Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone to invest in industrial future projects

Ahmet Hasyüncü, Chairman of Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone

Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone (OSB)’s 16 million dollars coast solar system investment is expected to generate 10 million kilowatt-hours electrical energy every year, beginning from 2015.

Hasyüncü, Chairman of Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone (OSB) defined the details of the project: “We imported the solar panels to establish 6.9 Mwp GES System” and continued his statement:

1.5 years stretch research and calculation process completed and Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone stepped into action for the activation of solar system. Ahmet

“Ground subsidence excavation is continuing at 120.000 square meters field to protect solar panels in case of possible earthquakes. As soon as excavation finishes

solar panels are going to be assembled. We are expecting to produce 10 million kilowatt-hours electrical energy through solar panels every year, starting from the march of 2015.” “We also completed a protocol to produce and gain another 10 Mw solar power plant in Kayseri within build, operate and transfer model. Process of this project is already started. Our aim is to be a leader and reference for other industrial zones with our 16 milyon Turkish liras cost projects for operating the biggest energy

source; sun, for electrical power production. All transmission lines are buried underground in Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone (OSB). We always make cost analysis and care for landscape while serving to the industrialists, therefore our country” Hasyüncü pointed out continuing administrative services such as; lack of substructure, landscape restoration, technological improvement, recycling, structural design, and traffic regulation in Kayseri OSB. “Waste water pipeline started to service in 2013

and Vocational Technical Education Center is open within needs of industrialists.” “Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone (OSB) has a crowded car traffic, so that we need to repair roads soon. Now we are trying to repair old water pipes before the renovation of asphalt coatings on the roads to make them therefore needs renovations. We are trying so hard to make Kayseri OSB; an easily accessible, nature friendly, industrially efficient zone.”

BOYTEKS, Turkey’s 10 on branded export, continues to grow with innovation th

Önder Honi, Vice Genral Manager of Boyteks: “We will continue to be our country’s pride in exports of mattress-ticking”

Önder Honi, Boyteks Vice General Manager

17

Among the activities of Boydak Holding in the textile sector, Boyteks, an important mattress ticking and upholstery fabric manufacturer of Turkey and the world, has been continuing to grow successfully in and outside Turkey by selling the innovations it has done in industrial textile with its own brand. Aim of the company, which recorded 10 percent growth in the export field last year, is to be the first preferred brand in the world. Boyteks Vice General Manager in Charge of Sales and Marketing, Onder Honi said, “We are continuing to grow successfully

18

with our successful business strategies we constantly pursue since the establishment of our company until today, our adaptation strength to the rapidly developing and changing world, our effective sales and marketing strategy. Our ‘Boyteks’ brand products have become number one choice of mattress and furniture manufacturers in more than 90 countries. Boyteks was among the biggest 100 exporters of Turkey last year. In addition, we were one of the top-10 firms in Turkey’s branded export. We will continue to be our country’s pride in this field”. Boyteks, operating with its bedding factory established in 2002 in Kayseri, upholstery factory established in 2003 and carpet factory which started production in Kayseri in 2011 actualized a growth of over 20 percent last year. Indicating that they plan

19

to realize their targets for year 2015 and to increase their share in the export pie, Onder Honi said their biggest aim is to make Boyteks a world brand. Underlining that they are meticulously continuing their works in line with this aim, Onder Honi said, “We are making breakthroughs with our innovations in the textile sector, our customers are very happy about these innovations, besides the increase in their sales and turnovers their company images are changing towards being an innovative firm, our competitors are following us very closely, we are facing many copying situations. Boyteks innovations made overwhelming impressions in the passing months among the exhibited products at ISMOB which is an important fair for our customers. We are participating in inter-

20

national fairs every year with three of our companies and we are exhibiting our R&D products and getting together with our customers. We are increasing our technological leaps even more with each passing day. Our mattress ticking factory is a facility that has the largest production capacity under one roof in the world. This facility of ours is not letting go of the first rows of the list in its sector with its jacquard woven and knitted production. Mentioning that their aim as Boyteks is to offer a concept service in their field, Onder Honi said, “We want consumers to find everything under the name of mattress ticking, upholstery fabric and carpet from us. Currently we are answering the knitted, woven, spacer, piping,

21

velour and toweling fabric needs in our mattress ticking facility. We are meeting upholstery fabric, warp knitting, outdoor fabrics, office furniture fabrics and velour needs in upholstery, and we carry fashion and aesthetic to home decorations within Turkey and abroad with carpet. New fabrics, all different then one another, we developed in our mattress ticking facility for comfortable and high quality sleep are presented to consumers by bed companies who are our customers by adding their own innovations and they are attracting very big attention. He indicated that they would continue to bring technical textile, innovation and technology to classic sleep products.

Feltturc moves to new facility

Using by products of the textile industry, Feltturc produces felt for the mattress industry and exports 60% of its production.

Mustafa Kiper, Export Manager of Fetturc

25

Deciding to expand its felt and wadding production, the company moved to a new facility where it combined spring and carcass production in one place. Export manager Mustafa Kiper introduced his company and activities.

On the year 2014 and felt production We have been producing springs and carcasses for two years. We carried our facilities to a new premise to increase our felt and wadding production. Felt production is important because it recycles wastes of textile factories and is environmental friendly. Besides we export 60 % of production and earn foreign currency. The quality of felt is directly dependent on the waste material used, the ability of workers, and the machinery used. One of the major factors of quality is to get to know about the needs of buyers and to produce felt accordingly.

26

On volumes of felt trade in Turkey Turkey is the largest producer of felt and wadding in the world. Even Chinese companies could not compete with Turkish companies in terms of both price and quality. We are both grateful for our customers and competitors. Middle east, north Africa and Europe are our major target markets including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Russia. We have deep and close contacts with our business partners because we try to know their needs and to provide the best quality for them at the most attractive conditions. We emphasize on delivering our services on time and at the most profitable terms.

Kayseri’s economy growing dynamically Prominent families of Turkish economy, such as Sabancı, Has, Dedeman, Hattat, Kurmel, Özyeğin, Karamanlargil, Boydak and Özilhan started out as small-scale merchants in Kayseri.

Thanks to the economic liberalization policies introduced in the 1980s, a new wave of merchants and industrialists from Kayseri joined their predecessors. Most of these new industrialists choose Kayseri as base of their operations. As a consequence of better infrastructures, the city achieved a remarkable industrial growth since 2000 and is one of the key cities that characterize the class of Anatolian Tigers, with a favorable environment present especially for small and medium enterprises. The pace of growth of the city was so fast that in 2004 the city applied to the Guinness Book of World Records for the most new manufacturing industries started

in a single day: 139 factories. Kayseri also has emerged as one of the most successful mattress and furniture-making hub in Turkey earned more than a billion dollars in export revenues. Kayseri Free Zone established in 1998, today has more than 43 companies with an investment of 140 million dollars. The Zone’s main business activities including; production, trading, warehouse management, mounting and demounting, assembly-disassembly, Merchandising, maintenance and repair, engineering workshops, office and workplace rental, packing-repacking, banking and insurance, leasing, labeling and exhibition facilities. with cost of $8 per square meter is one of the lowest cost land free zones in the world. Families such as Sabancı, Has, Dedeman, Hattat, Kurmel, Özyeğin, Karamanlargil, Boydak and Özilhan who started out as small-scale merchants in Kayseri became prominent actors in the Turkish economy. Some of these families set up their headquarters in cities such as Istanbul and Adana, nevertheless often coming back to Kayseri to invest. The city is served by Erkilet International Airport and the International Air Transport Association symbol for the airport is ASR. The airport is a short distance from the center of Kayseri. There are several flights per day to Istanbul, Turkey’s premium air transportation hub. Since the air transportation industry in Turkey is growing quickly, new flights from Kayseri to several other localities inside

and outside Turkey are soon to be expected. Kayseri is connected to the rest of country with railway service. There are four trains per day to Ankara. To the east there are two branches: one to Kars and Doğukapi toward Armenia, and another to Tatvan on the west shore of Lake Van. As the city is located in central Turkey, car and bus transportation are highly efficient. It takes approximately 3 hours to reach Ankara, approximately 3 hours to Mediterranean shores and 45 minutes to Cappadocia. The symbol of the city, Mount Erciyes, which is a notable ski center in winters and a trekker’s paradise in summers, is at only 30 minutes’ drive from the city center. The transportation within the city relies mainly on buses, and personal vehicles. A light rail transit (LRT) system called Kayseray was

constructed and completed by the end of 2009.

