Dear Readers... Welcome to the November issue of CityPages. This is our eleventh issue, and we’re getting bigger and (I believe) better as each month passes. I hope you agree. The changes we introduced last month were certainly wellreceived, and this month we’ve again been busily filling the pages with the broad mix of articles and features that you tell us you like. Freshlyground is the African band that was catapulted into the spotlight earlier this year when the song “Waka Waka (This time for Africa)”, which they had recorded alongside Shakira, was adopted as the anthem of the FIFA Football World Cup and broadcast around the world. I was thrilled when they agreed to an exclusive interview for CityPages, and am sharing this with all of you inside this issue. Riham Al-Ayyar, who features on our cover, provides an insight into her life as Manager of Communication and Marketing at Wataniya Telecom; and interviews with Lebanese singer Dalida and French designer Jerome Olivet complete our round up of conversations for November. Following hot on the heels of last month’s Health and Wellness Special, inside we have included a couple of articles about Diabetes in recognition of World Diabetes Day on November 14th. Families and friends in Britain will have celebrated “Guy Fawkes Day” on November 5th, but does anyone else know what this tradition is all about? Our article inside might help to shed some light and spark some interest. Of course, many of you are now preparing for the seasonal celebrations of fall/winter; for American Thanksgiving on November 25th and for Christmas in December. I am sure you will like this year’s sensational British Christmas postage stamps, which are the subject of another of this month’s feature articles. Once again, we’ve tried to include something for everyone, but I’ll not delay you any longer ... please turn the pages and enjoy. Happy Reading!

ORACLE

It is not an acronym as popularly believed. It is short for San Francisco.

Larry Ellison and Bob Oats were working on a consulting project for the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). The code name for the project was called Oracle (the CIA saw! this as the system to give answers to all questions or something such). The project was designed to help use the newly written SQL code by IBM. The project eventually was terminated but Larry and Bob decided to finish what they started and bring it to the world. They kept the name Oracle and created the RDBMS engine. Later they kept the same name for the company.

Founder Paul Galvin came up with this name when his company started manufacturing radios for cars. The popular radio company at the time was called Victrola.

Compaq This name was formed by using COMp, for computer, and PAQ to denote a small integral object. Corel The name was derived from the founder’s name Dr.Michael Cowpland. It stands for COwpland Research Laboratory.

It was originally named ‘Googol’, a word for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. Why do women’s clothes button from the left while men’s button from the right? I t is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers might adhere to uniform standards for the various features of garments bought by any given group. What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is precisely the opposite of the one for men. If the standard were completely arbitrary, that would be one thing. But the men’s standard would appear to make more sense for women as well. Around 90 per cent of the world’s population is right-handed, and it is easier for right-handers to button shirts from the right. So why do women’s garments button from the left? This is an example in which history seems to matter. When buttons first appeared in the 17th century, they were seen only on garments of the wealthy. At that time it was the custom for rich men to dress themselves and for women to be dressed by servants. Having women’s shirts button from the left thus made things easier for the mostly right-handed

servants who dressed them. Having men’s shirts button from the right made sense not only because most men dressed themselves, but also because a sword drawn from the left hip with the right hand would be less likely to become caught in the shirt. Today, virtually no women are dressed by servants, so why is buttoning from the left still the norm for women?

In economics, a norm, once established, resists change. At a time when all women’s shirts buttoned from the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer women’s shirts that buttoned from the right. After all, women had grown accustomed to shirts that buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. Beyond that practical difficulty, some women might also have found it socially awkward to appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the right, since anyone who noticed would assume they were wearing men’s shirts.

Lesson of Life There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away. The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall. When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen. The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. The second son said no it was covered with green buds and full of promise. The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen. The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment.

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life. He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end, when all the seasons are up. If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, fulfillment of your fall. Moral: Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest. Don't judge life by one difficult season. Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come sometime or later.

Wallace & Gromit put their stamp on A Great British Christmas Tradition Paul Tunbridge

They are multi Academy Award winners and global screen stars, and now Wallace and Gromit will make a special appearance in millions of homes worldwide after signing-up to feature on Great Britain’s Royal Mail Christmas stamps, which went on sale on in the UK on November 2nd. The special Christmas issue stamps feature the nation’s favourite animated characters going about their Christmas duties with the 1st Class stamp showing the two posting their Christmas cards. Wallace and Gromit go carol singing on the 2nd Class stamp and dress the Christmas tree on the 60p stamp. As usual, Gromit is left to do the majority of the work, carrying the cards and hauling an unfeasibly large Christmas pudding around on the 97p stamp with his reward being a bone-themed jumper shown on the £1.46 stamp. Like the duo’s award-winning films, the stamps are packed with detail, but with the added challenge of reducing the ‘World of Wallace and Gromit’ down to stamp size. To achieve this, the Royal Mail’s design team worked closely with creator Nick Park and Aardman Animations to devise brand new scenes featuring the pair. The approach to the stamps was similar to how Aardman Animations create a film, with Nick Park drawing scenes and visual jokes involving the characters, before refining the designs so that they would work in a definitive stamp format. Each stamp was then constructed with models, props and background sets - all created especially for the issue. Nick Park, creator of Wallace and Gromit, said; "It’s been such a wonderful honour and a pleasure to work with Royal Mail and to have my characters, Wallace and 10

www.citypageskuwait.com

Gromit, immortalised on their very own stamps. "It was one of the biggest challenges my talented team and I have faced yet - to create memorable Christmas images of the duo - the size of postage stamps. But we knew we’d lick it in the end." Philip Parker, Royal Mail Stamps spokesperson, said; "The process of developing these stamps has been a labour of love for all concerned - but I think it has resulted in one of the finest sets of Christmas stamps

Royal Mail has ever produced.” He continued "Nick and his team’s attention to detail is legendary, but their efforts to bring Christmas with Wallace and Gromit to life on stamps is truly extraordinary. Keen-eyed collectors armed with a magnifying glass will see that the envelope seen being posted on the 1st Class stamp features the actual 1st Class stamp." For almost 50 years the British Royal Mail’s Special Stamp programme has commemorated and celebrated events and anniversaries pertinent to British heritage and life. With an estimated 2.5 million stamp collectors and gifters in the UK alone, and millions more worldwide, each new stamp issue is eagerly awaited and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II approves all British stamp designs before they are printed. The Royal Mail first issued Christmas stamps more than 40 years ago, and every year customers look forward to their Christmas stamps. Like all other stamp issues, the designs used for Christmas stamps have evolved over time. The first edition of Royal Mail Christmas stamps was launched in 1966 with designs selected from more than 5,000 entries in a competition for schoolchildren. Since then, special Christmas issues have included snowy winter scenes, snapshots taken from Raymond Briggs' much-loved Father Christmas Book, traditional Christmas images, stained glass windows, and characters from pantomime. Teaming up with Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park for this year’s Christmas issue has been inspirational. Mr Park's short Wallace & Gromit films The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave, and the full-length feature The Curse of the Were-Rabbit have all won Academy Awards. And now, as Wallace himself might say, “Cracking Christmas Stamps, Gromit!”

Gunpowder, Treason and Plot John MacArthur Every English child is familiar with this little rhyme.

"Remember, remember the fifth of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot." It continues to remind us why, on the night of November 5th, bonfires surmounted by cloth mannequins or "guys" are set alight in every town and village in England accompanied by a blaze of celebratory fireworks. When I was a child, I can still recall having to wear warm, woollen and often quite itchy gloves for the annual display. As a very little boy – our garden was large enough to invite neighbours and friends - I can still recall that my father, an inveterate pyrophiliac, spent all afternoon building a bonfire large enough to roast an ox and all-too-small boxes of fireworks which were bought a few days before were carefully placed out of reach of young, experimental hands. We always augmented the available funds with the proceeds of soliciting ‘pennies for the guy’.The ‘guy’ was often quite an elaborate construction, assembled from newspaper, straw, string and old clothes, with a straw-filled pillowcase for a head and my father’s straw hat from last summer atop it. We hawked our effigy around the village in an old pram, in heated competition with the other boys’ efforts – for some reason girls weren’t allowed – and usually collected enough coppers from an indulgent public to spend on thunderflashes and other, now quite illegal, explosives which we could throw on the bonfire, with ear-splitting and entirely satisfactory results. Subsequently, the home-grown celebrations gave way to large public gatherings which lacked the spice of danger of the garden variety, but the fireworks were a lot more impressive since we’d had to pay to get in. Most of us had no real idea of why we were actually celebrating the burning

in effigy of a four hundred year old man. Looking back, it does seem a little barbaric. So, what was it all about? As happens with wearisome regularity, the whole business boiled down to religion, or, if you prefer, a little mediaeval terrorism inspired by intolerance of the Catholic faith. Ah, religion. I sometimes wonder if it’s the same everywhere – if we don’t much care for the ‘denomination du jour’ we either flee to what we know best or attempt to overthrow the newest and most radical of the newcomers. I sometimes think that we’re mentally and even emotionally a breath away from the Stone Age, since the lessons of history, written laboriously and painfully in the blood and the tears of our ancestors, seem to never take root in our thinking long enough to prevent us from repeating them. The seeds of discontent at the treatment of Catholics in England were first sown in the late 1520s during the reign of Henry the Eighth. Henry had been declared Defender of the Faith by the Pope and had written tracts against the new-fangled German Protestantism. However, dissatisfied with the Pope's refusal to grant him a divorce from Catherine of Aragon so he could marry Anne Boleyn, Henry broke away from the

