tricked into thinking they endorsed the advertiser or product; again, consumers had to manually change a setting to disallow this. With the collective "eyes on," consumers can easily overcome any advertiser behaving badly.

Thou shalt make it easy for people to find you. If the above three commandments put a damper on "push" advertising, this commandment makes it explicit that it's equally important to balance it with "pull" techniques -- make your information more or most easily findable by customers when they search for it. When modern consumers become aware of a product or service, they typically do some more

research on their own online. The higher the cost of the item, the more complex it is, or the higher consideration it is, the more research that will be done. Advertisers have historically spent the bulk of their dollars pushing messages out at people when they don't want it, and not enough time, effort, or dollars on when they do want it. The result is that if the consumers can't find your information, or worse if they find the information of your competitors first, you lose.

Thou shalt be useful. It goes without saying that the products or services being advertised must be useful in and of themselves. If they are frivolous, unnecessary, or just nice-to-haves, they will be the first to be cut when consumers' spending gets tight. Today, however, even the marketing of the product or service needs to be useful or else consumers won't use it and will definitely not pass it along. People need help making purchase decisions. A "how-to" video showing how to set up a home theater system is useful and may help one advertiser win the purchase over another similarly spec'ed and similarly priced system. Intel's live chats where the actual engineers who made the technologies talk with information technology professionals considering buying those technologies were extremely useful in answering questions too esoteric or specific to ever be included in marketing materials. Chipotle's iPhone app for pre-ordering, Netflix's Facebook Fan Page for gathering feedback and ideas, and JetBlue's Twitter for customer service are useful applications.

Thou shalt make it easy for people to pass along. Word of mouth is one of the most powerful influences on customers' purchases because it doesn't come from the marketer and isn't marketing. Recommendations can come from friends, whom the customer trusts to have sufficient knowledge about specific things to recommend -- e.g., an HDTV guru, a digital camera enthusiast, or a foodie; or it can come from groups of strangers -- e.g., the 250 people who reviewed a camcorder on Amazon and all consistently rated it four+ stars out of five. Word of mouth is not something that can or should be done by advertisers. But advertisers can indeed make it easier for consumers to pass-along information or make recommendations at or near the moment of inspiration -- by doing simple things like adding "share this" links on everything, everywhere. Also, mobile devices are allowing consumers to be constantly connected, and, if they are so inspired, they can write a review even while savoring the last tasty morsel at that awesome restaurant.

Thou shalt measure and optimize. With more and more information, conversations, and actions going online, advertisers have more data than ever to determine what marketing is working and also to optimize it even while campaigns are still in process. With digital tools, devices, and channels data and feedback can be obtained virtually in real time. This contrasts to the extremely long lead times for creating, placing, and airing ads through traditional channels like TV, print, and radio. Click rates are one indicator of which ads are working better than others. Relative search volume can not only indicate interest but can even be used to optimize the words used in marketing materials -- e.g., if more consumers search "ten commandments" than "10 commandments," then the former term should be used. And finally, the words that consumers use to find information or the questions they are most frequently asking online can enable advertisers to optimize content or even create new content (to answer the questions).

Thou shalt listen to customers. People talk when they really hate something or when they really love it. More and more people are doing such ranting or raving about stuff online, and these are the absolute best customers to be listening to. The ones who love your product will tell you what you're doing right. The ones who hate your product will reveal ways you can improve your product or even make derivative products to fit their expectations and needs. There are dozens of tools for "listening" online, for pure, unadulterated feedback from large numbers of customers; but advertisers still too often use the inaccurate, subjective, taintable, and non-statistically significant output of focus groups for business decision making. If consumers are frequently asking about the low light performance of digital cameras, advertisers can update their marketing materials to address these questions or tout their features. If they don't actually have the feature, they can go build it. Starbucks's MyStarbucksIdea.com, Dell's IdeaStorm, and LEGO's continuous interaction and collaboration with enthusiasts goes a long way in helping them stay ahead through innovation -inventions that actual customers want instead of something dreamed up in the lab by product development people.

Thou shalt remove any organizational barriers to speedy, collaborative innovation. If your sales and marketing people don't meet with or talk with your product development people more than once a year at a holiday party then you've got a problem. The people who are at the "front lines" communicating with customers and hearing their needs and challenges with using the product, etc. are the best people to feed new ideas to the product development teams so they can rapidly improve the product or service. Many organizations are set up such that product development is off on their own and separate from sales and marketing. Often the sales and marketing teams are also separated; not to mention the "budget-divide." Marketing is off brainstorming grandiose brand colors, attributes, and phrases -- oblivious to how a sales person actually just closed a deal by explaining a key detail to a buyer. Organizational divides and the lack of fluid knowledge sharing and transfer very often hinder the innovativeness of companies. And speedy innovation is fast becoming an essential ingredient to survival in the new digital world. No longer does it hold true that first-to-market will win; fast followers who can out-innovate the pioneer can win too -- see Vizio, the number one HDTV manufacturer in the U.S. by sales. It actually has technologically superior products that cost less than its far larger competitors.

