FROM THE EDITOR
Inter-interzum! That means shuttling between interzums. As many big events do, Interzum Cologne is also held biennially but its foreign version is held in Guangzhou annually. We were there at the end of March and beginning of April to cover the event and to distribute our magazines from our stand. From that interzum we have come to Cologne to do the same things at this mother show. Every two years, interzum Cologne presents the product innovations of the furniture and bedding supplier industry, making the fair one of the most important sources of business momentum for designing the living spaces of the future. The world fair provides the furniture industry momentum for their innovations: The decision-makers, opinion leaders and multipliers in furniture production and interior design are excited about your new products, solutions and concepts. For four days the interzum is again the central communication platform for the industry: exhibitors from around the world meet visitors from around the world - and do good business. We will be there to cover the event and to distribute our free copies from our stant.
With more than 1,500 exhibitors present, it really makes sense to schedule in enough time for the fair. Even those who only want to visit one of the three segments will easily be able to fill two days - especially taking into account the varied event program offering even more to be discovered. 119 Turkish exhibitors will be showcasing their products ranging from mattress-ticking fabrics to felts, chemicals, mattresses and beds, etc.

Kisbu produces fiber and nonwoven for the industry Emrah Kisbu, general manager of Kisbu, says, “As the country we are good at alez production. Turkey makes its fabrics, films and laminations. Established in 1978 for trade, Kisbu started to produce nonwoven spunbond, polyester fiber, ultrasonic quilts and printed products in 1995. Emrah Kisbu, general manager of the company, introduced his products and company:
About Kisbu Kisbu Textile was founded in 1978 by Nedim Kisbu. From day of its establishment till now, permanently increasing the quality of products and service and adding experience, brand become the preferred one in the market. Kisbu textile has started with the trade of polypro-
pylene and polyester fibers and in 1997 became the first company presenting spunbond nonwoven in Turkey. Then the company started to produce materials it needed, thus it both contributes to national economy and produce employment. Growing with its hygienic and high technology plant, Kisbu serves to customer demands. Presently the company has expanded its product variety including SMMS nonwoven, ultrasonic quilting, wadding fiber, and auxiliary products to satisfy clients’ needs.
21
On production capacity and facilities The company has a daily capacity to produce 30 tons of fibers, 45 tons of padding in its production facilities in Beylikduzu, and Catalca in Istanbul, and Denizli. 500 people are employed in the factories equipped with high technology and hygienic machinery.
On its products supplying to mattress manufacturers Fibers and padding we produced are utilized in bed production. All beds out of jell types are made of these materials. Fibers and polyester materials are combed and by combining with other additions they are made as nonwoven inputs for bed manufacturers.
On fibers, classes and production volumes There are two level of quality, one is economic the other is the first quality. There is no standard for both categories. Quality depends mostly on the manufacturers. The materials used, the factory and the machinery used in the production
are all determine the quality level. Turkey is in far higher position in fiber production than neighboring countries, especially our quality. The volume of fiber production in Turkey is not be documented, however it is larger then expected, because we have enough goods more than demand, so we can export some of them. Fiber production in the world mostly concentrated in the countries where beds are produced, because transportation is costly. Vietnam, China, Iran and Turkey are the major countries in raw material and fiber production.
On the production of alez in Turkey We are also at a good position in alez production. Fabrics, films and laminations are all made in the country. Customers of alez buying from Turkey are all satisfied in both as quality and price.
What do you have to say more? As Kisbu, we want to deliver the best product as fastest way and at the most competitive prices. It increases customer satisfaction and repeat sales.

The crowd at Asia’s largest furniture production trade fair, CIFM / interzum guangzhou 2015, held in Guangzhou, China, dispersed as the event drew on April 1. A total of 1,269 industry manufacturers and suppliers from 35 countries and regions, including Germany, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Chile, Finland, the US, Canada, Russia, Turkey, India and Thailand gathered together to showcase their latest wares, which ranged from raw and auxiliary materials as well as upholstered furniture and bedding production machinery to woodworking machinery, furniture textile, hardware accessories, interior decoration machinery, and materials and components. Among the 309
50
overseas exhibitors - 24 percent of the total - were participants from 8 country pavilions. Occupying 140,000 square meters, the event was the largest to be staged in its history, thanks to the organizer’s decision to expand into the new Hall 12.1. “China, as the world’s largest furniture producer, has been presenting varied styles on the global stage, while CIFM / interzum guangzhou, as Asia’s flagship furniture production trade fair, has been committed to building a high quality platform for forging partnerships, and at the same time emphasizing on trade and the strengthening of ties between exhibitors and buyers. For the last 12 years, the event has grown together with the industry and driving the rapid development of the furniture trade in
52
both China and Asia,” said Michael Dreyer, Vice President Asia Pacific, Koelnmesse GmbH, organizer of the event. Expressing his delight at the outcome of the American Hardwood Export Council’s participation, its regional director, John Chan, said: “Overall, there have been many visitors this year and our members here are all very satisfied… We’ve seen a lot of high-quality buyers. They know about wood materials very well, have a certain understanding of our various products, and are very professional. So, this year, the organizers have done a
54
great job in attracting high-quality customers. Both our participating members and I believe that this event is a very important platform, and hope that we can once again expand the scale of our pavilion at the next edition. “Based on our past experiences, visitor crowd usually peaks on the second and third days, but this year, we have already received a lot of customers just on the first day. This goes to show the increase in visitor traffic compared with last year. In addition to domestic visitors, there have also been many foreign ones. Besides being interested in our products, many have also expressed their intention to cooperate with us. Not only that, they are all very professional,
56
and… of very good quality. The management and layout of the event are all well done,” echoed Svetlana Burik, the head of Aristo Trading Limited’s Guangzhou office. “For us the number of visitors is not very important but the target crowd we are focusing on. We have met the people we are looking for, so the results are positive. At present, interzum guangzhou is the only furniture production and interior trade fair I have participated in in Mainland China. From my point of view, the good event facilities also enable the show to be held successfully,” said second-time exhibitor, Patrick Elissen, Manager Business Development, Vita Talalay (Radium Foam) from Netherlands.
58
Visitors to interzum guangzhou 2015 were equally impressed. Attending the event for the first time, Ming-Chih Hsieh, senior project specialist of Aurona Industries Inc said: “Although the exhibition area is huge, the product segmentation is very clear, making it easy to find the products we need, and we are very satisfied with that. Our key procurement targets are hardware accessories and raw materials, so, Area C is our main area. I have
60
had in-depth exchange with a lot of suppliers. The services provided by the organizers have been very satisfactory. “This is our second time visiting interzum guangzhou. We felt satisfied with the show results. Here we can meet the industrial quality suppliers from all over the world. We could reach our regular clients and also meet with new clients during the show. Last year, we made two deals onsite and
62
this year, we’ve closed four deals in the first two days, and they are new business. An impressive aspect of interzum guangzhou is the onsite signage, especially the ones on the floor. They did us a big favor,” said another pleased visitor, Patricia Moreno Olea, administration manager of Evercom S A C from Peru. The PIAZZA visitor lounge located at Hall 14.1 kick-started a series of fringe events with the introduction of the US and European furniture hardware standards and LGA certification by Huang Zhiwei of TÜV Rheinland.
64
The highlight of the activities, an official seminar titled “Behind the Furniture Industry’s Progress – Passing On Technology and Innovation in Furniture Production”, drew strong attendance. During the seminar, Mr. Michael Tsang of LINAK Actuator Systems has a speech on demonstration session of the global market trends of electric adjustable furniture. Subsequently, Mr. Andy Xia of Leitz Tooling Systems shared his knowledge on new furniture processing technology, while attendees also learned about how laser edge banding and high gloss surfaces transform the European furniture market from Dr. Uwe Kraemer of REHAU Polymer Solutions.

XSENSOR in China The company exhibits at CIFF to lead companies to Experience REVEAL Mattress Recommendation System which increases mattress sales performance of mattress-selling companies. XSENSOR Technology Corporation, world leader in pressure mapping technology, is showcasing REVEAL at CIFF, China International Furniture Fair, 18-22 March 2015, to be held at Pazhou Complex in Guangzhou. Reveal® Mattress Recommendation System by XSENSOR is changing the way retailers sell mattresses. The system is also good for consumers to purchase right mattresses for them. The system provides more profits and satisfied customers! It increases closing rates, grows the margins of sellers, increases store traffic and reduces returns. Retail customers gain real-time insights and unbiased recommendations of an appropriate mattress category for
their body type, providing information which helps them to be confident that they have found the right mattress. REVEAL maps body surface pressures with over 1664 sensors showing an image called a ‘ComfortMap,’ revealing pressure points on the customers’ body that can be
relieved by the right mattress. The technology provides the customer unbiased information, and then can be shown the selection of mattresses that best suit their body and sleep position, or in a manufacturer’s case, can show how their mattresses out-perform the competition.

Exclusive mattress fabrics from Sardes Textile Ercan Arslan, General Manager of Sardes Textile, “We care about anti-mold, antibacterial and anti-mite finishing on bedding clothes.” THERMIC thermal intelligent comfort
Ercan Arslan, General Manager of Sardes Textile
Belgium origin bed textile manufacturer Devan Chemicals N.V, serves Turkish bed manufacturers via Sardes Textile since 2003. After USA, China, India, Indonesia and Pakistan, Sardes Textile is one of the prime piers of Devan Chemicals N.V. Sardes Textile works hard to keep up with advanced technology to manufacture, antibacterial bed textile with protecting textile surfaces. General Manager of Sardes Textile, Ercan Arslan said the textile has a significant cozy role on bed production and answered our questions;
First of all can you tell us about your company and your commercial activities? Sardes Textile & Chemistry is active in textile chemicals and textile printing chemicals in Turkey since
2003. We are distributor of Devan Chemicals N.V. based in Denmark. We might say that Belgium is a very old and important home textile producer and our products are preferable in bed textile industry. Antibacterial, anti-mite, anti-mold: AEGIS, halogen free flame retardant Eco-flam, temperature-regulating feature based on encapsulated Phase Changing Materials (PCM): Thermic™ are some of our products.
Can you inform us about your productive facilities and the capacity of production? Our manufacturing facilities are located in Devan Chemicals Ronse Belgium. We import them. Sardes Textile is located in İzmir and we also have a sales office in İstanbul.
74
What is the position of Turkey as a bed textile manufacturer? Turkey is one of the leading bed textile manufacturers globally. It’s possible to find every kind of bed textile in Turkey. Bed textile gives the expected properties to the bed, that’s the reason. In Europe there are many improvements in mattress foam, spring systems and box spring along with bed textile.
R&D projects focusing on bed textile are leading the bed industry. What are the new techniques on bed textile manufacturing? It is true that R&D projects focusing on bed textile are leading the bed industry. Since bed textile enhances the visual appearance and protects the bed, this case is comprehensible. But that is not true that the bed textile gives all the comfort expected from entire bed. Volume of the bed, over synthetic materials containment, ineffaceability causes mold and mites to live and colonize in the bed rapidly. Therefore usage of AEGIS antimicrobial in bed is very important. Besides, the bed; which is one of high volume textile products at home, needs to be finished with Flame Retardant products: Eco-flam™. Beyond these, there are many applications to increase the comfort of the bed. Another popular innovative application is THERMIC® is a patented temperature regulation technology that keeps your body longer in a comfortable temperature. THERMIC® absorbs energy (heat) when the environment or body temperature goes up, storing this energy temporarily, and release the energy as heat when the
temperature cools down. Materials which change physical state at a specific temperatures are known as Phase Change Materials (PCM). Water is a common example of a PCM and changes from ice to water at 0°C. PCM’s change from solid to liquid when temperature increase. At this point they absorb and store energy
(heat). Conversely, as temperatures decrease energy is released as the PCM goes back to solid form.

