Backstage with Mamma Mia! A personal journey Paul Tunbridge

T

he date was February 12th. It was a Friday. And it was with some trepidation that I ventured along to the Kuwait Little Theatre in Ahmadi to present myself at the auditions for Mamma Mia. I had seen the movie several times and loved it, and for some strange reason I had thought it would be fun to be a part of the theatre’s own production. Thus I found myself sitting in my car outside the theatre watching quite a few auditionees practising their dance moves in the car park. They all looked much younger than me, and they looked keen. I was already having second thoughts when I answered my mobile phone to a friend who, when I explained my foolishness at thinking I could be part of the production, suggested I could always volunteer to help backstage. What an excellent idea! I could still be involved in what would doubtless be a fun production, whilst leaving the stage to those with genuine talent. After all, it had been a good few years since I had done any acting (at school), and I am well aware of my limited ability to sing and dance, 6

but I can help to build things, and paint things, and even move them about on stage if required! So I went inside to volunteer my support.

as written on a piece of A4, so I admitted defeat and decided it would be better for me to remain hidden behind the scenes. At least I had tried.

Having arrived half-way through the auditions, I was introduced to Kirsty McDonagh (the director) and accepted her invitation to sit in on the auditions whilst awaiting an opportunity to tour backstage. I had missed the dancing section, but caught the singing and acting auditions. It didn’t actually seem to be too difficult, and I found myself thinking I could do just as well as some of the guys that were auditioning for the parts. I haven’t much of a voice but, in my opinion, neither did some of the others who were trying out. Figuring that I had nothing to lose but my dignity, I found myself back at the theatre on the following Monday and submitted myself to the audition process. As it happens, this merely confirmed my inability to string together any more than two dance steps, my extremely limited vocal talent and even my struggle to read more than a few words without deviating from the words

The big surprise came three days later, when I received a call from the director advising that I had been cast as Bill, one of the dads! I questioned Kirsty’s sanity at such a decision, and began to wonder what I had let myself in for!! But there was no going back, and I went along to meet the rest of the team for a first read-through of the script the following day. And then it all started to take a hold on my life... Having met the rest of the cast, most of whom appeared to be teachers, we were soon introduced to Kirsty’s co-conspirators in the production team and all got to know each other pretty well during the following three months of rehearsals, which were scheduled across three days each week! The producer, Olly Biswas, was more of a support to Kirsty in the early days, but came into his element

July 2010

Week after week we practised the songs, the dances and the dialogue, and quickly started to

establish new friendships with other members of the cast and crew. Of course, we’re talking here about the theatrical circuit and it will probably come as no surprise to anyone if I relate tales of constant backstage bitching, of off-stage dramas and on-stage tantrums. I’m sorry to disappoint, then, because there are no such stories to tell... I have never before come across a group of people who have so quickly gelled together to create a real sense of teamwork and genuine friendship. The truth is that we became like a family, and I can honestly say that there was not any single member of the cast or crew who did not fit in, or who I would not want to call a friend! When scenery needed building, and the set needed painting, everyone joined in to lend a hand. Some were quick to offer lifts to those without their own transport; others would bring generous supplies of homemade cakes and other edible treats; and we all learnt new things about ourselves and each other as we progressed along the Mamma Mia journey together. Working, and socialising, amongst a group of such talented people was a real joy, and I would be wrong to single out any of the cast members for their undoubted talents on the stage – each one contributed to the success of the production. But other talents emerged that I should like to mention ... the artistic skills of Kirsten Falcioni who not only appeared in the ensemble but also designed

the set (and cooked some delicious cookies and cakes, too); the patience of Tino Abrahamian when applying my make-up each night (when I really wasn’t keen to have it done); the photographic talent of Juanita du Toit who appeared, camera in hand, when you least expected her but who captured some really wonderful pictures; the infectious enthusiasm of Matt Aston, around whom nobody could feel dejected; I could go on... Of course there were some downs as well as ups, but they were pretty insignificant in the overall scheme of things. My biggest personal disappointment

perspective, and to have a record of memories that we can treasure for many years. Thanks to one and all. I shall now burst into tears and walk down the red carpet! And so the curtain has closed on the final performance. The lights have been extinguished. The sound of music and laughter has left the building (if only for the time being). It was quite a journey, but it was a journey I wouldn’t have missed for the world. To all my new friends, I give my thanks for making the whole experience such fun, and for providing me with so many happy memories.

was with the Chairman of the KLT Management Committee who, although he had attempted at one point to interfere in a Directorial decision (without proper knowledge of the situation and, though he might not have been aware, risked by his actions the very future of the show) he never said so much as a “hello” to the cast! But the overriding feelings backstage were positive. The cast and crew committed a great deal of their time and put in a lot of hard work over three months (or much longer, in some cases) to stage what was publicly acclaimed to be an excellent production. All are amateurs; all are volunteers; all deserve to be recognised and thanked in true Academy Award-winning “luvvie” style... so I should like to thank everyone who made it all possible, and who made it such fun at the same time – thanks to Kirsty, Olly, George and Helen; to Joel, Donna, Gina and Georgina; to Jackie, Valerie and Amber; to Aaron, Anne and Timi; Louie and Sean; to Maria, Robin, Robert and Riedwann; to Sameer and Peter; to Eliot, Lauren, Sharon, Stephanie, Reem and Elhusain; and to all the stars on stage – big thanks to Meryl, Tamara, Gregory, Mike, Sharon, Lisa, David, Jemma, Emma, Adel, Tim, Matt, Kristen, Lisa M, Larey, Ranjeet, Karen, Judith, Pauline, Tino and Juanita; and finally to Suzy Beidoun for making all the DVD arrangements, which means that the cast and crew will at last get an opportunity to see the whole show for ourselves from the audience

Would I do it again? Watch this space! For anyone who missed the show, and for those who saw it and want to live the memories, the DVD can be purchased via links from the theatre’s website www.theklt.com or via Kirsty through the show’s facebook page “MAMMA MIA! at The KLT”. 7

for the rest of us as opening night approached and he got more heavily involved backstage. Helen Newton, our singing coach, was a great help to those of us with limited vocal ability, and pushed those with greater talent to achieve new heights. George Dixon put us through our paces with some imaginative choreography, although I have to confess my fear of dance rehearsals in a studio with mirrors around the walls – it was too much like “Fame” for my liking!

EVERYTHING YOU LEARNED AT SCHOOL... BUT CAN YOU REMEMBER? What is origin of the term Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is an open wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (using short length radio waves) from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks (PANs) with high levels of security. Invented by telecoms vendor Ericsson in 1994, it was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables. It can connect several devices, overcoming problems of synchronization. Today Bluetooth is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group.

What is marketing myopia?

The term was first used by Theodore Levitt, an economist and editor of Harvard Business Review, who is also famous for the term 'globalization'. Management gurus define marketing myopia as a company's short-sighted, temporary or narrow-minded approach while marketing their product. Companies need to adapt themselves to the changing market. When a firm changes its marketing focus from customer to its product or the company itself, it is also called myopia. A classic example is Hindustan Motors, which failed to change with the economy.

Who is a downager?

What is a baker’s dozen and how did the phrase originate?

A downager is a person who acts younger than his or her age. There is a growing trend among women aged over 60 to live it up, hence the term dowager has been reinvented as downager. A study of independent, socially active Australian women found them working, studying, starting businesses and changing careers at the age of 60 and above. Downager reflects the “act younger, live younger” attitude of women who were earlier thought of as grandmotherly, retired individuals.

Baker’s dozen means 13, instead of 12. The tale behind its origin is that a medieval law specified the weight of bread loaves, and any baker who supplied less to a customer was in for dire punishment. So bakers would include a thirteenth loaf with each dozen just to be safe. It is said that during good harvests, bakers sold one excess loaf to middlemen. A baker’s dozen takes on importance in large families, where that little extra goes a long way.

Do All Girls Carry Compact Mirrors? Criss White

I

t’s almost a regulation that women bring compact mirrors on them. For lots of ‘useful’ purposes, it is a daily need to have a compact in your handbag. For guys, there are countless mysteries and enigmas where they are at odds with the female behaviors. While there are enough metrosexual males nowadays who are vain as well, you can still find a big chunk of the male gender that doesn’t know the difference between eye-liner or mascara, a dress and a shirt

blouse, or why women carry compact mirrors along. Because men can function outside their apartments daily, having only their money with them (or wallet if they use one), it is a puzzle for some, why women need to bring a handier version of the mirror they have in their home, in their purses. Females carry compact mirrors because they want to easily check their make-up. During the day, many women touch-up their make-up or re-style their hair lots of times. While bathrooms provide those huge mirrors to anyone, compact mirrors provide that handy mirror on demand. Just a fleeting peek and you will notice that spinach lodged between your teeth, or if your mascara smudged (best to use the waterproof one). After a snack, those pesky little food bits stuck in your pearlies can promptly be flossed away once they are spotted in the compact mirror. Even during the visit to the washroom or the bathroom, compact mirrors are still a tool

for women (again, there are those enormous mirrors already there). Ladies need compact mirrors to achieve that close-up look when putting on eye shadow or liner in the eyes, or using lipstick with a brush. Holding the compact mirror very near the face can improve the view, thus better chance for good application for women. Perhaps a better use for a compact mirror, as we all have observed in Hollywood scenes, is checking out the man behind you by using the compact mirror. Act like you’re looking at something in your visage with the mirror, and later slowly tilt it to your side, and voila! You can spot the man behind you on the sly. If the looks are okay, then maybe you can angle the compact back to yourself and preen before you go up to the guy (or the other way around). Compact mirrors can be found in various styles and even different sizes. They range from tiny to hefty, from drab to decorated. That’s the challenge!. What’s important is that portable mirrors give the emotion and perceived safety of having a ‘trusted’ friend who can show you (literally) anything not quite right with the picture. Not only small and easy to carry along, compact mirrors are also affordable and readily available. You can generally buy them at close to any shopping mall, pharmacies, beauty supply shops, and even some mega marts. While there are bigger puzzles on this earth, women needing compact mirrors is truly normal and typical. Females also go outside of their houses loaded with vanity kits and such stuff. Call it a security blanket or exclusively for looks, compact mirrors will remain as long as girls step out of their houses.

Graduation Announcements Planning Your Graduation Party Olivier De Meulder

B

e proud of your major accomplishment: Your graduation. Plan a great party in style! Graduating from high school or college is an extremely satisfying and exciting event in a person’s life, and well worth celebrating. The first step to getting the word of this achievement out in the air is to send out graduation announcements to your friends and family. These can be quite simple, or elaborate, as there are many different stylistic options that you may wish to consider. Some people put the same amount of planning and effort into this type of ceremony that they would into a wedding, while others may want their celebration to be low-key. The first step is to think about who you want to let know about your achievement. It can be helpful to sit down with your immediate family and put together a guest list of sorts that will receive your graduation announcements. You may want to divide these into two groups, including one that will be invited to the actual graduation ceremony, and another that will be invited to a graduation reception after the main event. The first group may require a more selective process of elimination, because many schools will have a limited amount of guest passes that you can give out, so that is something to take into consideration. The next step, after you have sent out these two sets of graduation announcements, with all of the important information that your guests need to know about the events, is to 12

plan the actual reception. This could be held at your house right after the ceremony, or it could be on a separate date in a more formal location. There is no right or wrong way to throw a graduation party, and since it’s your party, you should do what makes you feel most comfortable. This includes inviting a good mix of both your friends and family. Finally, after the whole event has come and gone, you will want to send out thank you cards, using the same theme and list that you used for your graduation announcements. You should thank people even for just attending your celebration, but if they gave you any gifts then this is especially true. It’s not something that everyone does, but many guests will donate some money to the recent graduate on a joyous occasion such as this, as they go off to start the next chapter of their lives. Everyone knows that college and the job hunt are expensive, so keep this in mind as you look forward to a bright new future.

