EVENTS Mamma Mia! Global success for Kuwait Little Theatre Knowing Me, Knowing You (aha) I was really rather excited when I first heard that the Kuwait Little Theatre (affectionately known simply as the KLT) was planning to bring Mamma Mia! to Kuwait in 2010. Although the stage musical has been performed in top theatres in New York’s Broadway, London’ West End and around the world, I had yet to see it for myself. If you’ve seen the film (that was based on the original stage production) then you’ll know that the scene is set on a small Greek Island paradise, and those songs such as Dancing Queen, I Have A Dream, Voulez-Vous and Take A Chance On Me are woven into an enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship. I went along to a performance at the end of the first week, aware that tickets for 7 of the 8 scheduled shows had already sold out and that there were even waiting lists for most nights which had encouraged the theatre management to add an extra performance on Sunday 23rd May, and I was consequently expecting a good, fun night of entertainment. But when I arrived (and I have to admit it was my first visit to this small theatre in Ahmadi) I was worried by the sight of the theatre building and lowered my overall expectations accordingly - the building’s external appearance can best be described as a ramshackle old tin hut, with quite a small and shabby foyer and auditorium. But I ventured in and appreciated that being small means, at least, that there is an excellent view of the stage from all seats, and I joined an audience which seemed eager for the curtain to rise. The lights dimmed; the music started; the curtains opened; a spotlight was drawn to the solitary figure on stage; and a silence spread across the audience such that I could have heard a pin drop! The show had begun. What I hadn’t expected was what followed – two hours of musical theatre that had the audience laughing at the dialogue, clapping and singing along with some of the songs (and I counted twenty two different songs, not including the infectious “megamix” reprise finale which even inspired many in the audience to get on their feet and start dancing); two hours of fun that represented the highest quality of amateur dramatics, bordering on a truly professional production! On leaving the theatre to go home, I found myself amidst a sea of smiling, happy people who had obviously been captivated by the energy of the performance, and who would be digging out their ABBA CDs in the following days! So what made the show such a success? The music of Abba is, of course, timeless and ever-popular, and the script – taken directly from the original production staged in London’s West End – is straightforward 8

and appealing. But Kirsty McDonagh, in her debut as a director, made some inspired casting decisions in which all the characters became totally believable. In the lead role of Donna, KLT faithful Meryl Bunce reprised the role of the other Meryl (Streep) in the movie, but KLT’s Meryl eclipsed the oscar-winner with her amazing voice and singing ability! In the role of her daughter, Sophie, we were treated to the vocal talents and beauty of 19-year-old Kuwaiti Tamara Quaddoumi. Lisa Bowdery (as the glamorous Tanya) and Sharon Williams (as the humorous Rosie) each gave truly memorable performances which showcased their individual talents, whilst Gregory Dunlop also gave a stunning portrayal of Sophie’s Boyfriend Sky. There was a genuine feeling that Sophie was naturally best friends with her bridesmaids Ali and Lisa (played by Jemma Standen and Emma Neilly), and the three dads (Sam, Harry and Bill) were very ably played by Mike Blackburn, David May and our own CityPages Executive editor Paul Tunbridge! As Sky’s best friends, Adel Al Ansari (Pepper) and Tim Waddell (Eddie) provided some light relief, and Matt Aston triumphed in his interpretation of the Church Minister! Completing the cast was an excellent ensemble of nine who sang, danced and filled the stage with magical moments at all the right times. And the international acclaim? Well, this being Kuwait, it was unsurprising that the audience comprised a broad mix of nationalities with locals sitting alongside expats from a variety of countries and continents. But my attention was drawn, when writing this review, to a clip that had been placed on the YouTube internet website by a member of the audience. Within a short period it had already been viewed more than 400 times and as a result, through facebook links, phone calls and text messages, cast and crew members have received messages of praise and congratulation from ‘fans’ as far away as Africa, India, Europe and Canada! Does this mean that the KLT is setting new standards? I think it might! After my visit, I am certainly a fan and will be awaiting the release of the official KLT Mamma Mia DVD (which I’m told is already in production and will be available from their website – www.theklt.com ) and, whilst I am unlikely to follow my colleague on to the stage, I will most certainly be at the little theatre for their next production! For those who enjoyed the show and can’t wait for the DVD, or for those who’d like to see a little of what they missed, why not google “Mamma Mia in Kuwait” and check out the clip on YouTube for yourself? Now then ... where did I put my ABBA CD? Mamma Mia, Here I go again........

INSIGHT

What is World Music Day? Music is never simply noise...

Jameel Arif

...it is the sound of a society, of a time, of a place. Music marks the spirit of people; people make music that reflects their thinking and feeling. Music, then, always has the potential to be dangerous - it can inflame the revolutionary which is why it has been banned and censored at many points in history. It articulates the ideas and emotions that are too strong for words, and that "cannot remain silent." This refusal to remain silent is why music has so much social power. As this month we celebrate the world music day, we explore music as a reflection of, and force for, social change. Music that is angry, joyous, and necessary... The FĂŞte de la Musique, also known as World Music Day, is a worldwide music festival that takes place around the summer solstice. On that day, sidewalks, parks, community gardens, stores and more become impromptu musical stages for both amateur and professional musicians to showcase their talents. All concerts and performances are free and open to the public. The FĂŞte de la Musique began in France in 1982 and has since spread to Belgium, Britain, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Israel, China, India, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Romania, Colombia and other countries. New York City held its first festival in 2007. Learn more about music here and learn about some of the voices from different countries and different times that have cried out against injustice.

1871, France The Internationale The Internationale was written in French by Eugene Pottier after the fall of the Paris commune of 1871. The Paris commune was established by workers and citizens, and encouraged radical reforms like equal rights for women and controlled prices. The commune was overthrown, and this song is now the global anthem of both Marxist and non-Marxist socialist parties. 10

1897, South Africa Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (God Bless Africa)

Written in 1897 by Enoch Sontonga, a teacher, this song was adopted by South Africans, and sung for many years during the anti-apartheid struggle by the oppressed as an act of defiance against the apartheid regime. In 1925, it was officially adopted by the African National Congress. It is now the national anthem of postapartheid South Africa.

1939, USA Strange Fruit by Abel Meeropol This song, written by Abel Meeropol, a Jewish communist schoolteacher, is considered to be the first significant song of the civil rights movement and the first direct musical assault upon racial lynchings in the American South. It was first performed by Billie Holiday at New York's radical nightclub CafĂŠ Society in 1939; protest songs on behalf of America's blacks were almost unheard of at the time. The "strange fruit" of the title are lynched blacks, hanging from trees across the American south.

1950, USA We Shall Overcome "We Shall Overcome" is a protest song that has been sung in numerous contexts and in support of numerous causes: from the movement against race discrimination in the southern United States to South African prisons, from striking workers to Chinese students in Tiananmen Square. It is an adaptation from a mid-19th century hymn that was instantly popularized in the 1950s, when the Rev. Martin Luther King led a boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. This song has become universal, heard all over the world in situations where social justice is demanded.

1977, Nigeria Zombie by Fela Kuti Fela Kuti wrote this song in criticism of the ruling military Junta of General Obasanjo in Nigeria. Condemning the government for its harsh policies that force citizens to act mindlessly like zombies, Nigerian youth embraced this song as a sign of rebellion against the army regime. After his death in 1997, Fela Kuti remains a major musical influence and a symbol of political rebellion.

1979, Argentina Corazon de Estudiante (Heart of a Student) by Mercedes Sosa Mercedes Sosa started her musical career in the 1960s in Argentina. Throughout her career, her politically and socially conscious lyrics became increasingly discomforting to the military authorities who were governing Argentina, and it was very common that her songs were censored in the official radios. After being arrested during a concert near the end of the 1970s along with 350 people in the audience, she went into exile to Europe. She carried on an intense international artistic activity during her years in exile.

