From The Editor

East or the west, home is the best… Every month we travel a lot. From China to the USA we visit all fairs of the sleep products industry to cover the events and to distribute free copies of our magazine. This year only we were in different European countries, Orlando of the US, China and Middle East. We were in Russia and Balkans. Now we are in Istanbul. It is our city. And we will be at our own show. Sleepwell Expo Istanbul 2016 opens for the third time!

The show will host some 100 companies operating in the machinery industry, raw materials, components and finished mattress segments of the sleep products industry. We have exhibitors from different countries and we have buyer delegations supported by the Turkish government. Showtime in Istanbul

This issue of Sleep Well and Sleep Tech magazines will be the king in the media industry at the show because they are part of the organization. We have printed 3,000 extra copies to distribute at the fair. You will see the success shots and notes of the fair in our next issue. We will be in Turkey again with the next issue because we will be at MODEF Expo in Inegol, Bursa and we will be at Modev International Furniture Fair in Ankara. As soon as the new year starts we will fly to Germany and France for a speedy and quality start for 2017. Turkey is peaceful, Istanbul is lovely, economy is on the rise…

Despite many attempts, from in and out of Turkey, it is a fact that the country is on the way to developing further at all respects. There are many smear campaigns to show Turkey as a place of dangers for both, economy and life, the reality is that everything is very well and the democratic system has all controls as in Europe and in the rest of the democratic world. There is only one thing missing in Turkey; we are not promoting our possessions well. I hope our foreign friends are may read the country correctly. I wish a very good Sleepwell Expo for exhibitors, visitors and for the whole industry!

Detox to Zero by ® Oeko-Tex

New tool supports producers in achieving Detox targets Zurich – How can textile production facilities successfully communicate whether, and to what extent, they meet the targets outlined by the Detox campaign which excludes process chemicals that are harmful to the environment? Launching immediately, the OEKO-TEX® Association will offer a new tool as a practical answer to these pressing questions from brand and retail companies who want to meet Greenpeace requirements. ‘Detox to Zero’ by OEKO-TEX® enables manufacturers along the textile chain to assess the status of their chemical management systems and the quality of their waste water and sludge, all documented using credible, independent verification. Detox to Zero by OEKO-TEX® allows companies to better identify harmful substances in textile production, to handle them in a responsible way and eliminate them incrementally by 2020, contributing to the fulfilment of Detox demands. Detox to Zero by OEKO-TEX® comprises three basic modules: an MRSL
screening of all chemicals

With the new DETOX TO ZERO by OEKO-TEX® tool, production facilities along the textile chain who have committed to the Detox campaign can specifically monitor their chemical management processes and work to ensure compliance with the Greenpeace targets. >> www.oeko-tex.com/ detoxtozero

used, an analysis and assessment of the established
chemical management system as well as a review of all waste water and sludge with regard to the eleven groups of harmful chemicals condemned by Greenpeace. The results are summarized in an annual status report that lists the extent to which the company is already compliant with the Detox targets and includes specific improvement suggestions for further implementation. With this status report, companies are also able to transparently communicate the stages achieved on the path toward complete elimination of Detox substances. Stakeholder groups, such as NGOs or consumers, can use the website www. oeko-tex.com/detoxtozero to check company information at any time using the report number. The OEKO-TEX® brand portfolio, however, extends well beyond

the reaches of the Detox requirements. Managing systems and processes throughout the textile supply chain, OEKO-TEX® services include a certification for non-hazardous and environmentally friendly textile chemicals, a product label for textiles that have been tested for harmful chemicals and produced in a sustainable manner, and a database for central supply chain management. As the OEKO-TEX® Association plans to celebrate 25 years of sustainable change in 2017, look for the introduction of new services for the textile industry as well as a new, refreshed look for the brand. Since 1992, more than 10,000 OEKO-TEX® partner companies from industry and retail have relied upon the OEKO-TEX “Confidence in Textiles” promise and, with the OEKO-TEX portfolio of certifications and labels, contributed to enhanced consumer protection.

Onur Kırayoglu, Member of Board of Kırayteks

Producing mattress-ticking fabrics for about 25 years, Kırayteks continues to invest in production. Enhancing its speed on mattress ticking fabrics production through its new weaving and knitting machine, company can produce based on customer’s demand by sharing their ideas. Stressing on the importance of being perma-

nent in exports, Onur Kırayoglu, member of board of Kırayteks records that design is important in competition.

As Kırayteks, can you tell about your newly finished product and its features you launched recently? “There are many trends in the world. These are about health,

19

naturalness and hygiene. We cooperate with many leading international chemical player. We work on the latest developments together with them. Due to we have dying experience, we can enhance quality of product and fabric. In addition, we provide business partnership services on this field. Our customers share different ideas with us and then we realize the ideas. We perform on scented fabric. Mattress manufacturers look for naturalness and softness properties. Technology developed so much even in polyester, we have become to be unable to differentiate between polyester and cotton through special applications and innovations. Polyester is not a healthy product. However, it can give the softness of cotton.”

DESIGN PLAYS A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN COMPETITION So, are these features being looked for to customize product or increase salability? “We’re not the company that performs for that. We are purchasing from supplier which has made

laboratory work and productize, then we process. We enhances value of products with updates and improvements. Somehow anti-bacterial certificates is asked for by some situation as in public bidding. When we deliver fabric to laboratory and then results are coming. Thus, we receive certificate on “no

bacterial growth in the fabric and this procurement of anti-bacterial works”. For example, Aleo Vera. This feature provides balance pH of the skin, moisture and vitality when it contacts the skin. People attach importance to such things and they take a risk to pay such product. As first, softness of the mattress is important for consumer. That opens you first door in offering. And they examine mattress in showroom and lastly they look pattern of the mattress. Design plays a very important role in competition. A certain frame plays role in the design as well.”

What about new investments? “Our investments in dying continue. We have dyeing and finishing machines. We provided new machines for weaving and finishing. We will have machine

which are just for fabrics of mattress ticking. In this way, we can manufacture desired product more quickly.”

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BE PERMANENT IN EXPORT Do you have market to export? “Our operations on market we have exported mattress ticking for 10 years still continue. It is very important to be permanent in export. We export mattress ticking to about 20 countries. Customers notice that our fabric belongs to us when they see them that’s why we proved it. When Turkish market considered, we have a lot to do for domestic market.”

Mr. Mustafa Nebi Doğan, Member of the Board of Mert Makina: “The current space of ‘Sleepwell EXPO’ will be insufficient for the next time.”

