Değerli Konuklarımız, Bir yılı daha geride bırakırken gelin geleceğe beraber yürüyelim.

Geçen ayki yazımızda Türk Hava Yolları’nın 80 yıllık serüvenini heyecanlı, coşkulu ve oldukça hareketli bir Anadolu çocuğuna benzetmiştik. Bu sayıda ise şirketimizin geleceğini temsil eden Anadolu çocuğu artık bir yetişkindir, yaşam dolu bir gençtir. Bu gencin bütün dünyayı sarmak, kucaklamak, en ücra şehirlerine uçak seferleri düzenleme gayreti ve heyecanı vardır. Bu genç 21. yüzyılın sonlarına yaklaştıkça artık dünyanın her şehrine uçan bir Türk Hava Yolları ile yetinmeyip gezegenler arası seferleri düzenleme hazırlığındadır. Bugün itibari ile dünyanın en çok ülkesine uçan bir havayolu şirketiyiz ve 21. yüzyılın sonlarında gerçekleşmesini beklediğimiz gezegenler arası seyahatte de inşallah öncü oluruz. Şimdi 21. yüzyılın sonundan günümüze gelelim ve 2014’te planladıklarımızı konuşalım… Bugün, misafirlerimize sunabileceğimiz daha çok farklılık, hayatlarına katkıda bulunabilmek için söyleyecek daha çok sözümüz var. Biz, bilinmeyendeki güzelliği görmek için keşfedilmeyenin peşindeyiz. Hiç kimsenin uçmadığı, adını bile telaffuz edemediğimiz destinasyonlara uçmamız bu yüzdendir. Biz bizim gibi düşünenlerle, kalbi bu muhteşem gezegeni keşfe çıkmak için çarpanlarla yola çıkmaya hazırız ve onlara “Dünya daha büyük, keşfet - Widen Your World” diyoruz. Dünyanın en fazla ülkesine uçan havayolu olarak tüm insanları yeryüzündeki farklılıkları keşfetmeye, dünyanın cömertçe sunduklarını daha çok tanımaya ve yeni ufuklara açılmaya çağırıyoruz. Gelecek yıl, ikisi yurt içi olmak üzere toplam on altı yeni hat açacağız. Bu yeni hatlarla uçuş nokta sayımız 260’a çıkacak. Günlük 1300’lere ulaşan sefer sayımızla Avrupa, Afrika ve Asya’yı birbirine bağlayan en etkin şirket olacağız.

Güçlendirilmiş uçuş ağımız Türk Hava Yolları’nın sürekli bir şekilde büyümesine imkân sağladığı gibi merkez şehrimiz olan İstanbul’u dünyada en kolay ulaşılan şehir yapmaktadır. 2014’te yaklaşık 14 milyon yabancı turistin İstanbul’a geleceğini ve bunların çoğunun Türk Hava Yolları’nı tercih edeceğini tahmin ediyoruz. Aynı zamanda Türk işadamlarının dünyanın önemli şehirlerine direk ulaşmasını sağlayarak, ülkemizin ekonomik büyümesine de destek vermekteyiz.

Son on yıldır sürdürdüğümüz büyüme politikalarının bitmez tükenmez bir gayret gerektirdiğinin canlı tanığıyız. 2014 yılı içinde 4 SKYLIFEBUSINESS

maliyetlerden tasarruf ederken servis kalitemizi ve operasyon işlemlerimizi mükemmele yaklaştırmak istiyoruz. Maliyetlerimiz birçok rakip hava yoluna göre %20 daha aşağı olmasına rağmen kültürümüzden gelen “israf etme, ihtiyaç yoksa harcama” politikamızı; kod adı “Tasarruf” olan yeni bir yorumla yıl boyunca tekrar ele alıyoruz. Fakat bu tasarruf projesini yürütürken “Patronumuz” olan yolcumuzdan hiçbir şeyi esirgemeyeceğiz.

Yolcularımız, evimizi ziyaret eden misafirlerimizdir ve aile büyüklerimizden öğrendiğimiz gibi onlara her fırsatta hizmet edeceğiz. Yeryüzünden on iki bin metre yüksekte mum ışığında yemek ikram ediyoruz. Dünyada en iyi ikram veren şirket olmamıza rağmen bu ay başlattığımız yenilenmiş ikram servisimizi yılbaşı itibari ile bütün uçuşlarımızda sizlere sunacağız. Bir yandan da operasyonda mükemmelliği yakalamamızı sağlayan çevreyi koruma, uçuşların vaktinde gerçekleşmesi, yolcularımızın bagaj emniyeti gibi hizmetlerimizi aksatmıyor; bu hizmetlerin kalitesinde kendimizle yarışıyoruz. 2014 yılında hedefimiz, tüm bu bütüncül hizmet kalitemizle 5 yıldızlı havayolu olmak.

Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin 100. yılı olarak kutlanacak 2023 yılı için Sayın Başbakanımız Recep Tayyip Erdoğan önderliğinde konulan hedefleri kendimize referans olarak aldık. Önemli bir coğrafyada bulunan ülkemiz, çok güçlü bir genç nüfusa da sahip. İnsanlığın bilinen tarihi göstermektedir ki, milletlerin en önemli serveti insanlar ve bulunduğu coğrafyadır. Şirketimizin son on yıllık gelişmesinde yolcu sayısının beş, gelirinin ise altı kat artmasında birçok sebep vardır ve muhakkak bu sebeplerin başında Türk Hava Yolları çalışanları ile ülkenin coğrafi konumu gelmektedir. Bu dönemde aramıza gerek Türkiye gerekse yurtdışının en iyi okullarından mezun binlerce genç arkadaşımız katıldı. Oluşturduğumuz vizyon bunların elinde analitik olarak yoğruldu. Bu vizyondan çıkan büyüme politikaları ise gerek ana şirketimiz, gerekse yolcularımıza hizmet veren alt şirketlerimizdeki bütün çalışanlarımızın gönüllerinden gelen gayretle şekillendi. Türk Hava Yolları’na bu başarıyı getiren insan faktörü, Türkiye’deki ciro sıralamasında yerimizi yirmi basamak atlatarak üçüncülüğe oturtmuştur. Alt şirketlerle beraber otuz bin çalışanımıza gönülden teşekkür ediyorum.