In My Grandmother’s Garden Fatima Qader

I

n a garden full of mischievous kids playing around plants and trees making lots of noise and havoc and their favorite destination happened to be a “neem tree” they yearned to swing under the neem tree they often played games like “hide & seek”. More than any game or anything else their love for their grandmother was pure and boundless. It was beyond description and her love was equally sublime towards us it was bountiful “indeed in my grandmother I had lots of fun and memories that lasts forever”. The benevolent and pious person described above is my grandmother and the kids mentioned above are my cousins with whom I had great childhood days together. I feel blessed that Allah almighty bestowed us with such generous and caring grandparents with whom we had such a wonderful time and such a close bonding. They taught us a lot of practical and religious facts of life. They have given us our loving parents “may Allah give them a highest place in heaven”. AAMEEN Grand parents are blessed to every child and family. They are a boon to our life with their enrich experience of life, we see the world. They give enlightenment on every walk of life whether its religion culture or moral behavior.

“Wow! how come you forget our days when you scolded and beaten us and how granny used to save us” says an observing adamant Meherunnisa a daughter and mother this is a glance of a discussion between mother and daughter on scolding of their children and their old story it is true that grandparents become very upset when their grandchildren are scolded in front of them. It clearly signifies that due to their age and thinking they can’t bear the pain in comparison to a young parent. They always want happiness for their family and children.

“Where have those people gone? You cannot find any one like them, we have lost our precious gems”! says a lost nostalgic Muneebunnisa. There are many people like her who pine for their grandparents “I can’t wait to meet my granny I adore her, love her and I rush to meet her” says one enthusiastic adolescent Amatul.

As the time passes their children get settled down in life and the grand parents feel lot more lonely than ever. They often feel that they are “birds with empty nest” which actually means that their children have started earning and got married. So they have moved on. In a true sense they have learnt how to fly.

“Stop I can’t see my grandchildren beaten up by their parents in front of my eyes” says a half hearted Zebunnisa a grandmother.

With the dawn of a new era some families have kept their grandparents in “old age houses” which is so annoying and depressing. They

have deeply got involved in materialism and westernization, that they blindly follow them. Some of the scholars have rightly said “a family is complete with children and elders” if you take away your parents, then how is your family complete? Something really misses from the family. Islam has given its rightful position to everyone and grandparents are above all. The best example of a grandparent is our holy prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) and his grand children to follow. Both Imam Hasan (Radi Allahu Anhu) and Imam Hussain (Radi Allahu Anhu) were more than sons to the prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). Holy prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) used to prolong his prayer, as both children used to play on prophet’s shoulders. Indeed they are and will be eternal forever and we can always take the best example by following their footsteps. May Allah bestow us with righteous path of Truth.AAMEEN. 13

Exam Results and the Pool of Expectations and Stress! F

or some the seasons of results brings hope and happiness whereas for others it brings vicissitude which results in end of joy and brings in dismay and a sense of grief and when this grief becomes unbearable. for students then the death lay its icy hand on them. This happens because the internal as well as external pressure increases perpendicular to each other. With board and various competitive results springing up one after the other the cases of suicide also increases. The constant pressure to perform and beat the exams is what students are always laden with. The students who could not perform well in the exams and unable to qualify cannot bear this immense pain and their life. The students face this pressure not just before the exams but from the very moment they step for the exam. The parents constantly remind them that their children have to secure good percentage to be in the excellent category in the exams. They try to fulfill their unfulfilled dreams via their children. The parents compare their children performances and inability with other children and hence pressurize them to work on the same guidelines. Though they forget that, the understanding and comprehensive skill, the retention and recalling ability of different persons are different. For example, if one person understands the subject very fast in just one reading, retain it in the memory and can recall the contents very fast when required whereas another person understands or comprehends the subject while reading at it twice or thrice and then can retain and recall. The parents sometimes pressurize their children to study all through the day forgetting that however, minds also needs a rest to get rejuvenated and for this requires some sort of recreation. The students should identify their 14

peak concentrating hours to study and absorb to the maximum. If working hard and persistently is important for any student to taste the success then equally important is to be free from any sort of stress. With regular recreation whether it could be playing indoor outdoor games, watching television or soothing the mind by listening music for a while, doing meditation and exercise, it can also be a walk to a nearby park or a sweet conversation with family or friends, but it is necessary to cope with stress. Regular study hours and keeping some time save for

revision and recreation whenever mind feels lethargy can harness the energy in a better and productive way. Parents should not over pressurize their children by constantly pulling them for studies as it could have negative impact on them. They should not instill their expectations in such a way that if a child could not fulfill them he should not be laden with such a guilt that forces him to end his life as a result eclipse their life and nothing is precious than the life itself.

Education in Kuwait

A

s an expatriate who recently settled in Kuwait, one of the first thing I noticed during my travels around the country was the ample spread of schools, colleges and universities. For a small country like Kuwait, it was marvelous to find so many temples of wisdom with the student crowd dotted all around its vicinity in their pursuit of knowledge. For me, it was an assurance that Kuwait in the coming years will be safe in the hands of its young and educated populace who will be a positive catalyst for development, peace, and democracy. At a time when Middle East is portrayed as a volatile and violent region, countries like Kuwait are the beacons of hope for the whole wide Arab world. One of the prime factor, Kuwait has reached such enviable position is the sound educational strategy laid out by its rulers. With a limited population and ambitious plans, the option for Kuwait in the 21st century is to give importance to its human elements by providing proper preparation, orientation and care through continuous education. The two parts of the national educational strategy are: 16

“Education for life” and “Lifelong education” Arab states have one of the lowest adult literacy rate in the world with only about 60% of the total adult population being able to read and write. Moreover, there are considerable gender disparities in education with 51 literate women for every100 literate men. These statistics are a sharp contrast to figures in Kuwait where four-fifths of the population is literate, and the adult literacy rate is reaching 83%. General education which is entirely free for native Kuwaitis is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 14. The government also provides free school meals, books, uniforms, transportation, and medical attention as an added incentive. Not bad for a country which had just 17 schools in the mid forties, which is now close to 500,000 students in various schools across Kuwait constituting approximately 30 percent of the entire population. The impact that education has on the society is profound and the scope unimaginable. For the twenty first century, education defines what a civilized society is and is the fundamental pillar

George Thomas

for developing a knowledge worker. In Kuwait, the present positive scenario in education would not have been possible without a real commitment from various stake holders like the government, the educational institutions and the public. The future of tomorrow’s Kuwait is currently in schools, colleges and universities. Various schools in Kuwait, particularly the private schools have done a remarkable job of providing strong and high-quality education within the reach of every one. Through the remarkable achievements of their students, these schools have proved that education is not a commodity but a holistic process through which an individual progresses and letting them think loud and out of the box. This creative partnership between the schools and the students has tremendous potential benefiting the whole society. No wonder Kuwait has been ranked as one of the most peaceful countries to live in, in spite of being part of a very unpredictable region. For Kuwait, its choice of schools and the education they offer definitely creates a difference.

Can you remember – if you’re old enough – where you were on November 22nd 1963? I can. I was in hospital, about to have my appendix out. It was a Friday and the doctors and nurses’ animated discussions about what they were going to do at the weekend suddenly changed, as if blanketed by a dark, grey cloud, when news broke that the President of the United States of America had been shot dead. On September 11th, 2001, I was watching live news feeds on the Internet in my laboratory office, as almost three thousand people died when aircraft were flown into two gigantic Manhattan skyscrapers. My colleagues and I sat, silent and appalled, glued to the computer screens. The fairytale wedding of Diana Spencer to Charles, eldest son of the Queen and heir to the throne of England was watched by three quarters of a billion people worldwide, that’s over ten per cent of the total population of the planet. Born into an old, wealthy, aristocratic family in 1961, Spencer royal connections dating back to illegitimate sons sired by Charles II, she was, said some, the perfect brood mare to continue one of the oldest monarchies in the world. Despite - perhaps because of - her relatively poor scholarship – she failed her O levels twice – she became both the darling of the British people and the nemesis of the Royal family into which she had been so unceremoniously thrust. Millions of words have been written about why the marriage to the heir to the English throne failed – Diana, although possessing an endearing early shyness, was no shrinking violet when it came to manipulating the media – and after her divorce her charitable work and engaging presence became etched on the consciousness not only of a nation, but of the world. Emotionally fragile and deeply vulnerable, a bulimic, she brought out the fiercest protective instincts in a British society that secretly despised the ‘toffs’ for their arrogance, wealth, privilege and apparent untouchability. She became the ‘people’s Princess’, tirelessly campaigning for the dispossessed, marginalised and disadvantaged, a

Rose Remembered John MacArthur woman whose support for individual organisations has been described as 'incalculable'.She auctioned her most beautiful dresses in order to help cancer sufferers with the proceeds, but, most particularly, she helped to dispel myths about AIDS – touching and hugging them when everyone else was afraid of contamination and refused to go near them. Many of the other royals when on walkabouts wore gloves. Diana did not. Mohamed Al-Fayed was the owner of the most prestigious department store in London, its unmistakable green bags a must for tourists who might often only be able to afford small items. His eldest son, Dodi, was a film producer – he produced “Chariots of Fire” in 1981 – and had been romantically linked with Diana for some time. In the early hours of August 31st, 1997 he and Diana, their black Mercedes limousine chased remorselessly by paparazzi through the underpasses of the Paris Périphérique, were fatally injured. As dawn broke, the news travelled like wildfire around the world. I was staying with friends in England as we awoke to the early morning news reports. Strangely, not one of us at the time thought that it was nothing more than a dreadful road accident, an opinion, it seemed, shared by quite a number of others. Everyone around the breakfast table that morning had their own conspiracy theory. Diana was loose cannon in the Royal Family, so they had her murdered. The driver was drunk. Someone took a pot-shot at the car’s tyres, causing it to smash into a wall. Why can nobody find the white Fiat Uno which scratched the Mercedes that night? Had the electronics of the Mercedes been tampered with? The list went on and on and on. Perhaps the British royal family were not prepared to accept the possibility that Diana might at some future date have a child with Dodi who would be of Arab extraction. Mohamed Al-Fayed made repeated allegations that their deaths were not accidental but were the result of a wide-ranging conspiracy involving the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip and MI5. No material evidence of conspiracy was ever uncovered, nothing was ever proved and to this day, the deaths of those three unfortunates on that summer night

in Paris were written up as a tragic accident but nothing more. I rather suspect, myself, that there are few secrets in hearts yet to be revealed one day. There was an extraordinary, almost astonishing outpouring of collective grief from the British public. Bereavement counsellors said at the time that many behaved as if they had lost members of their own family. Most normal activity ceased on the Saturday morning of the funeral. Shops, banks and entertainment venues stayed shut, sports stadiums laid empty, with fixtures cancelled, and silent tributes were paid across the nation. Never had it been so still in London. Aircraft were only allowed to overfly the city at great height as the world cried over “England’s Rose”

Versace, George Michael, Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg.Luciano Pavarotti, the greatest tenor in the world attended, having been asked whether he wanted to sing. He declined as he felt unable to trust his emotions, his pain was so great. That honour fell to Elton John, who with Bernie Taupin overnight rewrote “Candle in the Wind”, transforming it into “Goodbye, English Rose”. Flowers thrown by well-wishers garlanded the hearse as it slowly and sorrowfully bore the coffin to its last resting place, an island on a lake in her childhood home. Farewell, Diana, and much remembered. As the old Scottish anthem says “we shall not see your like again”.