Can you imagine that in the beginning a man slept on the cold hard ground? Well, it’s not a surprise that he fashioned a mound of leaves, straw, and twigs to make a more comfortable sleeping surface. This continued with placing an animal skin over the mound as a sheet and another as a cover. Later on he formed the first mattress by sewing skins or fabrics together and filling it with cushioning materials. Without having any clue he brought a paramount change to the world. It took ages for the steel coil spring

to come with the industrial revolution. As a matter of fact it didn’t even pass through one’s mind for more than 20 years to use it for mattresses. Even when manufacturers started to use the innersprings in mattresses, it didn’t quite gain a measure of popularity for more than 60 years which had their ups and downs in sales throughout this period. It would be more than 60 years before innerspring mattresses gained a measure of popularity. Innerspring mattresses and box springs

33

were sold throughout this period and had their ups and downs in sales. Mustafa Nebi Doğan, Member of the Board

When it comes to the development process of mattresses in Turkey, Mr. Mustafa Nebi Dogan, Member of the Board of Mert Makina says that it’s clearly seen that Turkey differs slightly with the world with its cultural infrastructure. It started with wool mattresses and advanced with foam and innerspring mattresses. “Granting all this it’s observed that people still sleep on foam mattresses or on 15 year old mattresses. Hence we can say that the mattress industry is expanding at a high rate. At some countries this process is developed in 3 to 7 years due to their sociocultural conditions. A demonstration of this process can be seen when we look at Morocco in the early 21st century,” says Mustafa Nebi Dogan.

“This consideration is also valid for Egypt when we consider the last 3 years. More than 50 mattress manufacturing facilities are installed after the change of Egypt’s politics. India is expected to acquire the same progress however this time it’s anticipated to take along for an extended period of time. “To conclude Turkey’s location offers advantages due to its accessibility to more than 60 countries within flights of 3 hours. This advantage composes Turkey as a hub for ‘Sleep and Bed’ components. It may be that Sleepwell EXPO fair is organizing its 3s edition but we are in a great expectation of attracting intensive attention. I would like to finish with delivering an opinion: The current space ‘Sleepwell EXPO’ is using will be insufficient for the next time.”

Emax Label solutions for mattress industry Emax offers adhesive labels for top performance on mattresses

A joint venture of multiStiQ (The Netherlands) and Chiasa (Spain) Emax Label Solutions produces label materials for many industries including mattresses, carpets, garments, tires, construction, footwear, furniture and advertising industries. The company has been serving its customers through factories in Holland and Spain and via sales offices in Turkey, Germany, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico and HK-Shanghai.

It has business partners in several industries, but it mainly deals with label printers. Major groups of customers are composed of label printers who look for difference and quality. Recently focused on Turkish market, the company have been decided to concentrate on materials suitable for digital printing and developed plans to be more active on this area in since 2015.

35

Mattress manufacturers, who are one of the buyers of adhesive labels, need variety of labels to be used on different parts of mattresses for various purposes. They can be made of satin, nylon taffeta, leather or cotton etc. They are put on surfaces and sealed or stitched to the mattress. Mainly hot melt and acrylic adhesives are used for gluing the labels. The labels have information about the design, company logo, barcode or other information printed on PES satin, nylon taffeta, PP or paper face stock. In Turkey, polyester satin and nylon taffeta face stock are commonly preferred by mattress manufacturers.

What are the criteria for best performance mattress labels? As labels are important supplementary for mattresses, manufacturers expect durability and print-

ing quality. Printing quality, back coating and adhesion strength are the most important criteria that securing best performance. Printing Quality depends mostly on the face stock and printer compatibility. Printers can be conventional or digital. Emax has high knowledge of the latest

printing technologies and how to implement these on textile surfaces. The company produces almost for all printers which are offset, flexo, thermal transfer , HP INDIGO , screen-print, letter press , inkjet (water based inks, UV inks, oil based inks, HP latex, Epson Sepiax etc. ) Xerography, phaser, or dot-matrix .

36

Back Coating and Adhesion Strength No manufacturer can tolerate the fall of any label from mattress. This is very risky for marketing, stocking, and from design and legal points of view. There are many steps to ensure strong adherence to mattress and prevent failure. First step, is to take into account of the specific properties of textile, ensure thermal stabilization of fabrics, make calendaring for improved surface or softer handle. Next step is back coating of face stock . Unless back coating, adhesive can bring up to face stock and cannot be coated well on backside of face stock, which leads to weak adhesion strength. Back coating is also must for stitched labels to prevent non-fraying on the edges. Back coating process certainly is an additional cost and abstained by some producers for whom not having standard quality but having lower price is a priority. This is very sensitive an inevitable process for Emax. Lastly, choosing the right adhesive type is important. The coating of most convenient adhesive is too critical for labels. Producers has to decide adhesive type according to the mattress fabric will be adhered to and requests of mattress manufacturers. Adhesive type can be hot-melt or acrylic mainly. Mattress fabric structure is the main criteria to be decided adhesive formula. In case of unconformity with fabric and adhesive formula, it is natural that labels will fall down. Because of these mattress manufacturers has to inform label producers about any change in mattress fabric prior to their orders and ask for suitable adhesive.

38

Some mattress labels are required to be long lasting but some labels are requested to be come off just after mattress sold to the end user. Then , different kind of adhesives are used to meet expectations. In summary, producing the best performance mattress label is a result of best knowledge in textile structure, coating techniques, adhesive and understanding the customer expectations .

tailor made solutions, from too low grams to very high grams of heat seal (10-200gr/m² and self adhesive ( 5gr/m²- 60gr/m²). The standard materials can be adjusted to the needs of customers.

The expertise in printing techniques, textile and adhesives especially the combination of these aspects makes Emax as an interesting partner for many mattress manufacturers.

In factories of the company in Holland and Spain special processes are carried out as of self adhesive, heat seal and water based dispersion coatings, for multitude of specific properties to textile, ensuring thermal stabilization of fabrics, making calendaring for improved surface or softer handle. They have different slitting and cutting facilities in both factories such as cutting and slitting (tapes, sheets ) and die cutting (labels of

Emax has a high knowledge on the latest printing technologies and know how to implement these on textile surfaces. The production facilities allow small runs (3.000m²) for special products or

roll). There are also units for scatter coating of heat sealable powders, powder for coating (powder dot) and paste dot coating. The company has been certified by ISO 9001 for quality management. Product specific tests are performed such as shrinkage testing, printing trials, accelerated aging tests, measuring melting characteristics, whiteness measurement, light stability, adhesive peel testing, monitoring weight statistically, chemical uptake controlling and surface smoothness testing during all production process. Materials are also inspected during slitting and rewinding.

CIFF Shanghai hosted the world furniture industry 40

Led by Istanbul Exporters’ Association (IIB), Turkey was well represented by 20 exhibitors.

Second in Shanghai and 38th in total, China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) came to a successful end on September 10, 2016. With over 2,000 exhibitors and 48 seminars and activities, the four-day event presented an amazing feast to the global furniture industry. For the second time CIFF took place in NECC (New Exhibition and Convention Center) in Hongqiao. It attracted 84,696 professional visitors, with an increase of 9,574 over last year. This num-

ber is perhaps less breathtaking than the hundreds of thousands of visits or billions’ RMB deals that happened to some exhibitions. However, the progress indeed reflects a growing business value of CIFF as a trade oriented furniture show. As is CIFF’s principle: always concentrate on the needs of exhibitors and visitors, it stands by the industry and develops together with the industry so that all parties can share a win-win outcome.

