Bu ay sizlere tarihi İpek Yolu’ndan bahsetmek istiyorum. Binlerce yıldır dünya ticaretinin merkezi olan bu hat, sadece ekonomik anlamda değil, medeniyetin gelişimi açısından da ana ekseni oluşturmuştu. Ticari malların yanı sıra kültürel değerlerin birbiriyle buluşmasına ve kaynaşmasına zemin hazırlamıştı. Kâğıttan ipeğe, pusuladan porselene birçok ürün Avrupa’ya bu yolla geldi. Doğu da bazı metalleri, değerli taşları ve camı Batı’dan bu yolla aldı. Kadim Doğu ve Batı felsefelerinin etkileşimi birçok yeniliğe zemin hazırladı. İpek Yolu’nun kontrolünü elinde tutan Anadolu her yüzyılda gelişti, zenginleşti ve güçlendi. İpek Yolu üzerinde bulunan İstanbul, Osmanlı döneminde Avrupa’nın bütün şehirlerine göre nüfus büyüklüğünde en az dört kat, kültürel etkinlikte on kat ileri gitti.

This month I want to talk about the Silk Road. A conduit of world trade for millennia, this road was a major axis not only in the economic sense but in the development of civilization as well, a fertile ground for the meeting and merging of cultural values as well as commercial goods.

From paper to silk, from the compass to porcelain, numerous products came to Europe via this route. The East, too, took glass and ivory as well as certain metals and precious stones from the West via the same route, and the interaction between the philosophies of the ancient East and the West prepared the ground for multiple innovations. Exercising control of the Silk Road, Anatolia developed century by century, becoming rich and stronger. And Istanbul, which also lay on the Silk Road, was at least four times greater in population than any city in Europe in the Ottoman period and ten times more advanced culturally.

İpek Yolu kendine has kültürü ve değerleriyle hep ön planda oldu. Bu yolun müdavimi tüccarlar, bugün dünyanın eksikliğini hissettiği iş etiği konusunda binyıllar önce yaklaşımlar ortaya koydular. Dürüst tüccarlar, deve kervanları ile taşınan mallarının kalitesi bozulunca onları kimseye satmadılar. Beklemiş baharatlarını çöpe atacak kadar ilkeli davrandılar.

Misafirleri baş üstünde tuttular, müşterilerini her zaman şaşırtacak, onların beklentilerini aşacak ürünler ve hizmetler geliştirmeye çalıştılar.

Bugün kalıntılarını gördüğümüz kervansaraylar ve İbni Batuta’dan Marco Polo’ya seyyahların kayıtları, bu eşsiz medeniyet ve kültür köprüsünü günümüze taşıyan eserlerden sadece birkaçı.

Bugün İpek Yolu yeniden canlanıyor. Türk Hava Yolları olarak tüm bu gelişmelere paralel biçimde güçlü konumlanmamızı sürdürüyoruz. Kısacası İpek Yolu gibi dünyayı bağlayan bir ağ örüyoruz. Farklı kültürlerin etkileşimine imkân veriyor, daha önce dünyaya açılmayan birçok şehri dünyaya bağlıyoruz. Bu nedenledir ki Avrupa-Asya-Afrika-Orta Doğu bölgelerinde transfer yolcu pazar payımız yüzde 66’ya erişti.

Değerli Misafirlerimiz, Bugün havacılık sektörünün merkezi Avrupa kabul ediliyor. Fakat tüm araştırmalar gösteriyor ki 2023 yılında bu merkez Doğu’ya kayacak ve İstanbul tam anlamıyla bir aktarma üssü olacak. Türk Hava Yolları özellikle Avrupa-Asya ve Afrika eksenlerinde şimdiden çok güçlü biçimde konumlanıyor, bu gelişmenin avantajını net bir biçimde yaşıyor ve sizlere yaşatıyor.

The first model in the new Benetti Classic series unveiled at last month’s Miami Boat Show, the Classic Supreme 132 doesn’t leave much to your imagination.

by Armaggan Art & Design Gallery and open until March 13. Consisting of works by twenty-six young artists who exhibit various interpretations and methodologies, the exhibition began as they were asked to provide interpretations of what is “new” and being in pursuit of the “new,” based on the maps of Piri Reis.