See of Rome, extinguished all papal power in England, and installed himself as the head of the Church of England. This was followed by the methodically brutal dissolution of the monasteries, which was both grand theft and vandalism of epic proportionsand was instrumental in eroding the power of the Catholic Church in England. In the turbulent years that followed Henry’s death, England swayed back and forth on a theological pendulum for the next eighty years. In the early 17th century, three Catholic gentlemen met in secret in rural England to discuss their troubles. The new king, James I, despite promises of a relaxation in the prevailing anti-Catholic laws, had become even more severe in their prosecution than his predecessor had been.Without a long and involved history lesson, their ranks now swelled to eight men, all prominent, influential Catholics, being no strangers to plots and intrigue, felt the time was right to strike a blow for Rome. The plan

was quite ambitious;to blow up the King and the House of Lords at the next Opening of Parliament. With the monarch, the Prince of Wales and most of his leading ministers dead, the idea was that they would raise a general revolt to return Catholicism to England. Of all the plotters, Guy Fawkes was the most famous, a converted Catholic who fought for Catholic Spain in its war against the Dutch. During his time in Spain, he learned how to use explosives - especially the art of mining and sapping. Effectively, he was a mercenary demolition expert, “a zealot, misled by misguided fanaticism” as one Victorian writer put it.He was out of the country for fifteen years so when he returned to join the plotters in May 1604, no-one would have known him. This anonymity at least initially served him well.He and his fellow conspirators, having rented out a house right beside the Houses of Parliament, managed to get thirty-six barrels of gunpowder into a cellar of the House of Lords to be detonated by Fawkes when all were assembled above. They were betrayed however since a leaked letter was written by a well-wisher to an MP advising him that it might be an idea to call in sick that day. Fawkes was caught red-handed with the tools necessary to fire the powder train. He was brought before the King, found guilty of treason, and tortured, with increasingly precise application of pain and suffering – the English were quite good at this - finally revealing the names of his coconspirators. He was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered, but was so weakened by torture that he did not survive the hanging.

It’s strange, reading this narrative back to myself, since - shamefully similarly violent, dissenting voices, fuelled by fanaticism, are still making themselves heard. Their causes are different, but their motivations are the same, to maim, destroy and murder those whose politics or religious views differ from their own. I wonder why it is, as a species, we seem unable to set our neighbours free in peace and justice to practise their own set of beliefs, whose moral compasses, surprisingly, may not point in a significantly different direction from our own. The United Nations Charter says this. 'We, the peoples of the United Nations, determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, ... to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, ... and for these ends to practise tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours'. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that 'everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion' (Article 18), 'of opinion and expression' (Article 19), and that education 'should promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups.’ Well, at least we’re talking the talk. Perhaps it’s time for mankind to learn to walk the walk. November 16th is the UN’s International Day of Tolerance, when, all over the world, we’re encouraged to practise that most endangered virtue, seeing it from the other guy’s point of view.

The name of the police headquarters is derived from its original location on Great Scotland Yard, a street within Whitehall... The name of the police headquarters is derived from its original location on Great Scotland Yard, a street within Whitehall. According to a 1964 article in The New York Times, the name derives from buildings in the area used to accommodate Scottish kings when they visited English royalty. The original commissioners of the Metropolitan police, Colonel Charles Rowan and Richard Mayne, worked out of a private house at 4 Whitehall Place, which backed onto an open courtyard that came to be known as Scotland Yard.

Why is Winston Churchill’s speech known as the ‘Iron Curtain speech’? In the "Iron Curtain speech" Winston Churchill drew attention to the fundamental split in Europe between the Eastern Bloc and the West, though at that stage (March 1946) there were no formal alliances. He had a fear of another world war that involves fighting against the communist regime and that the so called iron curtain is blocking some of the countries connection to the western countries because of the communist terror.

The first word used to answer the phone was the nautical greeting "ahoy" because the first regular phone system was in the maritime state of Connecticut. Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor, answered with the Gaelic "hoy". But it was Thomas Edison's greeting of "hello," an exclamation of surprise dating back to the Middle Ages, that caught on, and so we answer the telephone today with, "Hello?"

makes the bull react violently as like most mammals, the bull too is colour blind and cannot be affected by the colour of the cloth. When a matador moves a cloth (irrespective of the colour) in front of the bull, it perceives the movement as a threat and is angered, and as a result, reacts violently.

From Design to Reality … Making It Real Jameel Arif

Jerome Olivet, a Designer and Professor of Prospective Design, has worked with large international companies such as Alessi, Thomson, Baccarat, Nissan, RocheBobo and Starck. Some of his creations are in the collections of musea of modern art around the world. In showing “Bionics”, a furniture collection in 2001, he proved that in the modern age design can expand the human emotions. In 2004 Jerome created his own branded collection of fashion accessories with futuristic and functional lines. It is sold today in nearly 20 countries, and shown in several musea of Modern Art (Denmark, New York, Tokyo) as well as the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Chicago. In China, he has collaborated since 2003 with the First Electronics Chinese brand to combine beauty and ergonomics, which remains the ambition of the emotional universe of Jerome Olivet. In 2008 he presented JET HOUSE, a revolution in the world of individual architecture. By its biomorphic design, he created global art. It’s an extreme feeling, the symbol of a new life. In 2010 he has hit the bottle, but in a totally creative way. In this exclusive interview, Jerome spoke to CityPages about his history, his designs and his ambitions, and waxed lyrical about his most recent project… 18

Who are some of your best clients?

From where, exactly, do you originate? I was born in a small village near Paris, France. My parents were greengrocers, and they created new species in large glasshouses. So I was born into a world of flowers: aesthetic and biological. What educational path did you follow? I studied product design, graphic design and architecture in Paris, and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree. Then I immediately started working with Philippe Starck which, at the time, was truly inspirational for me. Can you tell us about your design for the Coca Cola bottle? Sure. The Brief that I received was: “How can a brand like Coca Cola be more contemporary; in its originality. It represents the popular culture; it should show the way, a philosophical revival. That’s why it will take a new technology shape, fascinating and sexy. It'll have to reach women and become an icon for men. More than a bottle, it will be a living being; a new world of fun.” My Design “Mystic” is best viewed in the pictures, but I shall describe it as: “Mystic - surprised by its beauty and intensity. It was created to live an intense and fleeting moment. Its racy style describes a supernatural world that soars skyward. Its skin has a sculpted, unique, and spiritual experience. We discover, in the palm of our hand, soft and aerodynamic forms. Its living surface is shaped by a mysterious and transparent force. It sends to us all the energy and excitement of CocaCola. Its sexy lines and red colour give happiness in 3 dimensions. Both organic shapes intertwine and form an ambiguous and fascinating body. Its loving silhouette ties into truly popular poetry.” How would you define your designs? Like the bottle “Mystic”. My designs are sexy, fascinating, of a unique style, and mystical. In a constantly changing world, I am inspired by

Each client is interesting, particularly if he is not afraid to break codes and create new business. Today the global market is open to all and highly competitive, and it requires us to be just that little bit more clever and creative. technology. Design is a philosophy of life which must describe a world of elegance; it draws the outlines of the future world. Originality and imagination guide my designs and open the way for dreams. Apart from technology, what inspires you while designing? I take inspiration from biology, femininity, and aerodynamics. I have a very positive and bright vision of the future; nothing scares me; I'm here to break through barriers. As such I see myself as a hero of modern times. My pen can do wonders to change the world with simplicity. How did it feel to be honoured in 2008 as Creator of the Year from Paris Capital of Creation? I received the award for my collection of fashion accessories - Leather bags with creatively ergonomic designs. My bags have defined a new luxury. With soft, sensual forms, we live every day with these flexible architectures. With these new objects we become supermen. It was fun, of course, to receive the award, but the goal of my work is to produce a new philosophy and new business. What other awards have you received? I was prizewinner of the Contemporary Furniture Criticism of the International Press in 1999; Nominated at “Le Sommet du Luxe et de la Création” in 2003; Prizewinner with the “VIA Label” for the Innovation in 2004; and again prizewinner of innovation at “Le Sommet du Luxe et de la Création” in 2006. What is your favourite design? The bottle and the logo of Coke! What is your professional goal? To change the world! With design, we are in the very centre of society; inside contemporary culture. We feel the changes in behaviour and anticipate the future. My goal is to have the most ambitious projects in the world. Design has no sex and no border. It is the origin and purpose of globalization.