1969, Chile Plegaria A Un Labrador (A Worker's Prayer) by Victor Jara Victor Jara's songs are a combination of traditional folk music and left-wing political activism. He supported Salvador Allende, who in 1970 was elected President of Chile. However, the military, who opposed Allende's politics, staged a (US-aided) coup on September 11th : Allende was killed, Jara was arrested and kept in prison, until his murder by the military approximately 5 days later at Chile Stadium, along with countless other victims. His musical recordings were distributed worldwide after his death. In September 2003, the Chile Stadium was renamed Victor Jara Stadium.

"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent." - Victor Hugo -

1986, China Nothing to my Name by Cui Jian In May of 1986, at a Beijing concert, Cui Jian performed for the first time "Nothing to My Name" to a stunned crowd. In 1989 in Tiananmen Square, this hit became the anthem of youth across China. He performed the song in the square, singing to the disenfranchised youth who felt they had nothing to their names. Despite his immense popularity, Cui Jian is still rarely allowed to play live in Beijing, due to the political charge of his music.

1998, Zimbabwe June 2010 Chimurenga by Thomas Mapfumo Chimurenga is a Shona word which means to fight or struggle. Thomas Mapfumo coined the phrase chimurenga music to describe his revolutionary music, supporting the struggle for human rights, political dignity and social justice, which evolved during Zimbabwe's struggle to gain independence in the early seventies. Even after Zimbabwe's independence was achieved in 1980, Mapfumo did not stop his criticism of government misdeeds. After much intimidation from the government, Mapfumo moved his family to the US in 2000, fearing for their continued safety in Zimbabwe.

1977, Afghanistan Zanan Barpa (Arise Oh Women) by Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan was founded in 1977 as an organization of women who support women's rights and human rights for both men and women. The RAWA struggles for education, health care, equality for women, secular democracy, and opposes fundamentalists of all kinds, including the Taliban, who banned music under their regime. 11

INSIGHT / CAREER

Risk, Corporate Governance & the CIA Risk is an important aspect of any business operation. Without taking business risks, growth and profit would be almost impossible. It permeates all of the fundamental business challenges companies face, from recruiting the best people to managing the business’ finance. However, the best companies are not those that avoid risk, but rather those that understand and control the risks they are taking. In the current economic climate, the biggest risk for most companies is not failing to meet their compliance requirements – but failing to meet their strategic targets. This is the opinion of over 100 industry analysts from more than 20 disciplines who contributed to a 2009 Ernst & Young business risk report. In it, the analysts conclusively ranked the credit crunch aftershocks and the ongoing global recession as the most important business risks for 2009 – displacing regulation and compliance from the top spot. Now well into 2010, global markets are experiencing a limited recovery in relation to their 2009 levels, but sentiment remains cautiously optimistic at best. The decreased focus on compliance-related processes provides an opportunity for internal audit functions to increase their involvement in enterprise risk management (ERM) efforts for the organization. With regards to internal audit, the implications of this new business risk environment are farreaching, to the point where leading organizations have already begun the process of repositioning the function. Many companies are expanding internal audit’s focus to cover assuring these strategic risks and business performance targets. This requires internal audit to consider strategic and operational risk, including strategy alignment, operational effectiveness and efficiency. Internal audit needs to become an integral part of driving and supporting business strategy. But how can the function quickly break out of the compliance mindset and evolve into a fully fledged leadership role that delivers real value to your business? This can be done broadening internal audit’s focus to include strategic and operational risk as well as business improvement. For organizations that still see internal audit as a “tick-the-box” function, this leadership role may seem like a quantum leap. But forward thinking companies started recognizing the potential for internal audit transformation long before the global 12

financial crisis. In July 2008, Ernst & Young’s Global Internal Audit Survey (GIAS) – of 348 companies across 23 industries – revealed internal audit functions were already being re-tooled to shift them from compliance to business improvement. Following are the three pillars on which an effective internal audit functions are built; Governance, Infrastructure and Operations, and People. Governance Increasingly, audit committees are seeking internal audit’s participation in discussions regarding process improvement recommendations, emerging risks and trends and risks in the business (including insights around risk appetite and tolerance levels) other than those already included in the internal audit plan. This, in turn, better positions internal audit as a strategic player in risk management and increases the value delivered through execution of the internal audit plan. Infrastructure and Operations Increasing the focus on specialty risk areas is a growing trend that is largely being driven by expanding audit committee and management expectations. Internal audit has an opportunity to provide additional value to the organization by increasing coverage of specialty risks that help improve the business overall. In addition to internal audit, companies use multiple risk management functions to help manage the complex risks they face in their unique environments. Though many of these may fall outside the competency of the internal audit function, internal audit can play a role by evaluating and monitoring the effectiveness of the various functions in managing and providing timely reporting of these risks to the audit committee and management. Furthermore, investments in technology and the skill sets to perform continuous auditing should allow many internal audit functions to reap additional benefits to address both the breadth and depth of risks throughout the organization.

People Recruiting, training, and retaining talented internal audit professionals are not new challenges for organizations. However, these activities have become more difficult over the past few years for a variety of reasons. As the demand for qualified audit professionals has escalated, the pool of available candidates remains limited. Recruiting qualified professionals, however, is just half the story; developing and retaining qualified internal audit professionals who can meet the everchanging needs of the organization present yet another challenge. It is imperative that internal audit departments acquire the skills needed to address the highest priority risks faced by the organization. An essential part of an internal auditor’s qualification is a relevant certification. Within the world of internal auditing, the preeminent certification is the Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) designation issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors. According to the Institute, the Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) is the only globally accepted designation for internal auditors and the standard by which individuals demonstrate their competence and professionalism in internal auditing. Moreover, earning the CIA designation is more than just proof of what you know and what you’ve achieved – it’s the best way for auditing professionals to communicate to the world that they are prepared to meet today’s challenges head on. The exams test auditors’ knowledge of current internal auditing practices and risks and controls. As such, the certification is significant determinant of an auditor’s competency, knowledge of professional standards, and ability to utilize an appropriate skillset during the course of any audit. The combination of all the aforementioned factors; a risk-based audit approach, active management involvement, prioritization of organizational risks across all functions, and qualified internal auditors work together to help strengthen an organization’s internal control environment, and drive it towards the achievement of its objectives. Floppy Disks - RIP John MacArthur

I

can’t remember when I last handled a floppy disk. Actually that's a lie. One fell out from behind an old desk drawer the other day and I had to dust it off to see what it was. It was a black one – the early ones only came, like Model T Fords, in black, until someone had the staggeringly clever idea that they wouldn't cost any more if they were housed in rather jolly, multicoloured cases. It was the distant, fuzzily favourite uncle who quietly passed away, but nobody can quite remember when. Can we truthfully pinpoint the moment in our own tech-savvy, fast-paced lives when the floppy disk died and was ceremonially laid to rest? It had become like an old, not particularly comfortable pair of shoes, their soles and laces so worn out as to be useless, but with enough memories invested in them that throwing them out would give us pause. I remember when floppy disks were actually floppy. I’m old enough to recall the eight-inch ones, and remember the five-and-a-quarter inch ones very well, one could waggle them knowledgeably whilst talking about something else. I was asked by my then head teacher, long-dead now, poor soul, whether in addition to running a physics department, I might like to 'look after the computers'. Had I realised the blood, sweat, tears and screaming frustrations of recalcitrant, unco-operative late 80's vintage so-called educational PC's almost before they were called PC's, I might have politely declined, thus enriching my life and freeing up epochs of leisure time. They were black, squat and ugly, like oversized, aggressive dung beetles. Power supplies to them used to fail. Often. The malevolent gremlin residing inside used to wait until 3;45 on a Friday afternoon, seconds before the bell for last lesson and the weekend before pulling the plug, necessitating four hours of fiddling about with a screwdriver (and sometimes a hammer) before incomprehensibly self-resurrecting, having spoiled my weekend. They were equipped with a shared five-and-aquarter inch drive with an operating system so primitive on it that it was like watching an arthritic elderly uncle trying to tie his own shoelaces. We watched with interest first thing