Two and a half billion people, over forty percent of the Earth’s population watched the televised funeral at noon on September 6th, 1997. I can remember thinking as I watched it at the time that the eight Welsh guardsmen carrying the coffin from the 1904 gun carriage in to Westminster Abbey that day must have been chosen both for their height equivalence and enormous strength, since the great, lead-lined coffin carrying the small, frail body holding rosary beads given to her by Mother Teresa, seemed to weigh heavily on their shoulders. Invited guests at the venerable coronation church included Hillary Clinton, H e n r y Kissinger, I m r a n Khan, Karl Lagerfeld, Sting, Donatella and Santo 19

FOOD FOR BEAUTY

ou’ve heard it said that if it goes in your body, you wear it. Well, here’s an addendum. If it goes on your body, you can wear it, too. You’ll have more radiant, firmer skin while saving a ton of money. You see, you’re using the core ingredients in some of the priciest, most effective skincare products around. The difference is that you’re using the product in its original form without the chemicals that need to be infused to give the product a shelf life. CRANBERRIES Make a cranberry cleanser. The juice is a very gentle exfoliant and acne-fighter. Crush a handful of raw cranberries in the blender. Strain to remove pulp. Soak gauze pads in the juice and place them on your face, avoiding the eye area. Let soak in for about ten minutes, and then rinse with warm water.

BANANAS

GRAPEFRUIT

Mash a banana with one egg yolk plus a teaspoon of almond extract. Apply to face and leave on until dry. Remove with cool chamomile tea to moisturize and refresh.

Grapefruit Body Scrub Dip half a grapefruit in sugar and gently scrub over body. Shower or bathe off. Don’t use this body scrub on just-shaved or sensitive areas.

CHAMOMILE TEA Use this chamomile steam treatment to clean pores and get rid of blackheads. Steep three tea bags in boiling water for at least five minutes. Close your eyes and hold your face close to the bowl. Hold a towel over your head so the steam will go right into your face, not into the air. Follow up by cleansing in a circular motion with a coarse washcloth. Rinse and moisturize.

CHERRIES Cherries are loaded with malic acid, which speeds up cell renewal while getting rid of dead skin cells. Mix two tablespoons cherry juice with a tablespoon of dry oatmeal. Smooth over face for five minutes, then rinse off. Mix a tablespoon of cherry juice concentrate with a tablespoon of sea salt. Massage over damp skin. Rinse, then moisturize. This is a great “glow” treatment for the entire body. 22

AVOCADOS Mash a ripe avocado and gently massage on undereye puffiness and dark circles. While sitting, place a cold damp washcloth over closed eyes for about fifteen minutes. Rinse off by pressing off with the cloth. The oil in the avocado is a rich moisturizer, while the cold cloth helps de-puff. Mash a half-ripe avocado with a teaspoon of olive oil. Massage into cuticles. Leave on for fifteen minutes. Rinse.

SUN STROKE Dr. Nazia Nausheen

Temperatures are soaring high..Summer is in full swing. 51 degrees in the morning!! Unbelievable!! In the middle of this hot and unpredictable summer, heat stroke is a serious concern. With all the information about use of sun screen, drinking lots of water and staying indoors between 12 to 4 pm I am sure that everybody is well aware about these precautionary measures. But what often gets missed is to deal with SUN STROKE OR SUN POISONING. So I am going to tell you about the actual sun stroke what does that mean ,how to recognize it and what to do when it happens. What is SUN STROKE?

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS OF SUN STROKE

Due to excessive exposure to sun heat the heat regulating system in the body can not cope with it and is unable to cool down properly. As a result body temperatures climb up to uncontrollable levels. It is a medical emergency and requires immediate medical attention.

The ideal way to recognize signs and symptoms we need to understand how does our body work. When body becomes overheated it cools off itself by producing more perspiration than normal. But when the body is no longer able to produce that extra perspiration needed to draw the heat from inside the body, the temperature rises. With the rise in temperature comes decrease in blood pressure causing a person to feel dizzy. Heart beats faster to supply more oxygen. Blood vessels dilate to reduce the temperature resulting in redder skin. So we can list the signs and symptoms as: • It can cause a person to stop sweating. • To have a red hot skin • To have a high temperature (above 104 degrees). • The person might become confused and disoriented, or even lose consciousness. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUN STROKE AND FEVER Some of the similarities between sun stroke and fever include high temperature and

the feeling of being cold in spite of the high temperature. But the history of some infection or extra exposure to the sun always helps to differentiate between the two. Anyways a temperature above 40 is a threatening situation and should always be taken seriously . TREATMENT The treatment of sun stroke is to lower the body temperature immediately. • Get the person immediately out of the sun and into a cool place. • Urge the person to lie down and rest. • Offer water and fluids. • Sponge off with cool water. But he should never be wrapped in cool clothes or towels as it will keep the heat inside the body. • If the person has lost consciousness then urgent medical attention is required.

This is a public education column and is not intended to be diagnostic or therapeutic. If you have questions regarding health, email them to dr.nazia@citypageskuwait.com. Responses will be published in subsequent issues.

INTERVIEW

Nikki Yanofsky Sixteen-Year-Old Musical Prodigy from Canada Jameel Arif

N

ikki Yanofsky was cast into the global spotlight when, with an audience of many millions, she performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, as well as at the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Winter Games. Nikki had been selected to sing “I Believe,” which was the chosen anthem of Canada’s Broadcast Consortium. This song quickly became a Number One hit on iTunes Canada and on the Billboard Canada Top 100 charts and, being certified quadruple-platinum, had the highest first-week sales of any Canadian artist in SoundScan history. In the same week, Nikki’s earlier release of “Ella… of Thee I Swing” (a live CD/DVD package recorded in Montreal) went back to the top of the iTunes Canada Jazz Albums Chart and her single “I Got Rhythm” went to the top of the iTunes Canada Jazz Songs Chart. This was the first time since the inception of digital downloading that an artist has held these Number One positions concurrently. Since her debut at the 2006 Montreal International Jazz Festival, where she won the hearts of the 100,000+ audience, this (now) 16-year-old musical prodigy has never looked back. She was the youngest ever singer on a Verve Records release when she recorded “Airmail Special” for the Ella Fitzgerald tribute album “We All Love Ella: Celebrating the First Lady of Song” alongside such musical luminaries as Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, Diana Krall and Natalie Cole. She has also recorded the swing-era classic “Stompin’ at the Savoy” with Grammy Award-winning artists Herbie Hancock and Will.i.am for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s audio book “On the Shoulders of Giants”. In the realm of popular music, Nikki was asked to 24

record “Gotta Go My Own Way” for Disney’s smash hit “High School Musical 2”. The song was included in French and English on the Canadian release of the soundtrack, and in the bonus features of the worldwide DVD release. Nikki has also starred with renowned hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean on episodes of PBS' current version of “The Electric Company” and has been broadcast internationally on PBS’s youth talent showcase “From the Top”. The 2008 release of “Ella… of Thee I Swing” received much critical acclaim, and earned Nikki two Juno nominations including New Artist of the Year and Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. (The Juno awards are presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and recognised as Canada’s primary national music honours). Nikki has used her budding fame to help the underprivileged, becoming an ambassador for the Montreal Children’s Hospital, The Children's Wish Foundation and MusiCounts. Nikki has also recently joined her fellow Canadian artists in recording K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag” for Young Artists for Haiti. Being sold on iTunes as a single and video, the proceeds will directly impact the lives of children, families and communities in Haiti through the relief and rebuilding efforts of Free the Children, War Child Canada and World Vision Canada. The local, national and international charity events that Nikki has been involved with to date have raised well over $10 million. Already a veteran of the touring circuit, Nikki has played to sell-out crowds at jazz festivals in Montreal, Toronto, Sapporo and Montego Bay; played Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and Avery Fischer Hall with renowned composer and conductor, Marvin Hamlisch; and has

performed before full houses at Dizzy's in New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center, the famed Catalina's Jazz Club in Los Angeles and even Tokyo’s historic Kabuki-za. Nikki’s first studio album “Nikki” has recently been released by Decca Records. Produced by 15-time Grammy Award-winning producer Phil Ramone, it features new arrangements of classic jazz songs as well as some of Nikki’s first original music. It includes collaborations with fellow Canadian Ron Sexsmith and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jesse Harris as well as a song written for Nikki by Feist. Nikki has a busy summer ahead of her, with a diary full of international tour dates. Canadian, US, UK, Japanese and European tours are all scheduled, and include her fifth straight appearance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. CityPages was delighted when Nikki took some valuable time out, before embarking on her travels, to give us an exclusive interview...

NIKKI YANOFSKY

July 2010

July 2010

You are only 16 - How and when did you start singing?

What was it like to have your song chosen for the Winter Olympics?

I have always been around music and I have always loved it, so I started singing with my dad's band for charities and stuff, and it really all started from there.

Actually, it was me that was chosen!! The song “I Believe” was written by Alan Frew and Stephan Moccio, and they then chose me to perform their song. It was definitely a great honour for me!

What do you consider have been your greatest achievements so far?

Performing at the Olympics, performing at Carnegie Hall (and lots of other cool venues as well!) rate high on my list, but also performing with Wyclef Jean, Justin Beiber, Drake, K'naan, and lots of other great people/performers! It actually seems quite surreal when I recall all the great things I’ve experienced! How would you describe your music?

My music is pretty much "eclectic", but my first love is undoubtedly jazz.

Tell us about your debut album. When will it be released?

Well, actually it’s already been released in the States, Canada and Japan, and it's due for release in November in the UK! It's very diverse and you really get to know me through the music. Who are you biggest inspirations?

Up to now my biggest inspirations have been Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and the Beatles. Who influenced you to become a singer?

All the artists I’ve already mentioned have influenced me to want to pursue this but I guess the driving motivator has been myself! I've always had a strong sense of destiny, and I've never doubted that this is what I always wanted to do with my life. Aside from your music interests, what else do you do?

Besides music I go to school, hang out with my friends and write. I particularly love writing poetry. What does your typical day look like?