Most of your clients are into electronics – Is there a reason for that? Electronics is an area where we need to be on top of innovation, and at the pinnacle of style. Customers expect to be amazed and surprised every month, which means it is important to have a clear vision and to watch the changes in society. I see that you list Microsoft as a client. What did you design for them? I worked with Microsoft and Thomson some years ago on a keyboard to connect TV with Internet. At the time it was visionary, and the shape of the object really created a new function. Today it is exhibited in many international museum collections. I continue work with them on other new and amazing products. How long does it usually take for you to convert a concept into a finished design? On average, it takes me around two weeks to create and finalize a project but, of course, that’s after fifteen years of experience in the design world! Today I work on collections to describe a whole universe; clear and powerful. It's easier to communicate and sell. Do you have a message for aspiring young designers? I would urge them to be open to all new influences; to love life and its pleasures. We are the artists of the new century, but we must reinvent our work to build a new world. A young designer must be inspired and not be afraid of the future but say clearly and loudly what they think. And finally, do you have a message for us at CityPages? Continue to be an innovative magazine that sends to the world a positive and aesthetic message; discover new artists and accompany your readers every day in their lives as a friend.

Jameel Arif

For Freshlyground, the smell of success is as sweet as the coffee! Just a few months ago there was a cheerful song that everyone was humming or singing. "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" was a song recorded by Colombian singer Shakira, featuring South African band Freshlyground. It was the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was performed by Shakira and Freshlyground at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick-Off concert in Soweto in June and again at the final on July 11th. The song

received generally positive critical reception, and became a worldwide hit. “Waka Waka” brought almost instant success and worldwide fame to Freshlyground, who are a South African Afro-fusion band that had originally formed in Cape Town in 2002 and named themselves with inspiration from their shared love of coffee. With a total of 7 band members from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, Freshlyground incorporates elements of traditional South African music (such as kwela and African folk), blues and jazz, as well as features of indie rock. The opportunity to record “Waka Waka” had literally fallen into their lap when Freshlyground were in New York making their album “Radio Africa”. Shakira’s producer had been working in the same building and, in an impromptu conversation with Freshlyground’s producer, had mentioned that he was working on a track for Shakira for which he needed something South African... the rest of the story, as they say, is history. CityPages caught up with Freshlyground’s drummer, Peter Cohen, for this exclusive interview ...

How do you feel about the song with Shakira, and its use as the 2010 FIFA World Cup Anthem? Waka Waka has been great for us. It was a huge opportunity and has put our name out there in a global way. I think any band would be really proud to be associated with such a phenomenon. Are any of the band members soccer fans? None of us are major soccer fans.... but we have become more interested in soccer since the world cup. We have all become huge supporters of Bafana Bafana (The South African National Football Team). What inspires your music? This is a tough question.... so many different things....we all bring something to Freshlyground in terms of our personal influences.... and everyday things like love, pain and politics. How did you join the band? I had been in a band called Bright Blue in the 80s and then Mango Groove in the 90s. Josh, the bass player with Freshlyground who was and is a good friend, called me at very short notice to do a show with the band in 2003. We had one rehearsal and here I am - still in the band.... yay! How important is the role of drums in your music? Very important! At the risk of sounding "main" I think that drums are important in most music, and we have a huge responsibility as drummers to make the other guys in the band feel secure as, ultimately, this has a follow-on effect to the audience. What can you tell us about your new album? “Radio Africa is something of which I think we are all proud. I think it truly represents who we are and where we are, at the moment. We had a lot of fun making it, and I am really enjoying playing the material at gigs. Do you enjoy the touring? It's a bit of a love hate thing... full of peaks and troughs. The highs are so high; the lows are terribly low. But I think I would really miss all the touring if you took it away November 2010

from me... it's the cornerstone of our industry. How have fame and success impacted on your life? An advantage of being the drummer is that most people don't know what you look like so I don't get hassled in the street like Zo (Zolani Mahola) our lead singer. Success does help to make you feel worthy at times and I think I'm old enough to manage that without becoming self important. It’s a big band, so how do you avoid the clash of personalities? We don't have a formula for this but, luckily, we are a good bunch of people and when we clash we manage to keep it fairly tidy. For that matter, how do you resolve creative differences and make decisions? Democracy... which is not always easy with seven, but easier than with four. What does the song writing process involve for Freshlyground? This is an ever-evolving process and we are always looking for the perfect way... unfortunately there isn't one. Some songs come really fast whilst others take months... this if definitely the hardest part of our work. We have heard that your band is the official brand ambassador for Volkswagen in South Africa – what can you tell us about this? We love VW SA who have sponsored us for the last 3 years. We each have a Polo GTI, which is a real pleasure. In return we do charity work for them in many differing capacities How do you guys relax in your down-time? I’m not sure I fully understand the question... but spending time at home with my 22

family is the finest way for me to relax. Which have been your favourite gigs? Prospect Park NY City, and Kirstenbosch Gardens Cape Town Have any goals been set for Freshlyground? The posts are forever shifting.... I guess that to keep it fresh and to continue making a living out of it are the important things for me. Do you have a message for your fans is Kuwait? We’d love to come and play for you sometime, and thanks for the support. And finally, do you have a message for our magazine? A very large greeting from South Africa to anyone watching this space.

DALIDA

One Name … One Hot Singing Talent! Muhammed Altaf

There’s only a handful of singing artists who are known commercially by just one name, and they tend to be quite special. There’s Cher, of course, Elvis and Madonna, Elissa and Fairouz, and more locally we also have Dalida. Originally from Lebanon but now living in Kuwait with her family, Dalida started her singing career in 1992 in a famous Lebanese talent show on LBC station (Studio Al Fan) and was accredited a silver medal when she was just 16 years old. Then, in defiance of her family’s objections, she participated in another famous show on Future TV (Najoom Al Mosataqbal) in 1994 and was awarded the gold medal. She was the star of the show! In 1995 Dalida got married and moved to Kuwait, and she pursued her singing career by performing in hotels and at weddings, ultimately forming her own band which she called “The Lotus”. Dalida’s talent and exceptional singing style earned her an enviable reputation among her fans in the gulf, and she became famous for her performances at female weddings in Kuwait and in Saudi Arabia, even performing at many VIP weddings for royal families in Gulf region. Having decided to become a professional singer and starting work on her first album, Dalida signed a contract in 2005 with the Tedalal-Rotana Music Company and, on Wednesday March 1st, 2006 Dalida launched her first CD at the Virgin Mega Store in Kuwait. From then onwards, her career has gone from strength to strength and she has appeared on TV as well as at live concerts. Taking time out from her busy schedule, Dalida answered a few questions for us at CityPages… When did you start your singing career in Kuwait? Although I had been interested in singing since my childhood, I started my professional singing career around 6 years ago and am now at the verge of completing my third album in Kuwait with Rotana. How would you describe your style of singing? I am quite versatile as I can sing classic, pop, and mix, although classic is my favourite. Who was the influence behind your singing? It has, most definitely, to be my mother. She has a wonderful voice and I am totally inspired by her. 24

www.citypageskuwait.com

Do you have any favourite singers? I am a great fan of Mohammad Abdu and of the legend Fairouz. Who writes the lyrics for your songs? I have worked with several top-of-the-line lyricists such as Yasser Rabbani. Since you started singing in Kuwait, in which Arabic dialect do you sing? It may be surprising to know that I can sing in three accents: Lebanese, Egyptian and Kuwaiti.

