FROM THE EDITOR
Do better, feel better, sleep better… Progressing on the way to be a world supplier of sleep products Turkey has been improving its mattress and other related parts of bedding industry. The country has some respectful names selling mattresses, mattress ticking fabrics and other items of the industry to all parts of the world including the nations you have never heard of. The variety of sleep products of Turkey is also very wide ranging from fabrics, wires, felts, foams, springs, chemicals, all kinds of raw materials and accessories up to machinery lines. Sleep Well magazine is proud of promoting this industry around the world and playing the role of communication between the industry members in Turkey. Raw material suppliers and mattress manufacturers find each other usually through Sleep Well and Sleep Tech magazines. The most impressive and influential platform to bring all related parties together is perhaps Sleep Well Expo held in Istanbul and supported by these two sister publications. The magazines are in Germany this January as has been the case for many years. We will be in Frankfurt first for Heimtextil to give out free copies from our booth at Galleria. The second destination will be Domotex in Hannover and we will end up with IMM held in Cologne. These three shows are always interconnected. The last day of one becomes the opening day of the other in order to make it easy and practical for industry professionals to see all. It is a wise idea of course to relate them in a way to be convenient for visitors. We will be at all as always and as the only magazine group from Turkey. We hope that the new year brings all kinds of happiness and success for all!

Foreign investors coming back to Turkey, says minister Investment perceptions about Turkey have started to become positive again and funds are flowing back into the country, Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek has said after a series of meetings with foreign investors. “A large volume of funds has started to flow into Turkey. I see a huge demand from investors regarding Turkey,” Şimşek said. The recent decline in oil prices has had a positive effect on the Turkish economy, as the country is highly dependent on foreign energy sources, he added. “Our energy imports were worth around $9 billion in 2002, but they increased to $60 billion a few years ago. This was too much for us, so the recent decrease in oil prices will very positively affect Turkey’s economic outlook and eco-
nomic performance,” Şimşek said. He added that he expects Turkey’s current account deficit to decrease to 5.7 percent of GDP, although the deficit has yet to start seeing the effect of decreasing oil prices. “If oil prices decrease around $70 permanently, we would see our current account deficit fall by $15 billion … We cannot, however, rely on just the decreasing trend in oil prices. We must do more,” Şimşek added, noting that the government had already started a detailed reform program to encourage more added-value production and savings. The reform program, which was announced by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu will enable Turkey to lure more investments, the finance minister suggested.
Şimşek also noted that holding the current G-20 term presidency marks a “big step” for Turkey. “Turkey represents a good example for G-20 countries. We have announced and started to implement a detailed reform package that our deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan worked on for a long time,” he said. Turkey recently took over the presidency of the G-20 group of developed and major developing economic countries from Australia. Turkey announced at the G-20 Summit in Brisbane last month that its priorities would be investment, energy, trade, participatory development, climate change, SMEs and integrating developing countries into the world economy.

Turkey’s business leaders want G20 to focus on eco-friendly growth ISTANBUL – Promoting sustainable and eco-friendly growth should be among the priority issues on the agenda of the next G20 summit, to be held in Turkey, business leaders have said. A global survey initiated by the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD) to define the private sector’s priorities has also revealed the importance of the fight against corruption, as it shows business leaders think improving anti-corruption efforts should be among the top issues to be discussed at the G20 summit. As Turkey will take over the G20 presidency in 2015, TÜSİAD commissioned Ernst and Young to conduct the survey among business leaders from six G20 countries (Brazil, France, India, Turkey, the U.K. and the U.S.), with a special focus
on the increasing role of emerging markets. Promoting sustainable and eco-friendly growth, developing human capital and promoting employment appeared as the highest rated priorities in both developed and emerging markets. Improving anti-corruption efforts and enhancing and better distributing global welfare come in as the third and fourth priorities, yet their relative importance differs to some extent in emerging and developed markets. Fighting against corruption is more applauded in developed markets than in emerging ones, but the latter puts more emphasis on enhancing global welfare. A difference also appears between emerging and developed markets when it comes to policies to be adopted, which have been placed
into two categories: governance and control (G and C), and entrepreneurship and innovation (E and I). Removing bureaucratic barriers and promoting ease of doing business, which is under the category of G and C, is the highest rated policy. Providing easier access to financing for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is categorized as E and I. Assuring transparency and fairness in government procurements and approvals fall under G and C, and supporting renewable energy production, which fall under E and I, are other high-priority policies for the business community. Emerging markets tend to prioritize policies under the category of G and C, while developed markets emphasize E and I more.

Turkey to build tax-free industrial zone in Palestine
ISTANBUL - Anadolu Agency Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Işık and Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister and National Economy Minister Mohammed Mostafa signed the deal on Nov. 26. AA Photo
Turkey plans to build an organized industrial zone in the Palestinian city of Jenin in the West Bank, according to a new memorandum of understanding.
“Investors will not pay any taxes. Moreover, they will be getting significant support from Turkey, Germany and the U.S.,” Şekeroğlu said.
Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Işık and Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister and National Economy Minister Mohammed Mostafa signed the deal late on Nov. 26.
The goods produced in the zone will be available for export to world markets, including Germany, France, Saudi Arabia and the U.S., without any duties or quotas, he said.
“This will not only be an organized industrial zone, but a free zone as well, offering unique advantages to all investors, whether they are Turkish, Palestinian or other,” Ahmet Şekeroğlu, board chairman of TOBBBIS Inc., told Anadolu Agency.
“The businesses will be insured by the World Bank, too,” he added.
The zone is going to be constructed by TOBB-BIS Inc., an affiliate of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB).
Işık said the TOBB project would allow Turkey and Palestine to build and operate further industrial zones across Palestine, as well as increase corporate capacity. “Within this framework, we will be sharing our know-how and 50 years of experience through training pro-
grams and workshops in Turkey,” he said. Another goal is to bring the legal framework and corporate capacity currently established in Palestine up to international standards, he added. Mostafa said Palestine needed a strong economy to be totally independent. “Palestine should be restructured and Palestinians should be provided adequate job opportunities,” he said, adding that industrialization was significant in this regard. The Jenin Organized Industry Zone is slated to be built on an area of 920,000 square meters, just 30 kilometers from Israel’s Haifa Port and the Jordan-Palestine border, according to TOBB.

Moody’s forecasts Turkey to grow 2.8 percent
An eventual interest rate hike by the U.S. Federal Reserve could threaten Turkish economic growth, a Moody’s analyst said.
tal, high inflation and high interest rates, all of which are expected to dampen both domestic consumption and investment activity.”
“Turkey’s growth model is largely dependent on external financing and a rate hike from the U.S. Federal Reserve could reduce that inflow of capital,” said Alpona Banerji, Moody’s senior Turkey analyst, in an interview with Anadolu Agency ahead of the release of Moody’s Turkey report on Dec. 5.
Turkey has to make structural reforms to improve economic performance and increase growth, Banerji added.
“The challenges associated with the interest rate hike by the U.S. Federal Reserve expected 2015 will exacerbate the Turkish economy’s vulnerability to shocks,” Banerji said. “Economic growth in Turkey is unlikely to increase this year, given lower inflows of capi-
that could change.
Moody’s has forecast Turkey to grow 2.8 percent in 2015
“A hike in interest rates should have limited implications for emerging market economies or sovereigns. However, we saw in 2013 and earlier this year how events can exceed expectations, prompting yield rises, exchange rate pressures and reversals in capital flows.” Wilson said.
In its last report, Moody’s had estimated Turkey’s growth performance to hover between 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent in 2014 and in 2015.
“Should those conditions recur, the impact would be felt most keenly in those economies that are most dependent on external capital, such as Turkey,” he added.
Another senior economist from Moody’s, Global Sovereign Risk Group head Alastair Wilson, said Moody’s expected U.S. interest rate hikes to have limited implications for emerging markets, but
After raising Turkey’s sovereign rating to investment grade on May 16, 2013, Moody’s has downgraded the outlook of country’s debt to “negative,” but kept the overall rating at investment grade.

Turkey’s new economic action plans to boost savings ANKARA – Shortly after announcing the first nine programs of a detailed economic transformation plan, the Turkish Government has announced an additional set of macro-economic reforms, with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu putting particular emphasis on the need to reduce public expenditures.
“The latest growth figures have been below our expectations … However, it is a performance that has been appreciated in general,” Davutoğlu said, recalling that Turkey’s gross domestic product (GDP) had grown 1.7 percent year-onyear in the third quarter of 2014, according to official data released , sharply below forecasts that had predicted growth of around 3 percent. Speaking at a press conference accompanied by seven members of his Cabinet, Davutoğlu announced a second stage of economic action plans. The measures comprised various prioritized structural reforms, including increasing domestic savings at the national level, preventing wastefulness, rationalizing public expenditure, raising the quality of public revenue, improving the business and investment climate, and developing statistical information on infrastructure. “From now on, when I make initial visits to a place, none of the local administrations, governorates or other institutions will present me with a plaque or a gift,” Davutoğlu
said, striking an austere tone. “Packages or gifts that are just waste and aimed at celebrating a person will not exist in the public [sector] from now on,” he added. “If a gift is to be presented, then planting a tree may be the gift and it may be announced that those trees have been planted in that region on behalf of the visiting person. This would be enough,” Davutoğlu said. Also speaking at the same press conference, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan drew attention to how new zoning plans and amendments in zoning plans have recently led to considerable unearned revenue in the construction sector, calling for “fairness” in the determination of rental prices. The government has begun a study to provide equal opportunities and
justice, and to determine the rent that the state should request on state-owned land, Babacan said at the same meeting. “The construction sector is a field where rents [unearned revenues] develop out of nowhere. We will imminently implement a study that will provide equal opportunity in this area. What matters here is being able to secure justice,” he said. “There is a need for emphasis in order to avoid misunderstandings. The construction sector is a sector that is important for Turkey and has open prospects. In the upcoming period, we expect to see a rise in the sector’s share of national income. However, while this sector develops, revenues need to be taxed and unfair revenues need to be prevented. This is the essence of our study,” the deputy prime minister added.

We will see a bigger and more effective interzum this year! Recording an increase in exhibitors from abroad Koelnmesse is expecting an increase in exhibition space too.
29
The international supply sector of the furniture and interior construction industry will meet in Cologne at interzum from 5 - 8 May 2015. It is expected that over 1,550 companies from more than 60 countries will present their innovative products for the furniture supply and interiors industry to the public. The world’s leading trade fair takes places over four days and a visit to a fair which only takes place once every two years should be planned well in advance so that it is as productive as possible.
Five months before the next edition of interzum, the event has recorded an increase of over 6 per cent in registration levels compared to 2013 figures. Exhibitors in 2015 will include returning and new companies, as well as companies from countries which have never taken part before. Project Manager Matthias Pollmann reports very good initial figures for interzum 2015 and sees these early positive results as confirmation of the status of the leading fair for the furniture supply and interior construction industry.
30
There are still five months to go before the world’s leading fair in furniture supply begins in early May 2015. Koelnmesse has received around 1000 registrations to date representing an increase of over 6% in early registrations. This year, the early bird offer which finished at the beginning of June attracted more companies than at earlier editions of the fair. Matthias Pollmann, Project Manager at interzum thinks there are two reasons for this: “The binding registration at that early stage gives many companies the opportunity for long-term planning. This means that these exhibitors have sufficient time to develop their stand concept and their strategic communication regarding their participation in the fair. Pollmann estimates that the present registration levels could mean a slight increase in the exhibition area of interzum 2015: over 90 per
31
32
cent of the area currently available is already reserved. This comes as no surprise to Koelnmesse, however. “In an exhibitor survey carried out immediately after the fair’s 2013 edition, 81 per cent of exhibitors planned to return in 2015,” says Pollmann. But not all the current registrations are coming from companies which took part in 2013. Koelnmesse is delighted to welcome brand new exhibitors like Tesa to interzum 2015. New countries are also demonstrating interest - in 2015, interzum will welcome its first ever exhibitors from Columbia. Overall, Koelnmesse is expecting an increase in the fair’s international character, in its exhibitors but also in its visitors. “interzum is the world’s leading fair in the furniture supply and interior construction industry. In 2015, we are confident that the fair will once again live up to its high standards,” says Pollmann. Messe Koeln has made considerable efforts on visiting the fair by as many professionals as ever. Anyone invited to visit the fair by an exhibitor using an admission ticket voucher can even visit the fair free of charge! All tickets also serve as a free travel card for buses, suburban railway lines, metropolitan underground train services and Deutsche Bahn commuter trains on the public transport network in the extended Rhein-Sieg (VRS) region Verkehrsverbundes Rhein-Sieg (VRS). The stand fee payable by the exhibitor has been increased by 8 Euro per sqm to cover the cost of the admission ticket vouchers. Thanks to this obligatory contribution to costs, the exhibitor can order as many vouchers as required. A service which will help small and large companies alike reach as many clients as possible.