My days are rarely the same, so I guess a “typical” day for me is busy and extremely exciting!

Do you have a favourite movie?

My favourite movie of all time has to be Annie Hall. It's amazing! ...and your favourite food?

My favourite food is chicken pot pie. That’s random, I know, but it's like comfort food... mmmm What are your future plans?

My future plans are to continue to sing and to grow myself as both an artist and a person in all possible ways, What are you studying?

I'm not studying anything in particular. I'm still in high school, so I need just to study all the subjects that are obligatory. Do you have any hobbies, besides music?

Am I allowed to say “more music”? I guess not... but I also ski and even used to be a competitive skier when I was younger. Who writes your music?

Sometimes it’s just me writing alone, but most of the time I co-write my music with various artists. Most of the material on my new album was written by me, Jesse Harris and Ron Sexsmith. I love it when the three of us write together. Do you have a message for your fans in Kuwait?

Please keep listening and spreading the word (or I guess, in this case, the music!!) I really do appreciate it. And finally, do you have a message for CityPages?

Thank you so much for your support, and have a great day!

INTERVIEW

MINNA PARIKKA On a Special Mission

I

t’s a strange paradox that the world of women’s shoe design is dominated by men, but there’s at least one woman who isn’t prepared to live in a world like that, and she’s on a mission to change it. A lifelong shoe-lover herself, Minna Parikka creates designs that are not only breathtakingly beautiful but also wonderfully wearable. Made of only the finest materials and with unparalleled attention to detail, Minna’s shoes have helped countless women build their own style from the ground up. Aesthetically, Minna’s collections combine elements of sensuality, playfulness and contemporary design. Functionally, they allow women from all walks of life to feel comfortable and empowered, whether they’re stepping into the boardroom or on to home territory. Although her main focus and first love will always be footwear, Minna plans to build a whole fun, flirty and feminine universe around her shoes. Her premiere knitwear and leather glove For those who do not know you, please introduce yourself. Sure, I’m Minna, a shoe designer from Finland who is running my own brand of shoes, leather accessories and knitwear. I started my company 5 years ago at the age of 25. I enjoy all sorts of adventures that owning a company brings - from meeting new people and travelling around the world, to riding my retro motorbike and taking a hot air balloon ride. Your name is associated with shoe designing, but why did you decide to design shoes? Becoming a shoe designer had been my teenage dream. When I was 15-years-old my sister wrote an article about shoe designer Andrea Pfister, and it was like I had been struck by a bolt of lightning when I realized that I could just think about shoes all day long as a profession. Do you design anything other than shoes? Yes, I also design gloves, bags and knitwear. I am also designing a leather clothing line for a Finnish manufacturer “Friitala”. What materials do you use for your shoes? My shoes are all made of leather; leather soles, uppers and linings. For my next Autumn/Winter 2010 collection, my favorite material is reptile embossed high shine leathers in green, red 28

collections were launched in 2009, and she’ll be adding silk scarves to the mix in autumn 2010. Minna’s work has been featured in several publications, in her native Finland and abroad, including Elle, Vogue, Glamour and Cosmopolitan. Now, through this exclusive interview with CityPages, she will feature here in Kuwait, too ...

and denim. Sometimes for the shoes I use satin to create a lingering/corset feel for the design.

Where is your flag-ship store, and when did it open?

A lot of care goes into how your shoes are made…can you share with us some of the details?

I opened my own boutique 2 years ago in my home town, Helsinki in Finland.

The core of my designs is to pay attention to the detail. I like classical shapes that follow the feminine body curves but with detail, colour and material, the classical shapes take a totally new aspect. The shoes are made in Spain where they have decades of experience in finishing fine details and crafting excellent women's shoes. What inspires your designing process? Shoes are the most important things in my collection. I have studied to be a shoe designer and it is my passion and first love in fashion. The whole style is built from the ground up. In my collections there is always a combination of naughty and nice. I don’t like aggressive shoes that men design. I like the softness of femininity and to be able to feel like a woman without screaming out my sexuality. I love it when things look innocent but they have features of strength. What is the most important factor in your mind when you design shoes? I want my designs to be wearable. I try to select lasts very carefully to give more comfort for the wearer. There is nothing more unattractive than beautiful women who are in agony because of their shoes. What kind of women wear Minna Parikka shoes? Women who are active, fun, flirty and fierce. Where and when did the Minna Parikka brand come into existence? I started my company in 2005, and my first collection was launched for the Autumn/Winter season in 2006.

We heard that you have your own postage stamp? How did that happen? One of my shoe styles called “Starlet” was made into a postage stamp here in Helsinki. It was so exciting, because usually someone needs to be dead to be celebrated on their own stamp. Do you have any famous customers? British singer Paloma Faith is a great example - she says that we are a perfect match. Other celebrity

customers include the burlesque starlet Dita von Teese, Beth Ditto (the singer from Gossip) and Maja Ivarson (the singer from The Sounds). Where are your shoes available? My designs are available in 12 different countries: across Europe, China, Malaysia, Saudi-Arabia and Japan. And they can be purchased directly from our web boutique www.minnaparikkashop.com. In fact, we handle insured deliveries through our web boutique, which makes it a safe way for customers in Kuwait to acquire our shoes without having to travel. Are you planning for any future expansion? I am planning to be distributed in more countries, hopefully soon also in Kuwait. We are going through a boost for international visibility. I am also planning to move to London in November to work on the British market. Will you extend your collections to include men’s shoes? Before I started my own brand I used to design men's shoes so I could do it, but I prefer my ladies. My style is very feminine and I like to play with different high heels and the curves of the lasts that only women's shoes have. What do you like most about being a designer? Having my own company has been a great growing experience. I am totally free to create the products that I have always dreamed of. Do you have a message for your fans in Kuwait? People should not take their style too seriously. I want to inspire people to be playful and have fun with their dressing up, and the best way to do it is with accessories! 29

"

We've become a bit of a destination, which I didn't expect," says Sarwar Inayat, taking a moment to relax towards the end of a busy day. "One couple came over from the south side deliberately, bypassing several other cafés, just to spend time here." He's talking about Sketch, the café-bookshop he set up from scratch 18 months ago. Located in the basement of Galleria 2000 mall at Salmiya, it's a place with a lot of competition, but it's doing well despite that. It's popular within the local community and has many regular customers. So what makes a business like this a success? Let’s discover this from the owner himself who was kind enough to spare time out of his busy schedule for an exclusive talk with CityPages. What type of experience do your customers walk away with? Our customers come here to get relaxed and enjoy their favorite cup of coffee. So, when they leave they are really satisfied and ready to start again. What was the idea behind Sketch? Well, I am an Architect by profession. All my life I have been busy designing 5 star hotels, café’s , restaurants apart from other interesting places. But when my son showed his interest in FMCG and further completed his degree from Switzerland, It was time for the fusion to happen. So, Sketch basically is a fusion of my architectural experience and my son’s FMCG interest.

based. But ours is totally vegetarian. Sketch is unlike any restaurant I’ve ever visited. What makes the atmosphere so fun? The location is very calm, the decoration, color scheming and the books all add up to the unique atmosphere you can experience at Sketch. What is your specialty? What is in demand? Our Clientele is young & mostly students, designers & young businessmen. In my opinion we are popular for our flexible menu, cozy ambience & group bookings. That is why we are always booked for Karaoke nights or conferences & Birthday parties. When is the place mostly occupied? Everyday is the same. Its busy most of the time as we have regular customers who like to come and spend their time and get relaxed.

avail a discount & special invitation on theme nights at Sketch Café-Lounge. We are planning to add at least 2 new locations by next year. Where does the name Sketch come from? If you start anything, you have to sketch it before and Sketch is a name of system, which is started, and it has to go long to build a building. Who are your customers? Mostly our customers are couples and ladies and you can rarely find male alone. In addition, they belong to all nationalities, locals and expats as well. What type of treatment your customers usually get?

We have recently launched LOW CARB & Healthy menu which will be continued & New Organic menu items will be added soon. We plan to open one more branch by the end of this year. We are also issuing a Privilege card, with which our guests can

All of our customers get a special treatment from us. You cannot find class distinction in Sketch. For us every customer is VIP and should be treated in this way. That is the reason whosoever come one time is our permanent customer.

When did Sketch open for public? Around 18 months ago. What has worked? What hasn’t? Alhamdulillah, Everything went as we planned. Although we modify as and when required. What is YOUR favorite dish at Sketch? Vegetable LASAGNIA. Its really delicious. Usually, you find LASAGNIA everywhere which is meat 31

INTERVIEW

Samar's Art

The Bright Future of Fashion in Kuwait

I

magine a black “shemagh” with an image of the Kuwait Towers printed on the back, or “ugg” boots with handpainted flowers and butterflies; Imagine a fusion of vibrant colours; Imagine a fashion revolution, in which western colours and designs are combined with Arabic culture and tradition; Imagine a boutique in which the collections are all hand-made. But you need to curtail your imagination no longer as, situated next to the Amiri Hospital in Sharq, at Karizma House #7, Samar’s Art boutique focuses on merging traditional

How did you start your career? Since my childhood I had been interested in arts, and especially in fashion, so I had wanted to pursue my degree in fashion. However, I was afraid that my parents would not allow me to do that, so I studied and graduated with a degree in Advertising & Finance from The New School of Art in Boston, USA, as this field was quite close to my preferred area of study. When I came back to Kuwait after completing my degree, my mother had opened a shop in the Zahra Complex. For my own interest and stimulation, I started helping her in her shop by doing little things like patch works. Then in the summer of 2008 I went to the Lebanon where some incidents happened in such a way that I decided to do something more creative in this field. And so I started my journey with a scarf. How have the public responded to your work? The response has been tremendous. I use shocking, vibrant colours in my designs, which is not very common in Kuwait. In the early days when couples visited the shop, some husbands were not very happy with these types of colour combinations 32

and conventional clothing with artistic flair and creativity. Samar Al-Mutawa, the founder of Samar’s Art, is a graduate of Suffolk University and New England School of Art and Design in Boston with a BSc in Advertising and Fine Arts. As an artist, she focused mainly on portrait work using pastels, but her enthusiasm and flair for fashion led to the design of her own fashion wear and the launch of her own retail outlet. Samar kindly took time out from her busy family and business schedule to talk to us at CityPages...

because they were not used to them. However, with the passage of time, they have adjusted to this and now they are more than happy to shop here with their wives. To illustrate how my customers are keen to make purchases, I can reveal that I don’t have a K-Net machine in my shop which means that cardholders are unable to buy things instantly. Instead they have to go to the other side of the road to withdraw some cash, or their drivers come to collect the delivery later. Such an attitude shows that they really appreciate my designs. How do you define your clothes? ”Funky fashion with a twist”. My clothes are mostly made for the youth market, and I produce just two pieces per design as I believe that my customers do not want to see other people wearing the same piece that they are wearing themselves. Do you offer customization? For the time being no, but you are the first to know that within one month I will launch my Couture line, which will offer party dresses and customization as well.