Bundan 10 yıl öncesinde hayal olarak görünenler bugün bizim 2023 hedefimiz oldu ve bu hedefe hemen hemen ulaştık. Türk Hava Yolları 2023 yılında 450’den fazla uçağıyla 120 milyon yolcusu ve 24 milyar USD cirosu ile en büyük şirketlerden biri olacaktır. Türk Hava Yolları’nı Türkiye’nin küçük bir modeli olarak alırsak, Sayın Başbakanımızın koyduğu onuncu büyük ekonomi olma hedefini inşallah hep beraber göreceğiz. Bunun için içimizdeki gençlik heyecanımızı kaybetmeden bu yolda yürümeye ve üretmeye devam edelim.

Dear Guests, As we leave behind another year, let us time travel into the future. In our letter last month, we compared Turkish Airlines’ 80-year adventure to the childhood of an excited, enthusiastic and fairly active Anatolian child. Now, in this issue, we will look ahead and portray the child from Anatolia as grown into a lively young adult, representing the future of our company.

This young person has the zeal and enthusiasm to embrace the whole world and organize flights to the most remote cities.

As the end of the 21st century approaches, this young person will no longer be content with a Turkish Airlines that flies to every city in the world but will be gearing up to launch interplanetary flights. We are the airline that flies to more countries than any other airline in the world today, and, God willing, we will also be a pioneer in the inter-planetary travel that we expect to realize by the end of the 21st century.

But let us come back now from the end of the 21st century to present day and talk about our plans for 2014. We have a whole lot more variety to offer our guests today, and a lot more to contribute to their lives. In order to see the beauty in the unknown, it is the unexplored that we are after. That is why we fly to destinations to which no one else flies; destinations whose names we often cannot even pronounce. We are ready to set out with those who think like us, with those whose hearts beat to explore this magnificent planet, and we tell them, “Widen your World!” As the airline that flies to more countries than any other airline in the world, we invite all people to discover the differences on the earth, to get to know better what the world so generously offers, and to open up new horizons. Next year we are going to inaugurate a total of sixteen new flight destinations, two of which are domestic, bringing the total number of our destinations to 260. With up to 1,300 flights a day, we will be the most active airline connecting Europe, Asia and Africa.

As its expanded flight network enables Turkish Airlines to grow continuously, it also makes greater city of Istanbul the most easily accessible city in the world. We estimate that some 14 million foreign tourists are going to come to Istanbul in 2014 and that most of them are going to choose Turkish Airlines.

It is also worth noting that we lend support to our country’s economic growth by providing Turkish businessmen with direct access to the world’s major cities.

We are a living witness of the unflagging efforts demanded by our growth policies of the last decade. As we save on costs in 2014, we want to approach perfection in our operations and service quality. Despite the fact that our costs are 20% lower than those of many of our competitors, throughout the year we will again be reinventing our code name “If there’s no need, don’t spend, don’t waste” retrenchment policy, which derives from our culture. As we implement that savings project, however, we will not stint on anything when it comes to our “Boss”, in other words, our Passengers. Our passengers are like our guests at home; so, as we learned from our elders, we want to serve them at every opportunity. In fact, we are now

offering them dinner by candlelight at 12,000 meters up in the air. Although we are already the airline with the best catering services in the world, we have launched yet another newly revamped catering concept this month and will be offering it on all our flights as of new year. Environmental protection, on-time flights and baggage safety are the services that enable us to approach perfection in our operations, and we are competing with ourselves in the quality of all those services. It is with that holistic model of service quality that our target in 2014 is to become a 5-star airline.

We have taken the targets set by our Distinguished Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as our reference for 2023, when the Republic of Turkey will celebrate its centenary. Our country has a very strong young population and is located in an important region of the world. The known history of mankind has shown that people and geography are the most important wealth of nations. There are many reasons why our company has grown so rapidly in the last decade, increasing its passenger numbers five-fold and its revenues six-fold. On top of those reasons are Turkish Airlines’ employees and the country’s geographical situation. During that period, thousands of young people - graduates of the best schools in Turkey and abroad - have joined us. The vision we created has been analytically shaped under their care. And the growth policies originating from that vision have been realized through the relentless efforts of all those who work not only for our parent company but also for the subsidiary companies that serve our passengers. The human factor that has brought Turkish Airlines this success has placed us the third in rankings in terms of the largest sales revenues in Turkey. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to our thirty thousand employees, including those working for our subsidiary companies.

Things that seemed like a dream ten years ago are our targets for 2023 today, and we are closer to achieving those goals than ever before. With more than 450 planes, 120 million passengers and sales revenues of USD 24 billion, Turkish Airlines is going to be one of the biggest airlines in the world in 2023. If we take Turkish Airlines as a scale model of Turkey, God willing, we are going to see all together that our Prime Minister’s goal for Turkey being the world’s tenth largest economy will be realized as well. Let us continue to produce and move forward along that path without losing the youthful enthusiasm of us.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to Skylife magazine, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and all its readers for their unflagging interest. On December 12, the New York Bonhams auctioneers are staging a time-piece auction sale holding a rare item from the Ottoman period. The miniature musical box given by Sultan Abdülaziz to his son Prince Mahmud Celaleddin is not only one of the most elegant presents a father could give to his son but also a unique example of Swiss watch-making and jewellery craftsmanship. Ornamented with diamonds and engraved with a monogram of the Prince, once opened the box reveals a vibrant coloured feathery singing bird. The front panel of the box holds an enamel clock adorned with pearls. The winding movement operates under the clock.