Bilal Karakus, General Manager of Dogus Ofset

Export’s share up in Dogus Offset Producing label for mattress manufacturers, Dogus printing house products are seen in 25 countries. General Manager Bilal Karakus, informed about his company and activities.

33

On history of the company Our company is 30 years old in the printing industry in Kayseri. In line with growing numbers of bed producers in the province, we focused on printing labels, booklets and other materials. Now we have a wide range of products in our portfolio. Companies began to export their products and we started to participate in the fair in abroad to enter in export markets. We are producing labels especially and mostly for mattress manufacturers for 20 years.

On the customers of the company We sell to almost all companies

operating in this sector. We have about 60 clients in our customer portfolio list. We try to serve major companies those that pay their dues and emphasize on quality not on price. We use imported materials and quality ink. We sell to both producers of economic and luxury beds. Label is important and is part of the bed’s quality and marketing. It is less costly but has high effect. At showrooms where about fifty beds are exhibited labels signal first about the image and the quality of the product. We mostly render service for high-end mattress manufacturers.

34

On exports of the products

On printing business

Bed industry is more powerful in Europe and in the USA. Producers are more loyal to their suppliers in those countries. We also want to establish sustainable relations with our clients and to work with professional companies. Our products are sold in more than 30 countries; about 25 of them are loyal customers. Though its volume is limited the label-printing segment accounts 15 % of our total production. We also produce other printed materials including brochures, booklets, catalogues and user manuals. We aim to be to sole supplier of bed manufacturers for their printed material needs.

We try to be a specialized printing house focused on mattresses. We try to get more work from our customers related with all kinds of printing, including cardboard printing.

We participate in fairs in Germany to promote our business. We got some new customers, one in Holland. We want to increase the number of buyers in abroad. Recently I made a cold visit to a company in Syria, I showed them our productions and in two hours time, we got a deal. Personal visits and contacts are important. A label costs about only one lira, but it’s added value on the product is priceless.

We participate fairs with an aim to find and develop new varieties, new materials and new techniques. We study to print on leather and special effect glossy printing. We try to attract attention.

On new investments, and plans for 2015 2014 was not a good year economically. We kept our sales though it was the worst year of the last 8 years. There were problems in neighboring countries, Syria, Iraq and Azerbaijan, though they are ideal target markets for us. We keep our investments for 2015, and bought three new machines. Now we are able to produce more fantastic printings.

Boyçelik stands for mattress comfort!

Erol Boydak: “A localization is eye-catching in mattress production in domestic market. Some provinces made progresses at this field and they gained ground but Kayseri is still the leader of this sector.”

Erol Boydak, General Manager of Boyçelik

37

As one of the leading companies in the mattress spring manufacturing in Turkey, Boyçelik has been continuing to increase mattress comfort. Talking about 2014 Mr. Erol Boydak, general manager of Boyçelik assessed the current situation of the sector, manufacturers and export potential of Turkey. “I guess that daily mattress production in Turkey accounts for 15 thousand units. Around 10 thousand of this figure is manufactured in Kayseri,” says Boydak and claims that there is no reason not to make it 30 thousand. Boydak answers questions of Sleep Well magazine with a professional way:

Can you make an evaluation about the current situation of the sector? The late 2014 and early 2015 period has passed more volatile than we could expect. The reason for this is the fluctuation in prices. Since we produce industrial products, we were affected more during this period. In the past when devaluation happened the Turkish Lira would lose against the Dollar. This would help us to be more competitive with the part less than raw materials. But now the money

of everybody was devaluated. All countries from Iran to Russia experienced this. An advantage has not been formed in the market for anybody. Even if your selling power has increased the purchasing power of your accepter has decreased. This balance made everything unchanged. The customers in Croatia, Russia, Iran and Europe have become to trade in their own regions. We cannot say that export business has ended, however, it decreased considerably. The countries, whose currencies lost ground against the Dollar, were affected from this scene and their adaptation to this situation has become painful. Turkey’s January export figures recorded a fast drop in general. We have been experiencing such a period now.

How do you think this situation will be formed in 2015? In fact, it is not easy to forecast this but I believe that the Turkish Lira will continue to lose ground. There is a nominal interest concept representing a rate from 0 to 10%. There is also another concept namely real interest net of inflation. Let’s say that the inflation rate is 8% and interest rate is 10%. The real interest rate of Turkey

38

means 2% then. We hear that the interest rates are high or low. This is not true. What is the scale to measure the rate? There is no such thing to correct everything by reducing the interest rates.

What contributions the mattress and furniture industry adds to Kayseri? Is this sector improving with the recent activities? First of all, Kayseri has an automation-oriented production understanding. This brings high turnover and more units. But the distance has become a problem. There is localization in the furniture industry in domestic market. Izmir has made a progress recently at this manner. Inegol had already made it before. But Kayseri still maintains its leadership in the sector. The main reason of this is the proximity to the raw material sources. The grouping of raw material suppli-

ers such as our company pulls the costs down and leads the way for supplying raw materials cheaper for the manufacturing companies. It seems that Kayseri will not lose its advantage at this manner in the mid-term.

pieces. Probably 10 thousand of this potential is produced in Kayseri. This total figure can easily be doubled.

I should say that we did not act in the mattress business as early as we did for the furniture industry. The production cost of mattresses is higher than the cost of soft group furniture. The mattress industry is a difficult investment field requiring manufacturing line and automation systems. Companies have started to consider the mattress business as the second job because furniture promises better profit volumes. Some intelligent companies noticed the gap and started to be expert in the mattress business. I guess the daily quantity in Turkey’s mattress manufacturing is 15 thousand

Mattresses are given free as a promotional item with furniture in some countries. This is not right. It is always pronounced that one third of life is spent in bed. Such a considerable product shouldn’t be cheap. According to a report we prepared in 2010, a sum of 20 dollars is spent for mattress per capita in Canada but it is 3.82 dollars in Turkey.

Mattress shouldn’t be a “promotion” product

You see in mattress commercials that a human is lying with a straight spine. There is no such thing. A mattress will not change the shape of your body and will react against that. It is impossible.

39

There was an idea in Turkey that a foam mattress is not an ideal mattress. But now we see that expert manufacturers prove that the idea was not correct. The customers’ awareness should be raised at this point.