While some of the artists who worked with Piri Reis’s map and the map metaphor—both in their own minds and in what they produced—addressed the excitement of searching and exploration, richness, courage, and sometimes their own experiences, other artists focused on exotic fruits, personal pursuits, and travelers.

Dünya hızlı, Türkiye hızlı. Büyük, küçük, çalışan, çalışmayan ayakta. Ulaşım ve iletişimin hızla artmasıyla her şey değişti.

Eskiden sadece iş adamları ve üst düzey gelirliler yolculuk yapabilirken şimdilerde her bütçeye göre yolculuk fırsatları sunulabiliyor. Bunların çoğu da Türk Hava Yolları ile yapılmakta. Örneğin; 16 Ekim 2012 günü, İstanbul’dan Tayland’a uçmam gerekti. Bütün koltuklar dolu. Yolcuların hemen hemen hepsi yabancı. Yanımdaki koltukta oturan Alman delikanlıya neden bu geç saatteki uçağı tercih ettiğini soruyorum. Hamburgluymuş “it is comfortable, it is safe” dedi. “Vaay… Türk Hava Yolları nerelere tırmanmış.” diye düşünmeden edemedim ve “Keşke Türk Hava Yolları‘nın bu başarısını Vehbi Koç görebilseydi...” diye uçakta gözlerim dolarak yaşananları düşündüm.

Neler geldi aklınıza?

12 Şubat 1947’de “Devlet Hava Yolları” kimliği ile uçuşa başlayan hava yollarımız, 1 Mart 1956’da “Türk Hava Yolları Anonim Ortaklığı” statüsünü almış ve hem yurt içi hem de yurt dışı uçuşlara başlamıştı. Babamız Vehbi Koç’un da yine milliyetçilik damarı kabarmış ve hepimize talimatlar yağdırmıştı. Yurt dışına yolculuklar mutlaka Türk Hava Yolları ile yapılacaktı. Ne kendisi ne Koç Ailesi’nin bireyleri ne de Koç Topluluğu yöneticileri yurt dışına uçarken Türk Hava Yolları

You often travel due to the important responsibilities you have undertaken in your career and in your social work. What sorts of changes do you think have happened in airlines leading up to today?

The world is fast and Turkey is fast. Big, small, working, or not working, everyone is standing tall. With transport and communication advancing rapidly, everything changed. While only businessmen and high earners could travel before, now there is travel fit for every budget. And most of these trips are done through Turkish Airlines. On October 16, 2012, I had to fly from Istanbul to Thailand. All the seats were full. All of the passengers were foreigners, more or less. I asked the German fellow sitting next to me why he chose this late-hour flight. “It is comfortable; it is safe,” he said. He was from Hamburg. I could not help but think, “Wow,” and with my eyes tearing up with emotion, I thought, “If only Vehbi Koç could witness this success on the part of Turkish Airlines.”

What came to your mind?

Our airline began on February 12, 1947 as the “State Airline,” and it started flights both domestic and international as the “Turkish Airlines Corporation” on March 1, 1956. In an act of his patriotic tendency, Mr. Vehbi Koç issued to us many demands. Travel abroad would have to be done using Turkish Airlines. Neither him, nor the members of the Koç family, nor the executives of the Koç Group would fly anything but Turkish Airlines for their flights abroad. And if we couldn’t support our own national planes, who would, anyway?

Senelerce Vehbi Koç başta olmak üzere aile ve çalışanlarımız, her noktaya Türk Hava Yolları ile uçtular. Vehbi Koç, her uçuş sonrası adeta müfettiş gibi Türk Hava Yolları ilgililerine not yazıp eksiklikleri, hataları bildiriyordu. Sadık yolcular olarak Türk Hava Yolları’nı desteklemenin sıkıntılarını sineye çekiyor ama rötarlardan oluşan sorunlara isyan ediyorduk. Çünkü bazılarının ziyanı kapatılamıyordu.

Aklınıza gelen böyle bir anı var mı?