Thou shalt not do brand-ing. If advertisers have faithfully followed the previous nine commandments, they are unlikely to "sin" against this one. Brand-ing (with a dash) is the act of telling customers what a brand is. Most traditional ads are designed to do this -- TV ads designed to evoke "emotion," etc. But have you noticed that most car ads look the same now -- young person driving fast down an imaginary road set to rock music? Not exactly helpful to a modern consumer who is intelligent, informed, and empowered. Also, do brand taglines like Wendy's "you know when it's real" or costly rebrandings like Tropicana's failed package redesign (which included an orangeshaped cap designed to "evoke the notion of squeezing the orange") do anything for the modern consumer? On the other hand Sweetriot came out of nowhere, used no paid advertising of any kind, and relied entirely on social marketing techniques to create a sustained upward spiral of sales. Its down-to-earth brand reputation was earned over time through consistent stewardship of every interaction with customers, backed up by awesome products. The moral of this story is that a brand is something earned over time, like reputation, and not something that advertisers can simply tell consumers they are anymore. So, if advertisers follow some or all of these 10 commandments, they could probably better prioritize their dollars, and also improve the effectiveness of their marketing in the modern digital world.

cannot understand the greatness of a person having a day dedicated solely to them. There are special qualities in such a person that it obliges a day to highlight them for others to emulate. The world grows darker by the second and every little celebration of human kindness, love and selflessness illuminates the heavens. We feel less alone, less afraid and are reminded of why we can continue to believe in the positive. Mother’s Day is one such day. What makes it doubly special is that it is not “A” person we are honoring but many women who have touched their children’s lives. All over the world, there are amazing stories of mothers fighting for the sake of their children, sometimes against unbelievable odds. A woman in northern Quebec protected her children from a huge polar bear. The bear was poised to seriously injure three children but their mother stepped into the bear’s path in the nick of time. Rita Fedrizzi, an Italian woman discovered she had cancer and was pregnant around the same time. She refused cancer treatment because it would have harmed her baby. Her death came three months later after giving birth to a baby boy. She was considered for sainthood. Even in the Middle East there are numerous stories of women who have faced social stigma, poverty and tribulation to fight for a better life for themselves and their children. Mothers have vast reserves of strength, limitless compassion and profound, deep-seeded love for their children. The fight for a better world for their children and themselves has not been easy or even safe with the threat of death hanging over many women’s head. Nevertheless, women continue to fight everyday for their right to be treated well, to be able to go into the workplace and earn money to support their families and freedom for their daughters to pursue education. In countries that are still under strife and oppression, it is the mothers who know suffering and want to ease their children’s burden. Social change has moved forward because women have been in the forefront keeping the fate of their children in mind. They think of their daughters who will be raised in a society that values them less or about their sons who will be bought on violence and a skewed sense of moral justice. There is no stronger bond than a mother for her children and good mothers want nothing but the best for their children. ‘What does it mean to be a mother? In Mumbai, under the flyover at the Bandra-Mahim junction towards Worli Sea Link, there is a metal sculpture of a mother emblazoned with the quote, “A child gives birth to its mother.” When you reflect on this quote, you realize that the very experience of entering motherhood can change a woman. Men too find themselves altered when they stare into the face of their new born child. When you have another human being, wholly innocent and dependent, you cannot be the same person you were. There are mothers who give up their jobs to be with their children while others go back to work. Sacrifice is apparent in the actions of both women because either way the mother is surrendering something of herself for the sake of her children. Who’s to say who is right? I know my mother could not give up her job to look after my brother and me. Luckily, she had the support of my father to share the tasks. They both had jobs and responsibilities, no help from relatives or friends. But they still fulfilled their duty to us as parents. There are fathers who can be seen

Christina Pinto as mothers too. Though there is a Father’s Day, it somehow does not have the same connotations as Mother’s Day. For the fathers who shower similar love and nurturing care on their children, often when the mother is away, they deserve a special mention on Mother’s Day. Mother’s day embodies the very essence of a mother and on this day, much good can be done. You can show the mother who has bequeathed you so much love and devotion, your undying gratitude. It can also be a day for mothers to unite for social activism as was the original purpose. The reason behind advocating Mother’s Day was to commemorate woman’s public activism. In the 1870’s, the Franco-Prussian war was raging, claiming countless of lives. One woman, Julia Howe, decided to rally woman together as mothers to protest the war. She called it the Mother’s Day for Peace and to vocalize its message wrote a Mother’s Day Proclamation. The strongest words of the proclamation that resonate the sentiments of the woman, one of the founders of Mother’s Day are, “Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says "Disarm, Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice." As the world is troubled by news of conflict, the spirit of Mother’s Day should be especially taken to heart. Mother’s Day was about honoring selfless people who thought of others and were willing to give up themselves for a much nobler cause. Hallmark cards, gifts and little thoughtful presents are flashed in shopping windows as the perfect gifts to bestow on your mother, on this special day. However, can’t you think of a better Mother’s Day present? How about showing your mother the amazing person you are and reward her for the effort she has expended to instill in you morals, compassion and kindness. If there is anything more satisfying to a mother, it is being reassured that the milk of her labor has not gone in vain. You carry all the good from your parents, who have cherished you from birth. To truly have a Happy Mother’s Day, let their greatness shine through you!!

our modern society, skyscrapers are often taken for granted as just another sign of urbanization, but imagine how incredible one of these massive structures would be to someone born a few hundred years ago. Of course, if you want to see some incredible towers that will impress even the most jaded city dweller, you should take a gander at this round-up of 14 unbelievably cool skyscrapers, including the wooden one pictured. Russia’s wooden skyscraper is believed to be the tallest wooden house in the world at 144 feet and 13 stories. Nikolai Sutyagin, a former gangster, spent 15 years continuously adding additional floors to his home because he was never satisfied with the way it looked. This wooden skyscraper is in serious disrepair, slowly collapsing and neighbors are worried about it catching fire, but it certainly makes for a great photograph.