Do you use any kind of special fabric material? Since I turn a piece of fabric into a unique design, I believe that it’s my creations that make the fabric special. I mostly purchase fabric locally but also source directly from the Lebanon. I started my journey with scarves but now I have many other designs which include everyday wear, sandals, purses, accessories etc…. How do you announce your collection? My collections are launched through local exhibitions, and I also use facebook and SMS messaging to notify all previous customers. Who are your customers? The majority of my customers are Kuwaitis, but a growing number are from other Gulf countries like Qatar, Dubai, and Bahrain……..women from each of these countries have travelled all the way to Kuwait to buy traditional dresses from here. GCC people like Kuwaiti style! Many times, when I have been walking in the streets of these countries, people have asked me from where I have bought my dresses, and I am always pleased to tell them

July 2010

that it is a simple Kuwaiti style. How did you start your business? When I was studying in high school I told my mother that I wanted to open my “Mashghal” but I did not have any idea how, where, or even why! My mom used to frighten me that people open these shops but that they rarely work. After I was married I came back in Kuwait and enjoyed married life and motherhood. It wasn’t until after the birth of our fourth child that I decided to start a professional life. In summer 2008 I went to an exhibition in the Lebanon where I saw “Ashmak”. There were three or four flowers on it, and I thought that I could make them easily. My husband went to a coffee shop, and I went exploring to see the wide variety of “Ashmak”. I found a lot of variety there and brought home a good selection . So we started working at home by hand, although we made many mistakes in that way. Now we have tailors’ machines and all the required equipment. My husband and brother ask me to read about other fashion designers, but of course I want others to read about me! Who is your favourite designer? I like the work of Minesh Arrora. I like his design. At the same time, however, I can only imagine what it must be like to work in a country like India where quality fabric is more readily available than in Kuwait. Is your husband supportive? Yes, I used to tell him all the details, to which he listened with great patience. As a result, now he goes to galleries himself to find new things for me. What are your sources of inspiration? Music, malls, and colours. When I see people walking I like to observe their style and I try to

Samar Al-Mutawa imagine what else could be created from what they are wearing. How do you schedule your work? I always like to work ahead of my schedule. For example, my next year’s collection is prepared already. Would you like to send a message to CityPages? You people are doing fabulous job and I would not be wrong if I said that, after a long time, the magazine readers are now able to find a quality magazine. “Keep it up CityPages!”. _____________________________________ Samar’s Art boutique is situated next to the Amiri Hospital in Sharq, at Karizma House #7, Bin Mesbah Street, Sharq, Kuwait. INTERVIEW

The Sizzling Brazillian Model in Town When waiting to meet someone who, you are told, is a qualified mechanical engineer, you probably wouldn’t be expecting your encounter to be with a tall and very beautiful South American model. But that’s exactly what happened to me when I arranged to meet Luana Cariello for an exclusive CityPages interview...

Please introduce readers…

yourself

to

our

I am from Brazil and my name is Luana. My grandparents were from Italy, Spain and Russia, so you could say that I am truly international. So how many languages do you speak? I can speak in four languages - Portuguese, English, Italian and Spanish. Tell us about your education - what did you study? I am actually a Mechanical Engineer, but I have taken several courses in modelling. How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? Yes, I am very friendly and I communicate very easily… but no, I’m afraid I am not very patient. Do you have a diet plan? I eat everything and then I go to the gym. In fact, I go to the gym four times a week. What are your likes and dislikes?

What is your availability for modelling work?

I shall go for “friendly”,” honest” and “crazy”.

I am a full-time model, so I depend on the work that is available at any given time. And of course I cannot expect the work will always come to me in Kuwait, which means that I sometimes travel to places like Beirut and Dubai for modelling assignments.

Well, because of my origins, it’s difficult for people to guess where I am from. I can be mistaken for Asian, Mediterranean, Spanish...

Do you have any tips and advice for aspiring models just starting out? Follow your dreams! Don’t stop!! Would you like to share any of your ambitions? As I said earlier, I like cinema … so I would love to appear in films one day. Which is your single most favourite magazine? VOGUE If you could change just one thing about yourself, what would you choose? My shoe size! I would definitely like to reduce my shoe size.

What’s unique about you?

Which ONE super-power would you choose to have? I guess I’d like to have the ability to know what other people are thinking. What is your favourite part of your body? My Legs! Do you have any beauty/skincare tips or tricks to help you to look fresh and rested for early morning photo shoots? I use a lot of products for my skin and hair ... rosewater, tonics, creams, lotions, tons of different products, actually. Had you always wanted to be a model, or was it a “chance” career opportunity?

I like cinema and movie direction, and before I came to Kuwait I was studying direction in Rio de Janeiro.

In just three words, how would you describe yourself as a model?

But I don’t like routine and office work – I understand that some people like such structure in their working life, but I don’t think I would be able to work in an office doing the same routine job day after day!

And in another three words, how would you describe yourself as a human being?

I had always wanted to a model. In fact, from a very young age, I used to participate in modelling events. My mom did not encourage me, though, as she wanted me to complete my studies. But from the age of 15, I started modelling and then during my college I took a 3 year break. I graduated as a Mechanical Engineer and joined an Oil and Gas company in Brazil, but did not like it.

Again, it’s too limiting to use just three words ... but

Having moved to Rio de Janeiro to learn the art

34

Three words are not enough ... but I shall say ”spontaneous”, “versatile” and “hot”.

July 2010

of cinema and direction, I met my future husband whilst he was on vacation there and, after we married, I moved to Kuwait - that was around one and a half years ago. What do you enjoy most about your work? I like that it’s varied and unpredictable. Do you have a favourite photographer, and a favourite designer? For my favourite photographer I would like to mention Naeem Al-Rahman, and for designers I like Elie Saab, Alexandre Herchcovitch (for his Bikini line) and Alexander McQueen (who sadly died only recently). Finally, do you have a message for CityPages? Sure, it’s a great magazine. I love reading it and I am always waiting to get my hands on the next issue. Great job!

B

ased in Pittsburgh, PA, Conflict Kitchen is a project by John Peña, Jon Rubin, and Dawn Weleski and is funded by the Sprout Fund, Waffle Shop, and the Center for the Arts in Society. Conflict Kitchen is a take-out restaurant that only serves cuisine from countries that the United States is in conflict with. The food is served out of a take-out style storefront, which will rotate identities every 4 months to highlight another country. Each Conflict Kitchen concept restaurant will be complemented by events, performances, and discussion about the the culture, politics, and issues at stake with each county. The first country to be kitchenized is Iran. Kubideh Kitchen is an Iranian take-out restaurant that serves kubideh in freshly baked barbari bread. The sandwich is packaged in a custom-designed wrapper that includes interviews with Iranians, both in Pittsburgh and Iran, on subjects ranging from Iranian food and poetry to the current political turmoil. Food that’s delicious and informative – can’t get better than that! CityPages talks directly with Dawn Weleski to answer some interesting questions for our readers... 42

What is the idea behind Conflict Kitchen? Utilizing the context of a take-out restaurant, Conflict Kitchen uses food, wrapped in opinions and sentiments, to open the door to a discussion about cultures with which the U.S. is in conflict. The wrapper is culled from interviews that we conducted with many different Iranians in both Iran and Pittsburgh. It provides multiple, and often contrasting, opinions and perspectives about a variety of cultural and political topics. Conflict Kitchen initiates a conversational, and often first person account, of the everyday life of people who are often presented in simplified and polarizing nightly news clips. Our food, subtly embedded with the history of a culture, is the first, sensorial invitation for engagement with the public. The food, in addition to the wrapper and our programming, help to break through the mental boundaries that many people have about places like Iran, and create a platform for a more nuanced discussion of culture and politics. What objectives do you wish to achieve from this project? Conflict Kitchen initiates a discussion about countries that many people are not familiar with outside of the relatively narrow lens of the mainstream media. In addition to adding some more culinary diversity to the city, the project hopes to create a more empathic discussion about the places and cultures that we are

sometimes antagonistic to as a nation.

presentation and misrepresentation.

community in Pittsburgh.

Over the course of a year, the takeout food and ephemera will engage hungry Pittsburghers with countries that seem both geographically and psychologically distant and stimulate conversation across cultures on a personal level. We are looking to connect people to people, everyday Pittsburghers to other everyday world citizens. We are interested to highlighting the cultural diversity of the city by locating these communities.

Additional events will include: traditional Persian instrumentalists very popular Persian music videos and pop music; film screenings from Iranian directors; a forum and discussion on blogging and social media in Iran, and it's role in the Green Movement; and a culminating event in collaboration with local organizations on Pittsburgh's first-ever Persian Cultural Festival.

Almost every Iranian in Pittsburgh who has stopped by is sad to know that we'll be going out of business soon to serve cuisine from another country. That said, almost everyone that we've encountered is excited that we'll be serving Iranian food for the next three months and is quick to suggest our next iteration, whether it be Afghanistan, North Korea, or Venezuela.

We aren't looking to promote any message, necessarily, or promote change. We're merely looking to start a conversation, one that might be a little more personal, one that is more of an exchange, whether it be around the politics, the culture, or daily life. It is easy to forget that behind all of the governmental conflicts there are people and a culture. When this personal connection is lost things become dangerous. How long will each country be in focus? We will focus on each country for about four months. Which other countries are on your list? Most likely, we will follow up Kubideh Kitchen with Afghan cuisine, followed by North Korea, and then perhaps Venezuela. Really, the take-out restaurant could go on for years, with the conflicts the U.S. is currently involved in. When did you start the project and when is the next country be presented? Kubideh Kitchen first opened in May 2010. The Afghan iteration will open October 2010. Are you present during the discussions that take place at the restaurant? Yes, we are all present during the large public events, as well as during most times that the take out restaurant is open. To some extent, this dialogue that happens between the artists and the community, as well as among the public, becomes the form of the art work. What special events take place at the restaurant? There will be programming for each Conflict Kitchen iteration, hosted at the Waffle Shop. We just hosted a meal with Pittsburgh and Tehran via live video conferencing (Skype) on Sat., June 5. We invited people to join us for a virtual dinner party with Tehran. A menu was planned with a gallery owner in Tehran that reflected a breadth of traditional Iranian food. Folks in Tehran were invited to join in on the meal that happened concurrently here in Pittsburgh at the Waffle Shop. The event was two hours long and between 30-40 people attended on each end. The conversation ranged from food, to dating, to politics. Our next event will be another live video feed with Tehran in the form of a YouTube video essay, curated by Jon Rubin in Pittsburgh and Sohrab Kashani in Tehran, that highlights uploaded videos by residents of both cities, and will take place Saturday, July 10 at 11.30a. The videos will alternate between Pittsburgh and Tehran, comparing and contrasting the culture of each city. Connected through live video conferencing, the attendees of the event in both cities will then engage in discussion about the cultural and societal morays presented in the videos and YouTube as a resource of both cultural