November 2010

25

Where do you usually perform? I have performed at several parties in Kuwait, and am quite popular with peole who want traditional singing at Kuwaiti weddings. I have also been invited to perform at some royal weddings in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Have you performed at any cultural festivals like Hala February in Kuwait? No, not so far, but it’s my dream to perform at Hala February event. What can you tell us about your upcoming album? I am actually planning to release singles instead of a complete album. I have finished 3 songs, and the video clips of two are already very popular so I am currently working on the third video clip. I am working with a very popular Kuwaiti composer, Yaqoub Al Khibaisy, and the filming will be done in Egypt. Do you have any hobbies besides singing? I like to travel and to see different cultures, and to meet people from different countries. What is your favourite travel destination? Phuket Island. What type of food you like the most? I like Asian food. What sports do you play? I don’t play sports, but I like walking and try to go for a walk every day. With which famous singer do people most associate you? Quite a lot of my fans associate me with Diana Haddad and with Ahlaam. How can your fans communicate with you? I will soon have a website, as this is now under construction and will be uploaded soon. I have a facebook page “DalidaHamdan” and people often contact me through facebook. Besides this I will soon be signing with an artists’ management office, which will make it easier for people to contact me. What message do you have for us at CityPages? I am very thankful and grateful to CityPages for giving me the opportunity for this interview, and I personally love CityPages as it is the only magazine that has so many interesting things for everyone. 26

INTERVIEWPAGES

Riham Al-Ayyar Marketing the RED Magic Jameel Arif

Commercially launched in 1999 as the first privately owned telecommunications operator in Kuwait, Wataniya Telecom excels in its field and demonstrates great creativity and innovation in all it does. It is often said that the best companies attract the best people, and vice versa, but the Telecoms Business World is fast moving and ever-changing, so when we heard about a star employee at this highly-reputed company who had proved herself in this arena, developing “through the ranks” to hold a key position, we were keen to learn more about their winning formula. When we went to her office to interview Riham Al Ayyar, who is a 34 year-old Kuwaitia currently enjoying her role as Senior Manager of Communications & Marketing at Wataniya Telecom, we had expected to be welcomed into a traditional corporate office. What we found, instead, was a huge room with a table in the centre, where around 15 people were working. We could literally see everyone on the floor, because all the rooms have been constructed with glass walls to create the sense of a very open environment. If this is meant to symbolise a cool, open and young culture, transparent and easy to approach, then it works. In our conversation with Riham, she was also refreshingly easy to talk with, open and honest...

What can you tell us about your education? I was a pupil at the Al-Bayan Bilingual School, and I was awarded a Bachelors Degree in Mass Communication from Kuwait University in year 2000. And what can you tell us about your professional history? I am proud to say that my current employer was actually my first employer. Having applied for work just before graduating, I was offered a job as an Advertising Junior and immediately after graduation I started working. I’ve been at Wataniya ever since then! Can you tell us of any professional achievements to date? I am particularly thrilled to be part of the team that introduced the brand “Wataniya Telecom”. I was involved with it since its beginning when we had the old branding and old logo, and I have been part of it during its evolution into RED. Thinking about the progress we’ve made makes me very proud. Who, or what, are your influences at work? I am influenced by challenges! I am a very hyperactive person and I hardly even sit on my chair. I like hardwork, and I am passionate about learning new things. 28

www.citypageskuwait.com

What do you like most about your job?

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I like that it’s not stagnant. Its changing, with new challenges every day. I believe that Telecoms and marketing represent a great combination, as each of them are ever-evolving areas in which we need to come up with new ideas, and I am glad that our management are young and appreciative of new ideas. Although our official finishing time is 4pm we rarely leave before 6. The team enjoys our work, and we play pool soccer to motivate ourselves.

I am definitely an Owl, as my thinking process works best at that time.

We have adopted all the best elements of an open working environment such as teamwork and collaboration, and have a culture of transparency and availability. That is why all our offices are made with glass walls and are always open so that any team member can approach at any time. Even when I am away my office is open and, at times, it’s used for meetings. We believe in an open door policy!

I do not play any one sport on a regular basis but, as I said previously, I do like to move all the time. I guess you could say that dancing is my sport.

Do you have a favourite travel destination? I am definitely a city girl and like all ‘the best’ cities, such as Paris and New York. My absolute favourite has to be New York, because it’s such a vibrant and busy place where it’s possible to do so many different things every day.

What tools could you not live without? My Phone. Oh, and my credit card! What is your favourite gadget? My iPod. What sports do you play?

Can you tell us of any childhood memories? The best memories that I can recall are of my parents never raising me as a girl, and I was treated just like my brothers. In fact, my dad always pushed me to try everything. I can also recall my mother insisting that we should sit and listen to our elders, and communicate with them. She often used to make us sit with her friends. Whenever we used to say that we did not understand what they said, she suggested that one day we would, and I believe I can see the benefit of that today.

What type of food you like the most? Oh, I love food; all sorts of food. I especially like spicy food. Rice, pasta, the list is endless. I am certainly willing to try any new food, but I do not have a sweet tooth. What do you do on your days off? With the kind of busy schedule that I have, I always keep my days off for the family and I like to give the maximum time to them. Is there anything you never forget to do before going to bed? Read Quran. I have to thank God for giving me the courage and support in rising to new challenges and protecting me always. To what kind of music do you listen? I love music; All kinds of music. I even listen to music that I don’t understand. In fact, there are times in our office when I see everyone working at their desks, and I ask them to play some music because I believe that listening to music is conducive to a good working environment and aids productivity. What is the best Birthday present you ever have received? I have received lots of crazy presents from my friends and, since they know that I always like innovative surprises, they always come up with something different. This year they surprised me with a belly dancer. Can you imagine a belly dancer in Kuwait?!! 30

www.citypageskuwait.com

What are your personal goals? My goal is to contribute to making Wataniya Telecom the Number One telecom company in Kuwait and, in 5 to 10 years, I would like to join the government and try to introduce change. I am very optimistic that my government will change one day, and I would like to treat it like a company and help to bring a better change in it. What message would you like to give to aspiring students in PR & Marketing? I would like to assure them that there are some great and growing opportunities in the marketplace; not only in the private sector, but also in the government sector which now believes more strongly in marketing and PR. My generation learnt the hard way but new students have lots of opportunities and there are, nowadays, many more avenues of opportunity to learn especially within the new private sector universities. Do you have a message for us at CityPages? To be honest, I would really like to thank CityPages for giving me the opportunity for this interview. I know that there are lots of young, talented Kuwaitis who are shy to be publicised, but CityPages is really a motivation for all of them. I really would like to thank you for encouraging me to do this interview, and I believe you have to keep on giving similar encouragement to others. CityPages basically gives a face to the names you hear every day. Good luck and best wishes.

BUSINESSPAGES George Thomas

Business Development Manager Arab Development Center(ADC)

What ails organizations in the Middle East?

As an entrepreneur and a business management consultant based in Kuwait, I have always wondered as to why are there very little local companies with global standing and cutting edge products and services from the Middle East. In spite of abundance in liquidity in the GCC, why and what are the reasons for the absence of ground breaking and dynamic companies like Google, Face book, Tesla, Apple, Nike, Virgin etc from the Middle East? Few of the local companies from Middle East with global brand recognition include couple of airlines. Below are few pointers that might lead light to this dire situation. Bad management practices- Most of the organizations in the Middle East are inherited family firms that are both owned and managed by family members, which might lead to favoritism and prejudice. This eventually guides the organization to incompetence and bad management. Various studies done locally have found that , while family ownership seems to improve management practices, family management by the children of founders is typically less good. An example is Wal-Mart, one of the biggest and successful organizations in the world; though is still largely owned by the Walton family but has a competent, non family chief executive since the retirement of Sam Walton, the firm's founder. Quality management practices- Very few companies here believe in quality management practices. Quality is a unique selling point for any business but it requires initial financial investments. With organizations here looking for short term gains rather than long term growth, a complacent quality management practice will lead to ineffective performance and dysfunctional targets. While working as the Senior Manager at some of the biggest companies in Kuwait, I was appalled at

the ease in which, managements used to fake various quality certificates while bidding for different tenders. Companies simply refuse to incur any extra cost by way of quality implementation.

advantage of everyday opportunities that present themselves; to solve problems, improve processes, incorporate new technologies etc. Google, Face book, Twitter,

Educated work force- In an ever smarter world, the key to corporate success is its educated work force. Unfortunately in this part of the world, even now, personal connections and societal affiliations still gets the job rather than one’s educational qualifications and work experiences. What is needed at present in this region is clever and educated people coming out of the box with slick ideas that blows the competitors away.

Apple are examples of organizations that had meteoric rise within a short span of time because of their unique products and services which was due to innovative culture within these organizations.

