FROM THE

EDITOR

Dear Readers...

Just

a couple of weeks ago, the night skies all across the globe were illuminated with sparkling bright colours as numerous firework displays welcomed the arrival of another New Year. As with every New Year, it’s a time when we reflect on the past twelve months, look forward to the next, and celebrate! And in the CityPages office we are still celebrating, as this Issue is our First Birthday Issue! Yes, we are officially one year old and are now starting OUR new year with this, our thirteenth issue. Sometimes it seems like only yesterday that we were preparing to launch the magazine, but at other times it feels like a lot longer because of all the hard work undertaken behind the scenes to bring each issue to life. But we’re here; we’ve conquered our first year; we’ve grown in size; we’re available, free, from an ever-increasing number of locations throughout Kuwait; we have an expanded online presence; and feedback suggests that you (our readers) really like the magazine. So we have a great base from which to enter the New Year. This anniversary issue is packed with more of the varied content that you tell us you want to see – we managed to interview Raya Meddine, an Arabic actress who appeared in the recently released movie “Sex in the City 2”, and we think that this makes for some great reading; our executive editor gives an insight into local theatrical production following his experience with “Babes in the Wood” at the Kuwait Little Theatre; our auto section features another unusual vehicle inspired by ‘the big screen’; special articles include ski and travel showcases; and of course there’s our usual blend of health, fashion, etc. With a lot of pages to dip into, I shall not delay you any further. Instead, I shall blow out the candles and cut myself a wedge of birthday cake, raise a glass of apple juice and invite you all to join me in a toast to the next twelve months. Happy Reading!

The Lunar Chinese New Year

A Completely Different Celebration New Year begins with the fresh moon on the opening day of the New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days soon after. The 15th day of the New Year is identified as the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. The chinese new year celebration is a colorful, representative and joyous time. Many traditions have a extensive history and may not be understood by all. There are also Chinese people living in every part of all over the globe. Chinese New Year is celebrated in the world but on a smaller level.

Chinese

Easter is celebrated to honor the reappearance of Jesus Christ and the celebration of spring time. It is thought that the name Easter comes from "Eastre," the Goddess of fertility whose festival was distinguished on the day of the vernal equinox. The easter sunday has begun to celebrate on the first Sunday following the full moon after the spring equinox. Easter can accordingly fall anytime between months of March to April. It is also a time for beautifying eggs or sharing chocolate eggs among friends and family.

On the Chinese New Year's day antecedents are honored at family altars and red scroll inscribed with characters suggesting happiness, prosperity and long life are attached on the wall. There are two traditional foods made especially for New Year as gin tuy and yaukok. They also dish up as proper gifts if you are calling on someone. A container of food is positioned in the centre of the living room to promise that there will be sufficient to eat in the coming year, and knives and scissors are unseen away so that no one will cut luck's permanence.

Easter Monday is the celebration of next day of the Easter festivals. The easter monday is not a national holiday for most part of the world. Most characteristics of public life are not any dissimilar to any other Monday. On the celebration of Easter Monday morning, men would wake up their wives with a spritz of the perfumed Easter water as they whispered, "May you never fade".

Valentine's Day is a big day to celebrate with love in all over the world. This is an event that is made more unforgettable by the special care and touch that goes into its preparation. People make that extra effort and ensure that valentine's day takes off without a drawback. But, anything you do, remember to laugh and spend time together as much as you can. People around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St Valentine.

The chinese new year calendar pursues the moon and divides the years into twelve groups. Each year has named for an animal. Those people who born in that year are believed to distribute different traits. The chinese new year calendar is a combine of both solar and lunar phase. The date of Chinese New Year modifies every year. The Chinese calendar was a compound clock. Its bounds were set according to the lunar phases as well as the solar solstices and equinoxes.

The Family Bed

Sinead Hoben screams loud enough to awaken the dead! How dare you abandon him like that? At the end of a tiring day you dolefully give in to his battle cry; you lift him and he stops... you are in his grip! As days and nights merge into one he habitually sandwiches himself between mummy and daddy! Number two arrives and it becomes a priority to make number one stay in his own bed. But, oh no, he doesn't like that! He may start off there but he makes his own way into the family bed throughout the night. You may resort to tricks to encourage him to stay in his own room. Lovely new bed-clothes, soft character lighting, soothing music, pretty mobiles...

There's

an old tradition in Ireland, the wake bed, a family bed where the dead are waked. Well, the family bed takes on a whole new meaning when you have children: the awake bed! When your new baby arrives home from the hospital all your plans to not spoil him go out the window. He is a tiny little soul and you are his slave. He squeaks, you run. You are completely in his control! You planned to feed him, bathe him, dress him, play with him, show him off and at the end of the day, put him to sleep in his lovely new crib! Real life isn't like that... You've fed him, bathed him, dressed him, played with him, showed him off and, sleeping soundly in your arms, you've tenderly placed him in his lovely new crib. His eyes open, he glares at you, opens his mouth wide and

Don't fool yourself; he's well ahead of you! His nocturnal excursions continue. You beg, you plead, for a full night's sleep in your own bed without your little visitor - but it falls on deaf ears! Still he pays his call. You resort to purchasing a new bed for yourself, a bigger one. You have a bright idea: let the wee man have your old bed. He'll like that, his own big bed, just like mummy and daddy! More lovely bedclothes, lots of praise for your little treasure. Why didn't you think of it sooner? Oh, the naivety of first-time parents. His new bed might be bigger but so is yours; there's even more room between mummy and daddy now. So he can bring a few toys along too! As the family grows so does the gap. You precariously hang off one side of the new big bed as your husband hangs off the other, but you smile as you sing along to, 'There were five in the bed and the little one said,"Roll Over!"' Life imitates nursery rhymes. Didn't you know that?

Paul Tunbridge

Some traditions for celebrating birthdays are quite similar in many parts of the world; birthday candles which carry wishes up to Heaven, birthday games which gauge how much more a child can do versus last year, and birthday pinches or taps which ensure good luck for the coming year. There are other traditions, however, which are more specific to certain countries. Here we take a look at some of the birthday traditions reported from around the globe…

Africa

– In many African cultures, the day a child is born is not observed as a special day. Instead, when African children reach a certain age, they are initiated into the community and this is when they learn the laws, beliefs, customs, songs and dances of their tribes. These initiation ceremonies are celebrated for groups of children instead of individual children.

Argentina

- The birthday child receives a pull on the earlobe for each year they have been alive. When girls turn 15 they have a huge party and dance the waltz with their father and other boys. Aruba - Children take a treat to school for their classmates and all teachers. Each teacher receives a treat and gives the birthday child a small gift like a pencil, an eraser or a postcard. The birthday child is also allowed to wear special clothes instead of the school uniform.

Australia

- Many Australian Birthday parties are barbeques as the weather most of the time is not very cold. In Australia the children eat a dish called "Fairy Bread" which is a very popular snack (it is buttered bread covered with tiny sprinkles known as "hundreds and thousands").

Bolivia

- At the age of 16 the birthday girl wears a white dress and dances the waltz with her father and other boys.

Brazil

- In Brazil, the children usually eat candies shaped like fruits and vegetables. The houses are decorated for the occasion with festive banners and brightly colored paper flowers. The birthday child receives a pull on the earlobe for each year they have been alive. The birthday person also gives the first slice of cake to his/ her most special friend or relative -

usually their mum or dad. At the age of 15 the girl dances a waltz, starting with her father and grandfather, and she dances with a total of 15 partners who each symbolise a year of her life.

Britain

- When it’s your birthday your friends give you the "bumps" by lifting you in the air by your hands and feet and raising you up and down to the floor - one for each year and then one extra for luck!!

Canada

- In Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Newfoundland) the birthday child is ambushed and their nose is greased (with butter or margarine) for good luck. The greased nose makes the child too slippery for bad luck to catch them. This tradition is reputed to be of Scottish decent. In Quebec, on the other hand, the birthday person receives a punch for each year they are alive and then an extra one for good luck.

China

- When a Chinese child turns one year old, it is a very important event. The parents might tell the baby's fortune by placing the baby in the center of a group of objects (such as coins, a doll, a book, etc.) and they wait to see which object the baby picks up. If the baby picked up a coin, he/she may be rich, if the baby reached for a book he/she may become a teacher, if the baby reached for the doll he/she may have many children, etc. The sixth birthday is also a special birthday for the Chinese. For the party itself, friends and relatives are invited for lunch and extra-long noodles are served to wish the birthday child a long life. In China, it is considered unlucky to give someone a clock for a birthday present (in Mandarin, the word for "clock" is similar to death). On the other hand people believe that tigers protect children and so family members might bring newborns special gifts decorated with tigers.

Cuba

- Celebrations are very similar to those in the United States; food, decorations, gifts, piñatas, cake, candles, "happy birthday" song and games. But a lot of people are invited including neighbours, friends, co-workers and family - even if they don't have kids around the birthday child's age.

Denmark

- A flag is flown outside a window to designate that someone who lives in that house is having a birthday.

Presents are placed around the child's bed while they are sleeping so they will see them immediately upon awakening.

Ecuador

- When a girl turns 15 there is a great celebration and the girl wears a pink dress. The father puts on the birthday girl's first pair of high heels and dances the waltz with her while 14 other girls and 14 other boys also dance the waltz.

Egypt

- Egyptian birthday parties are full of singing and dancing when a child fulfills a year in his/her life. Lots of flowers and fruit are used to decorate the party as symbols of life and growth.

Germany

- On a child's birthday the dining table or kitchen will have a special wooden birthday wreath placed on it. The wreath contains small holes for candles and a holder in the centre for the life-candle (this is a taller candle and is beautifully decorated). This candle is lit each year of a child's birthday until they reach the age of twelve. A member of the birthday person’s family wakes up at sunrise and lights the candles on the birthday cake. There are as many candles as the years of age of the birthday person plus one for good luck. The candles are left burning all day long. After dinner that night then everyone sings the birthday song and the birthday person blows out the candles. If all of the candles are blown out in one try then the wish of the birthday person will come true. Presents are then opened and the party starts. It is also reported that, when men reach the age of 30 and they still don't have a girlfriend, they have to sweep the stairs of the city hall. All their friends will throw rubble on the stairs and, when the sweeping is finished they'll throw some more rubble there. This way every girl can see that this man reached the age of 30 and still doesn't have a girlfriend (and that he can clean a house very well!).

Guyana

- Chicken, duck or lamb curry with rice are the main dishes at a birthday celebration. A family member usually bakes a fruit or sponge cake for the birthday boy/girl to cut. The person celebrating their birthday will wear something fancy.