Allbeco brings foreign capital to Turkey with new investment‌ Quality of a product is dependent on its raw materials and the way it is manufactures. ALLBECO guarantees the first part of quality and innovative products; it sells quality and innovative raw materials that the mattress industry needs. Selcuk Varli, Chairman of Board, answered questions about their operations in detail:
On foundation of Allbeco
Selcuk VarlÄą Managing Director of Allbeco
Seven years that I spent in the bedding sector showed me that the mattress sector is a growing market. In the sense of that I saw material and production shortages in emerging markets. And we realized that companies want to do something new but they are not able to find enough new materials source in the market that’s why
they were not able to move out from standard mattresses. We have seen local manufacturers lovely way they sell their products on the domestic market but they could not have very good focus on export markets. Therefore we have established this company to sell local suppliers products to abroad, and to bring new products from international markets to local market.
What kind of products do you sell in the market and how is your sales organization? ALLBECO is supplying all the raw materials necessary for mattress industry. In parallel to the development of the mattress industry we are doing product presentations and selling materials according
39
to domestic and overseas market expectations. Our principal philosophy is to buy from the world and to sell to the world. Of course we want to sell the products in the domestic market to overseas markets in an effective manner would like to contribute to the country exports. Companies use different materials according their regions. For example Africa region mostly produce foam mattress and they have started to produce spring mattress newly. So, when we offer them all necessary materials for spring mattress production in the same time we offer them pocket spring and visco foam which is new for them and next level of spring mattress production. Therefore they prefer to work with us because we give them more than their expectations.
Advantage of natural Products One third of our lives spend in sleep. Healthy sleep has direct effect on the psychology of the people. People mostly are aware of the facts and are keen on their choice on the most helpful product. In parallel of this, ALLBECO has focused on innovative products necessary for healthy sleep. Firstly we signed a contract with LATEXCO company and has started selling of latex foam. Then we have introduced natural bedding materials with local market and Middle East and bring horsehair, camel hair, cocofelts and sea grass pads. If we will give you a few examples of these are latex foam is gotten with a natural property obtained from the milk of the rubber tree. Due to the its air circulation prop-
erty, it is allowing to keep always fresh and supporting all body with same pressure which makes medical effect on the mattress. Latex foams has 10 years warranty for its anti collapse property. For example Horsehair, the most expensive mattresses made by horsehair in world bedding sector. Its air circulation abilities that prevent perspiration and act as air conditioner. Because of its property that gives bonnell spring effect on human body. Camel Hair protects from cold in winter and protect from heat in the summer. Seagrass is aromatherapy which will effect you with its special odor all day.

New products Works We have focused world bedding market closely, The companies will see that easily, when they start working with us , they will know the new product that use in the another extremity of the world , and they will able to demand it from us. We want that when somebody says bedding components. He should first mind Allbeco.
About export and export markets 90% of our sales are export. Our major export markets are Africa, Middle East Balkans and USA. We can sell our products to all part of the world. It is our global strategy.
Little information about other companies: Allbemac Under the brand name of ALLBEMAC, We are producing classic mattress tape edge machine, automatic tape edge machine, manual and automatic packaging machine and full automatic mattress production line . We design machines that can meet all needs. R & D studies are ongoing and continuous way we design machines that provide benefits to the production and provide operators with maximum efficiency. With Coverconf Brand, you bring foreign capital to Turkey market. What is the production that you will do with this brand? What kind of mattress covers do you produce? What is the advantage and differences of this mattress covers? Coverconf is one of Europe’s best mattress cover manufacturer. Cases that have production are exported to many countries. We decided to have investment on mattress covers under Coverconf brand in Turkey as moving Italian production technology and style. We want to increase our market share with this investment by offering new and innovative mattress covers. We believe that Italian style mattress covers will get good demand from local mattress manufacturers and this new products will be key to open many new export markets.
On last year’s performance and 2015 plans Our company focused on the advertisement in 2014 and became a well-known company in the mattress sector. World Bank: Turkey near to becoming high-income economy
ANKARA – A new World Bank report on Turkey has claimed that “integration and inclusion” have dominated the country’s economic development over the past three decades. According to the organization’s report “Turkey’s Transitions: Integration, Inclusion, Institutions,” steady growth over the past 30 years has brought the country to the threshold of becoming a high-income economy.
“Prosperity has been broadly shared across income groups in the society, and the size of the middle-class was doubled,” the report claims.

The document examines Turkey’s experience in transitioning from a lower middle-income to an upper middle-income economy, and looks at what has worked well and what needs to change.

According to the report, Turkey’s economic integration – both in

Moreover, Turkey used the opportunity of a deep financial crisis over a decade ago to reform its banks and its public finances – alfrom debt service to public service.
44
The report also says that economic progress in the country has been socially inclusive as poverty has been reduced by more than half, and access to high-quality health, education and municipal services has expanded. “Turkey has yet to establish the institutional prerequisites of a high-income economy. In a less-forgiving global economic context, the risk of the so-called ‘middle-income trap’ looms for countries that let off on their reform efforts. For Turkey to complete the transition to a high-income economy, improvements in the rule of law, in public accountability and transparency, and in the climate for
entrepreneurship and innovation will be needed,” the report warns. “Turkey is undergoing multiple transitions en route to a high-income economy, some more advanced than others,” World Bank director for Turkey, Martin Raiser, said. “We hope Turkey’s experience inspires policy makers in other emerging markets to aim for high-income status.” “And we hope that by drawing up a balance sheet of Turkey’s achievements and challenges, this report will also inspire Turkey’s policy makers to redouble their own reform efforts and lift their country into the ranks of advanced high-income economies. That
would make the lessons from Turkey’s development experience all the more convincing for other countries,” Martin added. “With a per capita income of around $10,500, Turkey is just a few years away from crossing the threshold of becoming a high-income economy, if past growth rates are sustained,” Laura Tuck, World Bank Vice-President for Europe and Central Asia said. Turkey’s average annual growth rate was 4.5 percent between 1960 and 2012 and the share of the country’s middle-class increased from 18 percent to 41 percent of the population between 1993 and 2010, according to the bank.

Nature’s Sleep is excited to introduce a mattress designed specifically to help those suffering from chronic back pain. The 12” Sapphire Gel Mattress is revolutionary and has been designed to support the best recommendations by healthcare professionals, primarily in its unique cradling and contouring capabilities. The Sapphire Gel Mattress has extensive properties that are proven to help alleviate back ail-
ments. The memory foam adjusts to each and every movement you make throughout the night, eliminating pressure points from head to toe. Targeting these delicate pressure points is where the Sapphire gel mattress excels, and once they are eliminated, your back pain will be too. “We are so proud of this mattress,” said Alan Hirschhorn, Vice President of Marketing for Nature’s Sleep. “Everyone knows
that a good quality mattress is better for your back, but this product is made specifically with back pain sufferers in mind. In fact, our founder designed this mattress for his wife, who for years had suffered with back pain. He knew there had to be a more manageable solution to the pain she was suffering. So, he worked relentlessly on formulating a new type of mattress. We are proud to say his wife feels better than ever
50
since switching to the Sapphire! It’s pretty remarkable. We are proud to offer the Sapphire Gel Mattress, knowing that it can make such a big difference in people’s lives.” The Nature’s Sleep 12” Sapphire Gel Mattress has received praise and much support from healthcare professionals. It has an “elevator effect” for the sleeper, offering different levels of support regardless of whether the sleeper is on his back, side, or even stomach. The Sapphire Gel Mattress is
unlike other mattresses because it is composed of gel spheres and memory foam. While the spheres work to keep the sleeper cool through the night by capturing excess heat emitted from the body, the memory foam contours to the sleeper’s specific shape, offering support and keeping the spine aligned. Although we tend to think of proper spinal alignment as having good posture during the day, it’s equally important to do so at night. This is where the traditional inner-spring mattress fails and where a memory foam mattress excels. “We are used to helping people achieve great sleep,” said Mr.
Hirschhorn. “But it’s really special to hear from customers who have chronic medical conditions and are being helped by our Sapphire Gel Mattress.” Cindy M. from Boulder, CO, told us how her Sapphire Gel Mattress changed her life. “After just my first night with my new mattress I was so happy with my purchase. I thought all of the claims of ‘no more back pain and no more joint paint’ were exaggerated. But not so much! All of my shoulder pain and lower back pain is gone. My only regret is not buying a Nature’s Sleep years ago. My life is truly better.”

CushionCare memory foam seat cushion made from 100% memory foam Quality Materials are Used in the Production of the CushionCare Memory Foam Seat Cushion
(EMAILWIRE.COM) Miami, Florida Memory foam is polyurethane with additional chemicals increasing its viscosity and density. It is often referred to as “viscoelastic” polyurethane foam, or low-resilience polyurethane foam. Higher-density memory foam softens in reaction to body heat, allowing it to mold to a warm body in a few minutes. Faster speed of recovery of a foam to its original shape after a weight is removed is sometimes claimed as an advantage by memory-foam mattress producers, who may talk of “newer generation” foams with “faster recovery.” A memory foam is usually denser than other foams, making it both more supportive, and heavier. Memory foams are often sold for higher prices than traditional
ones. CushionCare ensures that its customers get 100% satisfaction from all its products, and at the same time offer it in an affordable price. Made from authentic materials such as 100% memory foam, the CushionCare Memory Foam Seat Cushion is being sold for only $48.99, which comes with a “Free Shipping” promo for a very limited time. This may serve as a wonderful gift to your loved ones this Holiday Season. This office chair seat cushion reduces the pressure on the spine and tailbone. It also provides lower back pain relief. It can be used in the home, the office or for travelling for long periods of time. It comes handy with a little handle on the side, allowing customers to carry it around wherever they go.
Also, we have a bonus for clients; that is the extra cover which is Blue in color. This is an awesome treat to travel-lovers. Some customers who had already purchased and tried the CushionCare Memory Foam Seat Cushion are very satisfied with it. Alexis G, one of the customers from Amazon shares, “I drive a lot and I sit for long hours at a time at my job. Sitting for long periods of time can really take its toll on your behind. It can get really uncomfortable. I absolutely loved this cushion! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who takes long road trips or sits for long periods of time. I will definitely use it on long road trips.”