Nature’s Sleep is excited to introduce a mattress designed specifically to help those suffering from chronic back pain. The 12” Sapphire Gel Mattress is revolutionary and has been designed to support the best recommendations by healthcare professionals, primarily in its unique cradling and contouring capabilities. The Sapphire Gel Mattress has extensive properties that are proven to help alleviate back ail-
ments. The memory foam adjusts to each and every movement you make throughout the night, eliminating pressure points from head to toe. Targeting these delicate pressure points is where the Sapphire gel mattress excels, and once they are eliminated, your back pain will be too. “We are so proud of this mattress,” said Alan Hirschhorn, Vice President of Marketing for Nature’s Sleep. “Everyone knows
that a good quality mattress is better for your back, but this product is made specifically with back pain sufferers in mind. In fact, our founder designed this mattress for his wife, who for years had suffered with back pain. He knew there had to be a more manageable solution to the pain she was suffering. So, he worked relentlessly on formulating a new type of mattress. We are proud to say his wife feels better than ever
78
since switching to the Sapphire! It’s pretty remarkable. We are proud to offer the Sapphire Gel Mattress, knowing that it can make such a big difference in people’s lives.” The Nature’s Sleep 12” Sapphire Gel Mattress has received praise and much support from healthcare professionals. It has an “elevator effect” for the sleeper, offering different levels of support regardless of whether the sleeper is on his back, side, or even stomach. The Sapphire Gel Mattress is
unlike other mattresses because it is composed of gel spheres and memory foam. While the spheres work to keep the sleeper cool through the night by capturing excess heat emitted from the body, the memory foam contours to the sleeper’s specific shape, offering support and keeping the spine aligned. Although we tend to think of proper spinal alignment as having good posture during the day, it’s equally important to do so at night. This is where the traditional inner-spring mattress fails and where a memory foam mattress excels. “We are used to helping people achieve great sleep,” said Mr.
Hirschhorn. “But it’s really special to hear from customers who have chronic medical conditions and are being helped by our Sapphire Gel Mattress.” Cindy M. from Boulder, CO, told us how her Sapphire Gel Mattress changed her life. “After just my first night with my new mattress I was so happy with my purchase. I thought all of the claims of ‘no more back pain and no more joint paint’ were exaggerated. But not so much! All of my shoulder pain and lower back pain is gone. My only regret is not buying a Nature’s Sleep years ago. My life is truly better.”

Huntsman’s new foam technology offers cool comfort Everberg, BELGIUM – In a bid to make everyday life more comfortable, Huntsman has developed RUBIFLEX® Cocoon polyurethane-based foam technology, which can be used to manufacture cool, breathable, flexible foams for bedding, furniture and seating applications. The RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foam system is designed to significantly enhance comfort by reducing the build up of heat and humidity in foam mattresses, pillows and seat cushions, caused by the body when it is at rest. Combining the very best properties of memory and high-resilience foam solutions, the RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foam system makes it possible to fabricate foams that provide excellent support and good pressure distribution – gently cradling the body and minimizing pressure points to maximize blood flow and promote quality sleep and relaxation. With the RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foam system, comfort is further heightened by the system’s unique humidity management properties. Special hygrothermal properties help dissipate the natural accumulation of heat and humidity generated by the body when it comes into contact with mattresses, pillows, toppers, armchairs, sofas
and car seats. Offering a good balance of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments, the polymer structure of the RUBIFLEX® Cocoon foam system facilitates water vapor permeability and humidity transmission. With an open cell structure, the natural increase in humidity produced by the body is dispersed very effectively. Airflow permeability is also high – helping to transport heat away from the body’s surface. Tests show that the temperature build up in foams based on RUBIFLEX® Cocoon technology is more than 1.5ºC lower than in a comparable memory foam solution. Combined, these qualities help support the
body’s natural thermoregulation mechanisms. Foams based on RUBIFLEX® Cocoon technology have a dry silky feeling and work well in all climates. They are durable and resilient, retaining their original feel, thickness and shape over time – despite changes in temperature conditions. RUBIFLEX® Cocoon-based foams also have an excellent wet compression set and good tear strength. Conforming to LGA and CertiPUR standards they meet low VOC requirements. Furthermore, they can be vacuum packed and are suitable for use in adjustable mattresses.

EMAX Mattress Labels attach prestige on mattresses!
Emax Label Solutions is the joint venture of multiStiQ (The Netherlands) and Chiasa (Spain). The company produces label materials for many industries such as mattress, carpet, garment, tire, construction, footwear, sample booking, furniture and advertising. Emax serves to its customers through its factories in Holland and Spain beside sales offices in Turkey, Germany, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico and HK-Shanghai. Although its business partners diverse of industries, the company mainly works with label printers. The customer group of Emax is composed of label printers who look for difference and quality. Recently in Turkish market, Emax has started to concentrate on materials suitable for digital printing
The labels on which design, company logo, barcode or other information is printed are produced of PES satin, nylon taffeta, PP or paper facestock. In Turkey, polyester satin and nylon taffeta face stock are commonly preferred by mattress manufacturers. and plan to be more active on this area in 2015.
Mattress Labels There are many labels are used on different parts of mattresses for various purposes. They can be produced of satin, nylon taffeta, leather or cotton etc. surfaces and sealed or stitched to the mattress. Mainly hotmelt and acrylic adhesives are utilized for sealed labels.
What are the criteria for best performance mattress labels? As labels are important supplementary for mattresses, manufacturers expect durability and printing quality. Then, we should concentrate on criteria to ensure these expectations. Printing quality, back coating and adhesion strength are the most important criteria that secure best performance.
89
If we analyze these criteria; Printing Quality: For the best printing quality; face stock and printer compatibility is significant. Printers can be conventional or digital. Emax has high knowledge of the latest printing technologies and how to implement these on textile surfaces. We coat face stock according to the printer type. We produce almost for all printers which are offset, flexo, Thermal transfer, HP INDIGO, screenprint, letter press, inkjet (waterbased inks, UV inks, oil based inks, HP latex, Epson Sepiax etc.) Xerography, phaser, dot-matrix.
Back Coating and Adhesion Strength No manufacturer can tolerate the fall down of any label from mattress. This is very risky for marketing, stocking, design and legal purposes. An official of Emax explains more: “There are many steps to ensure strong adhere to mattress and prevent fall down. First, we give multitude of specific properties to textile, ensure thermal stabilization of fabrics, make calendaring for improved surface or softer handle. Next step is back coating of face stock. Unless back coating, adhesive can bring up to face stock and cannot be coated well on backside of facestock which leads to weak adhesion strength. Back coating is also must for stitched labels to prevent non-fraying on the edges. Back coating process certainly is an additional cost and abstained by some producers for whom not having standard quality but having lower price is a priority. This is
90
very sensitive an inevitable process for Emax. Lastly, we have to choose adhesive type. The coating of most convenient adhesive is too critical for labels. We have to decide adhesive type according to the mattress fabric will be adhered to and requests of mattress manufacturers.
Adhesive type can be hotmelt or acrylic mainly. Mattress fabric structure is the main criteria to decide adhesive formula. In case of unconformity with fabric and adhesive formula, it is natural that labels will fall down. Because of these mattress manufacturers have to inform label producers about any change in mattress fabric prior to their orders and ask for suitable adhesive l.
Some mattress labels are required to be long lasting and hotmelt permanent adhesive has to be coated. On the other hand, some labels are requested to be come off just after mattress sold to the end user and any residue is not accepted after come off. Then, acrylic adhesive has to be used. In summary; producing the best performance mattress label is a result of best knowledge in textile structure, coating techniques, adhesive and understanding the customer expectations. The expertise in printing techniques, textile and adhesives especially the combination of these aspects makes Emax as an interesting partner for many mattress manufacturers.

beds, coaches, and office furniture. They are non-flare, odor-free and stick in 0 to 3 minutes or longer periods if it is preferred.
On the importance of glues for bed manufacturers Quality control is the first step of our process. The materials then put into process and turned into adhesives. After packaging they are sent to quality inspection and then they are delivered to buyers. Beds are made of many different materials and take one third of the human life in sleep. On exports and export markets Yapi Lider Kimya company exports more than % 85 of its production to 26 export markets including Russia, Egypt, Rumania, Greece, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Bulgaria, Dominican Republic, Serbia, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Iran, Tunis, Libya, Kuwait, Jordan, Yemen, UAE, Turkmenistan, France, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. We load partial or full container loads to these markets regularly. Next year we will be active in Latin American markets when our new facilities become operational.
On last year’s performance We already reached our target in the beginning of the December for 2014 Target so the sales in December is extra additional for us. This year was low loss and we increased quite much our export sales and the number of countries
94
volume. So, 2014 was very fruitful for Yapi Lider Kimya. However, the sector was affected negatively as the first quarter is calm, the bothers due to the lack of the raw material in the last quarter, fluctuation in the currency and its affection to the prices. Extreme competitive is also an obstacle on investments in the sector. The profitability continues on very low stages as the supply is much more than demand and even the exceed on credits for the pay-
ments take the profits We would firstly like to continue to work as a team, keep our quality production without compromise. Besides, we aim to enlarge our product range and to be opened to new sectors to increase our profitability and most importantly to invest to the sector.
For development As you know, we service to the furniture and mattress sector so this
is important for us that the sector has a voice throughout the World. Our producer companies in Bursa-Inegol, Kayseri and other cities should think the whole World. It is crucial that World local companies should carry their visions. What is important for us is to produce and service practical products in operation as quick as possible with quality raw materials, harmless to human health to the furniture and mattress producers.