There’s the inside-out skyscraper, the horizontal skyscraper and the wooden skyscraper. There’s a bizarre three-towered structure made to vaguely resemble an elephant, tusks and all. And then there’s the giant pickle. These 14 buildings are among the most bizarre in the world, and they stand out all the more for their sheer height.

1. Genex Tower, Belgrade, Serbia It’s the third-largest building in Europe, designed to look like a huge gate greeting visitors as they arrive in Belgrade from the west. But Genex Tower is hardly a welcoming sight to many, called “phenomenally ugly” in more than one place on the internet and dismissed as one of the worst examples of Brutalist Architecture. The twin concrete towers, joined together by a revolving restaurant, are certainly among the stranger skyscrapers in the world.

2. Ryugyong Hotel, Pyongyang, North Korea Is this the world’s ugliest skyscraper? Veiled in secrecy in North Korea, the Ryugyong Hotel sat in construction limbo for so long that people thought it had been abandoned. Its unusual triangular shape paired with a raw concrete finish made it a bit of a laughingstock among architecture enthusiasts, though recent changes since construction resumed have made it look a bit less severe.

3. Elephant Building, Bangkok, Thailand Perhaps the architects who designed this bizarre building in Bangkokstepped back from their plans and thought, hmmm, this set of three concrete blocks needs something. We know – round windows for eyes and shapes that vaguely suggest ears and tusks! Or something.

4. Robot Building, Bangkok, Thailand When you spot this skyscraper in the Bangkok cityscape, there’s no question of what it’s supposed to be. The Robot Building was designed for the Bank of Asia to reflect the computerization of banking and is one of the last examples of modern architecture in the city. Architect Sumet Jumsai, who reportedly

found inspiration in his son’s robot toy, made the building so blocky as a protest against the neoclassical and high-tech postmodern architecture that was sweeping the world in the early to mid 1980s.

5. CCTV Headquarters, Beijing, China This 44-story skyscraper, which serves as the headquarters for China Central Television in Beijing, earned the nickname “big boxer shorts” soon after completion in 2009 for its rather unusual shape. It’s described as a loop of six horizontal and vertical sections and figuring out how to translate the design into a structural reality was no easy task, especially in a seismic zone.

6. Torre Velasca, Milan, Italy Why is that tower shaped like a mushroom? Standing tall in the city center of Milan, the Torre Velasca definitely contrasts with surrounding architecture, though it was designed to be a modern interpretation of typical Italian medieval castles when it was created in 1954. It’s a divisive presence in the city, with some residents regarding it with affection and others bemoaning its dominance of the skyline.

7. Kingdom Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia With its unusual keyhole design, the Kingdom Centre in Riyadh would be a standout even if it weren’t Saudi Arabia’s tallest skyscraper and the world’s second tallest mosque. Also known as Burj Al-Mamlaka, the Kingdom Centre was selected as the world’s most well-designed skyscraper in the 2002 Emporis Skyscraper Awards. The architects created the keyhole in the top in order to conform to city laws that don’t allow occupied floors above a certain height.

The Lloyds of London building is undeniably weird between its mish-mash of architectural styles and the bizarre jumble of structures clinging to its exterior. The building, which has all of its ‘guts’ including water pipes and elevators on the outside, was ostensibly designed this way so that the interior would remain uncluttered. Whether or not this approach worked (bottom two photos) is perhaps a matter of personal opinion.

9. Lippo Centre, Hong Kong Distinctive? Definitely. Dubbed the ‘koala tree’ for its resemblance to koalas clinging to a trunk, the Lippo Centre in Hong Kong is unlike any other office building in the world. American architect Paul Rudolph hoped to make these towers less severe with C-shaped clusters of windows that stand out in relief against the exterior.

Wooden Skyscraper, Archangelsk, Russia Built by a single man out of an improbable material, Russia’s wooden skyscraper is believed to be the tallest wooden house in the world at 144 feet and 13 stories. They’re more like towering sculptures. But the steel pipe, rod and wire structures are undoubtedly landmarks in the Watts district of Los Angeles and are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Umeda Sky Building, Osaka, Japan Strange and futuristic, the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka features bridges and a glass-enclosed elevator that criss-cross the empty space between two towers, which are connected at the top by a rooftop observatory. The building is so tall, it provides a 360-degree view of the city.

13. Norman Foster Gherkin, London, England It’s been called Gherkin, Towering Innuendo and Crystal Phallus, but the unorthodox building that stands out like a sore thumb in London is officially known as 30 St Mary Axe. Designed by Norman Foster, the skyscraper was purchased for over a billion U.S. dollars, making it Britain’s most expensive office building.

