Good night, sleep tight! What is truly important when choosing a bed is comfort, pressure relief and alignment. New sleep technologies today have been developed to incorporate these key elements of healthy sleep into your bedding solution. The fairs are the best places to source these features. As a developing country with a population of almost 80 million, Turkey is a great market for the sleep products industry for both buying and selling. And this huge market has gained a very promising show event.
From raw materials to the finished mattresses, including the supply industry, components, machinery and technology, SLEEPWELL EXPO Istanbul successfully offered all segments of the sleep products industry. It gave the signals of rising to be an internationally recognized world fair. It blinks to the future with big hopes and the horizon is very bright.
THE SLEEP ZONE inspired the professionals…
A special trend and testing area was dedicated in the main foyer of the fairground namely THE SLEEP ZONE where latest mattresses of 16 manufacturers were displayed for the testing of professionals and consumers and to showcase the latest trends in the industry. This part attracted a great deal of interest by the visitors as well as by the exhibitors. You might find us at most important events with our next issue. As soon as the new year starts we will be at Heimtextil-Frankfurt and imm cologne in addition to Ismob and Imob furniture fairs to be held in Istanbul.

Sleepwell Expo 2016 and after The first and the only fair organization on mattress and mattress technologies was held successfully in Istanbul for the third time last month. A great number of visitors from 60 countries have visited the event where about a hundred firms exhibited their products. I do not count on the loyal visitors coming form Turkey. The fair has satisfied both sides, visitors and customers in a period when several problems have been encountered in the region.
Ömer Faruk Görün SLEEP WELL EXPO Project & Sales Manager
There was a great attraction as an innovation in the fair: The Sleep Zone. Sixteen firms have showed their mattresses in this special section of the fair venue where visitors find opportunities for laying down, testing and even selfie’ing on 16 different model of mattresses. General opinion on this performance was satisfactory and people demanded more space and additional functions. They advised to organize a Sleep Room, a separate section where people may want to sleep for testing. I don’t prefer to disclose the details so early, but there will be more innovative solutions in the next edition of Sleepwell Expo. As our publication Sleep Well/ Tech, we are about to enter a new year. The international event of the industry Interzum Cologne, a biannual event, will be held this year. As most of you know, the
inaugural edition of our publication was first launched in Interzum fair in May 2011. So, this edition will be our forth Interzum service for our readers. It will be greater event where we distribute our publication in our private booth in the fair and in addition to its regular delivery scheme. I forecast that the year 2017 will be a fast growing period for the Turkish economy after being freed from environmental and internal restraints. A belief is prevailing that as one of the dynamic segments of the industry, mattress sector will experience a brilliant period next year. We are ready to contribute on the efforts of people in the industry with both our publications and Sleep Well Expo organization. A referendum is seen on the horizon in 2017 for the presidency and constitutional reform aiming political stability. Expectations are seen as positive. In this case, if Turkish people say yes to the new system, it will be a doping effect on the industry. Investors will gain confidence for the future and invest more. They may find it useful to set longer term targets, for 5 to 10 event to 15 years, for their future expansions. A bright future awaits us in the horizon, so we keep working hard. See you on January issue, which will be full of several innovative events and projects.

Knitted elastic materials for mattress covers are continuously
gaining more popularity and importance. On the one hand this is due to functional reasons because customers’ demands with regard to mattresses and thus to cover materials are increasing with the increasing use of adjustable and motorized bed bases. On the other hand this is also due to comfort reasons because nothing is more comfortable and pleasant to a sleeper’s skin and body than a soft, elastic fabric covering the mat-
tress, which reassumes its initial position following strain. Bodet & Horst’s in-house development department consisting of highly qualified designers and textile technicians develop individual fabric solutions for you. The company’s products can be seen at its booth in Interzum 2015, 5-8 May, Hall 10.2 Stand F 040.

Foam crisis in mattress industry, not dollar crisis Cost surges in chemicals, basic inputs of foam production that are demanded by mattress and furniture manufacturers has put forward the need for strategic investments that reduces dependence to imports. Companies are prune to the effects of rising prices in imported stuff. This time, major producers of chemicals have been affected deeply. Consequently, the surge of prices is swapped to mattresses industry, one of the major buyers of foams. First the disclose of Bayer Material’s that stopped pro-
Mattress producers seek solutions in foam business duction of TDI in November, and the fire happened in the Lumpertheim, Germany factory of BASF has stopped the supply and fuelled the prices in the markets. Seeing a huge opportunity for them, Chinese producers have heavily increased their prices. Fears are prevailing that the situation will be permanent. Buyers of TDI said that prices have started to rise in September and in October they tripled. As a result, foam producers have reflected this surge to their buyers and the prices were up to 70 %. Industry seeks solution to this crisis level problem. Ismail Dogan, president of Mosder, furniture industrialists association, says, “We, as the mat-
tress and furniture industrialists, had been buying chemicals from abroad. This is a global problem. It is obvious that we will not be able to procure raw materials by December. We prepared an action plan to overcome the situation.” Ahmet Gulec, president of Mosfed, federation of furniture industrialists and businesspeople said, “The crises that started when the economy have began to revive, has affected our members seriously. We hope that prices will down soon.” Board chairman of Kayseri chamber of industry Mehmet Buyuksimitci emphasized on the importance of furniture industry on employment, he said, “As it was applied in the past, rate of value added tax may be lowered temporarily in order to prevent falling of sales. He said, “We still seek ways out in the city that about half of the total production of foams is made.”

OEKO-TEX Brand: expanding and refreshing Zurich - Textile manufacturers, sourcers, brands, and retailers around the world know that every January there will be an update to the OEKO-TEX® test methods and limit values for harmful substances. This January, the textile industry can expect the same but they will also see the complete roll out of the new, cohesive OEKO-TEX® branding strategy that was previewed a few months ago. In addition, OEKO-TEX® plans to unveil new products in January, as well. With the portfolio of OEKO-TEX® products growing rapidly in response to textile industry needs— the most recent addition was DETOX TO ZERO by OEKO-TEX® to help eliminate hazardous substances by 2020—the new brand architecture comprehensively aligns all services and independent certifications under the OEKO-TEX® banner in a way that is recognizable throughout the global market. OEKO-TEX® will prominently feature the brand’s tag line, CONFIDENCE IN TEXTILES, in every product logo to connect to the OEKO-TEX® heritage for protecting consumers and
®
supporting sustainable products and manufacturing processes. “OEKO-TEX® has worked for twenty-five years to help textile product companies reduce hazardous chemicals and to increase the sustainability of the industry,” says OEKO-TEX® General Secretary, Georg Dieners. “Our OEKO-TEX® product range will continue to expand with the worldwide textile supply chain and the increasing challenges it poses for our customers. We are proud of the confidence we have earned through that work as well as the confidence the OEKO-TEX® brand gives to consumers everywhere.” The new OEKO-TEX® brand identity kicks off OEKO-TEX’s 25th Anniversary, which will be celebrated next year. Founded in 1992 in direct response to public outcry against dangerous chemicals in textiles, the International OEKO-TEX® Association has grown to sixteen member textile testing and research institutes with offices in more than 60 countries. The OEKO-TEX® product portfolio has expanded with textile supply chain
globalization and will grow as the textile market and the public’s expectations change. “OEKO-TEX® has evolved over twenty-five years but our values remain constant and deeply rooted in safety, quality, and sustainability,” continues Dieners. The new OEKO-TEX ® brand identities will begin rolling out immediately and will be in full force with the annual January update. The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® and STeP by OEKO-TEX® design updates have been completed by the end of October. Stäubli’s new facilities in Turkey
Most of Boyteks’ 300plus weaving machines are equipped with Jacquard machines, and most of these are from Stäubli. Thus Boyteks is also one of the biggest Jacquard weavers in Turkey, and has become an important and trendsetting partner of Stäubli.
After months of architectural project planning and intense working at the construction site, Stäubli celebrated the official opening of its new facilities situated on the Eastern side of Istanbul - in Tuzla. The success story of Stäubli in Turkey started in the 60s with a renowned agent in order to introduce the extensive range of textile machinery in the promising Turkish market. Decades later, in 1995 it was decided to found Stäubli Turkey to fulfill a clear mission: serve the Turkish market even more intensively and extend step by step the Stäubli organization. Mr. M. Sinangil, as the first employee, moved into the rented headquar-
ters in Istanbul at that time. He is still running the Stäubli organization successfully today. 2016 marks another historical cornerstone of the Stäubli history in Turkey - its 20 years of existence! During this build up of the group the Textile, Connector and Robotic activities came to fruition. All activities gained substantial market shares in their respective fields of business. Stäubli Turkey is now employing some 60 people. Turkey is today, more than ever, the arch to Europe and has ambitious goals in terms of increasing its export statistics and expanding the local production and service
23
industries to serve European - but also international customers. This offers great prospects to visionary mechatronics solution providers like Stäubli. In order to succeed, the local Stäubli team will be more than ever supported by the international Group to capture the chances offered by this market. Meanwhile all Turkish salesmen, administrative people and technicians on-site continue to maintain their common aim that is to satisfy all Stäubli customers throughout the country. With this celebration the local team embarked upon the journey of serving customers for the next coming decades. Mr. M. Sinangil said: “we always believed in this country. This is why we made the investment in the first place. We look forward to actively supporting our existing and prospective customers going forward.”
Market leader in upholstery and mattress ticking Most of Boyteks’ 300-plus weaving machines are equipped with Jacquard machines, and most of these are from Stäubli. Thus Boyteks is also one of the biggest Jacquard weavers in Turkey, and has become an important and trend-setting partner of Stäubli. According to General Manager Mustafa Yildirim, Stäubli Jacquard machines boast excellent ergonomic and robust design, they are easy to maintain, and they have a strong harness that perfectly matches the high performance of the machine. Mr Yildirim is also impressed with the quality of service provided by the Stäubli after-sales team. “We have experienced this quality now for more than 16 years. Whenever we have had a problem or needed support, we knew that we can trust in the machinery supplier and that capable technicians would show up in our facilities to provide solutions. That’s why we have confidence in Stäubli”, says Mr. Yildirim.
Be innovative! Mustafa Yildirim points out that Boyteks is known as a highly innovative carpet supplier. Customers expect and insist on getting the latest and most innovative products when they buy from Boyteks. Sometimes customers even ask for exclusivity with certain products, and this will be granted depending
on the quantity ordered. One-way that Boyteks maintains its innovation leadership is by using a special feature of the ALPHA systems: special effects for carpet weaving. With the “Magic Weft Effect” different weft threads of each weft insertion line remain visible along the pick line, making possible innovative design variations with multiple colors.