in the morning as the machines creakingly went through the dancing ritual, almost like a tango, start, stop, start again, pause for a bit, and green incomprehensible gibberish unrolled like seaweed on the screen. Eventually, this appeared. E: This obviously meant something to the machine since thereafter it sat back, the colon winking smugly, folded its arms and waited for further instructions like a middle aged man in a dress shop. It then required alphanumeric text, of staggering precision (why does it really matter whether the space bar is pressed or not?) and any typographical errors were met with mutinous lack of co-operation. The girls that I taught were, on the whole, remarkably patient, since it seemed to take most of the lesson to actually fire the machinery up – rather like paying for a driving lesson in a car that has trouble starting. The machine seemed to have little further use for the floppy, which had its own little case and was dutifully locked away for safe keeping. Years later, I remember one of my students attempting to load a CD into the vertically mounted five-and-a-quarter inch floppy drive. The ancient hardware splintered it with crackling efficiency, spitting brightly coloured fragments all over the floor. When the three and a half inch ones came out, we exchanged a Morris Minor for a Ferrari. It had a little thingy on it in the bottom left hand corner which could be pushed in and out with a thumb which had something to do with what the manufacturer grandly called 'write-protection'. Opening it revealed a small square that one could look through. It took me years to figure out how it worked. It wasn't really floppy at all, disappointingly, but came in a robust little black plastic case that fitted nicely into the top pocket. If dropped, it often failed to work

for no discernible reason. But, goodness me, when it did work, it was fast. It seemed as if it had just successfully auditioned for the cast of 'Blade Runner'. Disappointingly, it seemed only capable of storing about five documents, but, hey, everybody had some in their desk drawer, and it was fun trying to find the right one when they'd been labelled and mislabelled so many times. Next, they bought me a hard drive. It was the size of a concrete cinder block, and it said 20Mb on it, which seemed more data storage than required by the Library of Congress. It really was able to store lots more stuff, as long as you had the patience to sit in front of the machine

while it said 'now insert disk 25....' Early versions of Office software came on over thirty disks...It took a while. However did we all find the time. In the future, when we carry our entire virtual lives on thought-controlled implants, we might come across a USB stick which had fallen out from behind an old desk drawer. Perhaps we might use it to prop up a wobbly chair. 13

INSIGHT T

oxic relationships can not only disturb your mental health but also your physical health. To know what toxic relationships exactly are and the different ways to deal with it, read on... Handling any kind of relationship is a difficult task, be it the relationship with parents or with your partner. The reason behind this is the basic difference between the nature of people in general. Every person has his own point of view and way of thinking, it can be similar to other people on some issues but it does differ on many aspects. It is then when conflicts occur. Some people can adjust and respect the other person's point of view however, some people cannot or rather do not respect others' views and thinking, that is when things like toxic relationships develop. You must have got an idea about what a toxic

ic x To

relationship is. The following are some signs of toxic relationship which will help you to get rid of the question, how to identify toxic relationships.. What is a Toxic Relationship? The simple definition of 'toxic' is something that can damage something. Toxic relationships are similar, the sufferer is troubled mentally and in some cases, even physically. Unlike most other unhealthy relationships, a toxic relationship can be present not only between husband and wife, but even between parents, colleagues or bosses. One person in the relationship always tries to make the other person look inferior, whether in private or in front of everyone. Not just that, toxic people have constant mood swings, one moment they will be too good with you and the other moment, they will insult you for nothing! The sufferer ends up feeling guilty, dependent and needy. Nor are they just rude but also very good controllers. Most of the times they are sweet-talkers, charming people with their communication skills, keeping them 14

glued so that they do not leave them. The toxic people are dependent on their partners but they won't ever show it, however they can occasionally blame them for ignoring them, accusing them of being self-centered. In case of personal relationships, a toxic person might give threats of withdrawing his/her love or even absconding from the person. Another significant quality seen in toxic people is the quality of making constant demands, demand for attention, love, materialistic things etc.

the time about their needs and sorrows and are least interested about what the other person feels or does. • Toxic people are very possessive and might try to isolate the other person from his family. • One cannot share things with a person with such traits. • As stated earlier, toxic people make

The controlling trait of their behavior is very significant. First they will take small decisions for you, and if you do

not oppose them, they will take all the decisions for you, making you feel like a doormat. They can even get aggressive to make people listen to them. Given below are some signs of a toxic relationship.. Toxic Relationship Signs • Toxic people are dissatisfied and unappreciative about anything the other person does.

• They are very self-centered, they will talk all

others feel stupid and unimportant all the time.

•A toxic person will blame the other person for every wrong thing, he will also expect only you to change and make efforts to make the relationship work.

How to Get Out of a Toxic Relationship Communication is the key to almost every relationship problem. If you are unfortunately in a toxic relationship, try talking to your partner or whoever the toxic person is. Be gentle and try not to hold that person responsible for everything, even if he is. Make it clear that you would only continue the relationship only if he is ready to accept your space and individuality. In such a kind of relationship the toxic person generally does not accept his mistakes and tries to blame everything on the other person, however a second chance should be given. However, if things do not change even after giving a chance, it is better to end that relationship as the person might pretend to be kind and respectful, but it won't last long, this can lead to a vicious cycle, making it more difficult to come out of. This was all about toxic relationships. Now that you know all about this unhealthy relationship, take steps to get out of it or help anyone else who might be suffering due to this kind of a toxic relationship.

INSIGHT Massage and Spa Services in Kuwait George Thomas

M

assage and spa service is a very liberating and rewarding experience for all the tired and worn out souls used to the daily grind. Moreover, the health benefits derived from positive feelings occurring out of a proper massage and spa package is unquestionable. There are even specific kinds of massage and spa services that can actually trim one down by a size or two, which is greatly beneficial for people who are overweight and hate doing physical activities. But while the trend on massage and spa is becoming a global phenomenon, the individual should also be aware that massage and spa services are very personal and it involves a lot of technicalities. It is common these days for spa services, even the up market ones, to advertise that they provide traditional Indian massage and Indian spa therapy or commonly called Ayurvedic treatments. This is because Ayurvedic medical system, which is over 4000 years old, is becoming globally accepted as a top-notch alternate medical system due to its holistic approach integrating the body, mind and spirit; and lot of health, spa and massage operators are taking undue advantage of Ayurveda’s global acceptance.

one. How many of the masseurs can really talk about functionality of various massages in relation to a human body. From my experience in living in different parts of the world; Brazil, London, Hong Kong, Dubai, Kuwait etc spa and beauty services are major money-spinners. They will deliver the result if one gets services from the right person and the right products are used. Individuals should keep in mind that spa and massage services are very personal which affects ones health, and health equates to wealth. Hence make an informed choice.

The truth is that, many are unaware that Ayurvedic massage or Indian massage takes years to master and most of the spa centres, including the top ones located in star hotels, have Ayurvedic massage therapists who have no idea about its functionalities. To get a job in these salons or spas as an Indian massage therapist, the only requisite is that, you need to be an Indian and should have a certificate showing that training has been done for a week or two. How many masseurs can tell the difference between Ayurvedic, Deep tissue, or Sports massage? How many masseurs can tell the difference between relaxant oil and stimulant oil? The massage oil that should be used on a diabetic person should not be used on an arthritic person; oil that should be used on an obese person is not suitable for a lean 15

Al Ardhah

The men’s “sword” dance Claudia Farias

T

he music and dance of Saudi Arabia find their roots in the chants and melodies of poets and singing swordsmen of the country’s ancient Bedouin past. Each region has its own style of music and dance, but the men’s sword dance, Al Ardhah, is probably the most familiar and is recognized both nationally and internationally in its association with Saudi Arabia. Considered the dance of the Najd, or central region of the vast desert kingdom, it shares some features with the ayyalah of the United Arab Emirates in that it uses singers, dancers, and a narrator/poet. Long ago, it was a war dance, and women participated by holding swords to encourage the men to show their strength and courage in battle. Today, it is performed at important ceremonies, but women are no longer normally present either as spectators or participants. Men carrying swords stand shoulder to shoulder in two long lines that face each other, normally toward the north and south. On the eastern and western sides, another two facing lines of men hold drums (tubul). At the center of one of the lines of swordsmen, one man holds a flag. Also positioned near the middle is the poet/narrator who begins by 16

singing a verse or a short melody (horabah) to prepare the men for battle, and that verse is echoed by the chorus of men who repeat it. After several repetitions of the horabah, the drummers begin to beat out the slow, stately rhythm, and finally the dance begins, with the lines taking turns, advancing and retreating. The flagman accompanies the leader (usually a prince or other dignitary or guest of honor) forward to the middle of the square so that his dancing is showcased. The dance sometimes lasts for hours with each dancer having the opportunity to show his personal ability but all the while being part of the group. Prominent members of the royal family of Saudi Arabia have regularly been seen joining

the dance at important public events in the kingdom. In recent years, the current king (who was then Crown Prince Abdullah) and his brothers, Defense Minister Prince Sultan and Prince Abdul Majeed, the Governor of Medina, joined their countrymen in gesturing high with their flashing swords, much to the delight and enthusiastic applause of onlookers. Indeed, in 1931, wealthy and prominent Chicago philanthropist Charles R. Crane was the first American to officially visit the newly formed Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He was intrigued when the son of King Abdul Aziz (often simply called Ibn Saud) performed in his honor.