42

In this gigantic world event, Turkey was represented by 20 exhibitors operating in the contract furniture, office furniture and home furniture. They had a broad range of products of classic, modern, modular, coupon and avant-garde styles. Visiting the show, H.E. Özcan Şahin, Turkish consul general in Shanghai, and S. Aykut Aymelek, Turkish commercial counselor, visited the Turkish companies and Mr. Ahmet Güleç, Chairman of the Board of Paper and Forestry Products Exporters’ Association, the organizer of Turkish participation. As a premium furniture trade show, CIFF (Shanghai) always promotes common prosperity among exhibitors and visitors. It facilitates information exchange and business matching, making

trade smooth and effective. This year it offered a “Buyer Data Package” to exhibitors before the show. With the package, they could better understand the market and thus introduce suitable products to the show. CIFF (Shanghai) also designed customized visiting routes for buyers according to their purchase demand. This helped them

identify the right partners more efficiently. During the show, a business-matching event was successfully launched, drawing a large crowd of participants. With rounds of intense networking, many of them reached satisfactory deals. CIFF(Shanghai) invited a number of professional buyer groups, such as European and American dealers and gov-

44

ernment procurement delegations. This helped brought actual benefits to exhibitors. CIFF (Shanghai) is not just an incubator for trade cooperation. It is also a grand stage for industry communication. The 38th session organized 48 brilliant activities, including design displays, expert seminars, guest dialogues and fashion shows. All of the events focused on industry needs and trends. The EAST Design Show shared fascinating colors and the best oriental furniture design. The China Tour of Pinnacle Awards by American Society of Furniture Designers debuted in CIFF (Shanghai), sharing design pieces that are mass-produced and highly popular in the US. Famous scholars, economists and entrepreneurs gathered to discuss heated themes, sharing insights on “Supply-side Reform & Distribution Innovation for China’s Furniture Market”, “Intelligent Industry Upgrading

and Transformation” and “Made in China 2025”. The Office Life Theme Pavilion shared an integrated office environment of human factors, ergonomics, green requirements, smart trends, space mix & match and fashion. The “Furniture ·Harbor Story” launched “Alpod --- a mobile home” to share a futuristic open living space. Driven by market demand and featured by crossover integration, the on-site events helped inspire the industry and foster common development. The next edition of CIFF will be held in Guangzhou, 18-21 March 2017 as the first phase and 28-31 March 2017 as the second phase.

Established in Kayseri in 2007, BOR-SA is providing a wide range of materials for the soft furniture mattress, sofa and sofa bed manufacturers, including fiber to pocket and bone springs, mattress ticking fabric to elastic webbing and mattress tape to air capsules. BOR-SA also shines out with her exclusive spray glue Bor-sa S-500. Aiming to provide all raw materials and semi-products at one point, BOR-SA builds a bridge between big producers and middle and small size furniture producers. Mehmet Koksal, Chairmain, BORSA informs about his company:

have widened the range of goods that we provide. Now we supply for the needs of especially the so-called “soft furniture” mattress, sofa and sofabed manufactures. Our product range includes fiber, felt, pocket and bone springs, mechanism, gas spring, mattress ticking fabric, upholstery fabric, elastic webbing, mattress tape,

air capsules etc. In shortly except cheap board, we provide all components and material to produce furniture. We have to say that our main supply sector is the mattress industry. We have special spray glue for mattress production called Bor-sa S-500. Our mission is to provide all raw material and semi-products to be produced at one point.

Would you kindly brief your manufacturing facilities? What is your production capacity? Our company mainly deals with distributing goods of main producer as a trade company. But in our facilities we produce ball fiber

also. Our capacity of ball fiber production is 40 tons/month.

What sorts of products do you manufacture? What are the specifications of these products? As we mentioned above, we are Trade Company. It means that we build a bridge between big producer and middle and small size furniture producers. As you know, there is a direct connection and trade between suppliers and big producers. But small and middle producer don’t have such a big consumption capacity. So we provide them competition chance and to get the goods as much as possible close prices with our contract capacity. Again, it is

necessary to mention here that we supply all materials according to the needs of small and medium size companies at one point.

How would you define “healthy mattress?” What sorts of materials should be used in a healthy mattress? According to our experience in the mattress industry, a healthy mattress is the mattress which meets the needs of people to sleep in comfort, rest peacefully and wake up fresh. We know that there is an increase of customer consciousness about what they need and how they can meet their need. In the internet age, they can easily reach all necessary information

54

through net. They can decide what kind of mattress meet and satisfy themselves. The materials used inside a healthy mattress are very important. But the most important thing is how the customer could find the right mattress. That is why customers have to determine their needs first of all and look for the mattress which meets their needs. At this point, mattress seller and producer have wide range products presenting to customers’ taste and service.

price and service policy. In 2016, we are expecting not too much but little jump in furniture sector. These all depends on the parameters outside of furniture sector. Our plan for 2016 is to increase our service and quality much more. On the other hand, we export our goods to 5 countries since 2014. Our main aim is to increase our export both at the customer and country wise. We have organized and built up a foreign trade team inside the company in order to achieve that.

Can you evaluate 2015 for your brand and the sector in whole? What are your future prospects and projections for 2016? Generally speaking, 2015 was not the year of furniture because of many parameters both domestic and international. As you know, furniture is one of the few goods easily give up under the crisis time.

Would you brief your export markets? Our main market is the neighboring countries. We export to Georgia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and Tunisia. Differs country by country, we mainly sell felt, adhesive, packaging nylon, mattress ticking fabric, mattress tape, air capsule etc.

On the other hand, despite this depression at the furniture sector, our trade was successful and satisfied us thanks to our customers who believe in us and know our

How do you provide your raw material and product supply? Do you have imports? As mentioned above, we only pro-

duce ball fiber and we import the raw material from Vietnam. All the rest is supplied from the domestic market. But with the hard competition inside the domestic and foreign markets, we are looking for alternative solutions to get the goods and supply our customers both price and quality wise.

What are your final remarks? 2015 has passed with all happy and painful matters. With the New Year we hope to all around the world peace and happiness. Also we thank you for giving us this opportunity.

Rolteks ensures quality mattress and furniture manufacturing The quality of a product depends on quality of raw materials and production techniques. Fiber is the most important element in mattress and furniture fabrics. Rolteks stands for the best raw materials at this regard and serves the industry with a professional approach. We conducted a fruitful interview with Mr. Furkan Çetinbulut, third generation family member of Mitsan Group.

Can you brief us about your company? Rolteks is a new investment of Mitsan Group on Polyester Fiber Wadding Products. The company is situated on a 7,000 sqm closed area. With an annual capacity of 1.5 Million sqm production, we are one of the leading suppliers of furniture, mattress and home-textile industries. Our products are preferred by their regulated quality. As you know, quality at all times is the most important issue on regulated production for furniture and home-textile industries. Small differences in variated order lots may cause big damages for producers. Our technology ensures same quality in all lots.

How much microfiber is used in mattress production? What kinds of mattresses need microfiber in production? It depends on how density used in the mattress. This amount varies regarding countries. Because each country has its own sleep culture. As an example, Anglo-Saxon nations prefer soft mattresses while Iran people prefer hard mattresses. Almost 2 kg microfiber per mattress is used in domestic market. There are several filling materials used in mattress quilting such as wool, cotton. But microfiber is generally preferred by mattress producers in their products because of durability, hygene and low-cost issues.