Holland

- Special year birthdays such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 21 are called "crown" years. The birthday child receives an especially large gift on a crown year birthday. The family also decorates the birthday child's chair at the dining room table with seasonal flowers or paper streamers, paper flowers and balloons. At school the birthday child can give their classmates something to eat and the teacher makes the child a birthday hat, often made of paper streamers or paper flowers. Children will eat pancakes sprinkled with powdered sugar and taartjes (tarts made with different kinds of fillings) which are served with lemonade or hot chocolate.

Hungary

- When gifts are open, everyone pulls on the earlobes of the birthday person and says a little rhyme. The rhyme is translated into English as follows "God bless you, live so long so your ears reach your ankles".

India

- On a Hindu child's first birthday, his or her head is shaved while being held by a special fire. Removal of the hair cleanses the child of any evil in past lives, symbolizing a renewal of the soul. Usually on the day of the birthday, the child will wear very colorful clothing to school and will pass out chocolates to the entire class. The child will also kneel and touch their parents' feet as a sign of respect. They then all visit a shrine, where they pray and the child is blessed. In the afternoon there might be a meal that includes a spicy vegetable stew called curry and chutney which is a spicy fruit relish. The dessert is a treat known as "dudh pakh", which is rice like pudding (they might also stir in pistachios, almonds, raisins, and a spice called cardamon).

Italy

- The child's ears are pulled as many times as the age they are turning.

Jamaica Japan

- There is singing and dancing to the beat of reggae music, and the birthday child is floured.

- Certain birthdays in Japan are more important than others (the 3rd, 5th, and 7th). During these special birthdays, Japanese children participate in the upcoming Shichi-go-san Festival (meaning the "Seven-Five-Three" Festival), celebrated annually on November 15. During this festival, children and their families visit a shrine or other place of worship and will give thanks to God for their health and strength, and ask to be blessed with continued well-being in the future and a long life (this is due to the fact that a long time ago children died before their 3rd, 5th or 7th birthdays). For this occasion, girls and boys always dress in their finest clothes, which may be traditional kimonos or even western-style clothing.

Korea

- On the 100th day (which is called a "paegil") after a child's birth, a small feast is usually held to celebrate the child having survived this period. The table is set with food, and four items; a pencil, a ruler, thread, and money. The baby chooses one item to forecast their future; excellent student, good with hands, long life or riches. The family, relatives, and friends celebrate with rice cakes, wine, and other delicacies such as red and black bean cakes sweetened with sugar or honey. It is believed that if the rice cakes are shared with 100 people the child will have a long life and therefore rice cakes are usually sent to as many people as possible to help share the happiness of the occasion. Those receiving the rice cakes do not return the serving vessels empty, but with skeins of thread expressing the hope of longevity, and with rice and money symbolizing future wealth. The red and black bean cakes are believed to bring the child luck and happiness and are placed at the four compass points within the house.

Lithuania

- A garland is hung around the entire door of the home of the birthday person. The birthday person sits in a decorated chair and family members lift them up to three times.

Malaysia

- Friends or relatives who visit, give presents to the person celebrating their birthday or they may give an "ang-bao" which is a small red packet filled with money. At about 16, when teenagers start to invite boys and girls to their parties, there is lots of dancing and games to help find a partner (the trick is to always have the same numbers of boys and girls!).

Native America

- Throughout history, Native American tribes have usually placed significance on milestones in a child's development rather than the day he or she was born. The day a child takes its first step is cause for just as much rejoicing as the day he or she accepts the responsibilities of an adult, gets married, becomes a parent, etc. The Winnebago Indians have a big birthday and anyone can attend, people find out about birthday parties through word of mouth. These parties can last all evening and through the night. The birthday person can choose to eat whatever they like for their birthday and it is made for them. The cake is taken around and shown to the guests and it is considered an honor to be asked to cut the cake. After the meal the children play a hand game - This is played by an adult holding a bone or stone in one of his or her hands and the children have to try to guess where it is.

New Zealand

- After the birthday cake is lit, the happy birthday song is sung loudly and often out of tune and then the person birthday person receives a clap for each year they have been alive and then one for good luck.

Norway

- The birthday child stands out in front of their class and chooses a friend to share a little dance while the rest of the class sings a happy birthday song. Most birthday parties consist of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and dishes of red gelatin covered with vanilla sauce. At birthday parties guests may go fishing, but not for fish; they

play a game known as "Fishing for Ice Cream", where everyone pulls up a frozen treat attached to a piece of string.

Philippines

- On a birthday, early in the day, the family goes to hear Mass and to thank God. Also, in the Philippines, birthday cakes are baked in various sizes and shapes. The celebration also includes noodles representing a long life. The outside of the birthday child's house is adorned with blinking colored lights in the early evening.

Puerto Rico formal dinner is held.

- The child gets tapped on the arm for each birth year. A big party which includes a

Russia

- Instead of a birthday cake, many Russian children receive a birthday pie with a birthday greeting carved into the crust. In school, teachers often give a gift to the student having a birthday. Children usually will play a game that features a clothesline. What they do is hang prizes from the clothesline and each guest gets to cut down a prize to take home.

South Africa

- On the twenty-first birthday a key made using anything from paper to aluminum foil to silver to gold is presented by the parents as a sign that the child is ready to unlock the door to their future.

Sudan

- In Sudan the children who live in the cities celebrate their birthday whereas in the country they don't. Children will usually drink a red punch that is called "karkady" (made from hibiscus flowers).

Sweden

- Like Danish and Norwegian people, Swedes like to use their national flag to decorate on birthdays and special occasions. Swedish children are often served breakfast in bed. Birthday cakes in Sweden are similar to pound cakes and are decorated with marzipan.

United States

- At children's parties, balloons and streamers are hung up and lots of friends are invited to the party. Sometimes the person having the birthday can choose what they want to do: bowling, swimming, arcades, amusement parks, camping trips, etc. The majority of American children celebrate birthdays with a cake topped with lighted candles. Most families use the candles to represent how old a person is turning (and another one for good luck). For instance, a 2-year old will have 3 candles on the cake. When the cake is set before the birthday child, candles lit, he or she is supposed to make a wish (without telling anyone what it is) and after making a wish, he or she tries to blow out the candles. If all the candles go out with one breath, it is believed that the wish will come true!

Uruguay

- The principal ritual of a birthday is a cake with candles and the eternal song "Happy Birthday to you..." At the end of the song, the birthday person blows out the candles and all guests applaud or cheer, some make jokes, whistle loudly, and touch the birthday person's shoulder or head. When a girl reaches the age of 15, she puts on a formal dress and dances a waltz with possible suitors.

Vietnam

– Everyone’s birthday is celebrated on New Year’s Day. Not only is “Tet” the beginning of a New Year, but it is also everyone's birthday. The Vietnamese do not know or acknowledge the exact day they were born. A baby turns one on Tet no matter when he/ she was born that year. Children say they were born in the year of the symbol of the lunar calendar for that year. On the first morning of Tet, adults congratulate children on becoming a year older by presenting them with red envelopes that contain "Lucky Money," or li xi. These envelopes are given to the children by parents, siblings, relatives and close friends.

You

have one every year, and after a while they start to add up. Birthdays, that is. Maybe your most consistent birthday tradition is that every year you come up with a party idea that's more zany and creative than the one you had the year before. Nothing wrong with that, but it can also be nice to have some birthday traditions that you can rely on to stay essentially the same from year to year, especially for children, who tend to find a sense of continuity comforting (and who doesn't?). In a quick trawl around the internet, we’ve uncovered a whole variety of ways in which birthdays are celebrated. Alongside many of the traditional cultural celebrations from around the world, it appears that a lot of the modern “traditions” have their basis in food – some folk like to celebrate with birthday meals at home, whilst others prefer always to eat out; some opt for a different cuisine each year as they celebrate birthdays “around the world” whilst others ensure they eat exactly the same fare year-on-year. Then there are the people who like to celebrate by dressing in a certain way, often by selecting their favourite outfits but sometimes by colour-coding their clothes (so that they wear red one year, blue the next, and so on). Others opt to venture on trips out, or in decorating the rooms of the birthday celebrant ... the variety of tradition seems boundless! Here we have gathered together some of the more unusual, interesting and even bizarre activities that are enacted by families as part of their own traditional celebrations... The Fulmer Family in America maintain a Birthday Journal Book for each birthday celebrant. Each year at the birthday party a journal book is passed around for family and friends to sign their names and/or write a message, as well as to keep a record of the gifts. This will become a unique and cherished book to look at later in life. A number of families had highlighted that Bobbing for Apples is their favoured birthday activity. Every year a big bucket is filled with water and the family goes bobbing for apples, and rewarded with some really cool prizes. Mr & Mrs Stormoens like to Hide their Children’s Gifts each year. All the gifts for the birthday child are hidden, and there are poems telling where each present is. The birthday child has to find each and every gift, and then do something (like make scrambled eggs or clear away the dishes) to be allowed to unwrap and open them. Each year on the birthday of each of the Milka family children, starting with the first birthday, a Picture of the Child is taken standing in front of dad. This is actually a lovely way to track the child's growth. The Coffey Family opts to acknowledge Birthday Favourites. The birthday person is allowed to choose his or her favourite meal for the family dinner, their favourite flavour of cake, wears their favourite shirt, etc. If you party with The Thompson Family, you may find yourself holding one of 23 balloons. Their daughter was born on the 23rd of January, so each year a note is tied to 23 helium-filled Balloons stating that it’s "Daisy's birthday". A balloon is given to each of the 23 party guests and all are released into the air at the same time. An attached note on the balloon requests that whoever finds the balloon might return a birthday wish to Daisy to her home address. This symbolizes letting the past year go and starting a new year. Golden Ribbon is the order of the day in the Archibald family’s home. During the