The manufacture of this miniature musical box is signed by Jean-Georges Reymond of Geneva and by the renowned mechanism masters of the time, the Rochat brothers.

Much is known about the Rochat brothers but less about their artefacts. The musical boxes they designed are being recreated by the firm which reopened in 2010. The opening price estimated by Bonhams for this marvellous musical box is between 120,000 and 180,000 US dollars.

When Evliya Çelebi ended a prayer with “travel, o Messenger of Allah” instead of “intercession, o Messenger of Allah,” he kicked off a chain of events that would accompany him for the rest of his life. For more than forty years, he traveled across territories spanning from Albania to Azerbaijan and from Thessaloniki to Damascus, recording his observations on the places he visited in a volume titled “Seyahatname” (Travelogue).

In 2011, the four hundredth anniversary of the birth of Evliya Çelebi, who left a deep influence on Ottoman and Turkish literature, was celebrated with various events. Jewelry company Pırlant joined forces with Italian pen giant Marlen to design a pen in honor of the famous traveler. Evliya Çelebi’s travels, symbolized by him on horseback, are projected on a background of the world map created by Piri Reis. Production of these pens will be limited to four hundred, in roller and fountain pen format.

Each one comes in a custom wooden box that includes the book “Evliya Çelebi’nin İzinde” (On the Trail of Evliya Çelebi).

Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey are releasing pink and white gold versions of their earlier Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain, which was limited to a production of thirty-three units, featuring natural titanium movements. Though this model does not differ significantly from its predecessor, it is an alluring creation that brings an architectural flair to watchmaking with its aesthetically outstanding three-dimensional dial.

The numbers indicating the time are embedded not in the surface of the watch but in a transparent, synthetic sapphire ring, creating the illusion that they are floating. A “ghost” bridge for the tourbillon was made using the same material, giving a spiffy appearance to this miniature regulator that seemingly defies gravity. Though the brand was founded in 2004, it has already constructed for itself an image that measures up to the classics in complex watches, setting high expectations for what notable innovations it might release in the future.

The Museum of London is hosting an exhibition of a hoard of jewelry that was dug out of the ground to see the light of the present day. All designs in this collection of jewelry, which was found by chance in 1912 during digging in a cellar located in Cheapside, London, are from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Bearing the hallmarks of the Elizabethan and Jacobean style from that period, the jewels are of special significance to jewelry enthusiasts and history buffs as rare specimens from that era that have survived to this day. One of the most important aspects of the exhibition—which is sponsored by Fabergé, Gemfields, and Coutts—is that close to five hundred pieces of jewelry, one hundred years after they were discovered, are being shown to the public for the first time ever. Notable among these historic, unique designs are a watch set in a single large emerald and a brooch depicting a legendary salamander— believed to be invulnerable to fire, or even to inhabit it—in gold and cabochon emeralds.

Delivering an impressive performance, the young Frenchman Victor Dubuisson emerged as the winner of the tournament.

Jamie Donaldson came second, with two more strokes than Dubuisson earning him a score of -22. On the last day of Turkish Airlines Open, Donaldson hit a hole in one at the sixteenth hole with a marvelous stroke, winning Turkish Airlines’ one million mile reward. Tiger Woods and Justin Rose, who delivered impressive performances at the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final held last year (also in Belek), were tied for third, both ending the tournament with -20. Minister of Youth and Sports Suat Kılıç presented Dubuisson’s prize at the award ceremony held on the last day of the tournament. Donaldson, who came in second, was given his prize by Turkish Airlines Board and Executive Committee Chairman Hamdi Topçu.

Designed by retired golfer Colin Montgomerie, the Montgomerie Maxx Royal in Belek, notable for offering a climate suitable for golf throughout the year, earned the admiration of players and spectators alike.

Caroline Scheufele, yeni koleksiyonunun tanıtımı için -30 yıldır Türkiye’de distribütörlüğünü yürüten- Tektaş Saat ve Mücevher Evi’nin Nişantaşı’ndaki ofisindeydi. Gezdiği Topkapı Sarayı’ndaki Osmanlı mücevherlerinden çok etkilendiğini söyleyen Scheufele, her yıl sponsor oldukları Cannes Film Festivali’nin kırmızı halı seremonisinde önümüzdeki yıllarda Osmanlı esintili modeller görebileceğimizi söyledi. Yüksek mücevher sanatının en seçkin örneklerinden oluşan yeni koleksiyonunun yanı sıra kendisinden mücevherin doruk noktasındaki bu parçalara karşı dünyada nasıl bir tavır sergilendiğini de öğrendik.

Dünyanın en büyük mücevherat markalarından birinin eş başkanı ve tasarımcısı olarak seçkin mücevher sanatının dünya genelinde sürekli artan popülaritesini nasıl değerlendiriyorsunuz?

Yüksek mücevher dünyası giderek büyüyor ve bu pazara yönelik üretim yapan yeni şirketler ortaya çıkıyor. Bu yüzden tüm yeteneklerimizi korumamız ve müşterilerimizi şaşırtıp baştan çıkartmaya devam etmemiz gerekiyor. Örneğin 2011 yılında tanıttığımız Temptations Koleksiyonu, tanzanit, künzit, rubelit gibi renkli ve değerli taşlarla yapılmış varyasyonlar sunuyordu. Bu koleksiyon daha öncekilerden oldukça farklıydı ve farklı bir müşteri kitlesine hitap ediyordu. 2010 yılında 150 farklı hayvan türünü içeren Animal World Koleksiyonu’nu çıkarttık ki bu da fazlasıyla yenilikçiydi.