THE TEN MOST DECADENT DICTATORS

revolving gold statue, pink champagne and a 'pleasure brigade' of nubile retainers all are what they spent public funds on while their people suffered. These men and sometimes their families agonized over how best to spend their ill-gotten wealth. Dear readers,I present to you the world ten most decadent dictators. Happy reading! Henroy

I

di Amin, President of Uganda, 1971-1979. The self styled "Lord of all the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the sea " and "King of Scotland" awarded himself the VC, or Victorious Cross, and CBE, or Conqueror of the British Empire. He also spent millions on a super -lavish lifestyle - maintaining a over 30 mistresses as well as five wives and fathering at least 43 children. A typically mod-capped project was the creation of a personal bodyguard of bagpipe-playing 6ft 4in Scotsmen.

J

oseph Stalin, Leader of the Soviet Union, 19221953. The Gardener of Human Happiness and Brilliant Genius of Humanity was celebrated in his lifetime by thousands of stylized statues and monuments erected across the Soviet Union- many of which were moved or destroyed in later "de-Stalinisation" drives. He also had a taste for palaces, booze and cigars and preferred to travel by armoured plated private train with a Tsarist court style entourage.

N

im Jong-il. 'Dear Leader' of North Korea since 1994.The son of the Communist State's "Great Leader" Kim Jong-il has super expensive tastes with 17 palaces, and collections of hundreds of cars and about 20,000 video tapes. On one state visit to Russia, he reportedly had live lobsters airlifted daily to his armoured private train. He is believed to spend around $650,000 a year on Hennessy VSOP cognac and maintains an entourage of young lovelies known as "Pleasure Brigade"

erdinand Marcos, President of the Philippines. 1965-1986. The second World war freedom fighter turned kleptocrat, secreted billions of Dollars in overseas accounts. His wife Imelda, however was the big spender, leaving 888 handbags and 1060 pairs of shoes in the Malcanang Presidential Palace when the family fled mob justice after Marcos was deposed. Her pricier purchases included the $51million Crown Building and $61million Herald centre in New York and art by Michelangelo and Botticelli.

icolae Ceousescu, President of Romania, 1967-1989. The "Geniul din Carpati" ,or Genius of the Carpathians, was congratulated (by telegram) by Salvador Dali on his excesses, which included his use of a kingly scepter. Despite an official salary of just $3,000, he found the cash for 15 palaces, a superb car collection, yachts, fine art and bespoke suits. Tens of thousands of homes were demolished to make space for his 1,100-room, 480 chadelier palace of the Parliament in the capital, Bucharest.

ohammed Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Persia, 1941-1979. The "King of Kings" "Sun of the Aryans" was reported to have spent a whooping sum of $100million on celebrations for the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian monarchy in 1971, serving breast of peacock on Limoges china to dignitaries in a 160-acre tent city at Persepolis- close to poor villages. His superb collection of sport cars can be seen at National Car Museum of Iran, alongside custom models by Mercedes Benz and Porsche for his son, the Crown Prince.

F

obutu Sese Seko, President of Zaire, 1965-1997. Siphoning his country’s wealth into Swiss bank accounts was a specialty of the "All Powerful Warrior" whose personal fortune was estimated at $5billion in 1984- then equivalent to country’s national debt. Mobutus extravagances included palaces and pink champagne, yachts and shopping trips to Paris by chartered Concorde. His second wife Bobi Ladawa rivaled Imelda Marcos as a compulsive spender with a reported 1,000 - dress wardrobe.

uharto, President of Indonesia, 1967-1998. The former bank clerk embezzled more money than any other leader in history, according to Transparency International. In 1999, Time Asia put his family wealth at $15billion. Playboy son "Tommy" was the biggest profile spender lavishing money on cars and clothes and buying a majority stake in Lamborghini before a conviction for murder in 2002. His daughter "Tutut" meanwhile spent $100,000 on chartering one shopping flight to the US.

aparmurat Niyazov, The President for life and

"Turkmenbashi", or Father of all Turkmen, was at the centre of an awesome cult of personality. His vanity projects included, a $6million revolving gold plated statue of himself in the Country's capital, Ashgabat. He shifted around $3billion to overseas accounts,

eneral Sanni Abacha, military dictator of Nigeria from 17 November 1993 to 8 June 1998. The General and his family was implicated in wholesale looting of Nigeria coffers. The extent of his venality seems to have surpassed even that of more notorious late Mobutu Sese Seko. It was estimated that the embezzlement of public funds and corruption proceeds amounted to $4billion. The higher figure represents about 10% of Nigeria’s annual income from oil over five years. The sum includes monies allegedly derived from systematic misappropriation of funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria and bribes received from foreign companies.

HEALTH

A Woman’s Guide to Men’s Health Find out what you need to know to help the man in your life stay fit When was the last time your husband had a checkup? If you can't remember, you're certainly not alone. Bring up a visit to the doctor, and you quickly find out that most men would rather help you shop for jeans than set foot in a clinic. In fact a poll showed that 92 percent of women said that the only way their husband goes to the doctor is if you nag, nag, nag or make the appointment and take him there yourself. Another research found that guys who consider themselves "macho" are 50 percent less likely to seek preventive health care. Men aren't as used to seeing their doctors as regularly as women are. A lot of men are terrified of their mortality. They think if they go to the doctor, they'll find something wrong." But the key to living a long, healthy life is catching early anything that might be wrong. Men are notorious for waiting too long to see their physician. A lot of what happens in our bodies takes place silently, so while he may think he's just putting his head in the sand, he's really digging a huge hole for himself. So it's up to you to help the men take charge of their well-being. Step one: knowing what they need to be concerned about. Here's a guide to some of the main issues he may be facing over the years.

In His 30s

With those crazy 20-something days behind him, he may not run as fast, feel as strong or recover as quickly as he used to. Starting at age 30, our body physically starts to age and we see a decline in maximum heart rate and muscle. The good news is that regular exercise and a healthy diet can significantly counter the aging process, and the earlier you start, the better. Here's what else he needs to do to keep himself fit:  Get an idea of his baseline. Even just a handful of checkups in his 30s can go a long way toward keeping him healthy for the next half-century. Establishing a good relationship with a doctor now and knowing where he stands on key heart disease and diabetes screenings will help the doctor better detect any noteworthy changes in years to come.  Know his family history. Heart disease is 22

probably the furthest thing from his mind, but if his father, mother, aunt or uncle had a heart attack at a young age (before 60 for a man, 70 for a woman), he may also be at risk. Cardiovascular disease (including heart disease and stroke) accounts for more than half of all deaths in men, so it's never too early to get heart healthy and know your risk factors. Numerous studies have shown that even teenagers may have atherosclerosis (plaque deposits in the linings of the arteries), so he may already be developing a major heart attack risk. Also, make sure he tells the doctor if he has a family history of diabetes, high cholesterol or colon cancer. If any of these run in his family, he should be screened before he turns 40.  Get vaccinated. If he's never had chicken pox or gotten the vaccine, now's the time. Many people over 40 today have already been exposed, and their kids are vaccinated, but there's still this group of 30-

somethings in the middle who've missed ou. Adult chicken pox can lead to complications like pneumonia, so he should ask his MD for the shot now. He should also make sure his tetanus shot is current (you need one every 10 years) and get an annual flu shot.  Make exercise a habit. Work and family are probably eating into his time now more than ever, but being active is crucial to staying heart-healthy, staving off weight gain and keeping disease-causing belly fat in check. So encourage him to keep it in his weekly planner—whether it's jogging around the local track, joining a health club or regularly shooting hoops with his friends.  Do a below-the-belt check. Younger men are at a higher risk for testicular cancer (peak ages are between 18 and 35), so encourage your man to do a monthly lump check and stay on guard. Testicular cancer is 95 percent curable when it’s caught early.