17

January 2011

Family Birthday Traditions night before the birthday, while the birthday child is sleeping, a golden ribbon is tied to the bed and trailed throughout the house. In the morning the child follows the ribbon until they find their birthday surprise at the end of the ribbon. For the Woodforth Family, tradition has a nicely sentimental twist. The father buys his daughters and wife Red Roses on their birthdays - a rose for each year of their age (so that the bunch of roses is equal to their age). Some romance governs tradition in the Trucek household, too. Every five years, on birthdays ending in 5 or 0, the husband in the family celebrates his wife's birthday by hiring a Musical Quartet to appear at a "surprise" time and then entertain for a few hours or for the evening. For the health-conscious Simmons family, Health Check-ups have become an annual birthday tradition. They eat a large breakfast, lunch and dinner and then get a doctor to give them a medical once-over! In similar healthy vein, at the McGougan’s house the birthday person has to Run Around the Block until they have completed as many circuits as the number of years of their age. So far, we’ve listed some pretty normal activities that have been adopted as tradition in various families, but now let’s turn our attention to some of the more bizarre ideas... The Murnane Family starts the day with a Water Fight. The birthday child wakes up to see his friends and family scattered around the bed. When the child speaks he gets a thump in the arm from everyone except for the parents, who then lead a water fight or orange bombardment! Likewise, the messy Mecabe Family sing happy birthday before someone sneaks up behind the birthday child and Rubs Cake all over their Nose and Face. Strangely, the Terry family choose to eat their Birthday Dinner in Reverse. The whole family goes out to dinner at a place chosen by the birthday person. Dessert is ordered and served first, followed by the main course and finally by the appetizers. Singing Off-Tune is the weird custom of the Hillenbrands. When singing the happy birthday song, all the family members purposely sing so badly and off-tune that it hurts the birthday person's ears. As an added distraction, intentionally incorrect words are also used when singing the birthday song. Each year the Winter-Welsch Family treat their birthday child to

breakfast with a friend, for which they "Kidnap" the birthday child's friend and have breakfast at a local restaurant in pyjamas. And finally, in case one birthday a year is not enough, the Desser/Walata family likes to celebrate Half Birthdays. Actual birthdays are celebrated in the normal way but for the half birthday (6 months after each actual birthday) everything is done in half. These half things include: having half a cake, drinking from cups that are half full, singing half the birthday song and giving a gift that's half of something. Having read through some of the weird and wonderful customs of other families, you are doubtless inspired to start a new tradition within your own family unit so we shall conclude with some suggestions for creating your own birthday traditions... Photos provide a quick visual reference to confirm just how much your kids have grown. Photo traditions are quick and easy to start, and easy to customize using your own great ideas. It's fun to scan a new photo of the birthday boy or girl onto the birthday invitations each year. You can take a family photo on the same couch every year, or next to the kid's measuring marks on the wall. You can take a photo in which everyone holds up signs showing old they are, with the birthday boy or girl singled out by a special hat or outfit. No matter how exotic your parties get, you can almost always find some feature of continuity that can be photographed- cutting the cake, say, or opening presents. Put these photos in a special scrapbook or sprinkle them in with the everyday pictures in your album- some day your child will be delighted to have them. Who wouldn't want a memento of the year you got to eat your chocolate cake on the beach in Hawaii? Your child's birthday is also the perfect time to break out the video camera whose battery lies slowly dying on a dusty shelf in the closet. You could videotape the cake ceremony, of course, but why not also take the opportunity to catch up on the year's events? Interview your child for ten minutes each year about the special things they remember, and include props like the award-winning science project, the sports trophies, and the charcoal self-portrait your child made in art class. You might be amazed at how much this birthday tradition helps you remember, long after your child has left the house to start a life on his or her own.

Philippine Eagle One of the World's Largest Eagles Varron

The

Philippine eagle is also named as the Monkey-eating eagle with a scientific name of Pithecophage Jefferyi. This eagle is among of the worlds, rarest, largest as well as one of the most powerful bird eagle. The Philippine eagle can be found in the Philippine forest especially in the forest of Mindanao. The bird is considered as the Philippines national bird. It is now considered as one of the endangered specie in the world making the government to pass law for its protection. The eagle was discovered by the English explorer and naturalist named John Whitehead in the year 1896. There are recent studies which show that the Philippine eagle has a unique evolutionary history because its genetic sequence was found to differ from the other eagle. However some studies suggested that the closest relative of the Philippine eagle could have been the smaller snake eagle. The eagle is having a dark face as well as a creamy-brown nape and crown, its back is brown in color and the underside as well as its under wings are found to be white. It has yellowish, heavy and large legs with powerful dark colored claws. The color of the eagle’s eye is in blue-gray. The eagles can be seen in different Islands in the Philippines, in some parts of Luzon, as well as in the islands of Samar, Leyte and other major Islands especially in the island of Mindanao where they are several in numbers. The Philippine eagle is considered as the dominant hunter in the Philippine forest considering that there are no other major predators that exist. The breeding pair of the Philippine Eagle most likely requires a large area of about 25 to 50 square miles to breed naturally. They have a life expectancy of 30 to 60 years when living in the wild. The Philippine Eagle is feed from different species such as monkeys, flying lemurs, small mammals, birds, lizards, snakes and several others. Their diet depends their living environment where there are different species to prey. In reproduction, the female Philippine Eagle matures sexually at five years of age while the male is at seven. These eagles are considered as monogamous, they prefer to have one partner for the rest of their life. They only search for other mates if their partner dies eventually. The Philippine Eagle is conserved currently in the Philippine Eagle Foundation in the City of Davao, Mindanao Philippines

You ski like a Belgian

John MacArthur

"You ski like a Belgian"

is a cheerily raffish Swiss insult to those, unlike themselves, who had the misfortune to be born somewhere else and for whom sliding down precipitous slopes comes as naturally as breathing. Skiing with Swiss friends over Christmas was a salutary reminder that I was not quite as agile or as insanely foolhardy as in former times. My friends glided effortlessly along, with a fine disregard for the colour of the piste markers – their objective was to choose the most scenic route without regard to difficulty. Surprisingly, a lifetime and a half ago, I used to teach people to ski. Before the days of parabolic skis which allow even an ill-balanced troglodye to turn, we learned on sleek, long, wood-core skis, legs glued together and carved compression parallels were achieved only after much effort and practice. Modern skis have taken a leaf from the skateboarders’ book, possessing a spectacular parabolic curve and turn on a sixpence with legs hip-width apart. All of which meant that with legs glued together and determined pressure, I found myself over-rotating hopelessly with shoulders facing the wrong way, amid gales of laughter. In my defence, the borrowed skis were a bit short, but I nonetheless felt briefly Belgian. The British are an enthusiastic and frequently depressingly inept skiing nation, despite their almost pathological determination to look good on the slopes. Their ineptitude arises from the fact that apart from a few freezing Scottish hills miles from anywhere, there isn’t really enough snow and it never really gets cold enough for the permafrost to harden sufficiently to make a useful base on which new snow can settle so we’re a bit out of practice as a nation. The Inuit have at least thirteen different words for snow; the British have only one …”Hooray!” They seem to have been at least partially responsible for quite a number of early initiatives, because of their absurdly competitive spirit and the fact that their aristocracy had been visiting chic Swiss watering-holes like St Moritz since the 1860’s. Nobody at the turn of the nineteenth century skied for any other purpose than gentle locomotion – a friction-free mode of travel, using whatever could be most conveniently manufactured as fit for purpose, indeed, if Norwegian rock-drawings are to be believed, millennia ago, men were negotiating flat snowy terrain by strapping the bones of large animals

to the toe of their boots using leather strips. Skiing for leisure rather than survival, however, took rather longer to catch on. Ski touring became quite a fashionable late Victorian activity, combining as it did the benefits of fresh air with often quite strenuous exercise. In 1894, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, is recorded as having traversed from Davos to Arosa. He was living in the area as his wife was ‘taking the cure’ for tuberculosis and he ordered the skis from Norway, applying himself to learning to ski as a panacea for his enforced idleness in the sleepy little Alpine town. Indeed, it was the Norwegians who perfected a variety of safer binding inventions and turning techniques. I once was skiing off-piste in Austria when a gentleman, dressed in a warm, 1930’s brown tweed knickerbocker suit and a deerstalker hat, leather boots and old-fashioned bindings, bounded past me through waist-high powder, performing beautiful free heel telemark turns. He reached the bottom having barely broken sweat. Any ski aficionado will probably know a run somewhere in the Alps called the Kandahar Run. This does seem rather odd, given that Kandahar is in southern Afghanistan. Again, it is the Brits who are responsible. In 1911, when he inaugurated the world’s first ever "downhill" ski race, Sir Arnold Lunn, a Brit who founded a travel agency dynasty, named it after Field Marshal Earl Roberts of Kandahar. Later, in 1924 when he and some rather jolly chums founded a ski club in Mürren to develop ski racing they called it the Kandahar Ski Club. Mürren is a pretty car-free village linked by a mountain railway to Wengen and Grindelwald where first Alpine Ski World Championships were staged in 1931 by the Ski Club of Great Britain and has hosted the one of oldest ski races in the world ever since. The legacy of the early enthusiasts is untarnished with time. All over the Alps, particularly during the holiday season, squadrons of Range Rovers, laden with the latest in skiing technology, including intelligently-fibred electronic ski management systems designed to re-transmit energy back into their air-cored bubble fiberglass skis, boots requiring a degree in mechanical engineering to appropriately configure them to the wearer’s feet and light diagonal free-flex bindings are to be seen as their owners are driving south on the A6 and queuing at border crossings, anxiously inspecting the skies for signs of the fluffy white stuff. They can be seen in family groups on the slopes, father who went to ski school for a week in 1972 attempting to teach a seven year old how to do a stem Christie turn, not realising that modern skis do all the work for the child and all they have to do these days is gently turn their feet. Bindings have rather improved since the 1930’s when a broken leg was a genuine hazard because there was no such thing as quick-release or any attention paid to the fact that the forwards and indeed sideways torque experience by a child of five would be significantly less than a fully-grown adult. These days, if the skis buried themselves in a snowdrift, their wearer pops out of the rear binding and their forward momentum cartwheels them effortlessly, if inelegantly, out of the front door to the riotous amusement of all. Forty years ago, they would have snapped a fibula like a matchstick. I am sometimes asked: “What’s the single most important thing to do to make sure a trip to the slopes is successful?” Apart from obviously choosing a resort that is high and has a good snow record, the answer is always the same. Boots. Take your time in the rental shop. Sit down. Get up and wander about in them. Wiggle your toes. Fiddle with the clips. Ignore the growling and mewling of the ever-lengthening queue behind you. If your boots don’t fit, you’ll have a miserable time and ski like a Belgian.

The 5 Most Impor 2010 was an interesting year. Like all previous years several interesting events took place during 2010. The world also had to face the challenges posed by some of the deadliest disasters this year. Here is the list of 5 most important event of the year 2010.

1. WikiLeaks In April Wikileaks posted videos from a 2007 incident in which Iraqi civilians were killed by USA forces. In July of the same year, Wikileaks released Afghan War Diary, a compilation of more than 76,900 documents about the War in Afghanistan. In October, the group released a package of almost 400,000 documents called the Iraq War Logs in coordination with major commercial media organizations. And in November 2010, Wikileaks State department diplomatic cables released took the world by storm. It had such a vast impact on world’s politics that most governments expressed strong disapproval and condemnation, and criticized Wikileaks for potentially jeopardizing international relations and global security.