A as spring manufacturer, how do you evaluate spring and mattress relations? A mattress is a product bearing some deadlocks in itself. Let’s say that we used the motto of “we spend one third of our lives in bed” in marketing. We should fill in this idea too. How should such an important item be for the benefit of our health? Then come the fabric, stuffing materials and springs forward. Fabric is one of the most important materials of mattresses for visuality and for other reasons. A lot of technologies based on R&D studies have been developed in mattress-ticking fabrics. When these come to a certain level then people start considering the inner part of a mattress. Now people have to think two alternatives. Should it be spring or foam? They mostly tend to choose according to prices. When springs become more expensive they tend to foam or vice versa. But spring is preferred more in Turkey because it is less expensive. The higher the springs are, the less stuffing materials are used. This is a correct tending. There are a lot of products related

to the common spring types of pocket and bonnel springs. We have 5 different alternatives only as bonnel springs. They have fairly big differences between each other. There is a feature of number of spring per square meter. This count is asked when buying mattress in Europe and America. There are some mattresses in England with 10 thousand springs per square meter. It increases the comfort.

Individuality at the forefront in mattress We have been experiencing 4 ages in marketing. We had experienced the production age in 1980s. We had sales age in 1990s and marketing in 2000s. Right now we have been experiencing consumer-drive age. We develop customized products according to the needs of the consumer. If a person is suffering back pain and needs hard mattress, we have to offer

solution accordingly. There is no such thing as excellent mattress but ideal mattress for the user. Companies in Turkey manufacture their own springs and they believe that this is the correct system. This is one of the biggest problems we are having. They think that they can buy machinery for cheaper prices. But that’s not the case. There is a synchronization of spring machine in itself. It is accounted what kind of a load it can carry from the standpoint of health costs. The fibers come through her and the wire enters from there and the cost increases. I mean the work is not easy as it appears. Boydak Group has solved this very intelligently. The Group has separated the spring, foam and fabric from each other and has set up a specialty team at each field. Companies operating with this method can easily develop and grow.

ERSAN Metal, a respectful name in furniture industry

41

“Boxspring and adjustable mattress sector is at a faster growing sector compared to the regular mattress industry”

Having a vast business experience of 30 years Ersan Metal Household Product Industry was founded in Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone and now is continuing its production activities in Free Zone on a new production facility of 13,500m2 closed and 70,000m2 open modern sites engaged in production. An official of the company outlined the firm and its operations:

“Assessment of 2014 2014 was a successful year for Ersan Metal. We got very good feedbacks from Sleepwell and Ismob fairs we attended. We have also received requests from the countries we have not markets yet. We took our first

steps for our store abroad.

Our target year 2015 One of our biggest goals in 2015 is to add new store chains, in addition to the store we have opened in Germany, and to make our A&E brand in Europe a well known and a reliable brand.

R&D R&D and innovation studies are very important for a company. We are working in this direction. In R&D activities we usually focus on where we are experienced in metal subjects. We move with the idea of “How we increase the comfort of people”. In this respect, we carry out the R&D activities.

42

Aynur Erman, General Manager of Ersan

Boxspring and Adjustable Mattress Sector Status Boxspring and adjustable mattress sector is at a faster growing sector compared to the normal mattress industry. Especially this high level comfort of adjustable boxsprings, which are popular in Europe, will spread to other continents over time because we can see the results in the international fairs which we participate. Now we welcome demands from the Arab countries that were asking 3-4 years ago if this was a medical bed. The differences between regular beds and adjustable beds: At the moment the adjustable beds are not common in Turkey. But, on the interest we have seen in the local exhibition we can say that for the next 2-3 years also from Turkey we will have more demands.

Sleep culture is not an invention of modern times Sleep. Up to this very day its nature is a mystery and we still don’t really understand its function

and effect, but one thing is certain: sleep is very important in our daily life.

adjustable beds will replace the normal beds in Turkey, as well as in Europe.

Through long years, the human being with all his unique habits and needs has continuously adapted the bed to his standards of well-being and put it into the center of his need for relaxation and lifestyle.

Moving the adjustable beds in the head and feet side independently of each other this provide the person an extra special comfort. For example, while watching tv you do not need a pillow under your head in the adjustable beds. You can easily monitor your remote control by the head side to the appropriate level in a relaxed way.

Now, people do not use the bed only for sleeping. When reading a book, watching TV , they spend their time in bed. Make dream beds of top processing quality for people with high expectations – timeless and stable in value, uncompromising and absolutely produce. This has been a requirement for top qualified adjustable boxsprings. So, in the coming years the

FORM SUNGER ups capacity with new facilities Building a new production facility of 200 thousand sqm by investing 50 million dollars in Incesu, Kayseri, Form S端nger (Form Foam Company) aims to increase its capacity by 60%.

One of the largest foam suppliers to the bed industry, Form S端nger increases its production volume by investing 50 million dollars. Having 80 customers in 30 countries, aims to double its exports this year. Mehmet Ali Yoruk, general manager, informed about foam production industry.

On recent developments in the industry and his companies position Lately, we have realized a real growth by hitting our targets. Thanks to the recent fluctuations in currency rates the growth was more than the nominal. Bed industry in Turkey has an average growth about 6 to 7%. For 8 years we, as Form foam, are the leader in the industry among 20 companies in the sector. Our market share in to-

tal market is about 27%. We have completed construction works of our new factory in Incesu, that has 42 thousand sqm of covered area on 200 thousand sqm land. It cost 50 million dollars and increases our capacity by 60 %.

240 million sales in 2014 Our sales volume in 2014 was totaled to 240 million. We want to go up, thanks to the export department that was founded in

45

2013. Presently we have about 80 customers in 33 countries, whose share was 10 % of our production. We want to double up our exports, which is about 5 million dollars this year.

become deformed due to their low quality materials. So, the demand shifted to inner spring mattresses. Nevertheless, they turned out to be uncomfortable. When it comes to today’s foam mattresses, they offer variety of comfort options. For his reason, we put emphasis on R&D, such as the utilization of visco elastic materials.

On Turkey’s position in the usage ratio of foam beds compared to other countries In Europe, more than half of the beds are foam type of mattresses. In 2006 we started to produce visco products. Our country is in the similar position as Portugal and Greece. In south European region foam beds account about 35 %, unfortunately in Turkey it is still below 10 %. We work hard with our sister company Istikbal to increase the share of foam. It slowly goes up.

The usage of foam mattresses will be doubled. In line with the rising welfare standards, the usage of foam mattresses is increased in the North and

the Central Europe in particular. Our growth potential in Turkey could be compared to that of South Europe. We estimate that foam mattresses usage in Turkey will reach at 35 percent from the current 10 percent, that is, the usage of foam mattresses will be doubled. About 30-35 years ago, foam mattresses were used but they

Visco-elastic materials turned out to be healthy and human friendly particularly for bed-ridden patients. Our clinical studies reveal the fact that visco materials have been instrumental to cure the resultant bedsores of the patients. ViscoForm was especially developed for use on mattresses, pillows to improve sleep quality and help you fall asleep sooner with less tossing and turning in bed. The pressure relieving material of ViscoForm is a sound solution to relieve mattress related sleep problems, and helps in the treatment of conditions attributed to diminishing

the quality of life like lower back hernia, rheumatism, neck and back pains.

Could you further elaborate on your R&D activities? By means of PCM (Phase Changing Materials), we are able to upgrade the cooling comfort and usage of foam mattresses to a great extent. As for the anti bacterial materials, we conducted a series of technical studies on anti bacterial materials by cooperating with Sabancı University, thereby producing anti bacterial foams for the industrial usage. Furthermore, we have utilized from aloe vera, as a natural and anti-oxidant additive, during the production processes of foams.