June 2010

In His 40s

This is when many men really begin to feel the signs of impending age— especially if they've been ignoring their health up to now. In the 40s we begin to see a marked increase in weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes and physical issues like back problems. But don't despair. You can easily knock 20 years off your age if you take the right measures. Encourage him to begin here.  Make his checkup an annual affair. Now is when we really need to start keeping an eye on things like diabetes, heart disease and cancer, especially if there's a strong family history. It's also a good time for him to talk to his doctor about a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test, which checks PSA levels in the blood. If they're elevated, it may indicate prostate cancer.  Deflate the spare tire. By their 40s, men are much more likely to have belly fat, which can signal metabolic syndrome, a precursor to diabetes and heart disease. A bigger belly can be a sign of inflammation, which is linked to so many lifethreatening conditions. The danger zone is a waist size that's over 40 inches.  Stock up on healthier fare. Around age 40, your body isn't as able to get rid of the fat, extra calories and artificial ingredients it doesn't need. Foods to avoid: those high in saturated fats, trans fats, simple sugars, syrups (like high-fructose corn syrup) and non-whole grains (white bread and rice).  Stay social. This is often a time of intense career focus, so some of his buddies from his youth are likely to slip off his radar. After their schooldays are gone, many men have a lot of trouble forming new deep friendships. Think of it as more than just finding someone to watch sports with; loneliness may increase health risks Men without a strong circle of friends and family have double the death rate from heart attacks and twice the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, so it’s crucial for him to stay connected to his pals.

In His 50s

For many men, these 10 years are a transition period—if they're not taking steps to stay healthy, they're really feeling it by the end of this decade. You need to step things up to keep feeling young. Here's what he needs to do to keep up the smooth sailing.  See the eye doctor. If he hasn't already made a trip to the ophthalmologist, now's the time to start.  Watch for nighttime bathroom runs. Many 50-somethings are starting to have signs of

an enlarged prostate, which often means more frequent urination with more urgency. Encourage him to talk to his doctor about getting his PSA levels checked yearly, although there's some controversy over how often and aggressively they need to be monitored. And those with a higher risk (men with a first-degree relative who was diagnosed with prostate cancer before 65 should take extra precautions).  Check the plumbing. It is recommends that all adults with average risk factors get screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50. Certain risk factors, including having a family history of colorectal polyps or cancer, warrant screening younger (usually 10 years before the age at which your relative was diagnosed). Most colorectal cancers develop from growths called polyps in the colon or rectum. Colon cancer screening is crucial so that the polyps can be detected and removed these before they turn cancerous.  Don't ignore warning signs. In many cases, what seems like bad indigestion is actually the beginnings of a heart attack. "In your 50s, you're much more likely to have symptoms of heart disease. These can include a pressure or tightness in the chest when you exert yourself that lasts longer than a few minutes or goes away with rest and returns; shortness of breath; nausea; and discomfort in areas like the back, arms, neck, jaw or stomach. If you're having pain that's more severe or different from anything you've had before, or have a family history of heart disease, call your doctor right away. By now he should also be getting a full workup yearly that includes blood tests to check cholesterol and triglyceride levels. If he's having symptoms, the doctor will order an echocardiogram and a stress test. Some patients with risk factors may also benefit from a coronary calcium scan which measures the buildup of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries as well as carotid artery imaging an ultrasound that checks for narrowing and stiffening of the arteries.  Supplement with fish oil. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like salmon, tuna, trout and mackerel, have many health benefits, from lowering blood pressure to helping brain function and preventing macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness. But since experts say you have to eat fish at least twice a week to get the benefits, it may be easier to pop a fish or krill-oil pill. Ask your doctor which brands he recommends.  Hit the weights. Aerobic exercise, like swimming and walking, remains crucial to keeping weight in check and cardiovascular benefits high. But regular strength training also becomes more important as

muscle mass begins to decline and joints become creakier. By the 50s, there’s not as much spring in your joints. Your muscles can compensate to an extraordinary degree, but only if they are strong. Resistance exercises with machines, dumbbells or resistance bands can help build more lean mass and protect the joints.

In His 60s and Beyond

Research shows that people in their 60s and 70s are markedly happier than at other points in their lives. Avoid chronic disease and he can expect to reap the rewards of healthy living if he's paid attention to diet, exercise and preventive medicine for the past few decades. But it's still never too late to start.  Keep up the exercise. Senior doesn't mean sedentary. If he's not strength training yet, he should start now. You can build high quality muscle mass through your 60s. By your 70s, it's more about living off what you've already built, like a retirement fund. Aerobic exercise also counts. He should consider doing some form of interval training, mixing bursts of high intensity with moderate intensity. A recent study found that people who did this type of exercise for 40 minutes a week had twice the fitness gains as those who did a steady-pace run for 150 minutes a week. Interval training also helps keep your metabolism up.  Get on Facebook. Study after study shows that seniors who are most socially connected live longer and have a lower risk of Alzheimer's. Facebook is a great way to link up with old friends and find new ones. If he's not a fan of new media, help him get involved in other community groups.  Take some D. Many doctors advise that all adults take D supplements, but older adults in particular are at risk of a deficiency, which can raise their odds of heart disease, cancer, weak bones and even memory loss. Vitamin D is largely made by the body as a result of sun exposure, but many older adults aren't getting out in the sun that much. Guidelines call for at least 400 IU of D daily for adults ages 51 to 70, and 600 IU for those who are older, but experts advise taking as much as 800 to 1,000 IU for optimum benefits.  Look and listen. Eyesight and hearing can really start to wane now, which can be dangerous. Declining hearing and vision levels can often lead to falls and injury, causing fractures and potentially serious health issues. In fact, a third of all seniors report falling each year—it’s the leading cause of death from injury among those 65 and older—and two-thirds of those who fall will fall again within 6 months. Make sure he gets a hearing, vision and balance test at his annual visit. 23

Foods That Fight Pain Superfoods that ease the ache

A

healthy diet doesn’t just help you fend off obesity—it can also help your body function at optimal capacity. While an ideal intake of the perfect foods won’t keep you 100 percent free from sickness, eating well can work as a preventive measure against various types of bodily ills, aches and pains. Your best bet in the battle against body pangs, from migraines to muscle soreness: Consume foods that are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties. Here are five smart foods that fight pain.

Food that fights … belly-ache

for migraines. One study found that the antiinflammatory compounds in olive oil suppress the same pain pathway as ibuprofen. Antioxidants found in olives have been shown both to raise HDL (good) cholesterol and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, making olive oil a doubly potent protector against cardiovascular disease.

Eat This!: A small scoop of tuna salad A study at the University of Oxford in England found that eating salmon and tuna can speed up the movement of food from your stomach to your intestines, which leaves your stomach calmer and quells bloating. Credit the omega-3 fatty acids found in the fish, which stimulate hormones that regulate food intake, body weight, and metabolism. Tuna also contains selenium, a nutrient that helps preserve elastin, a protein that keeps your skin smooth and tight. The antioxidant is also believed to buffer against the sun (it stops free radicals created by UV exposure from damaging cells). Food that fights … migraines Eat This!: Olive oil and avocados Foods rich in healthy fats, such as olive oil and avocados, help reduce inflammation, a catalyst

Food that fights … skin irritation Eat This!: Flaxseeds These little seeds offer a payload of omega-3 fatty acids, which erase spots and iron out fine lines. In a study, participants who downed about half a teaspoon of o-3s in 6 weeks experienced significantly less irritation and redness, along with better hydrated skin. Beyond flax, salmon is an omega king.