How has the response been so far? The response to the project locally and in the press has been pretty amazing so far. The national and international press has been quite receptive to presenting the project, and this has ultimately led to a great breadth of discussion on the web. Locally, the take-out window has been very busy with between 40-70 customers coming by a day. Many people are unfamiliar with the food, but are surprisingly game to try it. Conversation about the project always seems to start with what do you serve, and then, when we describe the larger project, people start listing to us the other countries they think we should be focusing on after Iran. After that the conversation naturally goes to Iranian culture—perceptions and misperceptions— and often back to the customer's own cultural heritage. Already after a month in operation, and with a lot of local press, we’ve become a place where people from all over Pittsburgh come to discuss U.S. and Iranian politics and culture. We still have plenty of people who have never heard of the project come by, and, as small groups form outside the take-out window, it often catalyzes a natural public forum. We are very popular with the local Iranian community, as there are no Persian restaurants in the city, and many of the local Iranians are sympathetic to the way the project introduces locals to a more nuanced view of Iranian culture and daily life. Conversations have taken place between Iranians living in Pittsburgh and Pittsburghers who have never left the city, as well as everyone in between. We also present a series of programming that we have begun to host, including the first event, a dinner party between Tehran and Pittsburgh via live video chat, that allows for an even greater audience and, we think, greater depth of conversation: It’s a bit bizarre: we’ve received invitations from cities around the globe, as well as in the U.S., to create Conflict Kitchens. We have been debating creating the project in other locations, including at professional sports parks and arenas or attached to the backdoors of other restaurants. We even got an email from a family in Arizona, discussing their intentions to host their own Conflict Kitchen dinner every Monday night, with highlighted country/cuisine/culture chosen by their seven year old. It’s satisfying to see the premise reformed and modeled by other members of the public. Tell us about some interesting learning so far? We are surprised at the size of the Persian

July 2010

Conflict Kitchen creates a public forum and space for discussion that might not normally take place, mediated by the food. The take out window has become a space where patrons from all over Pittsburgh have come to discuss religion, daily ritual, politics, and cultural differences and similarities, all initiated through food. These conversations have taken place between Iranians living in Pittsburgh and Pittsburghers who have never left the city, as well as everyone in between. A surprising public response has been some patron's immediate interest in expressing their identity through ethnicity or nationality, utilizing it as a point of connection instead of a point of difference. Jon had a great conversation with two folks, one who happened to be a Buddhist and one who happened to be Muslim, about the role of daily prayer with food. I had an exchange with a young lady who's father is Iranian and mother is Pennsylvania Dutch about the conflicts that have arisen in her family and the struggles that she has felt as an individual coming from two very different traditions. There has also been a great breadth of discussion on the web. Did any famous people visit the restaurant? can you name a few? No famous people have visited the restaurant, as far as we know.

INTERVIEW Progenika continues International expansion with move into Kuwait PROGENIKA has provided the Central Blood Bank of Kuwait with cutting-edge technology to ensure compatibility in blood transfusions

According to the journal “Science” PROGENIKA is the foremost company for the detection of risks in blood transfusions. The Spanish personalized medicine company is currently pursuing its strong international expansion and has recently established its innovative technology in Kuwait. As a result the Central Blood Bank of Kuwait, which is the most important blood bank in the country, is now equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure compatibility between donor and receiver in blood transfusions. The company’s innovative BLOODchip technology involves the application of DNA chip technology to the genotyping of blood groups, and is the latest technology applied to blood groups through the analysis of the DNA of nine different blood groups. The DNA extracted from one blood sample is used to analyse 128 mutations, permitting the identification of

more than 60 phenotypes (the totality of characteristics in one person) and 12 platelet antigens related to immune response. This information enables a health specialist to select the ideal donor and offer patients maximum safety during blood transfusions. PROGENIKA’s research and products are based on biochips which make it possible to analyze thousands of genetic variables simultaneously, multiplying the capacity of conventional techniques to diagnose a disease, to forecast how aggressive its progress will be, and to predict patient response to treatment. To find out a little more, CityPages secured an interview with Ander Caballero, who is the Chief Operating Officer for PROGENIKA in the Middle East.

What, exactly, is meant by “compatibility in blood transfusions”?

day (or eight and a half hours) which makes it an extremely time-efficient tool for the specialist.

Compatibility in blood transfusions is about finding the perfect match between donor and recipient, related to blood groups. This gives the patient a huge advantage of getting the highest accuracy and safety with their blood transfusions preventing alloimmunisation and the consequent adverse reactions at such time.

What kind of problems can occur if the blood transfusion is not 100% accurate?

How can an average person benefit from this new technology? Thanks to this technology any individual giving blood, or finding himself in need of receiving blood, will receive from the Central Blood Bank the highest compatibility and safety regarding blood transfusions. How long does the process take? The BLOODchip analysis takes only one working 44

There are adverse transfusional reactions with different grades, which could result in anything from skin problems to heart failure. These adverse reactions are so important that most countries have very expensive hemovigilance programs just to detect, and try to solve, the problems related with blood transfusions. How big is the facility in Kuwait? The Central Blood Bank of Kuwait, in close collaboration with the Advanced Technology Company (ATC) and PROGENIKA, has established a brand new exclusive laboratory for BLOODchip blood group genotyping tests with state of the art facilities and cutting edge technology, which is being considered the reference lab for blood group

genotyping in Kuwait. The Central Blood Bank of Kuwait manages more than 60,000 samples per year and provides a service to 35 general hospitals in Kuwait - both governmental and private. The database which is located at the Central Blood Bank of Kuwait is covering the whole country, and more than 7,000 patients.. How many tests can be conducted during one day? The Central Blood Bank of Kuwait will now be able to run 24 BLOODchip blood group genotyping tests at a time, in any single working day. Why did the Central Blood Bank of Kuwait select PROGENIKA technology? Blood related diseases such as Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Thalassemias have a high prevalence in Kuwait, where many patients need to be given several transfusions. The challenge, therefore, is finding the most compatible blood for such patients.

July 2010

The Central Blood Bank of Kuwait chose PROGENIKA because we provide the latest technology, and the most cost effective BLOODchip blood group genotyping, in our Gold Standard ISBT 2008. Did PROGENIKA conduct any training for staff in Kuwait?

At PROGENIKA we believe that training of the team that is in charge of running the diagnostic kits is always a main part of the success of its projects. Thus we collaborated with both ATC and Central Blood Bank of Kuwait for the intensive one month long “on-site training of the staff for a proper understanding of the daily work with the genotyping technology. We also placed two of our lab specialists at the Central Blood Bank of Kuwait and will give support from our newly established branch which is located in Dubai at Dubai Biotechnology (DuBiotech). Where else in the middle-east is a similar technology available?

The installation of our BLOODchip technology at the Central Blood Bank of Kuwait has been a pioneering experience in the MENA region. This means that Kuwait has the first Blood Bank in this region that is implementing our BLOODchip technology on a daily laboratory work basis. How long did it take to implement the technology in Kuwait?

With close cooperation between the ATC, Central Blood Bank of Kuwait and PROGENIKA this important system for the safety of transfusions for Kuwaiti patients was successfully installed in just three weeks. Did you face any specific problems while implementing the technology in Kuwait?

We always found the ATC and Central Blood Bank teams were absolutely prepared and ready at all times. Their expertise in the field of laboratory workflow and molecular biology was extremely helpful for the understanding and successful implementing of this project, which will consequently have immediate positive results and benefits for the Kuwaiti people. The challenge of validation has been taken care of by the Central Blood Bank of Kuwait, and its expert staff, successfully implementing the necessary protocols for such an important issue. 45

In memory of and dedication to “Denise”

- Triumphant I hear it again…and I now see, Sounds of beat … sounding the echo of life, in all its glorious mystery, Sounds of piano …. reflecting the fingers of their master who feels and embraces the intoxicated melody , Sounds of electric vibes….dancing free with all the luminous skies they worship, Sparkles of light awaken by the sound that is alive and needs no sparkles to shine, A perfect algebraic orchestra brought to life from the orderly chaos…

- The light that shines Ah! much beauty is there, When soul mates finally embrace the pace, And glaze at that brighter flame that shows the way. The shiny glare carefully concealed, yet so easily unveiled if little care from their associate… For when time allows its privilege to no longer prevail and earth ceases to be a maze Thence soul mates finally find themselves, Inseparable is what becomes of their fate on this plane,

of the two seas, I remember now that there resides the tree of life, And it is there too from the land of swings that were led into the air all my precious wishes That I now joyfully live… Ah! prince of the two seas, what an honorable thing you did when once you saved me, for how could have I known that of the destiny which awaited me.

- Nocturne voyage And as the dark now reveres to the coming white night , Let us climb to the stars, for dreams are in this horizon … over there! Let us fly to the sky, for high is the birth place of the clouds, And best is the seat above West and East, so whispers the Japanese myth, Let us mount the Andean Cordillera and catch the good blessings of a sleeping sun you have never seen, Ah! Bright cavalier, come into my world and see how the thoughts have conquered the soul,

For the element of air that is theirs is the sameness as the blood running in their veins,

Come see how the energy of life vocalizes in rhymes and prose and in turn, gives birth to passionate ones, the abode of those who shall recreate life to the liking of your hearing,

For soul mates are but made from The same Hand to be re united by the invisible chains,

Do you feel all the conglomerate of everything that I seek with might ?

And walk together as free as the distances across that have ceased to be for there were never any….

Do you see the universe dance on this night ?

- The land of swings – And as I transport myself back to the land

reaches to an end, the heart sanctum of the inner kingdom that is mine shan’t be shaken by no mere gallant gentlemen but he who shall see in my eyes the eternity of a white night … and a wishful thinking it would be to believe otherwise…

- Conversation with thoughts Pondering on those we call the great healers of one’s world, how many amongst others shall truly recognize the one who descends in this life for you, with no other purpose but the oft giving of a perception more ultimate than any word could ever speak of and when the hour comes… And how many more amongst too few shall still dare to speak of the word love in our ever changing world…

- The vision of a night Last night acquaintances were made, Yet, long has it been since you have seen me, so says the dream, And little more do I know but certain I am that you are the tall watcher that slips through the world beyond as would a nagual with the warm heart of a child when passing the gate of time, But whilst time itself became at stake when across the sandy street of a falling afternoon I saw through your eyes and knew then that you are not the enemy yet neither are you just the friend, For now, you are the nameless face that was there for a moment…

Do you hear how the tide can strike twice ? But beware may I now say to you, for when dawn awakes and the nocturne voyage 47

HIND AL-NAHEDH'S BLOG

The Digital Rules of Public Relations

HIND AL-NAHEDH Social Media & PR Manager VIVA Telecoms Kuwait

Many marketing/PR professionals and agencies are already on board and becoming more sophisticated in their strategies daily. But for those who are new, I’d like to discuss why it is such a great platform for interacting. These are points I touched on during a recent panel on PR and Twitter however I wanted to follow up with more detail. Authenticity/personality – the world and web crave it

Recently, I presented at PubCon on the intersection of social media and PR. The session title was “experts on PR and Twitter,” however the session description went on to discuss a variety of networks. Therefore my interpretation was to speak on the intersection of social media and PR, and not just PR and Twitter. The social web is far more than just Twitter, and if Twitter is the extent of your participation you’re missing out. Lee’s diagram of social media and channels of distribution presents a visualization of a strong approach, where the centerpiece is a blog. The centerpiece could be anything of course, not just a blog – but the essential element is that it’s a place you control and not an external network. Using Twitter or any network you don’t control as the centerpiece is a mistake, because you’re building the value of a digital asset that isn’t really yours (no analytics, no control, no SEO benefit and if that network falls out of favor all your hard work is devalued). 48

Additionally, while today we speak about channel-specific PR or marketing, the future will be different. Traditional and digital PR will merge and it will just be seen as PR. A quote from William Gibson adds clarity to this: Segmentation will end when the digital divide is bridged. In the meantime, the idea of digital PR continues to proliferate while we see a decline in traditional. A recent digital readiness report states 18% of marketing decision makers have no interest whatsoever in traditional marketing. This shows a good percentage are already embracing digital fully and is a potential harbinger of the future. Other data in that survey adds to this: a majority agree that knowledge of social networks (80%), blogging, podcasting and RSS (87%), and micro-blogging (72%) is either important or very important when it comes to PR and marking hiring.

