From The Editor
Turkey’s economy and foreign trade full speed! As is known, we experienced a very tragic coup attempt on 15th July 2016. A group of treacherous forces infiltrated into Turkish governmental institutions, particularly the Turkish Army, tried to seize the control of the government in an ineffectual endeavor. We, in our history, have never witnessed such a movement not only against the elected government, but also against Turkish Public. However, as it is observed by the whole world, a political, even a military movement lacking public support is destined to fail.
We are lucky that this movement was immediately suppressed by the heroic efforts of Turkish People. We, as one of your Turkish suppliers, have instantly opposed this non-democratic and violent act of treason as well as our entire nation. We are happy to observe that, after such an unfortunate event, Turkish economy is standing strong with all of its institutions operating regularly and even more effectively. Thanks to the precautions by the Central Bank of Turkey along with reassuring and unifying statements by all the political parties. All these helped our economy to recover after the initial shock. I can confidently say that our companies do operate without any trouble, back to its levels just before this incident. Following the summer vacation the busiest business months have started. Our first stop will be Shanghai where Intertextile Home Textile will open on August 24. In mid-September we will be at The Hotel Show of Dubai, which opens on September 17, 2016. We will observe the innovations at this most important event of MENA region.
In the last week of September, we will travel to Moscow, capital city of Russia with which our relations have been improved again, for Heimtextil Russia fair. The next issue will be the special SLEEPWELL EXPO issue. We are excited to be in that important event and we are anxiously counting down. We have a great many respectful brands in our show from all segments of the sleep products industry from machinery to mattresses, from chemicals to all spare parts used by the manufacturing industry.

SLEEP WELL EXPO 2016 JUST AROUND THE CORNER! Despite some negative happenings around the world the countries have been struggling to increase their exports and straight up their economies. Turkey ranks fourth in growth among G20 countries. The country still tries to grow more and is conscious of the fact that the growth will be possible by exports of value added products. When we look at the furniture exports, there is only an export price of USD 3.69 per kg. Turkey targets to achieve 7 USD/kg. by 2023. Mattress business is lucky at this regard. Usage of less wood, development of roll mattresses, higher prices because of innovative mattresses, all help this item to reach higher value and to contribute to the economy.
While we have a little time to October I would like to open a parenthesis for SLEEP WELL EXPO 2016. As you know the first two edition of the show had arose great interest and we had drown a growth vision for the future years. We have confronted some unethical and unfair competition from our competitors but we have been advancing on our way as foreseen before. Our preparations are on the way and we are close to the end. We will make our show with the best way. You can get your free ticket from our website: http://eng.sleepwellexpo.com/e-ticket/. I hope we have the pleasure of seeing you at our show. Best regards,
Omer Faruk Gorun

Kırayteks hopeful for the future
Onur Kirayoglu: “We programmed our target for this year more cautiously but it hasn’t been to hit our targets as early as the 7th month of the year.”
Producing mattress ticking fabric for almost quarter of a century, Kırayteks continues manufacturing by new investments. Accelerating its mattress ticking fabric production with new weaving and knitting machines, the company has the flexibility to customize the products in line with the demands of its customers. Stressing the importance of
sustainability in exports, Onur Kirayoglu, member of the board of the company, says that design issue is an important factor in competition. He said they had planned lower target in line with the fluctuations in the market but they had already hit their targets in the seventh month of the year.
19
As Kırayteks, can you tell about your newly finished product and its features you launched recently? “There are many trends in the world. These are about health, naturalness and hygiene. We cooperate with many leading international chemical player. We work on the latest developments together with them. Due to our experience in dying process, we can enhance quality of product and fabric. In addition, we provide business partnership services on this field. Our customers share different ideas with us and then we realize the ideas. We perform on scented fabric. Mattress manufacturers look for naturalness and softness properties. Technology developed so much even in polyester, we have become to be unable to differen-
tiate between polyester and cotton through special applications and innovations. Polyester is not a healthy product. However, it can give the softness of cotton.”
DESIGN PLAYS A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN COMPETITION So, are these features being looked for to customize product or increase salability?
“We’re not the company that performs for that. We are purchasing from supplier which has made laboratory work and productize, then we process. We enhance value of products with updates and improvements. Somehow antibacterial certificates are asked for by some situation as in public bidding. When we deliver fabric to laboratory and
20
Onur Kırayoglu, Member of Board of Kırayteks then results are coming. Thus, we receive certificate on “no bacterial growth in the fabric and this procurement of anti-bacterial works”. For example, Aleo Vera. This feature provides balance pH of the skin, moisture and vitality when it contacts the skin. People attach importance to such things and they take a risk to pay such product. As first, softness of the mattress is important for consumer. That opens you first door in offering. And they examine mattress in showroom and lastly they look pattern of the mattress. Design plays a very important role in competition. A certain frame plays role in the design as well.”
What about new investments? “Our investments in dying continue. We have dyeing and finishing machines. We provided new machines for weaving and finishing. We will have machine which are just for fabrics of mattress ticking. In this way, we can manufacture desired product more quickly.”
Do you have market to export? “Our operations on market we have exported mattress ticking for 10 years still continue. It is very important to be permanent in export. We export mattress ticking to about 20 countries. Customers notice that our fabric belongs to us when they see them. That’s why we proved it. When Turkish market considered, we have a lot to do for domestic market.”
How do you foresee the situation of the sector in the coming period? For the negative developments in the domestic and international markets we had kept our targets cautiously. For this reason it wasn’t difficult for us to realize our targets as early as in the seventh month of the current year. We believe that our growth will continue due to the investments we have realized. We think that the conflicts we have been experiencing with our neighbors have been in a normalization period and this, in its turn, will help our exports to increase in the near future.

Şişmanoğlu, monthly production 5 million sqm

Sismanoglu Textile has been producing materials and accessories such as bed wicks, capsules and labels for mattress manufacturers since 2004 in Beykoz, Istanbul.. “Having the largest collection for bed wicks in Turkey, more than 100 varieties, we emphasize on business discipline in my company, says Tahsin Sisman, the proprietor of Sismanoglu company. He informed about his firm and activities.
26
When was your firm established? I started with only one machine in Beykoz in 2004. However, I have been in this business when I was eighteen years old. Started from the kitchen of the business as apprentice, master and at last as entrepreneur. We served as the service team for Ledmak company both in the country and abroad, then in 2004 I decided to buy a machinery to produce. In one year, the number of machinery reached to five, and now we have 30 machines. How large is your production facility and your production volume? When said only capsules and bed wicks it does not explain what we are doing. They can be grouped in such categories as printed, luxury, leather types. We also produce labels and handles for carriage for mattress manufacturers. We also produce upon orders of our
customers. Firms supply us leather and we make them into semi-finished parts.
What kind of wicks do you produce? How important are these for the value of mattresses? 80 to 90 percent of our products are in the bed wick category. Wicks have been changed seriously in the last three years. Everybody now are interested in the outlook and visual qualities of mattresses. Actually, patterns of wicks have to be similar to the motifs of fabrics. If you do this, customers are not interested in the price you have offered. Mattresses are simple visually. Buyers do not open the beneath of the mattress and do not look inside. What distinguish the mattresses are their accessories.

Investing two million dollars in Kazan, Ankara, the company now has a new factory of 3500 sqm.
Bed Covers starts at new facility Having been in the business since 1989 as high volume producer of textiles, the Bed Covers moved in a new factory in 2016, equipped with latest technologies and started to produce more specific bed covers. Deputy general manager Duygu Gunaydin informed about her company and recent developments they have experienced.
Duygu Gunaydin, Deputy General Manager
Would you brief on the first half of the year from your company’s point of view? In the first half of the year our firm has invested 2.1 million dollars with its own resources in a new
factory of 3500 sqm that has been built in Saraykoy Kazan, Ankara. We aimed to produce the highest quality in this factory combining our quality staff with knowledge and modern systems.
What is the value added by your new facility to your brand? The innovations that are brought by this new production facility and the machinery used have improved our manufacturing spaces and quality as well as the speed of production. These are valuable points for our brand equity and our capacity and performance on the way of catching our targets.
29
What has been changed when you moved into your new facility? Our production volume was increased by 300 %. The time and speed that we saved in the factory has enabled us to expand our product varieties and to develop new products. In line with these developments our sales volume and production ratios have been increasing. All of these, and the growing sales have empowered our efforts and our competitive power in international markets. What are your additional comments? Our visions and missions are to produce new values for the humanity and for the economy, being open to the environmental developments, to offer higher quality for better customer satisfaction to be an innovate and a distinguished brand in the sector. For this reason we say that our motto is “time to change.

BOYTEKS designs setting the trends in the sector
BOYTEKS, among the major and most innovative brands of industrial textile, started to have its name rather frequently with its designs in 2016. BOYTEKS, has become the number one preferred brand of industrial buyers for its mattress ticking, upholstery fabric and carpet manufacturing, has also become a favourite brand counterfeit the most.
37
Dr. Gokmen Kara, Marketing Manager of BOYTEKS Mattress Ticking, who highlighted that they are one of the first brands that spring to mind when innovation is at stake in the sector, has also said, ‘BOYTEKS, today, is a well-known and recognized brand within its target audience whenever you go throughout the entire world. We have realized exports to more than 100 countries last year. Our teams, ranging from pattern design to R&D, from Quality Management to Logistic units, have been in intensive endeavours. Our manufacturing and collection teams are always together with our sales team on field and with out customers. We are traveling with these teams to more than 50 countries. We are a very young and dynamic team. We are in an endeavour to present what our customers’ expectations are and even exceed beyond those. We have made serious investments in design in the recent years. We have increased the number of our teams and we performed activities in order to gain different perspectives of the provider
approach and interpretation of the countries towards patterns and designs are very different. We are also successfully able to manage these discrepancies and differences emerged within the target audience and geography.’

to protect the authenticity. We started to reap the fruits of those moves and accomplish satisfactory outcomes. Currently, major bed manufacturers do utilize the patterns of BOYTEKS and request those. This is a very significant step for us in the course of brandling.’ Dr. Gokmen Kara highlighted that it is a brand with the high geographical extent and prevalence and added that ‘the
Mr. Kara, commented that they attach great importance to effective utilization of technology and mobile applications and continued his speech as ‘we are in an endeavour with our marketing team regarding how we can provide better services to our customers, how we can take on a better consultancy task for our customers. Due to the mobile applications recently developed by us, our customers now are able to design their own beds and have the opportunity to see the bed of their dreams before manufacturing process. This application provides serious benefits and advantages to our customers in terms of accelerating the work processes and avoiding problems that can occur in the post-manufacturing process.”