Food that fights … post workout pains Eat This!: Pineapple and papaya Both of these tropical fruits are loaded with bromelain and papain, enzymes that not only help break down proteins for digestion but also have anti-inflammatory properties to speed up your post-workout recovery. Bonus tip: You know what else is a surprising workout food? Chocolate milk. When you drink it in moderation, it can help hydrate you after a sweat session.

Food that fights … sunburn Eat This!: Dark chocolate Favonols, the antioxidants in dark chocolate, reduce roughness in the skin and provide sun protection. In a study, women who drank cocoa fortified with a chocolate bar’s worth of flavanols had better skin texture and stronger resistance to UV rays than those who drank significantly few flavanols.

Black Smokey Eyes Rutuja Jathar

B

lack smokey eyes can be the biggest show stopper when they are done by using the correct techniques. Read the following article and get a tutorial on how to do smokey eyes...

Smokey eyes have always been the biggest style statement. They are the best idea for a dramatic and sultry eye makeup. They are the perfect thing to do for those scintillating night affairs. Amongst all the smokey eye colors, I love the look of black smokey eyes make up. They bless you with the sexy look to die for! Remember Avril Lavigne? I think she sports the best black smokey eye look amongst the whole glittering bevy. However, the only thing that can cause a lot of trouble for you to get the black smokey eyes, is the proper color techniques, that are a 'bit' hard to understand for an amateur.

How to do Black Smokey Eyes? The key to get those stunning black smokey eyes, is to blend the color shades really flawlessly. Make sure to blend light base colors with richer dark colors. The basic makeup tools that are required for you to do black smokey eyes are - dark mascara, black, charcoal or kohl eye pencil and various dark shades of eyeliners like dark brown, black, gray, dark gray, light gray etc. Make sure you use matte and powder eyeshadow for contours and strictly avoid the liquid eyeliners. Here are the steps for you to do black smokey eyes, on your own..

Step: 1 It is important to apply a nice primer for keeping your eyelids oil-free. You can use a MAC's paint primer as the base for your eyelids. Now, outline the eye with a dark eye pencil. Make sure that the outline of the upper lid is wider than the lower one. You can also apply the black eyeliner just above the upper lash line, in the middle of the eye. Step: 2 Now, prepare the bottom eyelid. For that, apply a gray or light colored eyeliner and smudge it with the help of a flat brush or a smudging brush. Once you are done with it, apply a little bit of eyeshadow beneath the bottom lash and smudge it too. It will offer you a more dramatic look. Step: 3 Now, apply a light gray or dark beige powdered eyeshadow on the upper eyelid. Make sure you apply it with a sponge applicator, above the crease line. Apply it for about half way to the eyebrows and blend it slightly too. Step: 4 Now, take the charcoal eyeshadow or black eyeshadow and apply it all over the eye with the help of a pointed sponge applicator. Make sure you blend it well with the eye pencil line,

which we are assuming as the base line. Half close the eyes and apply the same color to the creases as well. Step: 5 It is the time to define the outer corners of the eye. For that, create a horizontal "V" shape. Remember that the pointed end of this "V" shape will serve as an apparent shape of your eye. Now take a medium sized soft round brush/flat brush and blend the eyeshadow neatly on both the eyelids. Step: 6 Reapply the contour colors with a sponge. The more you apply it, the darker shade will you get. Now, dab face powder under the eyebrows for the makeup to look natural. Lastly, outline the inner contour of the eyes with a kohl eyeliner and use dark mascara to finish the look of the black smokey eyes. You can also use an eyelash curler for the eyelashes to appear long and thick. To highlight your black smokey eyes, always wear minimum makeup. So, just wear a strong blush and light lip gloss and you are ready to allure every person who looks at you! Well, it was quite easy. Wasn't it? As a parting tip, I would advise you to practice these tips for black smokey eyes well, before trying them for a major event. 27

INTERVIEW / DOCTOR

Hind Al-Nahedh is one of

life’s busy people. Having graduated from Kuwait University with a degree in Mass Communication, her work took her deeper into the public relations, marketing and telecommunications sectors and, more specifically, to VIVA where she currently holds the title of Social Media & Integrated Marketing Manager. Beyond the office, Hind has developed a variety of social and business contacts through her membership of organizations as diverse as The Kuwait Friendship Society and the Kuwait Public Relation Association. She is even a member at Toastmasters! As you might suspect, it has proved very difficult to catch Hind for an

"Social Media ...

interview … but we Is the new inbox & web managed to do just that and were pleased to meet someone who is not just a successful young Kuwaiti businesswoman, but someone who at the same time has an endearing personality and is a happy and dedicated mother with a passion for cooking, technology, and lifestyle…

3.0 is the future"

Jameel Arif Social Media is quite a new concept and especially so for Kuwait. How did you arrive upon your Position? Yes, it is indeed a relatively new concept. We live in a wired world with social media being an integral part of it, and the world of social media is being shaped, and reshaped, every day. Social media relates to the conversation and interaction between people online, where media can be defined as digital words, sounds & pictures which are typically shared via the internet and whereby the value can be cultural and societal. We, at VIVA, felt that this concept is very much in alignment with our values and we decided to adopt it wholeheartedly. To achieve this, I attended several training and workshops abroad. One particularly memorable event was hosted in Amsterdam, where big brands from around the globe (such as Sun Technologies, Dell, Telenor and Dow Jones) shared their experiences and views.

42

I am glad that the Management at VIVA supported and recognized the impor tance

of this new concept, and that they created “Social Media” as an official department within the company. And, of course, I am particularly excited to be the first Kuwaiti to handle such a position in a telecom company.

and the United States are my most beloved destinations.

Who, or what, are your influences?

What tools could you not live without?

There are a couple of my colleagues at work who particularly influence me in my daily life, but I believe that everyone is worth knowing, regardless of age, gender, shape or colour. As a result, I find that I am influenced by lots of different people that I encounter.

The Internet, and my Visa Card!

What ring tone do you currently use? I’m not using a ring-tone at the moment, as my mobile phone is on vibration mode! I have to do that because I am busy most of the time, but I ensure that I regularly check it because I cannot live without the many different applications which I have on my phone. Do you have a favourite travel destination? It’s difficult to single out just one and, although I like the Far East and have travelled most of it, I would probably say that Spain, Holland,

Are you an early bird or a night owl? I would say that I’m both!!

Do you have a favourite gadget? I guess I must be a techno-junkie because, next to my Blackberry, my favourite new toy is an iPad. What sports do you play? I enjoy Pilates, but I also like to jog and swim. Oh, and as you might expect from a technojunkie, I also like to play Wii Sports. Can you tell us about your childhood memories? I have a plenty of good memories from my childhood, but most interesting are of me playing music with my father. My mom was my idol. She was a workaholic. I learnt the real meaning of hard working and housewife from her. My father has influenced me on

my language, openness, and on discussion on almost any subject. I remember I used to subscribe to National Geographic magazine when I was 10. I also was fond of writing penpal letters and getting to know people from everywhere. Who do you see as a role model, and why? Without a doubt, I would say Queen Rania, because I believe she has most of the qualities a woman would love to have. She harnesses openness and transparency, and has the right mentality for the current generation. What motivates you? Basically, I am motivated by challenges. Having a shift in my career is motivation in itself, and challenges motivate me to do more, and better. And there are certain people who motivate me, too. Is there something you never forget to do before going to bed? Absolutely – I always make sure all my gadgets are on charge. Then I turn off the lights and hug my iPad for some bedtime reading. What do you like most about your job?