“Invest in a good pillow and mattress” “Think ergonomically” Experts say that we don’t often think about our spines when we’re lying in bed. They emphasize that our sleep posture can determine our spine wellness – and whether or not we experience back pain. “American Academy of Spine Physicians” listed “30 Tips For Better Spine Health” Some of them are as follows:
Invest in a good pillow and mattress: The average individual spends approximately one third of life sleeping, therefore; proper support of the spine and head during this period will strongly influence spine health. A good pillow and mattress will also facilitate more restorative sleep.

In some instances an individual may benefit by the use of more the one pillow. There are different types of pillows. When you sleep you do not have conscious control over your body position. A good mattress will support the spine no matter how many times one moves during the night.
Good sleep support: Sleeping on a supportive mattress. Do not sleep on your stomach. If you sleep on your side, place a pillow between your knees to reduce rotation of the low back. If you sleep on your side, try to keep your legs bent at the knees and at the hips, a position which reduces the stress on the low back.
Invest in good chairs: Individuals spend the majority of their lives in a sitting position. Chairs greatly influence sitting posture. Poor chairs contribute to chronic spine problems; well- designed chairs promote spine health.
Think ergonomically: Seek the optimum work environment. This requires an adjustable workstation to properly support the extremities and the spine. An efficient work environment will include proper phone equipment, an adjustable chair, an efficient keyboard and adjustable monitor. The work surface should have adjustable height. It will also require proper lighting. A footrest will contribute to reduced stress on the spine. Assume a relaxed yet supported posture.
Use products that promote good posture and spine health: Utilize products which support the spine from the ground up. Use support-enhancing products that can be added to poorly designed furniture and seating. For furher information please visit: http://www. spinephysicians.org/

Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program diverts 150,000 mattresses from Connecticut’s landfills
Annual Report Announces Initial Success of Nation’s First Statewide, Industry-Led Mattress Recycling Program
HARTFORD, CT (PRWEB) NOVEMBER 04, 2016
Last week, the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) presented its inaugural Annual Report of the Connecticut Bye Bye Mattress Program to Connecticut municipal leaders and state regulators. The report summarized the Program’s performance from its inception in May 2015 through the end of the state’s 2016 fiscal year (June 30). The Program has already exceeded, met or is on pace to achieve nearly all benchmarks set in its
plan, which was approved by the state in 2014. Highlights of the Program’s initial success in Connecticut include: * Recycled 150,000 mattresses. If these mattresses were laid end to end, they would span the state of Connecticut and then some – that’s more than 100 miles! * Recovered more than 2,800 tons of steel, foam and other materials that will be made into new useful products. That’s equivalent to 400 elephants.
34
* Expanded the collection network to 101 free drop-off sites. More than 2.3 million residents across Connecticut have easy access to the Bye Bye Mattress collection site network. “We are pleased with the Program’s productive start and will continue to work with city leaders, businesses and the state to improve the Program, expand the number of communities served, and increase the volume of mattresses recycled,” said Ryan Trainer, President of MRC and the International Sleep Products Association. Industry-led recycling programs like Bye Bye Mattress will play an important part in helping Connecticut reach its goal to divert 60 percent of materials from disposal by 2024. “We applaud the mattress industry for developing a successful statewide program
under the mattress stewardship law that has already recycled thousands of mattresses in an environmentally sound manner,” said Robert Klee, Commissioner of Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. “This program has created jobs, recovered vast quantities of resources to be reused, saved municipalities $1.5 million in disposal costs and given residents an easy way to recycle a cumbersome item.” Bye Bye Mattress allows Connecticut residents to drop-off
used mattresses at participating collection sites, collection events and recycling facilities free of charge. This collection network is made possible by the $9 recycling fee that Connecticut consumers pay when they buy a new mattress or box spring. The fee provides for collection containers, transporting the discarded mattresses and recycling costs. Connecticut residents can find their nearest participating collection site, collection event or recycling facility at http:// www.ByeByeMattress.com. MRC is also working with more than 130 other public and private entities, including mattress retailers, hotels, military bases, universities and healthcare facilities in Connecticut to divert their discarded mattresses from the solid waste stream. In addition to its Connecticut program, MRC
36
operates Bye Bye Mattress in California and Rhode Island. To learn more, visit http://www. ByeByeMattress.com. Recycling Facts More than 80% of a used mattress’ components can be recycled. Metal springs, foam, wood and fibers can all be made into new useful products. For example: * The steel springs are melted and used to make new appliances, building materials and other steel products. * The foam can be turned into carpet underlayment or animal bed padding. * The wooden frames can be shredded to produce landscaping mulch. * The cotton and other fiber can be used in industrial oil filters and other textile applications. The Recycling Process Most recyclers currently use the following process to dismantle a mattress: 1. The top mattress layer (including the outer fabric) is cut, peeled and separated from the mattress’ interior materials, which can include fiber, polyurethane or latex foam and steel springs. 2. The interior materials are pulled apart and separated by type. 3. Foam, fiber and other soft commodities are baled and compressed for transport to scrap dealers or companies that will consume them to make new products.
4. Metal springs from mattresses and box springs are extracted and sent to scrap recyclers that sell them to steel mills and foundries. 5.
Wood is chipped or shredded.
About Mattress Recycling Council The Mattress Recycling Council is a non-profit organization formed by the mattress industry to operate recycling programs in states that have enacted mattress recycling laws – Connecticut, California and Rhode Island. Each state’s program is funded by a recycling fee that is collected when a mattress or box spring is sold. The fees pay for the transportation and recycling of discarded mattresses and box springs. To learn more about MRC and each state law, go to http://www.mattressrecyclingcouncil.org.

Outlast materials generate an optimum sleeping climate ÂŽ
Humidity is found to be the key for climate comfort
52
What is “climate comfort” about? Climate comfort is a term often used in connection with the weather. But when looking at the human body – especially in sleeping environments – it is obvious that climate comfort plays a role in better sleep. However, “temperature” is not the only factor, as there are many subjective perceptions involved. Interesting: Humidity is widely agreed as big contributor to being uncomfortable. Outlast Technologies, market leader in phase change materials (PCM), has examined the topic and has generated some interesting results. “We have run various tests to investigate the optimum sleeping climate,” says Martin Bentz, President of Outlast Technologies LLC, Golden/USA. “We are often asked to give evidence of the
in creating a comfortable sleeping environment.”
It must be dry
performance of our heat managing Outlast® products. Therefore we have looked at other test methods than climate chamber testing and have gained valuable knowledge demonstrating that the proactive nature of phase change materials positively influences sleeping comfort. Quickly, we found that ‘temperature’ is not the only indicator
A third party expert in Europe in the field around microclimate, Christoph Russ - owner of c.russNETCONSULT, Otterfing/ Germany - says: “An important requirement for human comfort perception is the quality of the surrounding climate. But what is comfortable? What makes sense to one may not be the same for others – some will prefer warmer environments, and some will prefer cooler. But just with humidity, there is a wide consensus that being dry is more comfortable.” He continues by saying, “scientific studies on the correlation between subjective climate perception and objective climate confirm these
54
same points. The evaluation of human comfort perception with the measurement of absolute humidity clearly outranges the one with temperature. Simply speaking: When a human perspires, the body is attempting to cool itself. When it doesn’t perspire, typically the body is comfortable.”
Climate comfort = less perspiration Excess humidity is critical in terms of discomfort. Therefore one important key to climate comfort is efficiently managing moisture. Christoph Russ confirms that the point of climate comfort is reached when the human – theoretically speaking – does just not perspire. “Then the climate is perfect.” In ad-
dition, Russ shows evidence with his testing method THG AreaView providing a live insight into the thermoregulation of a human body. “This method measures the individual’s limit between climate comfort and discomfort.” In general, there are two ways of optimizing the climate comfort: the reactive deduction of humidity (humidity transport) and the proactive limitation of the production of humidity.
Convective trap Less sweating, less humidity makes the difference in sleeping comfort. “Once the body finds ways to reduce overheating without perspiring it will take advantage
of it in order to save energy,” confirms Christoph Russ. This is exactly where Outlast® materials make sense since they proactively manage moisture through the absorbance of heat. The body reacts in a sensible way to temperature changes and normally starts sweating when it is getting too warm. Perspiration is a mechanism of the body to release excess heat and to regulate the body temperature. “The perspiration causes humidity beneath a duvet which, in spite of its intention to cool, actually increases the perception of temperature by approximately 2°C,” says Russ. “We call this a convective trap which is caused by a poor exchange of
56
airflow. The individual then would need to move positions or remove the covers to create airflow - the consequence is a disturbed sleep.” It is different with Outlast® technology: As Outlast® products absorb excess heat the body does not have to perspire to achieve cooling. The production of transpiration is already reduced, providing the additional benefit of better hygiene. This is a huge advantage - especially in bedding.
The evidence The evidence: The independent test system THG SleepView (developed by Christoph Russ) makes it possible to visualize the benefits of Outlast® products related to heat and moisture, and to document the numerous advantages of the smart performance material. “We have conducted various tests with THG SleepView visually demonstrating that Outlast® materials can reduce moisture significantly during the phase where you fall asleep,” says Volker Schuster, Technical Director of Outlast Europe GmbH. “As the data sensors of this new measuring system are very small they can be built directly inside the microclimate to measure the air between the skin and duvet – this is where comfort plays a role,” says Volker Schuster. “We have found out that Outlast® materials support humans in their attempt to cool down the organism during the phase of falling asleep producing more than 10% less humidity. A very good start into the night leading to an efficient improvement of comfort.”
The Outlast® difference Phase change materials help to actively balance temperature and to reduce humidity during sleep significantly. “We found out, that a
duvet with an Outlast® PCM fiberfill can reduce absolute humidity by 48% compared to a traditional duvet,” adds Martin Bentz. “This is an impressive added value,” says Bentz, “which clearly demonstrates the proactive way our technology works. It is very important for us that our Outlast® products optimize the climate inside bedding proactively – contrary to other technologies which work through humidity transport.” This is exactly the Outlast® difference: This
technology works continuously to manage heat and moisture while reducing sweat production right from the beginning, so less humidity is created inside the bed. The Outlast® difference then influences a person’s overall comfort that leads to a better night’s rest. Bentz adds: “Naturally, we lose up to one liter of sweat each night. Outlast® materials can reduce this amount by an average of 50%. You sleep drier and more comfortably.”
58
Outlast® technology Outlast® technology was originally developed for NASA to protect astronauts from temperature fluctuations in space. Outlast® technology utilizes phase change materials (PCM) that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort. Outlast® technology is comparable to ice in a drink; as it changes from solid to liquid, it absorbs heat and cools the drink, keeping that drink at the desired temperature for a longer period of time. Outlast® phase change materials work in the same way. The PCMs have the capacity to absorb, store and release excess heat. This gives any product containing Outlast® technology the ability to continually regulate the skin’s microclimate. As the skin gets hot, the heat is absorbed, and as it cools, that heat is released.
Outlast® technology is not wicking technology, which manages moisture by reacting to your sweat and pulling it away from the skin. Outlast® technology will proactively manage heat while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. That’s the Outlast® difference. The benefits of Outlast® products at a glance: •Absorbs excess body heat •Manages moisture •Reduces overheating •Reduces chilling •Reduces perspiration •Continuously adapts to thermal changes Outlast presents the newest innovations at Heimtextil from 12 to 15 January, 2016, in Frankfurt; Hall 8.0, Stand D 74.