Create a culture of innovation- As the competitive landscape continues to change, companies are realizing that their survival requires rapid innovation of products and services, experimenting with new business models, and creating new standards and boundaries for their industries. Being innovative is not about big ideas and new products but it's about taking

Incentives for staff- The success of an organization is very much dependent on their employees and the easiest way to motivate staff is through an excellent incentive program. While doing research for this writing, I interviewed a number of people working in various organizations in Kuwait and most of them never had a pay rise in the last ten years. Moreover, a vast majority of them had their salary reduced by one third to half with in the same period of time. Hence as the saying goes “When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys, the same philosophy can be applied to companies as well. Old school mentality- Many organizations in this part are still run by the founding members who ignorantly believe that the market conditions are the same as it used to be few decades ago, i.e. when they founded the companies. This senior management does not believe in change culture within the organization, innovation, incentives & promotions for the staff, quality concepts etc. Hence these organizations growth trajectory is stagnant or negative, in terms of size and operations, though their origins date back to forty or fifty years. The only thing permanent is change!!! (Heraclitus; 535-475 BC)

10 Office Rules 10.

Never walk without a document. People with documents look like hardworking employees headed to important meetings. People with nothing in their hands look like they're headed for the cafeteria. People with a newspaper in their hand look like they're headed for the toilet. Above all, make sure you carry loads of stuff home with you at night, thus generating the false impression that you work longer hours than you really do.

you know somebody is coming to your cubicle, bury the document you'll need halfway down in an existing stack and rummage for it when he/ she arrives.

4. 7.

9.

Use computers to look busy -- Any time you use a computer, it looks like "work" to the casual observer. You can send and receive personal e-mail, chat and have a blast without doing anything remotely related to work. These aren't exactly the societal benefits that the proponents of the computer revolution would like to talk about, but they're not bad either. When you get caught by your boss -- and you will get caught -- your best defense is to claim you're teaching yourself to use new software, thus saving valuable training dinars.

8.

Messy desk -- Only top management can get away with a clean desk. For the rest of us, it looks like we're not working hard enough. Build huge piles of documents around your workspace. To the observer, last year's work looks the same as today's work; it's volume that counts. Pile them high and wide. If 32

Voice mail -- Never answer your phone if you have voice mail. People don't call you just because they want to give you something for nothing -- they call because they want YOU to do work for THEM. That's no way to live. Screen all your calls through voice mail. If somebody leaves a message for you and it sounds like impending work, respond during lunch hour when you know they're not there -- it looks like you're hardworking and conscientious even though you're being a devious weasel.

6.

Look impatient and annoyed -According to George Costanza, one should also always try to look impatient and annoyed to give off the impression that you're always busy.

5.

Leave the office late -- Always leave the office late, especially when the boss is still around. You could read magazines and storybooks that you always wanted to read. Make sure you walk past the boss' room on your way out. Send important e-mails at unearthly hours (i.e. 9:35pm, 7:05am, etc.) and during public holidays.

Creative sighing for effect -- Sigh loudly when there are many people around, giving the impression that you are under extreme pressure.

3.

Stacking strategy -- It is not enough to pile lots of documents on the table. Put lots of books on the floor, etc. (thick computer manuals are the best).

Build vocabulary -- Read up on some computer magazines and pick out all the jargon and new products. Use the phrases freely when in conversation with bosses. Remember, they don't have to understand what you say, but you sure sound impressive.

1.

MOST IMPORTANT -- DON'T forward this magazine to your boss by mistake!

22nd In memory of and dedication to “Denise”

- Parallel lines And surely the line between the righteous and those who adhere to the opposite side is as thin as the line that was drawn with a pen just a few moments ago … For the crowd is big… the crowd is vast and vaster than ever… and man simply wants to exist in it.

- Remember us Of those of you who will doubt a thousand times, before engaging themselves into the affair of life, a life that calls upon you… Remember us ! For we were those who dared for those who can’t , For those of you who thought the world is too big of a place to conquer, Remember us ! For so small and easy of a distance is the globe, when you embrace it with the eyes of the child we had kept alive, And of those of you who strive in recognizing the pebbles left on the path and quadruple their doubts, Remember us! For louder than all signs was the voice we could hear within, should you but listen to it.

- Prayer And the moment is now as there is no yesterday nor will there ever be any tomorrows tainted onto the sand which passes through the hour glass… And the vision is clear and the vision is grand…the grandest of them all! And the prime thought is in harmony with I and Thee, And in a breathe more eloquent than any 36

word could ever be, I now ask you, Oh God of Love, to grant me the reality of the vision I withheld…

- Of all the roads And as the world watches all the signs announcing its approach, A great battle is indeed preparing, so they say, The battle of polarity of opposite sides , The battle of the within and without, And a battle of a greatest magnetic power switch but beyond all, a time when people shall have to choose once again, So, choose carefully which road your footstep shall take Choose now the road that shall thereupon be named after your destiny…

- Flying Zeus And as i was lifted up in the sky, I saw him, the Lord of the kingdom of Olympus and the glorious one, once part of the seven wonders of the world, the flying Zeus in all its glory! And from above the distance, I then saw the lost city of Atlantis and in colors words have yet to describe but righteously felt by the soul nonetheless. A city half flooded by a heavenly blue water and a place that transpired the perfect equilibrium of peace and serenity. And i saw people… men and woman all rising their hands to Zeus as he was descending upon them. A felt love for their decisive maker. And from the bucket of destiny i saw him throwing water onto the small ones and as

if by magic, the ricochet turned into gold coins! And like a child that discovers snow for the first time, i too felt as if heaven was that which had manifested itself to me for a night….

- Catching the kite Poor might be the one who lets go of the beautiful thing that was decreed by He and brought to him thereupon by the invisible winds to him, And sad it is indeed to think that some of those things will only come once in this lifetime…

- Noosphere And asked about her world, she replied: My empire is one of fearlessness and might That leaves little space for the brave less But amongst which fairness of the heart prevails, My empire is made of air and heights That reflects the symbol of the star under which i walk But in truth, my faith is what rises above and gives me wings to fly higher than many of them all, My empire isn’t made of gold but of turquoise stones That embedded the mountain peak which i have seen and shall soon reach But be sure that the road itself is what counts the most !

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT DIABETES Dr. Nazia Nausheen

WHAT IS DIABETES MELLITUS?

Diabetes Mellitus is medical term for diabetes. The word “Diabetes” is Greek for “siphon” which refers to the copious urine of uncontrolled diabetes. “Mellitus” is Latin for “honey” or “sweet”. So the name explains that the urine from people with Diabetes is too much and sweet with glucose. Our body changes most of the food we eat into glucose (a form of sugar). Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows glucose to enter all the cells of our body and be used as energy. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when a person’s body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use insulin properly. When you have diabetes, the sugar builds up in your blood instead of moving into the cells. Too much sugar in the blood can lead to serious problems, including heart disease and damage to the nerves and kidneys.

42

IMPORTANT SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES • Being very thirsty • Frequent urination • Increased hunger • Weight loss • Blurred vision • Irritability • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet • Frequent skin, bladder or gum infections • Wounds that don't heal • Extreme unexplained fatigue DIAGNOSING DIABETES • The gold standard for diagnosing diabetes is an elevated blood sugar level after an overnight fast (not eating anything after midnight). A value above 140mg/dl on at least two occasions typically means a person has diabetes. • Normal blood sugar levels are between 70-110 mg/dl HEALTH TIPS FOR DIABETICS Eat a healthy diet: • Low in Cholesterol • Low in salt • Low in added sugar • High in fiber

Diabetes is a much talked about subject these days. It is one of the fastest growing diseases in www.citypageskuwait.com the world to an extent that WHO termed it as an epidemic.

• In order to help keep your blood sugar at a healthy level, it is important to eat at least 3 meals per day and never skip a meal. Exercise: • Exercising will help your body use insulin and lower your blood sugar level. • It also helps control your weight, gives you more energy and is good for your overall health. Maintain a healthy weight: Losing excess weight and maintaining a healthy body weight will help you in 2 ways. • It helps insulin work well in your body. • It will lower your blood pressure and decrease your risk for heart disease. Check blood glucose level regularly: Checking blood sugar levels at home involves pricking finger to get a small drop of blood that you put on a test strip then insert the strip into a machine to read the result the results will tell you whether or not your blood sugar is in healthy range. Take your medicine: If your diabetes can’t be controlled with diet, exercise and weight control, your doctor may recommend medicine or insulin. Oral medicines (taken by mouth) can make your body produce more insulin or help your body use the insulin it makes more efficiently. Some people need to add insulin to their bodies with insulin injections, insulin pens or insulin pumps. Always take medicines exactly as your doctor prescribes.