Elektroteks tripled production Moved recently into a new facility, Elektroteks shortens lead-time
Aiming to develop new machinery, automation systems and production lines for the mattress industry, the company tripled its production in its new factory. Selling to 80 countries, general manager Orhan Guler informed about R&D activities and his company.
with the new organization these operations became much easier and faster. Of course, the volume of the production is increased remarkably, too. On the other hand, our R&D team focuses more on development and inventions with the new equipment and structure.
Recently you moved to a new factory. What has been changed with this move?
As an exporter how do you evaluate the mattress sector in Turkey and in abroad?
There are high-tech new systems that we work on it and will released within this year,
There is no need to mentions that there are some serious problems for the economy and
39
politics this year and these problems are not limited with Turkey borders. However, so far we have not been affected, orders are rising and export percantage is increased from 70% to 85% for the first four months and the production volume is increased more than 2.5 times within last 6-7 months with the new factory site of 12000 sqm closed production area and new investments on machinery. Thanks to our policy of focusing high-tech systems, we estimate the remarkable growth rate of ours for the past years will increase this year.
What is the importance of fairs especially on your exports? The word of mouth about our customer services is the most important advantage for us. This is a major power behind our sales. However, buyers wants to have a real experience about our
40
machinery by observing them in the fairs. Fairs are important. We participated in Interzum lately. Sleepwell is on the agenda. We will be there.
What are your plans for production and for exporting in the year 2016? We are expanding our volume in certain areas. We move fast in the markets. As I mentioned our volume has increased remarkably. We recently developed a new foam packaging machinery. It saves costs and provides advantages to producers. We sold this to a Turkish customer. There are some new big turnkey projects that we will be implementing overseas markets within a few months. We also invest developing our global service network.
What are the differences between machinery that are demanded by foreign mattress manufacturers? Production styles and varieties are changing in this sector. Each culture has its own style of both machinery and mattresses. To meet the changing demands of buyers in different countries, we offer specialized projects to our customers. Since we sell to 80 countries, demand from abroad is increasing. You cannot sell standard mattress machinery in every country. Before preparing a special offer to our prospective buyers we study their conditions, products they made, their facilities and negotiate about a special project. Then we start to produce the machinery.
Nova keeps aggressive investing 42
Increasing its sales by investing in spring production Nova foam and steel company opens a new factory by the end of 2017. Harvesting the results of earlier investments as increasing wire and spring sales, Nova foam and steel company started a new phase of investment to expand capacity even more. Chairman of the board, Mustafa Taka, informed about the new facility and said, “Our sales to export markets have increased. We sold to every country except Austria.
Mustafa Taka, Board Chairman
On the new phase of investments We increase wire production volume. Recently sales were increased by one and half folds
following the latest investment. Encouraged from this success we keep our investments for more production. We began to sell to other industries out of mattress sector, and started to produce for automotive and agriculture industries. Sales to mattress industry have also been increased. Also, product varieties are proliferated.
On production capacities and exports Annual production capacity for wire has been expanded to 70 thousand tons. Recently we sell
43
to 56 countries. We decided to invest more in spring and garment machinery. We completed investments in foam production and have bought a land for the second factory building. By the end of 2017 it will be operational.
On the comparison of the mattress sector in Turkey with the industry in other countries Since there are need for more mattress and more producers the industry is still growing. We were successful in the expansion in
foam industry as well as in wire and spring side. Mattresses are produced now at higher and higher quality standards. Every player in Turkey follows this trend. Many of the companies try to address upper segment of the market they aimed. And, new entrants in the market follow what the leading brands have done.
OEKO-TEX presents its new brand strategy 44
Global full-service provider for sustainable textiles – Fresh design for Standard 100 and STeP by OEKOTEX® certification – Closure of OEKOTEX® certification center in Germany
®
Zurich – From product certification in accordance with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, which was first introduced in 1992, the International OEKO-TEX® Association has now, through the continuous further development and expansion of their portfolio, established itself as a full-service provider for independent certifications and services for greater sustainability along the textile value-creation chain. OEKO-TEX® is now also taking account of this strategic change from niche provider for human-ecological product safety to a global system solution for brands, retailers and manufacturers with a new brand architecture. The focus is on the OEKO-TEX® logo and the claim
“Confidence in Textiles”, which over the past almost 25 years has become known across the industry – an international synonym for effective consumer protection, responsible handling of chemicals and the use of environmentally friendly production technologies and compliance with fair working conditions. “The theme of sustainability has represented increasing challenges for our customers from industry and trade for years and they are looking for suitable solutions”, explains OEKO-TEX® General Secretary Georg Dieners. “With our product portfolio we are able to provide wide-ranging assistance for this. We offer practi-
46
cal tools that they can use to successfully overcome the varied requirements at all operational levels. For our customers, however, it does not matter what the individual solutions are called. The important thing for them is that OEKO-TEX® is a reliable and competent partner. Therefore,” summarizes Dieners, “in our future communication, the umbrella brand “OEKO-TEX®” and our slogan “Confidence in Textiles” will be in the foreground. Our individual product modules, or rather the sufficiently known brands within the OEKO-TEX® system, are arranged under the umbrella brand to strengthen this and meet the needs of our customers.” OEKO-TEX® has already presented the new brand design during the market launch of the MySTeP database, the MADE IN GREEN product label and the ECO PASSPORT certification for textile chemicals. Beginning in autumn 2016, the modernized appearance will also be used
with the most well known OEKO-TEX® brand, the STANDARD 100, and the STeP certification. At that point, the new STANDARD 100 product label and the refreshed STeP logo for B2B communication will also be available to more than 10,000 partner companies around the world. Also as part of these changes, the OEKO-TEX® certification center in Frankfurt (Main) will cease operations on June 30th. “Germany is the only country within the OEKO-TEX® Association in which the laboratory tests and the issue of the certificates in accordance with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 have previously been carried out by two separate institutions”, states Dieners to explain the closure of the certification center. “However, globally standardized processes and structures relating to the certification process as per the STANDARD 100 do not just simplify the work for us,” says Dieners, “they also simplify
the work for our customers. They will have a central contact person in the future with whom they can discuss all issues relating to the certification.” As an official OEKO-TEX® member institute in Germany, the Hohenstein Textile Testing Institute GmbH & Co. KG will take on the laboratory tests as well as the issue of STANDARD 100 certificates.
With the new umbrella logo, the OEKO-TEX® Association is conveying their importance as a global full-service partner for the implementation of greater sustainability along the textile value-creation chain. The current OEKO-TEX® portfolio consists of five certifications and services for manufacturers, brands and retailers along the textile supply chain. Beginning in autumn 2016, companies with the OEKO-TEX® certificate can also use the new STANDARD 100 label for product labeling and other commercial purposes. The OEKO-TEX® partner companies will receive more detailed information over the course of the year. Production facilities certified in accordance with STeP by OEKO-TEX® will also receive the refreshed STeP logo for their B2B communication in good time. © OEKO-TEX®

Made in Germany from fiber to end product: New mattresses for the contract sector
Trevira, Mattes & Ammann have developed a variety of qualities for mattress covers and they recently extended their product range for the segment to include a collection in Trevira CS to cater for the contract market.

For many years Mattes & Ammann from Tieringen, specialists in circular and warp knitting, have used Trevira yarns for their high quality circular knitted and warp-knitted products. Here particular note falls on applications in the automotive sector and on Trevira CS qualities for seat covers on trains. Now, however, the topic of “living” is a segment growing in importance for the Swabian textile company, and especially in the mattress sector. Working with fiber manu-
facturer Trevira, Mattes & Ammann have developed a variety of qualities for mattress covers and they recently extended their product range for the segment to include a collection in Trevira CS to cater for the contract market. Within the contract market, safety takes on great significance from the very beginning of project planning. Spectacular large-scale fires, such as the hotel conflagration on New Year’s Eve 2015 in
50
Dubai, continually bring this subject back into the public eye. Due to fire safety regulations, flame retardant drapes, decorative and upholstery fabrics are established standard in hotels, hospitals and in care homes today. The use of flame retardant mattress covers makes an additional contribution towards preventive fire protection.
New developments for all contract sectors The new range currently includes three qualities in various grammages and in fabric weights of 230 – 365 g/m², with the result that the cover can be adapted to the different structure and the desired weight of the mattress. A variety of looks offers further possible choices, highlighting the wide range of fabric constructions. Every newly developed article bears the trademark approval for Trevira CS. Working with Werkmeister based in Henstedt-Ulzburg, the manufacturer of top-end mattresses, Mattes & Ammann have also set in place the complete IMO certification for the maritime sector (both Module B and Module D), so that these mattresses are suitable for maritime applications. This includes use on cruise liners and yachts. Mattress manufacturer Breckle in Weida too has mattresses for the maritime sector, correctional facilities and contract applications in its portfolio and will in future be using Trevira CS fabrics from the Mattes & Ammann collection for its covers. Alongside products for shipping, mattresses with permanently flame retardant covers are also of interest for aircraft for instance (catering for First Class equipment on long-distance flights). The same applies to barracks, psychiatric clinics or penal institutes – indeed anywhere there is a need for mattresses and where particular safety regulations apply.

The virtues of the new development are two: the high quality of “Made in Germany” embedded in the article from fibre to end product and the permanent flame retardancy of the covers, a
benefit that is not lost even after washing. Trevira CS materials are easy care and kind to the skin, and Trevira fibres and yarns meet the human-ecological demands of Oeko- Tex 100 standard.

scope of our production segment. Continuous model developments have also been procured among our main product groups. Color combinations are successfully performed by our expert staff in accordance with several designing studies in compliance with different regions of the world. Our covers that provide numerous advantages not only for producers but also for users are served within the sector along with its washable, breathable, qualified fabric and eye-brightening designs. They are suitable for use especially in places where beds are used all together with a need of hygiene such as hospitals, military camps, dormitories. Thanks to the advantage brought by the bedding cloth which is suitable for being washed, it is a preferable product among the bedding sector. “Our firm which is located in Kayseri that is one of the first things that come to mind when bedding sector is uttered has an advantage of being close to the raw material sources. All around the world, out of Kayseri, innovative product researches have been procured. COVERTEKS that continuously negotiates with the firms known for their innovative products especially in bedding sector analyses all kinds of products which will create a difference in its products and studies them in order to add them among its products. Firms with which we have been working are the firms that are well-known all around the world and made their marks within the borders of bedding sector. “We have been getting into the act in the industrial area which is known as Furniture City that has recently established in Kayseri.