Lenzing presents new study ® on the use of TENCEL in hygiene products When using the TENCEL® BIOSOFT product the likelihood of sleeping through the night rose quite clearly by approximately 10% and one with a top-sheet of a TENCEL® BIOSOFT blend for four weeks each.
Lenzing project manager, Martin Häubl, at the Top-Sheet TENCEL® BIOSOFT Presentation in Barcelona.
The result was unequivocal: the TENCEL® BIOSOFT blend was awarded top marks. The performance of the product itself was given a positive rating as were the properties which led to a better feeling on the skin. One point particularly worthy of mention was that when using the TENCEL® BIOSOFT product the likelihood of sleeping through the night rose quite clearly (by approximately 10%) for those
participating since this product needed to be changed less frequently due to the additional wear comfort. Therefore, using TENCEL® BIOSOFT translates directly into improved incontinence products. “A survey of affected parties revealed that among otherwise healthy human beings, the burden of incontinence leads to restrictions in everyday life and each improvement in this situation positively impacts well-being,” Elisabeth Stanger, Global Director of Hygiene at Lenzing, explains.
At the “Outlook in Barcelona” conference, Lenzing shared results of consumer tests using TENCEL® BIOSOFT, an ultra-soft hydrophobic Lyocell fiber type, in the topsheet of incontinence products. In cooperation with the German company, Hygiene Technologie GmbH, Lenzing conducted a wear test which was analyzed by the Austrian Research Institute, Joanneum Research Forschungs GmbH. Fifty-three people tested an incontinence product with a top-sheet of 100% polypropylene

Founded three years ago, Alfabed sells 2,500 meters of quilted products abroad daily. General manager of the company Osman Yuzuak introduced his business.
Osman Y端z端ak, General Manager of Alfabed

Brief history of the company Our experiences during the last three years in the industry have shown us that mattress-manufacturing business is a continuously growing market. Quilted materials are one of the major elements of end products. We have been successful by now, because we produced variety of products by cooperating with our buyers in our efforts of product development. Our company exports it products to Caucuses and Balkan countries. In 2015 we will increase our share in these
markets. We have a factory of 1,000 sqm that produces 2,500 meters of quilted products daily. We have also enough machinery to produce more.
On importance of quilts in beds Quilted parts of the beds are the make-up of end products. The outlook of the bed is important so it must have aesthetic and impressive values. Sure, the quality of materials used in quilts is also important. It is the contact surface of bed with body.
66
We have developed a rich list of patterns in our catalogue. Some of them are of our customers and some are our own design. There are about a thousand choices of patterns and our motifs database of the machinery. Our machines are able to produce tang and jump kinds of quilts. Bed industry has flourished fast during the last decade, as our company did. With compatible machinery that are suitable for innovative processes, we have been a successful supplier for several companies. In 2015 we plan to expand our market coverage and market shares.
Trends are also important Mattress manufacturers have to watch to trends in the industry if they want to be successful. This will also help developing the industry as a whole. Research and development teams of the companies have to focus on innovative varieties. Also, the quality of materials in mattresses and their designs should be adapted to the needs of global market.

Scientists at Hohenstein Institute on skin sensory comfort The experts at the Institute have been conducting remarkable works for skin sensory and thermophysiological testing to assess just how comfortable bed linen and other textiles that come into direct contact with the skin
BÖNNIGHEIM – Hohenstein Institute carries out skin sensory and thermo-physiological testing to assess just how comfortable bed linen and other textiles that come into direct contact with the skin, such as night clothes, T-shirts, pullovers and wellness textiles, really are. Then they give them a comfort mark. These tests include measuring stiffness and the surface index. In the former, a laser beam is used to measure the angle to which a strip of fabric will bend, and this indicates the stiffness of the textile. Measuring the surface index of a textile means measuring how smooth or hairy it is. Looking at a cross-section of the textile, the

number and length of the fibers standing up from the fabric are evaluated. The number of contact points is measured to provide information about the area of the textile material that is in contact with the skin. Thanks to their decades of experience, the experts at the Hohenstein Institute can give guideline figures for the ideal number of contact points for textiles. In addition to these tests, the skin sensory testing also includes measuring the wet cling index and the sorption index. These tests show, firstly, how much a textile sticks to the skin when you sweat and, secondly, how effectively and quickly sweat is absorbed by a textile and

so transported away from the skin. Because the flows of both wet and dry heat from the skin play an important role in skin sensory perception, the Hohenstein Institute also carries out two thermo-physiological tests – they measure water vapour resistance, used to define “breathability”, and the thermal insulation provided by the textile. Both properties are tested using the Skin Model, which is able to simulate both sweating by human skin and the dry heat that it emits. Textiles that have been tested can be awarded the Hohenstein Institute’s “Skin sensorial comfort vote” quality label. The comfort mark provides valuable information about how comfortable the textile feels to wear on the skin, and gives an objective assessment without the textile needing to be worn or used. In this way, even any princesses among consumers are bound to be impressed by both the label and the product.
The Hohenstein Institute uses the Skin Model to measure the “breathability” and thermal insulation of a textile.
Which brings us back to our story about the skin sensorial comfort vote. If the good fairy had sought advice from the experts at the Hohenstein Institute, then, after carrying out their tests for mark for skin sensory comfort, they would have been able to give her the following results: the textile was too stiff. That is why the bed linen did not nestle snugly around the princess’s body. The sorption index result was also poor, because sweat was not being efficiently absorbed. Furthermore, the bed linen was not “breathable” and its thermal insulation was inadequate. If the fairy godmother had also known about the “Skin sensorial comfort vote” quality label, she would have been able to use it to assess the comfort of some different bed linen and ful-
The experts at the Hohenstein Institute award the “Skin sensorial comfort vote” for textiles which feel particularly comfortable on your skin.

fill the princess’s wish by giving her some that would completely satisfy her and allow her to have a good night’s sleep - with no sweating or scratching.
And the moral of the story is: with the “Skin sensorial comfort vote”, you’ll never have a bad night’s sleep and your clothes will always feel comfortable.

Turkish sleep products industry had a “not so bed” year for 2014 Sleep Tech magazine made a comprehensive survey about the industry’s performance in 2014 and its hopes for 2015. Most of the interviewees responded positively while some of them were slightly compliant and pessimistic about 14 and 15. We asked three questions:
1) How was 2014 for the Turkish sleep products industry in 2014? 2) What do you expect from 2015 for the industry? 3) What do you suggest to improve the Turkish sleep products industry further? The answers of important personalities of the sector follow:
84
ABIDIN SEZGIN, BOARD CHAIRMAN OF FORMAT SUNGER: 2014 was not an extraordinary year. Our exports were hit by terror problem in some countries such as Iraq, Libya, etc. The companies tried to overcome capacity usage problem with domestic market dynamics they still had a tough time to manage this. I want to be optimistic about 2015. The actors of the sectors have enthusiasm despite all negative facts. When we consider the world markets we see that the sector has a nature and maturity to grow fast. We should not compensate from the quality especially in exports. We have to attach extra importance in R&D studies, focus on high quality and timing in order to contribute to the major export target of the government for 2023.
85
ARIF EMRE OLMEZTOPRAK, EXPORT MANAGER OF FORM SUNGER: 2014 passed pretty well. This year we worked really busy. We made quite a big effort for providing quality service on time to our clients which are in Turkey and abroad. Details of our sales, especially we are witnessing an increase in awareness in the sector. Visco foam and visco pillow sales have increased compared to previous year. This shows to increase demand of quality, comfort and awareness in the market. Generally we are seeing that the sector is growing. 2015 seems that full of political ambiguities. We hope that regional problems are solved and also ensured peace rapidly. Regardless of everything, the sector growing and this seems clearly. We are thinking that a year of 2015 will come to the fore with innovation during it’s time. With the resolution of regional problems, markets will become more active. Turkish Sleep Sector is at the lucky spot as a location. It contains many elements which are able to come out to the variety of World markets. Turkish Sleep sector’s history is not based on very past. In spite of its history it took the way very fast. This proofs that it brings out innovative brands to the World market. Briefly our suggestion is; the products which equipped with original thoughts will may offer them to the World market and create products which are innovative and unrepeatable.
86
AYNUR ERMAN, GENERAL MANAGER, ERSAN COMPANY:
qualified products in the sleeping products and bedding sector and we add value to the world with R&D studies.
2014 was a productive year for the Turkish sleep products industry. We saw Sleep Well Expo Istanbul, the first exhibition held in the sleep products industry which was separated from the furniture industry. Here we showed once again how good we are in sleep products but also we realized that we need to be intend in Sleepwell exhibition. The year 2014 showed growth in Turkey as well as sleep products in the world.
What we all need to do is to follow new trends in the developing world. Yet, people in the world want to see new things. We have to implement them in 2015. By giving more importance to Research & Development and by making unusual different products we have to provide exceptional awareness. In this way we should improve our market share.
In 2015 we expect to see Turkish companies as branded companies in the world. To adopt the world that the Turks are making a lot of
Making products without compromising our quality are indispensable to the development of the sector.
87
BILAL KARAKUS, GENERAL MANAGER OF DOGUS OFSET: 2014 was a quite shrunk year when compared to the previous years. The main reason of this stagnancy was the export shrinkage to neighboring countries because of the conflicts in those markets. The domestic market had similar problems. 2013 was a better year for the sector. We don’t have big expectations for 2015 either. The Turkish mattress industry is mostly dependent on domestic and Middle Eastern markets. I believe that the problems in domestic market will continue and the conflicts in neighboring countries will not end very soon. When we add the economic and financial pressure of ever-falling oil prices on the existing problems, we see that our markets will be more shrunk. In line with these realities we should change our faces to new markets as Europe and America but we need minimum one year to build up these new routes. We will build up these lines in 2015 and reap the fruits in 2016. The Turkish sleep sector has been going at the share of the furniture industry. In order to develop the sector should be independent from furniture and should be well organized in sales circles and organizations of its own. Our sub-industry should also be supported. Leading companies capable to produce alternative products should be motivated to help the sector develop.
88
EDA ZARLI, PROPRIETOR OF METAPLAS We can say that the sleep sector experienced a bad year more than needed due to the war in neighboring countries. We wish 2015 will be a more peaceful year compared to 2014 and a lucrative year for the sector. We will attach more importance on research and development activities and make the necessary investments for it at the same time in the network marketing strength and customer satisfaction.
89
HUSEYIN KOCA, SALES DIRECTOR, COATS: 2014 has been a year with good performance. We are expecting 10% increase in the segment in 2015. We believe that the sector will improve sales further with innovative and specialized sleep products, such as, anti-bacterial, anti-bug and flame retardant mattresses and other sleep products.
90
ILYAS SALTAN, GENERAL MANAGER OF HISTEKS: The sector has been going through a shrinking period. The profit margins have been considerably dropped. There is a harsh competition but demand is not high. Quality companies and those who attach importance on R&D will stand. Despite all negative cases there is an increase in export volume which makes us to be optimistic. We have to be open for innovations and changes and we have to follow the trends. The people are more conscious about sleep. We develop our product range in line with demands and feedbacks we get from the consumers.
91
The second group, where Metal Matris must be considered, they do not make mattress or Furniture production and their high quality spring wire and spring manufacturing and is only for the market (the mattress producers and the whole sealers who know the market they are running in and manage the trade with local companies). These kinds of companies need to manage the global demand from the customers and the potential customers and also the current or future trend of the relevant markets.
MAHMUT OZTURK, INTERNATIONAL SALES AND BRAND MANAGER, METAL MATRIS: We can consider the spring producers as two groups: Producers for their own usage and supplier producers for the mattress manufacturers. With a simple look, the first group usually own coiler and assembler machineries and their output is only used in their mattresses or furniture. Their production is standard based; no many specs they need to manage. There is no direct supply to the market which means their springs must full fill their satisfaction only as everything is consumed inside their facility.
There are some sub-aspects of the evaluation on the developments on this sector. High quality mattress producers with the know-how they gather from the market and R&D department studies drive them to present new ideas and outputs. They share what they have and ask our strategically partnership on any project. We also search and gather fresh information about change in demand and study on of the effectiveness by many points and update our range of production if the tests and feedback results would be positive by the market which is supplied by our customers as mattress producers and/or whole sealers. The most innovative item with our range of production is the pocket spring. It is elastic, comfort orient-
ed and it has the feature to act independently by its each spring. Many options on the height, hardness, shape and its being easy to be modified definitely makes pocket spring the rising trend in the sector. Everybody says, “The world is global. The demand is getting bigger but affected from each other closely than ever. We must separate the demand in two at the first plan: Cheap mattresses and expensive (lux) mattresses. A company targets to produce cheap mattress usually has its own coiler/ assembler machinery which means we supply him with spring wire or loose bonnell only. Lux mattress producers they are open to the developments and eager to lead the market. These producers have energy and desire for searching and developing. Mostly they supply European countries plus USA plus Canada. In Turkey there are some worldwide companies with this vision already. For poor countries or developing countries still the big demand is on cheap mattresses. So if any producer targets an African country (for example) the most important topic would be the price then. This obviously means that there may be need to change the specs and innovative them very rarely and only if something pushes the producer.