How is microfiber production in Turkey with regards to quality and quantity? Microfiber is one of the main components of home-textile products. As we consider the strength and

Furkan Çetinbulut, Member of Board

bigness of this industry, Turkey is one of the leading microfiber producers in the World. We have really big and competitive companies. As Rolteks, our vision is to be one of the key suppliers in EMEA Region.

How is the microfiber industry in the world? Which countries are the main suppliers and which ones are importers? Microfiber wadding has wide range of usage so much so that it is produced in most countries. But China is the leader in the World. Turkey is the key producer in EMEA Region.

Mitsan CNC Design invests in foam production 60

Burhan Cetinbulut, “People will move to foam mattresses from spring types in ten years.”

On the foams they produced On our product line there are several density of foam including visco elastic and PU types. Density of foams defines the quality of the product. There are other kinds of foams depending on their hardness, softness and comfort levels. In addition to these products we

Burhan Çetinbulut

Having been active in the sector since 1976 Mitsan Group started to produce foams in 1998, felt in 22007, and fiber production in 2016 for the needs of furniture, mattress and automotive industries as their major supplier. Presently, the company has four factories of foam, mattress, fiber and felt products. Burhan Çetinbulut of Mitsan informed about the foams they produce and forecast that in ten years people will change their preference for the foam type of mattresses.

started to produce contour design foam products by investing 2 million Euros. In these factories that are one of the rare investments in Turkey and in EMEA region, thank to the special designed components mattress producers can manufacture mattresses without using any springs.

61

Producers was considering visco as a short term fashion We began to produce visco elastic products in 2007. Interest in visco types in Turkey have recently began to accelerate. Perception was that it would fade away soon. But, now visco has increased its share in the market and still is going up. I forecast that share of foam type of mattresses will be higher in the coming years. This is an important point. The labor cost in the production of foam types is less then spring types. We and other companies who have a power in the market may lead the consumers towards foam mattresses. By now foams were expensive, now prices are lowered and buying power of consumers are rising. I think that in ten years, foam and latex will be more shares in the mattress markets. On the differences of foam mattress usage and manufacturing between those in Turkey and in the world Raw materials are important in this business. Since most of them were imported from Europe there are not so many differences among them. Suppliers of raw materials determine the market. It is also a matter of marketing; everyone tries to differentiate their products. We produce MDI base visco elastic foams that are made of two to three different materials. We prefer MDI, which is softer and more comfortable than others. We observed that our customers like the touch of our materials. In short, there are not so many differences between the two. Europeans are closer to the source of raw materials.

62

Are visco mattresses more innovative than others? There are other materials called visco gel, which are more expensive and used in upper level of mattresses and target to A segment of the market. A class of products brings more profit to both suppliers and producers. The added value has more leverage. We add to our prices 200 lira, end user pays additionally 2 thousand liras. Export to more than 30 countries We ship our felts and foams to more than 30 countries mostly to North African markets. We have new markets. Problems in the neighboring countries have forced us to seek new markets in the world. Every producer knows all of the suppliers in the country and markets have become more transparent. For this reason, we try to sell our goods in far away countries. Distance from market is a problem in exports We want to enter Russian market, a great potential. We have had talks with customers in India and we want to export to the countries in South America, though there are some problems. Mutual trust and cultural divide are major problems in this region. You understand the importance of neighboring markets when you spent some time in different export markets. Geographical distance and cultural divide are major problems in exports.

ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® Certification for Sustainable Textile Chemicals Zürich – The International OEKO-TEX® Association has established a new certification system for its portfolio of sustainable textile certifications. ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® is a verification procedure by which manufacturers of textile processing chemicals and chemical compounds, such as dyes, performance additives, finishing agents, lubricants, detergents, etc., are able to confirm that their products can be used in sustainable textile production. The new program is currently in pilot mode and officially launches in early summer 2016. The ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® certification program is comprised of three assessments which are conducted in a stepwise manner. The results from each stage of evaluation are shared with applicants who can use the data to confirm internal quality control and occupational safety guidelines as well as to reformulate if necessary to set up safer, more sustainable formulations. • First, manufacturers confidentially and securely disclose the chemical substances in their formulas which are compared via CAS number against the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Restricted Substance List and the STEP by OEKO-TEX® Manufacturing Restricted Substance List. These OEKO-TEX® lists are compliant with REACH and ZDHC guidelines. • Second, a risk/hazard assessment is conducted in which each ingre-

dient is evaluated against twenty-two health and environmental endpoints. • Finally, an analytical verification is performed to confirm that the chemical product does not contain unintended by-products or contaminants and meets the criteria for ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® certification. Products that pass all three phases are granted the ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® certification which indicates that the certified textile chemical is safe to use in OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified textile products and in STeP by OEKO-TEX® certified manufacturing facilities. In this way, ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® chemicals increase textile product and process

safety and help protect consumers, textile industry workers, and the environment from the negative impact of potentially harmful substances. Furthermore, the addition of ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® to the OEKO-TEX® portfolio promotes comprehensive stewardship of textile products and processes throughout the supply chain. The International OEKO-TEX® Association and its sixteen member institutes around the world will be hosting webinars and other learning opportunities soon to ensure clients are aware of the new ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® certification and the many sustainability benefits it offers for textile chemical producers and their customers as well as for the entire textile supply chain.

ProtectForm by Form Sunger – an innovative and healthy product 68

Producing foams, pillows and fibers for the mattress industry, Form Sünger (Foam) Company maintains a leadership position in the industry as a dependable and reliable provider with consumer oriented growth strategies and continuous development geared to meet changing market conditions.

Arif Emre OLMEZTOPRAK Sales & Marketing Manager

The company has a new innovative product called “ProtectForm”. ProtectForm is an ultimate barrier against many types of microbial threats inside a mattress. Today hygiene has been getting more importance. We, humans, have been sparing one third of our

life in bed. That is why mattress materials are very important terms of comfort and health. That’s why ProtectForm makes a lot of sense because it has advantages as: • A highly active microbicide is covalently bonded to a substrate, include synthetic, cellulosic or wool fibers, webs or fabrics, pu. • No migration to the skin or the environment, • Does not allow for the development of adaptive organisms, • No zone of inhibition •The microbicide is bonded. •Does not migrate from the

substrate. •Continuous action isn’t depleted. •Launderable without loss of efficacy. • Safe for humans and the environment • To adhere on surface, and carry a positive charge which creates an “electromagnetic” attraction between the negative charged microorganisms; Schematic structural depiction of covalently immobilized (alkyl alkoxysilane Quarternary ammonium salt) used as microbicidal coatings.

FEATURES OF PROTECTFORM • Highly effective against pathogenic bacteria, • Virucidal and fungicidal, • Is effective with gram(+)/gram(-) bacteria, fungi, molds and mildew, • Offers greater protection against infections, • rapid absorbency, high absorbent capacity, • Hemostatic effect, • Launderable, • Has a permanent antimicrobial effect, • Helps reduce transfer of bacteria • Inhibits the growth of bacteria on and in textiles,

New machinery produced in Turkey by Lineer Lineer Machinery offers more developed and affordable priced machinery than imported ones for the Turkish mattress industry. Having been serving in mattress industry since the year 2011, Lineer Machinery company produces better versions of competitive machinery imported from abroad and offers them to mattress manufacturers at more reasonable prices. Saffet Gungor, a partner of the company, emphasized that they have several projects approved by Tubitak, and informed about his company and operations.