Our capacity of production had begun as 3000 covers per month and this amount has reached at 5000 in time. With our trained and specialized employees, designing and sewing phases are completed, and after quality control phase, timely delivery phase is procured. We have been performing trouble-free studies thanks to our high technology machines. “COVERTEKS, a firm dominant in exportation, had performed its first exportation to Jordan right after its entrance into the sector. India, England, Holland, France and Germany are the principal countries to which we have been exporting. Our firm is operated with a structure of 80% exportation and 20% domestic sales. We are able to land our sales in regions where mattress cover use is more common. However, one of the main activities of our company is to become active in different regions by explaining the advantages of washable covers to the bed producers. Progressive attention towards mattress covers in Turkey reflects upon our demands. We aim at having success in regional sales by designing products on country basis. “Like it has been as this all around the world, there is an intensive competition in Turkey, too. Production capacity is pretty high. However when costs on the basis of machine parks are considered, competence is completely cost-oriented. On that point, while our firm minimizes the costs, it also provides competence advantages through appealing bedding designs.
“Lastly, COVERTEKS, despite the fact that it is a new firm within the scope of the sector but good at progressing thanks to its experienced managers and employees, has a place in the sector with its production capacity with a power of modeling designs, trouble-free
trading intellection, rapid delivery and post-sale services. The fact that it provides all of them with admissible price levels is another advantage of ours. I relay our love and respect to all of our firms that have been operating within the borders of bedding sector.”

TENCEL - enabling ‘circular economy’ in the textile world & next-generation ecological fiber 72
Lenzing is pushing new frontiers in ecological innovation and circular economy.
®
Lenzing achieved another milestone in its innovation heritage in the textile industry by developing a TENCEL® fiber based on cotton fabric waste. Lenzing is the first manufacturer worldwide to offer such cellulose fibers incorporating recycled materials on a commercial scale. TENCEL®, already a market success as an eco-friendly fiber, is now achieving another key milestone by producing from natural resources what is likely the most sustainable fiber. TENCEL® from cotton waste fabrics will further build
Lenzing’s reputation as a leader in the field of environmental technology and will push new solutions in the textile industry towards circular economy by recycling waste. “For Lenzing, developing circular business models in the fashion industry ensures the decoupling of business growth from pressure on ecological resource consumption. It reduces the need to extract additional virgin resources from nature, and reduces the net impact on ecological resources,” says Robert van de Kerkhof, CCO of Lenzing.
73
Lenzing is launching a new TENCEL® fiber made from cotton waste fabrics to drive ‘circular economy’ solutions in the textile industry. The new generation of lyocell fibers will be the most ecological wood-based fiber on the planet – combining cotton waste recycling with Lenzing’s pioneering closedloop TENCEL® production on a commercial scale. TENCEL® the most ecological fiber from Mother Nature - now featuring circular economy TENCEL® has already been awarded the EU award for the most eco-friendly production process based on 99.7% closed loop circulation in the production and use of bio-energy. The renewable raw material of wood from sustainable forestry is another key advantage in terms of sustainability for TENCEL®. The latest next-generation TENCEL® fiber combines the best of two worlds – recycling cotton waste fabrics and using the most sustainable TENCEL® technolo-
74
gy – to produce one of the most ecological wood-based fibers on the planet. The recycling of cotton waste fabrics into virgin textile TENCEL® fibers offers a practical solution to enable circular economy in the apparel industry. New approaches to marketing The new TENCEL® fiber introduces an innovative approach to marketing. The fiber is not sold directly to yarn or fabric manufacturers. It will be exclusively offered to leading retailers and brands that in turn could produce their garment collections in the most sustainable way by engaging the right value chain partners. This ensures close co-operation and transparency in the entire textile value chain.
A new type of identification procedure is employed to guarantee transparency for the TENCEL® fiber. This allows Lenzing to assure retailers that the TENCEL® fibers in the garment are indeed the most eco-friendly wood-based fibers. At the current time, the fiber is being tested with selected brand manufacturers and retailers and is at the point of being introduced to the market. “Close cooperation with the sustainability leaders in the retail business gives us the chance to find common solutions to overcome sustainability related challenges in the fashion industry and effectively implement circular economy concepts,” van de Kerkhof explains. “The next generation TENCEL® fiber is revolutionizing the fiber industry and has the potential to significantly change consumers’ behavior,” van de Kerkhof continues.

Pollen on textiles – how to reduce your allergen load

Special finishes and new test set up for pollen adhesion / repellence may offer hay fever sufferers relief when using every day textiles
BOENNIGHEIM – In a joint pilot study, scientists from the William Küster Institute at the Hohenstein Institute and CHT R. Beitlich GmbH in Tübingen have established some important basic principles for pollen management on textile surfaces. With the help of a pollen test bed, it will now be possible accurately to assess the pollen allergy risk posed by textile surfaces, so as to bring relief for allergy sufferers who react to pollen.
Whereas people who are allergic to dust mites are now able to protect themselves from mites with encasings, there has until now been no effective textile protection for people allergic to pollen. In Germany, about one in six of the population suffers from hay fever. For them, the torment begins each year in spring, a time of red eyes, a runny nose and sudden attacks of sneezing: it is the pollen from trees, shrubs, grasses and crops that triggers these
77
symptoms. Pollen adheres readily to clothing or domestic textiles and then finds its way through the respiratory system into the body, where it triggers an allergic reaction in people who are over-sensitive to it. Furthermore, the pollen is either carried in the air or on clothing and ends up inside people’s houses, where it can remain for a long time on curtains, sofas, carpets and bedding. To counteract these permanent sources of exposure, scientists at CHT R. Beitlich GmbH have developed two special anti-pollen textile finishing treatments. The two biofunctional finishes work in opposite ways: depending on which coating material is applied, it either repels the pollen or binds it in. This approach, based on altering the physical characteristics of the surface, is intended to maximise or minimise the adhesion/stickiness of the pollens that land on the textile surface through convection or diffusion. For example, clothing may have pollen-repellent properties, in order to reduce the amount of pollen that is brought into the home after a walk in springtime, while it is better for domestic textiles like sofas, carpets and curtains to have a pollen- binding effect, in order to keep the troublesome allergens as far away as possible from the allergy sufferer. In order to assess the allergy risk of textiles for hay fever sufferers, the Hohenstein scientists have developed a test set up for pollen adhesion / repellence in the laboratory which simulates the flight of pollen and helps them
Picture of nettle pollen on a textile, taken with a scanning electron microscope. © Hohenstein Institute
study how it adheres to textiles. This method of testing enables scientists accurately to assess the ability of a textile finish to absorb pollen, retain it or deliberately release it. The newly developed test set up for pollen adhesion / repellence offers textile manufacturers the chance of developing optimized clothing and domestic textiles in future for people who are allergic to pollen, in order to alleviate the annoying symptoms of hay fever.
Set up for pollen adhesion / repellence: Pollen was swirled about in a sealed container with a piece of textile, to simulate the flight of pollen through the air. Then the number of grains of pollen adhering to the textile was measured. This measurement was compared with those for a duster (the control textile, pollen-binding) and a special PTFE fabric (pollen-repellent). The results show that both pollen-binding (green group) and pollen-repellent (red group) properties can be achieved by applying a finishing treatment.

Bekaert grows more by acquiring Deslee Clama
Hakan Ucar, Head of Product Management and Development of BekaertDeslee Europe: “We have positioned ourselves at a different level from our competitors. We consider the entire world as our market. Starting as a family business in 1892, there was a continuous growth ongoing. Finally, joining to the Haniel Group last year, Bekaert Textiles has been continuing its growth by acquiring Deslee Clama this year. Pointing out that they were currently the leader in the market Hakan Ucar, Head of Product Management and Development of BekaertDeslee Europe has recently furnished us with important information about the sector. He stated that being a big name in this industry necessitated becoming closer to the market adding that Bekaert has a production footprint around the globe for this reason. He responded the questions of Sleep Tech Magazine.
Hakan Ucar
First of all what was the main reason of joining of Deslee Clama to Bekaert? Originally, Bekaert started as a family business. However, already many years ago it was acquired by large industrial groups. In 1992, Bekaert joined the Dutch Gamma Holding and in 2010, the private equity funds Gilde & Parcom acquired the shares. The markets and countries where growth would be realized were determined by different researches. The method of doing this is becoming as much innovative and flexible as possible. We are operating in a sector of which margins are limited. This requires being as close as possible to
79
the markets, because of logistics costs, organizational advantages and really understanding our customers. Time to Market is very important that you have to offer right products to the market on time with a reliable service. We saw these facts and our group decided to increase our investments. In line with this, Haniel Group, a German family equity company and a.o. a major partner of Metro Group, was very much interested in the growth possibilities of Bekaert Textiles and acquired all of the shares of Bekaert last year. The acquisition of DesleeClama in fact fits within the execution of our growth strategy. BekaertDeslee Textiles is uniquely positioned to deliver value in the coming years through our unique global footprint with manufacturing in all major markets on all continents, a comprehensive product portfolio and an unmatched innovation capacity. The combined organization is committed to invest heavily in unique designs and fabric constructions, operational excellence and service. What has been changed in the industry following the merge of Bekaert and Deslee Clama? We are ahead of our competitors and have a production network in 19 countries. Currently, we have factories in Europe in Romania, Spain, Turkey, Estonia, and Poland. We also have manufacturing
80
operations in the Czech Republic. Both of our headquarters are in Belgium. Now we are consolidating both of our headquarters in one location physically.
How has this merging affected your position in the market? We believe the Footprint is important. Obviously one of our goals was to improve our share in the market to a certain level. Before that it was essential for us to establish our sales&manufacturing organizations. Later on, we will take certain decisions based on our strong leadership position in the market. For us the entire world is our market. So, we need to make sure that we can supply our products at a global level. This is our core competitive advantage. Our customers draw us to be global because they became increasingly global. We anticipate larger customers will prefer working with larger supplier like. Smaller manufacturers on the other hand will be beneficial to the local industry, since they would have the capability to produce for certain types of demands faster than the larger producers. Every effective market has room for both small and large players. And we can be both at the same time.