Brush, Floss and Rinse! Paul Tunbridge

O

ne day, recently, I switched on the television and was thrown into the middle of a discussion on one of those American doctor programmes that appear to be quite popular these days. The topic of the day was dental care, and I was horrified to hear it suggested that poor dental hygiene could lead to a greater risk of heart attack. Surely not. Surely I had either misheard the conversation or this was going to be one of those quirky ideas or “old wives tales” that the TV team would discredit in their discussion. But they didn’t. I decided to investigate a little further and found from my own research that people with poor oral hygiene do, indeed, have a greater risk of suffering heart disease! Here’s what I discovered… Along with poor diet and lack of exercise, scientists now say that failure to brush and floss can also increase your risk of a heart attack. According to Professor Howard Jenkinson, who led a study at the University of Bristol, in England, poor dental hygiene can lead to bleeding gums, providing bacteria with an escape route

into the bloodstream where they can initiate blood clots leading to heart disease. Streptococcus bacteria commonly live in the mouth, and are responsible for causing tooth plaque and gum disease. The studies showed that, once let loose in the bloodstream, the bacteria use a protein on their surface, called PadA, to force platelets in the blood to bind together and form clots. “When the platelets clump together they completely encase the bacteria. This provides a protective cover not only from the immune system, but also from antibiotics that might be used to treat infection", says Professor Jenkinson. "Unfortunately, as well as helping out the bacteria, platelet clumping can cause small blood clots, growths on the heart valves (endocarditis) or inflammation of blood vessels that can block the blood supply to the heart and brain.” The importance of good oral hygiene cannot, therefore, be stressed enough. All of us need to be aware that, as well as keeping a check on our diet, blood pressure,

cholesterol and fitness levels, we also need to maintain good dental hygiene if we want to minimise the risk of heart problems. So what is considered to be “good dental hygiene”? I am including here some of the expert advice I have encountered: 1. Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes, twice a day. 2. Floss your teeth twice a day, and rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash. 3. Change your toothbrush 4 times a year (with the changing seasons, perhaps?). 4. Consider using an electric toothbrush, which can be easier and more effective in the removal of plaque than simple manual brushing. 5. Visit your dentist for regular check-ups! Now that’s some good advice to get your teeth into!!.

Health and Fitness Trends for Kuwait Residents

Following on from our Health & Well-being special issue, published in October, results have been released in early November of a recent independent study on health and fitness trends conducted by Zarca Interactive, a leading provider of next generation online survey solutions, which has identified some astonishing health and fitness trends amongst the residents of Kuwait.  65% respondents do not get proper sleep at night  70% respondents find themselves obese or slightly overweight  27% of respondents do not eat breakfast, with 11% not finding breakfast an important meal of the day  49% respondents resort to television and internet to relieve stress  63% respondents eat fried foods two-three times a week The findings of the maiden survey for Kuwait have astonishingly revealed that 27 % of respondents do not eat breakfast at home, and 11% of these do not even consider breakfast to be an important meal of the day. Lack of time was quoted as the other prominent reason for not consuming breakfast. According to the survey, which comprised over 69% males, a combination of toast and coffee is the preferred breakfast option for over 65% of the respondents, closely followed by cereals and eggs. The water intake levels witnessed a healthy trend, however, 46

www.citypageskuwait.com

with over 57% confirming an intake of at least 1.5 litres of water every day. An indication towards an increase in sleeping disorder cases in Kuwait is one of the key highlights of the Zarca health and fitness survey. The study reveals that sleeping disorders are on the rise amongst Kuwaiti residents, with 65% of respondents confirming that they were unable to manage an eight hour sleep on a daily basis. Following a similar trend, the survey revealed that 57% of respondents from Kuwait did not know how to calculate their body mass index (BMI), which further led to the discovery that 70% were surprised to find themselves either slightly overweight or obese. This most up-to-date health and fitness study for Kuwait vindicates the World Health Organisation reports, highlighted during the meeting at the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region in Egypt, which alerted that an increasing use of television and computers was leading to sedentary lifestyles. Findings of this study confirm that over 49% of the respondents from Kuwait resorted to television and internet to relieve their stress, instead of indulging in any physical activity. Further complementing the trend for lack of movement is an increased intake of fried foods by Kuwait’s residents. The Zarca study reveals that 63% of local respondents consume fried foods at least twice a week, and this was yet further compounded by the finding that over 72% of the survey respondents take work

home two or three times each week. The trend for physical exercise also continued to present dismal results with over 49% of respondents affirming their access to prolonged fresh air only on weekends. Similarly only 13% confirmed undertaking any form of physical exercise regularly. The intake of multivitamins as part of a regular diet met with skepticism, with over 35% of respondents considering them expensive and a waste of money. 12% continued with their multivitamin doses when prescribed by the doctor, however. But, while the intake percentage of multivitamins might be low, more than 74% were found to be highly aware about verifying the manufacturing and expiry dates for various products. A similar awareness trend was witnessed with regard to the self monitoring of key health parameters. Survey results indicated that 54% of respondents measure their weight regularly, with over 15% also regularly monitoring their blood sugar levels. Of course, any survey is only as good as the input received, and this first survey implemented by Zarca Interactive in Kuwait was supported by more than 300 respondents, 21% of whom were Kuwaiti nationals, followed closely by Asian and Arab expatriates. But the results detailed here do not really come as a great surprise, and provide confirmation of some worrying trends that have long been observed. Time to take stock, perhaps?

EVENTSPAGES

Out of Order for Birthday Celebrations

Kuwait Little Theatre recently celebrated the launch of their 60th Anniversary Season when the curtains parted for Tim Waddell’s production of the Ray Cooney farce “Out of Order”. In theatre, a farce is defined (courtesy of Wikipedia) as “a comedy which aims to entertain the audience by means of unlikely, extravagant, and improbable situations, disguise and mistaken identity, verbal humour of varying degrees of sophistication, which may include sexual innuendo and word play, and a fastpaced plot whose speed usually increases, culminating in an ending which often involves an elaborate chase scene. Farce is also characterized by physical humour, the use of deliberate absurdity or nonsense, and broadly stylized performances”. As one of Britain’s most successful playwrights, Ray

Cooney is a Grand Master of the farce genre and has racked up hit after hit over the years. “Out of Order” with its compelling script is amongst his best, and was amazingly well-presented by the team at KLT. With dead bodies being transported around the hotel room, an over-sexed Member of Parliament, a saucy French Maid and a waiter who’s always on the lookout to “earn” himself some extra cash, plenty of doors and a faulty window, all the elements for a farce were in place. Timing is all-essential for the comedy elements to work well, and even this was expertly executed. Allin-all the ten-strong cast did a wonderful job that had the audience entertained and, at times, laughing quite uncontrollably. What a great start to the theatre’s birthday celebrations, and a job well done!

FASHIONPAGES Nerd Glasses Continue to Remain Chic What's the point of wearing big, glassless, ugly, black rimmed glasses when you don't even have a prescription to wear glasses. I get it, it's a look but its a bad look. I'm sorry but the trends speak for themselves on the Spring 2011 runways. Glasses continue to remain chic. Models at the Tracey Reese show, wore jumbo Harry Potter like glasses on the runway. Some were clear and others wildly shaped in different shades such as purple and orange.Maybe for some it can be kind of cool in a dirty librarian way.

Incense Pure by Sonoma Scent Studio For: women and men

Unlike the other stars who have chopped off their luscious locks, Anne Hathaway didn't go for the pixie cut willingly. Rather she had to do it for a movie role in her latest film One Day,in which she plays "Emma who meets Dexter during their graduation in 1988 and reunites with him one day each year for the next 20 years," according to StyleList. Thats just too bad because I really like Anne's long her she's one of the few people that can work bangs. Now what's your opinion?

Justin Bieber Makes Nail Polish for Walmart Expect the Unexpected Apparently Justin Bieber must have a little more than just Bieber-fever. In a bizarre twist , he teamed up with Nicole by OPI and created a line of nail polish called "One Less Lonely Girl". Tweens heads will be spinning with the release of the six polishes in December at Walmart. Other names include Step 2 the Beat of My Heart, which of course is a glittery heart shaped polish. For those of you not into the glitter polish of course Bieber created an array of ruby reds, metallic blues and rock star purples. 48

FASHIONPAGES Madonna Sued Over Material Girl Name for Clothing Line It might of seemed like destiny for Madonna's new clothing line to be named Material Girl. But, apparently it was someone else's destiny because the clothing company owned by LA Triumph used the named before Madonna ever did. Peter Afrasiabi, the attorney of LA Triumph, toldX17online exclusively: "Our client and its predecessor have been continually selling similar clothes in similar retail outlets at similar price points under their Material Girl brand since at least 1997 and Madonna and her new-found company do not have the right to trade in the same space under this brand." Another lawyer on the case Chris Ariedge said, "As a result of their acts, our client faces a risk of being subsumed by Madonna's profile, obvious worldwide notoriety and the massive spending campaign by Madonna, her company and retailers on her behalf." The suit also say Madonna's ads are "risque" and confuse the public on which Material Girl they represent. Macy's could be brought in as a defendant upon future discovery. The case demands actual "damages" and "profits attributable to their unlawful conduct according to proof to be proved at trial."

The composition closes with cedar and musk, which give a strong base to this light and gentle fragrance.