Wikileaks is an organization established to make public secret documents which are publically not available otherwise. Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, is the founder of Wikileaks. Wikileaks has won a number of awards, including the 2008 Economist magazine New Media Award. In June 2009, Wikileaks and Julian Assange won Amnesty International’s UK Media Award for the 2008 publication of "Kenya".

2. Haiti Earthquake

tant Events of 2010 3. FIFA World Cup

No one can deny the fact that football is most popular sport in the world. Football world cup is arranged every 4 years and is second biggest sporting event after Olympics. FIFA world cup 2010 took place in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. Teams from 32 different countries participated in the event and the matches were played in ten stadiums in nine host cities around the country, with the final played at the Soccer City stadium in South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg.

In the final, Spain, the European champions, defeated third-time finalists the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time, with Andrés Iniesta’s goal in the 116th minute giving Spain their first world title, the first time that a European nation has won the tournament outside its home continent. Host nation South Africa, 2006 world champions Italy and 2006 runners-up France were eliminated in the first round of the tournament. The total prize money on offer for the tournament was $420 million. Before the tournament, each of the 32 entrants receive $1 million for preparation costs. Distribution of prize money is as follows $8 million – To each team exiting after the group stage (16 teams) $9 million – To each team exiting after the round of 16 (8 teams) $14 million – To each team exiting after the quarter-finals (4 teams) $18 million – Fourth placed team $20 million – Third placed team $24 million – Runner up, $30 million – Winner.

4. Oil Spill in Gulf on Mexico

On April 20,2010 British Petroleum’s oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and commencing months of oil leaking unrestrained into the ocean. Efforts to manage the spill with controlled burning, dispersants and plugging the leak were unsuccessful until BP capped the well in mid-July, temporarily halting the flow of oil into the Gulf. The well was then successfully plugged and declared “effectively dead” on September 19. This oil spill has obtained the dubious distinction of being the worst oil spill in US history, surpassing the damage done by the Exxon Valdez tanker that spilled 11 million gallons of oil into the ecologically sensitive Prince William Sound in 1989. It is estimated that over 205 million gallons of oil were released into the Gulf.

5. Heavy Flood in Pakistan

Sharing its border with India,China,Afghanistan and Iran, Pakistan is a developing country with 160 million population. July 2010 came with world’s worst ever flood in the recorded human history hitting all the four provinces of Pakistan. According to United Nations over 20 million people are suffering and homeless with over 160,000 square kilometers affected as a result of the flooding, exceeding the combined total of the affected of 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. This is really big!!!! Floods have submerged 17 million acres of Pakistan’s most fertile crop land, have killed 200,000 livestock and have washed away massive amounts of grain. A major concern is that farmers will be unable to meet the fall deadline for planting new seeds in 2010, meaning a massive loss of food production in 2011, and potentially leading to long term food shortages. The agricultural damages are more than 2.9 billion dollars, according to recent estimates, and include over 700,000 acres of lost cotton crops, 200,000 acres of sugar cane and 200,000 acres of rice, in addition to the loss of over 500,000 tones of stocked wheat, 300,000 acres of animal fodder and the stored grain losses. FOR GROWN UPS SCHOOL... BUT CAN YOU REMEMBER? Are You at Home in Rome? For most of the answers to this quiz you will have to know the Roman figures. As they hand no zero to give their numbers a “place value,” it must have been very awkward when it came to multiplications! 1. What aid was used by the Romans to help with calculations? 2. The following is cut on a famous monument: MDCCLXXVI. What year does this represent? 3. Write 1987 in Roman figures. 4. What is the largest number you can write using these Roman numerals once each, I,C,X,V,L ? 5. What is the smallest number you can write using the same Roman numerals once each, I,C,X,V,L ? 6. Without changing to our Hindu-Arabic notation, find the value of CXVI+XIII+VI+CCLXV. 7. What Roman numbers of two integers between one and twenty become larger when left-hand integer is omitted? 8. Was a “groma” used by the Roman merchant, surveyor, cook, or sailor?

---------- ANSWERS ---------Are You at Home in Rome?

1. THE ABACUS 2. 1776 Letters were used by the Romans to represent various numbers, and they seem to follow the pattern set by the Greeks. 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000 I, V, X, L, C, D, M The Romans numerals on the monument therefore read as: M =100, D =500, C= 100, C=100, L = 50, X = 10, V = 5, I=1 These added together make 1776, and every American knows this date. 3. MDCCLXXXIX M=1000, D=500,C=100,C=100,L=50,X=10,X=10,X=10 and IX=9. Add these all together and the result is the 1789. 4. CLXVI The number is 166. 5. CXLIV This number is 144.XL is ten before fifty, which is forty.Similarly,IV is one before five, which is four. 6. CD C X VI X III VI CC LX V

CD The answer of the addition is four C’s, which is four hundred. It was the custom not to write four similar numerals consecutively. Hence, instead of writing four “hundred “(CCCC), the Romans wrote one hundred less than five hundred (CD). Placing the C before D meant C less than D, and placing it after D, as in DC, meant C more than D, So that CD is four hundred and DC is six hundred. 7. 4 & 9 The Romans numeral for four is IV. Therefore, when the left-hand integer is removed there remains the integer V. V is the Roman numeral for five. Hence the four changes to five. Similarly the Romans numeral for nine is IX, and when the left-hand integer I is removed there remains the Roman numeral X, which is ten. 8. SURVEYOR The “groma” was an important surveying instrument used by the Roman surveyors or agrimensores. As far as mathematics was concerned, the Romans were practical and no more. To them mathematics was a tool that helped them to construct and to measure. The agrimensor was a land or field-measurer, and in this work he used the groma. It was frequently carved on the tomb stones of Roman surveyors.

-------- QUIZ ANSWERS ------1. A. On trees

Cocoa beans come from cacao trees that grow in tropical regions of the world 2 C. Aluminum foil shortage

During World War II, production of Hershey’s Kisses was halted. Not because of a shortage of chocolate, but because the signature aluminum foil packaging was rationed. 3. D. Washington, D.C.

The Baby Ruth was named after the first child born in the White House - Ruth - who was born to President Grover Cleveland in 4. B. Heath Bar

Heath bars were included in U.S. soldiers' rations during World War II because they had been found to have a very long shelf life. Originally marketed as a health food, the Heath bar was advertising as using only the finest ingredients. One early ad read: "Heath for better health!" 1891 and later died in 1904. The candy manufacturer strongly denies any association with the famous Yankee. 5. C. Switzerland A Swiss chocolate maker, Daniel Peter, mixes Henri Nestle's condensed milk with chocolate and the two men found a company to manufacture the first milk chocolate. 6. D. 3 Musketeers

When it was first introduced in 1932, the 3 Musketeers bar was packaged to include three separate pieces of candy flavored vanilla, chocolate and strawberry -- thus the name THREE Musketeers. Causing some confusion to tourists worldwide, the 3 Musketeers bar is called a Milky Way in European countries, and the U.S. version of the Milky Way is called a Mars Bar. 7. C. Chili pepper

It was thick, dyed red and flavored with chili peppers. 8. D. Their sound

Hershey’s Kisses get their name from the sound and motion of the machines that produce them. It looks and sounds as if the machine is kissing the conveyor belt as it moves along. 9. A. Licorice

An Arabic Raya of Sunshine Originally

named Rana Alamuddin, the actress now known as Raya Meddine has benefitted from a lifetime of travel. Her father was a diplomat and she has lived in eight different countries, learning to speak fluently in Arabic, English, French, Italian and Spanish along the way. Raya is an acclaimed actress and a published writer, and has appeared in a variety of films and TV series including a principal role in almost 100 episodes of top American soap “The Young and the Restless” and, more recently, in the role of Annesha in the Hollywood blockbuster movie “Sex and the City 2”. CityPages caught up with Raya for this exclusive interview...

Rana Alamuddin a.k.a Raya Meddine Jameel Arif

"I found it to be a positive image of Arab women in an American blockbuster and was happy to be part of that. "

citypageskuwait.com

The first question that comes to anyone’s mind is obviously about the change of your name from Rana Alamuddin to Raya Meddine? What was the reason behind that? It’s actually a funny story. When I first arrived in L.A. my manager was sending me to auditions for Spanish and Latina roles because I speak and look Spanish. But the problem with that was that “rana” in Spanish means “frog” and it started bothering me after a while! I didn’t want to steer too far away from my original name so I just replaced Rana with Raya. As for my family name, the first time I was in Hollywood was not very long after 9/11. Stereotyping and prejudice against Arabs was at its peak and I didn’t want the industry to label me with “terrorist” roles or clichés of the “oppressed Arab woman” because of my family name. So I just shortened it to Meddine. Of course, I’m very proud of my heritage and in the Middle East I’m still known as Rana Alamuddin. As one of the very few Arab actresses in Hollywood, how do you rate such an experience? I believe I’m the first Arab actress to have left her country to pursue a career in Hollywood. It’s been a great challenge and a wonderful journey of selfdiscovery all at the same time. Starting out is especially difficult given the vastly competitive industry and the unbelievable amount of work you need to do, both as an artist and as a human being. But I have to say it’s been a life-changing experience in which I’ve gathered strength, self-knowledge and clarity. I’m very happy with what I’ve done so far and very much look forward to what’s ahead. What can you tell us about your childhood memories? I’ve been very blessed. My father was a diplomat and my mother an anthropologist so, along with my brother and sister, we spent our childhood and teenage years travelling from one country to the next. We lived in the United States as well as Tunisia, Yemen, Canada, Italy, Oman and Jordan. Very early on, a sense of world belonging, adventure and openness defined what life would be for me. I picked up many languages easily, felt like a citizen of the world and learned how to embrace differences in cultures and eccentricities in individuals without prejudice. I feel so incredibly lucky to have had that kind of upbringing. And my parents were wonderful at instilling in us both a sense of pride in our Arab heritage as well as an open-mind to the infinite possibilities of the world. What did you study? I went to French schools and then studied Communication Arts (Radio/ TV/Film) at the Lebanese American University in Beirut. That’s where I consolidated my desire to become an actress and a writer.