1968 yılının Ocak ayında, Vehbi Koç ile birlikte İstanbul’dan Zürih’e uçacak, oradan Cenevre’ye geçip önemli bir toplantıya katılacaktık. Buluşacağımız tarih, yer ve saat aylar evvelinden tespit edilmişti. Sabah 09.00’da kalkacak olan uçak, öğlen 13.30’da kalkabildi. Rötar, her yarım saatte bir yenilendi. Bunalan yolcular, diğer uçaklara binip gittiler, biz inatla bekledik. İletişim kolaylığı da olmadığından Cenevre’deki toplantı, akıbetimiz merak edilerek, ertelendi.

Bunun üzerine Vehbi Koç, 21 Ekim 1968’de Türk Hava Yolları Müdürlüğü’ne bir yazı yazarak, rötarların önüne geçilmesini istedi.

Were you communicating your views following these flight experiences?

For years, the family and our employees, Mr. Vehbi Koç most of all, flew everywhere with Turkish Airlines. After every flight, Vehbi Koç wrote notes to the concerned people at Turkish Airlines just as an inspector would, informing them of deficiencies and mistakes. As loyal passengers, we would deal with the difficulties of supporting Turkish Airlines but we rose up against problems caused by delays—some of these deficiencies couldn’t be compensated for.

Do you have a story of such a memory?

In January 1968, we were to fly with Vehbi Koç from Istanbul to Zurich, and from there to Geneva to attend an important meeting. The date, location, and hour we would meet were set months ago. But the plane that was to take off at 9 a.m. only took off at 1:30 p.m. The delay was updated every half an hour. The passengers who grew weary of the situation took different planes while we waited stubbornly. And because communication wasn’t so easy back then, the meeting in Geneva was delayed as well, with them wondering what became of us. Upon this, Vehbi Koç wrote to the Turkish Airlines General management on October 21, 1968, asking them to be done with delays.

Rötarların çoğunun teknik nedenlerle olduğunu öğrenmişti.

“Türk Hava Yolları kendi teknik kadrosunu yetiştirmeli; kabiliyetli, becerikli gençleri eğitmeli. Servislerin muntazam şekilde yapılabilmesini sağlamalı.” demişti. Bu işe şimdiden önemle eğilinirse, kısa zamanda tatminkâr neticeler alınır.

Hem müşteriler memnun olur, hem de Türk Hava Yolları daha iyi kazanç sağlar. Bu devirde, hava yolu işletmeciliği bir memleketin iktisadi hayatında mühim rolü olan bir iştir.

Bütün meselenin ruhu ise kalifiye elemandır, ne yapıp edip bu işi düzeltmeliyiz. Faydalı olur düşüncesiyle fikirlerimi bildiriyorum.” demişti. Velhasıl ömür boyu Türkiye’nin ilerlemesini ve gelişmesini her yönüyle yaşamış olan Vehbi Koç, 1968’deki ilk Türk Hava Yolları uçuşundan 1996’da vefat edene kadar Türk Hava Yolları’nın gidişatını yakından izlemiş, dinlemiş, eleştiri ve beğenilerini değişen müdürlere bildirmişti. Türk Hava Yolları bunları başardı ve bugün çok iyi bir noktaya ulaştı.

So what caused the aforementioned delay?

It was found out that most of the delays were due to technical reasons. “Turkish Airlines has to raise its own technical crew and train capable, talented young people. It should be able to ensure that services are provided in a steady manner,” he said.

“If one were to focus on these matters ahead of time, it would yield satisfying results quickly. Customers would be satisfied and Turkish Airlines would have better gains. In this era, running an airline is something that plays an important part in a country’s economy. The heart of the matter is qualified staff—we have to do all we can to fix this. Believing that they will be of benefit, I thus communicate my thoughts on the matter,” he said. In short, Vehbi Koç, who experienced Turkey’s progress and development in all of its aspects over his lifetime, observed Turkish Airlines’ advancement from his first flight on the airline in 1968 until his passing in 1996, and he communicated his criticisms and positive feedback to the various managers over the years. Turkish Airlines achieved these and today has reached a very good place.