CAROLINE SCHEUFELE, COPRESIDENT AND DESIGNER OF GLOBAL WATCH and jewelry giant Chopard, visited the Nişantaşı office of Tektaş Watches and Jewelry—the brand’s local distributor for thirty years—for the promotion of a new collection. Scheufele said she was very impressed by the Ottoman jewelry she saw while touring Topkapı Palace, adding that we may expect to see an Ottoman flair in creations at the red-carpet ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival, which they sponsor every year. Besides the new collection of the finest specimens of the art of high jewelry, we discussed how the world approaches the products of the apex of the craft.

As copresident and designer of one of the world’s largest jewelry brands, how would you describe the constantly growing worldwide popularity of the art of high jewelry?

The world of high jewelry is getting bigger; there are more brands offering high jewelry. That is why we need to keep being creative to continue to surprise and seduce our clients. For example, in 2011 we introduced the Temptations Collection, which features a variety of precious and colored fine stones such as tanzanite, kunzite, and rubellite. This collection was rather different from what we had done before, and it attracts another kind of clientele.

In 2010, we launched the Animal World Collection, with 150 different animals represented—that was extremely new too.

Bu tür mücevherlerin genellikle mücevher kasalarında saklanmak için yapıldığı fikrine katılıyor musunuz?

Seçkin mücevherlerin mücevher kutularında saklanması gerektiğini düşünmüyorum. Mücevherler takmak içindir. Bir seçkin mücevher tasarlarken hayalimde nasıl kullanılacağını canlandırıyorum. Tabii Red Carpet Koleksiyonu gibi bazı yüksek mücevher koleksiyonları günlük kullanım için değil daha özel günler için tasarlanıyor ama ben pırlantalı bir kokteyl yüzüğünü jean pantolonla kombinlemeyi her zaman çok sevmişimdir.

Peki Chopard bugün yüksek mücevher sanatına dâhil olan bu mücevherlerin müşterilerini ne kadar tatmin edebiliyor?

Bu bizim sürekli başarmaya çalıştığımız bir şey… Red Carpet, Animal World veya Temptations koleksiyonları gibi ikonlaşmış koleksiyonlarımız var ama aynı zamanda VIP müşterilerimiz için ısmarlama koleksiyonlar da çalışıyoruz.

Bazen inanılmaz bir taş buluyor ve ona uygun bir tasarım düşünüyorum, bazen de belli bir tasarım için özel bir talep geliyor ve o fikre en uygun taşı bulmam gerekiyor.

Bugün lüks mücevher konusunda dünyanın en tutkulu insanları diyebileceğimiz bir kesim var mı? Böyle bir profil çıkartılabilir mi?

Do you agree with the idea that such jewelry is mostly made to be kept in jewel safes?

I don’t think that pieces of high jewelry should be kept in a box.

Jewels are made to be worn. When I design a piece of high jewelry, I try to imagine how the person will wear it. Of course, some of the high jewelry collections, such as the Red Carpet Collection, are more for special occasions and not for every day.

However, I always love wearing a pair of jeans with a diamond cocktail ring!

To what degree is Chopard able to satisfy the customers of high-end jewelry today?

This is something we always try to achieve… We have iconic collections such as the Red Carpet Collection, the Animal World Collection, and the Temptation Collection, but we also do some bespoke creations for our VIP customers. Sometimes I’ll find an incredible stone and imagine the design of the piece; other times, I’ll receive a special request with a particular design, and so I’ll have to find the right stone to fit the idea of the design.

Which people could be characterized as the most passionate about high-end jewelry in the world today? Do they match a certain profile?

More and more women are becoming sensitive to high jewelry.

The same goes for men. Today, a piece of high jewelry is considered a piece of art. However, I would say that the profile of a lover of high jewelry would be match that of someone who is passionate about precious stones as myself.

Son zamanlarda -Louis Vuitton, Chanel ve benzeribüyük moda evlerinin lüks mücevher pazarında yer edinme çabalarına ne diyorsunuz?

Bizden çok farklı bir yaklaşımları var. Moda dünyasından geliyorlar; bizim ise bir kuyumculuk ve saatçilik geleneğimiz var. Ayrıca biz kuyumculuğun her adımında her bir parçayı kendi bünyemizde üretiyoruz.

Biraz da bugün burada sergilenen parçalardan söz edelim. 2014 için neler öngördünüz? Taşlar, kesimler, teknikler ve benzeri konularda nasıl değişiklikler planlıyorsunuz?

150. kuruluş yıldönümümüz anısına hepsi renkli taşlarla süslenmiş 150 farklı hayvan figüründen oluşan Animal World Koleksiyonu’nu hazırladım. Geçen yıl doğadan esinlenen bir koleksiyon hazırlamıştım ve o zamandan beri bu temayla ilerliyoruz. Tasarımların çoğunda çiçeklerden esinlendim ve hepsi de çok renkli. Ancak bunun yanında, özellikle de Red Carpet Koleksiyonu için klasik pırlanta parçalar yapmaya devam ediyoruz.

Türkiye’de lüks mücevher müşterileriniz var mı? Bunlar hangi profile daha yakın?

Evet, Türkiye’de lüks mücevherat müşterilerimiz var. Bunlar uluslararası alıcılar ve belirli bir profilleri yok.

What do you think of large fashion houses—Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and the like—trying to gain a foothold in the high-end jewelry market as of late?

Their approach is very different from ours. They come from fashion whereas we have a tradition of jewelry and watchmaking. Moreover, we produce everything in house at each step of jewelry making.

Let’s talk a little about your jewelry that’s on exhibit here today. What have you foreseen for 2014? What changes do you have in mind, in terms of stones, cuts, techniques, and so on?

For the occasion of our 150th anniversary, I created the Animal World Collection, composed of 150 different animals set with colorful stones. Last year, I developed a nature-inspired collection, and we have kept going in that direction since then. Many of the designs are inspired by the flowers and are very colorful. However, we keep making also classic diamond pieces, especially for the Red Carpet Collection. But besides these, we continue to create classic diamond pieces, especially for the Red Carpet Collection.