and innovative products gained momentum. We have great hopes for 2015 to ship to new markets and to gain new customers and markets. We are planning to develop and improve pillows and mattresses with gel with cooling feature and we want to make these products gain ground fast in the market. We want to increase our market share by tending to new and different concepts and finding new markets and to build up our brand image.
MALIK ENES HUROGLU, SALES & MARKETING MANAGER, HURPOL: 2014 saw an increase on familiarity of the importance of sleep as every year passed and producers got demands in line with this conscious. It was a nice and colorful year when changes and innovations were welcomed
The government should support the promotion of the sleep sector with supportive commercials to help people to prefer right mattress. Mattress and other sleep product manufacturers should also contribute to teaching and training the consumers to tend to the right products and to learn the importance of quality sleep.

and evolving as technological developments and scientific researches about healthier sleeping require new and better products. We estimate that 2015 will be more productive based on new technologies and changing trends compare with the last year.
MUHAMMED SAID ERDOGON, PROPRIETOR OF NERTEKS: In 2014, the growth of the sleep products industry had a positive influence on our company. The demands, acquired by rising in consumer expectations from the producer in consequence of public awareness about importance of sleep to health and quality of life and that the sleep environment considerable contributors to quality of sleep, have let companies produce higher quality products. Undoubtedly, 2015 will deliver some major changes to the world of sleep products. This industry is moving forward rapidly and constantly adapting
Since the improvement in the industry is related to new trends offered by companies, the most outstanding topic is research and development for sleep manufacture producers. Appreciating the need of consumers and following current technologies in the industry are keys to achieve a great success. Furthermore, in Turkey, unfortunately sleep products sector is in the shadow of furniture sector. Giving the value of human health and specialization in the industry will present high quality products and improvements. In addition to them, as this industry is developing rapidly in Turkey, it is substantial considering importance of advertising throughout the world. We believe with more promotion, publicity and commercial messages the whole world will gain awareness about real value of Turkish sleep products industry.
95
MUSTAFA CETINBULUK, BOARD MEMBER OF MITSAN: If we consider the whole year first half was silent as business wise second half was too busy; so overall especially after 3rd quarter we did great business, we grew and increased our market share. To give better service to our customers we continue to invest to our production facilities. Due to global economic parameters there are some negative comments about next year as global wise. But thanks to our customers’ loyalty and our good reputation in market, we are expecting a better year. We are well prepared for next year with increasing our capacity and product portfolio with low weight felts and several types of waddings. We all have to effort a lot to produce innovative products to get more added value and find new markets so that World would be enough to satisfy all parties of industry.
96
MUSTAFA KIZKIN, EXPORT MANAGER OF KISBU: 2014 was a successful year for the sleep products industry because last years construction of the houses and also development of the cities in Turkey have been growing really fast so people always are in need of products for sleeping and for houses. Also Turkish products are famous w覺th really high quality and reasonable prices. Because of this increasing of sales of Turkish products happened not only in local market but also in other countries. For our companies also was good year we provide to companies for
sleep product spun bond, mattress protector, Polyester fiber and ultrasonic quilting. Quality of the goods is becoming more and more important for clients, so we can expect that in 2015 this tendency. We expect also to work with foreign companies for export. People have to start look forward for reaching World standards. For example we have World quality standard and we keep our quality standard with worlds and our all customer have satisfied with our product.
97
N. CANSU COSKUN, FOREIGN TRADE MANAGER OF PUNTEKS: I think it was a developing year for the industry and for our company. With newly emerging markets, there are many different opportunities to benefit for us all in the market. We have a positive impression among foreign markets as Turkish Sleep Products Industry. We have to strengthen our presence in existing markets to be stronger and try more to reach new markets in order to be better competitors in world market. Quality standards should be improved and be consistent. This will pave the way for our industry to be able to move further more aggressively in the world market.
98
ONUR KIRAYOGLU, MARKETING COORDINATOR OF KIRAYTEKS: Although the political and international uncertainties still hanging over the market this been an exciting year for the Turkish sleep products industry. Our growth has continued up to the last quarter of the year. I believe 2015 will even be better. First of all we need more stable political environment in all over the area, as it is one of the main keys to sustain macroeconomic stability. Otherwise unpredictable exchange and interest rates may force companies to be more conservative in their decision-makings. I believe that our industry has the wind against its back. Creative thinking in development and technology will provide the momentum to Turkish sleep products industry for even more growth in 2015.
99
OZKAN DEDECI, IMPORT&EXPORT MANAGER OF GERCEK PLASTIK: 2014 was a good year for the bedding industry. Because, sleep technology is developing day after day and customer demands are also on the rise in this direction. These developments are all the bedding industry, particularly bearing manufacturers as producers of positive effective. The bed sector is a sector itself day by day has managed to become an open investment areas. In this direction, positive developments for the bedding industry for the new year and will be the new investments. This is an investment for the right to use and consumer health technology is of great importance for both the bed market mobility. In our region of the World trends closely to developing more of the sleep products we need to follow. We produce models should give support to research and development to maintain the popularity. From large and medium sized investments that should be avoided. This will move in the direction we will take the right steps in the location always sleep industry leader in the Turkish.
100
RIFAT DENIZ, SALES & MARKETING MANAGER, COMFYTEX: As Comfytex our main market is Europe and for Europe 2014 was not an easy year even they started to come out of smelling of the last crisis. Concerning the world market; as a big manufacturer Comfytex achieved to export more than 35 countries in last half of 2014 so it means that the year must be fruitful for the Turkish industry as well. Comfytex meets with new mattress producers from all over
the world every week, also as Comfytex will increase business trips to every part of the World in 2015, we are so exited with new year 2015 as we will meet more business partners and to get more share from the Market. “New Designs - New Year, this is our Motto for 2015 Comfytex is going to launch new Designs Collections and New Innovative Fabrics in the beginning of 2015. Comfytex suggests that to change all the designs to make a fresh start in 2015.
101
also the growth of the sector in the year 2013 was below the sector’s estimations and expectations. So it is possible to say that the growth of the sector in the years after 2012 was under the expectations. We hope it to reaches the numbers to the satisfactory levels as growth rates after 2015. Although the economic situation of the country and the markets has not supported to desired growth, we believe and think that the growth rate of the industry in 2015 will easily see the double-digit numbers.
TAHIR NURSACAN, GENERAL MANAGER, MILKAY: We can say that piece based production of the sector has grown but it was below the expectations. And it was not just for the year 2014;
When we look at the last 5 years (2009-2013) Turkey’s furniture export has increased as 16% and our country took its 15th position in the rank of World Furniture Exporters with a great success. And this situation shows us that it is normal to expect to get double-digit growth numbers of the industry in 2015.
In our country the supply of mattress which as 95% of innerspring and 5% of non-innerspring, it is showed and evaluated as a part of furniture supply. And we think that fixing and regulation of this presentation mistake is an obligation from the years ahead by making sleep products oriented presentations, organizations, catalogues and fairs as promotional activities. By implementing these activities, the sleep products industry must be known and exist as a professional line of work on its own. We believe that if this consideration spreads and expands in the furniture Industry then we’ll see its benefits in the future. I would like to use this chance and specify that Sleep Well Expo fair did a great job and it was well directed and well timed within this scope. We believe that it will grow a lot as a serious industrial fair in the years ahead.
102
UGUR ASLAN AYDIN, CHAIRMAN OF LEOTEX: I believe that the volume of sleep products industry in Turkey acts and develops in line with the sales of housings. A lot of settlement requirements are generated at new houses. And home textiles and sleep products have a big share in these new requirements. Besides, the conscious and preference of more comfortable sleep generates new demands for value added and
healthier products in our country which has an average age of 30. So, the demand in domestic market develops and the volume widens. When it comes to foreign markets, losing ground of the TRL made the exporters more competitive and led the way to bring the share of Eastern Europe manufacturers to Turkey in end products. This affects the sleep products industry from many aspects such as machinery, fabric,
metal materials, accessory products and yarn. As the fair activities increase customer portfolio of companies they increase supply alternatives of consumers too. The competition generated in this system is influenced by volume and quality. Sleep Well exhibition held in 2014 was admirable from the standpoints of being first in the sector and its discipline and quality.
Dunya Textile opens to mid Eastern and north African markets 104
Sami Karakaya: “We export to several European countries. In 2015 we aimed to enter new markets in Middle East and in North Africa.
Sami Karakaya General Manager of DĂźnya Texile

Turkey heads in bed fabrics Turkish manufacturers run at the forefront in fabric production for mattresses. Turkish companies are known in the world with their technologies as well. In line with increasing number of companies and rising standards in quality in the fabrics field, the industry is becoming more competitive in world markets.
105
New targets for exports We export our products to many of European countries such as Belgium, Holland and England. We promote our products by participating in fairs and visiting to prospective buyers in their countries with an aim to increase our exports. We will be more active in Mid Eastern and North African markets in 2015. Despite all fluctuations in world markets, Turkish bed industry performed well in 2014. Year 2015 seems to be more successful. In order to grow more, the industry has to emphasize on research and development efforts and to produce valuable products. It will be also beneficial for national economy and foreign trade balance.

On last year’s performance We already reached our target in the beginning of the December for 2014 Target so the sales in December is extra additional for us. This year was low loss and we increased quite much our export sales and the number of countries volume. So, 2014 was very fruitful for Yapi Lider Kimya. However, the sector was affected negatively as the first quarter is calm, the bothers due to the lack of the raw material in the last quarter, fluctuation in the currency and its affection to the prices. Extreme competitive is also an obstacle on investments in the sector. The profitability continues on very low stages as the supply is much more than demand and even the exceed on credits for the payments take the profits We would firstly like to continue to work as a team, keep our quality production without compromise. Besides, we aim to enlarge our product range and to be opened to new sectors to increase our profitability and most importantly to invest to the sector.
For development As you know, we service to the furniture and mattress sector so this is important for us that the sector has a voice throughout the World. Our producer companies in Bursa-Inegol, Kayseri and other cities should think the whole World. It is crucial that World local companies should carry their visions. What is important for us is to produce and service practical products in operation as quick as possible with quality raw materials, harmless to human health to the furniture and mattress producers.