14. Vanke Center, Shenzen, China Who ever heard of a horizontal skyscraper? It may sound strange, but it actually exists, and it’s one of the most iconic designs in famed architect Steven Holl’s repertoire. Also known as the Vanke Center, the horizontal skyscraper looks like a series of towers turned on their sides and suspended above a tropical landscape in Shenzen, China. 1

aware of their very own local Picasso? Hamad Al Humaidhan, a 11 year old boy from Kuwait, is raising a storm in Britain’s art world and stunning adults with what can be described as genius. His paintings echo the brilliance of painter Pablo Picasso. The boy's use of bright colors, synchronized in intricate cubist patterns in bold lines has earned him the nickname “Young Picasso”. His work has graced the halls of many famous art galleries and sold for hundreds of pounds. He sold his first painting, a portrait of Ronaldo, painted when he was only nine, at an auction in Bath for £650. On the 180th anniversary of Covent Garden, Hamad was commissioned to paint a huge birthday card, which was one of the highlights of the celebration. He does not take any lessons but practices daily for the sheer pleasure of his craft. Furthermore, he is venturing into new art styles. After viewing other artists in art books and exhibitions, Hamad decided to dabble a little in the art of Dalí and Van Gogh. Hamad is humble about his success as he considers painting a tranquil experience and perceives his current works as a natural process to improving himself. Math is his favorite subject in school following Art class. Painting is a huge part of his life and he throws himself into creating vibrant shapes whenever his imagination beckons him. Citypages interviewed the young prodigy to discuss his rise into stardom.

When did you last visit Kuwait? I last visited Kuwait in December 2010 Have there been any exhibitions of your work in Kuwait? No, I did not have the opportunity to host an exhibition in Kuwait. However, I have participated in a workshop from 25 -26 December 2010 for which I painted two huge paintings in 2 days in Dar Al Funoon. Have you finished any paintings with Kuwait as your topic? Yes, for Kuwait’s 50th Anniversary. Do you have plans to major in Arts at the University? Yes, I would like to study Art as a profession. What other hobbies do you enjoy? I am active in sports. I play rugby and football. What is a cherished dream you have that you would like fulfilled? To one day become a renowned, world-famous artist. How many paintings have you done so far? Do you remember the instance when you first discovered your talent? My dad was climbing the stairs with a blank canvass and it suddenly clicked. I said, “Dad, Can I paint on the Canvass?” He replied, “Yes” and inspiration just happened from there. When did your parents realize their son was a genius? What was their reaction?

More than 50 and still counting. Can you tell us your zodiac sign is? My zodiac sign is Virgo. How do you feel about people comparing your work to Picasso? I feel honored. Picasso is one of the well-known artists of the world. I hadn’t even seen his works before I started painting. Now people are congratulating me on how well I paint like him. Do you have to explain some of your paintings to people?

My parents realized my potential after I painted my first acrylic painting, an impressionistic portrait of Cristiano Ronaldo. They were very happy and gave me a lot of encouragement to work on many more artistic works. What are you currently schooling and at which year?

No, I do not like explaining my paintings to people because I would like for it to be a mystery to them. I want them to think for themselves as to what the painting is about. What message would you like to give to children your age?

I am presently in St Martin's Garden Primary School and in Year 6. When did you move to the UK? And why?

If you have talent, don’t hide it. Show it to your parents so they can provide the guidance and assistance you need for its development. I moved to the UK in 2007. The reason being that my mother Fadaa Alown wished to pursue a PhD at Bath University. What can you tell us about your art exhibitions at several galleries in the UK? I am very proud of three major exhibitions; Llangollen International Pavilion, the Gallery in Liverpool and my first solo show at Artifex in Birmingham. Most of my paintings were sold at these exhibitions. Who has influenced you the most in your artistic endeavor? Is there anyone else in your family who is an artist? My dad has been the first and most positive influence in my life, artistic and otherwise. When people admire your paintings, what emotions stir inside you? I feel a mixture of happiness and excitement because sometimes when people are really interested in my paintings, they might be willing to purchase them. You have incorporated a story into each of your stories? How does the story telling start? I stare at the canvas. I close my eyes and the idea takes shape in my imagination. Then, I start painting. I detect an African influence in your paintings? Why is that? I love to work while listening to tribal drum music.

Talent in a Viewfinder Eyes

are the most precious gift through which we view the world. However, there are those special people who see beyond the world surrounding them. In their mind, the world is an artistic creation with time and luck opening up to them, true beauty and aesthetic value. For a photographer, there is inspiration calling from every corner of the earth and it is up to them to show the average folk what it means to be encompassed by art. Sarah Hasan Al-Sayegh is a 27 year old harboring an ardency for photographs and a zest for travel. Two loves that have resulted in a vivid and creative collection on her Flickr account, it shows the depth of her imagination and style. Photography is intrinsic to Sarahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. It is a visual diary of all the exciting things she has seen and done. Her translation of her experiences has the potential to take your breath away. Photography started as a hobby in 2006 with a digital camera, but gradually it grew into a passion that engendered her to pursue photography professionally in the later part of 2007. Sarah graduated from Kuwait University College of Business Administration, majoring in Accounting. Currently, she is an employee of Wataniya Telecommunications. Citypages had a sit down with Sarah to learn about the evolving journey of this artist.