Do you have high-end jewelry customers in Turkey?

What profile do they match closest?

Yes, we have high-end jewelry customers in Turkey. They are international buyers and do not match a specific profile.

How do the people of this city live? My first (and rather jolting) encounter with Thai culture, in which the influence of Buddhism is felt in every part of daily life, took place as I checked in to the Millennium Hilton Bangkok, our five-star hotel on the banks of the Chao Praya River, which bisects the city just like Istanbul’s Bosphorus.

We are immediately placed in comfortable seats, not being left to stand in the lobby.

The employee looking after me kneels, crawls toward me, and starts recording my personal details. I later learned that this is a traditional expression of respect, but one is still taken aback by such a degree of modesty. The local people consider donating rice to the monks who tour the city each morning with bowls in their hands to be divine service, love their eighty-five-year-old philosopher-king Bhumibol—a successful jazz musician—deeply (see “The King and I,” set in the legendary kingdom of Siam and starring the charismatic Yul Brynner), and are incredibly tolerant. Besides the mainstream that follows tradition, there is a modern bourgeois set produced by fastpaced city life. This new generation, whose members use

As I wander the city, I find an astonishing variety of affordable street food. Freeing Bangkok’s denizens of the chore of cooking at home, these stalls offer practically everything—a vast range of seafood including giant river shrimp, crabs, and clams, and delicious casseroles or roasted dishes such as baked fish and curried chicken, all packaged in small portions and sold in bags. WITH ITS DELICIOUS FLAVORS, centuries-old tradition in the cloth trade, openness to art, and cosmopolitan character, Lyon is a dynamic city that sustains history and industry simultaneously. Öncelikle Emre Arolat Architects-Context and Plurality isimli kitaptan başlayalım. Bu monografi size neler hissettiriyor?

Her proje, her ödül ya da kitap bana “Hadi bu da oldu, bir sonrakine bakalım.” hissiyatı getiriyor doğrusu. Bu kitabın son dönemdeki çalışmaları bir yılda tamamlanmış gibi görünse de geçmişe dönük hazırlıkları beş altı yıla yayılıyor. Kuşkusuz son dönem, tüm verilerin toparlanarak bir araya getirilmesi adına çok daha heyecanlıydı. Ancak sanırım biraz maymun iştahlı birisiyim ben. Daha önce üzerinde deliler gibi uğraştığım pek çok konuda olduğu gibi, yayınlandıktan sonra kitap konusunu da bir kenara bıraktım. Şimdi sadece onu dünyadaki önemli merkezlerde görünce hoşuma gidiyor. Hissiyatı böyle… Ödül kazanmak için yola çıkmadığınızı daha önce defalarca söylediniz ama burası çok ödül kazanan bir mimari ofisi ve siz de çok ödül kazanan bir mimarsınız. Daha çok bununla öne çıkıyorsunuz. Ödüller işe yaklaşımınızı etkiliyor mu?

Aslında dünyada mimarlık ödüllerinde müthiş bir enflasyon var. Gayrimenkulün dünyada lokomotif sektörlerden biri haline gelmesiyle özellikle gelişmesini sürdüren ülkelerde, verilen ödüllerin sayısı bir hayli arttı. Böyle olunca da gayrimenkul ödülleriyle sahici mimarlık ödülleri birbirine karıştırılır oldu.

Müşterisine iyi para kazandıran bir yapıyla, mimari açıdan üstün özellikleri olan bir yapının aynı terazide karşılaştırılmaması lazım. Ama bizimki gibi ülkelerde bunlar sıklıkla birbirine karıştırılıyor. Kuşkusuz Ağa Han gibi mimarlık adına değerli ödülleri aldığımız zaman bizim için çok daha sevindirici oluyor. Ama daha önce de söylediğim gibi, mümkünse her ödülü, kazanıldıktan kısa süre sonra unutmakta ve fazla da kafaya takmamakta fayda var.

Let’s start with the book “Emre Arolat Architects: Context and Plurality.” What does this monograph make you feel?

Every project, award, or book gives me the feeling, “All right, this is over; let’s move on to the next,” to be frank. Although the recent work on this book appears to have been completed in a year, preparations date back to five or six years ago. Surely it was much more exciting to collect the information for the recent term. But I suppose I’m somewhat of a whimsical person. As with many other topics I’ve worked on intensely, I set the matter of the book aside after it was published. Now, I just enjoy it when I see it at the world’s important capitals. That’s what it feels like.

You have stated many times before that you did not set out to win awards, but your architecture firm is one that has won many awards, and you are an architect who has won many awards as well. You stand out mostly for that. Do the awards influence your approach to work?

There’s an incredible bubble in architecture awards worldwide, actually. With real estate becoming one of the world’s driving industries, the number of awards granted especially in developing countries increased considerably. And this being the case, real estate awards and actual architectural awards are being conflated with each other. A building that makes good money for its client and a building with architecturally exceptional qualities should not be compared by the same measure, but in countries like ours these are frequently mistaken for each other. It’s certainly much more pleasing to us when we win architecturally valuable awards like the Aga Khan award. But as I said before, there is merit to forgetting about every award soon after it is won, if possible, and not dwelling on them too much.

Şunu açıklıkla söylemek lazım, cami mimarlığı veya İslam ibadethanesi hakkında ne Kur’an’da ne de herhangi bir İslam yazımında biçimsel anlamda bir tarif bulamazsınız. And what is your firm’s approach to architecture?