On the company, Lineer Machinery Co. We were established in 2011, though we have been operating in this sector. We produce several machinery to reduce the number of labor needed in the manufacturing processes and aiming to increase the production capacities. We both make the automation systems for these

73

machinery. I can say that we are a good solution partner for our customers. One of the shelving automation projects is that we completed to one of our customers is a good example for this. Earlier 40 people and 4 forklifts were working in this section. Thanks to our system, only two workers can manage the whole operations. With barcode system we embedded in, products that will be delivered to a certain buyer can be transported and delivered to the buyer with robotic movements. There are a few firms in Turkey having these systems. We have other machinery for foam packing, foam vacuuming, both are approved by Tubitak for their authenticity.

On the variety of machinery aiming to mattress manufacturers We may produce all machinery needed by any mattress manufacturer except the spring forming machinery. Number of the varieties is about 25. We are preparing a project to be submitted to Tubitak, Turkey Scientific and Technologic Research Authority, that no other company has. Lately, we developed a machine for cell type mattress manufacturing that aims to reduce more the number of workforce needed for the operations.

On the most demanded type of machinery by manufacturers Especially rollpack machinery is demanded more, because they reduce the cost of transportation. Thanks to these machinery volumes of items that can be filled in a container, can be cut by four fold, a big advantage especially for exporting companies. In a market of this kind, that there is a fierce competition on both

Saffet Güngör and Ersin Güngör

74

price and transportation this is an important advantage. Also, our mattress packing machines are demanded the next most.

On the special projects Our other products approved by Tubitak are foam packing are also have similar advantages. This machinery originally are produced in Europe. We developed this and began to sell them at about 160 thousand Euros, while the originals are sold at 200 thousand Euros. The machine reduces the volume of foam by 6 fold, a serious opportunity for more profit. We sold several of them to our selected customers. We also got support from Tubitak for the development of rollpack machinery, besides other three. We are waiting for the approval. Only one other company has this machinery on its line.

On the production facility and production volumes Our facilities covers 7 thousand sqm and we have sufficient capacity for production. We produce on demand and order so, when demand are high we add night shifts for production. We want to deliver products fast to our buyers. We have special teams for after sale services, who are ready to serve even a small part of the machine is not working well. It increases customer satisfaction and will be a good source for more references.

Milkay produces its own raw materials

Established in 1995 MÄ°LKAY manufactures spring mattresses and sofas, nonwoven and paddings that are used in mattress, isolation, automotive and furniture sectors. At Milkay, raw materials needed for felt and paddings production have been manufactured in its own facilities for more than 2 decades. Oguz Ozev, sales and marketing manager of Milkay informed about his company and activities.

On the general outlook of 2016 for Milkay company It was better than the year before for us. There were loss of sales especially in domestic market and

exports were not so strong, however we worked hard and with the advantage of selling in diverse countries we maintained our sales level. We look forward for the results of the last season of three months. We think that this period will be better.

On the targeted markets in export countries We are selling to variety of markets in abroad, especially in North Africa, where competition is high. Besides, we emphasize on mid and South African markets. Earlier there were a few number of mattress manufacturers in these markets, but now the people have

147

become more prosperous and began to demand higher quality mattresses and better technologies. We are also active in Latin American countries. These are hard to reach markets for mattress industry due to logistical reasons. Our competitors are mostly active in the Balkans, Middle East, Caucasia, and North Africa. But we can reach to further markets thanks to our production capacity and limited profit margins.

On the raw materials of felt and paddings, the wastes of textile industry In case of the need we import some of our inputs. Some materials could not be find in Turkey, such as some special fibers. We have to import them. Sometimes we decide to import due to cost considerations. There is no regular source of supply for these wastes in Turkey. We have a large facility in Nigde, Bor, to process imported textile wastes, where they are cut, combined, processed into fibers. It makes us more powerful in our effort to meet larger demands. The facility was established in 2014 and is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world, we think. We also may sell processed fibers to our competitors, as well.

General comments We will be in the Sleepwell Expo fair event, which will be held for the third time, in Istanbul. The earlier edition of the fair was very successful for us. We expect larger group of visitors in the fair. It was highly productive and profitable. Even it was better than the fair held in Germany. We are optimistic about the future of the industry, despite all kinds of problems enliven in the region.

Oguz Ozev, Sales and Marketing Manager

Ersan Madeni opens to American market

149

Producing metal, moving and electronic mattress systems for more than 30 years Ersan Madeni added several products into its production line such as beds with hygienic fibers, gelled visco foam pads and smart sleep systems. Brand owner Aynur Erman informed about her company and fair activities.

How were the reactions you got in trade shows? We do not have great targets for the year 2016 because of the problems we have been experiencing in business. We decided to focus on investing in fairs for further development. We recognized that this was a right move at the right time. There was only one Turkish company in the fair we participated. We are going to be in IMM

150

next. It is also important for the prestigious of our country as well as of our company. Turkish companies who want to participate in these fairs can only find marginal locations in these events, especially those held in Germany, due to the negative stances of organizers toward foreigners. But, we got a reservation in this fair. We will go to Highpoint fair in October. Now, American market is attractive for us, it excites us, because it is out of our experience to make suitable products for their culture.

What kinds of mechanisms are demanded? There are lots of mechanisms in American market; however, sophisticated mechanism used in European markets is not sold in America. Mattresses are so heavy and are rather simple. We were in a fair in Florida in May, and I witnessed that mechanisms are so simple than those we accustomed in Turkey. We bring our varieties to these markets.

What’s on in your product portfolio? We really have a large variety; I confess that, I don’t know the exact number of them. We are still developing new choices. Our research and development team

151

work hard, and find new solutions for the needs of our buyers. We develop specific varieties for specific companies. We got a good way on the moving mattress mechanisms. We put fibers beneath of them and aimed to especially elderly people. It is also comfortable and suitable for normal people but is not demanded in Turkey. We sleep on flat beds. We have special products that can be adjusted for sitting purposes to offer American market. They can be remote controlled for better comfort, the kinds that are commonly used in Europe especially by elderly.

On their target for American market Target will be set following the fair event. We are not so familiar with this market. We visited only once. We have communications with several businesses. We will keep our contacts with them in the trade show.

Although Europe, Middle East, Russia, Africa and Asia were the main markets, Elektroteks will put more attention on Americas in 2016. One of the biggest parts of Elektroteks production is to design automated turnkey mattress production projects which are fully tailor made for your company. With the last years turnkey project implementations, Elektroteks became globally the most experienced solution partner of mattress producers. The whole project is studied according each customer from the aspects of decreasing operational costs, increasing consistency of mattress quality, decreasing the dirt and the damages on the mattresses during the production, eliminating the unproductive effects of different variety of mattresses, ergonomics and your factory layout. At the end of the day, the turnkey project is implemented in order for you to increase the efficiency significantly with consistent product quality as well as easy management of the production. As for the new products in 2015, the full automatic mattress panel hemming machine, full automatic vacuum & rollpack machine and

various border machines became the new innovations and joined Elektroteks’ machinery family and gained high volume turnover within a short interval of time. The premium after sales service has always been one of the the biggest keys of Elektroteks success. Everything always starts after installing a machine at Elektroteks and service always has the number one priority among all other business activities.