From raw materials to the finished mattresses, including the supply industry, components, machinery and technology, SLEEPWELL EXPO Istanbul is the event covering all segments of the sleep products industry. Held in Istanbul Expo Center, 2023 October 2016, the last edition of Sleepwell Expo - Mattress and Technologies Fair, which is the first and only fair in Turkey in its field, became a venue where 76 exhibitors welcomed some 4,200 professional visitors. Despite a minor fall in numbers the final figures made happy both, the organizers and the exhibitors because of the fact that there were many negative happenings in and around the country. Running towards its major targets of 2023 set by the government, Turkey continues to pursue its development worldwide with its rapidly increasing population, advantageous geography, and contribution of exports by its
65 65
advantageous geography. One of the most important sectors in Turkey, without any doubt, is the mattress industry, mattress machinery and components industry. Developments, innovations and example solidarity of the sector which has been performed in the mattress sector in recent years, have become the factors which affect the sleep products sector positively. With the same token, many positive economic indications which have been performed on behalf of the country and the sector in recent years, many regulations and directives made for the business volume and the mattress sector which has grown depending on the flow of foreign investments, indicate the importance of the SLEEPWELL Fair. The mattress main sector, sub-industry, machinery and equipment fair, which has been awaited for a long time by all sleep products industry professionals, was successfully held for the 3rd time in Istanbul Fair Center, which is located opposite of the Ataturk International Airport.
66 66
THE SLEEP ZONE A special trend and testing area was dedicated in the main foyer of the fairground namely THE SLEEP ZONE where latest mattresses of 16 manufacturers were displayed for the testing of professionals and consumers and to showcase the latest trends in the industry. This part attracted a great deal of interest by the visitors as well as by the exhibitors. The mattress industry in Turkey has reached the sales figures of over 4 million in the local market in 2014. 95 percent of the market has been consisted of spring mattresses and remaining 5 percent of foam mattresses. The size of the market is very close to TL 1 billion and the growth rate is 7%. 10 thousand mattresses of Turkey’s total 20 thousand daily are produced in Kayseri which is followed by Istanbul and Izmir. There are more than 400 manufacturers in Kayseri. The production capacity of these firms approaches to 2.7 million. Kayseri holds the half of the total production with 2.5 million mattresses. The share of the sector in the foreign market is over 100 million dollars. Kayseri performs more than half of the total export value. The mattresses, which are produced in Kayseri, are exported mainly to France, Germany and The Netherlands and other European countries and the different countries of the Middle East. According to the info released by the Ministry of Health, 90 thousand of the bed capacity of the total 130 thousand at the hospitals will be changed and improved to advanced technology in a fouryear period. All of these made SLEEPWELL EXPO more important and it seems that the future editions of the show will gain more ground.

TESTIMONIALS‌ We conducted a survey about what the exhibitors say about the show. Over 90% expressed their satisfaction and they highlighted their expectation that the fair will grow very fast to be one of the world fairs in the industry. The survey follows:

Artintechs Muammer Alparslan Sahin Domestic Sales Manager We produce systems for exhibiting mattresses, pillows and home textile products. Besides, we produce carpets and ceramic systems. We aim to introduce new products to the market. In our products, our aim is to be able to exhibit more products in lesser spaces. Our strategy depends on this understanding. We believe that our products are helpful for our customers. Sleepwell Expo is a fair that mattress manufacturers can find all their needs in this fair. We wish that companies would appreciate its value for their businesses and behave accordingly. Turkey is in a good position in mattress business, as well. It is also valid for tourism and trade. We thank for all you have provided us.

Asya Orme Hakan Erzurumlu Marketing Manager During the four-day period of the event, we reached all our expectations. We saw visitors coming from four different geographical regions of the world during fair. We are happy. We want to be here next year as well. The fair was certainly beneficial for our company. Foreign visitors came here especially for Sleepwell Expo. This is a sure sign of the effectiveness of fair organization in the world when mattress is concerned. It will be better next year. It was a beautiful fair. I thank you all.

Aydin Textile Gurfidan Yasar Mattress-Ticking Fabric Marketing Manager This is our second participation. It is a good fair in terms of combining all players of the mattress industry in one location. Its covering all components of the mattress industry and having more visitors from abroad were good for us. Though there were less people as domestic buyers, it will be more next year. It was also good for having a separate organization for mattresses out of furniture industry. Mattress business will grow more in the future. Sleepwell is a good meeting point for our industry, as machine manufacturers, felt producers, foam makers, fabric producers, etc. I thank you all for your special positioning of the fair event.

Aydin Textile Berhan Kaya Sales Manager I have been among this family for five years. This is our second participation in Sleepwell Expo. Aziz Tekstil Mustafa Atasever General Manager We produce in Adana. We started first with the production of raw materials for the industry. We were supplying raw material for felt companies, buying excess by-products of textile producers. This is our first participation in this fair. We are satisfied about the results. Next year we also will be here. We have to prepare more effectively for this event. Size of our stand may be smaller. Out of this, every thing was good. I thank all the people.

Bedcovers Duygu Gunaydin Assistant General Manager We are from Ankara, where we produce home textiles, mostly bedspreads and other products for quilts, pillows and bedcovers. This is our first participation in Sleepwell Expo. We came here with great enthusiasm and high hopes. Actually, we found what we have expected and were happy about our visitors. We met with our consumers. Mattress industry keeps growing and it will do so more. In this age, people are tired even more both physically and emotionally and need more for rest. People have begun to be interested in mattress selections more and try to find best product. In five or ten year ahead Sleepwell Expo will expand more. We thank everybody who contributed to the event.

Bor-Sa Malzemecilik Mustafa Tapik We have been the two earlier editions of this fair both as visitors and participants. There were some deficiencies for us, because furniture industry is now experiencing a slight recession. As for the fair, it is perfect in terms of concept that focused on sleep industry. We hope that it will be a good event for other participants. And it will keep growing in the future.
Umarım her sene devam eder. Bütün katılımcılar için umarım fuar güzel geçmiştir. Herkese teşekkür ederim.

Boycelik Feridun Tosun Export Manager We are so happy with the fair. I can proudly say that we, as Boycelik, have been a part of it since 2014. First days of the fairs are important. At the first day of the fair we had talks with about 40 companies, 15 of them are new for us. We have visitors from several countries of the world especially both from Europe and Middle East. We divided our customer profile into two. One group is present customers and who put orders during fair. The second group is new ones. Any company who wants to produce mattress is able to find what it needs for production from still wires up to machinery. Our satisfaction about this fair is paramount and eager to support it for next editions with all what we can do. We believe that both visitors and companies in the Sleepwell Expo fair will continue to grow in the years ahead. I think that this fair will be a real competition for Interzum in about five years.
Biz fuardan gayet memnunuz. 2014 yılından beri Boyçelik olarak bu fuara katılıyoruz. Biz genelinden memnunuz.

Boyteks Mustafa Yildirim General Manager First of all we wish that the fair is to be
beneficial for all parties. We are experiencing a fruitful event. We thank to the organizing firm, Voli Fairs Organization, and its staff who work hard to serve us, the participants. Wish them to be more successful in the next editions of the fair. At the beginning we consider that it may be poorer than before due to the problems of recent developments in the country. However, we experienced the opposite. We saw serious number of visitors coming from both Middle East and from Europe. It seems that the year 2017 may be harder. But, the mattress industry is durable to short term crises because mattress is a basic need for humans. We completed our investments that we planned for the year 2016. We hope that the year 2017 will be a better year for our industry. Again we thank you all for your services and hospitality.
Bunlar memnun edici. Fakat biliyorsunuz her geçen yıl fuarların karakterleri değişebiliyor.
Boyteks Dr. Gokmen Kara Mattress-Ticking Fabric Marketing Director First of all we thank you and your organization for having us in this valuable event. We have been slightly worried about the negative effects of the events that we have been experiencing recently in and out of the country. But, fortunately, we observed that companies came here with high hopes and showed great interest to the fair. They all make us happy. As it is known, the characteristic of the fairs may change year after year. We had talks with companies on our investments and plans. Fair runs well. We observe a growing trend when compared to the figures of earlier years. There are more visitors. There may be more participants, though. Some of the firms, who were among us last year, did not show up this year. The alternative fair event held in the country may one of the reasons for this fall. We as Boyteks, will not participate to that fair. Focusing is important for sectoral fairs. Earlier there was no fair specific for fabrics for mattress and bedding components. This fair meets our needs, completely. We are doing our best to improve the position of our industry. We hope that next year there will be more companies and visitors in this fair. We thank to all participants and visitors. We wish that the year 2017 will be a year that all our hopes and expectations are met.

D-Label Uzeyir Ozcan Export Manager We produce labels for the mattress industry. Besides, we supply catalogues, brochures, promotional materials that address to the mattress industry. This is our third participation. We believe that this event should be supported by us and by every party. We also are a part of this industry. Hope that it well be better then before.

Electrotex Osman Guler Board Chairman The most important thing to say is that, both fairs were held at the same time, was a problem for us. Both our customers and we have to be divided in between. We have all supported and keep supporting to Sleepwell Expo. We believed in the positioning and success of the fair, that it would open new opportunities when we decided to participate in its first inception. I hope that following editions will be more efficient. I thank all the people.

Ergofoam Malik Enes Huroglu Domestic and Export Specialist Manager We are the first and the only supplier of gelled products that can be applied to all models and quality levels. Gel products attract the interest of the visitors as well. Customers could find us here in the fair. This year the fair has started fast. There is growing number of foreign visitors. We have been deals with customers in 13 countries. America is our target market for this fair. By now, the fair runs well and we are happy with results. Due to recent problems in the world and in Turkey in terms of economic, political and psychological fields, there is less participation in the fair than the year before. However, it will be higher next year..

Form Sunger Arif Emre Olmeztoprak Sales & Marketing Manager The fair was good for us. There were more visitors on the second and third day of the show. We observed stagnancy in general. I believe this had several reasons. The event brought professionals of the sector together. To me, this was the most important feature of the fair.

Giz Group Eser Karakaslar Board Member Sleepwell Expo is now being organized for the third time. I know that this fair is a valuable event, because it is the first in its field. There is no other fair, addressing exactly to our needs. It is the most efficient fair for us, the mattress producers, because it focuses on only mattress industry. We have been participating in the fair for three years and we will participate in the future. I thank you all the people for every thing you provided.