We don’t actually set out on any project with the intention of winning an award. It’s possible to divide the world’s architectural production roughly into two halves. One of these is for architects and architecture firms to establish their own styles and apply their styles very clearly to nearly every situation, problem, location, territory, and function. I’m not one of the architects who believe in this. I think an architect’s style is rather the outcome of sorts of an intense mental process of production. The architecture we practice is contextual; it belongs to a place—to its place. That is to say it’s a field of activity that aims to exploit and uncover the potential of the situation and geography it is in, asks new questions each time, and aims to ask the questions relevant specifically to each project. Since the definition of the problem and situation varies in each case, the visual characteristics of the resulting product are naturally distinct. Seen from the outside, Sancaklar Mosque—on which construction was recently completed—and our new project in Mardin do not resemble each other much, though both are places of worship, since the geography in which each is located, the topographical qualities of their areas, and the environmental and physical characteristics surrounding the two are all very different.

On that point, I’d like to ask about Sancaklar Mosque. We all have a picture that appears in mind when we think of a mosque—and with this project, you have created a building completely unlike this…

It needs to be said clearly that there is no formal description of mosque architecture or Islamic houses of worship in the Quran nor in any other Islamic text. When you examine masjids, the first specimens of Islamic houses of worship,

Yapının İstanbul için önemli bir nokta olması, bir destinasyon haline gelmesi, İstanbullu tarafından da tepe tepe kullanılması benim için en büyük amaçtı. Üzerinde çok çalıştığımız bir projedir Zorlu Center. Daha önce kimsenin giremediği bu alan, şu anda herkesin üstelik de güvenlik kontrolünden geçmeden yürüyerek girebildiği kamusal bir yer oldu. The structural typologies repeatedly put to practice in the Seljuk or Ottoman eras— and even these differ from each other significantly—have gained a sort of sansrosanctity. Centuries after these eras, I can’t possibly understand behaving within these molds and not producing original creations instead of these replicas. And when we took on the matter of Sancaklar Mosque, we sought answers to such questions as the conception of space in Islamic philosophy, what distinguishing qualities this conception has, and how we could reach the essence of worship. Seyyed Hossein Nasr, the Islamic scholar, says that in Islamic architecture, the building is not a monument or being placed in the middle of an empty space as in Christian architecture but an empty space surrounded by matter, or a space “carved” into matter. Besides this, modesty is an important priority in the Islamic religion as well. And we designed a building overlooking Lake Büyükçekmece, one that is consistent with the terrain instead of standing out on its own in a place with not so many buildings around and has become the property of that terrain.

As for the city center, you have completed Zorlu Center, a very large project. Much has been said and written about this project, too. Some like it and some don’t. But more importantly, how do you feel about this project?

My greatest aim was for the structure to become an important location for Istanbul—for it to become a destination and be used heavily by the denizens of Istanbul. Zorlu Center is a project on which we did a lot of work. An area that nobody used to be able to enter has become a public space that anyone can enter without even having to pass through secu-

Aynı şekilde iki büyük projeniz daha var Mecidiyeköy’de. Eski Ali Sami Yen Stadı’nın yerinde ve hemen onun yanında yükselecek çok amaçlı kuleler.

Mecidiyeköy benim İstanbul’da çok sevdiğim bir yer değildir maalesef. Bunun sebebi sanırım ortasından geçen viyadük. Şimdi siz iki büyük arazi üzerinde yükselecek büyük projeler yapıyorsunuz ve o çevreyi biraz da olsa değiştirmek elinizde... İstanbul’da yaşayanların pek çoğu için bilinen bir yer olmayabilir, ancak Likör Fabrikası’nın önündeki alan şimdiye kadar yüksek bir duvarın arkasında duran kocaman bir bahçeydi. Projenin ilk aşamasında bu alana bir yapı koymak yerine bir kent parkı olarak halka açılmasını çok önemli bulduk. Mecidiyeköy’de açık havada bulunabileceğiniz ve nefes alabileceğiniz bir alan yok. Duyarsız yapısal müdahaleler ile zaman içinde büyük bir fiziksel tahribata uğramış olan tarihi Likör Fabrikası’nı da bilimsel bir rekonstrüksiyonla yenilemeyi ve önündeki yeşil alanla bütünleşik bir kültür yapısına dönüştürmeyi amaçladık. Tüm yeni yapıları da güney tarafına, fabrikanın arkasına yerleştirdik. İşin bizim açımızdan sevindirici yanı, bu arazideki Quasar yatırımının işvereni olan Viatrans - Meydanbey Grubu’nun bu düşünceyi benimsiyor olması. Öyle ki daha inşaatın ilk aşamasında mevcut çınar ağaçlarının bozulmuş ve yıpranmış olanlarının yerine büyük ölçekli yeni ağaçlar ekildi. Bir sonraki aşamada devreye giren ve bu araziye bitişik olan Ali Sami Yen Stadı’nın bulunduğu alanda da bu yaklaşımızı sürdürdük. Likör Fabrikası’nın önündeki alanla bütünleşen daha büyük ve kapsamlı bir kent parkını elde edebilmek adına, fabrikanın 8 4 S K Y L I F E B U S I N E S S 12 | 2013

rity now. It is both the investor’s belief and my belief that this structure will bring great richness to the social and cultural scene of Istanbul with its outdoor and indoor spaces alike.

You have two more large projects in Mecidiyeköy—the multiuse towers to be erected on the former site of the Ali Sami Yen soccer stadium and right next to it. I’m sorry to say that Mecidiyeköy is not one of my favorite places in Istanbul. I think the reason for this is the overpass crossing through it. Now, you are building large projects on those two great plots of land, and you have the opportunity to change that environment to some extent…

Most who live in Istanbul may not know this, but the area in front of the Liqueur Factory used to be a massive garden behind high walls. In the first stage of the project, we thought it very important to open up this area to the public as an urban park instead of planting a building on it. There isn’t a space in Mecidiyeköy outdoors where you can breathe some fresh air. We also aimed to restore the historic Liqueur Factory, which had been subject to great physical harm due to careless structural intervention, through a scientific reconstruction and transform it into a cultural building integrated with the green space before it. And we placed all the new buildings to the south, behind the factory. It greatly pleases us that the Viatrans–Meydanbey Group, the employer in charge of the Quasar project on this plot, has adopted this line of thought, such that in the very first stage of construction, large new trees were planted to replace the ruined and damaged sycamores that were there. In the next stage, we carried out a similar approach in the area adjacent to this plot, where the Ali Sami Yen stadium was located. The idea of leaving the area up to the level of the factory empty so as

Kentin bu bölgesi adına bunu çok önemli buluyorum. Şu anda dünyada bazı mimarlar, mimari ofisleri ve yaptıkları projeler aynen pop starlar gibi takip ediliyor.