interzum-Cologne where the world meets A full house and product innovations for the furniture and bedding industries. Koelnmesse, May 5-6-7-8, for the first time opens on Tuesday goes through Friday‌
97
interzum provides the furniture industry momentum for their innovations: The decision-makers, opinion leaders and multipliers in furniture production and interior design are excited about your new products, solutions and concepts. For four days the interzum is again the central communication platform for the industry: exhibitors from around the world meet visitors from around the world - and do good business. Every two years, interzum presents the product innovations of the supplier industry, making the fair one of the most important sources
of business momentum for designing the living spaces of tomorrow. With more than 1,500 exhibitors present, it really makes sense to schedule in enough time for the fair. Even those who only want to visit one of the three segments will easily be able to fill two days - especially taking into account the varied event programme offering even more to be discovered. interzum has been the world’s leading fair for products in furniture production and interior design for decades now. It is the platform for global premieres and a unique
meeting point for the industry, one which in 2015 will once again lead the way when it comes to superlatives. Already, stand area rental levels are 5% up in comparison to those in 2013. One of the reasons for this increase is the extension of the Function + Components segment. In 2015 for the first time, an extra hall will be added to accommodate demand - Hall 4.1. In addition, the product exhibition itself will be complemented by an extensive event programme. Yet another reason the visitor should schedule at least two days for interzum.
98
In each of the three segments, the “Piazzas” represent the framework for the event programme. The exhibits in the Materials + Nature Piazza in Hall 6, for example, will provide a comprehensive overview of everything new, innovative and trendsetting in the area of materials. Those interested in an even more in-depth view in any of the topics should visit the concise and informative lectures. The “Textile Production Line”, first introduced in 2013, will once again be a particularly impressive Piazza in the Textile + Machinery segment. On an area of approximately 1,000 square metres, products like seat covers and floor mats for a variety of car manufacturers will be produced - live! The “Polster + Bedding” (Upholstery + Bedding) workshop will also take place here, with experts speaking on current topics. In 2015, the “innovation of interior” Piazza can be found once again in the Function + Components segment. This year, 3D printing takes center stage, which is why you can see several systems printing live in real-time. The topic will be rounded out by presentations from industry experts. The fifth “Innovations in WoodBased Materials Workshop” also promises to be an exciting event,
99
taking place on 4 May at the Koelnmesse Congress Centre North. Representatives from manufacturers and research institutions in the area of wood-based materials, from the furniture industry and from interior design present current product innovations, with participants invited to partake in open discussions afterward. Matthias Pollman, interzum Project Manager, is therefore certain: “Anyone scheduling less than two days for their visit to interzum will not be able to fit it all in even if their focus is only on one segment. Because in addition to the new products of our exhibitors, we are offering first class presentations, workshops and event areas which will benefit all visitors alike ÂŹ- now and in the long-term.

The youngest in felt production
103
Has been producing felts since 2007 Mitsan keeps investing to expand its production capacity with additional lines.
eldest machinery in our factory is of 2007, the youngest is 2013 model. We invest serious amounts of funds in them and now getting the fruits from both domestic and foreign markets. With all our competitors our industry is able to sell felts to all over the world. We try to differentiate ourselves from rivals. Standards and quality is important as well as the quality of services and response rates. Mustafa Çetinbulut, Board Member of Mitsan
Using recycled materials, the company is also sensitive to ecology. “We have the youngest machinery inventory in Turkey,” says, Mustafa Cetinbulut, chairman of Mitsan, who detailed about his company:
On machinery in factory We have five lines for production, all the youngest in Turkey. The
Homogeneity is important for felts We produce 500 – 2000 grams felts. They are ultra hard, hard and soft kinds. We also produce paddings for quilting. Homogeneity is important for felts. Turkey has a powerful position in the world, a homeland for felts. Main inputs for felts are textile by-products. We make some portion of inputs from recycled textiles, having certificate for this. Recycling is on the agenda of many other industries, including
104
mattress industry. We are somehow in the recycling business. We export recycled materials.
On investments We are investing for automation in our processes. That reduces the need for unskilled labor and simplifies the processes for packaging and transport operations. Every year we invest certain amounts in our factory. This year we are going to invest in both felt and foam production. Automated storage and barcoding investment were completed last year.
On exports We deliver both felt and foams to more than 30 countries. We have more share in the north African markets. We targeted to new markets, because problems in neighboring countries have forced us to seek new markets. Mattress manufacturers have reliable data about the number of felt and foam producers in the country. Markets are becoming more transparent. We try to expand our coverage in the world by seeking new and far away market.

Mattress ticking fabrics push the industry up!
107
Mattress ticking fabrics continue to grow more sophisticated, from the fashionable designs to revolutionary engineering and technologic features.
108
The final component of a mattress is the fabric that is used to encase everything else and this too can play an important role in your mattress. Ticking, once a low-key element, is playing a bigger role in that process as mattress manufacturers compete harsher for position and attention on today’s highly competitive retail floors. This fabric, called the ticking, can contribute to the luxury, performance, feel and durability of your mattress in several ways besides simply aesthetic appeal. They can also play an important role in the breathability of the outer layers of your mattress and aid in temperature regulation. In terms of breathability and moisture and temperature regulation, fabrics made with natural fibers tend to outperform fabrics made with synthetic fibers such as polyester. Some fabrics have special additives to help control temperature and moisture for those who tend to sleep hot. The best mattress ticking fabrics are made of a high quality woven or knit materials that are flexible, durable, comfortable, and breathable and will allow the underlying layers do the job they were designed to do. The world leader in mattress-ticking fabrics Boyteks of Turkey has recently developed an innovative fabric making you feel cool. Named “COOLER, this award-winning
109
fabric and many others have contributed to the development of mattresses a lot. Thanks to its production technology, COOLER, the award-winning fabric of Boyteks. forms a cool feeling and supports the body stay cool thereby helping the user feel asleep and carrying the sleep quality to the maximum level. Boyteks Vice General Manager in Charge of Sales and Marketing, Onder Honi said, “We are continuing to grow successfully with our successful business strategies we constantly pursue since the establishment of our company until today, our adaptation strength to the
rapidly developing and changing world, our effective sales and marketing strategy. Our ‘Boyteks’ brand products have become number one choice of mattress and furniture manufacturers in more than 90 countries. Boyteks was among the biggest 100 exporters of Turkey last year. In addition, we were one of the top-10 firms in Turkey’s branded export. We will continue to be our country’s pride in this field”. Belgian Bekaert Textile Company is a multi-national company developing and producing tactile, stylish and smart mattress textiles that will inspire, comfort and protect you during the night. The textile prod-

ucts of Bekaert dress 80,000 new beds and mattresses every day of the year, from New York to Sydney, from Helsinki to Cape Town. “We present ‘Nite Vision’: inspiring textiles, exciting mattresses and beds, visualized both in the virtual and in the real world. By visualizing fabrics in concepts and virtual reality, we want to inspire our customers and assist them in the development of new concepts, products and stories,” says an official of Beakert. At Interzum 2015, Bekaert Textiles introduces IMAGINE, a novel tool engineered to bring product development in bedding to a higher level. IMAGINE allows to design, tailor and visualize new products in no time. Deslee Clama, one of the leading mattress-ticking fabric producers worldwide, offers different alternatives with almost 600 designs annually. The company won three awards from Interzum this year with their newly launched products. Since autumn 2012, Deslee Clama has launched a new collection, twice a year, with a new look and feel for consumers to discover in mattress retail shops worldwide.
111
Their latest collection called “The Imagine” will be seen at Interzum this year. Bodet & Horst, another leading company in the mattress-ticking fabric development offers entire range of knitted mattress cover materials and spacer fabrics - according to customers’ specifications and own assortment. The company’s Gel Streeetch has been awarded the interzum award: intelligent material & design 2015 for its unique properties. Gel Streeetch is a newly developed material which improves climate control during sleep thanks to its unique gel coating. The material has the effect of pleasantly cooling the body. Up to 30% more body warmth can
112
be dissipated compared to similar materials, according to the company officials. One of the main functions of a mattress fabric is to help maintain the shape of the mattress and to help protect the materials in the mattress from exposure to light, ozone, solvents, or other influences that can oxidize or degrade them more quickly. In some cases a fabric can be the weak link in a mattress and
wear out before other layers of a mattress. This however is rarely the case with higher quality fabrics. Fabrics also tend to vary widely in their “elasticity with knitted fabrics being much more elastic than their woven counterparts ... especially those that are tightly woven. Flexible and durable fabrics are an important part of allowing the underlying layers to form a cradle and relieve pressure so it is important that the ticking of your mattress is both durable and
113
flexible. How it is made and how tightly it is attached will also play an important role in altering the qualities of your mattress. Fabric tightness, like quilting, can also be used as a form of zoning however this too is better done in other layers of a mattress. Fabrics can also be a part of having a more “natural” mattress as there are many available which are “organic” and very high quality. Semi synthetic fabrics like the many types of viscose/rayon materials
and natural or organic cotton are popular choices here. Fabrics can also be replaced if they wear out before the layers of a mattress, as there are many sources for zippered mattress replacement covers, with and without quilting layers that can be used to recover your mattress. This can also be done professionally at a reasonable cost as well so all is not lost if you have high quality layers inside your mattress and the cover wears out before they do.

Pulse Fusion by Latexco wins a prestigious Interzum 2015 award in the ‘intelligent material & design’ category
Latexco, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of latex foam components for the bedding industry, is proud to announce that it has won an Interzum 2015 award for its new Pulse Fusion technology and the resulting product line. The Interzum jury praised Pulse Fusion, which is a first in the global bedding industry, for its innovation. Thanks to the ground-breaking technology, Pulse Fusion products will meet a growing need for customized sleeping solutions.
A world first Pulse Fusion is a brand-new technology that allows Latexco to fuse its Pulse latex foam with any other technical foam or materials, such
117
as gel, without using traditional glue or other manipulations. The key to the Pulse Fusion approach is Latexco’s patented SonoCore manufacturing process that is based on endogenous vulcanisation, from inside to outside, with high-frequency waves. By combining this process with the fine-tuned formulation of Pulse latex foam, Latexco will be able to manufacture strong, durable bedding solutions that provide sleepers with tailor-made comfort levels. The Pulse Fusion products, which will be a global first in the market, will thus meet the growing trend of composite sleeping solutions that meet sleepers’ individual needs (comfort, body weight, personal sleeping profile, etc.).