Mert Makina, a world leader in quilting machinery manufacturing Mert Makina entered the mattress machinery production by manufacturing mattress tape edge machines in 1900’s. Shortly after, Mert manufactured its first mechanic multi needle-quilting machine. It is one of the first manufacturers of multi needle quilting machines in Turkey. Over the years, the company has added step-by-step different kinds of ma-
chines to its product range. When it comes to 2000s, according to time’s requirement Mert Makina started to manufacture automatic machines. Now it is the first and only manufacturer that can establish complete mattress manufacturing facility in Turkey thanks to full range of the mattress machineries under the same roof.
83
Technical Details Our M-1200 quilting machine has the ability of straight sewing and jump pattern quilting with 1200 rpm production speed even with the thickest materials. Thanks to the industrial touch panel PC, it is designed to provide ease of use with its features of expansion in width and lengthwise, stitch length adjustment, length adjustment for jump patterns, pattern layout page, remote modem connection, adjustable normal sewing speed and jump pattern sewing speed. Innovations are made such as stopping automatically for personnel safety when bottom and top thread break or end, and when rear or front covers are opened; easy Luper adjustment.
Mr. Nebi Dogan, General Manager of Mert Makina detailed, “Mert Makina is one of the first quilting machinery producers in Turkey. Once we had 2 kinds of computerized quilting machines for mattress and soft furniture production as chain stitch and lock stitch. Now we, as Mert Makina, offer 4 kinds of quilting machines to the service of the mattress manufacturers: M-1200 Multi Needle Double Chain Stitch Quilting Machine M-9000 Multi Needle Lock Stitch Quilting Machine M-2 Double Head Quilting Machine M-1 Single Head Quilting Machine Thanks to this R&D team, we are consistently improving our current machines according the requests of our customers and the ever-changing needs of the sector; moreover we add always new machines to our product range. So
we are able to work on innovative products, which are more speed and functional. The most important feature of Mert Makina’s machines has both strong parts and special software program. Siemens, Ina, Skf, Lenze, Bonfigrioli, that is, our important business partners, raise the worth of our quilting machines. Nowadays Mert Makina’s machines have popularity in the worldwide mattress production sector because we combine the advantages of Europeans and Chinese manufacturers. Sure, we can’t still compete with Chinese prices because we don’t compare our machines’ quality with them. Our quality goes head to head with the European’s. That means we are the best choice who combines best quality with reasonable price. On the other side, when we look at the European, Mert Makina always were hard competitors for the European machinery manufac-
84
turers; high prices, uncommunicative attitudes about technical services and supplying spare parts’ difficulties were negative factors, why lot of mattress manufacturers decide on Mert Makina. That was an important milestone for our growth and our current popularity. We see clearly that the European manufacturers decrease their capacity and they have to reduce their R&D budget. We forecast that they haven’t anymore added technical innovations to their machines. This helps us to catch their technical stand. In the meantime, they desire our machines under their private label. As we mentioned before, the manufacturers from Far East are completely focused on low prices, not on quality. Because of this
wrong focus, the lifecycle of their machines is shortened. In the opposite of that Mert Makina is focused on quality, so we can give long years warranty thank to raw materials with best quality - all electrical equipment from European and iron steal from Turkey. In addition, qualified workforce is one of the most important factors for our qualified production. Nowadays, you can find our machines nearly in all around the world of mattress manufacturers. You can be sure that all over the World in all mattress factories Mert Makina’s machines are in using. Besides our quality and cost advantages, our flexible and wide after sales services are also a sales argument.

4 Continents. 76 Countries. 1 Mission.
Quality and Dynamics Perfection. Totally; Milkay Depending on its recent investments and rising production, Milkay has expanded its export markets to 76. Oguz Ozev, sales and marketing manager of the company informed about their export activities.
What was the return of your recent investments you made in the production from global markets? With the recent investments we made in our factory, we have become one of the largest producers of felts in the world. In a global world that channels of communication were proliferated, companies can reach to the products they need and the suppliers of them. It forces the companies to act more dynamically. Milkay Technic Textile industry we offer solutions, facilities and advantages in their needs for felt to companies all over the world who produce mattresses, coaches and sofas. We also support to our customers by reducing their procurement and stock keeping costs.
Oguz Ozev, Sales and Marketing Manager
89
What countries do you target to enter? Since our foundation, our sales in export markets are growing continuously. By now, customers in 76 countries have encountered with our Milkay felts. By participating in related fairs, we aim to expand
our market coverage and share especially in American and African continents.
What should be the specifications of felts that are used in mattress manufacturing? Basically it is made of by recy-
cling of textile wastes and has an important function in the manufacturing of mattresses. Felt is a material that carries a critical role for the comfort and durability of the mattress. The hardness of the felt may be adjusted according to the desires and preferences of end
users. However, both the quality of the raw materials used in the felt production and the quality of felt that is the result of experience in the production are both important for our company. When compared with total cost of mattresses, the cost/price ratio of felt seems to become negligible for some cases. The up-to-date technology in Milkay textile is the most import-
ant factor in the quality of the product. We produce at the highest productivity rates in our factory. Using quality raw materials and operating
90
on modern machinery in the factory we can be able to produce high grade of felts. We have TSEK and ISO quality certificates that were supported by other systems and process development procedures.
What differences are between the felts produced in Turkey and in abroad? Which country takes the lead? And why? Our products can be grouped by their hardness. Hard felts are used as top of the mattress over springs. Jute fiber felts are used in coaches and softer products as supporting material. Other kinds that we produce are, cotton-woolen black felt that used in quilts, thermo bond felts are for home appliance and construction industries, and automotive felts for automotive industry. In our business, every stage of the production is important from selection and procurement of raw materials, quality of labor, and the selling stage. Having required equipment as in the other fields, Turkish exporters have proved the value of “Made in Turkey motto in all countries in the globe. Local producers and Chinese companies are our major competitors in certain markets in abroad.

Tech-Melt supplies high quality hot-melt glues for the mattress industry Tech-Melt eliminates undesired odors of hot-melt glues
We have recently interviewed Altan Bayat, General Manager of Tech-Melt. He focused on the activities and products of Tech- Melt, particularly on the hot-melt glue and adhesives for the mattress industry.
How do you supply hot-melt glues for the mattress industry? Tech-Melt produces hot-melt glues for domestic and overseas customers, continuously develops new
products and offers services with auxiliary chemical products.
Could you brief us on your recent activities in your sector?
Hot-melt glues offer a variety of benefits compared to other adhesives technologies particularly for mattress and furniture industries. Excellent adhesion, quick set and ease of use are just a few. It should be noted that Tech-Melt has developed a brand new hot-melt glues by eliminating undesired odors.
Our hot melt adhesives span a wide range of technologies based on a broad range of manufacturing and end-use product applications. In packaging, converting, assembly, bookbinding, nonwovens, footwear and many other markets, hot melt glues and adhesives offer a critical advantage: fast processing.
95
Which hot-melt glues and adhesives are generally used in the mattress industry? Unlike water-based or solvent-based adhesives, hot melt adhesives do not require drying. Hot melts begin bonding almost immediately after application, as they cool down to their solidification point. This fast solidification is ideal for use on highly automated manufacturing lines that require rapid bond formation. Could you inform us on your export performance? We upgrade and diversify our export products. We are able to eliminate undesired odors of hotmelt glues utilized for the mattress industry, thereby supplying one of the key inputs for the industry in an efficient way. How do you evaluate the competitive power and export performance of the mattress industry? Actually, Turkey has turned out to be competitive, in terms of price and quality, in its mattress industry. We think that the industry would increase its export volume and diversify its markets in line with high-tech and innovation adopted by the majority of the companies operating in the sector.
Altan Bayat, General Manager of Tech-Melt

FIBERS Staple fibers in polyester, polypropylene and bi-component for manufacturers of pillows, duvets, needle-punched, spun-laced,
carded, thermo-bonded, air laid & chemical-bonded non-woven fabrics. Fipatec from Fiberpartner is quality at competitive prices. Fiberpartner’s history goes back to 1860, when Theodor Wittrup founded a small shop that produced mainly woolen textiles. Theodor’s company grew for over a century, until its manufacturing division was sold to a carpet producer in 1976. That same year, Ole Wittrup established a trading company that would soon become Fiberpartner.

Ăœrosan exports wastage foams Answering our questions about the industry and his company, sales manager Korhan Yilmaz emphasized on quality more on production. Saying that they offer fire resistant products as well, Yilmaz pointed out that their foam is more durable because it is powerful thanks to its densities.
Would you inform us about the establishment of your company and its activities? It was established in 1974 as a company of SDK holding. Since at the beginning we focused on the production of different foams. Presently we produce certain kinds of foams that other companies do not have in their product portfolios. What about your production facility and its capacity? Earlier our factory was in IkÄątelli, Istanbul. We moved in Cerkezkoy where we have a factory of 15
thousand sqm closed area on 40 thousand sqm land. Monthly capacity of the factory is 650 thousand tons annually.
Do you export to Europe and neighboring countries? We export wasted foams. We pressed them to reduce the cost of transport. We can haul 20 tons of foam in a container. About 50 tons of clipped foams are exported to Holland, Egypt and Saudi Arabia each month. The foams are produced for several industries are sold to other countries including Greece. Recently we added Bulgaria in our export markets. What other types of foams do you produce? We also make visco foams, but in limited amounts, not much as our rivals do. Because visco material is cast in boxes to obtain better and healthier products. On the other hand it is not the same to
99
manage a product of 30 meters instead of two meters long. We produce foams for mattresses and for sofas. Before selling anything to the people you have to explain them the positive sides of the products. For that reason we limit the volume of visco foam production.
What kind of foam do you use for mattresses? We have a product called Here. They are high quality foams and we can produce fires resistant varieties of this product. Since they are harder than others they are more durable and can be used for years. We have also porous foams to facilitate ventilation. We carry joint research and development studies with our buyers to produce better products. Our HR foams are mostly used in mattress industry. They are harder and durable than others and more comfortable. Generally foams for mattresses are made of 45 density.
What do you want to say about foam production in Turkey? Foam production in Turkey is growing heavily. Some companies have 3 to 4 factories for production. My forecast is that there are about 26 foam producer company in Turkey, most of them are in Anatolia. There are some producers around Istanbul, like us. However, we have customers in Ankara, Izmir, Bursa and Antakya and in Blacksea region. According to the data furnished by raw material suppliers, our company ranks at 6th place among other producers in Turkey with its 600 to 650 tons
of annual production. All these are also related with costs of mattress manufacturing. Springs are less costly for mattress manufacturers, so they prefers it. But, for the reasons of cost and efficiency both foams and springs have to be used in the manufacturing.
How was the year 2016, and what are your plans for the coming period? As a whole nation, we have overcome a great attack aiming our sovereignty. However we are hopeful for the future. Our business run as usual, but we became more selective among our customers and business partners. Since our production volume is not sufficient for further growth we have to establish a new factory. We have plans for this. In mid term we want to develop new products and focus on them.
Serdar Korhan YÄąlmaz, Sales Manager of Ăœrosan