Who or what has been your influence into photography? My Father has been the most supportive of my interest. When did you buy your first camera and what was it? My first camera was a simple Panasonic point-and-shot camera. What camera model do you own now? Currently, I own a professional DSLR Nikon D700. What is your favorite piece of camera equipment? Along with the camera body, my favorite piece is one of my lenses; the Nikon 24-70mm. It is a fixed-aperture normal zoom lens that is perfect for clicking the kind of pictures I want. What kind of steps did you take to learn photography? I am a self-taught photographer. I wanted to learn everything there was to know about photography so I flipped through photography books and researched the net for instructions on taking shots of different locations. I have not attended any formal photography classes but the workshops were very interesting especially with my friends, who shared my enthusiasm for photography. We could discuss the techniques and our favorite aspects of photography. How do you feel about digital imagery alteration? I see it as a good scope, because Digital Photography can change a lot of things. To every photographer the camera is his/her eyes. With a photograph, people can see through the photographerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes and get an impression of their viewpoint. In your opinion, what do you think are the pros and cons of Photoshop? I do not work with Photoshop. For a lot of my pictures, I only do minor adjustments to them as Photoshop can change the concept of the picture. Do you prefer black and white or color? It differs from picture to another, but in general I prefer both. There is an individual attractiveness to be found in either approach. What is your work flow process on a photo job? Well, since I am a big fan of Street photography and Landscape/Cityscape photography, I have to choose the right time and the right place for it. For example, in landscape/cityscape photography the most important factor is the weather and the location. If there is bad weather it will not help at all. As for street photography, in Kuwait it is difficult to get a good place because when people see a photographer they tend to walk away. Where do you want to go with your photography and how has the internet helped you expand your audience? I want to go International, to be able to see my pictures in exhibitions around the world especially in the United States or in the United Kingdom, since both countries have exhibitions for photographers. The internet has given my work a lot of exposure, I have an account on Flickr so I can upload my photographs. People from Kuwait and all over the globe can have access to my photographs through it. Soon, I plan to open my own webpage as an official gallery for my photographs. What kind of ideas do you want people to have of your photographs? With Street photography, the idea I would like to leave people with is that each face has its own impression and it is an amazing sight to see the faces of people as they are going about their everyday life. However, as for Landscape/ Cityscape photography, I want people to understand the unique beauty that can be found in every place.

Which was your favorite place for photography from the places you have traveled to aside from Kuwait? I have traveled to different countries, but my favorite place so far is the United Kingdom and Maldives. Any tips or advice to our readers please! If you are interested in photography, take your camera even if it is a small digital point-and-shot camera and start taking pictures. Your message on the National Day of Kuwait? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d love to congratulate the people of Kuwait, especially His Highnesses Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber AlSabah, and His Highness Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, on the 50th Anniversary of Independence and 20th Anniversary of the Liberation of Kuwait. Ahmed Al-Rashid is a graphic designer whose name is well-known for creating vibrant, attractive designs. His Flickr account serves as the gallery for his artistic accomplishments, a wide range of items he has been commissioned to design for important clients. For one of the leading establishments namely; Kuwait Finance House, he has designed a Hummer, calendars, Ramadan gift boxes, real estate brochures and even their advertisements. The Saudi Kuwaiti Finance House logo has sprung from his imagination as well as the banners for the Dubai International Bowling Tournament. There are numerous other assignments he has dabbled in, and they carry his signature, innovative and modern view on design. Ahmed is originally from Kuwait and has completed his Bachelors in Management from Kuwait University. His interest began 13 years ago and since then, he has pursued his chosen vocation voraciously. Having completely invested himself, he undertook a variety of jobs from different companies and studied fervently to hone his talents. Ahmed is an inspiration to many Kuwaiti designers, who admire his talent and drive in the quest for excellence. "A package should have looks, brains, and personality: to attract, convince, and start a relationship" It is what he believes is that has given him the status he has today. How did you get your start into logo designing? Initially I started sketching my designs by hand and then with practice, came the professional touch after a passage of time. How will you define your designing skills? It is an inborn talent. Is there anybody else in your family attached to this field? No, I am the sole prince of my family in the artist regime. What is your family’s reaction towards your work? All my family members are very happy for me and they really love my work. When did you sell your first design and to whom? My first design was purchased by a restaurant 10 years ago. Have you sold any expensive designs till date? Yes, recently my design was bought by a holding company in Dubai at an attractive price. How did people come to know about you? My work is my identity but at the same time, we cannot ignore the influence of social media in this modern world. I display many of my best designs on Flickr. Can you recall any logos that presented a challenge? (Smiling) There were many logos that were not so easy to create. How long does it take to complete a logo? It depends largely on the work process from ‘sketch to the final touch’. Normally it takes anywhere from 7 to 14 days to create a logo. Which logo was the quickest you have done? Once, I was sketching a logo for a restaurant to show them some ideas. They quickly picked up the sketch and said that they wanted that itself as the logo. I finalized it there itself. How often do you resort to sketching when designing your logos? I never start work on any project without sketching it first.

Have you had any experience with 3-D logos? Yes, I have made several 3-D logos. How many hours a day do you spend on your work? On a routine day I usually spend 4 hours per day. Where do you spend your time working? Sometime I like to pass the time in cafés but mostly I prefer to stay at home. What else do you design other than logos? I design gift items, packaging and publication along with logo designing. Recently I took on a job of branding for a company in Dubai. What hobbies interest you? I like listening to music as it is very important in bringing out the creativity in my work. I also frequent the local gym in pursuit of health and fitness. Do people copy your work? People copied me a lot but now I am careful to protect my designs. Which computer is favorable for the kind of work you do? I use a MAC. I have three of them in my room. Do you like reading books? I am an avid reader and I have a precious treasure of books in my room. My choice of books occasionally is the source of my ideas. I read them to derive inspiration from the work of past famous designers. I study how they use different combinations of colors. Have you participated in any competition? I was one of the participants in the Hugo Boss Competition and I was awarded the second position. Although I did not know much about the rules of this competition. It is unfortunate that similar competitions are not locally organized in Kuwait for that could really explore the Kuwaiti talent. Have you inculcated an Arab style to any international logo? I have not done this till now.