Gunteks Mehmet Erdem Kurt Export Manager In general, the fair is better than we expected. The organization is growing year after year. Despite all the problems that have been experiencing recently as a whole nation there are more qualified visitors in the fair. They came from Europe, North Africa and other regions. We establish new business contacts and met with new buyers and customers. The fair will be more effective in its next editions. Thanks for everybody.

Helal Group Caner Cinar Business Development and Marketing Manager First of all I want to thank for all the services provided us in this fair. I came here and I heartily felt the sincere atmosphere here in the venue. We are an Iraqi company. I personally assumed the responsibility as marketing and business development manager responsible for Turkey and Jordan. This is our first participation in this fair. We decided to participate in after having praising comments about latest edition of the fair. The fair has proved its success by attracting more visitors from abroad. I hope promising returns from the fair. Hope that we will be here again next year. I thank for all you have done for us.

Huzur Materials Emre Gunes Purchase Specialist I wish good results for both participants and companies. We have expectations about Sleepwell Expo. I hope that it is good for everybody. We are a company that supplies materials used in beds and mattresses. We want that this fair should expand more in the future. Most visitors are coming from European region. We are happy about this. Mattress industry is growing steadily with new technologies. The location of the fair is ideal. So, people from all over the world can come to visit and it will grow more in the future. Thank you all.

Innova Bedding Onder Honi Owner We are here this year as well. This is my third presence in this fair. I witness a growing interest and recognition in the fair year after year. Not much visitor loss is experienced despite all adverse developments in and out of the country. Mattress industry in Turkey has a long way to go. I personally relate the potential in the sector to several authorities at every occasion. I want to be active in the efforts to divide the mattress industry from furniture sector.

Kirayteks Onur Kirayoglu Board Member We are one of the companies who participated in the first edition of this fair. We have high hopes about this event. Second edition of it was better than the first. Some of the effects caused by global economic and political and economic outlook in the country were felt this year. This was also true in all fairs that we visited. However, visitors were more professional than before. There seems to be more active by the weekend. It will be good, I hope. Since the Sleepwell is the first and only fair, it will keep its growth in next years. More promotion and more participants are always needed.
Bu fuara ilk yılından itibaren katılan, tabiri caizse elini taşın altına sokan markalardan birisiyiz. Umudumuz var bu fuarla ilgili. Geçen seneki fuar, ilk seneki fuara nazaran iyiydi.

Kucukler Textile Hasan Kucuk Board Chairman The fair that we participate in for the second time as Comfytex, was good this year. Visitor numbers, especially those who came from abroad were higher than our expectations. There were visitors from almost every country, actually from 20 countries in the fair. Last year the fair was more crowded. The reason is that the events that we have been experiencing nationally may cause this. We are happy and satisfied with the fair. Next year we also be here. We participated in Intermob fair this year. But, I already informed the organizers of Intermob that I will not participate in their fair. This (Sleepwell Expo) is our event, because we target more business in export markets. This fair serves this exactly. Is a good opportunity for us. I thank all other participants and all the people who put their efforts in.

Mechanism World Mehmet Pucak Owner In terms of foreign visitors, interest in the fair was more than expected, though there was less number of visitors from domestic market. Our products are semi-finished products addressing to the patient attendants, not mattresses. However, standing along the mattress companies helped us to find more business. We expect more participants and visitors in the next edition of the event. I think more investment is needed. I thank you all.

Merpol Enes Sumer Board Member This is our first experience in this fair. Earlier we were here only as visitors. Since we are interested especially in foreign customers, the fair was a success for us. We were happy with the visits of foreign visitors to our booth. As a participant in this fair, I can say that we, as companies in mattress business in Turkey, are standing at a good position in the world. There is dense interest in the fair. I believe that it will be expanded more In its next editions. I thank all the people.

Mert Makine Mustafa Nabi Dogan Member of the Board Held as the third edition this year, the number of visitors and participation to the fair is growing steadily. Productivity of the customers is more important for us than the number of customers. In this regard the fair runs very well and very productive. Number of companies and visitors are good. Visitor interests are high and we are happy for this. There are fairs in America and in Germany attracting great number of visitors. We also have to improve the number of visitors up to the levels of fairs held in abroad. Fair in Germany have been held since 1930, a deep-rooted event. We are happy that we now are comparing the Sleepwell Expo with these famous fairs. Our’s is only three years old, however, it has great potential for the coming years. It will be the best fair in its field. I hope that every one investing in this fair will be profitable and beneficial. Thanks for everybody for their contributions.

Milkay Oguz Ozev Sales Manager The fair is magnificent, as a result of the efforts of the organization staff as it was in last year. We invited all our customers to visit the fair. We all have managed it successfully. The first fair on mattresses Sleepwell, though it was three years old, is so successful. This makes up hopeful for the future. We, the Turks can manage it. We make this the only fair an international event. Having it be enlarged and reaching to more companies in the future requires some more time and efforts. We want to do more. We want to attract more visitors from foreign countries. The interest that mattress-manufacturing companies have shown to the fair is rising higher and higher. This will be a major motive for both fair organization and for companies. We are happy more this year, because the profile of visitors is expanding to cover new segments. Thank you all for everything.

Mitsan Mustafa Cetinbulut Board Member We have had some reservations due to the recent events. There may be fewer visitors. But, fortunately, we experienced the opposite. There were fewer numbers from domestic market but more visitors especially from foreign countries. It seems that there is a need for more promotional activity to attract national visitors. Hope that next year they will be more. It was good to meet with new names in the industry. We expect more business with them. I thank you all who serve in Bu yıl yaşanan olaylardan dolayı bazı endişelerimiz vardı. the event.

Nertex Said Erdogan General Manager Really qualified and professional people came to the fair. We have done good talks and deals with them. We will participate next year as well. It is good that the event is special for only mattress industry. Customers in the fair were also happy about this positioning. I thank all the people. Nova Foam and Spring Mustafa Taka Board Chairman We participate in Sleepwell Expo for the second time. This edition was also highly efficient and effective for us. We met with new customers from 35 countries. We established fruitful contacts. We have experienced a fair full of hopes. There were more new participants in the fair area. We are also happy that almost all our customers and the people to whom we sent invitations to the fair accepted and were present in the fair. We talked with them about our present business plans. We are hopeful for the success of the fair. We thank you all for everything.

Ozka Machinery Esra Ozkan Assistant General Manager We have been making machines for the sleep industry including the ones for pillow and filling, machines for silicon openers, and silicon beads and bag filling machinery, since 2003. Besides these, I own a private workshop where we do works on pillows. This is our second time in this fair. This year was better then the first experience and we satisfied more. There are lots of sales and orders during fair. There were great interest from foreign customers coming from Arab countries, including Egypt, Palestine and Morocco. I thank you for all.

Ruba Group Oguzhan Oguz General Manager The fair is good for us in general. Last year there were more visitors. But, it is more important that the visitors coming here this time were more professional, more knowledgeable and more interested in doing business. Actually, we do not like crowded fair events, because people could not find time to get into contact for deeper talks. Here, now we see people who are focused on their customers, their needs and their buying powers. We want that the fair should be promoted more forcefully for the betterment of its next editions. It is more important having more qualified visitors than the number of halls or sections organized. Thanks for your all efforts you have done for us.

Pakipek Group Ugur Bukumcu Board Member We participated in the fair jointly with Pakipek Textile as Rahat Yaslan brand, as one of the oldest firms in Bursa. We started recently to sell pillows in our two stores in Bursa and online channel. We try to expand our brand. The fair was successful for us. We met with new buyers. We like the profile of buyers and visitors. We plan to be here next year. We hope that other companies are also satisfied. We thank for all the things you done.
Sefox Ramazan Celik Owner We wish all the best for our fair and for our country. Developments are good and fast. We are honored to be here. There is enough participation from abroad. It is a good opportunity for the expansion of the market. The mattress market is still growing and demand for high quality mattresses is rising. Our country is located in a strategic spot in the world and has major share in the international market. Focusing on a specific field is one of the major advantages of the fair. Also, participants in the fair have professional approach to mattress business. Our partners and others in the industry visit to other fairs and they express their problems finding a suitable position for their products in general purpose fairs. In short, Sleepwell Expo will be highly beneficial for the mattress industry.
Kaliteli yataklara rağbet her geçen gün artıyor.

Vera Abdullah Umit Canan Foreign Trade Executive We have been serving in the mattress industry for five years. Headquartered in Kayseri, we provide components for the mattress industry both in Turkey and in the world. We have been following this fair since its first inception. Once, we have observed that there are mostly Turkish participants when we visited in the fairs held in abroad. Then we think about the need for similar events in Turkey. Finally, the Sleepwell Expo Fair has been born as a right decision. The reason is that, buyers know Istanbul come here well and easily. The venue of the Expo is also important; it is in close proximity to the airport. Besides, Turkey is a great market for mattresses and it has a say in the world’s mattress industry. I hope and wish that this fair would grow more in the future. It is good that machinery producers are also here in this fair. There are visitors who consider to invest in mattress industry and to buy machinery for production. Presences of other suppliers of the mattress industry in the fair are also good for them. We introduce new concepts in the fair. This year we focused on pillow covers. Both participating companies and visitor profiles are in good match. This improves our performance in the event, like hitting bull’s eye. We even got new contracts during the fair. Thanks for every body who realized this event.