What are the difficulties you face in Turkish mattress market and how do you cope with?
heavily against Chinese and local production. We work with printing companies and know that price pressure comes from mattress producers. On the other hand, it is clear that continuous price decrease lead to fall off in quality. In previous years, we were selling mattress labels produced with acetate satin surface. In Europe and USA market, we still sell such labels to well known mattress producers. On the other hand, label type has changed in Turkish market day by day due to price pressure. Generally, Pes satin and nylon taffeta (japon akmaz) labels are required.
Difficulties are not special to us. We think all suppliers face with the same. These are the chronic lower price expectation and long payment terms. As our all materials produced in Europe, we face this pressure
Import from China is in high level although not having good quality. In fact our main problem is that label printing companies know our quality, sure not having any problem but asking for at Chinese prices.
labels. We work with label printing companies who looks for quality but at a moderate price. Our partners use offset, flexo and digital machines to print label materials.
114
Although it is too difficult, we have tried all possibilities and produced new mattress label material at a price so close to market expectation. Our partners can find our high and standard production quality in glue and printing. We advise to respectful mattress companies to ask their printing companies for high quality labels for their high quality mattresses. Label is the identification of any product and quality mattresses deserve quality labels.
Which label printing companies prefer your materials and why? We work with appreciated printing companies active in printing of mattress labels. Our partners print labels mainly for Turkish mattress exporters or export labels directly. They would you like to be sure about quality
and ensure this with our labels. Secondly, printing offices prefer us if they would you like to get produced special material for them by specifying glue type, amount or surface. They can also require revise in our standard materials according to the their needs. Our another big advantage is to supply for all printing machines. We produce almost for all printers which are offset, flexo, Thermal transfer, HP INDIGO, screenprint, letter press, inkjet (waterbased inks, UV inks, oil based inks, HP latex, Epson Sepiax etc) Xerography, phaser, dot-matrix. We are always in close cooperation with printer producers to develop most suitable product to get best print result. We work closely together with HP Indigo, Lomond (Memjet) Industrial Inkjet Ltd., HP Latex, AGFA,
RISO Benelux, Xeikon, Xerox, Stork SPG, Sato, and Godex.
Which points differentiate you from your competitors? We have high knowledge of the latest printing technologies and know how to implement these on textile surfaces. Our production facilities allow small runs (3.000m²) for special products or tailor made solutions, very low grams to very high grams of heat seal (10-200gr/m² and self adhesive (15gr/m²- 60gr/m²). We can also revise standard materials according to the needs of customers.
What are the adhesive types you coat? We coat self-adhesive, heat seal (thermal), self adhesive + heat seal combination (for automatic labeling) and produce non-fray for sewing.
115
What are the minimum and maximum grams of adhesive you coat? It changes according to the types of adhesives but in general we coat 10-200 gr/m2 for self adhesive and 25-400 gr/m2 for heat seal.
What type of surface materials you use? We use many surface materials mainly divided into four categories such as Woven textile (natural fibers, synthetic fibers and natural/synthetic fiber blends, weaves plain, satin and twill), non-woven textile (synthetic fibers, synthetic / semi –synthetic fiber blends), films (polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane) and papers (coated and uncoated).

We have different slitting and cutting facilities in both factories such as cutting and slitting (tapes, sheets) and die cutting (labels of roll). We also do scatter coating of heat sealable powders, powder for coating (powder dot) and paste dot coating.

interzum guangzhou serves as the bellwether of the industry as well as offering trade practicality, GM Lee Ms. Karen Lee, General Manager South China, Koelnmesse Co., Ltd., said in an interview that interzum guangzhou had an excellent edition in 2014 and would experience even a better edition in 2015. Full text of the interview follows:
In retrospect, what were the major achievements of the last show?
Ms. Karen Lee General Manager South China, Koelnmesse Co. Ltd.
The original four-day event has proven to be insufficient for trade visitors, and as such, after three years of research and coordination, CIFM / interzum Guangzhou 2014 has successfully extended to five days. On the one hand, this has provided more business opportunities for exhibitors, and on the other hand, it has also benefitted buyers with ample time to discover partners that meet their procurement needs. According to our figures and survey, both the length of stay and overall satisfaction of visitors have increased, so the event will continue to span five days in 2015.
How is the 2015 edition positioned? Providing a quality “one-stop” trading platform for all manufacturers and buyers in the various fields of the industry has always been the aim of CIFM / interzum guangzhou. We hope to further grow the position of CIFM / interzum guangzhou as a professional trade fair which both serves as the bellwether of the industry as well as offering
trade practicality, for it to become the preferred platform for product launches and lead industry trends in the region. Also, to be the event of choice for trade visitors to obtain the latest industry information, and promote trade exchange. In addition, the 2015 event will further improve on exhibit segmentation, so that different types of exhibits will be more clearly defined and concentrated, which will better categorize exhibitors showcasing similar products together and improve procurement efficiency. For example, the new Hall 12.1 will focus on showcasing machinery, materials and components for upholstery and bedding. In future, we will place more emphasis on the development of the interior design accessories product segment to become a major exhibit category at CIFM / interzum guangzhou.
What are the main objectives of the show? As Asia’s premier woodworking machinery, furniture manufacturing and interior décor trade fair, the scale of CIFM / interzum guangzhou has remained at 130,000 square meters for years. With the growth of the domestic and Asian furniture manufacturing industry, the demand for the event from the woodworking machinery, furniture production and raw materials industry has been increasing every year, leading to a perpetual short
119
supply of booth spaces at CIFM / interzum guangzhou booth in recent years. To counter this issue, CIFM / interzum guangzhou 2015 will activate the last available hall, Hall 12.1, expanding the overall area from 130,000 to 140,000 square meters. Through the expansion, we hope to provide more opportunities to the industry to showcase the latest and most high-quality products and technologies, so that more premium international brands will be able to participate, and at the same time expose visitors to more exhibitors.
Are there any new events such as awards, seminars and workshops at the next edition? There will be a decrease in the number of organizer hosted seminars in 2015 compared with previous years, as we wish to free up time slots for more exhibitors to hold their own product launches, technical seminars and other activities.
How do you aim to differentiate the show from other industry trade fairs that cater to the furniture and timber sectors? As one of the global satellite events of interzum in Cologne, Germany, the brand has enabled CIFM / interzum guangzhou to stand out from its competition since it was first introduced to China in 2004. In
terms of influence, CIFM / interzum guangzhou aims to have a strong foothold in China, with influence extending to Asia and the rest of the world. Currently, it has become the industry’s most prestigious and flagship trade fair in Asia. In terms of exhibition scale and scope of exhibits, the event in 2015 will be expanded to 140,000
120
square meters – the largest event of its kind in Asia. The exhibits of CIFM / interzum guangzhou covers the entire industry from raw and auxiliary materials for furniture production to woodworking machinery, upholstery machinery and other production and auxiliary machinery, as well as interior décor raw materials. Finally, when the trade fair was first established, we realized that “effectiveness” is the key to a successful and lasting event, so regardless of its development, the plans of the organizers have been focused on enhancing the results of exhibitors’ participation, bringing the latest international industry designs and trends to the event, and promoting the development of the
industry. It is this combination of effectiveness and design concepts have been attracting the continuous participation of our exhibitors and visitors. Needless to say, with the gradual expansion of the event, the organizers are also improving the overall operations management and services to provide an experience of the highest quality for participating exhibitors and trade visitors, which is our core competitiveness.
How many visitors and exhibitors are likely to be there at the next edition? What percentage of them are repeat exhibitors and how many of them are new? Next year, the number of exhibitors is expected to exceed 1,200, and
121
among them more than 80% will be repeat exhibitors. We are also anticipating more than 62,000 visitors to procure at the event. As participation results have been significant, repeat exhibitors have consistently been taking part longterm, leading to many companies not being able to secure a booth space. Opening up Hall12.1is believed to ease the situation to a certain extend, so that new exhibitors that have been waitlisted for years will have the opportunity to participate in CIFM / interzum guangzhou, and at the same time providing more choices for buyers.
Who are some of the new exhibitors making their debut at the show? We will be seeing overseas companies, such as Fibromade, Hans Weber, Permo, Terao and Zimmer from countries, including Portugal, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
Do you have an idea of the volume of business that might be conducted at the show? The interzum series is a brand trade fair with German origins and therefore, show concepts and management styles are close to European exhibition practices. The key difference between trade fairs in Europe and China is the stronger emphasis on introducing design concept into the event to provide the latest information, inspirations and experiences for the industry. Since interzum was imported into China, this concept has been reinforced, and as such, comparing with events like Canton Fair, which pursues trade volume, interzum pays more attention to the experience of exhibitors and visitors, as well as the effectiveness in exhibitor-buyer interaction. This is also the main reason why interzum is able to successfully extend its foot prints from Germany to Singapore, Guangzhou and Moscow, develop sustainably and win high praises from the industry.
What - in your opinion - are the major trends for the furniture and interior design industry over the next year? Demand in the upholstered furniture market is closely related to the real estate market, and emerging markets in the BRIC economies are becoming a new point of growth for the global upholstered furniture market with their accelerating urbanization in recent years, growing urban population and intensifying of urban home construction. From the China market’s point of view, urbanization will bring about a huge development of the domestic upholstered furniture industry, which will in turn spur the growth of production machinery for upholstery at home and abroad. I believe the upholstered furniture segment will be a major highlight of next year’s furniture manufacturing industry.
What role does Interzum Guangzhou play in the development of the furniture and interior design industries in China and wider Asia? After over a decade of development, the China furniture manufacturing trade has now become a pivotal industry. Nevertheless, there is still a gap in the level of furniture manufacturing compared with other countries. For China to make it out to the world, it is necessary to absorb foreign advanced technology and integrate with specific local conditions, establish a strong foundation in the domestic market and seek self-development to come up with new products with independent intellectual property rights, and continue to narrow the distance with the world’s developed countries. Major international industry players have began participating in CIFM / interzum guangzhou since its inception in 2004, and have designated the event for new product releases annually in Asia. According to statistics, about 25% of the total number of exhibitors came from overseas in 2014, which brought with them the latest
122
products and cutting-edge technology each year. For domestic enterprises, not only can they compete against numerous world-class brands at CIFM / interzum guangzhou, but the event also serves as an important window of opportunity to expand outside of China. For foreign exhibitors, CIFM / interzum guangzhou is a vital spring board to enter the China market, and at the same time allows them to benefit from the event’s large pool of international buyers. On the other hand, foreign exhibitors bringing advanced technology, materials and designs to China, which in turns enables Chinese/Asian furniture manufacturers to upgrade their own production and compete on a different level with the international furniture industry. CIFM / interzum guangzhou is a quality business platform, which promotes mutual communicating among brands in the industry, thus encouraging healthy competition among peers, and plays the role of enhancing the overall level of the industry.

On services offered to bed manufacturers We produce solvent based and hot-melt adhesives for bed producers. Since it has serious hazards on health the use and production of solvent based adhesives are strictly controlled or even prohibited in some countries. Turkey will follow suit soon. So, we prefer hot-melt adhesives, and increase its share in our sales. PSA kind of hot-melt adhesives are mostly preferred by mattress producers. Pocked spring producers demand special kind of adhesives from our company.
125
Importance of adhesives for beds Adhesives are a major element for assembly of mattresses. Parts of the products should be combined by using quality adhesives. We are trying to develop the best adhesives for our customers. Development staff in our company is highly valuable from this point. We try to improve application process, to reduce waste, and to increase the strength of adhesives.
On exports Arabian peninsula, Middle East, Iran Russia and most of nort African countries are our major markets. We deliver half of our monthly production of 200 tons solvent-based foam glues, and 60 tons of PSA hot-melt glues.
On last year’s performance 2014 was highly fruitful. We added many profitable customers in our buyer list. We signed several contracts for distributorship in foreign markets. We even got new buyers in Istanbul and in Turkey. Sales in Istanbul accounts for a large share in domestic sales. We were highly successful in 2014 both from the supply and competitive point of view.
On new machinery Our production capacities for certain items have began to inadequate so we decided to expand capacities. Assembly of new machinery has almost been finished. With additional marketing efforts, we want to improve our position in the market.