If there is any other pleasure to be had from life – it is to sample the intricate flavors that skilled hands have combined to produce a taste-filled work of art. Or you can find the courage to venture into uncharted land and attempt to tackle a new recipe. What better way to get started than to be inspired by one cooking enthusiast, whose favorite recipes are a source of love, healthy living and wholesome delicious food.

What according to you is the main difference between other diets and an Ayurvedic diet? Other diets aim to only help you lose weight. An Ayurvedic diet, tailored for your body type, helps you be the healthiest person you can be. If you need to lose weight, it will help you lose weight in the healthiest possible way, for your body type, by examining the reasons you are putting on weight from a mind/body/spirit perspective. Weight gain is not purely about food; some people will lose weight under stress while others put on weight. Our body should always be viewed as a whole and “treated” as such. What lead to your discovery of Ayurveda and how does it work? Around 10 years ago, I had some persistent health issues. I consulted many doctors in London to find the reason for my ailment but no one was ever able to help. I found it hard to digest food and was putting on weight despite not changing my very healthy diet and exercising every day. No one was able to help as I was not “ill” but I was not in a state of health either. I then found myself at an Ayurvedic spa and narrated my story to the doctor. He listened and without missing a beat, he told me I had a severe imbalance, explained how and what I can do to help myself. He prescribed some herbal medicine and it all worked. I became a convert and over the next decade, read

many Ayurvedic books from cover to cover, visited more spas and talked to more doctors. Ayurveda believes that everything in the world is made up of five elements; air, fire, water, earth and ether (the space everything happens in). Our bodies are made up of these elements but in different proportions. It is our own elemental DNA and determines our body/mind type, will govern the kind of people we are and the health issues we are predisposed to. As food is also made up of the same 5 elements, eating food will bring more of that energy into the body so eating food that is pungent (fire) will literally bring heat into our body (e.g. Chilies). We need to eat a diet which helps balance and keeps in balance the elements in our body. We need to make sure we eat a “balanced and balancing diet”. Ayurveda believes to be healthy you need to look at the body, mind and spirit. If one of these is out of kilter, it will affect the rest. For example, if we are stressed (mind) for a long period of time, we might get an ulcer (body), if we have ulcer for a while and have to change our lifestyle, we might get depressed (spirit). Clear up the stress and the rest will follow. Lastly, Ayurveda identifies the digestive system as the most important factor in achieving good health, as even if you eat a healthy diet but you are unable

to digest it properly, the nutrients will not be assimilated into your body. You will not get the goodness from your food and at the same time, you will build up the toxins in your gut. It is a complex science but it is so logical that it is easy to understand and follow. What was it like working in different restaurants around the world? When I made the choice to enter the food industry, I decided to try out many different sections of the food industry to see what I enjoyed and which part of that world would suit me. In those years, I worked in a fast food chain, a restaurant, a hotel kitchen and a catering company. I loved my time in the professional kitchen but ended up writing a book, which suited my creative sensibilities. You are a proud writer of 5 very special books catering to a very unique concept. Tell us a little about each of your books. My first book was Indian Every Day (2003) consisting of healthy recipes that I ate at home, mostly North Indian cuisine. My second book, Indian Food Made Easy (2007) is a book of ‘easy to make’ Indian recipes for those being introduced to Indian food but it also has some more complex dishes. It accompanied my first series of “Indian Food Made Easy”. My third book, Anjum’s New Indian (2008) accompanied my second series of Indian Food Made Easy and had a regional slant to the book. There are recipes from around India but all simplified enough for people to cook at home and without too much fuss. My fourth book, Anjum’s Eat Right for Your Body Type (Jan 2010) is a modern book on Ayurveda, laying out the principles, describing the body types and explaining how to incorporate these beliefs into ones busy lives to achieve optimum health. There are around 80 healthy recipes from around the world to help you get started and stick to an Ayurvedic diet. My fifth book, I Love Curry (Oct 2010), is a book full of our favorite Indian curries, both restaurant and regional as well as a few of my own inventions thrown in. What are your future plans? I hope to do more TV series and I am launching a range of my own Indian sauces, which I am really excited about. Will you be considering starting your own restaurant chain? I think owning a restaurant will interfere with being a mother to my young children in a way no other job does. Hence, for the time being, there are no plans for a restaurant. I had read that you recommend eating all of the five tastes each day. Can you elaborate a bit more on that? There are 6 main tastes in Ayurveda; salty, sweet, bitter, sour, astringent and pungent. Each taste gives the body something different and to be truly healthy we need to have a certain amount of each taste everyday. Too little or too much of any one taste over a long period of time and your body will suffer. Why do you think the food served at Indian Restaurants is very rich and thick? Restaurant food is always richer than home food. I also think it is easier and quicker to cook heavy food than it is to take the time to cook ingredients with less oil. There is also the perception that sweet, heavy sauces are the preferences of the customer and sometimes this is true, but it is changing. Can you explain the various body types that you have talked about in your book? There are three body types; Kapha, Vata and Pitta. The following will give you an idea of what they are but this is very general, to learn more you should