Low Emission The regulations related to synthetic materials have always been updated at international platform and all laws for emission are getting stricter. We have been continuing our activities for lower emission for all raw materials we use. Among these are the change of primary and secondary raw materials and revising the production line for lower emission materials.

Compression Set Since we are an export-oriented firm and since our products are shipped with roll-pack system, the deformation of the products should be minimized after roll-pack process and should be turned to their pre-packaging positions. That’s why we undertake monomer-based works.

Hyper Soft Pu Foam We have been realizing industrial manufacturing of The Hyper Soft Pu Foam product used especially by the sleep products sector and owned by few companies in the world. We have been conducting improvement operations at pilot scale about the product and the developments are followed up closely.

Phenolic Yellowing Although phenolic yellowing is not a completely eliminable problem, it is a problem which can be reduced or postponed. In order the problem

Mold Bedding We have realized mold mattress production with a formulation we discovered with a special mixture. Thanks to this system we are continuing works to qualify mold mattress production which is getting more common worldwide. The little revisions are planned with R&D studies before it is put on mass-production.

Equivalent Products Experiments We have continuously been conducting raw material operations at pilot scale in our company. Our

47

purchasing department and supplier companies are integrated for product improvements and obtaining if the product is not available with raw material activities made by our R&D department. As our suppliers can come to us by offers we can also make equivalent works for production of the product depending on literature works.

Bed Design Product development works are also carried out by our R&D department. 3D drawing programs such as AutoCAD and Solid Works used to meet customer demands. The main purpose at these designs is to increase comfort and provide maximum ergonomic shape could be in harmony with human body. The foam combinations used are as important as drawings managed by the expertise of our company.

What would you say about Kayseri and the mattress industry?

Turkey can be the supplier of Europe

The industry of Kayseri has been grouped in some sectors. The most important ones of these are the furniture and mattress industries. As far as I know, there are around 1000 companies in the Kayseri Organized Zone. One third of these companies are composed of furniture and mattress companies. Kayseri has been a hub for these sectors. 27% of the total foam production is realized by us and over 25% by other companies in Kayseri. This means that more than half of Turkey’s total foam production is produced in Kayseri. This contributes to employment and to the sector.

We also expect support in exports because freight is a big problem for us. Despite this fact, we realize exportation around 10%. Poland, for instance, has developed considerably in the mattress and furniture industries. As far as I know, they have a production volume of 9 billion dollars. They export around 7 billion worth of that production. They are at the position of being Europe’s supplier. The manufacturing slid to East Europe for the labor costs and production costs became expensive in Central Europe. Turkey has a potential at this sector and we have quality and clean working principles and discipline. We can even compete with China at this issue. Our delivery of quality products in a short time makes us competitive in international markets.

Unregistered economy is one of the major problems of the sector. This should be solved immediately.

Tesla: A new bed fabric of Comfytex Having magnetic properties Tesla fabrics improves blood circulation during sleep.

Selim Sahin, Facility Manager of Comfytex

New products in fabrics demanded by bed industry are flourishing. Comfytex is one of the companies launching new series for the bed industry. Selim Sahin, Comfytex business manager introduced Tesla and research activities in his company.

On performance of the company in 2014 and expectations for 2015 It was good for us. Daily production was up to 9 tons and shifts were three. We got certificate of ecology, organized an R&D team and developed our production planning process, reduced stoppages and

51

wastes. 45 machines are operational in our factory of 8,5 thousand sqm. In 2015 we aimed higher sales in exports by selling more countries. Our target is to increase the share of exports up to 70 %. It is now 50%. We started a new project to produce industrial hygienic bed fabric. Fabrics will be produced more hygienically in our factory thanks to new measures we have taken. It will be launched in Interzum fair.

On export activities We sell our products to 35 countries. We have to focus on major buyers for sustainable business relationships. Sustainability requires fast delivery and balanced prices. America and Brazil are our major targets for 2015. We participate in Interzum fair in Germany.

On R&D and production development departments Our latest products are in unique series that include detox, alphazone, multivitamin, air plus fabrics.

Detox There are some substances which are available in everything that we eat and they are harmful. They are named as toxins. These toxic substances partly come from the water and food; partly occurs in body. Toxic substances called free radicals that results in the contamination of nature enter into the body by inhalation, food and beverages. Diseases occur from physiological balance disorder and toxin accumulation in the body. So the way of disease prevention is to equilibrate the physiological balance and eliminating toxin from the body. Detox progress is eliminating accumulated

52

toxins from the body. Our body does it naturally. However, conditions such as malnutrition caused by the modern life, air pollution, sleeplessness, inaction, little consumption of water put our body to trouble in our body’s self-perpetuation process. As a result of this hard effort our body both redundantly works off energy and disrupts its functions because of nonfulfillment of the self-perpetuation. Detox ticking is a product made by mixture of the different ceramic and minerals. The mixture of the minerals creates FIR (Far-Infrared Rays). Far Infrared Rays are the part of invisible solar rays’ spectrum. Besides they are known as biogenetical rays too. Biogenetical rays supply the health and growing of the cells in plants, animals and human. Human body is composed of 70 percent water by weight. FIR causes the vibration of water molecules. Far Infrared Rays improve circulation and health by activates and ionize water molecules in our cells and blood. Far Infrared Rays enters in cells and create the water molecules vibration. Waves produce the atomical molecule vibrations. Energy conversion occurs through absorption. FIR enters the cells under the skin layer. Cells are activated. Capillaries enlarge. The Detox effect is created by fragmentation accumulated toxin.

Alphazone Electrical signals spread from the brain can be measured by receivers connecting to the head. The signals measured by the tool called Electroencephalogram are called brain waves. Alpha waves locating in these waves provide comfort, awareness and receptivity. When alpha waves are normal, the body performance is saved and calm-

ness and tranquility are provided. According to the experiments, it is stated that subjects who closed their eyes spread the brain waves.

Multivitamin The importance of sleep for a healthy life is rather great. A quality sleep brings a healthy life in its wake. Sleep provides the human body physically and psychologically rebuilds itself. Body rests and rebuilds itself in the sleep environment. Tiredness, stress, environmental pollution, sun and

malnutrition cause the skin aging. The secret of having a healthy skin supplies with multivitamins’ support. The body’s nutrition on a bed including vitamin complex and having a healthy skin while sleeping is possible with Multivitamin ticking. Multivitamin ticking with thanks to included vitamin complex moistens the skin during sleeping, keeps safe from the free radicals and helps renewing of the cells. Vitamins contained in Multivitamin ticking have regenerative effects on the skin.

53

Air Plus Air Plus ticking has the feature of ion-exchange property through mineral, ion and natural active substances that include in it. The ion-exchange property affects the oxygen and the hydrogen in air and attribute to odors, bacteria and detrimental substances. It then obliterates the factors with the strong oxidation reaction. Air Plus ticking obliterates the odors such as cigarette smell, body odors, smell of sweat and frowziness through unbundle and chemical and physical absorption and has air-cleaning property. Air Plus ticking with its skin-friendly texture create a healthier environment for sleeping by obliterating the evil and harmful molecules.

On the fabric named Tesla It is a fabric having natural magnetic properties. Avicenna has found that magnetic stones reduce pains

and improve blood circulation. Tests made in the university showed that it improves sleep quality. Ferro in hemoglobin that carry oxygen to cells, were attracted by magnetism thus provide comfort.

On customer response We have been getting positive responses from our customers for

six months. Serious feedbacks are coming for our quality and patterns. Our customers in Europe are more conscious on quality than the ones in domestic market. We are also trying to educate our customers, bed producers, in the details of application of our fabrics help them to improve their production and product qualities.