Böyle olunca gelişmekte olan veya göze batmak isteyen ülkeler de bu mimarları kullanarak ikon binalar tasarlatıyor. Bu yapıların müthiş bir şekilde talep görmesi ileride mimariyi etkileyecek mi?

Etkiledi bile. Bugün hem Türkiye’de hem de diğer coğrafyalarda ve zaman zaman -benim içinde olduğum- pek çok eğitim kurumunda bu ikonların ortaya konmasıyla ilgili mimarlık programları yürütülüyor. Sermaye egemen sistemin üretim ve tüketim mekanizmaları içerisinde anlaşılabilir bir tutum bu. Ama kabullenmemiz ve kentler adına tek çıkar yol olarak benimsememiz şart değil. Gösteri toplumunun, yani “iyi olan her şey görünür” diyen bir toplumun bu tür ikonik yapılarla olan hesabı tam da böyle bir şey ve güncel mimariyi de etkiliyor. Bunun, yerinden kopuk, bulunduğu coğrafyayla ilişkisi olmayan ve her yere taşınabilir olduğu düşünülen bir mimarlık düşüncesi için uygun bir ortam olduğu iddia edilebilir ama kişisel olarak ilgimi çekmediğini söylemeliyim. www.emrearolat.com

to obtain a larger, more expansive urban park in combination with the space in front of the Liqueur Factory and designate it as a green space came up, and Torunlar Group, the investor, approached this idea very warmly. Now, we are designating a completely green urban park by joining these two spaces to create an area roughly three hundred meters long and eighty meters wide, or almost six acres. I consider this very important for this part of the city.

Some architects, architecture firms, and the projects they make are being followed today just as celebrities are followed. This being the case, developing countries, or countries that want to stand out, use these architects and have them design iconic buildings. Will the incredible demand for these buildings influence architecture in the future?

It already has. Architectural programs to produce such icons are being offered at several educational institutions in Turkey (which I am part of from time to time, too) as well as in other places. This is understandable behavior given the mechanisms of production and consumption in the system dominated by capital, but we need not accept it or adopt it as the only way for cities to go. The interest of the society of the spectacle—the society that proclaims anything great ought to be visible—in such iconic buildings is exactly this sort of thing, and it affects contemporary architecture, too. It could be said that this creates a suitable environment for a conception of architecture thought to be independent of place, unrelated to its surroundings, and transplantable anywhere, but I must say that it does not interest me, personally.

A MODERN AND AUTHENTIC PRESENTATION The pieces in the Istanbul Carpet Museum attached to the General Directorate of Foundations are exhibited according to modern museology requirements. As a museum specialist, I was more than pleased to note the way with which the artefacts were protected and exposed to be carried on to future generations. Observing the display units, lighting, humidity regulators, climatization systems all set following modern standards and the use of the touch-operated screens were a great source of content for me.

Türkçe’de bir deyimimiz vardır; çok gezen mi bilir, çok okuyan mı deriz. Bize yazmakla gezmek arasındaki ilişkiden bahsedebilir misiniz?

Bu mükemmel bir soru, zira “The Traveler, the Tower and the Worm: The Reader as Methaphor” (Gezgin, Kule ve Kurt: Bir Metafor Olarak Okur) adlı yeni kitabım çok kısa süre önce İngilizce olarak yayınlandı. Gezmek, okumak için kullanılan en temel metaforlardan biridir. Okuyucunun kitap sayesinde seyahat ettiği, çünkü her kitabın okur için bir dünya olduğu anlamına gelir. Bu çok eski bir metafordur: İçinde bulunduğumuz dünyada bizi çevreleyen her şeyi yazılmış bir kitap, içinde bizim de yazılı olduğumuz bir Alberto Manguel kitap gibi görürüz. Dolayısıyla çok gezmenin mi çok okumanın mı daha iyi olduğuna karar vermek fazlasıyla zor olurdu. Çünkü hayal dünyamızda ikisi birbiriyle örtüşüyor.

We have a saying in Turkish that goes, “Is it the well-traveled who is the wiser or is it the well-read?” Could you tell us about the relationship between writing and traveling?

That’s an excellent question because I have just published a new book in English titled “The Traveler, the Tower, and the Worm: The Reader as Metaphor.” Travel is one of the most essential metaphors of reading. That is to say, the reader travels through the book because, for the reader, the book is the world. This is a very old metaphor—we see all that surrounds us in our world as a book that has been written and in which we, too, are written about. So it would be very difficult to choose between whether it is better to travel or to read, because in the imagination, the two coincide.