read the book. Vata (an excess of air and ether) Vata is an excess of the air and ether elements. Being born with a Vata constitution means you are blessed with the all-elusive naturally thin figure and delicate features; you are the natural supermodel. You have an endearing quality and are creative, intuitive and friendly. Like the wind, you are adaptable and flexible. You are enthusiastic about life, like to sing and dance and engage in other artistic activities. You are a quick thinker but also have a tendency to forget quickly. You are always on the go, at full tilt, and life is always busy and full of interesting activities. Pitta (an excess of fire) If you are born with an excess of Pitta, you are lucky enough to be able to digest pretty much anything you eat and have a strong metabolism. You have a good constitution, lots of energy and a sharp mind. You are determined, driven, competitive, courageous and organized. You are a doer. Most Pitta people have a medium build, a good complexion and sleep deeply (unless stressed which happens often). You are great orator, motivator and a leader but are also the soldiers and athletes of society. You are a clear thinker and have a great memory. You do, however, need to monitor your tendency towards stress and anger and keep cool, on all levels. Kapha (an excess of earth and water) Kapha types are the earthy types and have the strongest constitution of all. You are strong, healthy and happy people. Having lots of patience, warmth and generosity ensures that you have a good circle of friends and are close to your family. You are stable and people often turn to you for emotional advice. It is said that kapha types have the best features, good (slightly oily) skin, hair and a mellifluous voice. You will age well. You are intelligent but not interested in scholarly pursuits. You have a tendency to put on weight quicker than the other body types (through no fault of your own) but as long as you lead a healthy life, you will remain the healthiest and happiest of them all. What has been your biggest achievement so far? I think being a working mother is my biggest achievement; it is the hardest thing to do. What would you like to accomplish professionally? I am not sure I am that strategic. Do you have a message for us at CityPages? You do not have to be fearful of cooking unfamiliar cuisines; you have to try as getting it right can be all the more satisfying!

Honey is not only used as a sweetener for teas and coffees. It is a natural remedy used for many ailments, and has great health benefits.

Use honey on cuts, scrapes, burns and for minor injuries. It works as an antiseptic, prevents any infection and heal the wound. Just apply to the affected area.

It is used to get rid of acne and to minimize any facial wrinkles. Warm some honey (2-3 Tablespoons) into a small bowl for 10-15 seconds. Then apply it to the areas where there is acne, fine lines and dark spots. Leave on your face for 10-15 minutes, then use a hot wash cloth to remove honey or wash your face with warm water. Repeat this daily until acne and dark spots are gone. Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can be treated with honey. Mix honey to a glass of water with freshly squeezed lime or lemon and apply to your skin. Leave on for 30 minutes, then wash it with warm water. It can soothe a sore throat, cough and colds. Causes of Nausea and dealing with it Nausea by itself is not an illness but primarily a symptom of some other disorder or health conditions. Nausea is a feeling of sickness in the stomach characterized by an urge to vomit. Nausea is basically a reaction; the body has, due to the presence of some illness in your body. It often occurs with or precedes vomiting. It can be acute and short lived, or it can be prolonged and persistent at some times. In order to treat nausea it would be necessary to understand and address the cause.

To avoid this nauseating morning sickness mix 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar with 1 tbsp honey. Mix it in cold water and have it before going to bed.  Wrist-bands are used to control motion sickness.  Keep a handful of crackers on your nightstand; eating a few before you get out of bed may help ease nausea in the morning. Foods that are high in starch helps absorb stomach acids and settle a queasy stomach.

I can conclude from the above discussion, the most common causes of nausea are disorders of the Stomach and digestive system. Chronic nausea doesn’t happen without a reason or a diagnosis, and coping with chronic nausea takes some skill and knowledge. The best method of treating nausea would always be by treating the underlying cause and seek medical help to treat that condition.

Kashmiri Lamb Kebabs

Serves: 4

Authentic Goan fish curry This is an authentic, delicious fish curry. Many coconut curries are mild and there are others in the book that are so here is a spicy coconut fish curry from Goa. Use a frim white fish such as halibut, tilapia or monkfish. You can use boneless pieces of firm white fish but bear in mind they must stand up to cooking in a curry without breaking up as you serve. Serve with rice.

Ingredients 600g fish, firm white fish steaks or fillets, see above 3 tbs. vegetable oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 small tomato, quartered 6 fat cloves garlic, peeled 30g ginger, peeled weight, cut into large chunks 4-7 Kashmiri dried red chillies (mild, deep red chillies) 2 scant tsp. cumin seeds 4 level tsp. coriander seeds (or 2 tbs. coriander powder) ¾ tsp. turmeric powder 100ml coconut milk 4 good tbs. coconut cream (I find mine in cartons) 2-4 green chillies, whole 1 tsp. tamarind paste or to taste Salt to taste

Method Using a spice grinder grind the cumin, chillies and coriander until it is a fine powder. Heat the oil in a large non-stick saucepan. Add the onion and cook over a moderate flame until they are golden brown. Meanwhile, blend together the ginger, garlic and tomatoes until smooth, add a little water to help. Add to the onions and cook over a moderate flame until the paste releases oil droplets on the base of the pan, around 8-10 minutes. Add the spices and salt along with a small splash of water and cook the spices for 2 minutes. Add the coconut milk and 300ml water, bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes. Add the tamarind paste, green chillies and fish, bring back to a boil and simmer gently until the fish is just done, around 3-6 minutes, depending on the cut and fish. Add the coconut cream and shake in to incorporate, taste and adjust the salt and tamarind to taste and serve.