With Michael Patrick King director of Sex & the City

At Sex & the City2 Premiere

Did you always wanted to be an Actress? I had been acting all my life ... even before I knew it. Performing commercials in our garden for my parents; doing the craziest and funniest impersonations for a living room filled with adults… I had a very deep imagination and was quite inclined and fearless about expressing my emotions. Let’s say shyness is definitely not an attribute of mine! I’m not sure anyone specific inspired me to become an actress but I do remember a moment when I was five years old. We lived in Yemen at the time and I was watching a black-and-white Egyptian movie. The lead actress was crying her heart out and I clearly remember thinking that when I’d grow up I wanted to cry like that too and not be afraid of showing my emotions… I guess I’ve always felt the need to be connected with my feelings and to express them without censorship. I find that liberating. I would suffocate otherwise. How were you selected for a leading role in the American soap opera “The Young and The Restless”, and how was the experience? Like every other project in Hollywood, unless you’re an A-list celebrity you have to audition for a part. They were looking for a European woman to play the part of a sophisticated art consultant. My manager told the casting director that I spoke French, Italian and Spanish and that she should see me. I auditioned three times over a month and ended up booking the part. It was a wonderful experience on many levels. First of all, the Young and the Restless is considered to be the number one soap opera in the US and has been running for over thirty years, so it was amazing to be part of this huge pop-culture machine with inconceivably loyal fans. After I left the show, I was moved to tears by the heart-warming fan letters and gifts I had received. Another highlight for me was working with renowned soap actor Eric Braeden, who played my husband on the show. My own father had passed away just the year before and Eric became not just a dear friend but somewhat of a father figure and protector for me at that time. Which of the roles you have played has been your favourite so far? It’s hard to say because every part and every project brings something new to your life, to your growth and to your understanding of yourself. I have to say that playing the female lead in “To Hell with Meryl Streep”, directed by Nidal Al Achkar, was one of the most fulfilling experiences for me on a creative level. She is a brilliant, iconic woman and had a deep impact on me. Also having the chance to star alongside my husband Elie Karam in both the Arabic and French versions of the play in Beirut and Paris was an unforgettable experience that brought me so much joy and trust in acting. More recently, working on “Sex and the City 2”, although in a smaller part, was very fulfilling and exciting. What are your future goals? I am currently writing my first feature film, which is about an Arab female action hero. It will be a US-Middle Eastern co-production filming in both parts of the world, and is a very exciting project in which I’m very involved. I’m also open and looking forward to doing more films, not just in Hollywood but all over the Middle East. I want to collaborate with talented writers, directors and producers in Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and the Arab Gulf, whilst also keeping my eyes on Europe. The fact that I’ve lived all over the world and speak many languages makes it hard for me to isolate myself in a bubble. I want to do more varied and adventurous work; to explore beyond safe limits. I’m very much looking forward to that. On a more personal note, my husband and I are expecting our first baby soon, so that’s my favourite future goal by far! What can you tell us about your experience in “Sex and The City 2”? It was a phenomenal experience on all levels. First of all, I’d been an obsessive fan of the Sex and the City TV series for years, meaning that I’ve watched every episode of every season several times, and that I know many of the dialogues by heart. So when I read they were looking for an Arab actress I immediately

told my agent I was interested in auditioning. They were casting in NYC and London only, and not in L.A., so I was asked to put myself on tape and email it. That’s what I did, and I ended up being hired just off the tape. I never met the producers or director or cast members until my arrival in Morocco for the shoot. It was simply meant to be. The character of Annesha was one I related to and loved right away. I thought it was a wonderful representation of a modern Arab woman who is proud of her heritage and identity and is open to western culture at the same time. The character was classy yet playful, real yet unpredictable. What a woman is! I found it to be a positive image of Arab women in an American blockbuster and was happy to be part of that. We filmed in Morocco because production wasn’t allowed to shoot in Abu Dhabi (where the story actually takes place). It was heaven to be in Marrakech for three weeks, to discover this magical enchanting city and spend time with the girls, their children, the director and the producer. I have to say they are some of the classiest, most creative and kind people I’ve ever worked with. What was the nature of your role in the movie “Al Bosta”?

Raya & Eric on set of the Young & Restless

I played the role of Isabelle, a young journalist who’s striving for career fulfilment and love but ends up without either one. What are the differences between Hollywood movies and movies made in the Middle East? Many things. Budget, for one. As you know, there’s a lot of money poured into Hollywood films so development, pre-production, production and postproduction happen at the highest levels of professionalism and expertise. Hollywood has been mastering the business of cinema for decades. Middle Eastern cinema, on the other hand, is in its infancy and it would be unfair to make a comparison. There is a wonderful pool of brilliant talent, and some beautiful films have recently emerged from the Middle East but, generally speaking, most artists have limited resources and opportunities. That being said, things are shifting dramatically: thanks to prominent film festivals and hefty deals between production companies, there is a lot of interest and funding available in the Arab Gulf to support a very healthy and innovative movie industry. I believe that,if we merge our artists with our investors, we will be very successful. What do you believe to be your biggest achievement so far? That’s a very hard question to break down. I don’t see a specific moment or project or decision I made to be a better achievement than any other. I feel that having fought for the freedom to be my true self without fear or apologies has been my biggest achievement. And that includes my career choices, artistic choices, the way I choose to live my life and the man I’ve chosen as my life partner. Unfortunately, most Arab women have been raised to “peopleplease”, whether it’s pleasing their parents, their relatives, their community, their society or a man. That has been very detrimental in suppressing young women’s sense of confidence and empowerment in themselves. I feel that, in order to have a healthy striving society, there needs to be room for free, empowered women who are not punished for living out their true potential.

Theater Middle East & paris 2

What can we expect from you in the near future? More parts for me in films around the world, as well as my own film, writing and artistic projects. It’s so important to keep generating your own projects and to not wait for other people to offer you jobs. How often do you travel home to Lebanon? I was in Lebanon this past September. I hadn’t been there in three years so I was yearning to reconnect with my roots, my ancestors and my country. It was simply magical to rediscover what a rich, eclectic and poetic country I belong to. I was welcomed with so much love and appreciation, that it truly filled my heart with joy. What message do you have for your fans in Kuwait? Know who you are. Embrace who you are. Love who you are. Never be afraid of what others think of you or tell you that you can’t do. You can create the reality you want for yourself. Do you have a message for us at CityPages? Keep up your good work, always aspiring to reach new heights and break through old boundaries.

The 5 HEALTH TESTS YOU MUST have this year….. and the best time to do them…

If

you haven’t visited the gynae in five years and don’t know your good cholesterol from your bad, now’s the time to take control of your health, so get out and book appointments to have these five crucial tests this year. Make it your new year’s resolution. TEST-1 LIPID PROFILE BEST TIME: First thing in the morning High cholesterol level is a marker for heart diseases and strokes. It is therefore important to know your numbers. A lipid profile consists of a total-cholesterol, triglyceride (storage form of fat), HDL-Cholesterol (good cholesterol – the higher the better) and LDLcholesterol (bad cholesterol – the lower the better) level. To have the true results, it is best to have your lipid profile done first thing in the morning after an overnight fast of 10 hours. Luckily, if your score comes out in normal range you need to test your cholesterol again only in five years.

TEST-2 PAP SMEAR BEST TIME: 10 to 20 days after the start of your period The Pap smear test checks the changes in the cervical cells and shows any infection, abnormal cells, or cervical cancer. It is important that you have one done every two years after the age of 21, although the frequency increases after an abnormal result. Having a Pap smear done at anytime of the month is better than not having one at all, but your results will be most accurate if you schedule a test between 10 to 20 days after the first day of your period as your cervical mucus is at its thinnest during this time.

TEST-3 BLOOD SUGAR BEST TIME: First thing in the morning or two hours after a meal You should have your blood sugar tested twice a year or more than that if you begin to display any of the symptoms of diabetes, which include chronic thirst, excessive urination, sore feet, sudden extreme weight loss, infections that are not healing, loss of libido and blurred vision. It is important to know that you cannot diagnose diabetes from just one abnormal test, so even if your first test (preferable a fasting test)

Dr. Nazia Nausheen indicates heightened glucose levels, you will need a second abnormal test done at least two hours after your last meal to confirm that if you have diabetes.

TEST-4 MAMMOGRAM BEST TIME: During the first 20 days of your menstrual cycle Although routine mammograms are not recommended for women younger than 40, if you have a relative who has or had breast cancer you need to have a baseline mammogram when you are five years younger than the age at which she was diagnosed. Various research studies have shown that scheduling your mammogram during the first 14 days of your menstrual cycle (day one is the day your period starts) can double the chances of an accurate reading, as your breast tissues tends to be less dense during this time, making small, hardto-see lumps more easily detectable. This is also the best time of the month to do a self-exam (which you should start doing in your early 20s) as your breasts will be less tender and swollen. TIP: Don’t wear deodorant or antiperspirant on the day of your mammogram – it can interfere with the reading by appearing on the X-ray as white spots.

TEST-5 BLOOD PRESSURE BEST TIME: Any time, as long as you are relaxed This routine test is even more important if you are over 35, pregnant, have a family history of high blood pressure, or a history of heart or kidney problems. Apart from a short spike in your blood pressure as you wake (as your body adjusts to subconscious anxiety at the start of a new day), your blood pressure should be the same through the day. If your first test shows high blood pressure, you will need a repeat test within two weeks – high blood pressure cannot be diagnosed from one abnormal reading. For the most accurate test, arrive for your first test in good time and allow yourself for a few minutes to relax beforehand.

23 In memory of and dedication to “Denise”

--- The maze --Ah, my God of love and all of which the heart ever feels within, whilst ‘amen’ ought to prevail over all hardships and happiness ever encountered in this life which you have so gracefully granted us to experience , there sometimes comes an allay more narrow than any other met before and when the forbidden word ‘why’ becomes so hard not to utter.

---And by the river i saw… --And when looking into the river nearby which i sat… And the truth reflected by the beat of the heart that can never lie against a thousand other lies, finally spoke, ‘Love’was that which i heard, And its voice was louder than any crowd… And its power was something that had grown faster than light itself and felt like a strange pigment of the heart unseen before… And its warmth was like the chimney of the wintery days and the child who wants to spend his entire life beside it… And its words were uttered in a tongue you had never heard before as if love had re invented a new language once words became too deem , too little and powerless to the size of the great feeling…

And yet, the travail of a lifetime engendered by the climbing of mountains and the reaching of heavenly skies which i had harbored, suddenly seemed an easier thing than the speaking of that which i felt within…

--- Forces of life --And there is no question that the strength of one will always be best understood by another carrying equal strength and even though the complexity of infinite measures and proportions withheld within the strength that composes the two might be different…the whole remains the same!