What are your personal goals? I am pleased with the way my career has developed, and I acknowledge that It wasn’t easy for a foreign investor to have employed me. Consequently, I had lots of challenges to meet and I am happy that I have been successful in achieving all their targets. But looking ahead, I would like to get a higher degree in the near future and to maintain a leading position in the communications world. What type of food you like the most? My favourite is Indian but, in general, I am fond of spicy Asian dishes. What do you do on a day off? Cooking! Plus I like to have fun with my family and to treat myself. 44

As I mentioned earlier, I thrive on being challenged and it’s the challenges that I love the most! I am fuelled by the amount of information and knowledge I encounter every day, and the opportunity I get to meet different people and to interact with my second family @ VIVA is indescribable. What is the best Birthday present you have ever received? I guess that the best present was one of the latest, which was one to which I treated myself! I decided to go to Dubai last May 5th and was privileged to meet with Husni Khuffash,

the Google Regional Manager for UAE, Lower Gulf and Levant. Meeting him was really a wonderful experience. So I have to choose that experience ... plus the priceless wishes from my online friends, with an appreciation video clip on my wall - I didn’t see that coming, but I sure enjoyed sharing it! What message would you like to give to our readers & to aspiring PR students? I would offer two messages. Firstly to focus! - Focus on the new freedom and opportunities generated by the virtual world. It is an amazing fact that Kuwait is ranked No.1 for online Arabic Content, which is a good indicator on which to lead. Secondly, I would also like to advise people to always “Dress for Success”. In conclusion, do you have a message for us at CityPages magazine? Shine On!

FASHION & TRENDS Stella McCartney, Jean Paul Gaultier and – especially – Ralph Lauren prepared a strong dose of denim for their spring summer 2010 collections. Even though the head-to-toe denim look is usually a fashion “don’t”, it’s no longer a shame to wear it this way (at least this season). I wouldn’t recommend mixing different denim styles and colors but it’s also very fashionable today so I think we should all get out our denim jackets, shirts, vests, shorts and skirts from the darkest nooks of our wardrobes. How to wear denim in spring summer 2010?

Denim on Denim – Spring Summer 2010 Fashion Trends

One of the most important spring 2010 denim trends is denim jackets peeking out from underneath blazers (very fashionable!) and leather jackets. This layered look dates back to 1990s’ and I’m sure Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth have probably worn it somewhere in Beverly Hills 90210.

Even though it doesn’t look too elegant, ripped, torn and patched denim is going to rule spring 2010 streets around the world. It used to be a huge trend not long ago so you probably won’t need to buy a new pair of trendy ripped jeans. This type of jeans trend dates back to 1980’s so this is where you can get your inspiration from (and from celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Halle Berry and Nicole Richie who have been sporting this trend).

A Family With Designs Paul Tunbridge

I

sharya’s mélange of luxurious international vitality is proven, season after season, that a unique fusion of regal Indian tradition with contemporary aesthetics will outlast the transience of high fashion and its passing trends. And it’s all kept within the family as Radhika and Gauri Tandon, the sisters-in-law team behind the cultural and fashionable phenomenon that is Isharya, continue to combine their passions for family, heritage and culture to create one-of-a-kind, eminently wearable jewelry statements in the same way they have done since the conception of Isharya in 2004. Set apart by innovative styles, handcrafted pieces and plush materials, Isharya has quickly become one of the most recognized and internationally-accepted Indian-inspired fashion jewelry brands of the modern age. Gauri grew up in New Delhi, India, but she made frequent trips to Europe while she was in her formative years before marrying and moving to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Radhika lived in at least three countries before she settled in California. They were each heading down much different paths prior to the official launch of Isharya. Gauri, a graduate from the London School of Economics, had recently relocated with her family from Los Angeles to Mumbai, while Radhika was a practicing intellectual property litigation attorney, living with her family in the San Francisco bay area. The two sister-in-laws shared a passion for fashion and jewelry, and had even been custom designing fine jewels from India for their friends and family, but although they enjoyed getting custom jewelry made for themselves, the idea 46

of designing jewelry as a full time profession was not in the cards. It wasn’t until a couple of years after Radhika married Gauri’s younger brother-in-law that they realized there was a void in the market for Indian-inspired high quality costume jewelry. The concept of Isharya sprang to life as the two girls started working together on the brand. (The name was inspired by their common passion for family, and was created by combining names of their children – Ishaan, Armaan, and Arya). What had started as a hobby quickly took off and became a serious business venture in 2007 when their collection began to turn the heads of established retailers and fashion magazines from around the world. Proving themselves to be true entrepreneurs, Radhika quit her job at the law firm to work full-time on Isharya, and

the girls focused on turning their dream into a reality; hoping that, one day, Isharya would become an international household brand. Radhika and Gauri are known for combining unique materials and techniques to create standout, statement pieces. Radhika and Gauri use wood, enamel, resin, clear and colored glass, and druzy agate stones and 18k gold plated to create their one of a kind pieces. Both the resin and wood pieces are top sellers, as is the signature 18k gold plated Filigree work. With daily inspiration taken from their families’ rich cultures, Radhika and Gauri design their collections based on the innate influences of Indian royalty, on the international Art Nouveau style of the early 20th century, and on encounters from their extensive travels. It is their seamless blending of Western and Eastern trends that has encouraged the regal inspiration and ingenious craft of Isharya to evolve over the years, combining modern materials with historic style and re-invented ancient Indian techniques. Gauri and Radhika are always eager to discuss general concepts and agree on the styles that will shape each collection. Then Gauri works with the design and prototype team to realize their concepts. When asked to name their favorite designers, they reel off the names of Dior, Marchesa, Prada, and Chanel. From their own collections, they opt for a floating bib necklace and an orbit druzy bib necklace as their favorite pieces. So who, typically, will wear their pieces? The woman who wears Isharya jewelry is strong, confident and fashionable, but the Isharya Collections are designed to feature a range of jewelry that will appeal to all tastes, whether the customer’s individual preference is for a huge elaborate statement bib necklace or a dainty pair of ornate filigree earrings. Isharya jewelry has been worn by some of the world’s most famous ‘A’-list celebrities, with a client list that includes Drew Barrymore, Eva Longoria Parker, Hayden Panettiere, Hilary Duff, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Jessica Szohr, Linda Evangelista and Lucy Liu. Their pieces have also featured regularly on popular television programs such as Gossip Girls, Ugly Betty and Dirty, Sexy, Money. Already coveted by top stylists, celebrities and notable trendsetters, Isharya’s pieces can be found in over 400 retail and online stores worldwide, including Net-a-Porter, Harrods, Henri Bendel, Neiman Marcus, Harvey Nichols, Liberty, Fenwick and Anthropologie. In Kuwait you will find them at Goji Boutique!

48

Radhika and Gauri refer to themselves as “jewelry entrepreneurs” rather than designers. They suggest that Isharya is merely their point of view but acknowledge that, in order to create a successful brand, you have to be ready to work tirelessly to meet your goal. So what comes next for these jewelry entrepreneurs? They hint playfully at plans to extend their brand beyond jewelry – but then say no more. I guess we’ll just have to wait and watch with eager anticipation!

In memory of and dedication to “Denise”

- See with your heart , hear with your soul -

Ah! Welcome to my world and I to yours, Samurai glider!

And some are born to follow and others shall rise…

And a peculiar man who appeared to be more clever than the rest and the too many once dared asking: “ Walking without any incumbent fear whilst you climb above all the foggy skies of life as if none of them existed, you have mastered so and yet, dare I ask you to name me at once the drive that you secretly withheld but which you shan’t foolish me with ...” . And thus, as skilled as he was in mastering people’s emotions high above in his world bigger than the rest and the too few or so he thought , that clever man could not perceive the engine of life ... a nameless and even more clever driven force indeed was the answer to his pondering thought but which he did not believe in nor could he see .

- Dancing kite -

And fighting is what some choose too but what of this life if one also has to fight on the battlefield of love itself! How many fights in a lifetime shall be enough to conquer one’s peace…?

- Guraida no Bushi And as my eyes lay on the blue lights that magically blend with the whiter sparks invading the room on this windy night , I am now able to unravel your invisible name and see with a smile the true face of that which you are… You are the complete seven notes when played at once, You are here and yet everywhere at the same given moment, You are the equilibrium of the scale you seek and chose by the dark face of anger and fear you have seen, And your heart lays in the east… Yet, time only will ever tell if the miles you travel ever succumb to the thing you are missing…

Life is an adventure, says I to you! For he who shall be able to lose all strings attach and fill his chest with the hope that the journey bequest…shall see and foresee with the eyes of a child and live life truly as a dancing kite in the wind!