There are too many faceless brands, companies and even, amazingly, people on the planet. We crave authenticity – and digital channels reward it higher than traditional. This is because they are personal versus the fact that traditional channels produce content as the result of a polished, refined process. The truth is the web is not meant to be a finished product; it is merely an avenue to express ourselves. Additionally, the web enables you to talk with consumers and prospects, not at them. Embrace PR with this in mind and you’ll nurture a very different kind of relationship than those who treat it like a broadcast tool. It scales – popular brands just get more popular The idea of social media scaling for customer service is of course a misnomer – it doesn’t. But popularity on the other hand can continue to grow. That’s not to say it’s easy to keep up, but look at the runaway growth of certain brands, networks and media and you’ll see this to be true. People like Robert Scoble and Michael Arrington just get more popular, and socially active brands like Zappos and Whole Foods gain greater share of voice daily especially when stacked against competitors. Social media applied strategically for PR helps make a brand referential. And when something becomes referential, it just keeps growing.

Permission marketing is a core skill for digital PR and marketing professionals to embrace. By growing a community and getting people to say “yes, I want to hear from you,” you’ll earn the permission to share your messages with them long term. And overtime you will develop influence, trust and eventually be seen as an authority on a subject. And as Brian Clarke sagely advises: authority rules.

Digital media – due to links, sourcing and aggregation potentiates anything which is referential. Staking a claim sooner rather than later is how you can do this and begin to grow organically. As digital channels continue rise in popularity and influence it will become more difficult to do this as more attempt to do so.

Leverage – digital PR is your social proofing If you acquire digital PR and never do anything with it, you’re not optimizing your social proofing. If you’re gaining endorsements from credible industry professionals or generating tons of buzz and links about your product and not showcasing that, it is a missed opportunity. While many will have seen the buzz initially, what about those who have not? Here at TopRank, we embrace this by aggregating mentions of our brand in a digital marketing newsroom. Put your digital PR to work instead of letting it accumulate digital dust. Even consider taking it offline to win new business: comments, endorsements, interviews and feedback from trusted externalities can be a persuasive force. Intersection with SEO – links are by-product As discussed frequently at Online Marketing Blog social media and SEO have a symbiotic relationship. And digital marketers who go a step further find there is a nexus between SEO, social media and PR. Uncover this and you will discover the three play off each other for even greater results. Your keyword glossary should not be used merely for SEO – rather, use it across all marketing channels, including in PR programs. After all, generating more search demand for keywords you are optimized for is only going to help you long term. PR has changed – pull is now more effective

If you have to choose between BlackBerry and iPhone, which one would you go for? and why?

Pull PR is superior to push, there is no escaping this. A (not so) secret part of media is this: media report on media. It’s so simple, yet so overlooked. By becoming media you embrace a pull strategy naturally and will attract attention from all other types of media – both professional and amateur. Quick conclusion Social media for PR is a dynamic, constant process, and not all companies will be agile enough to embrace it. But it allows truly passionate and authentic brands to stand out, build a tribe and become referential. The few brands and professionals that get it right are memorable because there are so many who get it wrong. Having an effective strategy and the patience to see it pay off, enabling your brand “tip” in the social web is reserved for those who can commit long term. But those who do will see returns far greater than traditional PR can offer. Today I shared a brief overview of why to use social media for PR. If you’re not already a reader here be sure and subscribe, as next I will explore how to use social media for PR.

Happy Birthday, America! In the United States of America, Independence Day (commonly known as the Fourth of July) is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, which declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day in America is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Similar to other summerthemed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors, and many families celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, the long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations like streamers, balloons, and clothing are generally coloured red, white, and blue, the colours of the American flag. Parades are often held in the morning, while firework displays take place in the evening at parks, fairgrounds, and town squares. Americans living away from their homeland will doubtless have celebrated the occasion, not least those who are here in Kuwait. We, at CityPages, decided that we would take this as an opportunity to learn more about a little piece of America that’s here in the Middle East.

The American Business Council Kuwait (ABCK) has recently celebrated its 25th birthday. According to its newly-appointed Chairman, Gregory J. Stevens, the Council has three principle objectives. First and foremost, the ABCK aims to foster the relationship between American companies who are interested in importing their products into the country and Kuwaiti partners or companies who are interested in American products. This leads to the second objective which, having fostered the initial relationship, strives to provide an intermediary or support structure for US companies who are interested in progressing their business activities in Kuwait. Thirdly, the Council aims to provide assistance to Kuwaiti companies or the government to identify suitable opportunities through private or sovereign funds. The ABCK also participates in the Middle East Council of Chambers of Commerce and the American Chamber of Commerce, and are members of both organisations. In fact, both Chambers of Commerce operate in the same way but in the Middle East, it is organised on a more regional basis. Once each year there is a meeting attended by many of the members where there is a big discussion of issues like taxation, improving conditions for Americans working outside America, and encouraging the US to welcome investments in public funds and sovereign funds. Like any formal organisation, the ABCK is reliant on a solid organisational structure. Gregory, the Chairman, has been a member for six years and a Board Member for the last two years before accepting his appointment as Chairman in May this year. The Council comprises a number of focus groups which are based on the prime objectives of council, but reflecting key market sectors – Defence; Education; Environment; Health; Infrastructure & Transportation; Oil & Gas; and Banking & Finance. Each of these focus groups is headed by members who have expertise in the related fields, and who are willing to perform detailed studies on their areas to provide information to those American companies who match the market needs and who are willing to bring their products, services and expertise to Kuwait. The Defence Focus Group, for example, meets

50

with all the contracting and sub-contracting companies who work with the US Army in Kuwait, to understand their needs and assist in identifying solutions to any problems arising. This Group also focuses on exploring the avenues of opportunity within the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Interior, to gain a better understanding of how these two principal ministries work and to identify any requirements they may have ... and thereby highlight these requirements to relevant companies in the US. For the Environment Focus Group, there are some tremendous opportunities in Kuwait that could be of great interest to companies in the US, who have great capabilities and technology. Within the Oil & Gas sector, US companies have licenses, technology, and established processes for petroleum engineering. However, it is surprising to learn (from a recent report published by KNPC and KOC) that only a small number of companies bid for their contracts. Mr. Stevens suggest that the Focus Group will therefore try to better understand the requirements of these two companies, and to match them with US companies operating in the upstream and downstream sectors. Education is yet another important focus area because a lot of schools in Kuwait are based on the US education system, which brings a great opportunity for US institutes of higher education to introduce their programs into Kuwait. Meanwhile there is a growing population in Kuwait which has requirements for education at all different levels.

Banking & Finance is the heart and soul of any business, and there are a lot of financial institutions who are members of the ABCK. Whenever a US company arrives or wants to establish relations in Kuwait, they need to have knowledge of the various local or regional US banks which are available, and so this focus group updates the information provided to them on a daily basis. Everyone is given a warm welcome to attend meetings of the ABCK, and there are two types of membership (Corporate and Individual). Corporate membership is available to US companies, for those who have operations in Kuwait, or for Kuwaiti companies who represent US companies in Kuwait. Although there is considerable social networking at the regular monthly general meetings, as well as the formal side of the ABCK there is an active involvement in social activities. The Council hosts an annual “Thanksgiving Dinner” which always proves very popular and which, according to Deborah Jones, the US Ambassador, is the most American of all holiday celebrations! Last year there was an end of year holiday event for families and children, held during holiday season, which was very successful and attended by about one thousand people. When asked if there had been plans for any 4th of July celebrations, Mr. Stevens commented that “Unfortunately, because of the extremely hot weather, we cannot have outdoor events or fireworks like they have back at home in America. Added to that, a lot of our members are travelling during this time of the year so we do not have big numbers presently in Kuwait. But we are planning a huge event for next year. And because our recent 25th anniversary event was such a great success, we are already looking forward to our 26th anniversary event very eagerly. This event will be on 25thJanuary 2011 and, as it will be the time when everyone has arrived back after their Christmas and New Year vacation, we are expecting another large turnout”, adding that, “of course I would like to thank VIVA who sponsored our previous event, and I would like to encourage other companies to generate similar sponsorship ideas”.

COOKING TUNA KABABS WITH OLIVE & CASPER SALSA There are several ways of making skordalia. Some like to make it with potato, some use almonds. Serve it with lamb and it is equally delicious. Tuna is preferred fish for this dish, but if it is not available you can replace it with swordfish. A tip: you can also serve the olive and caper salsa with lavash (a crisp flatbread) as an appetizer.

Skordalia

• 1 egg yolk • 60g ground almonds • 4 cloves garlic, crushed • ¼ lemon juice • 1 cup light olive oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Process the egg yolk, almonds, and garlic in a food processor until well combined. Add the lemon juice and process until combined then, with the motor running, add the oil gradually until the mixture is thick, then season to taste. Thin with a little cold water if the mixture is too thick. Set aside.

Olives & Caper Salsa

• ¾ cup chopped mixed herbs including flat-leafed parsley, chives, dill and coriander • 1/3 cup pitted black olives, finely chopped • 2 teaspoons capers, drained and chopped • 2 spring onions, finely chopped • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil Combine all the ingredients and season to taste. Set aside.

Tuna Kebabs

• 700g tuna, cut into 2cm chunks • 1 lemon, sliced then the slices quartered • Extra virgin olive oil for brushing • 2 ripened tomatoes, halved and sliced Soak 4 bamboo skewers in water for 1 hour. Thread the tuna on to the skewers, placing a piece of lemon between each chunk. Brush the tuna with oil and barbecue or char grill over high heat for 1-2 minutes each side, depending on the thickness. Spoon the skordalia on to plates, top with tomato slices and a tuna kebab, and spoon the salsa over or serve on the side.

Everything You Need to Know About Onions

W

e know. Just the thought of them brings tears to your eyes. But it doesn’t have to be this way! When you cut onions, peel away the dry outer layers but avoid cutting into the root (flatter) end, where there’s a concentration of eye-watering sulfuric compounds. Now you’re cooking and not crying. If you love onions read on for an easy primer. Buying

Storing

In general, look for onions that are heavy for their size and free of blemishes.

Keep bunched scallions and leeks in the vegetable bin of your refrigerator and use within 4 days. All other types should be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 2 weeks.