Outlast presents new filling material for bedding
PCM viscose + down = Perfect symbiosis for an optimum sleeping climate Outlast Technologies, market leader for temperature regulating phase change materials (PCMs), enlarges its product range again and presents the new performance filling material “Universe”: Heat and moisture regulating PCM viscose fibers combine perfectly with cozy downs and offer a natural solution for climate comfort in bedding and apparel products. The heat managing Outlast® PCM viscose fibers form one part of the new filling material „Universe” (30% viscose Outlast®, 70% down). They are 10 mm short cut fibers with 7 dtex. Such a thick fiber with a high diameter was deliberately selected. “So we can guarantee a high loading of phase change materials (PCMs),” says Martin Bentz, Managing Director of Outlast Europe GmbH, Heidenheim/Germany. “The performance compared to a standard PCM viscose fiber here is four times higher”. In combination with the down, Outlast has developed a product offering optimum thermal comfort. The downs display their advantages like lightness, fluffy volume and naturalness, the Outlast® PCM viscose fibers regulate and optimize the climate comfort. Overheating and sweating are reduced significantly. What sounds easy was technically a very big challenge. “In conjunction with our well-known partner Kelheim Fibres, we are happy to have successfully obtained this
new process - a homogeneous blend where both wash and care requirements are ensured,” continues Martin Bentz. Thus, Outlast has further tested on “filling material” and found out that PCM filling materials are ideally suited to provide an optimum heat and moisture management. “The air transports body heat quickly to the performance fibers,” explains Volker Schuster, Director R&D at Outlast Europe. “One important aspect is that all fibers inside a filling altogether build a huge surface. And all fibers are flowed around by air. Therefore every fiber can react very quickly to temperature changes. Since the airflow is increased, this allows the PCMs to be more active in loading and discharging”. As a result, temperature changes are minimized and sweating can be reduced significantly. And Outlast strengthens: The new PCM filling material optimizes the climate proactively – contrary to other technologies that are merely transporting sweat. Outlast® technology is not a wicking technology, which manages moisture by reacting to sweat and pulling it away from the skin. Outlast® technology proactively manages your skin temperature while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. That’s the Outlast® difference. And you will feel this difference also in comfort and hygiene. Interesting side effect: By using the
127
new down/PCM viscose fiber blend the material costs of an end product (in comparison to the use of 100% down) can be reduced while also offering an interesting added value and more performance. This offers a benefit to manufacturers as well as to consumers.
Outlast® technology Outlast® technology was originally developed for NASA to protect astronauts from temperature fluctuations in space. Outlast® technology utilizes phase change materials (PCM) that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort. Outlast® technology is comparable to ice in a drink; as it changes from solid to liquid, it absorbs heat and cools the drink, keeping that drink at the desired temperature for a longer period of time. Outlast® phase change ma-
terials work in the same way. The PCMs have the capacity to absorb, store and release excess heat. This gives any product containing Outlast® technology the ability to continually regulate skin’s microclimate. As the skin gets hot, the heat is absorbed, and as it cools, that heat is released. The benefits of Outlast® products at a glance: •Absorbs excess body heat •Manages moisture •Reduces overheating •Reduces chilling •Reduces perspiration •Continuously adapts to thermal changes More information can be obtained at Outlast hall in Heimtextil: hall 8.0, stand D74.
Manufacturing process of mattress 130
The bed is considered the most important piece of furniture in the household. Mattress is the main part of a bed. For a good night’s sleep, the basic necessity remains that of a good quality mattress. It has a wide variety of types depending on its nature and feature. Coil, spring, latex, foam, futon, water, air, etc. are all kinds of mattresses and each of these has its own varieties.
In fact, the evolution of the mattress has been slow going. Over the centuries, mattresses remained unsophisticated—and uncomfortable. Up until the 20th century, mattresses were filled with horsehair, rags or cotton and highly unsanitary, difficult to clean and lumpy. Poorer people relied on ticks —fabric sacks
stuffed with straw, corncobs, or other crop debris. In addition to offering an inconsistent texture, such primitive mattresses were difficult to clean—and they generally started out dirty, stuffed as they were with agricultural debris that often entered the pad or ticking with soil and insects. However, they offered
one concrete advantage: made at home from cast-off farm goods, they were cheap. Even late in the nineteenth century when small local manufacturers began to produce mattresses commercially, the items remained inexpensive because early mattress makers continued to rely on extremely inexpensive stuffing.
131
It wasn’t until the 1850s that the first significant advance in mattress design appeared - the use of uniform springs underneath the layers of upholstery. In mid 19th century, a significant development was made in the form of mattresses with stabilized interior springs. The mattress got firm and resilient with a uniform texture all over. These innerspring mattresses used to be made by placing a set of uniform springs inside the layers of upholstery. After that mattresses just became popular so much so that today they are one of the most important home furnishings. Presently, the consumer demand for mattresses is fairly consistent. In 1990, approximately 16 million mattresses were sold in the United States. Together with foundations, mattresses accounted for about $4 billion in retail sales. With the exception of a few large companies, most mattress manufacturers are fairly small, community-based operations. Of the approximately 825 mattress factories across the United States, most are still owned and operated by the founding families.
132
The core of a mattress is formed by making an innerspring unit. It is a series of wire coils, attached to each other with additional wire. Four types of coils are mostly used by the mattress manufacturers- the Bonnell; the Offset; the Continuous; and the Pocket System. The hourglass-shaped Bonnell springs are knotted at both ends. Offset spring is also in the shape of an hourglass but its top and bottom are flattened so as to facilitate a hinging action among the coils. Continuous innerspring is one very long strand of steel wire configured into S-shaped units. Pocket coil is encased in a fabric which also connects it to the adjoining coil-casing units. A mattress can have anywhere between 250 and 1,000 coil springs. In the mattresses that have fewer coils, a heavier gauge of wire has to be used. The individual coils can be attached in a variety of ways. One general method is that of using helicals- the corkscrew-shaped wires which run along the top and bottom of the springs, lacing the coils together. Rigid border wires are also attached sometimes around the perimeters for stabilizing the innerspring unit. In most of the cases, a mattress manufacturer does not make the innerspring units. Instead, subcontract the production of the innerspring unit to an outside firm that specializes in making springs. . Once these completed innerspring units are received, the work of at the mattress factory begins. The manufacturer applies the cushioning layers that will determine the feel and comfort of the final product. The textile furnishing layers are affixed to the innerspring
133
manually. There are essentially two upholstery layers- the insulator and the cushioning layers. The insulator, is affixed directly onto the innerspring and prevents the next layer, the cushioning layer, from molding to the coils. While the insulator used is almost standard, the number of cushioning layers differs widely in number. These cushioning layers range from 2 to 8 layers and from 1/4 inch to 2 inches (.63 to 5 cm) in thickness. These cushioning layers determine the feel and comfort of the end product. * While this process in being undertaken, the decorative outside cover is being sewn in another area of the plant. Made on a gigantic quilting machine, a huge number of needles attach the cover to its backing material. The stitching actually serves a dual purpose in that it prevents the mattress cover from shifting and makes a beautiful ornamental exterior. The quilted fabric is then cut into the top, bottom and side panels of the mattress. Side handles or vents are affixed to the sides at this time as well.
134
Then, too, critical inspections are completed at various points of the manufacturing process to ensure quality control, but are most generally done: after receiving the innerspring, before closing the unit, and before packing. The quilted fabric is cut into panels that are attached to the top and bottom of the mattress. The side panels are often cut from the same quilted fabric but sometimes it is made separately on a border machine. Side handles or Vents, if they have to be fitted to the side panels, are attached before these side panels are applied to the mattress. Closing operation is very critical which needs highly skilled execution. A movable sewing head that is mounted on a track is used for the closing operation. The Tape edge operators manually feed the top, bottom, and side panels and a heavy duty binding tape into the sewing machine as it moves around the mattress. It highly depends on the skill of the operators to feed
135
just the right amount of each material into the machine in order to get the end product of a professional standard. A foundation mattresses or boxsprings lie directly beneath the mattress, resting on the frame of the bed. There are different varieties of boxsprings. In some of them, spiked coil configuration is used where there is a spring system while in others, torsion bars are used for giving support. In yet another type of boxspring, no springs at all are used and it consists of a built-up wooden frame.
From among these, the boxsprings having spiked coil design are the most common ones. The spiked coil design boxspring is made by attaching the bottom of each coil to a flat wooden frame. A wire grid is placed on top of the springs in an aligned manner and is locked manually. A thin layer of upholstery is attached at the top. If, however, the intended boxspring contains no springs, it consists of a wooden frame that may or may not have a layer of upholstery attached to its top. The frame is usually inserted into a
pre-sewn cover that encases the top and sides of the unit, regardless of the internal composition. A matching fabric border is applied to the sides, and a dust cover is also added to the face. The completed unit is inspected, a content label is attached, and the finished product is moved to a packing area where it gets a protective cover made of either paper or plastic. A tag featuring fire resistant properties also is attached, a requirement that began in 1987.

The youngest in felt production
145
Has been producing felts since 2007 Mitsan keeps investing to expand its production capacity with additional lines.
eldest machinery in our factory is of 2007, the youngest is 2013 model. We invest serious amounts of funds in them and now getting the fruits from both domestic and foreign markets. With all our competitors our industry is able to sell felts to all over the world. We try to differentiate ourselves from rivals. Standards and quality is important as well as the quality of services and response rates. Mustafa Çetinbulut, Board Member of Mitsan
Using recycled materials, the company is also sensitive to ecology. “We have the youngest machinery inventory in Turkey,” says, Mustafa Cetinbulut, chairman of Mitsan, who detailed about his company:
On machinery in factory We have five lines for production, all the youngest in Turkey. The
Homogeneity is important for felts We produce 500 – 2000 grams felts. They are ultra hard, hard and soft kinds. We also produce paddings for quilting. Homogeneity is important for felts. Turkey has a powerful position in the world, a homeland for felts. Main inputs for felts are textile by-products. We make some portion of inputs from recycled textiles, having certificate for this. Recycling is on the agenda of many other industries, including
146
mattress industry. We are somehow in the recycling business. We export recycled materials.
On investments We are investing for automation in our processes. That reduces the need for unskilled labor and simplifies the processes for packaging and transport operations. Every year we invest certain amounts in our factory. This year we are going to invest in both felt and foam production. Automated storage and barcoding investment were completed last year.
On exports We deliver both felt and foams to more than 30 countries. We have more share in the north African markets. We targeted to new markets, because problems in neighboring countries have forced us to seek new markets. Mattress manufacturers have reliable data about the number of felt and foam producers in the country. Markets are becoming more transparent. We try to expand our coverage in the world by seeking new and far away market.