Strict vegetarians in old India would often shun all meats as well as onion and garlic as they were all thought to imbibe the person eating them with a character that is probably best described as animalistic, something the spiritually-inclined Hindus wanted to avoid. Most Hindus are still vegetarian and many of them still avoid garlic and onions. The Hindus of Kashmir are unusual as their cooking continued to avoid garlic and onion but at some point they started to eat the meat. Their cuisine evolved and started to incorporate many types of meat but still cooked without onions and garlic. This is one of those dishes and in the absence of stronger flavours the spices are able to shine and give these delicious kebabs all they need in terms of flavouring. I cook these in a non-stick pan but in the summer, you can make long kebabs on skewers and grill them for an extra charcoal flavour. Serve as an appetiser with drinks with radish and yoghurt chutney or coriander and mint chutney.

Ingredients 500g lamb mince, minced extra fine (ask your butcher to mince it three times) 1 medium egg 1 large slice white bread, crusts removed and crumbed ½ tsp. turmeric powder ¼-½ tsp. red chilli powder 1 tsp. cumin powder 1 rounded tsp. ginger paste salt to taste (I add 1¾ tsp) 2 tbs. Greek yoghurt 4 black cardamom pods, seeds kept and husk discarded 10 green cardamom pods, seeds kept and husks discarded 6 cloves 1/2” cinnamon bark 4 tbs. vegetable oil

Method Grind the whole spices to a fine powder and add to the mince along with the egg, powdered spices, bread crumbs and salt. Mix well with your hands Divide into small portion and make into small disc-like kebabs/patties. Heat 1½ tbs. oil in a large non stick frying pan and fry the kebabs in 2 batches on a low heat until browned on both sides and cooked through the middle, around 3 minutes each side. Serve hot with the radish and yoghurt chutney. Makes: 20

Method Grind the spices to a fine powder, the pestle and mortar normally does this quite quickly. Heat the oil in a large saucepan, Add the onion and cook gently until soft and colouring at the edges. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for 1-2 minutes or until it smell cooked. Add a splash of water if it looks like it will burn. Stir in all the spices. Add the chicken, stock, seasoning and tomato puree. Bring to a boil and simmer gently, covered, for 18 minutes. Add the carrots, cover and cook for about 8 minutes. Add the courgettes (or other vegetables) and cook until the chicken and vegetables are all done, another 6-7 minutes or so. Stir in the dates and adjust the liquid quantity by burning off excess water or adding a splash from the kettle. Stir in the parsley and serve. Vegetarian version – Leave out the chicken, use vegetables stock add a few other vegetables and finish with the 1/2-3/4 can of chickpeas or 50g of fresh chickpeas, soaked overnight, cooked (they normally take 1½ hours). Serves: 4

Moroccan Braised Chicken with Dates and Vegetables This is a delicious Moroccan inspired dish but without the chickpeas (we should try to limit the types of protein to one) and without the strong preserved lemons. This dish is great for vata as it is unctuous and soft but can also work for healthy pitta body types with fewer spices. The vegetables lighten the dish and the flavourful broth is absolutely perfect with simple herb cous-cous, barley cous-cous, quinoa or rice. Kapha can also enjoy this curry but should have it as it is, as a stew rather than with a heavy grain or can opt for the vegetarian version below.

Spice blend 2” large cinnamon shard, 1½ tsp. of sesame seeds, 1¼ tsp. cumin seeds

Ingredients 1½ -2½ tbs. vegetable oil (kapha please use 1½, pitta 2 and vata 2½) ¾ tsp. caraway seeds ¾ tsp. ginger paste ½ tsp. sweet paprika (for colour) 1 medium-large onion, sliced 4 small chicken thighs, bone in but skinned and trimmed of all fat 4 fat cloves garlic, grated into a paste 1 small courgette, sliced on the diagonal 1 small carrot, peeled and sliced on the diagonal 500ml chicken stock or vegetable stock 6 large dates or quartered lengthways or other dried fruit (figs or apricots) salt to taste lots of freshly ground black pepper 2 tsp. tomato puree

Winners at 83rd Academy Awards The Kings Speech', 'Inception', 'Black Swan', 'The Social Network' were among the biggest winners at the 83rd Academy Awards held Sunday at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Calif. Although the Hollywood's biggest night only managed to throw very few surprises, the Oscars did not fail to impress thanks to James Franco and Anne Hathaway, who brought the entertainment factor, besides the accidental F-bombs, references to drugs and of course some good old humor targeted at the Academy. The Facebook drama, which was initially the favorite to win the Oscar for Best Movie, was awoken to the competition from The King's Speech at the SAG awards. The British monarchy saga won the best-actor trophy for Colin Firth, besides claiming the prize for best ensemble cast, the guild's equivalent of the best picture Oscar. At the Oscars, 'The King's Speech' took home key honors while 'The Social Network' only managed to match the competitor in terms of the number of awards. 'The King's Speech' won the academy award for 'Best Motion Picture of the year,' 'Achievement in Directing,' 'Original screenplay,' and 'Performance by an actor in a leading role.' 'The Social Network' took home Oscars for 'Achievement in Film Editing,' 'Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures,' and 'Adapted Screenplay.' Shell Honors Winning Teams of the First Pre-Engineering Design Competition in Kuwait Kuwait, 23 February, 2011: The Shell companies in Kuwait, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Energy Center for Engineering Consultancy, today awarded the three winning teams of Kuwait’s first Pre-Engineering Design Competition during a formal dinner event held at the Safir Hotel at Fintas under the Patronage of Minister of Education, Dr. Moudhi Al-Homoud. The winning teams won over 23 school teams, which each showed off their individual designs for a catapult in front of a panel of judges. Each winning team received a cash award, and the team with the best overall creative design also received a trophy for each team member.