New products and machinery lines from Kisbu Started its nonwoven spunbond line of 250 cm. Kisbu, improved the quality of its bed covers by using pu film.
Producing fibers and soft felts, Kisbu serves in the furniture and mattress industry with its five factories. Mustafa KÄązkÄąn, export manager of the company, emphasizes on the production, customer services, timely delivery and product quality. He informed us about their new production line for nonwoven products. The new line is of 250 cm width.
How was the first half of the year? It passes by as planned. Especially our new production line of 250 cm is highlye effective. Now we are able to produce variety of felts,
from ten to 150 gram per square meter and up to 250 cm width of rolled felts with different colors.
What do you have to say about your export activities? In the international arena, we want to be heard more by improving our brand awareness as a trusted brand. We will establish this recognition by emphasizing on production, customer services, timely delivery, quality and problem solving abilities. We will focus on not on individual transactions,
101
but on long term cooperation. We want to keep watche closely both our and our customers’ interests as planned in our marketing strategy. We want to make it a worldwide brand name, by selling our products in every country. We want to increase our sales in foreign markets.
Which countries have larger production volumes in the world? What are the differences between these countries and Turkey? China is the greatest producer in the world, but their qualities can only be compared with our products by 30 to 40 % max. We do not compromise on quality we offered to our customers. Our production complies with Edana and Oeco-tex
standards. But, no one in China or in Turkey can reach our quality standards. We deliver our product after testing and sampling some of our production.
How important are your products for mattresses? Our products, namely the felts and fibers are used to keep foams in its form and as a protection material. For this reason, the lower quality of felt beneath may cause deformation on the surface and inner parts of mattresses. So, manufacturers need 100 % pp nonwoven spunbond felt for their manufacturing, to prevent flexions and for the even distribution of pressure and homogeneity of the end product.
What are your additional comments? The 250 cm width production line in our factory that we established last year has improved our production quality. The new spunbond is aimed to the manufacturers of medical, home textile, furniture, mattresses and pocket spring producers. Customer satisfaction about our products is at the highest level. What distinguished from pu film alezes of other kinds made of pvc and pe film is becoming more important for the buyers. So, we increased our production of pu films. This has several advantages including flexibility, wash ability, health and smells.

Benchmarking sleep comfort for bedding industry By HERMAN MOUREAU & JORIS PITTEVILS* MIKE ANDERSON* YUN-SHAN LIU*
ABSTRACT Polyurethane visco-elastic memory foam mattresses can improve sleep by reducing pressure points. This can help to reduce tossing and turning, leading to a deeper sleep. However, some sleepers end up “sleeping hot”, waking up sweating1,2 when using a visco memory foam mattress. In a bid to make mattresses more comfortable, Huntsman has developed RUBIFLEX® Cocoon polyurethane-based foam technology, which can be used to manufacture a cooler, more breathable and flexible foam for bedding, furniture and seating applications. The RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foam system is designed to significantly enhance comfort by reducing the build-up of heat and humidity in foam mattresses, pillows and seat cushions, caused by the body when it is at rest5. Huntsman, in close cooperation with customers, has developed a laboratory procedure to benchmark mattress foams, with the goal of keeping the benefits of reducing pressure points, while addressing “sleep hot” concerns. This paper describes Huntsman’s efforts to measure the pressure distribution across the body of a sleeper over time. More interest-
ingly, it will also describe how to measure the hygrothermal behavior of the microclimate between the participant and the mattress, meaning the change in temperature and the dissipation of humidity in the microclimate over time. We have seen a reduction of 1.5 – 2 °C in the microclimate temperature on our “Cocoon” foams indicating a “cooler” and thus a more relaxed sleep.
slow recovery characteristics after compression, the foam envelopes the body, giving a sensation of being cradled. The foam shields one sleeper from the other, so a sleeper is less affected by the person sleeping next to them. The comfort layer of a mattress is of essential importance for the thermo-physiological quality of the body supporting structure and enhances the sleep comfort of a mattress5.
INTRODUCTION Though slightly lagging behind Europe, visco-elastic polyurethane foams are getting more popular than ever in North America. It was estimated that 1 out of 5 mattresses sold in United States was a full polyurethane foam mattress in 20123. A recent market survey about the types of mattresses consumers would likely buy next showed that up to almost 30% would choose a full memory foam mattress (“Furniture Today”4). The use of polyurethane foams is also increasing in “hybrid” mattresses (adding a layer of polyurethane memory foam to improve comfort in conventional box-spring mattresses). In general, visco-elastic foams are used as a comfort layer to provide a good sleep for consumers because of its
The technology to produce visco-elastic polyurethane foams has evolved rapidly in the past 10 years. However, visco-elastic foams are yet to be perfect. For example, some sleepers end up “sleeping hot”, waking up sweating1,2 when using a visco memory foam mattress. Slabstock producers have introduced new technologies such as gel-infused memory foams to reduce heat built-up concerns. Hence there is still a great desire to develop innovative products to address the above-mentioned issues. In a bid to make mattresses more comfortable, Huntsman has developed RUBIFLEX® Cocoon polyurethane-based foam technology6,7, which can be used to manufacture cool, breathable, flexible foams for bedding, furniture and seating
103
applications. RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foam system is designed to significantly enhance comfort by reducing the build up of heat and humidity in flexible foam, caused by the body when it is at rest. Huntsman, in close cooperation with customers, has developed a laboratory screening method to benchmark mattress foams, with the goal of keeping the benefits of reducing pressure points, while addressing the “sleep hot” concerns. The new screening method was able to measure the pressure distribution across the body of a sleeper over time. We are also able to measure the hygrothermal behavior of the microclimate between the participant and the mattress, meaning the change in temperature and the dissipation of humidity in the microclimate over time. We have seen a reduction of 1.5 – 2 °C in the microclimate temperature on our “Cocoon” foams indicating a “cooler” sleep.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Combining pressure-relieving property of memory foams and the support property of high-resilience foams, RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foams provide excellent support and good pressure distribution – cradling the body and minimizing pressure points to maximize blood flow and promote good sleep.
By designing with a good balance of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments, the polymer structure of RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foam system facilitates water vapor permeability and humidity transmission. Temperature-mapping tests show that the temperature build up in foams based on RUBIFLEX® Cocoon technology is more than 1.5ºC lower than in a comparable memory foam solution. Foams based on RUBIFLEX® Cocoon technology have a good initial hand-feeling and work well in most climates. RUBIFLEX® Cocoon-based foams also have an excellent wet compression set and good tear strength compared to memory foams. Conforming to LGA and CertiPUR® standards, they meet low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) requirements. While the pressure mapping of a visco foam mattress is known in the industry, the measure of hygrothermal behavior of a person sleeping on a mattress is relatively new. Little is known in public literature about the transmission of moisture and heat through mattresses. In collaboration with the test lab Custom8 (a spin-off lab from the Biomechanic Department of the University of Leuven, Belgium, http://www.custom8.be/), Huntsman was able to develop a method to bench mark sleep

comfort in terms of pressure distribution, as well as the hygrothermal behavior of the microclimate between the participant and the mattress. The hygrothermal behavior of the microclimate refers to the change in temperature of the microclimate and the dissipation of humidity in the microclimate over time. The µCliMat is a patented sensor mat from Custom8 containing temperature and humidity sensors specifically designed for the use in layered flexible materials such as mattresses and car seats. With the μ-cliMat sensors, two full size mats were constructed to be able to do measurements with the test person of 80kg, as shown in Figure 1. 2.5 cm of foam was placed on top of a 15 cm core foam. A µ cliMat sensor was placed on the foam, followed by a 1.5 cm piece of foam, another µ cliMat sensor, and a 1 cm layer of foam. Afterwards a 3D image was created by using the μ-CliMon software provided by Custom8. The measurements took one hour. It started with one-and-a-half minutes of measuring without test person, followed by forty-five minutes with the test person on the mattress and then fifteen minutes cooling down without test person.

The temperature mapping of three types of foams with a real person is shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2. Temperature mapping in a mattress during sleep measured 1cm under the body after 45 minutes
The temperature build-up of three tested foams with real person is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3. Temperature build-up in RUBIFLEX速 Cocoon foam against visco and HR foams.
Three types of foams (RUBIFLEX速 Cocoon, visco and HR foams) were tested as shown in Figures 1-3. The data shows that temperature build-up in RUBIFLEX速 Cocoon foam has been shown to be more than1.5oC lower than memory foam. In the same setup, humidity build-up was also tested and the results also show that RUBIFLEX速 Cocoon foam has less humidity build-up than either visco or HR foam (Figure 4 and Figure 5).

As shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5, the RUBIFLEX ® Cocoon foam demonstrated a much slower humidity build-up compared to either HR or visco foams.
CONCLUSION Huntsman has effectively developed a method to measure hygrothermal properties that can better benchmark various types of flexible foams. The test results showed that RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foams can better dissipate heat and humidity than either visco or HR foams in a mattress. These promising data demonstrate that the RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foams can not only provide support and pressure distribution, but also excellent heat and humidity dissipation properties which can lead to a more relaxed sleep for consumers.