Turkey’s mattress spring industry develops in line with the mattress industry One of the most important features of a mattress is to form as human body. To do this, the materials used at the mattress such as foam, felt, mattress ticking fabric and spring are very important. Maybe the most important one of these is spring. Specs as number of springs per square meter, flexibility against pressure of body weight, etc., maximize the comfort of sleep.
Developing fast especially in recent years Turkey has a rising trend in the mattress industry as well. Increasing their production quality and export activities, the mattress manufacturers contribute to the sector as well as to the national economy.
From foam to spring mattresses The materials used in production are naturally affecting the quality of the mattresses. The sector would be dominated by egg-carton type of mattresses but the innerspring mattresses dominated in the meantime and the sector was improved considerably. Sleep Tech magazine conducted a survey to learn the factors behind the success of the development of innerspring mattresses and the spring industry in Turkey.
149
ture approximately 3,5 million mattresses a year. However, production capacity is 7 million mattresses a year that means there is still a market gap in Turkey’s mattress industry. Turkey also exports USD 54 million, which is about 20% of total production value and imports USD 9 million.
Feridun TOSUN, Sales and Marketing Manager of Boyçelik
FERIDUN TOSUN, SALES & MARKETING DIRECTOR, BOYCELIK: It is going to be much better to talk firstly about mattress industry in the World and Turkey as well. The volume of the world mattress industry is about twenty billion dollars. USA, China and Brazil are listed as top 3 in production and consumption. Production and consumption numbers are increasing and are expected to grow more. One of the most important mattress markets is USA, which has approximately 6 billion USD mattress market, and there are more than 800 companies manufacture mattress in the USA. Total manufacture numbers of mattresses in USA is around 36 million pcs per a year. According to analysis made in Turkey, the volume of the mattress industry has exceeded USD 300 million. Turkey has a total of about 30 companies, engaged in the production of beds, which manufac-
Now we can talk about what kind of mattresses manufacture in the World and Turkey. The mainly there are 3 types of mattresses such as spring, latex, and visco mattress. The most popular mattresses are springs mattress which have a market share of around %65-70% in the world. The rest is latex and foam mattresses. Market share of spring mattress is around 90% in Turkey and rest of them is foam mattress. The main reason why spring mattress has more production is because there are lots of spring types you can able to use it for the mattresses. Such as Pocket spring, Bonnel Spring, Continues Spring, LFK Springs, Offset Springs and Verticoil Springs. Those all kind of springs have different advantages for mattress and it is easy to explain how it has advantage to end customers. For example you can easily manufacture low firm, middle firm and high firm mattresses and able to use different kind of spring wire in the same pocket springs. On the other hand, the other advantage is the cost. Spring or Foam has very important cost in the mattress production and mattress makers have to pay a lot of money for transportation cost so springs transportation cost is much cheaper than foam. Today, the pocket spring mattresses getting popular recently and demand of pocket spring is incredibly İncreasing since 2012 that’s why there is a lack of supply in the market and Springs companies are making investment to increase
capacity of pocket spring production. We feel that pocket springs mattress will be top on mattress production shortly. It is not easy to compare Turkey’s mattress manufacture style with European countries, American, or African, Middle East countries because of that each country has different type of mattress that’s why it will not be correct to say Turkey mattress style has the same mattress style like Europe, America, Asia, or Middle east. For instance if you go to African countries such as Nigeria ı can say that production of mattress is 95% is foam mattress but if you go to England 90% is spring mattress, middle east countries have almost 70% spring mattress and 30% foam and latex mattresses so each countries have its own mattress style. There are lots of factors that affect mattress industry such as culture, life style, and economic conditions. Culture is one of the most important factor for mattress type if you go to Europe or America 100% matters color is white color but if you go to North African countries you can be surprised it is not easy to find white color mattress such as Morocco i can say that 95% of mattress have different color like blue, green, there are only a few mattress in White color you can find which are only for hotels. That’s why culture has more accent on mattress style.
150
machineries and their output is only used in their mattresses or furniture. Their production is standard based; no many specs they need to manage. There is no direct supply to the market which means their springs must full fill their satisfaction only as everything is consumed inside their facility.
Mahmut Öztürk, International Sales Marketing and Brand Manager of Metal Matris
MAHMUT ÖZTÜRK, INTERNATIONAL SALES MARKETING AND BRAND MANAGER, METAL MATRIS: Who is Metal Matris? Metal Matris is located in the middle of Turkey (Kayseri) who is producing spring wire, bonnell spring units and pocket spring units as a member of Has Celik Group. We are concentrated on supplying mattress and sofa producers. We have been exporting to about 40 countries and in domestic market the most of the significant mattress manufacturers are supplied by Metal Matris. We are among top 1000 exporters of Turkey.
Mattress Production in Turkey and The World We can consider the spring producers as two groups: Producers for their own usage and supplier producers for the mattress manufacturers. With a simple look, the first group usually own coiler and assembler
The second group, where Metal Matris must be considered, they do not make mattress or Furniture production and their high quality spring wire and spring manufacturing and is only for the market (the mattress producers and the whole sealers who know the market they are running in and manage the trade with local companies). This kind of companies need to manage the global demand from the customers and the potential customers and also the current or future trend of the relevant markets.
151
The most innovative item with our range of production is the pocket spring. It is elastic, comfort oriented and it has the feature to act independently by its each spring. Many options on the height, hardness, shape and its being easy to be modified definitely makes pocket spring the rising trend in the sector.
How to provide better development in the sector and increase quality of production? Everybody says, “The world is global. The demand is getting bigger but affected from each other closely than ever. We must separate the demand in two at the first plan: Cheap mattresses and expensive (lux) mattresses. A company targets to produce cheap mattress usually has its own coiler/
assembler machinery which means we supply him with spring wire or loose bonnell only. This obviously means that there may be need to change the specs and innovative them very rarely and only if something pushes the producer about.
152
What should we do about making it higher quality? Saying is simple but doing not. In fact for Turkish companies quality mustn’t be something that market drives but sine qua non of the production. Thankfully it is not like before: Branding is a key thing that private sector prioritizes and the Government promotes.
Final Note Metal Matris has recently been approved by the Ministry of Economy
for the Turquality Branding Program. We are preparing a development road map for during next four years. It is about all departments of Metal Matris to be perfectly coordinated and definitely about concentration on how Metal Matris would become a worldwide brand as a Turkish brand with improved and well-scheduled marketing activities. Also by further years we have been aiming raising awareness on the end consumers to look for the Metal Matris quality while they are purchasing mattresses for themselves.
153
Alper Ocak, Board Member of İskeçeli Çelik Yay
ALPER OCAK, BOARD MEMBER, ISKECELI CELIK YAY: The sector has been developing day by day. As is the case for every sector Turkish people started to source quality products in the mattress industry too. Turkey has some very quality spring manufacturers, too. We have companies making production at world standards. But what makes me upset is the leading companies such as Iskeceli Yay export a big part of their production and leave more economical springs for the domestic market. So, lower quality springs are demanded in the domestic market. We can easily say; Turkey has the ability to produce more lucrative, more quality and most importantly, more innovative products than many other countries. While many countries focused on manufacturing standard springs and to reduce the cost of manufacturing, Turkish spring manufacturers such as Iskeceli Yay focused on R&D to produce more innovative products. The sector has gained momentum in the world with more innovative and patented products. We should train Turkish consumers and we should place extra importance on developing demand to ask better products in the industry. We gladly see that the demand has been improving at this regard but still it is not at world levels.
154
Erdal Özdemir, General Manager of Özdemir Group
ERDAL OZDEMIR, GENERAL MANAGER, OZDEMIR GROUP: The sector started to use spring more than foam. The leading ones are Bonnell and bag springs. The manufacturers usually develop springs according to their measurements in the world especially in the UK. They have developed more comfortable systems by using spring in the system what we call “box spring”. At the box spring made in Turkey, a shock-absorber o silencer
is used in bow springs. In the UK and other EU countries they place spring in these box springs as well. In other words, they use four times more springs to increase the comfort. The features used in the system are different than each other. They use hardest ones at the bottom level and softer ones over them to provide better comfort. This is done especially in Greece and some west European countries where luxury mattresses are produced. But it is most common in the UK. Also pocket springs are very common in those regions. The more we go to west from the east the softer the mattresses are. In Turkey, Bonnell springs are used mostly. The usage of pocket springs is also on an increasing trend. The Hercules spring system is mostly used at orthopedic mattresses. These springs are produced ticker than bonnell springs. The diameter of a regular bonnell spring is 2.20 but it is 2.38 at a Hercules spring. When the thickness of a spring increases its flexibility also increases at the same rate. With the same token, when you reduce the diameter of a Hercules spring, the number of spiral increases at the same rate.
155
Better-featured springs needed Springs are already used. We should develop better-featured springs. Pocket spring is a good example for this. There are varieties of these springs depending on their height and thickness. In Turkey there are springs up to 3 cm. The compa-
nies which can do this mean they are already at European standards. Bonnell spring usage is more common in Turkey than foam mattresses but pocket spring usage is more convenient for health because they take the shape of human body.
156
Guangzhou prepares for a bigger and more international interzum Led by Senexpo, a great number of Turkish exhibitors will be at this global show including Sleep Well and Sleep Tech magazines, as the only publications from Turkey. interzum is the most prestigious brand name of the furniture industry momentum for their innovations: The decision-makers, opinion leaders and multipliers in furniture production and interior design are excited to source new products, solutions and concepts. stery materials or cover. Binding tape: Fabric tape used to bind and close the mattress or foundation where the vertical and horizontal panels of outer ticking come together, providing the edge trimming for the mattress or foundation. See Tape and Tape Edge. Body impressions: Indentations occurring on the surface of a mattress over time, due to the compression of materials by the human body. Bonnell: A knotted, round-top, hourglass-shaped steel wire coil. When laced together with crosswire helicals, these coils form the simplest innerspring unit, also referred to as a Bonnell. Border: The vertical side or edge of a mattress or foundation. Prebuilt borders are constructed by stitching together the ticking, foam or other filling materials and a backing material. Commonly quilted or vertical-stitched. Border rod: A heavy gauge wire rod attached to the perimeter of the innerspring unit (top and bot-
tom) by means of a helical wire or metal clips. Boric acid: A chemical additive applied during the garnetting of cotton and/or other fibers to provide cigarette ignition resistance characteristics. Box spring: Also referred to as a “foundation.” A base for an innerspring mattress, consisting of coils or other forms of springs mounted on a wood or metal frame and secured with a wire-interlaced or welded-wire grid, topped with upholstery and insulating materials (felt, urethane or other resilient materials), and covered on the top and sides with ticking and on the bottom with a dust cover. It is an important part of a bed set since it serves as a shock absorber, distributes weight, and supports and interacts with the innerspring mattress to properly support the body. Box-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised surface finishing treatment where a separate, sided and rectangular encasement of
soft materials–usually with a tape edge–is attached via a welt to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Bunk bed: A two-tiered wood or metal frame designed to accommodate two mattresses, typically twin-size, one above the other. Some models allow the upper and lower units to be detached and used as separate beds. Bunkie: A mattress, usually twinsize, and platform base used on bunk beds. Cal 117: Refers to California Technical Bulletin 117, which specifies a vertical flame testing procedure for bedding and furniture component materials. Foam referred to as “Cal 117 foam” has passed this test. Carbon: The principal hardening element in steel. The higher the carbon content, the harder the metal and the more temper it will take, thus giving longer “memory.” Cellulose acetate pad: Woody fiber compacted into a pad and used as an insulator. May be glued or
164
sandwiched between plastic netting to help hold it together. Coil count: The number of coils in an innerspring unit. Though the count can effect weight distribution, it is not the determining factor for firmness. The count is usually based on the number of coils in a full-size unit. Coils: The individual wire springs that form an innerspring unit. See Hourglass, Continuous and Offset Coils. Coir pad: An insulator pad made from coconut husk fiber, garnetted, needled, bonded and pre-cut to size. Comfort system: Refers to the upholstery layers of the mattress, generally consisting of a combination of materials (cover, cushioning, topper pad, insulators, etc.). Conventional bedding products: Mattresses and foundations in the conventional adult sizes of twin, twin extra long, full, full extra long, queen and king. Convertible sofa: A sofa with a bed folded beneath the seating surface, generally consisting of a mattress resting on a metal mechanism. Also called “sleep sofa” or “sofa sleeper.” Convoluted foam: Better known as “egg-crate” foam that is specially cut to produce hills and valleys, giving gentle softness and more surface comfort. Foam surface treatment is available in multiple
patterns. Cornell test: Devised by Cornell University School of Hotel/Motel Administration. Designed to test cosmetic performance of bedding sets, such as body impression or support firmness. Two round surfaces are pounded into the finished product 100,000 times and checked periodically for failure or changes. Corner guards: Molded plastic or metal, (sometimes upholstered) fittings secured to foundation corners to prevent material damage from the bed frame. Cotton felt: Produced by a garnett machine which combs cotton and other fiber binders into a continuous web or layer. Several such layers combined are called cotton “batt”. For compressed cotton felt, thick layers of garnetted cotton fiber are mechanically compressed to reduce body impressions. Cotton linters: The short fibers adhering to the seed after the long staple fiber has been removed in the ginning process. Used in making cotton felt. Cotton pickers: “Fall out” from ginning or garnetting. These shorter staple cotton fibers are blended with linters to produce cotton felt. Crown: A convex surface on a mattress. Mattresses with a half-inch crown are a half-inch thicker at the center than at the edges. Cushioning: Materials that lie above the insulator and below the fabric covering in an innerspring mattress. These materials are typically combinations of polyurethane foam, cotton felt, and/or mademade fibers. Damask: Woven ticking produced on a loom that has yarns running at 90-degree angles to each other, the warp and the weft. The damask
design is woven into the fabric rather than printed on the surface. Density: A measure of weight per cubic volume, usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Often referred to when discussing foam. Double tempering: Heating of wire components, usually in an oven, after they have been given shape or form and have been electronically stress-relieved. Refers to tempering coils as well as border rods and helicals in a complete spring unit. Dual-purpose: A broad term used to include all sleep pieces, which can be converted to other uses, including: convertible sofas, high-risers, daybeds, futons, etc. See Convertible Sofa. Dust cover: A woven or non-woven fabric attached to the underside of a foundation to prevent the collection of dust inside. May also be known as “sheeting” or “cambric.” Edge guard: Generally an extra component added to the edge of a mattress and/or box spring to give support on the sides. Engineered edge support: A special design where the coils on the outer edge of an innerspring unit are actually positioned under the border rod. Most units have the coils recessed from the edge, which can contribute to a “roll out of bed” feeling. Euro-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised, squared-off surface finishing treatment filled with soft comfort layers and attached to the mattress upholstery at the tapeedge. Fabric cover: Cloth or textile material woven, knitted or felted of any fiber or mixture of fibers. Often referred to as “ticking” or mattress fabric.
165
Fales pad: Compressed cotton felt that is stitched together to better retain compression. Fiber pad: Usually refers to manmade or natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.) that are garnetted, needled, carded and/or bonded together. Often used in quilting panels for mattress tops. Filler cloth: Refers to a plain fabric used on the top of a foundation instead of ticking. Commonly offers non-skid characteristics. Flanging: The process whereby a strip of fabric is sewn to the edge of the mattress cover and, in the assembly process, secured to the perimeter of the innerspring unit to prevent the cover and filling materials from shifting. Foam foundation: Consists of a built-up wood slat frame covered with a sheet of cardboard or similar material, topped with at least 2” of foam and covered with ticking.