Deslee Clama won “Interzum Best of the Best” award
Deslee Clama wins three awards at Interzum this year!
Cüneyt Kapaklı, Middle East Sales Manager
Deslee Clama, one of the leading mattress-ticking fabric producers worldwide, offers different alternatives with almost 600 designs annually. Pointing out that they would launch new product to the market, Cuneyt Kapakli, Middle East Sales Manager of the company, said that they won three awards from Interzum this year with their newly launched products. Kapakli detailed that they even received award for their distinct booth design and that the visitors to their stand at Interzum would find good surprises. More details
about the company and Interzum show follow:
Biaxial The bedding industry increasingly pays attention to ergonomics. Manufacturers are investigating how they can optimize their beds and mattresses to provide the best back support and pressure relief for the sleeper. But there is no point having a great ergonomic mattress core that perfectly yields and supports, if the mattress fabric doesn’t follow suit.
119
Biaxial is a new generation of knitted mattress fabrics that maximally follows the flexibility of the mattress core. It boasts superior point elasticity and stretches up to 50% in both directions. The fabric recovers completely from pressure. So even when a person sleeps on it for years on end, Biaxial will still revert to its original shape. If we say our Biaxial mattress fabrics excel in back support, we need to back up this claim with evidence. To do so, we joined forces with the Ergonomie Institut in Munich to measure localized elasticity and body support in our mattress system. These properties together determine the ergonomic quality of our fabrics and also the hotly debated point elasticity. Our Biaxial product range performed superbly on each of the aspects above.
What are the other awards which Deslee Clama won? Double Sided Double Sided is an innovative range of knitted fabrics that can be used both-sided. This makes it possible to create two totally different mattresses with one and the same fabric. Combine two designs of your choice or add different functions on either sides of the fabric. For example, add refreshing moisture management to one side of a cover and warm Merino wool on the other. Mix and match any two types of compatible fabrics, designs or yarns into one Double Sided fabric. This makes it easier for you as a mattress designer to create a versatile product with one single fabric. Double Sided is particularly useful for reversible accessories
such as toppers or mattress covers. Create added value for the end-consumers with novel two-inone sleeping solutions.
Simplify your life and reduce your stock More mattress fabrics you have to order and store, more capital is blocked in your stock. With double sided you can reduce your stock, because with one Double Sided mattress fabric, you can develop two styles of mattresses.
DC Metamorphosis Versatile double-sided knit 3D fabrics that transform your walls and release your creativity. Deslee Clama’s booth at Interzum 2015 will be a head turner. We used our innovative DC Metamorphosis “Soft Pebble fabric to turn our stand into a serene haven of
120
sleeping solutions. The walls are smoothly covered with a 4.5 m high double-sided knit upholstery fabric with a soothing 3D pebble design. Thanks to the stretch of our DC Metamorphosis fabric, it snugly fits around the irregular curves and shapes of our booth. “Soft Pebble” effortlessly hugs any shape without even a seam, a stitch or a fold. It also demonstrates the variety of designs and colors that we can produce on our jacquard knitting machine. And its price is extremely competitive for the quality it delivers. DC Metamorphosis fabrics are not only beautiful to look at. They are also easy to work with. Walls are covered in no time, but the fabric can just as swiftly take down again to be reused. It has a small volume, which makes the fabric easy to store and transport. Last but not least, the “Soft Pebble” fabric used at Interzum 2015 fully complies with all standards and norms regarding fire safety and sustainability

NERTEKS adds value on mattresses with quality yarns 122
Producing quality yarn for the Turkish mattress industry Nerteks increased its capacity and accelerated R&D studies. Pointing out that the sector has been developing in Turkey every day, Muhammed Said Erdogan, proprietor of Nerteks outlined the current situation of the sector and underlined that the quality of yarn is very important to produce a quality mattress adding that Turkish manufacturers invested in
the most advanced technologies at the right time and this reflected on production. Details of the interview with Mr. Erdogan:
What is the role of mattress sub-industry products in mattress? A good quality mattress could only be produced at optimal efficiency & cost with quality ingredients. The objective of a mattress manufacturer is to run his produc-
123
M.Saim Erdogan – Owner of Nerteks
tion at the highest efficiency and with minimum cost by utilizing his machines and human resources. The reliability of the “ sub-industry “ or, the suppliers’ quality standards determine the ultimate success of production processes. It is not only the common parameters, such as hygiene / durability / strength etc. but the availability of the carefully sourced raw materials are inevitable. Amongst the other ingredients such as: Felt / non-woven backing fabric / foam / mattress ticking / tapes / springs ; thread is a fundamental element to finish the quality mattress. The mattress manufacturer cannot underestimate the role of a quality thread; it is difficult to repair a mattress during the continuous production, as it will be costly and the time will be lost. The machines (multi-needle quilting / frame quilters / border processing equipment etc.) run to generate profit if the thread has been carefully selected.
124
How developed is Turkish mattress sub-industry? What differences are there between Turkish and World mattress sub-industries? The mattress sub-industries in Turkey are perfectly well established. Although the history of production is relatively short in comparison with the other producers in the western world; however, the quality standards are second to none .The Turkish producers in various sub-industries which supply the products to finish a mattress have already invested for the best technology at the right time for optimal results. They all source for best raw materials to optimize their own production in fair competition . The consequences of such developments are highly visible which are successfully reflected in the most efficient mattress production in Turkey as compared with many other countries.
What should be done to improve this sector? What are your suggestions? We, as NERTEKS IPLIK Ltd, are highly proud of the present position of mattress sub-industry. This sector already achieved a worldclass reputation. NERTEKS IPLIK, amongst the other suppliers, is offering their thread products at worldwide standards and attractive prices. There are different types of sewing threads suitable for any machine which are the fundamental elements for nonstop mattress production processes. Consequently, the mattress manufacturers are confident that, NERTEKS IPLIK, supply threads to produce fault-free mattresses.
Would you like to add anything special? NERTEKS IPLIK Ltd. is a well-established and high quality sewing thread manufacturer sourcing
the right quality raw materials in order to serve the Turkish mattress Industry. This is a world-class service with the most attractive price levels. We believe that the Turkish mattress industry deserves the quality products from the sub-industries to preserve the highly reputable present position which were achieved during the recent years. We will try our best to maintain the quality standards supplying the efficient threads for the Turkish mattress industry for all kinds of machines.

Every Interzum exhibition, Mert Makina still strongest!
Mert Makina was established on a land of 6.000 square meters in Kayseri in 1994. The company has been producing mattress and furniture production machineries and has been exporting these products to more than 65 countries for nearly 20 years.
127
Mert Makina was established on a land of 6.000 square meters in Kayseri in 1994. The company has been producing mattress and furniture production machineries and has been exporting these products to more than 65 countries for nearly 20 years. Mert Makina has more than 2000 machineries working in mattress production all over the world. Mustafa Nebi Doğan of Mert Makina detailed their operations: “For the first time, Mert Makina has entered to the mattress production by manufacturing the mattress tape edge machine in 1900’s. Shortly
after, we manufactured our first mechanic multi-needle quilting machine. We are one of the first manufacturers of multi needle quilting machines in Turkey. Over the years, we have added step-bystep different kinds of machines to our product range. When it comes to 2000s, according to time’s requirement we have started to manufacture automatic machines. Now we are first and only manufacturer that be able to establish complete mattress manufacturing facility in Turkey thanks to full range of the mattress machiner-

ies under the same roof. Mattress machineries can be divided in 5 different segments like; quilting machines, tape edge machines, coiling machines, packing machines, automatic production lines.
128
Mert Makina has the widest mattress machinery segment in Turkey. That is one of our most important features that we are able to manufacture complete mattress manufacturing facility. Generally in our sector, mattress machinery producers manufacture either spring machines or quilting machines or the other mattress machines like packing machines, tape edge machines, border machines, etc. 1. Computerized Multi Needle Quilting Machine (Lock Stitch- Chain Stitch) Mert Makina is one of the first quilting machinery producers in Turkey. We have 2 kinds of computerized quilting machines for mattress and soft furniture production as chain stitch and lock stitch. The most important feature of Mert Makina’s machines is that they have both strong parts and special software program. Siemens, Ina, Skf, Lenze, Bonfigrioli, that is, our
important business partners, raise the worth of our quilting machines. We offer also panel and border cutting machine that works with perfect compliance behind all chain and lock stitch quilting machines, thanks to its high speed and millimetric sensitivity. 2. Tape Edge Machine (Automatic or Manuel) Manual mattress tape edge machines are one of the most essential machine in mattress manufacturing sector. Manual mattress tape edge machine of Mert Makina is still used from Middle East to Europe, from Far East to America. In the last 10 years, automatic mattress tape edge machines get more popularity. These automatic machines that are preferred by many mattress manufacturers, both sew mattresses in every size fastly and easily and maximize the quality with the edge tape’s smooth appearance on the mattress. Used
parts of machine, special automatic slow down system in the corner, antistatic belts are the distinguishing features of Mert Makina from the other brands. For that reason, Mert Makina’s automatic mattress tape edge machine is the most preferred machine in the sector. 3. Mattress Packing Machine (Automatic or Manuel) In the point of automatic mattress packing machine, we claim that we are the best manufacturers in Europe. Mert Makina’s automatic mattress packing machine which is known and proved itself, is nowadays in using in mattress manufacturing each corner of the world. Our prominence is so high that our customers don’t ask as automatic mattress packing machine, they ask by saying directly our product code “MMS-2200”. Manual mattress packing machine still responds to the needs of low capacity manufacturers or special
129
As a result of the high demand, we have doubled the capacity of this section in 2000s. Now, we are working on transforming the bonnell-coiling machine together with bonnell coil assembly machine to an automatic machine and also we will present a pocket spring machine on sale in the next year. 5. Automatic Mattress Production Lines In the last 10 years, Mert Makina has concentrated to automatic mattress production lines and automatic solution systems. We are involved in many important and selected mattress production project and we established a lot of automatic mattress production lines in many parts of the world. product manufacturers. 4. Bonnell Coiling Machine & Bonnell Coil Assembly Machine 10 years ago, Mert Makina has started to manufacture coiling and assembly machine just to complete full range of the mattress machineries under the same roof. In the following years, we developed these 2 machines according to the sectorial demand and our experience.
We design most appropriately the project of automatic mattress production lines according to the demands from the customers. We sell not only machines; we also work together with our customers such as business partners and share our know-how with them. Apart from all these segments, we produce mattress border machines; roll fabric cutting machines, spacer machines, and spring frame fatigue & grinding machines in line with
the demands from the sector. Our most important advantage is that we are the unique company who produce full range of the mattress machinery under the same roof. We are able to supply almost %90 mattress production machineries therefore we can prepare “KEY TURN” mattress factory projects. For that reason, today a lot of new companies choose Mert Makina. The profit of our customers is also that they have only one contact person for all mattress production machines. They know each other starting from the request for quotation during the full time of using the machines. Therefore they save their precious and costly time. Why do our machines have popularity in the worldwide mattress production sector? Because, we combine the advantages of European and Chinese manufacturers. Sure, we can’t still compete with Chinese prices because we don’t compare our machines’ quality with them. Our quality goes head to head with the European’s. That means we are the best choice who combines best quality with reasonable price. You can be sure that all over the World in all mattress factories our machines are in using. Besides our
130
quality and cost advantages, our flexible and wide after sales services are also a sales arguments. As we mentioned before, the manufacturers from Far East are completely focused on low prices, not on quality. Because of this wrong focus, the lifecycle of their machines is shortened. In the opposite of that we are focused on quality, so we can give long years warranty thank to raw materials with best quality - all electrical equipment from European and iron steal from Turkey. In addition, qualified workforce is one of the most important factor for our qualified production. On the other side, when we look at the European and American side, we see clearly that the manufacturers decrease their capacity and they have to reduce their R&D budget. We forecast that they haven’t anymore added technical innovations to their machines. This helps us to catch their technical stand. In the meantime, they desire our machines under their private label. Even some of them offer us to sell their brands. We know very well that we have some lack about the automation and machinery design but we will become one of the most important centers of mattress machinery industry latest in 5 years. First of all, machinery producer should be known the needs and requests of the mattress producers. During these efforts, we are always aim to get more quality on our machines, these will boost the quality of the mattress and hereby the needs of the mattress producers are answered. One of the most important and also the most costly production
factor for mattress producers – actually in the entire sector – is the workforce. We should be aim always to minimize this costly factor. Our target is to produce the machines with more automation and fewer workforce – this effort leads to raise up the performance and achievement of the mattress producers. This means that machine and automation should be designed to make life simpler – to give you the ability to make things faster, better, wide range of specialized equipment in the mattress industry the conditions and requirements of day. In addition to this automation process, we should consider its design and ergonomic in the aesthetic concerns. The offered technical service takes also an important place to improve the sector. Research and development is indispensable for Mert Makina. Our current situation demonstrates our improvement during the last 20 years. Moreover we have a separate R&D department. To concentrate the R&D workings, we located this department separately
from the production, within the structure of Mert Makina but in a completely independent area. This independent working area is named as MertTech. Thanks to this R&D team, we are consistently improving our current machines according the requests of our customers and the ever-changing needs of the sector. So we are able to work on innovative products, which are more speed and functional. We would like to announce from here we added 2 surprise machines to our product range. These 2 new surprised machine introduce you at Interzum Cologne / Germany in 05- 08 May. In all over the world, the mattress sector is getting more development. Mert Makina plays an important role in all this development. Our geopolitical position, high quality of raw materials and components of mattress, flexible technical service mentality make us successful. By these factors, if we spend more effort in differentiation, we will be unique and indispensable in the mattress sector.