Mert Makina exports to more than 60 countries 54

Mert Makina, one of the leading mattress machinery manufacturers of Turkey, ships its over 1000 variety of competitive machinery to over 65 countries.

Starting with mattress tape edge machines Mert Makina continued its operations by manufacturing mattress and quilting machinery according to the needs of the industry in 2000s. Mr. Mustafa Nebi Dogan, general manager of the company, states that they have been manufacturing five different manufacturing lines and adds that they have been shipping their products to over 65 countries over the world. In an exclusive interview to Sleep Tech magazine Mr. Dogan stressed that R&D studies were vitally important for them in manufacturing fast and functional innovative products as MertTech. Details:

First of all, could you inform us about Mert Makine? How long have

more than 65 countries for nearly 20 years. We have more than 1000 machineries working in mattress production all over the world.

Mustafa Nebi Dogan, General Manager of Mert Makina

you been serving the industry? Mert Makina is planted 6.000 square meters in Kayseri in 1994. We are produce Mattress and Furniture Production Machineries and are exporting these products to

First time, Mert Makina has entered to the mattress production by manufacturing the mattress tape edge machine in 1900’s. Shortly after, we manufactured our first mechanic multi needle-quilting machine. We are one of the first manufacturers of multi needle quilting machines in Turkey. During the years, we have added step-by-step different kind of machines to our product range. When it comes to 2000s, according to time’s requirement we have started to manufacture automatic machines. Now we are first and only manufacturer that be able to

55

establish complete mattress manufacturing facility in Turkey thanks to full range of the mattress machineries under the same roof.

is still used from Middle East to Europe, from Far East to America. In the last 10 years, automatic mattress tape edge machines get more popularity. These automatic machines that are preferred by many mattress manufacturers, both sew mattresses in every size fast and easily and maximize the quality with the edge tape’s smooth appearance on the mattress. Used parts of machine, special automatic slow down system in the corner, antistatic belts are the distinguishing features of Mert Makina from the other brands. For that reason, Mert Makina’s automatic mattress tape edge machine is the most preferred machine in the sector.

Could you brief us about your machines and their features? Mattress machineries can be divided in 5 different segments like; quilting machines, tape edge machines, coiling machines, packing machines, automatic production lines. Mert Makina has the widest mattress machinery segment in Turkey. That is one of our most important features that we are able to manufacture complete mattress manufacturing facility. Generally in our sector, mattress machinery producers manufacture either spring machines or quilting machines or the other mattress machines like packing machines, tape edge machines, border machines, etc.

1. Computerized Multi Needle Quilting Machine (Lock StitchChain Stitch) Mert Makina is one of the first quilting machinery producers in Turkey. We have 2 kinds of computerized quilting machines for mattress and soft furniture production as chain stitch and lock stitch. The most important feature of Mert Makina’s machines is that they have both strong parts and special software program. Siemens, Ina, Skf, Lenze, Bonfigrioli,.. These are our important business partners

3. Mattress Packing Machine (Automatic or Manuel) and they raise the value of our quilting machines. We offer also panel and border cutting machine that works with perfect compliance behind all chain and lock stitch quilting machines, thanks to its high speed and millimetric sensitivity.

2. Tape Edge Machine (Automatic or Manuel) Manual mattress tape edge machines are one of the most essential machine in mattress manufacturing sector. Manual mattress tape edge machine of Mert Makina

In the point of automatic mattress packing machine, we claim that we are the best manufacturers in Europe. Mert Makina’s automatic mattress packing machine which is known and proved itself, is nowadays in using in mattress manufacturing each corner of the world. Our prominence is so high that our customers don’t ask as automatic mattress packing machine, they ask by saying directly our product code “MMS-2200”. Manual mattress packing machine still responds to the needs of low capacity manufacturers or special product manufacturers.

56

4. Bonnell Coiling Machine & Bonnell Coil Assembly Machine 10 years ago, Mert Makina had started to manufacture coiling and assembly machine just to complete full range of the mattress machineries under the same roof. In the following years, we developed these 2 machines according to the sectorial demand and our experience. As a result of the high demand, we have doubled the capacity of this section in 2000s. Now, we are working on transforming the bonnell-coiling machine together with bonnell coil assembly machine to an automatic machine and also we will present a pocket spring machine on sale in the next year.

5. Automatic Mattress Production Lines In the last 10 years, Mert Makina has concentrated to automatic mattress production lines and automatic solution systems. We are involved in many important and selected mattress production project and we established a lot of automatic mattress production lines in many parts of the world. We design most appropriately the project of automatic mattress production lines according to the demands from the customers. We sell not only machines we also work together with our customers such as business partners and share our know-how with them. Apart from all these segments, we also produce mattress border machines, roll fabric cutting machines, spacer machines, and spring frame fatigue & grinding machines in line with the demands from the sector.

Your company produces machines which have different characteristics; adhesive and bonnel springs machines. What are the advantages of having such a wide product range? Our most important advantage

is that we are the unique company who produce full range of the mattress machinery under the same roof. We are able to supply almost %90 mattress production machineries therefore we can prepare “KEY TURN mattress factory projects. For that reason, today a lot of new companies choose Mert Makina. The profit of our customers is also that they have only one contact person for all mattress production machines. They know each other starting from the request for quotation during the full time of using the machines. Therefore they save their precious and costly time.

What kind of R&D path do you follow when you produce your machinery and automation systems? Research and development is indispensable for Mert Makina. Our current situation demonstrates our improvement during the last 20 years. Moreover we have a separate R&D department. To concentrate the R&D workings, we located this department separately from the production, within the structure of Mert Makina but in a completely independent area. This independent working area is named as MertTech. Thanks to this R&D team, we are consistently improving our

current machines according the requests of our customers and the ever-changing needs of the sector. So we are able to work on innovative products, which are more speed and functional.

What you think about the mattress machines manufactured in Turkey? Could you tell us about developments in the industry? In the beginning, Turkish manufacturer started with manual machines in small ateliers. These machines which were manufactured based on European machines, have responded to the needs of the sector in that day. That was similar for Mert Makina’s process of development. Even then Kayseri was a manufacturer center of mattress and furniture and in regarding to this requirement, we have started 20 years ago as our first step with manual tape edge machines. At the same period, manual tape edge machine was followed from manual packing machine, some mattress border machines and some supportive machines to the sector. After these sectorial developments, the first mechanical quilting machine was produced by just two companies in

57

Turkey– one of these two improvers was Mert Makina. Since that time, the Turkish machinery manufacturers were hard competitors for the European machinery manufacturers. High prices, uncommunicative attitudes about technical services and supplying spare parts’ difficulties were negative factors, why the Turkish mattress manufacturers decided the domestic machines. The local demand was so high – about to 50 mechanical quilting machine was yearly sold by Mert Makina. That was an important milestone for our growth and our current popularity. Nowadays, you can find our machines nearly in all local mattress manufacturers. The next development was - according the automation trend in the world – about the automatic machines. 10 years ago, Mert Makina interpreted this trend as starting signal and began to manufacture the automatic tape edge machine, automatic packing machine and computerized quilting machines. The first computerized multi needle-quilting machine in Turkey was manufactured 5 years ago by Mert Makina.