See Box Spring and Foam Foundation. Futon: A Japanese-style mattress construction, consisting of a cover and filling material, which is typically cotton but can be innerspring and/or foam. Garnetting: A mechanical process whereby short cotton fibers and/ or other fibers are combed into a specific orientation and formed into a thin web, which are then layered to create a batting used as an upholstery material. See Cotton Felt. Gauge, coil: A measurement of the diameter of the steel wire used in coil construction. Wire gauge for innerspring coils range from 12.5 to 17. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. Gel foam: Generally a visco-elastic
foam that is infused with beads or swirls of gel during the foam pouring process. Hair pads: Horse tail or mane, cattle tail or hog hair, which has been processed and curled for use as a mattress or upholstery filler. Hammocking: An undesirable characteristic sometimes associated with worn out or low-end mattresses. When weight is placed in the center, the corners tend to rise and bow in response to deep compression much like a hammock. Terms “dish” and “sagging” also used to describe this phenomenon. Hand: Term used to describe the touch or feel of fabrics (e.g., soft, smooth, etc.). Hand-tied: The process of hand-lacing the coils in a box spring together with twine. Seldom used, this process has been replaced with modern technology and new designs.

Helical: A tightly-coiled, elongated wire used in the manufacture of innerspring units to join individual coils to each other and to the border rod. High-contour mattress: Measures 9” – 13” thick. A mattress under 9” thick is considered “standard”; over 13” thick is considered “custom.” High riser: Usually a frame or sofa with two mattresses of equal size without a backrest. The frame slides out with the lower bed and rises to form a full bed or two single beds. Hog ring: Metal ring used to secure the insulator and flange material to the innerspring unit. Takes its name from its similarity to the metal ring in a hog’s nose. Hourglass coils: Coils that taper inward from top to middle and outward from middle to bottom, thus resembling an hourglass in shape. Employed in bonnell and offset coil
designs. Hybrid: Commonly used industry term for a mattress that combines an innerspring unit with specialty foams such as visco-elastic or latex.
knitting process (tricot) rather than weaving. Designs are printed onto the surface. Lacing wire: Finer gauges of wire used to form helicals.
Ideal weight distribution: Equalization of support in such a way as to eliminate pressure points that cause discomfort resulting in tossing and turning. Best achieved with coil on coil construction and properly designed insulation and cushioning material.
Latex: A flexible foam created from a water dispersion of rubber, either from the rubber tree (natural latex) or a man-made, petroleum-based product (synthetic latex). Most latex used in mattresses today is a combination of natural and synthetic latex rubber.

Molded foam core (for mattresses): A core made of flexible foam is made in molds and used as the main support system in a foam mattress.
construction fabrics are produced. These fabrics are produced by garnetting fibers, entangling or inner-locking these fibers together by a series of needles and then mechanically bonding or fusing them together via heat to produce a fabric without glue or binders. Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing process used to produce insulator pads and non-woven fabrics whereby loose, garnetted fibers are inner-locked by a series of “needles.” This process usually requires additional bonding to keep the fibers in place.
Mounting: Attachment of a box spring unit to a wood or metal frame.
Offset coils: An hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helicals.
Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing process for which high strength, lightweight, non-woven
Orthopedic: Generalized term to imply set gives proper postural alignment and support. Should not
necessarily mean hard or board feeling. Proper support with a degree of comfort to contour to the body is best. Panel: The part of the ticking that constitutes the top sleep surface of a mattress, as well as the bottom of a mattress on a two-sided bed. Pedestal-type metal or wood bed frame: A low-profile bed frame with a solid pedestal base underneath each side of the frame, instead of legs. Pillow-top mattress: A mattress featuring a surface finishing treatment where a separate encasement of soft materials is attached to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Plus 4 edge: Two border rods engineered with one inside of the other and designed so that they make the edge 4% firmer than the balance of the sleep surface to eliminate that “roll out of bed” feeling and edge sag.
168
Straightline deflection: Pertains to mattress innerspring construction and refers to the constant ratio between stress and strain, weight and movement. The benefit is that constant support is provided regardless of the weight applied. No bottoming out of soft spots. Basically it means that two people of unequal weight, sleeping on the same mattress, receive the same support.
Pocketed coil: See Marshall. Polyurethane foam: See Urethane Foam. Print: A ticking fabric, which can be a woven or non-woven sheeting, commonly of synthetic fiber composition, on which a design has been printed. Quilting: The surface treatment in which the cover, foam and/or other fibers are sewn together, using various stitch patterns on quilting machinery, including scroll or panel quilters (single needle) and multi-needle quilters.
Stretch knit: A heavy-weight mattress ticking consisting of a top layer, bottom layer and filling material knitted together and intermittently stitched to keep the filling yarns stable.
Resilience: Surface liveliness and spring-back ability. Rollator test: An approximately 230 lb., six-sided roller is passed across a sleep set to determine the structural strengths or weaknesses of the set and components (i.e., foam or quilt failure, breaking of helicals and coils). The industry standard to duplicate the life of a mattress is 100,000 passes. Rollaway bed/cot: A portable metal bed/cot with a frame that folds in half with the mattress when not in use so it can be rolled away into a closet (or elsewhere) for compact storage. Sheeting: a woven or non-woven fabric other than knits that have a degree of sizing and are somewhat stiff.
spring frame. Also used in a bedstead to support the box spring. Sleep Products Safety Council hangtag: Used voluntarily by bedding producers since 1987, the safety hangtag program provides critical consumer information about the safe use of sleep products. Manufacturers certify that they use the tag only on mattresses that meet the Federal Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads. The tag is available in a hangtag or permanent label. Smooth top: A plain surfaced mattress, neither tufted nor quilted. Also called button-free.
Side rail: A metal or wood rail, which hooks into the outside edges of a headboard and footboard to provide the support base for a foundation and mattress.
Spring wire: Wire made from high carbon steel, characterized by toughness, strength and ductility. Typically furnished in 8 to 18 gauge for bedding industry applications.

Steel unit construction (for box springs): The spring construction used as the main support system inside a box spring.
Slats: Narrow strips of wood used to support the coils in the box
Stitch bonded pad: See Fales Pad.
Super zoned box spring frame: A support, generally wood, attached longitudinally to the underside of a foundation for added support where the main body weight rests. Another important structural point is that the vertical slats are turned on edge for added strength. This is extremely important on queen sizes and for 4-poster beds where typically no center support is provided. Also known as a “center rail.” Tape: Fabric material that closes over the rough-sewn edge where the top and bottom panels are joined to the border of a mattress or box spring. Tape edge: A specified type of sewing machine designed to stitch binding tape around the top and bottom edges of the mattress, joining the panels with the border and closing the mattress. Tempering: Heat treatment of wire to reduce brittleness. Accomplished by electric charge, oven heat or both. Also known as “stress relieved”. Ticking: Fabrics for covering mattresses and foundations. Common
169
types include: stretch knits, woven damasks, knits and nonwovens. Torsion bars: A type of spring system used in box springs characterized by square-shaped wire forms. Trundle bed: A low bed that is rolled under a larger bed. In some constructions, the lower bed springs up to form a full bed or two single beds as in a high riser. Tufting: Consists of passing twine, cords or tape vertically through the mattress from top to bottom, knotting and securing the loops thus formed with tufts, buttons, or lacing. The purpose is to hold the mattress filling in place. Uniflex grid: A steel wire grid used to bridge the “mouth” of the coils on an innerspring unit to prevent “pocketing” of insulation down into the coil and to eliminate “coil feel.” Also helps to distribute the body weight of a person. Urethane foam: Synthetic (chemically foamed) flexible urethane used for mattress cores and as a
cushioning material. As a core, it’s the main support system. Generic term covering both polyester and polyether foams. Ventilator: Metal or plastic screens attached to the sides and sometimes the ends of mattresses to permit the passage of air. Unnecessary with normal high quality materials used today, except for hospital type mattresses with wetproof covers. Visco-elastic foam: Also known as “memory foam.” Slow recovery urethane foams that are temperature sensitive. They conform to the body and distribute pressure according to body heat and dynamics. Waterbed: A sleep system employing a water-filled vinyl bladder as its primary support system. Original models relied on rigid framing to contain the vinyl components and were known as a “hardside”. Newer styles consist of vinyl components (bladder and liner) typically encased in foam and
made to look like a conventional mattress, usually paired with a regular upholstered foundation. Also called a “softside” waterbed. All versions are sometimes referred to as “flotation beds.” Welded grid top: Basic wire welded into a lattice to which box spring coils, formed wire or modules are fastened. Offers even weight distribution, yet allows some flex and give. Wood bed: A bed with a headboard and footboard made of wood, having side rails of wood or metal that support the foundation and mattress. Wood frame (for box springs): The wood frame in a box spring on which the spring construction is mounted. Woven stripe: A once ubiquitous woven ticking with colored stripes. The style was referred to as “ACA”, the traditional designation for the 8 oz. blue- and white-striped ticking that has mostly fallen out of favor and is seldom produced.