Memory foam industry, strong and vibrant SURVEY
Turkey’s mattress industry has grown fast especially in last decade. From mattress ticking fabrics to springs and foams, from mattress machinery to chemicals the industry has been continuing its revolutionary trends. The sector has international award-winning compounds and worldwide competitive manufacturing lines. The industry has a worldwide reputation in innerspring mattresses and has a lot to say in the memory foam industry especially in the last 5-6 years.
What is memory foam? First designed in the mid-1960s for NASA airplane seats to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. Ames scientist Chiharu Kubokawa and Charles A. Yost of the Stencel Aero Engineering Corporation were major contributors to this project. The temperature-sensitive
memory foam was initially referred to as “slow spring back foam”; Yost called it “temper foam”. Memory foam is made from a substance called viscoelastic. It is polyurethane with additional chemicals increasing its viscosity and density. It is often referred to as “viscoelastic” polyurethane foam, or low-resilience polyurethane foam. Higher-density memory foam softens in reaction to body heat, allowing it to mold to a warm body in a few minutes. Faster speed of recovery of foam to its original shape after a weight is removed is sometimes
claimed as an advantage by memory-foam mattress producers, who may talk of “newer generation” foams with “faster recovery.” It is both highly energy absorbent and soft. Memory foam mattresses offer a few differences from standard mattresses, and should be considered as an option when you explore options to find the best mattress to meet your sleep needs. What is memory at humans? The ability of a human brain to store memories and then recall them at a moment’s notice is one of the most remarkable capabilities of
109
the human body. It gives us the ability to recall critical skills for survival, meaningful life moments, and both positive and negative experiences that guide our daily lives and shape our perspectives. Many discoveries in our lives have been made by imitating the humans’ or animals’ functions, organs, abilities or systems. As technological advances continue to revolutionize the way humans function, a great deal of scientific research has focused on finding ways to produce products that replicate aspects of the human memory to enhance our daily lives; one of which is the discovery of smarter sleep surfaces. Although initially the cost of memory foam material was very expensive, advances in its production have reduced the cost, making it more affordable for widespread use. And, one of the most common products boasting the benefit of this material is the mattress business.
Among the many features of memory foam, its high-density foam composition is both highly soft and energy absorbent, making it an ideal surface for sleeping. Memory foam molds to the body in response to heat and pressure, evenly distributing body weight. It then returns to its original shape once you remove the pressure. In addition to protecting against impact, these properties make memory foam very comfortable.
What are the benefits of memory foam? Memory foam mattresses are made of memory foam as materials with the features of reducing pressure, slow spring-back effect, temperature sensitiveness, breathability, antibiosis and anti-mite effect. The mattresses can effectively reduce body pressure and become soft or hard depending on body temperature, which rectifies body shape to naturally
110
touch and support human body. Medical science proved that the mattress could efficaciously relieve aches of skeleton and muscle, helping to cure an unsound cervical vertebra and lumbar vertebra. Besides, it will lower the frequency of snore and turning over, ensuring a deep and better sleep. Some experts say that some sleep technology, such as memory foam, is relatively new, so it hasn’t been well studied. But perhaps one of the more difficult stumbling blocks to testing the health benefits of mattresses such as memory foam is the subjective nature of sleep. It is simply difficult to measure. Sometimes the brain’s electrical activity, measured with an electroencephalogram (EEG), and other findings recorded during a sleep test don’t always match up perfectly with a person’s subjective experience,
111
What are the disadvantages of memory foam? Some experts say that memory foam products may retain body heat, which could make them less comfortable in warm weather. It is not only sensitive to temperature, but it can store heat. Because of that, if you don’t have an air conditioner in hot summer, you had better choose a well breathable memory foam mattress. Some others say, “In our culture, most people can adjust their thermostats or blankets for the appropriate season.” When new, memory foam can produce an odd chemical smell -- a phenomenon called offgassing. To minimize this problem, the Sleep Products Safety Council, a sleep products trade group, recommends airing out the mattress or pad for at least 24 hours before putting sheets on it. If you follow directions, the smell dissipates quickly.
Are memory foam products safe for young children? Using this and similar very soft materials for use in infants’ beds should be consulted with doctors who usually don’t recommend until certain ages. According to Amerisleep quotes: “Many people who have made the crossover from traditional innerspring mattresses to memory foam are enthusiastic about the benefits they have received. Naturally, they want to share their improved sleep experience with their children. But is memory foam appropriate for children? In general, a memory foam mattress is not a good idea for infants and toddlers. However, older children and teens can usually enjoy the benefits of memory foam without any issues or concerns. The
biggest things to consider when addressing this question are the child’s age and size, the memory foam properties, and the mattress properties.”
How economical? Memory foam was initially too expensive for widespread use, but became cheaper in the meantime. Its most common domestic uses are mattresses, pillows, shoes and blankets. It has medical uses, such as wheelchair seat cushions, hospital bed pillows and padding for people suffering long-term pain or postural problems; for example, a memory foam cervical pillow may alleviate chronic neck pain. Its heat-retaining properties may help some pain sufferers who find the added warmth helps to decrease the pain.
The story of a mattress
112
Mattresses may consist of a quilted or similarly fastened case, usually of heavy cloth, that contains hair, straw, cotton, foam rubber, etc., or a framework of metal springs. Mattresses may also be filled with air or water. The word mattress derives from the Arabic matrah, which means “something thrown down” or “place where something is thrown down” and hence “mat, cushion”. During the Crusades Europeans adopted the Arabic method of sleeping on cushions on the floor, and the word materas eventually descended into Middle English through
the Romance languages. Mattresses are usually placed on top of a bed base which may be solid, as in the case of a platform bed, or elastic, e.g. with an upholstered wood and wire box spring or a slatted foundation. Popular in Europe, a divan incorporates both mattress and foundation in a single upholstered, footed unit. Divans have at least one innerspring layer as well as cushioning materials. They may be supplied with a secondary mattress and/or a removable “topper.” Early mattresses contained a variety of
113
natural materials including straw, feathers or horsehair. In the first half of the 20th century, a typical mattress sold in North America had an innerspring core and cotton batting or fiberfill. Modern mattresses usually contain either an inner spring core or materials such as latex, viscoelastic or other flexible polyurethane foams. Other fill components include insulator pads over the coils that prevent the bed’s upholstery layers from cupping down into the innerspring, as well as polyester fiberfill in the bed’s top upholstery layers. In 1899 James Marshall introduced the first individually wrapped pocketed spring coil mattress now commonly known as Marshall coils. Mattresses may also be filled with air or water, or a variety of natural fibers, such as in futons. Kapok is a common mattress material in Southeast Asia, and coirin South Asia. In North America the typical mattress sold today is an innerspring; however there is increasing interest in all-foam beds and so-called hybrid beds, which include both an innerspring and high-end foams such as visco-elastic or latex in the comfort layers. In Europe, polyurethane foam cores and latex cores have long been popular and make up a much larger proportion of the mattresses sold.
Construction
Core
A conventional mattress consists of two primary sections – a core or “support layer” and the upholstery or “comfort layer” – wrapped in a thick fabric called the ticking.
The core of the mattress supports the sleeper’s body. Modern spring mattress cores, often called “innersprings,” are made up of steel coil springs, or “coils.”
Upholstery layers cover the mattress and provide cushioning and comfort. The upholstery layer consists of three parts: the insulator, the middle upholstery, and the quilt.
The gauge of the coils is another factor which determines firmness and support. Coils are measured in quarter increments. The lower the number, the thicker the spring. In general, higher-quality mattress coils have a 14-gauge (1.63 mm) diameter. Coils of 14 to 15.5-gauge (1.63 to 1.37 mm) give more easily under pressure, while a 12.5-gauge (1.94 mm) coil, the thickest typically available, feels quite firm.
Innerspring Innerspring mattresses commonly consist of just the spring core, and the top and bottom upholstery layers.
114
Connections between the coils help the mattress retain its shape. Most coils are connected by interconnecting wires; encased coils are not connected, but the fabric encasement helps preserve the mattress shape. There are four types of mattress coils: •Bonnell coils are the oldest and most common. First adapted from buggy seat springs of the 19th century, they are still prevalent in mid-priced mattresses. Bonnell springs are a knotted, round-top, hourglass-shaped steel wire coil. When laced together with cross wire helicals, these coils form the simplest innerspring unit, also referred to as a Bonnell unit. •Offset coils are an hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helical wires. The hinging effect of the unit is designed to conform to body shape. LFK coils are an unknotted offset coil with a cylindrical or columnar shape. •Continuous coils are innerspring configuration in which the rows of coils are formed from a single piece of wire. They work in a hinging effect similar to that of offset coils. •Marshall coils, also known as wrapped or encased coils or pocket springs, are thin-gauge, barrel-shaped, knotless coils individually encased in fabric pockets—normally a fabric from man-made, nonwoven fiber. Some manufacturers pre-compress these coils, which makes the mattress firmer and allows for motion separation between the sides of the bed. As the springs are not wired together, they work more or less independently: the weight on one spring does not affect its neighbors. More than half the consumers who participated in a survey had
115
chosen to buy pocket spring mattresses.
Upholstery layers Upholstery layers cover the mattress and provide cushioning and comfort. Some manufacturers call the mattress core the “support layer” and the upholstery layer the “comfort layer.” The upholstery layer consists of three parts: the insulator, the middle upholstery, and the quilt. The insulator separates the mattress core from the middle upholstery. It is usually made of fiber or mesh and is intended to keep the middle upholstery in place. The middle upholstery comprises all the material between the insulator and the quilt. It is usually made from materials which are intended to provide comfort to the sleeper, including flexible polyurethane foam (which includes convoluted “egg-crate” foam), visco-elastic foam, latex foam, felt, polyester
fiber, cotton fiber, wool fiber and nonwoven fiber pads. In Europe and North America, mattress makers have begun incorporating gel-infused foams, soft-solid gels layered over foam, and poured gels in the top comfort layer of the bed. The quilt is the top layer of the mattress. Made of light foam or fibers stitched to the underside of the ticking, it provides a soft surface texture to the mattress and can be found in varying degrees of firmness.
Foundation There are three main types of foundation or bed base: •A traditional box spring consists of a rigid frame containing extra heavy-duty springs. This foundation is often paired with an innerspring mattress, as it extends the life of the spring unit at the mattress’s core.
116
•An all-wood foundation usually has seven or eight support slats disposed below paperboard or beaverboard. This foundation, variously called a “no-flex”, “lowflex” or zero-deflection unit, as well as an “ortho box”, provides support similar to a platform foundation. All-wood foundations have become increasingly prevalent as U.S. mattress makers shifted to super-thick, one-sided mattresses. •A grid-top foundation is a combination of steel and wood. Typically the measurements of a foundation will be about 1-2” shorter than the measurement of a mattress.
Mattress ticking fabric Ticking is the protective fabric cover used to encase mattresses and foundations. It is usually designed to coordinate with the foundation border fabric and comes in a wide variety of colors and styles. Mattress fabrics can be knits, damask or printed wovens, or inexpensive nonwovens. During the past decade, along with the rise in popularity of all-foam beds, stretchy knit ticking on the bed’s top panel has become a standard look on both innerspring and foam beds. Most ticking is made with polyester yarns. More expensive mattress fabrics may contain a combination of polyester with rayon, cotton, silk, wool or other natural yarns. Until the early 2000s, beds were normally upholstered with a single fabric. This was usually a damask ticking or, for inexpensive bedsets, a nonwoven fabric covering all surfaces of the mattress and foundation. Today’s bedsets are covered with up to six different fabrics: A better quality circular knit or woven damask on the top panel—the bed’s sleeping surface; a matching or contrasting [usually woven] fabric on the border of the mattress; a matching or contrasting [usually woven] fabric on the foundation
side panels; a ‘non-skid’ woven or non-woven fabric on the surface of the foundation and reverse side of the mattress; and a nonwoven dust cover on the under side of the foundation. Some North American mattress producers are beginning to use furniture upholstery fabrics on the bed’s borders giving beds a more European, home furnishings look.
weights and densities of petrochemical-based flexible polyurethane foams and visco-elastic foams or memory foam, and latex rubber foams. A number of mattress manufacturers have incorporated polyurethane and visco-elastic foams with a portion of plantbased content. All-foam mattresses are often paired with platform bases.
Foam mattress
Latex foam
All-foam mattresses use different
Latex foam in mattresses is gen-
117
erally a blend of the latex of the Hevea brasiliensis tree and synthetic latex, which is derived from petrochemicals and other substances and fillers. There are, however, natural latex mattresses that leave out polyurethane-based chemicals. Latex foam is produced using either the Talalay or the Dunlop process. Each provides a different feel. Dunlop is generally a firmer foam, Talalay is softer. While the Dunlop process produces a denser foam, the Talalay process produces a lighter one that has more air in it. If you were to weigh each as latex cores, the Dunlop foam would be heavier because it has more latex
in it. Talalay is more expensive as its production is more resource intensive. Natural latex foam has a higher latex content than synthetic latex, however, “100% natural latex foam is misleading.
118
Memory foam Memory foam mattresses use conforming visco-elastic foam over firmer polyurethane base foam. Some innerspring mattresses have memory foam in their upholstery layer. Different feels and comfort levels are achieved by varying the thickness, weight and formulation of the visco-elastic foams and the base foams. Latex and memory foam mattresses each provide a unique feel. This type of mattress is good at relieving pressure on painful joints, but is usually more expensive than spring mattresses.
Memory foam is affected by temperature. In a cool bedroom, a memory foam mattress will feel firmer than it does in a warm bedroom. Memory softens and conforms to the sleeper in response to body temperature and body weight. Traditional memory foam molds to the body creating a depression the sleeper must roll out of when changing sleep positions. Mattress manufacturers have responded to this issue by using “faster response” memory foams. They spring back more quickly when the sleeper moves. Foam mattresses are also known to generally
“sleep warmer” than innerspring mattresses. Mattress makers have addressed the issue with “opencell” memory foams, pinhole cored memory foam, gel-infused memory foams, channel-cut foam cores, reticulated foam support layers and other technologies to improve air circulation through all-foam beds.
High Density Foam Similar to memory foam mattresses, a high density foam mattress uses a more compact foam typically made from polyurethane. This kind of foam is made largely from open cells that are packed together tightly. High density foam mattresses offer comfort and longevity because they are more dense than a traditional foam mattress. High density foam mattresses that have an innerspring system last even longer and eliminate mattress sagging.
Bladder mattresses Mattresses can also be made from bladders of some fluid, notably water or air. These date to antiquity – goatskin bladders filled with water were used in Persia at least as early as 3600 BCE – and gained increased popularity in the 20th century with improved manufacturing.
119
Air mattresses Air mattresses use one or more air chambers instead of springs to provide support. Quality and price can range from inexpensive ones used occasionally for camping, to high-end luxury beds. Air mattresses designed for typical bedroom use cost about the same as innerspring mattresses with comparable features. Air bladder construction varies from a simple polyethylene bag to internally baffled, multiple chambers of latex (vulcanized rubber) or vinyl with bonded cotton exteriors. Mattresses may have a layer of foam above the air chambers for added cushioning, and may be enclosed in a cover. Some such beds are termed soft-sided air beds. Permanent use adjustable-firmness “airbeds” became popular particularly after market leader Select Comfort began a major marketing campaign around 2001. The original airbed was manufactured by Comfortaire in 1981, which was later purchased by Select Comfort. There are several other manufacturers. Some allow independent adjustment of each side of the
bed. They are made in a variety of models from basic, no-frills ones that measure about 7” in height, to high-profile, 15” tall hybrids that contain several types of foam, pillow tops, and digital pumps with memory for individual pressure settings. Studies suggest that adjustable-firmness beds are better for back pain. Adjustable-firmness mattresses for medical use have special control mechanisms. In the 1990s self-adjusting airbeds that automatically change their pressure periodically, or inflate and deflate several air chambers alternately, were introduced. The intention of these periodic changes is to reduce problems with decubitus ulcers (bed sores), though as of 2008 the effectiveness of these techniques was still being researched. Air mattresses for camping are available which are filled with foam which itself provides little support, but expands when the air valve is opened allowing air to enter, so the mattress (nearly) inflates by itself. This is especially useful for campers who carry their equipment as, unlike with normal air mattresses, no pump is needed for inflating. Available brands include Aerobed, Coleman, Therm-a-Rest and others. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises consumers not to let infants sleep on air mattresses. This is motivated by reports of deaths, mostly infants younger than 8 months of age, who were
120
placed to sleep on air mattresses, and either suffocated in a face down position on an air mattress or died due to suffocation after falling into gaps between the mattress and bed frame, or the mattress and adjacent furniture or wall.
Waterbeds A waterbed is a mattress with water in its interior instead of metal coils or air. Waterbeds can be lined with different layers of fiber to achieve the level of firmness the user desires. Waterbeds are well known for providing support to the spine and other body parts, similar to the other mattress types. There are several options of support which range up to 100% waveless, where the user does not notice he/ she is laying upon a waterbed.
Quality Many parameters determine mattress quality. Laboratory test methods have been established for some of these parameters, such as pressure distribution, skin microclimate, hygiene, edge support, and long-term stability. Some of these have been developed by Duncan Bain, working on behalf of the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Other parameters, such as firmness, are more specific to the sleeper. In general, firm mattresses are recommended for stomach and some back sleepers, soft mattresses are recommended for side sleepers, and medium mattresses are recommended for the majority of back sleepers. Double mattresses are available with a softer and a firmer part, or with adjustable firmness levels, to accommodate sleepers with different preferences who share a bed.
Ergonomics In 2003, a randomized-controlled trial found that medium-firm mattresses assessed using the Hs
Lifespan
1 year, while a quality latex core can last 20 years or more; innerspring cores typically last around 10 years. The comfort layer is almost invariably the first area to fail, which is why mattresses are often double-sided, to extend the lifespan. A separate topper may be used instead of or in addition to a comfort layer, which reduces wear and is replaceable without replacing the entire mattress.
Mattresses deteriorate over time, and the lifespan of a mattress depends on a variety of factors, notably materials, manufacturing quality, care, and the vigorousness of use. A poor quality foam comfort layer can deteriorate noticeably in
In the United States, mattress warranties are typically for 10 years or 20 years, sometimes 25 years, though this specifically addresses manufacturing defects and faster-than-normal deterioration, not expected deterioration with time.
scale from the European Committee for Standardisation were associated with less pain; this study has been cited by clinical practice guidelines on lower back pain. In 2015, a systematic review of studies concluded that medium-firm, custom-inflated mattresses were best for pain and neutral spinal alignment.
122
In the United States, as of 2008 there is a general expectation that mattresses should last about 10 years, and this is the average number of years Americans keep mattresses, though this varies by age group. This expectation is based on a number of factors, including: sales pitches; the expectation that mattresses will last the length of their warranty, hence 10 years or 20 years, accordingly; and comparison with other household items.
Maintenance and care The main wear problems that can occur with a mattress are sagging, mildew, and staining. These are prevented by proper support, rotation and flipping, keeping it dry, and using a mattress pad or protector. Some symptoms of a broken or worn-out mattress include springs which can be felt poking through the upholstery layer, visible permanent sagging or deformity, lumpiness, and excessive squeaking. Mattresses require a solid foundation which does not itself sag – a sagging foundation, such as by weak slats on a wide bed, will in turn cause the mattress to sag. Consistently sleeping in the same place and body position causes excessive wear, and thus rotating or flipping mattresses is used to reduce this: double-sided mattresses can be alternately flipped width-wise (about the long axis) and length-wise (about the shorter axis), or alternately flipped and rotated; while single-sided mattresses are only rotated, which is simpler but less effective. Flipping/ rotation schedules vary between materials and manufacturers, but typically recommended is monthly for the first six months, and every two or three months thereafter. Foundations should also be rotated, if possible, though less frequently – rotating box springs twice a year is recommended. While sagging is undesirable,