Peki Vehbi Koç bugünleri görse ne derdi?

Türk Hava Yolları, tarihinin en büyük siparişini vermiş. 4,7 milyar dolara 15 adet Boeing 777 alması kesinleşmiş. Eminim ki Vehbi Koç’un ruhu bunları hissetmiş, şad olmuştur. Hayatta olsaydı “Hesapları iyi yaptınız mı? Dikkatli olun.” diye uyarmayı da ihmal etmezdi.

What would Vehbi Koç say about Turkish Airlines today?

Turkish Airlines just placed its largest order ever. It has become certain that it will buy fifteen Boeing 777 aircraft for $4.7 billion.

I’m sure that Vehbi Koç’s spirit felt and witnessed this. And were he alive, he would make sure to warn, “Did you do the calculations well? Be careful.”

Adanmışlık ve 50 yıldan fazla bir çalışma ve fedakârlık, diye cevap vermişti buna ünlü ressam... Sanatçının bugün özel koleksiyonlar, holdingler ve çeşitli vakıflarda çalışmaları, dahası; New York Metropolitan, Guggenheim, National Museum, Victoria & Albert, Pompidou gibi dünyanın 69 büyük müzesinin daimi koleksiyonlarında eserleri var. Harita subayı ve aynı zamanda empresyonist manzara ressamı olan babasının bugünlere gelmesinde büyük payı olduğunu düşünüyordu sanatçı. Resim merakı askeri okulda başlayan babası Adil Doğançay, doğada resim yapmaya giderken onunla gelen 3–4 yaşlarındaki küçük Burhan’a biraz oyalansın, biraz da resmin ABC’sini öğrensin diye kâğıt kalem verip ağaç, kaya, gölge, perspektif çizdirirmiş. Ressam Arif Kaptan’dan ders alan Burhan, babasıyla Ankara’da “Baba ve Oğul” sergilerine dahi katılmış. Kendisine her ne kadar destek verse de bir

I feel lucky for being able to bid him farewell, somehow, as a journalist. In fact, he bid all of us farewell, in practice, with his last exhibition, “Retrospective,” at the Istanbul Modern from May to September. For Doğançay, last year was a busy one. With his work “Ribbon Mania,” he became the first Turkish contemporary artist to have a part in MoMA in New York’s permanent collection.

The artist drew the attention even of those who have no interest in the art of painting with “Blue Symphony,” a painting that was bought for 2.2 million Turkish liras by businessman Murat Ülker a few years ago. Last year, when Turkish composer Kamran İnce composed a piece for it, yet another first occurred in Turkey.

Besides his extraordinary talent, what made Doğançay so different from the others? Perhaps that’s not enough, so let’s go deeper in our question—what was it that made him a worldrenowned phenomenon? Dedication, more than fifty years of effort, and sacrifice, answered the famous painter… Today, the artist has works held by private collections, holdings, and various foundations, as well as in the permanent collections of sixty-nine large museums in the world, such as MoMA in NYC, the Guggenheim, National Museum, Victoria and Albert, and the Pompidou. The artist believed that his father, a cartographic military officer and a painter of impressionistic landscapes, played a great role in his artistic development. Adil Doğançay, his father, gained an interest in painting at military school. When he went outside to paint, he gave his son, Burhan—then three or four years old—a pencil and some paper and had him draw trees, rocks, shadows, and perspective exercises in order to busy him and teach him a little bit about the basics of illustration. Tutored by the painter Arif Kaptan, Burhan even participated with his 3 | 2013 S K Y L I F E B U S I N E S S

Doğançay thus studied at the School of Law in Ankara, and in Paris—where he earned his doctorate in economics—he participated in art classes and mixed exhibits at La Grande Chaumiere.