Umit Machinery since 1988 There is a strange story of establishment of Umit Machinery. Mr. Ergin Umit, proprietor of the company had come across with a brochure on his way to Germany. That was the trigger of the idea. Pointing out that their first priority was customer satisfaction, Umit said they served all spare parts and technical services of the machinery they sell. “Our work starts after we sell the machine, says Ergin Umit who answered our questions about their success story:
135
Could you introduce us yourself? I was born in 1944. I completed my education at military secondary school and Turkish military academy. I played professional soccer at Davutpasa and Vefa teams for some time. I quit playing in 1972 and started in the mattress industry with the proposal of Semih Beg, owner of Cennet Mattress Company which was the first manufacturer of spring mattresses in Turkey.
When was your company established? How long have you been active withyour company? Umit Machinery was established in 1988. We have been manufacturing a lot of machinery used in the mattress industry. We are rendering all after sale services such as spare parts, technical support and services by our experienced team at our new production facility.
136
How was 2014 for your company and what are your expectations from 2015? For 7 years we are tax-paying champion among individual companies. Narrowing of customer variety because of crisis realized 7% of our capacity. Our total turnover is about 15 million dollars but our production is about manufacturing a kind of machine which costs 30 million dollars. It is difficult to manufacture machines by machines. Still we are at good condition.
Which products are you serving in the bedding industry? We have a clothing group. We have quilting machines, border machines and sealing machines. We have manual nylon and packaging machines. An upper level includes spring group. These are full-automatic machines. In line with development of technology, the machinery also develops. We have a capacity of setting up a manufacturing line for 350-mattress production with only 6 persons.
Where and what kinds of materials do you supply? Do you import? For all materials needed for mattress machinery manufacturing are available in domestic market we don’t import at all.
About R&D activities Zeki Susever, responsible person for R&D team answered our questions about this issue:
How do you realize your product development? Is it undertaken by your R&D department? Can you outline your R&D studies? In this company, Mr. Zeki Umit is responsible to sell the machines and I am responsible to manufacture them. Developing a new machine is
137
Ergin Ümit and his team (Cenk Ümit, Zeki Susever, Barıs Ümit)
a longterm endeavor. We determine this by studying the trends in the sector in the meantime. We search which machines are needed for what type of productions and make our decisions accordingly. There are certain stages of machine production. Starting from the features of machines we continue by evaluating on mechanical and electronic structure by CAD-CAM system. License research is very important at this stage. It is important not to use previously made ideas and machines. We never imitate or misuse others’ properties. Developing
machines is a long and painstaking work but when it starts working it must be problem-free. That’s why it must be registered at the first stage. All of our machines have been designed by taking all risks such as fire and work security into consideration.
Which countries do you export? We made our first export to Albania in 1990s. We are currently exporting to Africa, Middle East, USA, South America, European Countries and to almost all of the rest of the world.

Elektroteks starts mass production in its new facility Having one of the largest production lines in Turkey, Elektroteks starts production in its new facilities of 12 thousand sqm.
Orhan G端ler, General Manager of Elektroteks
147
Recently engaged in the manufacturing of bed production lines Elektroteks expands its facilities integrating all phases of manufacturing process. General manager Orhan Guler, informed about his company and machinery they produce.
Do you mention about your investments and new facilities? We have been producing machinery for bedding industry for 6 to 7 years. There is a great gap for
148
better technologies. We have emphasized on the automation of machinery we produce. We can offer productive software to our customer. Now we extended our factory to serial production of the machineries. Business is going well. We have founded 7 to 8 bed factories for the major companies in mattress manufacturing within one year. In our 12 thousand sqm of new factory, we have integrated all processes in one location. Earlier we have been outsourcing some of the processes such as painting and heat treatment. We plan to produce new machinery as well.
What kind of machinery they will be? We made a machinery line capable of stitching four sides of the fabrics that was processed in quilting machine. Thus one machine can do three others’ work. We have planned more machinery, but are now kept close. It will be disclosed in the future.
What is the outlook in the field of machinery production in Turkey? We have to avoid the cost based production in order to have a big
country branding all over the world. We are both behind in the fields of mechanics and automation. Europeans try to offer the best, while we try to offer what is the cheapest and need more spare parts. It is not good. Our customers see that we try to do the best and the most
durable machinery, so they keep buying from us.
New facility means more production. What about exporting them? What is your target in abroad? With this facility we will improve
149
our sales in Middle East and in Latin America. We have already been in other markets effectively. We also try to shorten our order cycles for more exports.
How are your activities in trade fairs? We put emphasis on fairs. We participated in two fairs in three months. We plan to be in four fairs including the Interzum in May and Sleepwell in October. Last year Sleepweel was good, we got satisfactory feedbacks and orders. This year we expect more of these events.

Worlwide Mattress Components Supplier ALLBECO became multinational company with new foreign partners
Quality of a product is dependent on its raw materials and the way it is manufactures. ALLBECO guarantees the first part of quality and innovative products; it sells quality and innovative raw materials that the mattress industry needs. Selcuk Varli, Chairman of Board, answered questions about their operations in detail: H. Burak Ayazoglu and Selçuk Varlı, Board Members of Allbeco
On foundation of Allbeco Seven years that I spent in
the bedding sector showed me that the mattress sector is a growing market. In the sense of that I saw material and production shortages in emerging markets. And we realized that companies want to do something new but they are not able to find enough new materials source in the market that’s why they were not able to move out from standard mattresses. We have seen local manufacturers lovely
155
way they sell their products on the domestic market but they could not have very good focus on export markets. Therefore we have established this company to sell local suppliers products to abroad, and to bring new products from international markets to local market.
What kind of products do you sell in the market and how is your sales organization? ALLBECO is supplying all the raw materials necessary for mattress industry. In parallel to the development of the mattress industry we are doing product presentations and selling materials according to domestic and overseas market expectations. Our principal philosophy is to buy from the world and to sell to the world. Of course we want to sell the products in the domestic market to overseas markets in an effective manner would like to contribute to the country exports. Companies use different materials according their regions. For example Africa region mostly produce foam mattress and they have started to produce spring mattress newly. So, when we offer them all necessary materials for spring mattress production in the same time we offer them pocket spring and visco foam which is new for them and next level of spring mattress production. Therefore they prefer to work with us because we give them more than their expectations.
Advantage of natural Products One third of our lives spend in sleep. Healthy sleep has direct effect on the psychology of the people. People mostly are aware of the facts and are keen on their choice on the most helpful product. In parallel of this, ALLBECO has focused on innovative products necessary for healthy sleep. Firstly we signed a contract with LATEXCO company and has started selling of latex foam. Then we have introduced natural bedding materials with local market and Middle East and bring horsehair, camel hair, cocofelts and sea grass pads.
If we will give you a few examples of these are latex foam is gotten with a natural property obtained from the milk of the rubber tree. Due to the its air circulation property, it is allowing to keep always fresh and supporting all body with same pressure which makes medical effect on the mattress. Latex foams has 10 years warranty for its anti collapse property. For example Horsehair, the most expensive mattresses made by horsehair in world bedding sector. Its air circulation abilities that prevent perspiration and act as air conditioner. Because of its property
that gives bonnell spring effect on human body. Camel Hair protects from cold in winter and protect from heat in the summer. Seagrass is aromatherapy which will effect you with its special odor all day.
New products Works We have focused world bedding market closely, The companies will see that easily, when they start working with us , they will know the new product that use in the anoth-
156
er extremity of the world , and they will able to demand it from us. We want that when somebody says bedding components. He should first mind Allbeco.
About export and export markets 90% of our sales are export. Our major export markets are Africa, Middle East Balkans and USA. We can sell our products to all part of the world. It is our global strategy.
Little information about other companies: Allbemac Under the brand name of ALLBEMAC, We are producing classic mattress tape edge machine, automatic tape edge machine, manual and automatic packaging machine and full automatic mattress production line . We design machines that can meet all needs. R & D studies are ongoing and continuous way we design machines that provide benefits to the production and provide operators with maximum efficiency. We’re going to have our machine park to cater exclusively to the mattress industry With Coverconf Brand, you bring foreign capital to Turkey market. What is the production that you will do with this brand? What kind of mattress covers do you produce? What
is the advantage and differences of this mattress covers? Coverconf is one of Europe’s best mattress cover manufacturer. Cases that have production are exported to many countries. We decided to have investment on mattress covers under Coverconf brand in Turkey as moving Italian production technology and style. We want to increase our market share with this investment by offering new and innovative mattress covers. We believe that Italian style mattress covers will get good demand from local mattress manufacturers and this new products will be key to open many new export markets.
On last year’s performance and 2015 plans Our company focused on the advertisement in 2014 and became a well-known company in the mattress sector. Particularly when somebody needs innovative and natural products, they mind first ALLBECO. It was our aim for 2014 and we are successful. As an International company, new investments possibilities are very high for us. And we have always negotiating about new investments. We have 2 more investment Project for 2015. But it is early to explain for now.
157
What are the contributions of the mattress industry to Kayseri? The city is said to be the backbone of the mattress industry. Is this idea correct? Kayseri is one of the most important cities when the Turkish furniture industry is mentioned. The share of the mattress industry in the Kayseri furniture industry is also very high. Being many leading manufacturers of the sector in Kayseri makes it correct to say that the city is the backbone of the sector. Presence of these big companies open the way for smaller size companies and leads the way for new investors in the sector. Besides, the production of raw materials in Kayseri helps to the competition power of Kayseri companies considerably. The mattress sector is a growing sector globally but we, as ALLBECO,
always say the same thing, “Turkish mattress companies should open to the world, should closely follow up the industry in the world, should develop righter and more different products for the consumer. The sector usually dominates on regular products and this makes disadvantageous for the suppliers. The companies should develop their own mattress concepts and should put their distinction forward. This will help them to build up brand value and will make them more advantageous against their competitors. We have to develop our vision globally and utilize right regional and local strategies. To make a long story short, I could say that knowing what kind of a mattress we can sell to China will be defined as an experience obtained globally and utilized as a correct strategy regionally.