--- Speaking of the five --Water… the aqua vitae of life and the answer to your many thirsts, Fire… that shall give you light and heal the wounds for as long as you use it wisely , Air… the one where you shall see and fly with as you breathe, Earth…and all of the soft wheat that grows from it and feed the hungry child, Ether…the forgotten one but nonetheless the heavenly material.

--- Life and trains --How many worthy goods would you happily give away for The Hand to

take you back to the kingdom of your happy childhood upon your humble request, and thereby live the days when seeing was believing, and equally live the nights when after your prayer, dreaming under the sky full of stars was all that you ever asked for… A time when the heart prevailed over the intellect which you had yet to discover, and foremost the time when you could easily tab in all the subtle energies of every living and non living things that surrounded you and that composed your world … A world that was timeless but that has now become priceless if you but recall the immensity of the innocence you have left. Ah! How many of us have retained the heart of the child within and still live their life as a grand adventure?..

--- Les vents --And the winds that have carried me throughout this life are surely those that have brought you to me, And the winds always know best for the swirls of life they carry, ultimately bear a much bigger plan than the eyes can see…

Similarly, Social Media is all about communicating and engaging with customers across channels online. With the rise of Facebook and Twitter, networking is just a click away. Brands need to engage with customers in a way that allows people to share and exchange information. Social Media is all about gaining visibility through developing human relationships. Posting content or talking to your customers increases loyalty and helps you win new customers in the process. This creates credibility and trust. It's important to have friends, to share knowledge and information, to network and make life a bit easier. The same applies when it comes to virtual friends. It's great to see that you got a whole lot of friends out there. (The average number of friends a person has on Facebook is 150.) It overwhelms us when we get so many friend requests, likes and comments. There is a transformation taking place, we are a whole new personality. We love talking to friends via a wall and through pokes. It keeps us going. Social Media is changing the way we maintain relationships. What we do in life is replicated online. Take for instance, LinkedIn- the fastest growing PNS. We all want to be recognized for our work and our skills and talent. LinkedIn recommendations is a great way to get noticed for the right reasons. Twitter allows us to share information to a whole lot of people with similar interests. There many such examples of online activity that is closely related to 'social science'. Social Science is the way forward in Social Media. when Neuro-economist Paul J. Zak (Claremont Graduate University) has discovered, and scientifically proven for the first time, that social networking triggers the release of the feel-good hormone, Oxytocin. Oxytocin (not Oxycontin, the addicting painkiller) is the hormone which triggers a mother's labor and delivery, thus fostering the bond between mother/child. It seems reasonable that it would also trigger other types of related coupling and trust behaviors. It has been proven that Oxytocin release also produces feelings of affection and contentment. A general sense of calm and love are also triggered by the release of this powerful hormone. Oxytocin remains dormant and stored in our brains and in other parts of our bodies. It is the release of this hormone which produces the feelings. So strong is the effect, that most people would not need to be encouraged to try those activities which release Oxytocin. In fact, they may naturally be addicted to them e.g. octo-mom, "crackberry", etc.

Social Science

as we know is the study of society and relationships. We are all born into a society and are constantly communicating to people around us. The need to interact and communicate is what keeps a society/community well bound.

Social Networking and Oxytocin ?.... The Feel-Good Hormone Zak's study of Oxytocin and social networking revolved around time spent on Blackberry use, Facebooking, MySpace and Twitter and the measurement of Oxytocin levels. I think that these social networking tools simply facilitate and, in some cases, replace the now old-fashioned face-to-face conversation. That conversation is now known as "social networking." Its content was built from the question, "What's new with you?" All of these new social media tools are simply a new way of "broadcasting" the answer to the age-old question of: what is new with you? There are other known health benefits related to networking as well. Additionally, we know that being connected to people and having many friends has long been associated with increased lifespan and the ability to ward off illness. There is a inborn human desire to communicate with others. Isn't that the most viral definition of social networking?

I believe that this data should be a wake-up call for every company who is revisiting their marketing programs and determining whether or not social media is "real or here to stay." Today, some type of social media strategy should be part of every firm's marketing plan. People want to connect with others who have shared interests via the hand-held mobile network, laptop computers/Internet and otherwise.

Research tells us that when Oxytocin is released, trust and contentment increase while fear and uneasiness decrease. This sounds strangely similar to the longstanding, widely-known goal of "brand loyalty" which companies strive to achieve through a variety of means. It appears that the most viral way to create brand loyalty may indeed be word-of-mouth.

What has yet to proven is whether this "feel-good" feeling is or can be translated into increased and measurable consumer spending habits and patterns. But that data can't be far behind.

Smart marketers will create simple, intuitive ways in which their users, vendors, customers and so forth will be able to connect and "reach out and touch someone." Perhaps Bell Telephone Systems was just ahead of their time. Today it will be on your handheld mobile device rather than your pink princess phone...:) Status : Keep Networking...Happy New Year all

Why not get “Berned” this Spring?

Bern,

the capital of Switzerland, is a beautiful, medieval city founded in 1191, and might just be the perfect place to go this spring if you are looking for history and culture. This capital city presents an impressive example of medieval town architecture in Europe and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The Museum of Fine Arts has one of the most distinguished collections in Switzerland and its collection spans eight centuries from paintings and sculptures to photos and videos. Running until February is the exhibition, ‘Lust and Vice: The Seven Deadly Sins from Dürer to Nauman’ displaying works on this theme from medieval times to the present. (For more information, check out their website on http://www.museen-bern.ch). If you visit Bern in March you can experience the colourful atmosphere of the Carnival which will be taking place from 10th-12th March, and which is now the third largest event in the country. During the three days, masked revellers swarm the streets of the Old Town. The Carnival music bands (known as Guggenmusik-Cliques) wander through the streets of Bern and the city dances to their noisy music. Definitely an event not to be missed! A Bear is the official symbol of Bern and, if you are visiting the city with children, a great place to go is the Bear Park which was inaugurated in 2009. The park covers an area of 6,000 square metres and is home to two bears, Björk and Finn, and their two cubs Berna and Ursina. Visitors get a good insight into the lives of the bears whilst strolling through the park and watching them play in this huge area made up of forests, bushes and caves - a perfect place for bears to live. There is even a river within the park where you can watch the bear family bathe, and various viewpoints where you can

closely observe them going about their daily business. Guided bear tours can also be organised if you wish. Admission to the park is free, and it is open every day of the year. If you want to enjoy Bern from a different perspective, then go on a Flyer electric bicycle tour. These tours are self guided, but recommended tour routes can be downloaded from the internet and are also available at the tourist centre situated at the railway station in Bern. Each tour starts and ends in the city and lasts between three to five hours. One of the tours is the ‘City-Countryside’ tour which is defined by the interchange between city and countryside. Find yourself in the countryside a few minutes after leaving the city and then back in the city again a few minutes later. The highlights of the tour are Jegenstorf Castle and Schönbühl saltwater baths and spa. (Tour brochures can be downloaded from the website http://www.bern.com). Switzerland is famed, of course, for its expertise in timepiece craftsmanship, and you will find Switzerland’s third oldest clock features in the medieval clock tower of the Zytglogge, a major landmark of Bern. So, having established that Bern is a beautiful city full of culture and plenty of

musea, it’s worth noting that it’s also a great starting point for visiting the surrounding area. However, you’ll need to remember to wrap up warm if you go in the early part of the year and be aware that, during the winter, temperatures are likely to dip below freezing point! The Marktgasse is the district where the old town of Bern begins, and the dominant architecture in this area is magnificent- many of the houses are joined together with arcades in the front. This area is filled with little shops and cafés, and you would do well to stop at one of them to enjoy a delicious hot chocolate drink. Another landmark is the house where Einstein lived whilst he was working in Bern. It is fascinating to see where he lived with his wife and son and to imagine them going about their daily business. On the third floor of the house is an exhibition displaying some of his work and a presentation of his biography. You can enjoy a guided tour, but be sure to book this at least 5 working days in advance to secure your place! Not to be missed is the market which takes place on Saturdays at the Bundesplatz. This is where everyone goes to buy fresh produce and flowers. The atmosphere is great and you may easily leave with various cheeses to bring back home. All things considered, Bern may not be an obvious first choice for a holiday destination but is a great place to go for a short vacation.

There’s No Business Like Show Business! A

lot of the big Hollywood names seem to make a transition from their starring roles to the Director’s chair, and I was delighted to have been afforded a similar opportunity by the Kuwait Little Theatre. Of course, the situation’s aren’t exactly identical because I’m no star (and have appeared on stage only twice); I took on a role as Producer rather than Director; and no astronomical payments were involved as we are talking, here, about a bunch of enthusiastic and unpaid volunteers in a community theatre! But, nevertheless, to me it was a fairly big deal as I had never before been given the responsibility for producing a theatrical performance. In fact, when the Director (Meryl Bunce) first approached me to take on the Producer role I had to research to discover what a Producer actually does – definitions appeared to be unclear and varied but, on the whole, I determined that a Producer is pretty much a project manager who is responsible for everything except the acting. Since Meryl had conceived and written the script for the KLT’s 2010 pantomime “Babes in the Wood” it seemed logical that, in her position as Director, she would be entirely responsible for the actors and all on-stage activity and I was more than happy to leave all this to Meryl and her chosen song-and-dance experts (Musical Director Mike Hassan and Choreographer Lisa Bowdery). With the script finalised, and all audition material published on the website for anyone who responded to the call to auditions, my first major task was to assist Meryl and Mike with the casting decisions. This turned out to be really difficult, as many of those auditioning turned out to be people I knew ... but the important thing was for us to match the right people to the specific characters’ roles and to ensure we chose the best overall cast that would work together on stage and give the audiences a great show. As with all auditions, not everyone who wanted a part was successful and there were, sadly, some difficult calls to make to those who would be disappointed this

time. But with casting complete (and I’ll return to this later) Meryl could start her rehearsals and I could start to encourage an assembled backstage team to work on the set building and painting, costumes and props. In each of those areas, I was delighted to have the support of some excellent and enthusiastic volunteers – too numerous to mention everyone by name, but we were all in awe of the sets designed by Kristen Falcioni and thrilled with the wonderful costumes made by newcomers Virginia Vogt and Catherine Bromwich. Everything backstage was coming together nicely, so I was then able to turn my own attentions to something I had seen as more of a personal challenge. For me, when I was back in England, a trip to the theatre was more than just going to see a bunch of actors perform on stage – it was a totally magical and exciting experience that started with the anticipation of a visit to the theatre itself, with its big promotional boards on the facade and the stars’ names in lights, and continued as I passed through the foyer which would be buzzing with excitement as the expectant audience viewed photos of cast and performances on the walls and flicked through the souvenir programme, perhaps even treating themselves to some promotional merchandise, and then in to see the show itself. Previous visits to the theatre in Kuwait had lacked such excitement, even when the shows themselves had been really good, so I wanted to try and re-create the “total experience” for our KLT audiences when they came to panto. Of course, my