Mr. Guler also says in 2016 various new innovations for quilting machines, border machines, packing machines and mattress finishing lines are on the way and soon will be revealed to the customers all over the world. He takes pride, “In Elektroteks family, the biggest motto is ‘never done enough.’ Each customer is a member of our family. Growing together is always faster, and stronger.”

Sova Bedding introduces innovative Penta mechanism at SleepWell Expo

Penta, a new mechanism for bedding, has more ability to move in four directions. It can be lowered and heightened on both sides.

Started to produce in Holland in 1995, Sova Design launches its brand new product Penta first in Sleepwell Expo under its new brand Sova Bedding. Penta has four movements, more than other competitive mechanisms. General manager of the company Mehtap Akkoyun informed about his company and its products.

155

On the company As a foreign company headquartered in Holland, we started to produce boxspring in 2008 and decided to produce them in Turkey at the end of 2015. So, we established a new production facility and began to produce at European standards. Penta: A different solution Penta has more ability to move in four directions. This is our superiority on similar products. There are only movements on the head side and on the leg side in our other mechanisms. Penta can be lowered and heightened on both sides.

Mehtap Akkoyun Sova Bedding General Manager

It is designed for home use Penta is especially designed for the needs of elderly and pa-

tients. Penta is the new form of beds normally used in hospitals and special care units for the needs of special people who need care at their homes. Like other similar products, this product has electrical control units and can be adjusted easily for variety of positions. Its outlook is also somehow different from professional products, and made of metal parts. Balanced distribution of weigh of the patients is important, so, our product is designed for this end. Handset that controls the movements provides high level of practicality to the user.

participate in major fairs both at home and abroad. Our products attract interest more than ever.

How do you evaluate the mattress industry of Turkey? Except for America and the Central Europe, the mattress industry conducted its activities as a sub-sector of furniture industry. However, the industrialists of the sector have become an independent sector within the last decade. Turkey is getting to be a center for the mattress industry. The hospitality and health tourism industries have been getting bigger and increasing mattress demand. In parallel of growing economy Turkish people are getting wealthy, living in bigger houses and asking more mattresses. On the other hand, according to a research, the life cycle of mattresses is also going down in Turkey. Turkey became a sourcing country and a gate between Asia and Europe.

What would you like to add? At Huzur Malzemecilik, innovation is not a department, it is a mindset that has become part of the company ethic and is embraced by every person from top management to the workers on the factory floor. We have integrated our facilities in order to upgrade customer satisfaction. Imagine a comfort conscious mattress that has its own natural defenses for all imperfections, we produce materials for it. Innovative, high-performance materials from Huzur Malzemecilik now make all these possible, minimizing the risk of allergies and discomfort, and allowing customers to enjoy a trouble-free sleep.

Mattress Industry Terms 172

Source: ISPA, International Sleep Products Association

Adjustable base: An electro-mechanical or manual bed frame construction that permits the raising and lowering of the head and/or foot portions of the mattress. Airbed: An air mattress with a core that is an air-filled vinyl bladder. Better airbeds are multichambered, covered with cushioning, upholstered with ticking and sold with a foundation. Anti-microbial fiber and foam: Treatment that inhibits the growth of microbial contaminates. Backing: Any fabric or sheeting material that is used during quilting to anchor the stitches.

Batting: See Cotton Felt. Bedding: Commonly used as a generic term for a mattress and foundation set, but may also apply to accessory items such as blankets, sheets, pillows, comforters, mattress pads, etc. Bedding ensemble: A complete sleep support system, consisting of a metal frame or a bed, a foundation and a mattress set. Bed frame: A metal or wood frame with legs used to support a mattress and foundation. Conventional height is 7-1/4 inches and the low-profile version is 5-3/4 inches when measured from the

floor to the bottom of the foundation. Generally a headboard can be attached. Metal frames are sometimes known as a “Hollywood frame. Bedsprings: Open-spring or wire fabric box springs without upholstery materials or cover. Binding tape: Fabric tape used to bind and close the mattress or foundation where the vertical and horizontal panels of outer ticking come together, providing the edge trimming for the mattress or foundation. See Tape and Tape Edge. Body impressions: Indentations occurring on the surface of a mattress

173

over time, due to the compression of materials by the human body. Bonnell: A knotted, round-top, hourglass-shaped steel wire coil. When laced together with crosswire helicals, these coils form the simplest innerspring unit, also referred to as a Bonnell. Border: The vertical side or edge of a mattress or foundation. Prebuilt borders are constructed by stitching together the ticking, foam or other filling materials and a backing material. Commonly quilted or vertical-stitched. Border rod: A heavy gauge wire rod attached to the perimeter of the innerspring unit (top and bottom) by means of a helical wire or metal clips. Boric acid: A chemical additive applied during the garnetting of cotton and/or other fibers to provide cigarette ignition resistance characteristics. Box spring: Also referred to as a “foundation.” A base for an innerspring mattress, consisting of coils or other forms of springs mounted on a wood or metal frame and secured with a wire-interlaced or welded-wire grid, topped with upholstery and insulating materials (felt, urethane or other resilient materials), and covered on the top and sides with ticking and on

the bottom with a dust cover. It is an important part of a bed set since it serves as a shock absorber, distributes weight, and supports and interacts with the innerspring mattress to properly support the body. Box-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised surface finishing treatment where a separate, sided and rectangular encasement of soft materials–usually with a tape edge–is attached via a welt to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Bunk bed: A two-tiered wood or metal frame designed to accommodate two mattresses, typically twin-size, one above the other. Some models allow the upper and lower units to be detached and used as separate beds. Bunkie: A mattress, usually twinsize, and platform base used on bunk beds. Cal 117: Refers to California Technical Bulletin 117, which specifies a vertical flame testing procedure for bedding and furniture component materials. Foam referred to as “Cal 117 foam” has passed this test. Carbon: The principal hardening element in steel. The higher the carbon content, the harder the metal and the more temper it will take, thus giving longer “memory.”

Cellulose acetate pad: Woody fiber compacted into a pad and used as an insulator. May be glued or sandwiched between plastic netting to help hold it together. Coil count: The number of coils in an innerspring unit. Though the count can effect weight distribution, it is not the determining factor for firmness. The count is usually based on the number of coils in a full-size unit. Coils: The individual wire springs that form an innerspring unit. See Hourglass, Continuous and Offset Coils. Coir pad: An insulator pad made from coconut husk fiber, garnetted, needled, bonded and pre-cut to size. Comfort system: Refers to the upholstery layers of the mattress, generally consisting of a combination of materials (cover, cushioning, topper pad, insulators, etc.). Conjugate polyester fiber: Spirally crimped fiber that is crimped chemically rather than thermally. Is very durable and resilient. Continuous coils: An innerspring configuration in which the rows of coils are formed from a single piece of wire. Conventional bedding products: Mattresses and foundations in the

174

conventional adult sizes of twin, twin extra long, full, full extra long, queen and king.

cally combinations of polyurethane foam, cotton felt, and/or mademade fibers.