As he told in our interview of today’s contemporary arts market, “New York is, as befits its name, the cradle of the ‘new.’ Paris, meanwhile, has remained somewhat behind; it is at a more traditional place. The Chinese, too, are accomplishing incredible things. Countries whose names never came up in the arts scene ten years ago—such as China, Iran, and India—are amazingly successful today,” said Doğançay. And while his horizons were expanded in Paris, he also realized that the center of world art would shift from Paris to New York after in the post-World War II era. In 1962, he went to New York as Director of Information and Tourism. Two years later, he quit and started painting twentyfour hours a day. With no income, he began a difficult sort of life; but he held on, saying “I will succeed,” and indeed he did…

When I asked what needed to be done to have Turkish art open up more to the outside, his answer was as follows: “It is necessary to establish the right connections and participate in the right exhibitions. Collectors contribute very significantly to the development of art. As the director of the Guggenheim Museum at the time, Thomas Messer, said to me, first the family

Eserlerinin değeri milyonlara ulaşan Burhan Doğançay, bir ressamın çalışmalarına olan talebin o kişiye olan ilginin göstergesi olduğuna inanıyor ve şöyle diyordu: “Bu Türkiye’de de böyledir yurtdışında da... Bugün dünyada ‘en iyi – en pahalı’yı belirleyen iki kurum var: Christie’s ve Sotheby’s müzayede şirketleri. Yüzyıllardır resmin değerini belirleyecek bir kıstas, bir ölçek arandı, maalesef bulunamadı. Sonunda en pahalı resim en iyi eserdir dendi.

Bunu ben değil yüzyıllardır sanat eleştirmenleri söylüyor.”

has to be supportive and then the country. The world follows this. Art is a nation’s greatest treasure. In Turkey, too, the collection and sales of paintings are developing and maturing.

It is necessary to walk on tirelessly to the goal and to work very hard. There is a culture war among the nations, and it is continuing at a relentless pace.”

In the latter period of his life, Doğançay mostly lived in Turgutreis (in Muğla, Turkey), where he had two studios. His studio in New York also remained, of course. Burhan Doğançay, whose works are valued in the millions, believed that the demand for an artist’s works was an indicator of interest in that person, and he said the following in relation to this: “This is true in Turkey and abroad… Today, there are two institutions that set what’s the ‘best’ and ‘most expensive’: the auction companies Christie’s and Sotheby’s. For centuries, a gauge, a measure to determine the value of a painting was sought, but unfortunately it could not be discovered. At the end, it was said that the most valuable painting was the best work. This is not what I’m saying; this is what art critics have been saying for years.”

Farewell, great artist—you will live through your works.

DOHA IS ONE OF THE SEVERAL CITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST THAT HAS STARTED TO shine and flutter with activity as of late. These days, it is occupied with gaining a new face and a new spirit. With luxury skyscrapers towering in the city, continually increasing numbers of tourists, and uninterrupted series of sports matches, Doha is more attractive than ever.

Due to the effect of the heat, business in Doha begins very early in the morning and ends at around four in the afternoon. The streets are rather empty during the hours of sun, but activity picks up in the city with sunset.

Some families walk along the Corniche (the boardwalk), while others hop in traditional boats called “dhov,” cooling off by drifting amid the glowing reflections on the water of the tall buildings in West Bay. Foremost among the must-sees in Doha is the Museum of Islamic Art. One can easily spend half a day at the museum, which is a superb specimen of modern architecture. Also a must-see is the Katara Cultural Village, an art complex that hosts exhibitions, concerts, and various arts events. It is also home to select restaurants that offer delicious dishes from Turkish, Indian, and Egyptian cuisines.

SIHH fuarına tüm dünyadan yaklaşık 12 bin profesyonel katılıyor. Sadece sektörden kişilerin girebildiği fuar her ne kadar Richemont Group markalarına (özel izinle katılan bir iki marka haricinde) ait olsa da; saat sektöründeki yeniliklerin görülebilmesi açısından en önemli buluşma. Çünkü Richemont Group, elinde dünyanın en önemli ve köklü saat markalarından bazılarını bulunduruyor. Bunların hemen hepsi de yenilikçi firmalar. Fuarın bıraktığı genel izlenim, saat firmalarının, 2013’ü daha çok yenilik ve teknoloji ile dolduracak modeller ürettiği yönünde. Bunda yükselen pazarların etkisi tartışılmaz.