country and the sector in recent years, many regulations and directives made for the business volume and the mattress sector which has grown depending on the flow of foreign investments, indicate the importance of the SLEEPWELL Fair, which is an important area in the country. The mattress main sector, sub-industry, machinery and equipment fair which has been awaited for a long time by all sleep products industry professionals, will be successfully held for the 3rd time in Istanbul Fair Center, which is located opposite the Ataturk International Airport, 20- 23 October 2016.
The mattress industry in Turkey is growing rapidly. It has been known that the sector has reached the sales figures of 4 million in the local market in 2014. 95 percent of the market has been consisted of spring mattresses and remaining 5 percent of foam mattresses. The size of the market is very close to TL 1 billiard and the growth rate is 7%. 10 thousand mattresses of Turkey’s total 20 thousand daily are produced in Kayseri. After Kayseri, it comes Istanbul and Izmir. There are more than 400 manufacturers in Kayseri. The production capacity of these firms approaches to 2.7 million. Kayseri holds the half of the total production with 2.5 million mat-
115
tresses. The share of the sector in the foreign market is approximately 60 million dollars. Kayseri performs more than half of the total export value. The mattresses, which are produced in Kayseri, are exported mainly to France, Germany and The Netherlands and other European countries and the different countries of the Middle East. Representatives of the industry express that the trends that are seeking healthier, more comfortable sleep environments, play an important role in growth. According to the industry representatives the 3 million of the 4 million mattresses sold, have been sold to the individual consumers, 1
million to the institutions such as hotels, dorms and hospitals. There are around one thousand hotels which are under construction with 800 thousand-bed capacity in the country and the private sector hospital investments are accepted as an indicator that the growth in the industry will be continuous. With the rising success trend of the industry, the request to announce this success publicly, the desire to have a say in the international areas, the expectations from the industry and that the Voli Fair is able to respond to these expectations and therefore Sleepwell Expo Mattress and Technologies Fair was appreciated by the mattress industry and the fair

resulted in a great success. The mattress industry officials now have bigger expectations from the 3rd Sleepwell Expo Mattress and Technologies Fair, which will be held 20-23 October 2016, after the success achieved at the fair and both the organizer and the exhibitors started to work for the grater targets.
ISTANBUL FAIR CENTER Istanbul Fair Center which hosts Sleepwell Expo Fair in its 9-10 and 11. Halls, is located in the area of Istanbul Ataturk Airport. Istanbul Fair Center is the most appropriate place to arrange the Sleepwell Expo Fair both with its infrastructure and transport and
technical specifications. The venue of 18 thousand square meters in total with its lounge and technical facilities has greatly contributed to perform the fair successfully. The fair venue is very close to the airport in the terms of the international visitors. It is also very close to the subway station and to the intersection point where both TEM and E-5 connections. The service busses operated from the subway as the ring provided an advantage to visitors of the fair. “Our team who worked very intensive to perform Sleepwell Expo Fair successfully, had no difficulties to reach the information because of the industrial
publications which have been published by Istmag Magazine Group, a group company with fair organizer Voli Fair,” Omer Faruk Gorun, Project Manager of the show, said. “Sleep Well and Sleep Tech magazines became the main media sponsors for the fair and since they publicized the event to the world at the preparation period, the show attracted a great many exhibitors and visitors from around the world.”

LEOTEXT at the service of manufacturers to reduce their costs even for more efficiency
Leotext is a leading and experienced company offering excellent solutions to produce at world standards. We had a talk with the chairman of the brand about their success story:
What is your company Strategy? The strategy of Leotext is to produce with a lean production system to reduce costs during manufacturing process by the years of knowledge and the experience set by the founders of the company with fully automated, latest European technological machinery, so final users can benefit from a low cost but world-class quality products.
Ugur Aslan Aydin, Board Chairman Mech. Eng. (B.Sc., M.Sc)
Fully Automated, low cost products achieved by lean production and years of experience in the field gives you an advantage to serve low-priced World class products seems to be your company’s strength, can you also tell us your weak side? It’s a good question. Every organization has strengths and weaknesses. To understand this better we do SWOT analysis that shows us our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and Threats. This enables us to acknowledge our advantages against our competitors, find our weak points, spot good opportunities and obstacles we may face. In this analysis we found that, being a newly found-
121
ed company it takes sometime to be known in the market. In 2013 we entered the global market with a selected range of customers, in the meantime the companies that used our products acknowledges our products and starts to use them in their production. I can confidently say that companies who control their production cost performance index and thrives on their products quality become our natural customers.
What kind of introduction and publicity do you do? Giving customer oriented presen-
tations and joining specialized sectorial exhibitions. For example we have participated in all of the sleep-well exhibitions since the 1st year.
What are your thoughts on weak and strength points of Sleepwell Expo Istanbul? Progress and development happen with transparency, and in this case Sleepwell Expo team works with high-knowledge and discipline. With a detailed content, knowledge and introduction on your media publications gives this
exhibition a distinctive feature. I have a suggestion: You need to make more action with the local media throughout neighboring countries. I believe this will make Sleepwell exhibition a geographical center.
My last question, what is your new goal? We want to make Leotext Textile a deep rooted, long tree that can endure the winds of years; continue to work hard to reach this maturity with own suppliers, workers and customers.
“Anti-dust mite textiles”can also relieve neurodermatitis symptoms 124
Scientific studies confirm the link between dust mite excrement and skin inflammation. The study is very important for bedding manufacturers for testing their products for “anti-dust mite effectiveness”. BOENNIGHEIM – For some time now, people who are allergic to house dust have had the pleasure of knowing when the textiles around them offer proven and effective protection against dust mites. In future, patients suffering from neurodermatitis may also be pleased to find goods that are labeled in this way in the shops: it has been discovered that dust mites can also trigger neurodermatitis. German scientists tested neurodermatitis patients for dust mite allergy and found that 90% of sufferers were also allergic to dust mites, without realizing it. This has now also been confirmed
in a study from England which shows how dust mite allergens activate the immune system and trigger an inflammatory reaction in the skin. Children are most affected by neurodermatitis. They experience symptoms such as red flaky patches of eczema or severe itching. The two studies therefore show that preventing the skin from coming into contact with dust mite excrement, including via textiles, is an important way of counteracting neurodermatitis. “These are two very important studies,” said Prof. Dirk Höfer of the William Küster Institute at the Hohenstein Institute, who
is researching which kinds of clothing can help people with neurodermatitis or sensitive skin, “because they show a link for the first time - the fact that one and the same allergen can irritate both the respiratory tracts and the skin. They also show that suitable textiles could alleviate the symptoms of neurodermatitis.” However, in addition to the effectiveness against dust mites, it is also important to take account of the special requirements that people with sensitive skin or eczema have of textiles, said Prof. Höfer. So as a supplementary measure to prevent and treat
125
neurodermatitis, it is important to use infection-preventing yarns that are not cytotoxic and do not increase skin sensitivity (skin and tissue compatibility). Textiles should also not contain any mechanically irritating fibers, seams or accessories, should create a microclimate with the best possible textile physiological parameters such as thermal conductivity and moisture absorption and wicking, and should not have any occlusive (air-excluding) areas. Finally, they should also be compatible with treatments such as lotions. Until now, manufacturers of bedding and encasings have mainly been interested in testing their products for “anti-dust mite effectiveness”, because textiles that successfully exclude dust mites and the allergens contained in their excrement (Der p1) can protect end users from the attendant symptoms of a house dust allergy. There is therefore a demand for these products, especially from healthcare institutions, hotels and guesthouses but also from private households. However, in the light of the new findings, the manufacturers and retailers of textiles that are specifically intended for neurodermatitis sufferers should also, in the interests of the consumer, attach increased importance to providing evidence that their textiles are “anti-dust mite effective”. But what exactly is meant by this? To support this claim, the Hohenstein Institute offers two accredited tests. On the one hand, the “allergen-resistance of textiles” can be assessed, because bedding, for example, that effectively keeps the dust mite excrement at bay can be awarded the “House
Dust mites feed on flakes of skin and moisture. In addition to mattresses and bedding, they therefore like to infest clothing and domestic textiles such as upholstered furniture and carpets. If these products are beneficial to neurodermatitis sufferers, they need to be labeled “Effective against dust mites”. © Hohenstein Institute
The way “anti-dust mite textiles” work is based on either the dust mites being destroyed by chemical agents (“anti-dust mite treatments”) or the textiles being so dense that no dust mite excrement can penetrate them. Textiles can be tested and assessed for both properties. © Hohenstein Institute
dust and dust mite barrier” label. On the other hand, the “Anti-dust mite effectiveness” test shows whether an item that has been treated actually inhibits the growth of house dust mites or even destroys them. Textiles tested in this way for compliance with the standard NF G39-011 can then be awarded the “Effective against dust mites” label. So this also identifies clothing that is beneficial for neurodermatitis sufferers.
The Hohenstein labels and certificates can be used by textile manufacturers in their marketing. They can successfully appeal to the target groups of “house dust allergy sufferers” and “neurodermatitis sufferers”, as well as healthy people who want to prevent neurodermatitis, and provide useful advice for them when they are buying textiles.

Branded furniture is the preference of the Y generation Turkish Furniture Industrialists Association (MOSDER) continues the research outsourced to Nielsen company. According to the results of the recent research, the consumers who prefer branded furniture across Turkey are within Y generation, who are averagely 34 years old.
Ismail Dogan, Chairman of Mosder
Turkey Furniture Industrialists Association (MOSDER) obtains critical results by examining the results of the research outsourced to Nielsen company and the consum-
er preferring branded furniture in every 2 years. One of the interesting results of the recent research is that the consumers preferring branded furniture are in Y generation. The socio-economic group of the consumers, who are averagely 34 years old, are C1. The ratio of having children in the household is 40 percent, and the average age of the children is 12. MOSDER states on all occasions that the furniture preferred by the consumer should consider the
127
health and safety of the consumer, and should be a reliable brand that makes environmental friendly production. It is critical to be careful against the chemicals in the materials used in the furniture, for that they may be harmful to human health. For example, while purchasing furniture, the consumer should be informed on the “E1 feature” on the particleboard, “phthalate free” feature in fabric; the paints should not contain “heavy metal” and no carcinogen should be used in the glue. Emphasizing that the change of encountering such negative circumstances while purchasing branded furniture is very rare, MOSDER reminds consumers to make a thorough research before buying furniture. According to the branded furniture consumers research, the average household income of the stated age group was TRY 2,153 in 2013, and TRY 2,528 in 2015. Although the sizes of households in this consumer profile, which includes averagely 3 people in one household, seem to have increased, it has actually decreased in terms of square meters.