Convertible sofa: A sofa with a bed folded beneath the seating surface, generally consisting of a mattress resting on a metal mechanism. Also called “sleep sofa” or “sofa sleeper.”

Damask: Woven ticking produced on a loom that has yarns running at 90-degree angles to each other, the warp and the weft. The damask design is woven into the fabric rather than printed on the surface.

Convoluted foam: Better known as “egg-crate” foam that is specially cut to produce hills and valleys, giving gentle softness and more surface comfort. Foam surface treatment is available in multiple patterns.

Density: A measure of weight per cubic volume, usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Often referred to when discussing foam.

Cornell test: Devised by Cornell University School of Hotel/Motel Administration. Designed to test cosmetic performance of bedding sets, such as body impression or support firmness. Two round surfaces are pounded into the finished product 100,000 times and checked periodically for failure or changes. Corner guards: Molded plastic or metal, (sometimes upholstered) fittings secured to foundation corners to prevent material damage from the bed frame. Cotton felt: Produced by a garnett machine which combs cotton and other fiber binders into a continuous web or layer. Several such layers combined are called cotton “batt”. For compressed cotton felt, thick layers of garnetted cotton fiber are mechanically compressed to reduce body impressions. Cotton linters: The short fibers adhering to the seed after the long staple fiber has been removed in the ginning process. Used in making cotton felt. Cotton pickers: “Fall out” from ginning or garnetting. These shorter staple cotton fibers are blended with linters to produce cotton felt. Crown: A convex surface on a mattress. Mattresses with a half-inch crown are a half-inch thicker at the center than at the edges. Cushioning: Materials that lie above the insulator and below the fabric covering in an innerspring mattress. These materials are typi-

Double tempering: Heating of wire components, usually in an oven, after they have been given shape or form and have been electronically stress-relieved. Refers to tempering coils as well as border rods and helicals in a complete spring unit. Dual-purpose: A broad term used to include all sleep pieces, which can be converted to other uses, including: convertible sofas, high-risers, daybeds, futons, etc. See Convertible Sofa. Dust cover: A woven or non-woven fabric attached to the underside of a foundation to prevent the collection of dust inside. May also be known as “sheeting” or “cambric.” Edge guard: Generally an extra component added to the edge of a mattress and/or box spring to give support on the sides. Engineered edge support: A special design where the coils on the outer edge of an innerspring unit are actually positioned under the border rod. Most units have the coils recessed from the edge, which can contribute to a “roll out of bed” feeling.

that is stitched together to better retain compression. Fiber pad: Usually refers to manmade or natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.) that are garnetted, needled, carded and/or bonded together. Often used in quilting panels for mattress tops. Filler cloth: Refers to a plain fabric used on the top of a foundation instead of ticking. Commonly offers non-skid characteristics. Flanging: The process whereby a strip of fabric is sewn to the edge of the mattress cover and, in the assembly process, secured to the perimeter of the innerspring unit to prevent the cover and filling materials from shifting. Foam foundation: Consists of a built-up wood slat frame covered with a sheet of cardboard or similar material, topped with at least 2” of foam and covered with ticking. Foundation: Any base or support for a mattress, sometimes used as a generic term for box spring. A foundation may be made entirely of wood or a combination of wood and steel or steel springs. See Box Spring and Foam Foundation. Futon: A Japanese-style mattress construction, consisting of a cover and filling material, which is typically cotton but can be innerspring and/or foam. Garnetting: A mechanical process whereby short cotton fibers and/ or other fibers are combed into a specific orientation and formed into a thin web, which are then layered to create a batting used as an upholstery material. See Cotton Felt.

Euro-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised, squared-off surface finishing treatment filled with soft comfort layers and attached to the mattress upholstery at the tapeedge.

Gauge, coil: A measurement of the diameter of the steel wire used in coil construction. Wire gauge for innerspring coils range from 12.5 to 17. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire.

Fabric cover: Cloth or textile material woven, knitted or felted of any fiber or mixture of fibers. Often referred to as “ticking” or mattress fabric.

Gel foam: Generally a visco-elastic foam that is infused with beads or swirls of gel during the foam pouring process.

Fales pad: Compressed cotton felt

Hair pads: Horse tail or mane, cattle tail or hog hair, which has been

175

processed and curled for use as a mattress or upholstery filler. Hammocking: An undesirable characteristic sometimes associated with worn out or low-end mattresses. When weight is placed in the center, the corners tend to rise and bow in response to deep compression much like a hammock. Terms “dish” and “sagging” also used to describe this phenomenon. Hand: Term used to describe the touch or feel of fabrics (e.g., soft, smooth, etc.). Hand-tied: The process of hand-lacing the coils in a box spring together with twine. Seldom used, this process has been replaced with modern technology and new designs. Headboard: An upright unit of wood, metal, plastic, or upholstered material, to be attached at the head of a bed, usually with the bed frame. Helical: A tightly-coiled, elongated wire used in the manufacture of innerspring units to join individual coils to each other and to the border rod.

High-contour mattress: Measures 9” – 13” thick. A mattress under 9” thick is considered “standard”; over 13” thick is considered “custom.” High riser: Usually a frame or sofa with two mattresses of equal size without a backrest. The frame slides out with the lower bed and rises to form a full bed or two single beds. Hog ring: Metal ring used to secure the insulator and flange material to the innerspring unit. Takes its name from its similarity to the metal ring in a hog’s nose. Hourglass coils: Coils that taper inward from top to middle and outward from middle to bottom, thus resembling an hourglass in shape. Employed in bonnell and offset coil designs. Hybrid: Commonly used industry term for a mattress that combines an innerspring unit with specialty foams such as visco-elastic or latex. Ideal weight distribution: Equalization of support in such a way as to eliminate pressure points that cause discomfort resulting in tossing and turning. Best achieved

with coil on coil construction and properly designed insulation and cushioning material. Innerspring unit construction (for mattresses): The spring construction used as the main support system inside an innerspring mattress. Some common types are: pocketed (see Marshall) and all metal (i.e., bonnell, offset and continuous wire). Insulator: Any material used on top and bottom of an innerspring unit to prevent the upholstery layers from cupping down into the coils. Some common types are: a fiber pad, non-woven fabric, netting, wire mesh or foam pad. Knit: A basic polyester or nylon ticking fabric produced through a knitting process (tricot) rather than weaving. Designs are printed onto the surface. Lacing wire: Finer gauges of wire used to form helicals. Latex: A flexible foam created from a water dispersion of rubber, either from the rubber tree (natural latex) or a man-made, petroleum-based product (synthetic latex). Most