İstanbul’a ilk gelişim bundan yıllar önceydi ve o ilk gelişte bile yanımda pek çok deneyim getirdim. Okulda edindiğim deneyimler; örneğin İspanyol şair Espronceda’nın öğrenmemiz gereken bir şiirinde “Bir yanda Asya, diğer yanda Avrupa ve orada karşımızda İstanbul” diyordu. Bu da aile arasında benim de Türk olabileceğim hakkındaki geleneksel konuşmaları akla getiriyor; büyükbabam Rusya’dan Güney Amerika’ya göçerken önce İstanbul’a gitmiş. İstanbul’u görür görmez âşık olmuş ve orada kalmak istemiş. Şiltecilik yapıyormuş ve şilteci olarak iş ararken izin kâğıtları gelince Arjantin’e gelmek üzere yola çıkmış. Eğer kalsaydı ben bugün Türkçe konuşuyor olacaktım ve belki de siz benimle bu mülakatı yapmayacaktınız.

whether you are Turkish or not. So I came to Istanbul for the first time many years ago, but even that first time I brought several experiences with me. The experience of school, for instance, when we had to learn a poem by the Spanish poet Espronceda, which goes, “[the group] …Sees Europe here, there Asia lies, and Stamboul in the front arise.” So that brings to mind the fact that in my family, there is a running story that I could have been Turkish—when my grandfather traveled from Russia to South America, he first came to Istanbul. And when he saw Istanbul, he fell in love with it and wanted to stay there. He was a mattress maker and he tried to find a job as a mattress maker, but then he got his papers and left for Argentina. If he hadn’t left, I would be speaking Turkish today and perhaps you would not be interviewing me.

You travel a lot. Do you always travel with your books?

Yes, always.

Neler okumak isteyebileceğimi düşünerek seçerim. Dedektif romanlarını çok sevdiğimden genellikle yanıma dedektif romanları alırım. Genellikle bir klasik veya bir şiir kitabı olur. Bir deneme yazısı olur. Örneğin Türkiye’ye bu gelişimde yanıma Osmanlı döneminde geçen bir dedektif romanı aldım. Çok beğendiğim, aynı zamanda Osmanlı tarihi üzerine “Lords of the Horizon” (Ufkun Efendileri) adlı bir kitabı da bulunan İngiliz bir yazarın kaleme aldığı Peygamber’in biyografisini aldım. Ayrıca Dante; her zaman yanımda Dante’nin bir kitabını taşırım. Bu seferki taşınabilir kütüphanemi oluşturan kitaplar bunlar.

Do you choose the books you take with you according to your destination?

I choose the books according to what I imagine I will want to read. Usually there are some detective novels, because I love detective novels. There is usually a classic or a book of poetry. There is usually an essay. For instance, now, I have come to Turkey with a detective novel set in Ottoman times.

I have come with biography of the Prophet [Muhammad] by an English writer I admire, who also wrote a book on Ottoman history called “Lords of the Horizon.” Also, Dante—I always carry a volume of Dante with me. So these books are my portable library for the time being.

Michael White, 1980’lerin sonunda Wisconsin’deki gastronomi macerasına Kendall Culinary Institute’te başlamış. İlk eğitiminin ardından Chicago’nun İtalyan tarzı en önemli restoranı Spiaggia’da, şef Paul Bartolotta’nun mentorluğunda bir buçuk senelik başarılı bir dönem geçirdikten sonra onun ayak izlerini İtalya’da takip etmeye karar vermiş. Bu izler şefi İtalya-Imola’daki Ristorante San Domenico’nun mutfağına, eski toprak İtalyan mutfağının piri Valentino Marcattilii’ye kadar götürmüş. Sonraki yedi sene boyunca White, İtalyan mutfağı konusunda akla gelebilecek her şeyi sorgulamış. Marcattilii ile çalışırken neredeyse tüm İtalya’daki geleneksel yaklaşımlardan yeni metotlara kadar birçok disiplini tanıma fırsatı bulmuş. 2000’lerin başında Amerika’ya dönen White, artık iyice demlenen İtalyan mutfağı tecrübesini Chicago’da sergilemeye başlamış. Michael White began his culinary adventure in the late ‘80s at the Kendall Culinary Institute in Wisconsin. After his first round of study, he spent one and a half successful years under the chef Paul Bartolotta at Spiagga, Chicago’s most important Italian-style restaurant, and decided to follow his mentor’s footsteps to Italy.

This led him to the kitchen of Ristorante San Domenico in Imola, Italy, and all the way to Valentino Marcattilii, who is considered the master of Old World Italian cuisine. In the seven years that followed, White investigated everything that appeared in his mind about Italian cuisine. While working with Marcattilii, he was able to gain familiarity with many disciplines from traditional approaches practiced all over Italy to new methods. White returned to the US in the early 2000s and started to show off his now considerable experience in Italian cuisine. Showing great care for select-

As the chef continues to launch and manage restaurants and kitchens everywhere from Hong Kong to London, he adheres to his signature approach to discipline, which is based on personal involvement—in every restaurant venture he is part of, he throws himself into the kitchen and involves himself in each detail from menu design to waitstaff form. For starters, there is one I have in mind that could brighten up the rest of your day, which I especially recommend to Turks who cling to the widespread local bias in favor of well-done meat. Served with pureed cream of mushroom, it consists of hand-minced, uncured chunks of sirloin with a dash of parmesan on top—the steak tartare.

Lamb shank is a familiar, traditional dish in Turkey. Here, they marinate it on a bed of polenta with lemon juice and zest, black pepper, and salt. After two-and-a-half hours of cooking, the shank is ready to serve—and to amaze your palate.

Finally, once you take in the ravioli made of a blend of specially produced flours combined with traditional Italian cheeses such as mascarpone and ricotta, you’re free to explore your own miniature Italy. As Fellini said, “‘Life is a combination of magic and pasta.”

Our lounge at Ataturk International Airport has recently been reopened, implementing a totally new concept developed with our catering partner, Turkish Do&Co. The new features are evident as one enters the lounge, where open spaces create a welcoming atmosphere. Access is simple— just scan the barcode on your boarding pass. There is also a staff counter where agents are available to deal with special needs or requests.

Once in the lounge, comfortable seats are available in multiple areas with different amenities and distractions. Both hot and cold food is always available at a number of stations throughout the facility, and they are changed regularly over the course of the day. Numerous conveniently located carts provide a wide selection of beverages. For those traveling with children, a special play area is provided, and those wishing to freshen up will find shower facilities available. Large windows provide plenty of natural light and a view to the airport operations beyond, and one section of the facility has a living century-year-old olive tree as its focus.