plans would involve spending some money and, with an already tight budget, I was grateful to have secured help from a couple of sponsors. And so it was thanks to Crown Relocations that our audiences were welcomed to the theatre by banners and over-sized cast posters (illuminated for the evening performances); that the front-of-house team could be instantly recognisable in their co-ordinated polo shirts; and that they could enjoy an exceptionally professional souvenir programme (with thanks to Adel AlAnsari for his expertise in design). And it was thanks to IKEA and the Al-Homaizi Group that we were able to dress the foyer, and entry to the auditorium, with some fresh new seasonal decorations. Listening to people as they arrived, I believe these small touches were noticed and appreciated, and helped to generate the sense of anticipation and excitement for which I had hoped. So when the lights dimmed, the music started and the curtains finally opened, the audience was in a good mood and ready to be entertained. Success would now be in the hands of the cast and crew and, I am delighted to say, they delivered brilliantly entertaining performances for all eight shows! This is where I return to the subject of casting, because the chemistry between characters worked well and played to the strengths of the chosen actors such that the entire company shone like true professionals on stage. Fresh to the KLT stage, Liz Young (Robin Hood) and Sara Al-Kandery (Maid Marion) enchanted everyone with their singing and their tale of love; as the fairy “Gobsprite”, Kristen Falcioni earned some new fans with her rapping performances; Nevil Hampton and Sharon Williams were pure evil as the Sheriff of Nottingham and Ursula Sourdough; comedy was provided by double-act Matt Aston and Kirsty McDonagh as the pathetic servants Gurge and Tate, and by Nanny Pepper (Harven Danelian) and Tom-Tom (Tim Waddell). The show would not have been complete – or even possible – without some “babes” in the wood, and we were treated to some fine performances by Eliot and Lauren Bunce (as the Honeyduke children) and by Alex Layfield and Emma Pearson in supporting roles. The Merry Men and ensemble were all stars in their own right, although special mentions should go to Larey Marks for his ever-extravagant characterisation of Will Scarlet, to Greg Dunlop for leaving his backstage role to appear on stage when one of the cast fell ill (and, amazingly, learning the part in under 24 hours!!) and to Tino Abrahamian for his memorable contribution to Lisa’s “Bad” dance routine! To those I’ve not been able to mention by name – and there are lots of you both on and off stage – I say again that you were all stars without whom the panto would not have been the success it became.

As I finish this article, and turn my attention to finalising the panto accounts, I hope that all of you who came to the theatre in December had a truly wonderful theatrical experience and will return to see another show. If you missed the panto, it will be available soon on dvd from www.theklt.com so you will be able to see it for yourself – again and again! And finally, if you’d like to get involved either backstage or even treading the boards, make sure you keep updated on future audition calls by visiting the KLT website. Auditions for the musical “Hairspray” will be held during the week 17th to 22nd January ... perhaps I shall see you there?

Towering Holiday Tree Made of 86 Shopping Carts

We've

seen a lot of wacky Christmas trees made from everything from beer bottles to bicycles in our day but never one made of shopping carts! That's right, 86 metal shopping carts balance atop one another to form this 33-foot-tall holiday tree at the Frank Gehry-designed Edgemar mall in Santa Monica, California. Designed by artist Anthony Schmitt, this beacon of holiday spirit is attracting a lot of attention with its glittering good looks and rather unconventional material. “The shopping cart tree symbolizes both generosity and abundance, as well as acknowledging those less fortunate where their whole world may be housed in a cart," says Schmitt. “The shopping cart tree symbolizes both generosity and abundance, as well as acknowledging those less fortunate where their whole world may be

housed in a cart. We see shopping carts every day and take them for granted. Individually the beauty of an everyday object may become invisible, but in quantity you can’t miss it,” says Anthony Schmitt of his design. This actually isn’t the first year that the shopping cart tree has gone up – Schmitt conceived the idea 14 years ago at the request of Abby Sher, the former owner and developer of Edgemar, and the Colwell and Belden families have continued the annual tradition of commissioning the tree since buying Edgemar in 2007. The 2010 tree is made out of mostly full size carts with some smaller versions at the top to create a forced perspective of height. The carts are supported by an internal structure that remains nearly invisible, allowing the carts to seem like they were merely stacked atop one another and left in that perilous formation.

Harvard Engineering Team Working On Biogas-Powered Laptop

is rapidly becoming a popular source of renewable energy, and now a team at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is investigating a method to use methane in laptop fuel cells and batteries. While methane is technically a fossil fuel (as a component of natural gas), it is also created during the break-down of biomass. With that in mind, the Harvard team are investigating a method to create fuel cells that are not only powered using renewable sources, but also don’t use expensive materials such as platinum.

Los Heroes: Fun 70's Building Rehab Clad in a Rainbow Skin

The team, led by researcher Shriram Ramanathan, is currently working on a solid oxide fuel cell that doesn’t utilize any platinum. They are also working on a micro-scale solid oxide fuel cell that operates at the relatively low temperature of 500 degrees Celsius. The fuel cell has been designed to use methane, which is much less expensive to use than hydrogen. The team is hoping to develop the technology to work at approximately 300 degrees Celsius, which team leader Ramanathan describes as the “sweet spot” where common, inexpensive catalysts work well with methane.

Murtinho

Raby Arquitectos was challenged with transforming an old grey 70s building into a vibrant new space, and by the looks of the finished product, we think they succeeded. Located in Santiago, Chile, the rainbow-hued building is home to the general offices of Caja de Compensación Los Heroes, which works with retirees. As such, the architects played upon the concept of leisure and fun and clad its dreary walls with an eye-catching multi-colored facade that also works as a UV filter. The use of colored panels to line the sides of the building accomplishes that goal in a way that required much less materials and energy than tearing down the existing structure or erecting a new one. Caja de Compensación Los Heroes is an independent, non profit institution whose role is to administrate social security funds for economic help for retirees through small loans. Since the people who visit the office the most are senior citizens who no longer work, the architects wanted to create a relaxed, fun environment. The use of colored panels to line the sides of the building accomplishes that goal in a way that required much less materials and energy than tearing down the existing structure or erecting a new one. But the transformation didn’t end there. The interior of the building was also revamped and given a circular core that also speaks to a more easy-going, fluid atmosphere. The interior temperature is regulated by the same bright double facade that gives Los Heroes so much character. The panels work to trap solar energy using UV ray filters that protect the inside of the building from heat, thereby cutting down on air conditioning usage and costs.

Ramanathan said of the innovation: “Low temperature is a holy grail in this field. If you can realize high-performance solid-oxide fuel cells that operate in the 300–500°C range, you can use them in transportation vehicles and portable electronics, and with different types of fuels.” Ramanathan hopes that the technology can be used to create a low-cost, methane-powered, micro-scale fuel cellfor laptops and other portable devices. It is hoped that it will one day replace conventional laptop batteries that have limited lifespans, are made from finite materials and can be quite expensive. Of course, there is the question of how you would charge ‘methane powered batteries’ — it will most likely be done via the purchase of biogas from municipal wastewater treatment facilities.

Electrified TRON Ice Hotel Suite Opens in Sweden

With

the much anticipated 3D TRON: Legacy coming out in theaters next week, a set of British designers are celebrating the Disney movie with a suite at the famous IceHotel above the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The electric blue Tron-inspired lighting scheme is achieved by cutting grooves into the ice, inserting energy efficient EL wire and then icing over the wire to keep it in place. Ben Rousseau and Ian Douglas–Jones' art suite at the IceHotel, "Legacy Of The River", is part of their campaign to launch a new line of illuminated furniture and interiors products due out early 2011. EL wire, or electroluminescent wire, is an energy efficient lighting technology used for a wide variety of applications. An EL wire is composed of a copper wire coated in a phosphor that glows when an alternating current is applied to it. The energy efficient technology allows just a few hundred feet of EL wire to be driven by AA batteries for several hours. Ben Rousseau and Ian Douglas–Jones, a designer and an architect by training, joined forces to work on this project as well an illuminated furniture line to be released next year. The duo were asked to create a TRON-inspired art suite for the Icehotel this winter using the EL wire to provide a futuristic lighting scheme. They had 13 days to build out the interior of the hotel room suite, install the lighting and polish and buff out the interior furnishings, which includes wall panels, a reindeer pelt covered bed and a table. Grooves for the EL wire were cut into ice slabs with a variety of tools and then the wire was laid into the grooves and water was used to create new ice to “glue” the wire into place.

we get older, different parts of our body start to break down and not function as before. For some of us, it is our vision that starts to deteriorate, and for others, their hearing. Teen

sensation Justin Bieber has yet another channel of income – it is pretty insane to see young pups these days raking in the dough like nobody’s business, when back in our day, we had to break our backs just to earn a quarter of a dollar an hour. Well, as mentioned earlier, Justin Bieber will have a very Merry Christmas as he has yet another source of dough to rely on, although we’re pretty sure that profits from this will not be as lucrative as that of his recording contracts. The golden goose we’re talking about? Well, Justin Bieber has rolled out a new line of headphones, known as Justbeats by Dr. Dre. To make it all the more exclusive, you can only get it from Best Buy stores in the US and on BestBuy.com. It does seem to make sense though, as Justin Bieber is all about the music, and he sees this as an opportunity to team with Beats by Dr. Dre and Monster, where the latter is a global leader in high performance headphones and AV accessories.

Don’t get put off by the $23.99 price tag for something that requires manual labor – at least you can be sure that even your sensitive information in the office can be disposed of properly even when there is a blackout, as you need not rely on a power outlet or batteries, using good ol’ fashioned hand crank power instead. Saudi in deal to build cars for Gulf, North Africa Ghazal -1 Saudi first carmade raises the audience at the Geneva International Exhibition of Cars 2010

A Saudi university announced a half-billion-dollar deal with a South Korean firm to manufacture cars for the Gulf and North African markets, the official SPA news agency reported. The agreement sees the establishment of a motor-manufacturing enterprise with 500 million dollars in capital aiming to produce a prototype in two years, it quoted King Saud University (KSU) president Abdullah al-Othman as saying. He said the university's investment subsidiary, Wadi al-Riyadh Technology, would control 10 percent of the capital and the unnamed South Korean firm 30 percent, with the balance offered to private investors. In June, King Saud University, one of the kingdom's largest, unveiled the country's first locally built car, an all-terrain vehicle called "Ghazal 1" (Gazelle), with plans to manufacture 20,000 units a year. The vehicle is designed for the desert climate of Gulf countries and was produced "in collaboration with several major companies, including Motorola, Mercedes-Benz and Magna Canada," Arab News quoted Said Darwish, an industrial engineering professor at KSU, as saying at the time. Saudi Arabia, the world's largest exporter of crude oil, is seeking to develop local industry, particularly by training its own managers and experts, and by technology transfer.