176

latex used in mattresses today is a combination of natural and synthetic latex rubber. LFK: An unknotted offset coil with a cylindrical or columnar shape. Link fabric: A wire foundation for bedsprings, cots, studio couches, sofabed mechanisms and gliders. So called because the fabric is a succession of metal links. Marshall: A type of innerspring construction in which thin gauge, barrel-shaped, knotless coils are encased in fabric pockets. Also known as “pocketed coils.” Mattress: A manufactured product to sleep on, consisting of various resilient materials covered with an outer ticking. Comes from the Arabic term “matrah” meaning to throw down. Early Arabs traveled with their bedding and threw it down on the ground or floor at night. Memory: The ability of tempered steel, foam or some fabrics to return to their original state after being compressed or stretched. Mesh: Plastic netting generally stretched across the face of an innerspring unit as an insulator. Microcoils: A low-profile metal spring unit, typically with individually wrapped coils, used in the top comfort layers of a mattress. Molded foam core (for mattresses): A core made of flexible foam is made in molds and used as the main support system in a foam mattress. Mounting: Attachment of a box spring unit to a wood or metal frame. Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing process for which high strength, lightweight, non-woven construction fabrics are produced. These fabrics are produced by garnetting fibers, entangling or inner-locking these fibers together by a series of needles and then mechanically bonding or fusing them together via heat to produce a fabric without glue or binders. Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing process used to produce

insulator pads and non-woven fabrics whereby loose, garnetted fibers are inner-locked by a series of “needles.” This process usually requires additional bonding to keep the fibers in place. Offset coils: An hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helicals. Orthopedic: Generalized term to imply set gives proper postural alignment and support. Should not necessarily mean hard or board feeling. Proper support with a degree of comfort to contour to the body is best. Panel: The part of the ticking that constitutes the top sleep surface of a mattress, as well as the bottom of a mattress on a two-sided bed. Pedestal-type metal or wood bed frame: A low-profile bed frame with a solid pedestal base underneath each side of the frame, instead of legs. Pillow-top mattress: A mattress featuring a surface finishing treatment where a separate encasement of soft materials is attached to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Plus 4 edge: Two border rods engineered with one inside of the other and designed so that they make the edge 4% firmer than the balance of the sleep surface to eliminate that “roll out of bed”

feeling and edge sag. Pocketed coil: See Marshall. Polyurethane foam: See Urethane Foam. Print: A ticking fabric, which can be a woven or non-woven sheeting, commonly of synthetic fiber composition, on which a design has been printed. Quilting: The surface treatment in which the cover, foam and/or other fibers are sewn together, using various stitch patterns on quilting machinery, including scroll or panel quilters (single needle) and multi-needle quilters. Resilience: Surface liveliness and spring-back ability. Rollator test: An approximately 230 lb., six-sided roller is passed across a sleep set to determine the structural strengths or weaknesses of the set and components (i.e., foam or quilt failure, breaking of helicals and coils). The industry standard to duplicate the life of a mattress is 100,000 passes. Rollaway bed/cot: A portable metal bed/cot with a frame that folds in half with the mattress when not in use so it can be rolled away into a closet (or elsewhere) for compact storage. Sheeting: a woven or non-woven fabric other than knits that have a degree of sizing and are somewhat stiff. Side rail: A metal or wood rail, which hooks into the outside edges of a headboard and footboard

177

to provide the support base for a foundation and mattress. Sisal: A product of the henequen plant formed into a pad and used as an insulator. Named after the. small port of Sisal in Yucatan. Slats: Narrow strips of wood used to support the coils in the box spring frame. Also used in a bedstead to support the box spring. Sleep Products Safety Council hangtag: Used voluntarily by bedding producers since 1987, the safety hangtag program provides critical consumer information about the safe use of sleep products. Manufacturers certify that they use the tag only on mattresses that meet the Federal Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads. The tag is available in a hangtag or permanent label. Smooth top: A plain surfaced mattress, neither tufted nor quilted. Also called button-free. Spring wire: Wire made from high carbon steel, characterized by toughness, strength and ductility. Typically furnished in 8 to 18 gauge for bedding industry applications. Steel unit construction (for box springs): The spring construction used as the main support system inside a box spring. Stitch bonded pad: See Fales Pad. Straightline deflection: Pertains to mattress innerspring construction and refers to the constant ratio between stress and strain, weight and movement. The benefit is that constant support is provided regardless of the weight applied. No bottoming out of soft spots. Basically it means that two people of unequal weight, sleeping on the same mattress, receive the same support. Stretch knit: A heavy-weight mattress ticking consisting of a top layer, bottom layer and filling material knitted together and intermittently stitched to keep the filling yarns stable. Super zoned box spring frame: A support, generally wood, attached

longitudinally to the underside of a foundation for added support where the main body weight rests. Another important structural point is that the vertical slats are turned on edge for added strength. This is extremely important on queen sizes and for 4-poster beds where typically no center support is provided. Also known as a “center rail.” Tape: Fabric material that closes over the rough-sewn edge where the top and bottom panels are joined to the border of a mattress or box spring. Tape edge: A specified type of sewing machine designed to stitch binding tape around the top and bottom edges of the mattress, joining the panels with the border and closing the mattress. Tempering: Heat treatment of wire to reduce brittleness. Accomplished by electric charge, oven heat or both. Also known as “stress relieved”. Ticking: Fabrics for covering mattresses and foundations. Common types include: stretch knits, woven damasks, knits and nonwovens. Torsion bars: A type of spring system used in box springs characterized by square-shaped wire forms. Trundle bed: A low bed that is rolled under a larger bed. In some constructions, the lower bed springs up to form a full bed or two single beds as in a high riser. Tufting: Consists of passing twine, cords or tape vertically through the mattress from top to bottom, knotting and securing the loops thus formed with tufts, buttons, or lacing. The purpose is to hold the mattress filling in place. Uniflex grid: A steel wire grid used to bridge the “mouth” of the coils on an innerspring unit to prevent “pocketing” of insulation down into the coil and to eliminate “coil feel.” Also helps to distribute the body weight of a person. Urethane foam: Synthetic (chemically foamed) flexible urethane used for mattress cores and as a

cushioning material. As a core, it’s the main support system. Generic term covering both polyester and polyether foams. Ventilator: Metal or plastic screens attached to the sides and sometimes the ends of mattresses to permit the passage of air. Unnecessary with normal high quality materials used today, except for hospital type mattresses with wetproof covers. Visco-elastic foam: Also known as “memory foam.” Slow recovery urethane foams that are temperature sensitive. They conform to the body and distribute pressure according to body heat and dynamics. Waterbed: A sleep system employing a water-filled vinyl bladder as its primary support system. Original models relied on rigid framing to contain the vinyl components and were known as a “hardside”. Newer styles consist of vinyl components (bladder and liner) typically encased in foam and made to look like a conventional mattress, usually paired with a regular upholstered foundation. Also called a “softside” waterbed. All versions are sometimes referred to as “flotation beds.” Welded grid top: Basic wire welded into a lattice to which box spring coils, formed wire or modules are fastened. Offers even weight distribution, yet allows some flex and give. Wood bed: A bed with a headboard and footboard made of wood, having side rails of wood or metal that support the foundation and mattress. Wood frame (for box springs): The wood frame in a box spring on which the spring construction is mounted. Woven stripe: A once ubiquitous woven ticking with colored stripes. The style was referred to as “ACA”, the traditional designation for the 8 oz. blue- and white-striped ticking that has mostly fallen out of favor and is seldom produced.