some level of indentation (about 8 cm or 1.5 inches) is natural if natural materials are used in a comfort layer. Excessive wear on mattresses, such as folding and bending, placing heavy objects in one spot, or excess force on the handles, will also cause more rapid deterioration. Care should particularly be taken during transport or storage. Mattresses require ventilation to remain dry and prevent mildew, and thus should not be placed directly on the floor or on a solid surface – slats or a box spring provide space for airflow, while solid wood or plywood (as in cheap bunkie boards) does not. Additional ventilation is recommended for natural materials, in which case leaving the mattress “naked after stripping sheets (for example while laundering) is recommended. If a mattress is allowed to become damp, for example by wet cleaning, mildew may develop inside the upholstery; cleaning with a vacuum cleaner or mild surface cleanser and a slightly damp cloth avoids this. Mattresses absorb fluids and stains readily, notably from nightly sweating (which results in a yellow stain), seminal stains which are darker,[32] menstrual fluids which are dark red,[33] and other bodily fluids in addition to accidental spills. These visibly stain the ticking, and seep through into lower layers. In addition to being unhygienic, hard to launder, and unsightly, such stains typically void a warranty. Thus a mattress protector is suggested to protect the mattress; this can be removed and cleaned separately, and replaced if damaged.
Industry Companies often specialize in a particular type of mattress, such as innerspring, latex, and airbed, although as latex and airbeds have become more popular, they
have become more common. Mattresses which are mostly the same are often sold under different brand names;[35] two of the largest brands, Serta and Simmons, became owned by the same company after a private equity buyout. Simmons, founded in the late 1800s, was bought and sold multiple times and faced bankruptcy after a major decline in the bedding industry in the 2000s. The International Sleep Products Association was originally founded in 1915 and releases a report on U.S. mattress sales. Another association, Specialty Sleep Association, represents companies such as Innomax and Boyd Specialty focused on latex, waterbeds, and airbeds. However, Select Comfort, which produces airbeds (a specialty bed), is a member of the ISPA.
In 2012, Sealy Corporation, founded in 1881, was purchased by Tempur-Pedic, which had introduced an all foam (TEMPUR-Material) brand into the United States in 1992. Another large company, Spring Air, went bankrupt in 2009 and was purchased by one of its former executives. Comfortaire, founded in 1981, was the first to specialize in airbeds. It was later bought by Select Comfort. Adjustable beds have become a trend and are more compatible with certain types of mattresses such as latex or memory foam. These are particularly popular in Europe, and for one business accounted for 25% of beds in Sweden in 2010 and 70% of beds in the Netherlands.