How to Use Them 4

5

2 2. Scallions Sometimes referred to as green onions, they have a pleasing mild flavor that lends itself to using raw in salads and as a garnish for soups or pasta, as well as in quick-cooking dishes like stir-fries. 6. Leeks Heartier than Scallions; best when sautéed. Trim both ends and wash well. Slice thinly and use as a base for stews and soups or add to braised meat dishes.

6

5. Shallots

Grown in Georgia, where the low-sulfur soil gives them an intense sweetness, Vidalias can be eaten raw. When cooked, they make great onion rings and also add a caramelized flavor to pastas, roasts and casseroles.

3. Yellow Onions These full-flavored standbys can be put into almost anything. When cooked, they turn a light brown and add a tangy sweetness to your dish.

1. Red Onions

4. Vidalia

Sometimes mistaken for garlic because of their similar shape, shallots have a sweet, bold flavor. Ideal in sauces and gravies, or sautéed and added to vegetable side dishes. 6. Leeks Heartier than scallions; best when sautéed. Trim both ends and wash well. Slice thinly and use as a base for stews and soups or add to braised meat dishes.

3

These are a good choice for using raw, as in salads, garnishes or salsas. They’re also great when grilled and have the bonus of maintaining most of their color. 53

our five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. We have lots of different kinds of cells in our body. Some of these cells help with our different senses and each sense involves a special kind of cell. Cells inside our eyes detect photons of light, while tiny, delicate parts of our ears sense the different vibrations of sound waves. All those cells are hooked up to our central nervous system, which relays the signals triggered by those special cells to our brain where they’re processed into a response. It may sound simple—touch an ice cube and your brain tells you is “it’s cold”—but it involves a lot of specialized cells and a complex transfer system to transmit signals to the brain. Then once the signal arrives, your brain needs to figure out what’s going on and give you the right picture, sound, smell, taste or feeling. And it all happens at lightning speed! What is actually happening inside our bodies when we sense something? Each of our senses allows us to experience our surroundings in very different ways. A hot summer day can engage all the senses as we feel the heat, wear sunglasses against the brightness, smell the hot asphalt, and hear the ice-cream vendor coming with the promise of a refreshingly tasty treat. Or a winter day can thrill with the sight of a beautiful snow-covered wonderland, but serve up a vicious bite when we feel the blast of freezing wind.

So, What do our five senses have to do with nanotechnology? Scientists study our five senses to learn more about how these complex systems work, so nanotechnology helps shed new light on what’s really happening in the tiniest parts of our bodies and can help us develop new tools that can sense like our bodies do.

The new SLS AMG Mercedes-Benz Vehicle concept "The new SLS AMG Mercedes-Benz is a fascinating supercar that will capture the hearts of all car enthusiasts. The SLS AMG represents pure emotion for the Mercedes-Benz brand and is set to become one of the most coveted sports cars of our time," says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG features a distinctively puristic design, superior dynamics and levels of safety and everyday practicality that are legendary at Mercedes. The ideal weight distribution (47:53 percent between front and rear axles) and low centre of gravity underline the uncompromising nature of the sports car concept. During the development phase of the new gullwing model, AMG developers benefited from the valuable knowhow of specialists at the Mercedes Technology Centre (MTC) in Sindelfingen. The aim of such networked development was to make the SLS AMG gullwing a synthesis of the strengths of Mercedes-Benz and AMG.

Design With its unique gullwing doors, the SLS AMG is a fascinating new interpretation of the classic Mercedes sports car. The exciting interplay between concave and convex surfaces, combined 58

with more understated design features, create an unforgettable visual impact. The characteristic curved design of the opened gullwing doors is extended to other parts of the car – the side mirrors, tail lights, the 3-spoke steering wheel, and the flow of the contrasting top-stitching from the centre console to the instrument panel.

July 2010

Interior Opening the unique gullwing doors offers a clear view of the interior with sports styling – and immediately conjures up an association with a plane cockpit. The central design focus (aircraft construction) is extended to the wing-shaped instrument panel, the centre console in the style of a jet control panel and the four distinctive air vents, which are reminiscent of aircraft engines. The interior of the new gullwing model delivers authentic motorsport functionality, legendary Mercedes safety standards and outstanding ergonomic qualities. A range of fine materials, including nappa leather and real metal trim (real carbon trim available as an option), emphasise the handfinished character of the SLS interior and reveal a meticulous attention to detail. Electrically adjustable sports seats with integrated head restraints provide optimum lateral support and excellent comfort for long journeys. The AMG Performance leather steering wheel in 3-spoke design with flat lower section and 365 mm rim, gearshift paddles, and real metal highlights emphasise the vehicle’s authentic hand-finished character – as does the attractive instrument cluster.

AUTOMOTIVE

Standard SLS features include hand-stitched designo leather with contrasting top-stitching on the instrument panel, sports seats, door interior trim and armrests.

Exterior The future-oriented, puristic design has drawn inspiration from the proportions of classic Mercedes-Benz sports cars. Opening the gullwing doors reveals the sweeping curved design with large opening angle. The extended bonnet, distinctive V-shaped front section and large air intakes as well as the low-position passenger compartment and the gently sloping rear of the vehicle are the embodiment of sports car design and give it the true look of a racing car. The innovative bi-xenon front headlamps with daytime driving lights and LED indicator lamps not only illuminate the road but also contribute greatly to the distinctive visual impact of the supercar. Viewed from the side, the long wheelbase and short body overhangs are eye-catching features. The distinctive waistline that runs along the entire side wall and the prominent, powerful wheel arches underline the classic design of the SLS AMG – as if cast from a single mould. The pronounced curved design of the rear windscreen offers an aesthetic transition from the solid B-pillar to the flat sloping boot lid. Super-flat, wing-shaped LED tail lights provide a fascinating and distinctive night design. As with a sports car, the LED reversing light and the LED rear fog lamps are centrally integrated. A robust rear bumper with diffuser and fully integrated tailpipes ensure an uninterrupted view of the wide rear tyres. The rear aerofoil, when retracted, blends seamlessly into the overall rear end design. As soon as the SLS AMG reaches a speed of more than 120 km/h, the rear aerofoil is automatically extended. It can also be activated manually at a lower speed by pressing a button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT.

BOOK RELEASES Tongues of Serpents Naomi Novik

Bonds of Justice Nalini Singh Return to the powerful, turbulent Psy/Changeling world created by the “amazingly talented”* Nalini Singh, as a human detective finds himself working the most unlikely of cases—in the dark heart of a Councilor’s domain… Max Shannon is a good cop, one of the best in

Prince Elias Trueheart is a Null—a noble of the royal Trueheart line who has no magic of his own. Resigned to a life of obscurity, his entire world is turned upside down the night Thrain comes for him. After the Blackwater prince claims him in a way Elias feels he can never forgive, he kidnaps him as well and drags him back to the snake pit he calls home—Castle Black.

The somber sixth installment (after 2008's Victory of Eagles) of the Napoleonic era adventures of Capt. Will Laurence and Chinese-British dragon Temeraire opens with the pair exiled to New South Wales for saving French dragons from a plague while England and France were at war. The government of the colony is hotly disputed, and both the deposed royal governor and the insurrectionists hope to ally with Laurence and his draconic companions. When a dragon egg is kidnapped, an expedition over the Blue Mountains turns into a frantic hunt for the culprits. Novik fans will be glad to see their old favorite characters growing and changing yet still very much themselves, but the lack of significant interaction with native Australian humans or dragons leaves a certain emptiness at the heart of the story, exacerbated by long stretches of travel through physical and emotional desolation.

The Brazen Bride Stephanie Laurens

The Cold Kiss of Death of British author Suzanne McLeod’s second novel in her Spellcr acker s. com urban fantasy series. Following on shortly after where the first Spellcrackers book left off, The Cold

Six years ago, eighteenyear-old Lady Isabella Scranton scandalized all of London by eloping the night of her come-out ball with the notorious rake, Lord Mac Mackenzie. After three turbulent years of marriage, she scandalized London once again--this time by leaving him.

In 1822, Logan Monteith and three others fled Bombay using four different routes to reach England with information that will destroy a traitor to the Crown. Only one of the four has the genuine proof, but the Black Cobra

Kiss of Death wastes little time on a recap of previous events, making it necessary to have read The Sweet Scent of Blood before even thinking of tackling Cold Kiss.

Now the reformed Mac has returned, and he wants one thing: Isabella back in his life, his house, his bed. He'll do anything he has to, play any game, as long as he gets her back. Isabella resists, but when she agrees to pose for erotic paintings he's been working on, she realizes her body has never stopped craving her husband’s very skilled touch. Mac is determined to show Isabella that he's a changed man, but three years without her has only increased his hunger for her.

Cult must go after each one as they have no way of knowing who carries the real evidence.

As with The Sweet Scent of Blood, Cold Kiss is a complex tale that follows the adventures of Genny Taylor, a noble fae sidhe who works for the London based Spellcrackers franchise, a business that specialises in sorting out magical problems. Before jumping to the obvious (well, obvious for fantasy fiction!) conclusion - it’s not a preternatural detective agency - it’s more like a magical version of Rentokil, dealing in supernatural pest control and cleaning up magical messes. The Witches Council who controls all magical businesses have taken a dislike to Genny since she got outed as a 3V sufferer.

When an ingenious forger with designs on Mac's paintings, and Isabella herself, comes dangerously near, Mac sets himself up as Isabella’s protector and vows to never leave her side, whether his independent and proud lady likes it or not

Logan reaches Lisbon, a hot bed of Black Cobra Cult agents waiting for him. He manages to get on the Heloise Leger, a Portuguese merchant vessel bound for Portsmouth, but in the English Channel they run into trouble from the weather and from cult assassins. The late Regency romantic suspense story line is refreshed by having most of the adventure in England yet also contains constant exciting action as the tough yet seemingly inept Cult mount attack after attack. Fast-paced throughout, fans will enjoy this engaging Black Cobra entry as the lead couple is another delightful pairing of a brave man with a 63 brazen woman.

Kate Moss - TOPSHOP SPRING SUMMER 2010 Kate Moss Topshop presents a collection of beautiful vintage inspired signature pieces for Spring Summer 2010. An eclectic mix of eras, styles, fabrics and colour palettes reflect Kate’s bohemian take on dressing and cover every occasion for the season ahead. Dresses dominate the collection varying from casual summer frocks to show-stopping evening gowns; a pretty green floral print cotton sundress with a flattering v-neck and the ‘Kate Peasant’ dress with its frills and wide billowing arms are easy throw-on summer staples. For a more elegant daywear option, a cream lace angel sleeve dress and soft rose printed chiffon babydoll are the perfect choice. The exquisite buttercup silk sleeveless dress with a floral embroidered sweetheart insert epitomises summer chic. Maxi dresses steal the limelight; a nude silk diamante scattered bias-cut 1920s-inspired maxi is contrasted with a Woodstock-esque floral chiffon design, whilst an aubergine georgette gown with a beaded halterneck exudes glamour and a pale yellow chiffon tiered dress is more subtle and feminine. The contemporary faded ditsy print washed cotton mini dress with a maxi length graduated back is the dress of the season.