Observing the mattress sector, Turkey has no more not only a central position for raw materials. Today, Turkey has also for the mattress machinery sector the same title. Thanks to its brands, companies and its perception of quality the Turkish products are demanded from a lot of mattress producers worldwide - from Europe to Africa and from Asia to America. Why do Turkish machines have popularity in the worldwide mattress production sector? We have popularity because we combine the advantages of Europeans and Chinese manufacturers. Sure, we

can’t still compete with Chinese prices because we don’t compare our machines’ quality with them. Our quality goes head to head with the European’s. That means we are the best choice who combines best quality with reasonable price. You can be sure that all over the World in all mattress factories Turkish machines are in using. Besides our quality and cost advantages, our flexible and wide after sales services are also a sales argument.

Turkey has realized some great success in manufacturing mattress

58

machines. Are there real differences between made in Turkey and other origins of machinery? As we mentioned before, the manufacturers from Far East are completely focused on low prices, not on quality. Because of this wrong focus, the lifecycle of their machines is shortened. In the opposite of that Turkish manufacturers are focused on quality, so we can give long years warranty thank to raw materials with best quality - all electrical equipment from European and iron steal from Turkey. In addition, qualified workforce is one of the most important factors for our qualified production. On the other side, when we look at the European and American side, we see clearly that the manufacturers decrease their capacity and they have to reduce their R&D budget. We forecast that they haven’t anymore added technical innovations to their machines. This helps us to catch their technical stand. In the meantime, they desire our machines under their private label. Even some of them offer us to sell their brands. We know very well that we have some lack about the automation and machinery design but we will become one of the most important centers of mattress machinery industry latest in 5 years.

What should be done to produce better quality machinery and development of the sector? First of all, machinery producer should know the needs and requests of the mattress producers. During these efforts, we always aim to get more quality on our machines; these will boost the quality of the mattress and hereby the needs of the mattress producers are answered. One of the most important and also the most costly production factor for mattress producers – actually in the entire sector – is

the workforce. We should be aim always to minimize this costly factor. Our target is to produce the machines with more automation and fewer workforce – this effort leads to raise up the performance and achievement of the mattress producers. This means that machine and automation should be designed to make life simpler – to give you the ability to make things faster, better, wide range of specialized equipment in the mattress industry the conditions and requirements of day. In addition to this automation process, we should consider its design and ergonomic in the aesthetic concerns. The offered technical service takes also an important place to improve the sector.

Is there anything you would especially like to mention? In all over the world, the mattress sector is getting more develop-

ment. Turkey plays an important role in all this development. Our geopolitical position, high quality of raw materials and components of mattress, flexible technical service mentality make Turkey successful. By these factors, if we spend more effort in differentiation, we will be unique and indispensable in the mattress sector. In this point, the starting point of Sleep Tech magazine in Turkey has a great importance. This magazine contains a lot of Turkish producers of the mattress sector, with their know-how and experience together – so Turkey will be able to get a main position in the world not only by the raw materials but also by the machinery sector. Turkey’s collective target should be the acceptance of “MADE IN TURKEY” labels – the customers should know the quality under these brands.

Metal Matris to hold on R&D projects

59

Metal Matris to keep working on R&D projects for its new spring line. Metal Matris, one of the biggest mattress spring producer companies in Turkey, is ready to launch a new spring collection line in 2015. Mahmut Öztürk, International Trade Manager of Metal Matris, informed us about activities of the company and made industrial considerations. He defined the specialties of the mattresses both popular in Turkey and worldwide, “Latest researches indicate that spring mattresses are preferable in Turkey at a rate of 80% as is the case for Europe and the U.S.A. As for foam rubber mattresses are preferable in oil producing countries. Both foam rubber or spring mattresses are sold evenly in smaller countries.”

interview with Mahmut Öztürk. Full text of the interview follows:

“Against all odds exportation was accomplished. We made investments on export business. The activities were not beyond expectations. Our main products pocket and bonnell spring and spring wire. We invested for high tech pocket spring produc-

Can you make a consideration for the recent situation of the industry and market? “Because of the volatility of the dollar; the markets are having a hard time recently. People stop buying to prevent failures during volatile terms. Commercial traffic is affected and dealings are postponed; because no one knows what will happen. Most of Arabic Countries, Russia and commonwealth countries have money shortage. Thus transferring money has a lot of restrictions. To sum up, everything is pending.”

How was exportation in 2014?

tion. We made some marketing plans to reap the fruits of investment and we achieved. We have bigger targets for this product. Pocket spring is a flexible, satisfying and demand retailed product.” “Anyone can acquire a differential product by the way of changing flexibility. In this sense we serve our bulk products, for furniture or mattress manufacturers. Our prior and major job is to supply bulk products. Products are simply flexible and favored in global industries. We are improving our new products along with bright ideas to satisfy demand.”

What are Metal Matris Company’s recent activities about this subject? “Our activities are not about product development department that enhances existing products. Our operations occur within the

R&D activities. We have capacity planning calculations about pocket spring. Sizes are also noted for spring wire. We make strict calculations for them all. Spring buyers need to produce or buy the rest of the materials to produce mattress or furniture. Carbon composition, resistance and sizes are important

for springs. We keep studying on R&D for some new products. We are going to present them to clients at Interzum Fair in Germany in May 2015. This fair is like the center of the business world.” Having fun while manufacturing “Pocket spring manufacturing

involves stiffening cloth. It has differential weights in grams. Product named “Needle Punch” is not very popular in its segment. It is fundamentally a very soft and nice product. But it is sensitive. Therefore, production efficiency is low and the cost is high. Garment characteristics are softness and transparency. As a result it’s flexible and clear. It’s not for customer observation but enjoyable for manufacturers. We care for manufacturers to enjoy the process.”

Can you spot the usage of mattress techniques globally? “When we say globally, There are two groups of type of production of mattresses: Inner spring and non inner spring. The usage changes by geography, culture, and climate. Every country has its own choices. If the petroleum is

cheap, foam rubber mattresses are popular. Spring mattresses are not popular in Africa. Costs are expensive for them. In Europe latex boosted lately but spring mattresses are still the most popular. Pocket spring mattresses are in demand. We can easily say that spring mattresses are preferred at a rate of 70%.” Spring mattresses are the most popular at a rate of 80% in Turkey. Mahmut Öztürk, International Trade Manager of Metal Matris, finalized his brief as a summary, “Small countries can be different but, in Europe and the U.S.A. spring mattresses are preferred mostly. Rates and tables are similar. Spring mattresses are the most popular at a rate of 80% in Turkey.”

Hüseyin Budak, General Manager of Reform Sünger

Reform invests in recycled foams Reform foam company has been producing rebounded bondex foams using by-product of production processes on its factory of 13.5 thousand sqm., 6.5 thousands sqm. of which is closed. “We have a daily capacity to process 8 tons of waste products and 500 meter cube foam cutting. We have been serving to furniture, bed and automotive industries for two years,” says Huseyin Budak, general manager of the company. The company expands its investments in its present facilities in Incesu organized industrial zone to produce

formed foam out of waste products. The company is also the first in Turkey having all necessary permissions and certification for ecologic impacts in its field of operation. “Since they are more economical and more ergonomic than other kinds, bondex foam should be used in the mattress manufacturing, I believe. We try to develop our products even more with investing in research and development activities,” Mr. Budak concluded.