“Invest in a good pillow and mattress” “Think ergonomically”
Experts say that we don’t often think about our spines when we’re lying in bed. They emphasize that our sleep posture can determine our spine wellness – and whether or not we experience back pain. “American Academy of Spine Physicians” listed “30 Tips For Better Spine Health” Some of them are as follows:
Invest in a good pillow and mattress: The average individual spends approximately one third of life sleeping, therefore; proper support of the spine and head during this period will strongly influence spine health. A good pillow and mattress will also facilitate more restorative sleep. In
159
some instances an individual may benefit by the use of more the one pillow. There are different types of pillows. When you sleep you do not have conscious control over your body position. A good mattress will support the spine no matter how many times one moves during the night.
Good sleep support: Sleeping on a supportive mattress. Do not sleep on your stomach. If you sleep on your side, place a pillow between your knees to reduce rotation of the low back. If you sleep on your side, try to keep your legs bent at the knees and at the hips, a position which reduces the stress on the low back.
Invest in good chairs: Individuals spend the majority of their lives in a sitting position.
Chairs greatly influence sitting posture. Poor chairs contribute to chronic spine problems; welldesigned chairs promote spine health.
Think ergonomically:
Use products that promote good posture and spine health: Utilize products which support the spine from the ground up. Use support-enhancing products that can be added to poorly designed furniture and seating.
Seek the optimum work environment. This requires an adjustable workstation to properly support the extremities and the spine. An efficient work environment will include proper phone equipment, an adjustable chair, an efficient keyboard and adjustable monitor. The work surface should have adjustable height. It will also require proper lighting. A footrest will contribute to reduced stress on the spine. Assume a relaxed yet supported posture. Kırayteks increases export share Producing knitted and woven fabrics for beds Kırayteks directs its sales from domestic market to export markets.
Onur Kırayoglu, Marketing Coordinator of Kırayteks
Onur Kırayoglu, general manager of the company said that his company downsized its domestic share by 70% to sell more in export markets. He introduced his company and activities.
What are your recent product offerings to markets? We have both knitted and woven fabric production. Recently people demand natural fibers and fabrics and their combinations besides regular antibacterial products. They seek also for aromatic fabrics. We make these fabrics, as well.
161
Knitted production line is composed of yarn preparation, knitting, dyeing and quality control sections. Jacquard, double jersey, spacer, towel type of fabrics are produced. In woven line, we also produce the same type of fabrics in various structures and compositions. They are made of either natural or synthetic yarns made of polyester, polypropylene, polyamide, viscos, cotton, bamboo, Tencel, modal and Trevira materials.
What is our position in fabric manufacturing as a whole country? We are a powerful country in this field. There is a limited number
of producers, among them we are ranked on the middle. Patterns are important in Europe. This is one of our problems. Trends and colors are mostly determined by European, Italian and Spanish companies. We have enough machinery for production, however when it comes to design and trend setting, we are followers.
What is the position of the industry? Recent changes in markets and in currency rates affected us. So we have to increase our prices. Experts are not certain about developments in the future. In general, home textile industry
162
is not so happy in terms of their sales and businesses. We have some concerns for the future.
On exports Every body has debts and investments. If the orders would not started, it may cause problems. For this reason, we down-sided our sales to domestic market by 70% moving to export markets. We limited our clients at ten. It also cost us to export our products abroad. Markets are different from one another. You cannot sell the same product at every market. It may be costly to sell to Europe, because reclamations may be higher than from other markets.
On the effect of Russian market For our industry, Russia is the biggest problem. Bed sales stopped in this market, so our fabric sales. At the beginning it was a promising market. But problems between Germany and Russia have caused boycotts for indirect sales via Germany. Ukraine was the same for us.
On expectations from Sleepwell Expo Sleepwell Expo is an important event for the industry. There were more visitors than expected. It proved itself last year. This year we are more optimistic for the results. The performance of the year will determine the future of the event. It is focused only on sleep and sleep products.
K覺rayteks to promote its new products at EVTEKS We will have novelties special for this year and we will launch them in Evteks fair, Istanbul. In line with increasing demands for especially
the development of touching in fabrics and different alternatives, we have a lot of novelties to be offered to our customers both in special yarn fabrics and special finished process fabrics. In addition, we will have special membrane laminated waterproof but
breathable fabrics maintaining inside of the bed from bacteria and bed smells for hospitals and similar places. Besides, we renovated our general design collection and doubled the used colors this year when compared last year.

Winners of the “interzum award: intelligent material & design 2015
169
The international supplier industry for the furniture and interior decorating industries will meet 2015 once again at the “interzum cologne”. For that purpose the Koelnmesse trade fair opens its doors from 5 to 8 May. Over an area of more than 160,000 square metres, around 1,500 international exhibitors will present visions for designing future living spaces and inspire product developers, designers and architects worldwide. Their goods will set important impulses, trends and new industry standards. The exhibitors include numerous participants in the “interzum award: intelligent material & design 2015”. These companies faced the international comparison and proved their expertise with their product innovations and refinements. This emphasises that the industry has recognised the importance of design as an economic factor for success on the market and is taking advantage of this.
Turkey’s Boyteks is awarded at upholstery & bedding category
The competition is organised by Koelnmesse in cooperation with Red Dot already for the eighth time. In 2015, it received a total of 269 entries from 21 countries. Three different categories were offered to enter innovative designs for the furniture industry and interior decorating: from “Materials and surfaces” to “Fittings, glass and lighting” to “Upholstery manufacture and bedding”. Together with the internationally successful German designer Martin Ballendat, architect and designer Mårten Claesson from Sweden and Birgit Schwarzkopf, owner of Schwarzkopf Innenarchitektur in Düsseldorf, Dutch designer Dick Spierenburg, and Professor Dr Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of Red Dot, judged the works submitted. Each individual product was discussed and assessed by the experts live and on-site. Winning in the “interzum award: intelligent material & design” attests the quality and innova-

tive power of the award-winning products. In addition, the award generates maximum attention for the manufacturers: They are put into the focus of international decision makers. This year, the jury of renowned experts granted the “High Product Quality” award for special design achievements in form and function to 50 entries. Only nine products were honored as “Best of the Best”. This title recognizes excellent design achievements whose form and function set new standards in their industry. This sought-after prize is reserved for the best products only. The goal of the “interzum award: intelligent material & design” is to put a spotlight on features such as innovative design, intelligent details, aesthetics and functionality and to mark especially well-executed products with the industry label. Nine manufacturers succeeded in realising precisely these aspects with their prize-winning products: Fraunhofer-Institut für Holzforschung WKI, Richter akustik & design GmbH & Co. KG, Schock Metallwerk GmbH and OCTO Actuators GmbH (Bionical Design GmbH) from Germany as well as Organoid Technologies GmbH from Austria and Swiss manufacturer Lamello AG. Moreover, ALPI SPA and Arpa Industriale S.p.A. from Italy as well as DesleeClama form Belgium secured the top award “Best of the Best” in the competition with their products. On 4 May 2015, the proud laureates will be honored in the course of the interzum Party: manufacturers, designers and marketing decision makers will converge at the Koelnmesse site to celebrate the high point of this year’s competition and the start of interzum cologne 2015. All prize-winning designs will be presented to the public in a special

where you can get the exhibition grounds in a few minutes. It is almost very clear that the fair will be one of the strongest fairs in the bedding industry worldwide in the very near future. The industry imports a lot, too. Turkey is a good market for machinery, some types of mattresses and raw materials. The first and only fair dedicated to the sleep products industry in Turkey, SLEEP WELL EXPO ISTANBUL was held April 17-20, 2014 and recorded a huge success which almost all industry professionals applause. Now the second edition of the fair is shaping up. Over 70% of exhibitors have already booked their spaces according to the officials of Voli Fair Organization, the organizers of the show. The fair was scheduled to be at the same venue but instead of 2 halls and the big foyer, there will be an extra hall at the second edition, October 22-25, 2015. Stating that the fair attracted a great deal of interest from domestic market and by companies from different countries, Omer Faruk Gorun, Project Manager of Sleep Well Expo outlined, “Sleep Well Expo covers the mattress main industry, sub industry, machinery and equipment. The venue of this important fair is Istanbul Expo Center, which is exactly facing the Istanbul Ataturk International Airport. Outlast received Innovations Award
Outlast’s “Universe” selected as Top 10 Textile Innovations
Outlast Technologies, market leader for temperature regulating phase change materials (PCMs), has received the Top Innovation Award for its cuttingedge filling material Outlast® Universe.
Outlast Technologies, market leader for temperature regulating phase change materials (PCMs), has received the Top Innovation Award for its cutting-edge filling material Outlast® Universe, a blend of the climate regulating Outlast® viscose fibers and downs. FabricLink Network (FLN) has announced its Top 10 Textile Innovation Award winners, recognized for producing exceptional textile-based materials and technologies that were launched in the past year and are commercially available. The awards, presented by the Tarzana, California-based trade group, honors both companies and researchers in categories such as innovative manufacturing and production technologies, novel insulation solutions and advancements in textiles for a variety of markets. Outlast is honored to be included in FabricLink’s list of Top 10 Textile
Innovations of 2014-2015. Amongst other selected companies like 3MTM ThinsulateTM and Schoeller for their new textile developments, Outlast Technologies was recognized for its most recent development of phase-change material viscose fibers blended with down, “Universe”. This mixture produces a filling material that provides both temperature regulation and natural loftiness; great for use in textiles touching skin such as bedding, outerwear apparel and accessories. The Outlast® fibers react to chang-
es in skin temperature and environment – continuously absorbing, storing and releasing excess heat. In warm climates, the Outlast® fibers absorb excess heat and as the climate cools, those fibers release stored heat back to you – working to proactively manage your temperature. While incorporating “Universe” into a product offers added value and performance, it can also reduce the costs compared to using 100% down material. The down adds
183
advantages of loft while the PCM regulates your climate comfort – resulting in a light filling materials that keeps you warm while reducing overheating and sweating. Outlast is proud of the new award for its proactive PCM technology. Contrary to other technologies that are merely transporting sweat Outlast® technology is not a wicking technology. Outlast® technology proactively manages the skin temperature while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. That’s the Outlast® difference. And you will feel this difference also in comfort and hygiene. Outlast® Outlast®
technology
technology was originally developed for NASA to protect
astronauts from temperature fluctuations in space. Outlast® technology utilizes phase change materials (PCM) that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort. Outlast® technology is comparable to ice in a drink; as it changes from solid to liquid, it absorbs heat and cools the drink, keeping that drink at the desired temperature for a longer period of time. Outlast® phase change materials work in the same way. The PCMs have the capacity to absorb, store and release excess heat. This gives any product containing Outlast® technology the ability to continually regulate the skin’s microclimate. As the skin gets hot, the heat is absorbed, and as it cools, that heat is released.
Outlast® technology is not wicking technology, which manages moisture by reacting to your sweat and pulling it away from the skin. Outlast® technology will proactively manage heat while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. That’s the Outlast® difference. The benefits of Outlast® products at a glance: •Absorbs excess body heat •Manages moisture •Reduces overheating •Reduces chilling •Reduces perspiration •Continuously adapts to thermal changes
Outlast® technology works dynamically and proactively manages heat while controlling the production of moisture before it begins.