Companies innovate to demonstrate how cotton can bring colors to cotton
Reinach, Switzerland - Cotton Incorporated, the research and promotion company for cotton, and Archroma, a global leader in color and specialty chemicals, have collaborated to present what they believe is the first ever dye derived from cotton plant residues. Cotton Incorporated approached Archroma and challenged them to develop a dye option that may represent the first opportunity in modern textile history to develop and color a fabric using a single plant source. EarthColors is Archro-
ma’s innovative method of creating dyes in warm, ternary shades from nature. The patented technology addresses two key concerns of the textile industry: sustainability and traceability. These sulfur-based dyes are designed for use on cellulosic fibers, such as cotton. While most dyes in the textile industry are synthetic, using petrochemicals (oil) as a base, EarthColors is a biosynthetic alternative that utilizes natural waste from the agricultural

or herbal industry. “As soon as we heard about the EarthColors technology, we wanted to explore the possibilities of cotton as a natural dye source,” says Mary Ankeny, Senior Director Textile Chemistry Research at Cotton Incorporated, who led the project from the Cotton Incorporated side. “Byproducts of cotton harvesting and ginning have been utilized within the food and construction industries for decades, but we were intrigued by the idea of using cotton biomass to dye cotton fiber.” challenge. Archroma strives to challenge the status quo, and our EarthColors technology demonstrates our dedication to support and inspire sustainable fashion with warm colors that can be traced from the field to the shop,” says Nuria Estape, Head of Textile Specialties Global Marketing & Promotion, at Archroma.
a bale identification tag. The tag allows cotton businesses to trace the journey of the bale as far back as the facility where the cotton was ginned. The tag also includes information on the fiber characteristics for the cotton contained in the bale, which allows for efficient inventory management by merchants and mills.
Dyeing a natural fiber with dye processed with natural ingredients has appeal for many environmentally-conscious brands, a niche Archroma aimed to fill with the launch of the line in 2014.
Indeed, each batch of EarthColors dye offers a high level of traceability in the form of a hangtag with a Near Field Communication chip. Data on the chip, which can be accessed by Archroma customers and even consumers through a smart phone, explains the manufacturing process of the dye and where the natural materials were sourced.

Cotton Incorporated presented fabric samples dyed with the EarthColors cotton-derived dye at the Premiere Vision trade fair taking place in Paris, France, September 12 through 14. The knit and woven constructions, produced at Cotton Incorporated’s laboratories and at the Cone White Oak facility, demonstrate the range of brown hues that be achieved using 100% cotton biomass as the source.
There is an ample supply of cotton biomass. The global volume of cotton harvesting and ginning byproducts – which includes burs, stems, immature bolls, lint, sticks, and leaves – can be as much as three million tons per year. One 480 lb. bale of cotton, for example, can produce 150-200 lbs. of usable byproducts. Archroma’s EarthColors application on cotton byproducts marks the first time the cotton plant has been used to actually dye cotton fabrics.

Trevira fill fibers for bedding
Trevira Bioactive fabrics for the home textiles sector are used in bedding, curtains and drapes, upholstery fabrics and fill materials for pillows and duvets.
135
The antimicrobial properties make Trevira Bioactive an ideal basis for household textiles such as hand cloths and towels.
Home and contract textiles in Trevira Bioactive
Bedding is one of only a few textiles where the body is so very conscious of the feel of the material. The quality of pillows and duvets is a decisive factor in determining the sleep climate, and therefore our sense of well-being daily. The materials are in direct contact with the skin - making what they have inside them a matter of some importance. Fill materials in Trevira are dedicated 100% to ensuring healthy and comfortable sleep. They are breathable, their bulk creates volume and the air protects against the cold while retaining the warmth.
Trevira Fill - the light hollow fiber Each Trevira hollow fiber has a fine air channel running through it. This makes it light - 10, 000 meters of Trevira Fill weigh only 6 grams - at the same time enabling it to achieve 15 % higher bulk volume than normal fill fibers. This results in ideal moisture conductance and very good air circulation. Easy care The very good wash behavior of
Trevira Fill assists the healthy cleanliness. The fibers meet the highest demands in terms of hygiene. They are totally washable and to some extent can be boiled as well, and they can also go in the spin and tumbler dryer.
Permanently antimicrobial Trevira fibers in the Trevira Bioactive variant contain an additional additive with antimicrobial properties. The agent is firmly and indelibly integrated in the fiber polymer and remains unaffected either by washing or usage. Trevira Bioactive is always ideal where particular importance is attached to cleanliness. The antimicrobial function prevents the growth of bacteria in and on textiles where microorganisms often find an ideal climate, due to the warmth and damp. The antimicrobial agent cannot migrate into the environment, so that the natural skin flora is not affected. In its textile characteristics Trevira Fill Bioactive has all the advantages of normal Trevira Fill fibers.
Trevira Bioactive is always at home where a healthy living climate is of importance. Due to the moistness and warmth bacteria often find ideal conditions for growth in bedding and household textiles. It is a fact that these textiles are used for long periods and without daily cleaning. With its permanent antimicrobial effect in and on the fiber Trevira Bioactive offers an important additional function for home and contract textiles. It combats the spread of bacteria in and on the fiber, meaning that textiles stay fresh for longer. In a permanently flame retardant version the antimicrobial fibers and yarns offer the ideal basis for safety textiles with extra functionality.