ALLBECO supplies innovative raw materials for mattress manufacturers

Selcuk Varl覺 Managing Director of Allbeco

Quality of a product is dependent on its raw materials and the way it is manufactures. ALLBECO guarantees the first part of quality and innovative products; it sells quality and innovative raw materials that the mattress industry needs. Selcuk Varli, Chairman of Board, answered questions about their operations in detail:

On foundation of Allbeco Seven years that I spent in the bedding sector showed me that the mattress sector is a growing market. In the sense of that I saw material and production shortages in emerging markets. And we realized that companies want to do something new but they are not able to find enough new materials source in the mar-

69

ket that’s why they were not able to move out from standard mattresses. We have seen local manufacturers lovely way they sell their products on the domestic market but they could not have very good focus on export markets. Therefore we have established this company to sell local suppliers products to abroad, and to bring new products from international markets to local market.

What kind of products do you sell in the market and how is your sales organization? ALLBECO is supplying all the raw materials necessary for mattress industry. In parallel to the development of the mattress industry we are doing product presentations and selling materials according

to domestic and overseas market expectations. Our principal philosophy is to buy from the world and to sell to the world. Of course we want to sell the products in the domestic market to overseas markets in an effective manner would like to contribute to the country exports. Companies use different materials according their regions. For example Africa region mostly produce foam mattress and they have started to produce spring mattress newly. So, when we offer them all necessary materials for spring mattress production in the same time we offer them pocket spring and visco foam which is new for them and next level of spring mattress production. Therefore they prefer to work with us because we give them more than their expectations.

Advantage of natural Products One third of our lives spend in sleep. Healthy sleep has direct effect on the psychology of the people. People mostly are aware of the facts and are keen on their choice on the most helpful product. In parallel of this, ALLBECO has focused on innovative products necessary for healthy sleep. Firstly we signed a contract with LATEXCO company and has started selling of latex foam. Then we have introduced natural bedding materials with local market and Middle East and bring horsehair, camel hair, cocofelts and sea grass pads. If we will give you a few examples of these are latex foam is gotten with a natural property obtained from the milk of the rubber tree. Due to the its air circulation prop-

70

erty, it is allowing to keep always fresh and supporting all body with same pressure which makes medical effect on the mattress. Latex foams has 10 years warranty for its anti collapse property. For example Horsehair, the most expensive mattresses made by horsehair in world bedding sector. Its air circulation abilities that prevent perspiration and act as air conditioner. Because of its property that gives bonnell spring effect on human body. Camel Hair protects from cold in winter and protect from heat in the summer. Seagrass is aromatherapy which will effect you with its special odor all day.

New products Works We have focused world bedding market closely, The companies will see that easily, when they start working with us , they will know the new product that use in the another extremity of the world , and they will able to demand it from us. We want that when somebody says bedding components. He should first mind Allbeco.

About export and export markets 90% of our sales are export. Our major export markets are Africa, Middle East Balkans and USA. We can sell our products to all part of the world. It is our global strategy.

Little information about other companies: Allbemac Under the brand name of ALLBEMAC, We are producing classic mattress tape edge machine, automatic tape edge machine, manual and automatic packaging machine and full automatic mattress production line . We design machines that can meet all needs. R & D studies are ongoing and continuous way we design machines that provide benefits to the production and provide operators with maximum efficiency. We’re going to have our machine park to cater exclusively to the mattress industry With Coverconf Brand, you bring foreign capital to Turkey market.

71

What is the production that you will do with this brand? What kind of mattress covers do you produce? What is the advantage and differences of this mattress covers? Coverconf is one of Europe’s best mattress cover manufacturer. Cases that have production are exported to many countries. We decided to have investment on mattress covers under Coverconf brand in Turkey as moving Italian production technology and style. We want to increase our market share with this investment by offering new and innovative mattress covers. We believe that Italian style mattress covers will get good demand from local mattress manufacturers and this new products will be key to open many new export markets.

On last year’s performance and 2015 plans Our company focused on the advertisement in 2014 and became a well-known company in the mattress sector. Particularly when somebody needs innovative and natural products, they mind first ALLBECO. It was our aim for 2014 and we are successful. As an International company, new investments possibilities are very high for us. And we have always negotiating about new investments. We have 2 more investment Project for 2015. But it is early to explain for now.

What are the contributions of the mattress industry to Kayseri? The city is said to be the backbone of the mattress industry. Is this idea correct? Kayseri is one of the most important cities when the Turkish furniture industry is mentioned. The share of the mattress industry in the Kayseri furniture industry is also very high. Being many leading manufacturers of the sector in Kayseri makes it correct to say that the city is the backbone of the sector. Presence of these big companies open the way for smaller size companies and leads the way for new investors

in the sector. Besides, the production of raw materials in Kayseri helps to the competition power of Kayseri companies considerably. The mattress sector is a growing sector globally but we, as ALLBECO, always say the same thing, “Turkish mattress companies should open to the world, should closely follow up the industry in the world, should develop righter and more different products for the consumer. The sector usually dominates on regular products and this makes disadvantageous for the suppliers. The companies should develop their own mattress concepts and should put their distinction forward. This will help them to build up brand value and will make them more advantageous against their competitors.” We have to develop our vision globally and utilize right regional and local strategies. To make a long story short, I could say that knowing what kind of a mattress we can sell to China will be defined as an experience obtained globally and utilized as a correct strategy regionally.

Demirci Label develops new solutions in bed labels 72

“Leading bed manufacturers force us to develop new labels for themselves. We offer the same for smaller brands”

One of the leading companies with its investments, Demirci label company serves its customers with inflammable, leather, knitted and embroidered labels for bed manufacturers. General manager of the company Ferhat Demirci introduced his company by saying, “Label of the bed is so important as business cards.”

On products for bed companies We are a leading company in the label sector since 2010 because we do not compete on price. We deliver the orders at the best time period. We can produce large and

scalable amounts of orders. We have both offset and digital printing facilities. Label is the ID cards of the beds. It is so important. It is seen first when look at a bed with its quilts. Label is for knowledgeable buyers. Buyer inspects design and other specs of the bed afterwards. Customers of major buyers are more sensitive.

On business policy We do not accept orders that we cannot do it well, even if it is so profitable. Sometimes saying no becomes an asset. Its return is prof-

73

itable. We are keen on keeping our promises both in volume and timing of delivery.

On research and development in label manufacturing Like other materials demanded by mattress manufacturers, new products and product development are important. In 2007 we offered our customers inflammable label. We made sticker products for exporting manufacturers that were used for polyester fabrics. We solved adhesive problems by applying new adhesives. There were problems caused by heating and cooling. We almost solved this problem as well. We sell all our products with product guarantees. Each manu-

facturer demands different labels and change them frequently. Now, labels made of leather, knitted and embroidered kinds are most trendy and popular.

On the share of labels in mattress industry It is difficult to guess about the amount of label production in Turkey. But in general, it can be said that the demand for labels are the same for the demand for mattresses. Besides there are other accessories such as handles, manuals and guarantee certificates printing. We are a leader in supplying sheet printed labels to major bed manufacturers. We do not have machinery for roll printing.

On exports We have about 10 to 15 thousand dollars of sales in abroad. We do not sell directly. Recently, we are now producing about 20 thousand dollars worth of labels. Beds carrying our labels are sold all over the world.

On customer relations Our customers are appreciating our efforts to sell our production by visiting buyers whether they need on thousand or larger amount of labels. We do the same what we do to larger firms to smaller customers. And they like our policy to be at the service of our buyers.

Base production base from BKB

Started to produce bases for mattresses, BKB furniture company began to produce beds lately. One of the suppliers of the largest bed manufacturer, who sold 90 % of production to this company, BKB exports the rest. Enver Gozupek, operations manager of BKB furniture, explains his views:

On BKB furniture Co.