New Requirements for Certification in Accordance with STeP by OEKO-TEX®
The information provided by companies as part of the online assessment is validated by the OEKO-TEX® auditors during an audit of the production facilities. The STeP certificate is issued after successful auditing.
ZURICH – As of 1 April 2015, new requirements have been applicable for the certification of environmentally friendly and socially responsible production facilities in accordance with STeP by OEKO-TEX®. A list of the most important modifications to the STeP standard is given below: •In the future, production sites certified in accordance with STeP must comply with new criteria relating to their wastewater. The following values are applicable:

•With immediate effect, chapter 4.5.13 of the STeP standard requires all employees to comply with ethically correct behavior. Specifically, this includes:
As of 1 April, 2015, production companies in the textile chain must meet new requirements for certification in accordance with STeP by OEKO-TEX®.
- Companies must provide their employees with a written Code of Conduct which defines the ethical principles of the company and lists corresponding specific directives. - OEKO-TEX® will establish a neutral point of contact for employee complaints from STeP certified production sites. - With regard to the purchase of feathers and down used in bedding or clothing manufacturing, STeP certified companies are required to obtain their raw materials from suppliers who can prove they do not adopt practices such as live plucking and/or forced feeding. OEKO-TEX® recommends that companies obtain proof from the suppliers by means of independent evidence such as the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) or comparable statutory certifications. •The STeP criteria for the company area of “Social Responsibility” has been modified as follows: - To exclude the worst forms of child labor, STeP certified companies must, in the future, also be able to provide evidence of compliance with ILO standard C182. - If the employees of STeP certified companies receive additional donations from their employers, it must be clearly documented. - Medical investigations required by law, for example, HIV tests, are not categorized by the STeP standard as discriminatory, but must be documented and monitored. - All forms of slavery and forced labor, such as Sumangali which is practised in India, are categorically excluded. In addition, workers and salaried employees may use the toilets, drink water, and take
a break at any time within the extent prescribed by law without fearing any disciplinary action. •Banned processes that have a very negative influence on the environment and occupational health and safety will now be listed in Appendix D4 of the STeP standard (“Banned Chemicals and Processes”). Two new processes have also been included in the list of excluded processes. These are: - Sandblasting for the treatment of jeans and other articles. Excluded from the ban are closed systems, provided that the dust emissions at the workplace do not exceed the limit value specified in Appendix G07 of the STeP standard. - The use of thickening agents based on aromatic hydrocarbons for textile printing. •The guidelines for production waste have been modified in the new STeP standard so that appropriate storage areas must be provided immediately to ensure that, wherever possible, pollution of the immediate environment and groundwater is excluded. This also specifies that the storage of production waste must be protected from external weather conditions and from fire. The objective for production companies is to ensure that the storage of production waste has no effect whatsoever on the environment. •In the area of “Chemicals Management”, the list of banned
and regulated substances for the manufacture of textiles (MRSL, Manufacturing Restricted Substances List) has been updated. The detailed changes are shown in Appendix D3 of the new STeP standard. •Aside from the points already mentioned (e.g. the new regulations relating to the distribution of a Code of Conduct, sandblasting and the storage of production waste), the list of exclusionary criteria, whereby compliance with these criteria is a mandatory requirement for certification in accordance with STeP by OEKO-TEX®, was also expanded to include other aspects. This includes, for example, the specifications that each employee must receive a written employment contract, that the company ensures specific workplace conditions for young employees and that the payment of deposits for the recruitment of new employees is not permitted. The complete list of exclusionary criteria is available in Appendix M of the new STeP standard. •The STeP standard can now also be applied to production companies for accessory parts for textile manufacture with immediate effect. More details on the updated requirements of STeP by OEKO-TEX® certification are available from the OEKO-TEX® Secretariat in Zurich, contact: info@ oeko-tex.com.
Mattress Industry Terms 186
Source: ISPA, International Sleep Products Association
Adjustable base: An electro-mechanical or manual bed frame construction that permits the raising and lowering of the head and/or foot portions of the mattress.
Backing: Any fabric or sheeting material that is used during quilting to anchor the stitches. Batting: See Cotton Felt.
Airbed: An air mattress with a core that is an air-filled vinyl bladder. Better airbeds are multichambered, covered with cushioning, upholstered with ticking and sold with a foundation.
Bedding: Commonly used as a generic term for a mattress and foundation set, but may also apply to accessory items such as blankets, sheets, pillows, comforters, mattress pads, etc.
Anti-microbial fiber and foam: Treatment that inhibits the growth of microbial contaminates.
Bedding ensemble: A complete sleep support system, consisting of a metal frame or a bed, a founda-
tion and a mattress set. Bed frame: A metal or wood frame with legs used to support a mattress and foundation. Conventional height is 7-1/4 inches and the low-profile version is 5-3/4 inches when measured from the floor to the bottom of the foundation. Generally a headboard can be attached. Metal frames are sometimes known as a “Hollywood frame. Bedsprings: Open-spring or wire fabric box springs without uphol-
187
stery materials or cover. Binding tape: Fabric tape used to bind and close the mattress or foundation where the vertical and horizontal panels of outer ticking come together, providing the edge trimming for the mattress or foundation. See Tape and Tape Edge. Body impressions: Indentations occurring on the surface of a mattress over time, due to the compression of materials by the human body. Bonnell: A knotted, round-top, hourglass-shaped steel wire coil. When laced together with crosswire helicals, these coils form the simplest innerspring unit, also referred to as a Bonnell. Border: The vertical side or edge of a mattress or foundation. Prebuilt borders are constructed by stitching together the ticking, foam or other filling materials and a backing material. Commonly quilted or vertical-stitched. Border rod: A heavy gauge wire rod attached to the perimeter of the innerspring unit (top and bot-
tom) by means of a helical wire or metal clips. Boric acid: A chemical additive applied during the garnetting of cotton and/or other fibers to provide cigarette ignition resistance characteristics. Box spring: Also referred to as a “foundation.” A base for an innerspring mattress, consisting of coils or other forms of springs mounted on a wood or metal frame and secured with a wire-interlaced or welded-wire grid, topped with upholstery and insulating materials (felt, urethane or other resilient materials), and covered on the top and sides with ticking and on the bottom with a dust cover. It is an important part of a bed set since it serves as a shock absorber, distributes weight, and supports and interacts with the innerspring mattress to properly support the body. Box-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised surface finishing treatment where a separate, sided and rectangular encasement of
soft materials–usually with a tape edge–is attached via a welt to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Bunk bed: A two-tiered wood or metal frame designed to accommodate two mattresses, typically twin-size, one above the other. Some models allow the upper and lower units to be detached and used as separate beds. Bunkie: A mattress, usually twinsize, and platform base used on bunk beds. Cal 117: Refers to California Technical Bulletin 117, which specifies a vertical flame testing procedure for bedding and furniture component materials. Foam referred to as “Cal 117 foam” has passed this test. Carbon: The principal hardening element in steel. The higher the carbon content, the harder the metal and the more temper it will take, thus giving longer “memory.” Cellulose acetate pad: Woody fiber compacted into a pad and used as an insulator. May be glued or
188
sandwiched between plastic netting to help hold it together. Coil count: The number of coils in an innerspring unit. Though the count can effect weight distribution, it is not the determining factor for firmness. The count is usually based on the number of coils in a full-size unit. Coils: The individual wire springs that form an innerspring unit. See Hourglass, Continuous and Offset Coils. Coir pad: An insulator pad made from coconut husk fiber, garnetted, needled, bonded and pre-cut to size. Comfort system: Refers to the upholstery layers of the mattress, generally consisting of a combination of materials (cover, cushioning, topper pad, insulators, etc.). Conjugate polyester fiber: Spirally crimped fiber that is crimped chemically rather than thermally. Is very durable and resilient. Continuous coils: An innerspring configuration in which the rows of coils are formed from a single piece of wire. Conventional bedding products: Mattresses and foundations in the conventional adult sizes of twin, twin extra long, full, full extra long, queen and king. Convertible sofa: A sofa with a bed folded beneath the seating surface, generally consisting of a mattress resting on a metal mechanism. Also called “sleep sofa” or “sofa sleeper.” Convoluted foam: Better known as “egg-crate” foam that is specially cut to produce hills and valleys, giving gentle softness and more surface comfort. Foam surface treatment is available in multiple
patterns. Cornell test: Devised by Cornell University School of Hotel/Motel Administration. Designed to test cosmetic performance of bedding sets, such as body impression or support firmness. Two round surfaces are pounded into the finished product 100,000 times and checked periodically for failure or changes. Corner guards: Molded plastic or metal, (sometimes upholstered) fittings secured to foundation corners to prevent material damage from the bed frame. Cotton felt: Produced by a garnett machine which combs cotton and other fiber binders into a continuous web or layer. Several such layers combined are called cotton “batt”. For compressed cotton felt, thick layers of garnetted cotton fiber are mechanically compressed to reduce body impressions. Cotton linters: The short fibers adhering to the seed after the long staple fiber has been removed in the ginning process. Used in making cotton felt. Cotton pickers: “Fall out” from ginning or garnetting. These shorter staple cotton fibers are blended with linters to produce cotton felt. Crown: A convex surface on a mattress. Mattresses with a half-inch crown are a half-inch thicker at the center than at the edges. Cushioning: Materials that lie above the insulator and below the fabric covering in an innerspring mattress. These materials are typically combinations of polyurethane foam, cotton felt, and/or mademade fibers. Damask: Woven ticking produced on a loom that has yarns running at 90-degree angles to each other, the warp and the weft. The damask
design is woven into the fabric rather than printed on the surface. Density: A measure of weight per cubic volume, usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Often referred to when discussing foam. Double tempering: Heating of wire components, usually in an oven, after they have been given shape or form and have been electronically stress-relieved. Refers to tempering coils as well as border rods and helicals in a complete spring unit. Dual-purpose: A broad term used to include all sleep pieces, which can be converted to other uses, including: convertible sofas, high-risers, daybeds, futons, etc. See Convertible Sofa. Dust cover: A woven or non-woven fabric attached to the underside of a foundation to prevent the collection of dust inside. May also be known as “sheeting” or “cambric.” Edge guard: Generally an extra component added to the edge of a mattress and/or box spring to give support on the sides. Engineered edge support: A special design where the coils on the outer edge of an innerspring unit are actually positioned under the border rod. Most units have the coils recessed from the edge, which can contribute to a “roll out of bed” feeling. Euro-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised, squared-off surface finishing treatment filled with soft comfort layers and attached to the mattress upholstery at the tapeedge. Fabric cover: Cloth or textile material woven, knitted or felted of any fiber or mixture of fibers. Often referred to as “ticking” or mattress fabric.
189
Fales pad: Compressed cotton felt that is stitched together to better retain compression. Fiber pad: Usually refers to manmade or natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.) that are garnetted, needled, carded and/or bonded together. Often used in quilting panels for mattress tops. Filler cloth: Refers to a plain fabric used on the top of a foundation instead of ticking. Commonly offers non-skid characteristics. Flanging: The process whereby a strip of fabric is sewn to the edge of the mattress cover and, in the assembly process, secured to the perimeter of the innerspring unit to prevent the cover and filling materials from shifting. Foam foundation: Consists of a built-up wood slat frame covered with a sheet of cardboard or similar material, topped with at least 2” of foam and covered with ticking.
Foundation: Any base or support for a mattress, sometimes used as a generic term for box spring. A foundation may be made entirely of wood or a combination of wood and steel or steel springs. See Box Spring and Foam Foundation. Futon: A Japanese-style mattress construction, consisting of a cover and filling material, which is typically cotton but can be innerspring and/or foam. Garnetting: A mechanical process whereby short cotton fibers and/ or other fibers are combed into a specific orientation and formed into a thin web, which are then layered to create a batting used as an upholstery material. See Cotton Felt. Gauge, coil: A measurement of the diameter of the steel wire used in coil construction. Wire gauge for innerspring coils range from 12.5 to 17. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. Gel foam: Generally a visco-elastic
foam that is infused with beads or swirls of gel during the foam pouring process. Hair pads: Horse tail or mane, cattle tail or hog hair, which has been processed and curled for use as a mattress or upholstery filler. Hammocking: An undesirable characteristic sometimes associated with worn out or low-end mattresses. When weight is placed in the center, the corners tend to rise and bow in response to deep compression much like a hammock. Terms “dish” and “sagging” also used to describe this phenomenon. Hand: Term used to describe the touch or feel of fabrics (e.g., soft, smooth, etc.). Hand-tied: The process of hand-lacing the coils in a box spring together with twine. Seldom used, this process has been replaced with modern technology and new designs.