Metal frames are sometimes known as a “Hollywood frame. Bedsprings: Open-spring or wire fabric box springs without uphol-
139
stery materials or cover. Binding tape: Fabric tape used to bind and close the mattress or foundation where the vertical and horizontal panels of outer ticking come together, providing the edge trimming for the mattress or foundation. See Tape and Tape Edge. Body impressions: Indentations occurring on the surface of a mattress over time, due to the compression of materials by the human body. Bonnell: A knotted, round-top, hourglass-shaped steel wire coil. When laced together with crosswire helicals, these coils form the simplest innerspring unit, also referred to as a Bonnell. Border: The vertical side or edge of a mattress or foundation. Prebuilt borders are constructed by stitching together the ticking, foam or other filling materials and a backing material. Commonly quilted or vertical-stitched. Border rod: A heavy gauge wire rod attached to the perimeter of the innerspring unit (top and bot-
tom) by means of a helical wire or metal clips. Boric acid: A chemical additive applied during the garnetting of cotton and/or other fibers to provide cigarette ignition resistance characteristics. Box spring: Also referred to as a “foundation.” A base for an innerspring mattress, consisting of coils or other forms of springs mounted on a wood or metal frame and secured with a wire-interlaced or welded-wire grid, topped with upholstery and insulating materials (felt, urethane or other resilient materials), and covered on the top and sides with ticking and on the bottom with a dust cover. It is an important part of a bed set since it serves as a shock absorber, distributes weight, and supports and interacts with the innerspring mattress to properly support the body. Box-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised surface finishing treatment where a separate, sided and rectangular encasement of
soft materials–usually with a tape edge–is attached via a welt to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Bunk bed: A two-tiered wood or metal frame designed to accommodate two mattresses, typically twin-size, one above the other. Some models allow the upper and lower units to be detached and used as separate beds. Bunkie: A mattress, usually twinsize, and platform base used on bunk beds. Cal 117: Refers to California Technical Bulletin 117, which specifies a vertical flame testing procedure for bedding and furniture component materials. Foam referred to as “Cal 117 foam” has passed this test. Carbon: The principal hardening element in steel. The higher the carbon content, the harder the metal and the more temper it will take, thus giving longer “memory.” Cellulose acetate pad: Woody fiber compacted into a pad and used as an insulator. May be glued or
140
sandwiched between plastic netting to help hold it together. Coil count: The number of coils in an innerspring unit. Though the count can effect weight distribution, it is not the determining factor for firmness. The count is usually based on the number of coils in a full-size unit. Coils: The individual wire springs that form an innerspring unit. See Hourglass, Continuous and Offset Coils. Coir pad: An insulator pad made from coconut husk fiber, garnetted, needled, bonded and pre-cut to size. Comfort system: Refers to the upholstery layers of the mattress, generally consisting of a combination of materials (cover, cushioning, topper pad, insulators, etc.). Conjugate polyester fiber: Spirally crimped fiber that is crimped chemically rather than thermally. Is very durable and resilient. Continuous coils: An innerspring configuration in which the rows of coils are formed from a single piece of wire. Conventional bedding products: Mattresses and foundations in the conventional adult sizes of twin, twin extra long, full, full extra long, queen and king. Convertible sofa: A sofa with a bed folded beneath the seating surface, generally consisting of a mattress resting on a metal mechanism. Also called “sleep sofa” or “sofa sleeper.” Convoluted foam: Better known as “egg-crate” foam that is specially cut to produce hills and valleys, giving gentle softness and more surface comfort. Foam surface treatment is available in multiple
patterns. Cornell test: Devised by Cornell University School of Hotel/Motel Administration. Designed to test cosmetic performance of bedding sets, such as body impression or support firmness. Two round surfaces are pounded into the finished product 100,000 times and checked periodically for failure or changes. Corner guards: Molded plastic or metal, (sometimes upholstered) fittings secured to foundation corners to prevent material damage from the bed frame. Cotton felt: Produced by a garnett machine which combs cotton and other fiber binders into a continuous web or layer. Several such layers combined are called cotton “batt”. For compressed cotton felt, thick layers of garnetted cotton fiber are mechanically compressed to reduce body impressions. Cotton linters: The short fibers adhering to the seed after the long staple fiber has been removed in the ginning process. Used in making cotton felt. Cotton pickers: “Fall out” from ginning or garnetting. These shorter staple cotton fibers are blended with linters to produce cotton felt. Crown: A convex surface on a mattress. Mattresses with a half-inch crown are a half-inch thicker at the center than at the edges. Cushioning: Materials that lie above the insulator and below the fabric covering in an innerspring mattress. These materials are typically combinations of polyurethane foam, cotton felt, and/or mademade fibers. Damask: Woven ticking produced on a loom that has yarns running at 90-degree angles to each other, the warp and the weft. The damask
design is woven into the fabric rather than printed on the surface. Density: A measure of weight per cubic volume, usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Often referred to when discussing foam. Double tempering: Heating of wire components, usually in an oven, after they have been given shape or form and have been electronically stress-relieved. Refers to tempering coils as well as border rods and helicals in a complete spring unit. Dual-purpose: A broad term used to include all sleep pieces, which can be converted to other uses, including: convertible sofas, high-risers, daybeds, futons, etc. See Convertible Sofa. Dust cover: A woven or non-woven fabric attached to the underside of a foundation to prevent the collection of dust inside. May also be known as “sheeting” or “cambric.” Edge guard: Generally an extra component added to the edge of a mattress and/or box spring to give support on the sides. Engineered edge support: A special design where the coils on the outer edge of an innerspring unit are actually positioned under the border rod. Most units have the coils recessed from the edge, which can contribute to a “roll out of bed” feeling. Euro-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised, squared-off surface finishing treatment filled with soft comfort layers and attached to the mattress upholstery at the tapeedge. Fabric cover: Cloth or textile material woven, knitted or felted of any fiber or mixture of fibers. Often referred to as “ticking” or mattress fabric.
141
Fales pad: Compressed cotton felt that is stitched together to better retain compression. Fiber pad: Usually refers to manmade or natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.) that are garnetted, needled, carded and/or bonded together. Often used in quilting panels for mattress tops. Filler cloth: Refers to a plain fabric used on the top of a foundation instead of ticking. Commonly offers non-skid characteristics. Flanging: The process whereby a strip of fabric is sewn to the edge of the mattress cover and, in the assembly process, secured to the perimeter of the innerspring unit to prevent the cover and filling materials from shifting. Foam foundation: Consists of a built-up wood slat frame covered with a sheet of cardboard or similar material, topped with at least 2” of foam and covered with ticking.
Foundation: Any base or support for a mattress, sometimes used as a generic term for box spring. A foundation may be made entirely of wood or a combination of wood and steel or steel springs. See Box Spring and Foam Foundation. Futon: A Japanese-style mattress construction, consisting of a cover and filling material, which is typically cotton but can be innerspring and/or foam. Garnetting: A mechanical process whereby short cotton fibers and/ or other fibers are combed into a specific orientation and formed into a thin web, which are then layered to create a batting used as an upholstery material. See Cotton Felt. Gauge, coil: A measurement of the diameter of the steel wire used in coil construction. Wire gauge for innerspring coils range from 12.5 to 17. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. Gel foam: Generally a visco-elastic
foam that is infused with beads or swirls of gel during the foam pouring process. Hair pads: Horse tail or mane, cattle tail or hog hair, which has been processed and curled for use as a mattress or upholstery filler. Hammocking: An undesirable characteristic sometimes associated with worn out or low-end mattresses. When weight is placed in the center, the corners tend to rise and bow in response to deep compression much like a hammock. Terms “dish” and “sagging” also used to describe this phenomenon. Hand: Term used to describe the touch or feel of fabrics (e.g., soft, smooth, etc.). Hand-tied: The process of hand-lacing the coils in a box spring together with twine. Seldom used, this process has been replaced with modern technology and new designs.
142
Headboard: An upright unit of wood, metal, plastic, or upholstered material, to be attached at the head of a bed, usually with the bed frame. Helical: A tightly-coiled, elongated wire used in the manufacture of innerspring units to join individual coils to each other and to the border rod. High-contour mattress: Measures 9” – 13” thick. A mattress under 9” thick is considered “standard”; over 13” thick is considered “custom.” High riser: Usually a frame or sofa with two mattresses of equal size without a backrest. The frame slides out with the lower bed and rises to form a full bed or two single beds. Hog ring: Metal ring used to secure the insulator and flange material to the innerspring unit. Takes its name from its similarity to the metal ring in a hog’s nose. Hourglass coils: Coils that taper inward from top to middle and outward from middle to bottom, thus resembling an hourglass in shape. Employed in bonnell and offset coil
designs. Hybrid: Commonly used industry term for a mattress that combines an innerspring unit with specialty foams such as visco-elastic or latex.
knitting process (tricot) rather than weaving. Designs are printed onto the surface. Lacing wire: Finer gauges of wire used to form helicals.
Ideal weight distribution: Equalization of support in such a way as to eliminate pressure points that cause discomfort resulting in tossing and turning. Best achieved with coil on coil construction and properly designed insulation and cushioning material.
Latex: A flexible foam created from a water dispersion of rubber, either from the rubber tree (natural latex) or a man-made, petroleum-based product (synthetic latex). Most latex used in mattresses today is a combination of natural and synthetic latex rubber.
Innerspring unit construction (for mattresses): The spring construction used as the main support system inside an innerspring mattress. Some common types are: pocketed (see Marshall) and all metal (i.e., bonnell, offset and continuous wire).
LFK: An unknotted offset coil with a cylindrical or columnar shape.
Insulator: Any material used on top and bottom of an innerspring unit to prevent the upholstery layers from cupping down into the coils. Some common types are: a fiber pad, non-woven fabric, netting, wire mesh or foam pad. Knit: A basic polyester or nylon ticking fabric produced through a
Link fabric: A wire foundation for bedsprings, cots, studio couches, sofabed mechanisms and gliders. So called because the fabric is a succession of metal links. Marshall: A type of innerspring construction in which thin gauge, barrel-shaped, knotless coils are encased in fabric pockets. Also known as “pocketed coils.” Mattress: A manufactured product to sleep on, consisting of various resilient materials covered with an outer ticking. Comes from the Arabic term “matrah” meaning to throw
143
down. Early Arabs traveled with their bedding and threw it down on the ground or floor at night. Memory: The ability of tempered steel, foam or some fabrics to return to their original state after being compressed or stretched. Mesh: Plastic netting generally stretched across the face of an innerspring unit as an insulator. Microcoils: A low-profile metal spring unit, typically with individually wrapped coils, used in the top comfort layers of a mattress. Molded foam core (for mattresses): A core made of flexible foam is made in molds and used as the main support system in a foam mattress.
construction fabrics are produced. These fabrics are produced by garnetting fibers, entangling or inner-locking these fibers together by a series of needles and then mechanically bonding or fusing them together via heat to produce a fabric without glue or binders. Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing process used to produce insulator pads and non-woven fabrics whereby loose, garnetted fibers are inner-locked by a series of “needles.” This process usually requires additional bonding to keep the fibers in place.
Mounting: Attachment of a box spring unit to a wood or metal frame.
Offset coils: An hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helicals.
Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing process for which high strength, lightweight, non-woven
Orthopedic: Generalized term to imply set gives proper postural alignment and support. Should not
necessarily mean hard or board feeling. Proper support with a degree of comfort to contour to the body is best. Panel: The part of the ticking that constitutes the top sleep surface of a mattress, as well as the bottom of a mattress on a two-sided bed. Pedestal-type metal or wood bed frame: A low-profile bed frame with a solid pedestal base underneath each side of the frame, instead of legs. Pillow-top mattress: A mattress featuring a surface finishing treatment where a separate encasement of soft materials is attached to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Plus 4 edge: Two border rods engineered with one inside of the other and designed so that they make the edge 4% firmer than the balance of the sleep surface to eliminate that “roll out of bed” feeling and edge sag.
144
Straightline deflection: Pertains to mattress innerspring construction and refers to the constant ratio between stress and strain, weight and movement. The benefit is that constant support is provided regardless of the weight applied. No bottoming out of soft spots. Basically it means that two people of unequal weight, sleeping on the same mattress, receive the same support.
Pocketed coil: See Marshall. Polyurethane foam: See Urethane Foam. Print: A ticking fabric, which can be a woven or non-woven sheeting, commonly of synthetic fiber composition, on which a design has been printed. Quilting: The surface treatment in which the cover, foam and/or other fibers are sewn together, using various stitch patterns on quilting machinery, including scroll or panel quilters (single needle) and multi-needle quilters.
Stretch knit: A heavy-weight mattress ticking consisting of a top layer, bottom layer and filling material knitted together and intermittently stitched to keep the filling yarns stable.
Resilience: Surface liveliness and spring-back ability. Rollator test: An approximately 230 lb., six-sided roller is passed across a sleep set to determine the structural strengths or weaknesses of the set and components (i.e., foam or quilt failure, breaking of helicals and coils). The industry standard to duplicate the life of a mattress is 100,000 passes. Rollaway bed/cot: A portable metal bed/cot with a frame that folds in half with the mattress when not in use so it can be rolled away into a closet (or elsewhere) for compact storage. Sheeting: a woven or non-woven fabric other than knits that have a degree of sizing and are somewhat stiff.
spring frame. Also used in a bedstead to support the box spring. Sleep Products Safety Council hangtag: Used voluntarily by bedding producers since 1987, the safety hangtag program provides critical consumer information about the safe use of sleep products. Manufacturers certify that they use the tag only on mattresses that meet the Federal Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads. The tag is available in a hangtag or permanent label. Smooth top: A plain surfaced mattress, neither tufted nor quilted. Also called button-free.
Side rail: A metal or wood rail, which hooks into the outside edges of a headboard and footboard to provide the support base for a foundation and mattress.
Spring wire: Wire made from high carbon steel, characterized by toughness, strength and ductility. Typically furnished in 8 to 18 gauge for bedding industry applications.
Sisal: A product of the henequen plant formed into a pad and used as an insulator. Named after the. small port of Sisal in Yucatan.
Steel unit construction (for box springs): The spring construction used as the main support system inside a box spring.
Slats: Narrow strips of wood used to support the coils in the box
Stitch bonded pad: See Fales Pad.
Super zoned box spring frame: A support, generally wood, attached longitudinally to the underside of a foundation for added support where the main body weight rests. Another important structural point is that the vertical slats are turned on edge for added strength. This is extremely important on queen sizes and for 4-poster beds where typically no center support is provided. Also known as a “center rail.” Tape: Fabric material that closes over the rough-sewn edge where the top and bottom panels are joined to the border of a mattress or box spring. Tape edge: A specified type of sewing machine designed to stitch binding tape around the top and bottom edges of the mattress, joining the panels with the border and closing the mattress. Tempering: Heat treatment of wire to reduce brittleness. Accomplished by electric charge, oven heat or both. Also known as “stress relieved”. Ticking: Fabrics for covering mattresses and foundations. Common
145
types include: stretch knits, woven damasks, knits and nonwovens. Torsion bars: A type of spring system used in box springs characterized by square-shaped wire forms. Trundle bed: A low bed that is rolled under a larger bed. In some constructions, the lower bed springs up to form a full bed or two single beds as in a high riser. Tufting: Consists of passing twine, cords or tape vertically through the mattress from top to bottom, knotting and securing the loops thus formed with tufts, buttons, or lacing. The purpose is to hold the mattress filling in place. Uniflex grid: A steel wire grid used to bridge the “mouth” of the coils on an innerspring unit to prevent “pocketing” of insulation down into the coil and to eliminate “coil feel.” Also helps to distribute the body weight of a person. Urethane foam: Synthetic (chemically foamed) flexible urethane used for mattress cores and as a
cushioning material. As a core, it’s the main support system. Generic term covering both polyester and polyether foams. Ventilator: Metal or plastic screens attached to the sides and sometimes the ends of mattresses to permit the passage of air. Unnecessary with normal high quality materials used today, except for hospital type mattresses with wetproof covers. Visco-elastic foam: Also known as “memory foam.” Slow recovery urethane foams that are temperature sensitive. They conform to the body and distribute pressure according to body heat and dynamics. Waterbed: A sleep system employing a water-filled vinyl bladder as its primary support system. Original models relied on rigid framing to contain the vinyl components and were known as a “hardside”. Newer styles consist of vinyl components (bladder and liner) typically encased in foam and
made to look like a conventional mattress, usually paired with a regular upholstered foundation. Also called a “softside” waterbed. All versions are sometimes referred to as “flotation beds.” Welded grid top: Basic wire welded into a lattice to which box spring coils, formed wire or modules are fastened. Offers even weight distribution, yet allows some flex and give. Wood bed: A bed with a headboard and footboard made of wood, having side rails of wood or metal that support the foundation and mattress. Wood frame (for box springs): The wood frame in a box spring on which the spring construction is mounted. Woven stripe: A once ubiquitous woven ticking with colored stripes. The style was referred to as “ACA”, the traditional designation for the 8 oz. blue- and white-striped ticking that has mostly fallen out of favor and is seldom produced.