Erdal GĂśzĂźpek Business Manager of BKB Mobilya

In our factory of 3,000 sqm. equipped with latest machinery in Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone, we have been producing mainly bases and headboard for beds since 2010. We try to be distinguished with our innovative products and service quality. Behind the quality lays the dedication to participation of all our staff in the manufacturing processes and our attention to detail in production. Starting with procurement quality management system has

been running smoothly up to the end point where our products meet with their end users. With the advantage of producing on assembly line, the company can manage all quality control processes and increase the efficiency. Daily production run can be reached up to 500 pieces and that makes us the leader in the city.

Customer focused production Meeting the expectations of its customers and needs the company offer products and services beyond their expectations in the future. We aimed to increase the performance level one more step up. We also keen about environmental issues in production.

Other products for mattress manufacturers Hard felt, soft felt, cotton felt and wool felt are our major products.

Our buyers use them in the production of high segment products. Cottons are for summer type beds, wool fillings used on the winter side of the mattress. We use 100 percent merinos washed wools. We buy them from domestic producers.

Production doubled in line with exports We export some products including felts to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Angola. We got a new equipment for pressing and vacuuming of felts to reduce the volume and cost of transportation. We increased our production capacity from 250 tons to 500 tons. We produce two kinds of felts. One is made by needles and other is made through air flow. We are one of the few companies having TSE standards in production.

Construction industry fuels bed sales Like construction sector, textile is a generic industry. Both run in parallel while growing. Each home sold means more demand for furniture and beds. Demand for them do not change much in the short run, however, they are replaced in the mid term. There is no trend in mattress. Demand for our production is directly related with sales of furniture and beds. Production process is the same for about 20 years. Waste and by products of textile industry are our input for production. Thus we are somehow in recycling business. We keep our records to document the transaction of polyester and cotton mix raw materials that were then sold as hard felt.

On foundation of Mavera Kimya With their experience of 20 years in business our founders established BKS Kimya in 2005. In 2011 it signed a partnership agreement with Huzur Mining company, assumed the present name and began to produce adhesives for several industries.

H端seyin Basak, General Manager of Mavera Kimya

On services offered to bed manufacturers We produce solvent based and hot-melt adhesives for bed producers. Since it has serious hazards on health the use and production of solvent based adhesives are strictly controlled or even prohibited in some countries. Turkey will follow suit soon. So, we prefer hot-melt adhesives, and increase its share in our sales. PSA kind of hot-melt adhesives are mostly preferred by mattress producers. Pocked spring producers demand special kind of adhesives from our company.

77

Importance of adhesives for beds Adhesives are a major element for assembly of mattresses. Parts of the products should be combined by using quality adhesives. We are trying to develop the best adhesives for our customers. Development staff in our company is highly valuable from this point. We try to improve application process, to reduce waste, and to increase the strength of adhesives.

On exports Arabian peninsula, Middle East, Iran Russia and most of nort African countries are our major markets. We deliver half of our monthly production of 200 tons solvent-based foam glues, and 60 tons of PSA hot-melt glues.

On last year’s performance 2014 was highly fruitful. We added many profitable customers in our buyer list. We signed several contracts for distributorship in foreign markets. We even got new buyers in Istanbul and in Turkey. Sales in Istanbul accounts for a large share in domestic sales. We were highly successful in 2014 both from the supply and competitive point of view.

On new machinery Our production capacities for certain items have began to inadequate so we decided to expand capacities. Assembly of new machinery has almost been finished. With additional marketing efforts, we want to improve our position in the market.

Kar Machine: New machinery for mattress industry

Having more than 10 models of mattress machinery, Kar Machine Company adds new machinery to its offerings. General Manager of the company Abdullah Emin Demirsoy informed about his company and customer policy.

On history of the company

Abdullah Emin Demirsoy, General Manager of Kar Makina

We started with bad packing machinery in Kayseri. The first machinery was sold not in Kayseri but to a buyer in Bursa. It is still operational. Our story started us such. Later we produced smaller machinery such as side closing, manual packing. In general our machinery

are sold to markets abroad. Four of the machines are sold in Turkey while eight machines are delivered to export markets.

On machinery produced Presently we manufacture, automatic mattress tape edge machine, manual mattress tape edge machine, roll fabric cutting machine, automatic mattress packing machine, quilted panel cutting machine, spacer border machine, mattress production line, quilting machine, tufting machine, full automatic handle sewing machine, mattress hot melt gluing machinery.

79

In a month, we will introduce a luper quilting machinery. We have buyers in Holland and Germany. 70 % of our production is exported to about 12 countries. There are no major differences between demands of domestic and foreign buyers. They both try to improve their production abilities and efficiencies in manufacturing. They consider about the production capacities and flexibility of the production process. Naturally, the beds manufactured by producers in each country may have different specifications in term of colors and materials.

On automation, R&D and after sale services activities Some of the software of the machinery is developed by our team composed by electric and electronic engineers. All of us meet frequently to think about the new solutions for the machinery we produced. We continuously seek better ways of doing things. Our machines are improved continuously.

After sale services are important for machinery producers. We have provided full support to our customers for flawless operation of our machinery. We sent experts, change parts, and redesign software when needed to the premises of our customer. We are fully back of our machinery. Technical faults are rare in our business.

On growing conscious of buyers both for mattress and machinery industries We emphasize on improvements in bed machinery. Every producer of machinery has R&D activities to develop better products. Customers of end products, namely beds, demands better and higher quality sleep. Better machinery makes better mattresses. Sometimes our customers come us with their questions, seeking new functions of the machinery. We like this kind of customers who know what they demand and ask for. It improves our both vision and business.

Bunteks aims 1 million meter Now producing 400 thousand meter fabrics monthly, Bunteks aims 1 million by the end of 2016

Cemal Aslandag, General Manager of B端nteks

Having a factory in the same location where Bunyan Blanket company was established in 1929, Bunteks has been producing for export markets. General Manager Cemal Aslandag informed about his company and activities.

On production facility and capacity We are producing fabrics in the old facilities of Sumerbank established in 1929. 14 businesses of Sumerbank have been privatized during 1995-1998 period. We bought one of them, the only facility that is still operational, to produce blankets. In

2005 we started to produce fabrics for bed industry. In 2010 we innovated our production machinery and focused on bed fabrics production. The factory has a 30 thousand meter-covered area on 60 thousand meter land. We produce about 400 thousand meter fabrics monthly. Variety in bed fabrics is proliferated recently. We produce economic type of bed fabrics, including anti-bacterial, leak-proof, stain repellant types. I think that some of fabric manufacturers over emphasize properties of their products by mentioning aromatic products. The

odor is vanishing in certain period. Human body has unbelievable chemical properties. They exaggerate some of the features.

On exports and export markets 95 % of our manufacturing is sold in export markets. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Balkan countries, and England are our export markets.

About the industry Earlier we were not aware of the volume of consumer market in the world. There is a huge demand for beds. There are great potential for further development as long as you can keep the quality and price in balance. There are 12 fold larger companies in the world. Right products and right prices can find their buyers easily.

On product development and plans for the future We as Bunteks are continuously studying the fabrics for further developments in terms of their colors, structures, finishing, touching etc. Our production target for 2015 is 700 thousand meter. Next year it will be 1 million meter. To this aim, we invested about 650 thousand dollars in our machinery park. We mostly produce fabrics made of polyester and polypropylene, both are flammable materials. We apply special treatments to fabrics to make them flame-resistant products by imbedding them into special chemicals. The fabrics are then subjected to heat treatment by 250 degrees centigrade for 2 to 3 seconds. The last stage is packaging of the fabrics.