Eat, Pray, Love: fresh’s latest scents

Fresh cosmetics has partnered up with sony pictures to produce a set of fragrances based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling journey through Italy, India, and Bali. I’m normally not one for movie merchandise, but linking up what has become one of my most-loved books with a top cosmetics line is a reason to get excited. Each eau stays true to its part of Elizabeth’s journey capturing the senses of each country with notes of Italian lemon and basil in eat; vanilla, pink pepper, and juniper in pray; and peony, rose, mango, and velvet amber in love. while I haven’t smelled them yet, I would wager that fresh has done an excellent job of translating Gilbert’s words and experiences into scent.

Traversee du Bosphore by L Artisan Parfumeur For: women and men

L'Artisan Parfumeur has introduced Traversee du Bosphore. The composition is inspired by the perfumer's journey to Istanbul. Apple and pomegranate are in the top, leather and tulip (saffron note) are in the heart, Turkish delight (rahat-loukum: rose, sugar, almond) is in the base note. The nose behind this fragrance is Bertrand Duchaufour.

4 Short Haircuts That won’t make you look like Justin Bieber Have you noticed all of the ladies who are rocking short haircuts lately? It seems like more young girls are chopping it off, not only in celebrity-land, but in real life too.

January Jones' modern bob is not as dramatic as a pixie cut, but short enough to fall above the shoulders and neck. The short side-swept bangs and curl give this standard cut a retro twist.

Rihanna can make just about anything look good. But this cut with heavy fringe and piecey, face-framing layers is contemporary cool without being too dramatic.

Michelle Williams's updated cut can function as both a bob and a pixie, depending on how it's styled. Here, she pins it back to give it a sleek, yet still tousled look.

Starlit- The starlit comes in black and chestnut and costs $595. It features stars all over lamb suede.

Mandah- Made only in black, the Mandah costs $795. This boot features silver and gold grommets as studs cover the entire boot. Kaia- This other version of the Kaia also costs $595 and comes in zebra.

Emma Watson's new pixie cut hits the ball out of the park. Absolutely stunning and perfect for her feminine features.

COOKINGPAGES Chocolate chip cookies

Ingredients 2-1/4 c. of all-purpose flour 1 tsp. of baking powder 1/2 tsp. of salt 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon 1/4 tsp. of nutmeg 3/4 c. of butter, softened 3/4 c. of firmly packed dark brown sugar 1/4 c. of white sugar 1 extra-large egg 150 g. of chocolate candies (or morsels, for a more

sedate look)

 Preheat the oven to 350oF.  In a bowl, mix together the flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg.  In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and the sugars until well blended.  Add the egg and beat until smooth.  Add the flour mixture in batches, mixing after each addition.  Note that the dough will be crumbly.  Take about a tablespoonful of the dough, press with your hands to make the dough stick together, roll into a ball then flatten between the palm of your hands.

Rolled bacon and cream cheese omelet Ingredients 4 to 5 slices of bacon, cut into shorter lengths 1 celery stalk, cut into halves 1 spicy sausage a small bunch of parsley 1/4 c. (about 60 g.) of cream cheese, softened to room temperature 1 onion, chopped 2 to 3 eggs (depending on their size), beaten salt pepper  Fry the bacon in a non-stick pan. Cook until the bacon pieces are nicely browned and have rendered fat. Transfer the bacon to a plate.

 Sprinkle the chopped parsley on top.

 While the bacon fries, blanch the celery in boiling water for about five minutes. Refresh in cold water. Set aside.

 Arrange the celery stalks and sausages near one edge.

 Reheat the water and cook the sausage until done. Cool then split the vertically into halves.  Roughly chop the parsley.  Reheat the bacon fat. Or throw it away and use vegetable oil.

 Spread the cream cheese on the egg.  Next, pile on the bacon.

 Using the cling wrap as a guide, roll the egg to enfold everything that you have placed on top. Seal the cling wrap, place the package in the fridge and cool for at least 30 minutes. If the rolled omelet isn’t sufficiently chilled, it won’t be firm enough for slicing.

 Cook the onion until soft.  Pour in the beaten eggs, tilting the pan around to allow the eggs to spread. Sprinkle some salt and pepper. Cook until the eggs are fully set.  Slide the cooked eggs on a cutting board and cool.  Meanwhile, beat the softened cream cheese. Stir in some salt and pepper.  Lift the cooled eggs carefully and slip a large piece of cling wrap underneath.

The science behind feeling good while social networking online Sometimes referred to as the “cuddle chemical, Oxytocin (a hormone produced in the brain) stimulates feelings of trust and security, reduces anxiety levels and may even produce positive sexual side effects. It sounds like a miracle drug, so how does anyone get their hands on it? Perhaps, simply by tweeting. Neuro-economist Dr. Paul J. Zak, from Claremont Graduate University, has discovered and scientifically proven for the first time that social networking triggers the release of the feel-good hormone, Oxytocin. Oxytocin is the hormone which triggers a mother's labour and delivery, thus fostering the bond between mother and child. It therefore seems reasonable that it would also trigger other types of related coupling and trust behaviours, and it has been proven that Oxytocin release also produces feelings of affection and contentment. A general sense of calm and love are also triggered by the release of this powerful hormone. Oxytocin remains dormant and stored in our brains and in other parts of our bodies. It is the release of this hormone which produces the feelings. So strong is the effect, that most people would not need to be encouraged to try those activities which release Oxytocin and may even naturally be addicted to them. Zak's study of Oxytocin and social networking revolved around time spent on Blackberry use, Facebooking, MySpace and Twitter and the measurement of Oxytocin levels. I think that these social networking tools simply facilitate and, in some cases, replace the now old-fashioned face-to-face conversation. That conversation is now known as "social networking." Its content was built from the question, "What's new with you?" All of these new social media tools are simply a new way of "broadcasting" the answer to the age-old question of: what is new with you? There are other known health benefits related to networking as well. Additionally, we know that being connected to people and having many friends has long been associated with increased lifespan and the ability to ward off illness. There is an inborn human desire to communicate with others. Isn't that the most viral 54

www.citypageskuwait.com

definition of social networking? I believe that this data should be a wake-up call for every company who is revisiting their marketing programs and determining whether or not social media is "real and here to stay." Today, some form of social media strategy should be part of every firm's marketing plan. People want to connect with others who have shared interests via the hand-held mobile network, laptop computers/Internet and otherwise. Research tells us that when Oxytocin is released, trust and contentment increase while fear and uneasiness decrease. This sounds strangely similar to the longstanding, widely-known goal of "brand loyalty" which companies strive to achieve through a variety of means. It appears that the most viral way to create brand loyalty may indeed be word-of-mouth.

What has yet to proven is whether this "feel-good" feeling is or can be translated into increased and measurable consumer spending habits and patterns, but that data can't be far behind. Smart marketers will create simple, intuitive ways in which their users, vendors, customers and so forth will be able to connect and "reach out and touch someone." Perhaps Bell Telephone Systems was just ahead of their time. Today it will be on your handheld mobile device rather than your pink princess telephone... Zak’s Oxytocin research effort is by no means conclusive given the single test subject, but it does seem to back up what most already know about social media: It makes us feel good. At least now there appears to be a scientific explanation for why this happens.

A while later the man behind the Desk realised the Room Rent was KD.25 only. So he called the Bell boy and send KD.5 and asked him to return the amount to 3 guys room. On the way the Bell boy couldn't figure out how to split the KD.5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each person a KD.1 each and kept the KD.2 for himself. This meant that the 3 men each paid KD.9 for the room, which is a total of KD.27. Now add the KD.2 that the bell boy kept KD.29 Where is the other Dinar ?

The Confession John Grisham

Across the ocean, in the leafy suburbs of London, a man caring for his dying wife discovers, among her papers, a lock of hair that unravels a terrible secret.

For every innocent man sent to prison, there is a guilty one left on the outside. He doesn’t understand how the police and prosecutors got the wrong man, and he certainly doesn’t care. He just can’t believe his good luck. Time passes and he realizes that the mistake will not be corrected: the authorities believe in their case and are determined to get a conviction. He may even watch the trial of the person wrongly accused of his crime. He is relieved when the verdict is guilty.