New requirements for STeP by ® OEKO-TEX certification
Mattress and foam manufacturers can now have their production conditions certified in accordance with STeP. Zurich (hm) STeP by OEKO-TEX® makes the sustainability of production facilities throughout the textile value-creation chain visible using a transparent scoring system. STeP gives brands, retailers, and manufacturers the opportunity to have each area of their company facilities analyzed and assessed according to environmental and social criteria by an independent body. From 1 February 2016, new criteria have come into effect. In the latest version (3.0) of the STeP standard, the following modifications have been made: * The STeP list of excluded harmful substances for textile production (Manufacturing Restricted Substances List or MRSL) now complies with the requirements of the ZDHC initiative (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals). Production facilities that have been certified in accordance with STeP therefore
already meet the ZDHC specifications with regard to the use of specific process chemicals that are to be removed from textile production by 2020. Companies already certified in accordance with STeP will comply with the MRSL criteria of the ZHDC after the next successful conformity audit at the latest. * In the “Environmental Performance” module, the previous requirements have been expanded to include an additional point on handling sludge from waste water treatment. Sludge must be stored by companies with STeP certification in a way that rules out any ground contamination. OEKO-TEX® recommends that sludge residues of this type always be disposed of by professionals in accordance with environmental protection regulations. If the sludge is used for agricultural purposes, the new harmful substance limit values defined in appendix
G8 must be complied with unless national statutory provisions have stricter requirements for them. * In the new STeP standard, the “Social Responsibility” module contains minor amendments to further improve employee working conditions. For instance, certified companies in the future will have to satisfy statutory regulations relating to a suitable level of maternity protection. If there are no statutory regulations, the companies are encouraged to define their own company guidelines to

As of February 1, 2016, production facilities in the textile chain must comply with new requirements for certification in accordance with STeP by OEKO-TEX®. Before the certificate is issued, the companies must complete an extensive online assessment and successful audit of the production facilities by an OEKO-TEX® member institute.
ensure paid maternity leave in the context of ILO Core Labor Standard 183.
sponsible procurement of feathers and down for the manufacture of their products.
* The overview of third-party certifications accepted by OEKO-TEX®, which is included in appendix C of the STeP standard, has been expanded to include an additional category for ethical standards. In this, the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) has now been explicitly listed as a reference tool that STeP certified companies can use to provide evidence of the re-
Furthermore, another addition to the latest STeP standard is that manufacturers of foams and mattresses can now have their production conditions certified in accordance with STeP. Also new is the need for a plan that clearly highlights all of the areas of the company in which chemicals are supplied, stored, and used. The company facilities must also prove
that chemicals are being transported safely and that affected staff are being provided with appropriate training. Emergency equipment now has to be checked by companies at least once a year instead of the previous interval of every two years. In appendix G of the STeP standard, additional limit values relating to the output of carbon monoxide (G3), sulphur dioxide (G5), and nitrogen oxide (G6) have been defined for waste air emissions from gas turbine power stations.

Over 100 employees use state-of-theart production machinery in three factories to help people all around the world get a restorative and calm night’s sleep.
For over 40 years Hartmann Kunststofftechnik has focused on the successful development of sophisticated technical solutions for a healthy night’s sleep and has launched a succession of clever, groundbreaking products onto the market. The Herford-based company is a leader in the manufacture of standard and special parts for the slatted frame, bed and furniture industries, operating through a series of international agencies. In collaboration with well-known orthopedic and anatomy specialists it has developed durable, top quality products that satisfy the high expectations of its customers. Hartmann Kunststofftechnik boasts a rich and varied portfolio. Over
100 employees use state-ofthe-art production machinery in three factories to help people all around the world get a restorative and calm night’s sleep. Hartmann offers ingenious solutions for optimum sleep comfort and constantly uses its experience and spirit of innovation to bring new, well-engineered components onto the market. One of the Highlights is the new micro spring for mattresses and upholstery furniture, which is manufactured from high performance plastic. Among different hardnesses the spring offers a very good spring reset. The advantage is that the spring isn’t only sold separately. Customers can also
133
buy preassembled modular units consisting of hundreds of micro springs. This offers to the manufacturer of mat- tresses or upholstery easy processing and the end customer profits by an outstanding point elasticity. The “HV 1.1” is the first height adjuster of its kind. This clever device, for which Hartmann has a patent pending, can be adjusted quickly and easily by hand. The “HV 1.1” is made of high quality plastic and bolted onto the slatted frame, which means that it is compatible with all Hartmann plastic caps that are mounted in this way.
The height can be adjusted simply by lifting the adjuster from the initial starting position through its five settings to a maximum height of 26.5 mm, and easily re- leased again by hand. The exceptional flexibility of this device and the active sup- port it provides for the lumbar and neck vertebrae guarantee a high degree of sleeping comfort. The “BFS” bow spring system combines ingenious technology with a clever de- sign. It consists of spring elements and a plastic crosstie that interact to provide optimum weight and pressure relief. It is also possible to create
134
numerous firm- ness zones that can be individually adapted to any body shape due to the integrated hardness adjuster. The exclusive spring element made from the high performance material TPEE is simple to fit while providing excellent resilience and passive mattress ventilation. Further technical details include a bearing block for bolt assembly and a special bracket that allows it to be mounted on a wooden or metal frame. “MATF-F5 / MATD-F3-F4“, the spring elements for mattresses, upholstered furniture and box spring beds are made of high-quality TPE-E and can be supplied in four
different degrees of tension. Both springs have a deflection of ca. 40 mm and a height of ca. 70 mm. Particular mention should be made of the spring’s very good recovery properties. Another highly sophisticated design is the end cap with integrated hardness adjuster from the H 54 Series. This can be easily adjusted by simply moving the hardness slider. The end cap, made from the high performance material TPEE, is available with a 20mm or 40mm bar projection and can be supplied in various degrees of hardness. Like all Hartmann products, the latest innovations use top quality materials
and are both highly durable and fully recyclable. Two innovations that Hartmann launched are the SCH 3.1 and SCH F02.39.16 hardness zone sliders for clamping slatted frames. This clamping option ensures firm and lasting positioning of the slider: unlike the situation with conventional sliders, once the weight has been set, the hardness zone slider no longer slips. “PFS”, “VFS” and “SFSK”, all on display in Cologne, represent three sleeping sys- tems for multi-zone surfaces. The “PFS-System” has the largest possible, bellow- shaped spring deflection of 30 mm at a
135
very low overall height of just 47 mm. Like all systems this is also available in various different degrees of Shore hardness. The benefit that this brings is that the pump effect of the bellows design increases air circulation and therefore improves the ventilation of the mattress. The “VFS-System” offers good combination options for the multi-zone surface of a mattress with the adjustment caps of the series “H 43” and “H 38” and has an integrated hardness adjuster, which permits specific firmness adjustment within the mattress area of a slatted frame with multi-zone surface. The “SFSK-System” is based on the air cushion technology with integrated air- cushion-ball, which has already proven its worth in slat holders. The cushion of air is compressed when weight is applied, resulting in progressive counter pressure to ensure the best conditions for optimal adaptation to the body and restorative sleep. A further highlight is BELITEC®, the motor-driven cabinet bed with high- quality slatted frame and cold foam mattress which can be integrated into every cabinet or room divider with the slatted frame and mattress disappearing into the base and behind a vertical compartment in the cabinet. As well as that, a motor system for electrical retraction and extension, for example for sofas, is also being shown.

Sleep Technology Owners report improved sleep, better overall health according to new research from National Sleep Foundation and CEA
Sixty percent of sleep technology owners say they’re more aware of their sleep patterns, according to the results of a new consumer research study released today at the inaugural Sleep Technology Summit & Expo in Santa Clara, CA. Conducted jointly by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, Consumer Awareness and Perceptions of Sleep Technology explored consumer satisfaction and interest related to the growing sleep technology segment.
In addition to being more aware of their sleep patterns, 51 percent of sleep technology owners say they’re sleeping better knowing the technology is helping them and 49 percent say they feel healthier since they started using the technology. Nearly sixty percent of sleep technology owners say they’re satisfied with their devices, according to study results. That’s an encouraging number for a still nascent technology, says David Cloud, CEO of NSF.
“We’re at the very beginning of this sleep technology wave,” said Cloud. “The pace of innovation in this space is astounding. The devices are getting better and better, as is the value they provide to healthy consumers looking to improve their sleep. We expect that as people learn more about sleep technology and how it can benefit their overall health, they’ll be convinced to give it a try.” “Health and fitness technology has advanced considerably in recent
137
years, thanks in large part to the wide deployment of sensors and ubiquity of smartphones—and the progression of sleep technology is no different,” said Chris Ely, senior manager of industry analysis, CEA. “Led by the popularity of sleep tracking abilities within most wearable fitness activity trackers, our research with NSF shows sleep technology in its various forms is having a positive impact on users’ sleep.” Indeed, according to the study results, forty-six percent of those who use sleep technology say they benefit from the technology. However, the research also revealed a contingent of non-users who don’t think they need it, with only 27 percent reporting that they believe sleep technology will help them be healthier. “It’s a misperception that you need to have a sleep disorder to
According to the study results, 46% of those who use sleep technology say they benefit from the technology. benefit from sleep technology,” added Cloud. “Sleep is a vital sign of health and wellness, even more so than diet and fitness. In NSF’s most recent Sleep Health Index, more than 40 million Americans
reported that poor sleep or lack of sleep impacted their activities at least once in the previous week. Everyone can benefit from better sleep. This represents a significant—and achievable—education and marketing opportunity for the sleep technology industry.” The study results also illuminated another education opportunity made possible by engaging healthcare providers. While nearly 60 percent of survey respondents said a recommendation from their healthcare provider would be important in their decision to use sleep technology, only 18 percent of users reported they received such a recommendation. Given the significant health benefits of better sleep, from improved mood and memory to the ability to maintain a healthy weight, support from the healthcare community could have a critical impact on user rates.