Bu arada, erkekleri daha da heyecanlandıracak ve akıllarını çelecek modeller olduğunu da ekleyelim. Kesenin ağzını açan koleksiyonerler kasalarında da yer açmalı, çünkü bu yıl oldukça çarpıcı saat modelleri göreceğiz. Fuarın yıldızlarını sizler için derledik.

ROUGHLY TWELVE THOUSAND PROFESSIONALS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD participate in this very special fair, which is held in Switzerland at the end of January. Exclusive to industry professionals, the fair belongs to the Richemont Group brands (except a handful of brands that have special permissions), but it is the most important gathering for witnessing what’s new in the world of watches. Richemont Group possesses some of the world’s oldest and deepestrooted watch brands, and almost all of them are innovative brands. The general impression left by the fair is that watch companies have produced models that will fill 2013 with more innovation and technology. The influence of the rising markets on this is indubitable.

As an aside, it’s worth mentioning that there are models that will further excite and captivate men, too. Collectors who open their wallets wide should make room in their safes as well, as we will see some rather striking models this year. We put together the stars of this landmark fair just for you.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication Audemars Piguet, 20. yılını 1993’ten beri üretilen Royal Oak Offshore ailesine yeni bir model ekleyerek kutladı.

44 milimetrelik yeni Grande Complication ROO saatin bu yeni versiyonu 18 ayar pembe altın ve beyaz seramikten oluşuyor, beyaz lastik kayışla tamamlanıyor.

Aynı modelin önceki titanyum versiyonunu fazla enteresan bulmayanlar için tasarlanmış. Maskülen saatlerden hoşlanan hanımlar da bu modeli tercih edebilir.

Audemars Piguet celebrated the twentieth anniversary of its Royal Oak Offshore family—in production since 1993—by adding a new model to it. The 44-millimeter new Grande Complication ROO is made of 18-karat pink gold and white ceramic, finished with a white rubber wristband.

It was designed for those whose interest was not caught by the same model’s previous titanium version.

IWC Ingenieur Constant-Force Tourbillon IWC’nin Ingenieur ailesi bu yıl Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas Formula One takımı ile bir mühendislik anlaşması imzaladı. Bu iş birliği, Ingenieur ailesine “komplikasyonu harika bir saat” olarak yansıdı.

IWC’s Ingenieur family signed an engineering agreement with the Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas Formula One group this year, an agreement that reflected upon the Ingenieur as a “marvelously complicated watch” called the IWC Ingenieur ConstantForce Tourbillon. Available in platinum or ceramic casing, the watch features a tourbillon movement fused with a constant-force mechanism.

Developed by the company with inspiration from ancient Greek mythology, this interesting model consists of a white gold labyrinth-motif disc mounted atop Burmese jade on the dial. Under them is a “minute repeater” mechanism, which tells the time to a lovely tune. The white gold plate on which the labyrinth is mounted is completely handmade, the product of thirty-five hours of labor.

Requiring three years on the part of six engineers to develop, the Caliber 1290P is the thinnest in the world of automatic movements.

Adding a minute repeater to this movement, they have obtained a sound output of 65 decibels. Of the watch’s 407 parts, some are as fine as 0.07 millimeters. The watch itself is 48 millimeters; although thanks to how thin it is, at 9.4 millimeters, it avoids appearing exaggerated on the wrist. We shall see how far Piaget will push the limits in micromechanics with the models to be released in the years to come.

Our lounge at Ataturk International Airport has recently been reopened, implementing a totally new concept developed with our catering partner, Turkish Do&Co. The new features are evident as one enters the lounge, where open spaces create a welcoming atmosphere. Access is simple— just scan the barcode on your boarding pass. There is also a staff counter where agents are available to deal with special needs or requests.

Once in the lounge, comfortable seats are available in multiple areas with different amenities and distractions. Both hot and cold food is always available at a number of stations throughout the facility, and they are changed regularly over the course of the day. Numerous conveniently located carts provide a wide selection of beverages. For those traveling with children, a special play area is provided, and those wishing to freshen up will find shower facilities available. Large windows provide plenty of natural light and a view to the airport operations beyond, and one section of the facility has a living century-year-old olive tree as its focus.