The Department of Industrial Engineering at King Saud University, utilitarian vehicle Itaiwir Sports "Ghazal -1" which was disclosed at the Geneva show, which is one of the largest and most important International car forums The project included training 55 students in the Department of Industrial Engineering, has been developed specific objectives for the vehicle and the most important environmental compatibility with the climate and topography of the Gulf region. Of course, used the University of outside expertise to give students the best opportunities for the development of the vehicle, where it was the design in collaboration with design firm Italian "Studio Torino" StudioTorino with hired company "Magna Steyr" Canada to provide expertise and industrial engineering, especially as Ghazal -1 has been developed on the same basis as the category - G, a vehicle manufactured by Magna for the Mercedes - Benz. And are now considering investing 400 million euros for the production of 20 000 units a year of this car over three years. The project started in April 2009 and will be completed in May. The King Saud University is one of the best 300 universities in the world Dr. Said Darwish, Professor, Department of Industrial Engineering at King Saud University "committed to the students not to change the basic specifications of origin of the wheelbase and mechanical components, but they were given full freedom for innovation in the rest of the elements for achieving a new car", and the length of the vehicle 4.8 meters by 1.9 meters.

Eco-friendly transport for Bats.

In our

November issue we introduced you to an authentic, Americanstreet-legal replica of Gotham City’s original Batmobile that is currently manufactured and sold in the United States. Just one month later, in our December issue, we featured the KTM X-Bow Superlight which is a car that has no connection to the Batman brand but looks as though it could easily have been inspired by the automobiles favoured by the famous caped crusader. Now, in a natural progression, we transport you from the sublime to the (arguably) ridiculous and present to you ...... the BatSmart! Even millionaire Bruce Wayne has to be eco-friendly sooner or later so, for times when Batman simply has to fit his Batmobile into a narrow parking space, this recent addition to the Batcave garage may prove handy. Designed by George Barris, the creator of the original Lincoln Futura-based Batmobile from the mid '60s, the Batsmart features a faux turbine and fake rocket launchers in combination with a full custom body kit that includes rear Bat-fins and parachutes and, at the front, a menacing, rodent-style pointed nose complete with Joker picture.

Reaching the interior through a top-hinged gull-wing door there are high-quality alcantara sports seats and the whole interior stays true to the exterior colours – black with orange accents. Unfortunately, there are no power or other performance upgrades to the basic Smart ForTwo on which this customized extravaganza has been based, so it retains its 3 piston, 70 horsepower engine and a weirdly jerky semi-automatic transmission; but who wants to make a quick getaway in a car like this? Oh, right … possibly Batman! Around 40 BatSmarts were built for sale to collectors, but their seconduser value has been disappointing. One BatSmart that was placed on internet auction site EBay last year failed to meet its owner’s reserve price when it achieved a top bid of just $16,100. The BatSmart could be called many things; ridiculous, silly, weird, funny ... and did we hear someone say 'batty'?

"125 years of Italian Magnificence"

Exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris December 10, 2010 – January 12, 2011 "I always visit Bulgari, because it is the most important museum of contemporary art. Andy Warhol

The

Grand Palais hosted the opening of a retrospective exhibition devoted to Bulgari, the Roman jewelry house that celebrated its 125th anniversary last year. Housed in the museum's nave, the exhibition had been organized under the high patronage of the Office of the President of the Italian Republic and the Italian Prime Minister's Office, and was opened to the public from December 10 through January 12, 2011. It will be the first large-scale retrospective by a jewelry house at the Grand Palais. Entitled "125 years of Italian Magnificence," the exhibition retraced the main chapters in Bulgari's history and the evolution of the esthetic that made the brand a driving force of the "Italian school," from the opening of the first shop on Via Sistina in 1884 through the modern day. This fascinating saga will be illustrated by more than 600 masterpieces of jewelry, watch- and clockmaking, and the decorative arts, including some one hundred exclusive pieces that will be on public display for the first time. Certain pieces come from the collection of the Bulgari Museum, an exceptional trove of historic treasures conserved in the company's archives, while others are from private collections. Visitors will be able to admire three pieces owned by the Grimaldi family, including a necklace that belonged to Princess Grace. The exhibition consisted of eight sections arranged in chronological order. The visitor's path starts with a collection of silver objects created in the late 19th century by Sotirio Bulgari, a Greek silversmith blessed with a creative mind and keen business sense. Next, visitors could discover a space dedicated to the designs of the 1920s and 1930s. These pieces, a series of diamond jewels inspired by the art deco movement, reflect the huge success enjoyed by the house, which was then headed by the founder's two sons, Giorgio and Costantino Bulgari. The next room presented creations from the 1940s and 1950s, a period during which Bulgari's designs were heavily influenced by French jewelry styles. This followed by a section devoted to the 1960s, a decade marked by a radical change that would prove crucial in defining the house's identity. It was during these years that Bulgari developed the distinctive features that would make the brand world-famous: bold, stylized forms, understated volumes and strikingly original color combinations defined an inimitable style, a genuine "Italian school" of jewelry that contrasted with the more classical French jewelry. The next three rooms housed creations from the 1970s, very much influenced by pop art and praised by Andy Warhol, the 1980s, a time of daring, inventive design inspired by the Italian Renaissance, and the 1990s, characterized by unexpected combinations of materials as well as the introduction of a "ready-to-wear" concept of jewelry. The final section of the exhibition under the glass dome of the Grand Palais featured an astonishing structure of mirrors fitted together to form an immense diamond. The continuity of the Bulgari style in the 2000s represented by a selection of pieces, including a stunning necklace adorned with a Burmese sapphire of more than 321 carats. But the real stars of this section were the jewels themselves, spectacular creations worn by Anna Magnani, Monica Vitti, Claudia Cardinale, Sophia Loren, Romy Schneider, Ingrid Bergman and Gina Lollobrigida, as well as Empress Soraya of Persia. A separate room was exclusively devoted to the fabulous private collection of Elizabeth Taylor, never before seen in France.

BERNER donates goods towards construction of new PAWS shelter German parts provider BERNER has shown their softer side and lived up to their company motto ‘Experts With Passion’ by contributing goods towards the construction of the new PAWS animal shelter.

At a site visit of their new shelter in Kabd, BERNER of Kuwait was able to interact with the animals currently being sheltered there, offer advice on the construction taking place, and hand over donated tools and parts.

to play a part in developing Kuwait’s society further have been vital in the construction efforts, and PAWS - and more importantly the animals - have felt the impact of their aid.”

The Protecting Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) was recently mandated to vacate their animal shelter located on government land in Wafra, but were generously donated a plot of land by Sheik Nawaf Al Sabah in Kabd. However, PAWS is a non-government funded animal protection society completely dependent upon donations from the public, and was facing a crisis in funding the construction of their new shelter.

Commenting on the donation, Stefan Moench, General Manager, Berner of Kuwait, said: “We at BERNER look at the big picture in all we do, from taking into account how a tool will affect a person’s body to the responsibilities companies hold in being a part of their community. Therefore, when PAWS requested from the public that aid be given in order to confront their crisis in continuing to provide shelter to abandoned animals, we knew that BERNER could and had to play a part in the solution.”

Pro-Design Group introduce Roche Bobois’ hottest new collection from infamous fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier With the impending launch of the Roche Bobois showroom by Kuwait’s premier interior design and contracting house, PrO-Design Group is introducing the latest collaboration between Roche Bobois and Jean Paul Gaultier, to be available upon opening their showroom in the new Al Mazaya 7 Zones, located in the heart of the Shuwaikh commercial district. The furniture outfit enlisted the infamous fashion designer to create the new pieces, called Jean Paul Gaultier Pour Roche Bobois Paris, to commemorate its golden 50th anniversary. Highlighting the collaboration between one of fashion’s edgiest designers and Roche Bobois is the fusion of Gaultier’s signature style and the classic work of famed, and

recently deceased, German designer Hans Hopfer’s iconic Mah Jong sofa, created for Roche Bobois in the 1970’s. Gaultier paid tribute to the master by keeping the modular seating’s shape but updating it by swapping out its hippie-chic upholstery for the striped-canvas Sailor, a nautical number that draws on one of his favorite themes. In addition to Sailor, Gaultier also came up with six other upholstery options for the arrangement, with names like Dollar Bill, Tattoo, and Kiss. The Mah Jong sofa from Roche Bobois and Jean Paul Gaultier and other Roche Bobois pieces will be available upon the opening of Kuwait’s first Roche Bobois showroom in the new Al Mazaya 7 Zones in Shuwaikh.

The legendary designer of the Porsche 911 turned 75

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche celebrated his 75th birthday Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, Honorary Chair of the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, celebrated his 75th birthday on 11 December 2010. As a designer of true genius, F.A. Porsche was the creator of such legendary automobiles as the 904 Carrera GTS, or the Porsche 911. After stepping down from the management of Porsche KG, in 1972 he founded the “Porsche Design“ Studio and achieved worldwide fame and recognition as an independent product designer. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was born on 11 December 1935 in Stuttgart, the eldest son of Dorothea and Ferry Porsche. As a child his world was already influenced by automobiles, with him spending a lot of time in the design offices and development workshops of his grandfather Ferdinand Porsche.

In 1943 the family, together with the company of Porsche, relocated to Austria where he also went to school. After returning to Stuttgart in 1950, he passed the final school examination and registered at the College of Design in Ulm. In 1958 F.A. Porsche joined the design department of what was at that time Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche KG.

His design talent very soon became apparent when, with the Type 754 “T7“, he formally presented to the world a new direction for the 356 Series. In 1962 he took charge of the management of the Porsche Design Studio, and one year later took the world by storm with the Porsche 901 (also referred to as the 911). Besides passenger cars, F.A. Porsche was also deeply involved in the design of the racing cars in the 1960’s. Among his most famous designs were the Formula One Type 804 racer, or the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, which motoring fans have always regarded as one of the finest and most