Headboard: An upright unit of wood, metal, plastic, or upholstered material, to be attached at the head of a bed, usually with the bed frame. Helical: A tightly-coiled, elongated wire used in the manufacture of innerspring units to join individual coils to each other and to the border rod. High-contour mattress: Measures 9” – 13” thick. A mattress under 9” thick is considered “standard”; over 13” thick is considered “custom.” High riser: Usually a frame or sofa with two mattresses of equal size without a backrest. The frame slides out with the lower bed and rises to form a full bed or two single beds. Hog ring: Metal ring used to secure the insulator and flange material to the innerspring unit. Takes its name from its similarity to the metal ring in a hog’s nose. Hourglass coils: Coils that taper inward from top to middle and outward from middle to bottom, thus resembling an hourglass in shape. Employed in bonnell and offset coil
designs. Hybrid: Commonly used industry term for a mattress that combines an innerspring unit with specialty foams such as visco-elastic or latex.
knitting process (tricot) rather than weaving. Designs are printed onto the surface. Lacing wire: Finer gauges of wire used to form helicals.
Ideal weight distribution: Equalization of support in such a way as to eliminate pressure points that cause discomfort resulting in tossing and turning. Best achieved with coil on coil construction and properly designed insulation and cushioning material.
Latex: A flexible foam created from a water dispersion of rubber, either from the rubber tree (natural latex) or a man-made, petroleum-based product (synthetic latex). Most latex used in mattresses today is a combination of natural and synthetic latex rubber.
Innerspring unit construction (for mattresses): The spring construction used as the main support system inside an innerspring mattress. Some common types are: pocketed (see Marshall) and all metal (i.e., bonnell, offset and continuous wire).
LFK: An unknotted offset coil with a cylindrical or columnar shape.
Insulator: Any material used on top and bottom of an innerspring unit to prevent the upholstery layers from cupping down into the coils. Some common types are: a fiber pad, non-woven fabric, netting, wire mesh or foam pad. Knit: A basic polyester or nylon ticking fabric produced through a
Link fabric: A wire foundation for bedsprings, cots, studio couches, sofabed mechanisms and gliders. So called because the fabric is a succession of metal links. Marshall: A type of innerspring construction in which thin gauge, barrel-shaped, knotless coils are encased in fabric pockets. Also known as “pocketed coils.” Mattress: A manufactured product to sleep on, consisting of various resilient materials covered with an outer ticking. Comes from the Arabic term “matrah” meaning to throw

down. Early Arabs traveled with their bedding and threw it down on the ground or floor at night. Memory: The ability of tempered steel, foam or some fabrics to return to their original state after being compressed or stretched. Mesh: Plastic netting generally stretched across the face of an innerspring unit as an insulator. Microcoils: A low-profile metal spring unit, typically with individually wrapped coils, used in the top comfort layers of a mattress. Molded foam core (for mattresses): A core made of flexible foam is made in molds and used as the main support system in a foam mattress.
construction fabrics are produced. These fabrics are produced by garnetting fibers, entangling or inner-locking these fibers together by a series of needles and then mechanically bonding or fusing them together via heat to produce a fabric without glue or binders. Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing process used to produce insulator pads and non-woven fabrics whereby loose, garnetted fibers are inner-locked by a series of “needles.” This process usually requires additional bonding to keep the fibers in place.
Mounting: Attachment of a box spring unit to a wood or metal frame.
Offset coils: An hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helicals.
Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing process for which high strength, lightweight, non-woven
Orthopedic: Generalized term to imply set gives proper postural alignment and support. Should not
necessarily mean hard or board feeling. Proper support with a degree of comfort to contour to the body is best. Panel: The part of the ticking that constitutes the top sleep surface of a mattress, as well as the bottom of a mattress on a two-sided bed. Pedestal-type metal or wood bed frame: A low-profile bed frame with a solid pedestal base underneath each side of the frame, instead of legs. Pillow-top mattress: A mattress featuring a surface finishing treatment where a separate encasement of soft materials is attached to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Plus 4 edge: Two border rods engineered with one inside of the other and designed so that they make the edge 4% firmer than the balance of the sleep surface to eliminate that “roll out of bed” feeling and edge sag.
192
Straightline deflection: Pertains to mattress innerspring construction and refers to the constant ratio between stress and strain, weight and movement. The benefit is that constant support is provided regardless of the weight applied. No bottoming out of soft spots. Basically it means that two people of unequal weight, sleeping on the same mattress, receive the same support.
Pocketed coil: See Marshall. Polyurethane foam: See Urethane Foam. Print: A ticking fabric, which can be a woven or non-woven sheeting, commonly of synthetic fiber composition, on which a design has been printed. Quilting: The surface treatment in which the cover, foam and/or other fibers are sewn together, using various stitch patterns on quilting machinery, including scroll or panel quilters (single needle) and multi-needle quilters.
Stretch knit: A heavy-weight mattress ticking consisting of a top layer, bottom layer and filling material knitted together and intermittently stitched to keep the filling yarns stable.
Resilience: Surface liveliness and spring-back ability. Rollator test: An approximately 230 lb., six-sided roller is passed across a sleep set to determine the structural strengths or weaknesses of the set and components (i.e., foam or quilt failure, breaking of helicals and coils). The industry standard to duplicate the life of a mattress is 100,000 passes. Rollaway bed/cot: A portable metal bed/cot with a frame that folds in half with the mattress when not in use so it can be rolled away into a closet (or elsewhere) for compact storage. Sheeting: a woven or non-woven fabric other than knits that have a degree of sizing and are somewhat stiff.
spring frame. Also used in a bedstead to support the box spring. Sleep Products Safety Council hangtag: Used voluntarily by bedding producers since 1987, the safety hangtag program provides critical consumer information about the safe use of sleep products. Manufacturers certify that they use the tag only on mattresses that meet the Federal Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads. The tag is available in a hangtag or permanent label. Smooth top: A plain surfaced mattress, neither tufted nor quilted. Also called button-free.
Side rail: A metal or wood rail, which hooks into the outside edges of a headboard and footboard to provide the support base for a foundation and mattress.
Spring wire: Wire made from high carbon steel, characterized by toughness, strength and ductility. Typically furnished in 8 to 18 gauge for bedding industry applications.
Sisal: A product of the henequen plant formed into a pad and used as an insulator. Named after the. small port of Sisal in Yucatan.
Steel unit construction (for box springs): The spring construction used as the main support system inside a box spring.
Slats: Narrow strips of wood used to support the coils in the box
Stitch bonded pad: See Fales Pad.
Super zoned box spring frame: A support, generally wood, attached longitudinally to the underside of a foundation for added support where the main body weight rests. Another important structural point is that the vertical slats are turned on edge for added strength. This is extremely important on queen sizes and for 4-poster beds where typically no center support is provided. Also known as a “center rail.” Tape: Fabric material that closes over the rough-sewn edge where the top and bottom panels are joined to the border of a mattress or box spring. Tape edge: A specified type of sewing machine designed to stitch binding tape around the top and bottom edges of the mattress, joining the panels with the border and closing the mattress. Tempering: Heat treatment of wire to reduce brittleness. Accomplished by electric charge, oven heat or both. Also known as “stress relieved”. Ticking: Fabrics for covering mattresses and foundations. Common
193
types include: stretch knits, woven damasks, knits and nonwovens. Torsion bars: A type of spring system used in box springs characterized by square-shaped wire forms. Trundle bed: A low bed that is rolled under a larger bed. In some constructions, the lower bed springs up to form a full bed or two single beds as in a high riser. Tufting: Consists of passing twine, cords or tape vertically through the mattress from top to bottom, knotting and securing the loops thus formed with tufts, buttons, or lacing. The purpose is to hold the mattress filling in place. Uniflex grid: A steel wire grid used to bridge the “mouth” of the coils on an innerspring unit to prevent “pocketing” of insulation down into the coil and to eliminate “coil feel.” Also helps to distribute the body weight of a person. Urethane foam: Synthetic (chemically foamed) flexible urethane used for mattress cores and as a
cushioning material. As a core, it’s the main support system. Generic term covering both polyester and polyether foams. Ventilator: Metal or plastic screens attached to the sides and sometimes the ends of mattresses to permit the passage of air. Unnecessary with normal high quality materials used today, except for hospital type mattresses with wetproof covers. Visco-elastic foam: Also known as “memory foam.” Slow recovery urethane foams that are temperature sensitive. They conform to the body and distribute pressure according to body heat and dynamics. Waterbed: A sleep system employing a water-filled vinyl bladder as its primary support system. Original models relied on rigid framing to contain the vinyl components and were known as a “hardside”. Newer styles consist of vinyl components (bladder and liner) typically encased in foam and
made to look like a conventional mattress, usually paired with a regular upholstered foundation. Also called a “softside” waterbed. All versions are sometimes referred to as “flotation beds.” Welded grid top: Basic wire welded into a lattice to which box spring coils, formed wire or modules are fastened. Offers even weight distribution, yet allows some flex and give. Wood bed: A bed with a headboard and footboard made of wood, having side rails of wood or metal that support the foundation and mattress. Wood frame (for box springs): The wood frame in a box spring on which the spring construction is mounted. Woven stripe: A once ubiquitous woven ticking with colored stripes. The style was referred to as “ACA”, the traditional designation for the 8 oz. blue- and white-striped ticking that has mostly fallen out of favor and is seldom produced.