- Voyage And The Invisible Hand that pushes the steps we take, had it at once, to make her journey to the land of Bham al Cham in search of the words... the invisible words spoken of by kings and queens and forever inked into the hills which gracefully paved the way to a placeless place that had seen the rise and death of their glory, once spoken of within the entire sphere . Ah! So much beauty for the eyes in so little freedom one always dares to have…

- Here and now – In truth, here is where you are now and here is exactly where you should be, so look no further!

- Il etait une fois… Ah! Sweet magician of sound, in truth, her eyes have seen you and so did you see the light of her,

The man shall stand not by the million prayers rendered by the woman who loves him coupled by a million more by the mother who gave him birth but if he chooses to stand by himself in his heart… what of this love, might I ask you? And in the end, silent even became your sounds but will you ever understand… Yet, a thousand doves now fly for having tried…

- Conversation of a Wiseman The Wiseman touched himself by love as all of us in this lifetime speaks of it and says : “Ah! You by the name of which they call you love …. I have given you more than ever less but never to my own perdition, And my strength you have taken but always was I the strongest, And in the end, matter of it all does it not, for the immensity of the many names behind which you reside I have faced and tasted and sufficient enough is it for me …”

But a shiny trophy was all you ever made out of it … For it is easier to acquire the incomprehensible, than to search for the truth … 49

Why The Bugatti Veyron Costs $1.7 Million

and sends data to the Bugatti service team. It can also operate the navigation system.

The most complicated and technologically advanced supercar in the world turns five years old in 2010. In honor of that birthday, we've decided to revisit some of the Bugatti Veyron's more impressive statistics. This is what $1.7 million buys you. Eight liters, sixteen cylinders, 64 valves, four (just four!) camshafts, four turbochargers, and a "square" bore-to-stroke ratio (86 mm by 86 mm). 1001 hp and 922 lb-ft of torque. At the Veyron's 253-mph top speed, the whole mess consumes 47,000 liters of air per minute — as much air as one man breathes in four days. Former Car and Driver editor Csaba Csere once asked Bugatti development boss Wolfgang Schreiber how the Veyron's engine could be rated at 1001 SAE net horsepower at 6000 rpm for the U.S. but only 987 horsepower (1001 PS) for Europe. Schreiber laughed, saying, "The production engines are all putting out between 1020 and 1040 PS — enough to cover both promises." Above 120 mph in the Veyron's Handling Mode, the car's rear wing acts as an air brake. When the brakes are applied, the wing adjusts itself to a 55-degree angle of attack in just four tenths of a second. This is claimed to provide almost 0.7 G of braking force, or roughly as much as the brakes of an ordinary passenger car. The Veyron's EPA-certified fuel economy is 8 mpg city, 13 mpg highway. At top speed, it achieves three miles per gallon, or 1.4 gallons per minute. The PDA seen here — an HP iPAQ — is included with purchase; it talks to the car's telemetry system via Bluetooth 58

The Veyron's radiator count is the most commonly cited statistic, but that's only because the numbers — and the mental picture of the plumbing that they provide — boggle the mind. The car's ten heat exchangers are divided up as follows: Engine cooling: 4, Air-conditioning: 2, Transmission oil: 1, Engine oil: 1, Differential oil: 1, Air-to-liquid intercooler cooling: 1

The Veyron uses special Michelin PAX tires found on no other car. They were designed specifically for the Bugatti's capabilities and can only be removed from the wheels in France, a process that costs $70,000. The tires themselves cost $17,000 per set. If you cannot find 93-octane (or preferably better) fuel in your area, your Bugatti dealer will detune your engine to run on whatever is available.

Porsche has revealed its most powerful road-going 911 to date: the GT2 RS.

To be built in a limited run of just 500, the new rear-wheeldrive road racer is powered by the latest evolution of its twin-turbo 3.6-litre flat six engine, tuned to deliver a Le Mansgrade 620bhp. That’s a whopping 60bhp more than the standard 911 GT2 — now out of production — and 8bhp beyond the German car maker’s previous most powerful road car, the V10-powered Carrera GT. The so-called Metzger engine — named after the motorsport engineer responsible for its original design — eschews the direct injection of Porsche’s newer 3.8-litre engines for an older, sequential injection system. It also uses the latest Borg Warner turbochargers, producing 1.6bar of pressure instead of the old GT2’s 1.4bar. Drive is fed to lightweight 19in forged alloy rear wheels shod with 335/30-profile tyres through a six-speed manual gearbox from Getrag and a mechanical limited-slip differential backed up by recalibrated stability control.

GADGETS

What the new iPhone may look like While Apple may tinker with the final packaging and design of the final phone, it's clear that the features in this next-generation iPhone are drastically new and drastically different from what came before. Here's the detailed list of our findings: What's new • Front-facing video chat camera • Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)

German Craftsmanship meshed with modern Tech - Brinell’s Purestorage Compact HDD The in Karlsruhe, Germany, located manufacturer of tech goods, Brinell, has now unveiled a collection of portable hard drives that aims to build a global reputation as the classy pinnacle of peripherals. Undoubtedly, this hard drives are made to impress and seamlessly fit the well-appointed modern man.

• Camera flash • Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad) • Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS. • What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack • Split buttons for volume • Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic What's changed • The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound • Aluminium border going completely around the outside • Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution) • Everything is more squared off • 3 grams heavier • 16% Larger battery • Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery 64

Investments ensured stability for banking sector, says kia OBG report to map out country’s privatisation plans

Kuwait, 11 May 2010: The Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) fully supported the government’s request to invest funds into the State’s bourse through the KD 1.5 billion National Portfolio which was one of the measures put in place to cushion the effects of the global economic crisis, according to its Managing Director, Bader M. Al-Sa’ad. Speaking exclusively to Oxford Business Group (OBG), the global publishing, research and consultancy firm, Al-Sa’ad said that Kuwait’s banking sector was stable and enjoyed the backing of a strong, systemic support system, proving the government’s investments was a success. “The government of Kuwait does not want to allow any sort of systemic risk or fear that a major bank in Kuwait might fall,” he said. “The KIA, as a long term investor on behalf of the State of Kuwait, played its part as an investor when called upon, by investing funds into the bourse, which helped stabilise the market and also played a key role in boosting investor confidence.” Al-Sa’ad also had words of praise for the legislative changes which the government brought in during the downturn, saying that laws such as the move to guarantee deposits had helped maintain the banking sector’s solid base. “If you take, for example, our purchase of a stake in Gulf Bank, we viewed it not as an act of rescue but as an investment opportunity,” he told OBG. “All in all, the move was a success and Gulf Bank has rebounded well.” The Report: Kuwait 2011, an in-depth economic guide produced by OBG, will comprise a detailed, sector-by-sector guide for foreign investors, together with a wide range of interviews with the most prominent political, economic and business leaders, such as HH The Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Deputy Premier for Economic Affairs Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah and Central Bank Governor Sheikh Salem AbdulAziz Al Sabah. With the private sector set to take centre stage as the privatisation of Kuwait Airways draws closer, Al-Sa’ad acknowledged that the entire process would be in the spotlight since the government hoped it would pave the way for further projects. He stressed that each component, from the tendering process to the IPO, needed to stand up to scrutiny. “The Kuwait Airways privatisation is significant and is a leading indicator because we hope it will be the first of many that the country undertakes,” he told OBG. “It is therefore vital that the entire process is carried out in accordance with the by-laws put in place and is completely transparent in order for it to be termed a complete success.” Al-Sa’ad also highlighted the importance of identifying the right partner for the airline which, he said, would be key to improving the company’s performance and bringing a balance to the market. “We want to attract a strategic investor who is best able to reorganise and expand the company to make it a strong performer,” he said. “The move should also create equal competition between the other national carriers.” 67