AUTOPAGES

An Auto Owner’s Guide to KAPOW Recent Hollywood movies have catapulted the Caped Crusader well into the twenty-first century, but there’s an entire generation of fans who still remember the original TV series from the 1960s. From the sets to the “speech-ballooned” sound effects shown on screen, to the dialogue, and even to the standard of acting itself, it was amazingly cheesy and incredibly camp; yet it was compulsive viewing which turned Batman and Robin into true legends. The fact that I have the entire series on DVD perhaps indicates just how sad a life I must lead, but there are many like me who have fond memories of this superhero. Of course, the extent of my fanaticism reaches no further than owning and watching my DVDs ... but there are a growing band of others who prefer to take a step closer to their dream world. For many, the original Batmobile from the 1960s TV series is the ultimate screen car, and now anybody with a spare US$149,999 can acquire one that, in the United States, is even street-legal. An American company called Fiberglass Freaks is now producing officially licensed, road-legal 1966 Batmobiles! And yes, each Batmobile is even supplied with a working flamethrower. Each car takes six months to build and features an array of working gadgets, including a red flashing beacon, a radar screen called 'Detect-a-scope', a retractable, gold-coloured 'Batbeam' and a dashboard DVD player. I must admit that I hadn’t been aware of DVDs in the 1960s, so to me this detracts a little from its authenticity. The flamethrower in the original Batmobile was the result of the car's turbine engine, but this replica uses a 60

www.citypageskuwait.com

BIFF and SPLAT propane tank - mounted in the rear luggage compartment - to create the same effect. Fiberglass Freaks founder, Mark Racop, had decided that he wanted to build a Batmobile when he was just two years old. "I fell in love with the show; fell in love with the action, the colour, the music; with everything. But the best feature was the Batmobile, speeding out of the Batcave," he says. The Lincoln Futura on which the Batmobile is based was never actually put into production, but after finding a body shell on eBay in 2004, Racop had the basis of his replica. The chassis and running gear come from a Lincoln Town Car, onto which a fibreglass body is placed. The licence from D.C. Comics limits the company to making just eight per year, which renders it one of the world's most exclusive production cars. Racop says that buyers are generally in their forties and fifties and fans of the original show - some drive their cars every day. "Wealth seems to breed that eccentricity. This was their childhood dream car, just as it was for me," he commented. At a time when most car manufacturers are falling over themselves to introduce their latest models to the car-buying public, but when so many of the new designs look so strikingly similar to the designs of their competitors, should we really be surprised that those who can afford to splash out on a toy that’s just a little bit different are doing just that? We may never see one of these Batmobiles beyond the shores of the US but, let’s face it, Kuwait’s not really ready to welcome grown men prancing around in lycra tights, bat-ears and wearing utility belts ... or is it? I can only imagine what Robin might say!

TECHPAGES Special Door Designed To Protect You During Earthquakes

Hot Slippers for the upcoming winter

Autumn’s already here, and the bitter chill of winter will be upon us once again. What better way to keep yourself warm, especially your feet, than with a pair of Hot Slippers? Basically, this product is pretty much self-explanatory – all you need to do is pop them into the microwave for two minutes or thereabouts, and the lavender-scented wheat grains inside will ensure that they absorb enough heat to remain warm for up to an hour. Toasty slippers during a cold day? Sounds like a heaven-sent idea. It will be the perfect addition to those who love spending late nights in front of the TV. Each pair of Hot Slippers feature non-slip soles and fleecy insides, not to mention gently scented aromatherapy wheat grains that are always great smelling!

If you regularly deal with earthquakes or anticipate that there will be a big one within your lifetime, you’ll appreciate this new design. It was created in anticipation of a 7.6 magnitude earthquake possibility hitting the city of Istanbul by the year 2030. This door will not only keep you safe during an earthquake, but it also will prolong your life should you become trapped in your home

Lucky Bums Music Strap Speakers

If you are tired of jamming earbuds into your ears, Lucky Bums has a handy little solution for those that use a backpack on a regular basis. Although I’m not a fan of listening to other people’s music tastes on a long train ride there are situations when a set of speakers would be nice. These are capable of handling a little bit of bad weather and will play the music from any old MP3 player.

Bullerjan’s new take on wood stoves

I’ve had and used a wood burning stove most of my life, but none of mine ever quite looked like this. Usually when I think of a wood stove it involves a giant black stove, with heavy metal doors. This does have the heavy metal front, but the outer area is a whole lot more trendy. Plus, despite the strange looks of this stove, it is completely functional.

Cell Phone Watchdog keeps a keen “eye” out for you

The Cell Phone Watchdog is a device that picked up the “Best of Innovations” award at the 2010 International CES show earlier this year, and it is nice to see it being made available online for the masses. We’re looking at a wireless watchdog which will emit an alarm the moment you and your precious cell phone are separated by over 30 feet of distance. It is small and easy to tote around, since you can always slipped it onto a key ring or clipped to a belt. Powered by Bluetooth connectivity, it will not only make noise, but vibrate and flash its LED light as well whenever the paired cell phone and it are about to enter a “long distance” relationship. Apart from that, it will also be able to signal incoming calls, function as a remote Bluetooth noise canceling speakerphone, while working as a piercing panic alarm with an emergency number autodialer. The rechargeable Li-ion battery will offer up to two hours of talk time, where it takes four hours of charging to www.citypageskuwait.com 62 reach its maximum capacity.

Personal Soup Chef Chop! Chop! The Personal Soup Chef is perfect for you to get your favorite soup recipe going in no time at all. After all, it is capable of chopping up your vegetables automatically without the price of nagging at you for all your other faulty traits. It is capable of simmering broth at the optimal temperature to make nearly two quarts of homemade soup with minimal human intervention. Inside the soup cooker lies food processing blades that will slice vegetables and gently stir ingredients as they cook. Nice to see the manufacturer throw in a digital timer as well, letting you set it up to 24 hours in advance so that the cooking process can begin even when you are not around. Depending on the soup that you’re cooking, the temperature can be automatically set from 104º F to 248º F to simmer or rapidly boil the contents. There is also a removable basket that keeps herbs, meat, or stock bones immersed in the soup as it cooks yet enables you to easily strain them from the finished dish.

Panasonic Pocket Doltz Sonic Toothbrush Those vibrating and whirring toothbrushes are very handy. They make sure that your teeth get cleaner without quite so much effort. The down side is that those sonic toothbrushes are so incredibly bulky they won’t fit in any conventional toothbrush holder nor will they fit inside of your average portable toothbrush container. Thankfully, there is this Panasonic toothbrush that is actually made to be portable.

Skullhub USB dampens the mood further Already feel rather depressed at the office? Well, you can have a USB hub which could be the straw that would break the proverbial camel’s back in the form of the Skullhub USB. This macabre looking USB hub will be made out of resin, looking extremely realistic as though it was freshly dug up from some archeological site just last week. Equipped with a quartet of USB 2.0 ports, the hollowed out segment of the skull could be used to hold stuff like jellybeans and paper clips. The USB cable itself is 56 inches long, which means it ought to have some fair share of allowance to roam around your desk.

Lum Smoke Detector with emergency lighting

Smoke alarms are such a normal sight that you don’t even notice them hanging from walls and ceilings anymore. However, no one can ever claim that they’re an attractive addition to your home, they just happen to be incredibly useful. This smoke alarm design is even more useful, plus it could actually be somewhat hidden from sight.

FCC Approves Vertu Constellation Quest

FCC has finally approved the Vertu Constellation Quest smartphone that runs on a customized version of Symbian OS. This handset features Wi-Fi, Ovi Maps, a 3.5mm headset jack, various Vertu services, a digital camera with dual LED flash and video recording and a pre-installed 32GB microSD card.

Geospace Jumparoo AntiGravity Pogo Not even the classic pogo stick could be overlooked when it comes to giving it an update to suit a new generation. It’d be absolutely dull for kids to play with the same toys generation after generation. Thankfully, toys can be altered just a touch and given a little bit of an upgrade. This anti-gravity pogo stick will allow for kids to bounce into the air and feel superior to prior generations.

Deni Cordless Electric Gravy Boat

Whenever you’re serving dinner, gravy is notoriously the first thing to go cold. That’s no fun when you’re dying to dive into some steaming hot mashed potatoes and find yourself left with lukewarm mashed potatoes after the gravy has been poured on top. Thankfully it turns out there’s an electric gravy boat out there that won’t require you to trip over any cords.

Inflatable photo studio can be set up in 3 minutes

A massage chair you can control with your iPhone

So you just spent a a fortune buying a top-of-theline camera like the Canon 5D Mark II and then you realized something: you need a studio to shoot your subjects. Don’t have one? Inflate one on the sidewalk!

A massage chair is great. But a massage chair that you can control with your iPhone? That is clearly even better. The Acutouch HT-9500 is just that, a reclining leather massage chair that has an included iPhone app that lets you control everything from the temperature of the chair to the intensity of the massages. And it opens your world up to brand new ways to be annoying, as if you've got the app, you can control the chair from afar when other people are sitting in it.

The Lazy Little Bird There was once a little bird who was very nice, but very, very lazy. Every day, when it was time to get up, they had to shout at him again and again before he would finally struggle out of bed. And when there was some job he had to do, he would keep putting it off until there was hardly enough time left to do it. People kept telling him "What a lazy bird you are!