Binding tape: Fabric tape used to bind and close the mattress or foundation where the vertical and horizontal panels of outer ticking come together, providing the edge trimming for the mattress or foundation. See Tape and Tape Edge. Body impressions: Indentations occurring on the surface of a mattress over time, due to the compression of materials by the human body. Bonnell: A knotted, round-top, hourglass-shaped steel wire coil. When laced together with crosswire helicals, these coils form the simplest innerspring unit, also referred to as a Bonnell. Border: The vertical side or edge of a mattress or foundation. Prebuilt borders are constructed by stitching together the ticking, foam or other filling materials and a backing material. Commonly quilted or vertical-stitched. Border rod: A heavy gauge wire rod attached to the perimeter of the innerspring unit (top and bot-
tom) by means of a helical wire or metal clips. Boric acid: A chemical additive applied during the garnetting of cotton and/or other fibers to provide cigarette ignition resistance characteristics. Box spring: Also referred to as a “foundation.” A base for an innerspring mattress, consisting of coils or other forms of springs mounted on a wood or metal frame and secured with a wire-interlaced or welded-wire grid, topped with upholstery and insulating materials (felt, urethane or other resilient materials), and covered on the top and sides with ticking and on the bottom with a dust cover. It is an important part of a bed set since it serves as a shock absorber, distributes weight, and supports and interacts with the innerspring mattress to properly support the body. Box-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised surface finishing treatment where a separate, sided and rectangular encasement of
soft materials–usually with a tape edge–is attached via a welt to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Bunk bed: A two-tiered wood or metal frame designed to accommodate two mattresses, typically twin-size, one above the other. Some models allow the upper and lower units to be detached and used as separate beds. Bunkie: A mattress, usually twinsize, and platform base used on bunk beds. Cal 117: Refers to California Technical Bulletin 117, which specifies a vertical flame testing procedure for bedding and furniture component materials. Foam referred to as “Cal 117 foam” has passed this test. Carbon: The principal hardening element in steel. The higher the carbon content, the harder the metal and the more temper it will take, thus giving longer “memory.” Cellulose acetate pad: Woody fiber compacted into a pad and used as an insulator. May be glued or
140
sandwiched between plastic netting to help hold it together. Coil count: The number of coils in an innerspring unit. Though the count can effect weight distribution, it is not the determining factor for firmness. The count is usually based on the number of coils in a full-size unit. Coils: The individual wire springs that form an innerspring unit. See Hourglass, Continuous and Offset Coils. Coir pad: An insulator pad made from coconut husk fiber, garnetted, needled, bonded and pre-cut to size. Comfort system: Refers to the upholstery layers of the mattress, generally consisting of a combination of materials (cover, cushioning, topper pad, insulators, etc.). Conventional bedding products: Mattresses and foundations in the conventional adult sizes of twin, twin extra long, full, full extra long, queen and king. Convertible sofa: A sofa with a bed folded beneath the seating surface, generally consisting of a mattress resting on a metal mechanism. Also called “sleep sofa” or “sofa sleeper.” Convoluted foam: Better known as “egg-crate” foam that is specially cut to produce hills and valleys, giving gentle softness and more surface comfort. Foam surface treatment is available in multiple
patterns. Cornell test: Devised by Cornell University School of Hotel/Motel Administration. Designed to test cosmetic performance of bedding sets, such as body impression or support firmness. Two round surfaces are pounded into the finished product 100,000 times and checked periodically for failure or changes. Corner guards: Molded plastic or metal, (sometimes upholstered) fittings secured to foundation corners to prevent material damage from the bed frame. Cotton felt: Produced by a garnett machine which combs cotton and other fiber binders into a continuous web or layer. Several such layers combined are called cotton “batt”. For compressed cotton felt, thick layers of garnetted cotton fiber are mechanically compressed to reduce body impressions. Cotton linters: The short fibers adhering to the seed after the long staple fiber has been removed in the ginning process. Used in making cotton felt. Cotton pickers: “Fall out” from ginning or garnetting. These shorter staple cotton fibers are blended with linters to produce cotton felt. Crown: A convex surface on a mattress. Mattresses with a half-inch crown are a half-inch thicker at the center than at the edges. Cushioning: Materials that lie above the insulator and below the fabric covering in an innerspring mattress. These materials are typically combinations of polyurethane foam, cotton felt, and/or mademade fibers. Damask: Woven ticking produced on a loom that has yarns running at 90-degree angles to each other, the warp and the weft. The damask
design is woven into the fabric rather than printed on the surface. Density: A measure of weight per cubic volume, usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Often referred to when discussing foam. Double tempering: Heating of wire components, usually in an oven, after they have been given shape or form and have been electronically stress-relieved. Refers to tempering coils as well as border rods and helicals in a complete spring unit. Dual-purpose: A broad term used to include all sleep pieces, which can be converted to other uses, including: convertible sofas, high-risers, daybeds, futons, etc. See Convertible Sofa. Dust cover: A woven or non-woven fabric attached to the underside of a foundation to prevent the collection of dust inside. May also be known as “sheeting” or “cambric.” Edge guard: Generally an extra component added to the edge of a mattress and/or box spring to give support on the sides. Engineered edge support: A special design where the coils on the outer edge of an innerspring unit are actually positioned under the border rod. Most units have the coils recessed from the edge, which can contribute to a “roll out of bed” feeling. Euro-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised, squared-off surface finishing treatment filled with soft comfort layers and attached to the mattress upholstery at the tapeedge. Fabric cover: Cloth or textile material woven, knitted or felted of any fiber or mixture of fibers. Often referred to as “ticking” or mattress fabric.
141
Fales pad: Compressed cotton felt that is stitched together to better retain compression. Fiber pad: Usually refers to manmade or natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.) that are garnetted, needled, carded and/or bonded together. Often used in quilting panels for mattress tops. Filler cloth: Refers to a plain fabric used on the top of a foundation instead of ticking. Commonly offers non-skid characteristics. Garnetting: A mechanical process whereby short cotton fibers and/ or other fibers are combed into a specific orientation and formed into a thin web, which are then layered to create a batting used as an upholstery material. See Cotton Felt. Gauge, coil: A measurement of the diameter of the steel wire used in coil construction. Wire gauge for innerspring coils range from 12.5 to 17. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. Gel foam: Generally a visco-elastic
foam that is infused with beads or swirls of gel during the foam pouring process. Hair pads: Horse tail or mane, cattle tail or hog hair, which has been processed and curled for use as a mattress or upholstery filler. Hammocking: An undesirable characteristic sometimes associated with worn out or low-end mattresses. When weight is placed in the center, the corners tend to rise and bow in response to deep compression much like a hammock. Terms “dish” and “sagging” also used to describe this phenomenon. Hand: Term used to describe the touch or feel of fabrics (e.g., soft, smooth, etc.). Hand-tied: The process of hand-lacing the coils in a box spring together with twine. Seldom used, this process has been replaced with modern technology and new designs.

Helical: A tightly-coiled, elongated wire used in the manufacture of innerspring units to join individual coils to each other and to the border rod. High-contour mattress: Measures 9” – 13” thick. A mattress under 9” thick is considered “standard”; over 13” thick is considered “custom.” High riser: Usually a frame or sofa with two mattresses of equal size without a backrest. The frame slides out with the lower bed and rises to form a full bed or two single beds. Hog ring: Metal ring used to secure the insulator and flange material to the innerspring unit. Takes its name from its similarity to the metal ring in a hog’s nose. Hourglass coils: Coils that taper inward from top to middle and outward from middle to bottom, thus resembling an hourglass in shape. Employed in bonnell and offset coil
designs. Hybrid: Commonly used industry term for a mattress that combines an innerspring unit with specialty foams such as visco-elastic or latex.
knitting process (tricot) rather than weaving. Designs are printed onto the surface. Lacing wire: Finer gauges of wire used to form helicals.

construction fabrics are produced. These fabrics are produced by garnetting fibers, entangling or inner-locking these fibers together by a series of needles and then mechanically bonding or fusing them together via heat to produce a fabric without glue or binders. Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing process used to produce insulator pads and non-woven fabrics whereby loose, garnetted fibers are inner-locked by a series of “needles.” This process usually requires additional bonding to keep the fibers in place.
Mounting: Attachment of a box spring unit to a wood or metal frame.
Offset coils: An hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helicals.
Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing process for which high strength, lightweight, non-woven
Orthopedic: Generalized term to imply set gives proper postural alignment and support. Should not
necessarily mean hard or board feeling. Proper support with a degree of comfort to contour to the body is best. Panel: The part of the ticking that constitutes the top sleep surface of a mattress, as well as the bottom of a mattress on a two-sided bed. Pedestal-type metal or wood bed frame: A low-profile bed frame with a solid pedestal base underneath each side of the frame, instead of legs. Pillow-top mattress: A mattress featuring a surface finishing treatment where a separate encasement of soft materials is attached to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Plus 4 edge: Two border rods engineered with one inside of the other and designed so that they make the edge 4% firmer than the balance of the sleep surface to eliminate that “roll out of bed” feeling and edge sag.
144
Straightline deflection: Pertains to mattress innerspring construction and refers to the constant ratio between stress and strain, weight and movement. The benefit is that constant support is provided regardless of the weight applied. No bottoming out of soft spots. Basically it means that two people of unequal weight, sleeping on the same mattress, receive the same support.
Pocketed coil: See Marshall. Polyurethane foam: See Urethane Foam. Print: A ticking fabric, which can be a woven or non-woven sheeting, commonly of synthetic fiber composition, on which a design has been printed. Quilting: The surface treatment in which the cover, foam and/or other fibers are sewn together, using various stitch patterns on quilting machinery, including scroll or panel quilters (single needle) and multi-needle quilters.
Stretch knit: A heavy-weight mattress ticking consisting of a top layer, bottom layer and filling material knitted together and intermittently stitched to keep the filling yarns stable.
Resilience: Surface liveliness and spring-back ability. Rollator test: An approximately 230 lb., six-sided roller is passed across a sleep set to determine the structural strengths or weaknesses of the set and components (i.e., foam or quilt failure, breaking of helicals and coils). The industry standard to duplicate the life of a mattress is 100,000 passes. Slats: Narrow strips of wood used to support the coils in the box
Stitch bonded pad: See Fales Pad.
Super zoned box spring frame: A support, generally wood, attached longitudinally to the underside of a foundation for added support where the main body weight rests. Another important structural point is that the vertical slats are turned on edge for added strength. This is extremely important on queen sizes and for 4-poster beds where typically no center support is provided. Also known as a “center rail.” Tape: Fabric material that closes over the rough-sewn edge where the top and bottom panels are joined to the border of a mattress or box spring. Tape edge: A specified type of sewing machine designed to stitch binding tape around the top and bottom edges of the mattress, joining the panels with the border and closing the mattress. Common
145
types include: stretch knits, woven damasks, knits and nonwovens. Torsion bars: A type of spring system used in box springs characterized by square-shaped wire forms. Trundle bed: A low bed that is rolled under a larger bed. In some constructions, the lower bed springs up to form a full bed or two single beds as in a high riser. Tufting: Consists of passing twine, cords or tape vertically through the mattress from top to bottom, knotting and securing the loops thus formed with tufts, buttons, or lacing. The purpose is to hold the mattress filling in place. Uniflex grid: A steel wire grid used to bridge the “mouth” of the coils on an innerspring unit to prevent “pocketing” of insulation down into the coil and to eliminate “coil feel.” Also helps to distribute the body weight of a person. Unnecessary with normal high quality materials used today, except for hospital type mattresses with wetproof covers. Visco-elastic foam: Also known as “memory foam.” Slow recovery urethane foams that are temperature sensitive. They conform to the body and distribute pressure according to body heat and dynamics. Waterbed: A sleep system employing a water-filled vinyl bladder as its primary support system. Original models relied on rigid framing to contain the vinyl components and were known as a “hardside”. Newer styles consist of vinyl components (bladder and liner) typically encased in foam and
made to look like a conventional mattress, usually paired with a regular upholstered foundation. Also called a “softside” waterbed. All versions are sometimes referred to as “flotation beds.” Welded grid top: Basic wire welded into a lattice to which box spring coils, formed wire or modules are fastened. Offers even weight distribution, yet allows some flex and give.
