FROM THE EDITOR

What happens in Vegas never stays in Vegas this summer! Whatever happens at Las Vegas Market this summer we will take it out of Vegas and publicize all around the world. We will tell everybody about it. It will not be a secret sin. It will be a well-promoted event. I am en route to that desert to attend Las Vegas Market which is committed to showcasing standard-setting and trend-leading resources in its permanent showrooms and its newly re-imagined temporary exhibition space. This year, approximately 35% of exhibitors in The Pavilions will be first-time exhibitors at Las Vegas Market, bringing an influx of established industry suppliers as well as innovative newcomers. I will be there to organize distribution of our magazines and to cover this international event. We are now offering a rich and very informative content in the magazine as always. One of the best topics has been ‘Mattress Ticking Fabric Industry in Turkey and Around the Globe”. We also have very good coverage profiling the success stories of many leading Turkish and foreign companies in addition to events happening in the industry. The next issue of our magazines will be at our own exhibition, SLEEP WELL EXPO ISTANBUL. The second edition of the show has already exceeded far beyond the first edition and reservations are continuing. The space of last year was sold out and Voli Fair Services, the organizer, has been selling the additional hall now. I am hoping that we can have the pleasure of hosting thousands of our readers at our show and at our stand in the main foyer.

In the modern washing laboratory at the Hohenstein Institute, textiles are tested for their resistance to industrial washing and drying processes.

Maintaining the value of textiles to gain a sustainable advantage Rising wholesale prices are putting the focus on measures to maintain the value of textiles

BÖNNIGHEIM – The weakness of the euro that has been continuing for several months now is making raw materials which are imported into the EU and priced in dollars more expensive. This affects textiles more than anything: the wholesale price for cotton from Asia, when converted into euros, has risen by 15%. This means that measures to ensure that textiles maintain their value and have a long service life are becoming more and more important. Textile service companies work with the conflicting priorities of quality, profitability

and sustainability. The main factors affecting how well textiles maintain their value include the quality of the materials used and whether they are professionally cleaned. To ensure, for example, that leasing textiles remain in use for a long time, it is important that textiles are processed gently. For that reason, the Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim has developed a model specifically for predicting the lifespan and period of use for cotton textiles so that textile service companies can work out their costs for replacing worn out materials.

Hohenstein Institute ®

The test material goes through a definite number of cycles of the cleaning process. In this way the Hohenstein Institute is able to assess various quality criteria independently and from a neutral standpoint.

Selection of material If a textile product is to be in service over a long period, it is essential that high-quality materials be used. It should therefore be considered when the textiles are purchased whether or not they are suitable for leasing. The Hohenstein Quality Standard 701ff provides a good guide. On the basis of this standard, experts in the modern washing laboratory at the Hohenstein Institute test how suitable textiles are for processing in commercial laundries and for leasing. They test the mechanical properties, color-fastness and, optionally, also the fit and wearing comfort. This not only provides an independent assessment at the point when textiles are being selected, but can also help with monitoring the quality of subsequent deliveries. The experts’ extensive knowledge also feeds into the customers’ product development. The Hohenstein Institute’s predictive model can be used to determine the extent to which cotton textiles maintain their value, and also the lifespan and service life of leasing textiles (corporate fashion and work wear). This provides the security that cus-

tomers need when it comes to the longest possible service life. The predictive model is based on the technical guideline values given in technical regulation RAL GZ 992 “Professional Textile Services - Quality Assurance”. The parameters that are examined include whiteness, loss of tear strength and the damage factor (chemical fiber damage).

Cleaning processes When it comes to reprocessing, the Hohenstein Institute evaluates and optimizes the processes so that a hygienic, clean and visually pleasing result is achieved. To ensure that the original values

are maintained, the processes are monitored using test fabrics. The test fabrics go through a defined number of washing and drying cycles in industrial conditions. Quality criteria such as the degree of whiteness are assessed independently by neutral experts. Any existing weaknesses in the process can be identified and the cause eliminated by the laundry. The experts at the Hohenstein Institute provide support that includes testing materials and checking washing processes, product development and advice. This ensures that the economic and technical potential of modern washing technology is fully utilized to maintain the value of textiles.

ChiliPad promotes better sleep

ChiliPad, a dualzone temperaturecontrolled mattress pad, promotes better sleep, health benefits, and saves on cooling costs in upcoming hot summer weather

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) ChiliPad is a temperature-regulated mattress pad that regulates the surface temperature of each side of the bed so that users sleep comfortably all night long. With ChiliPad, users on either side of the bed can pick their ideal sleep temperature and maintain it all night, helping them fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Unlike other products, ChiliPad uses its patented system with water to regulate the temperature which produces a more concentrated temperature than circulated air. Water conducts more than twenty

times better than air, which is why putting your hand in a pot of boiling water would feel hotter than putting your hand in an oven set to 450 degrees. This also allows precise temperature control down to the degree, unlike most methods that use circulated air. “Sleep temperature is actually the number one sleep complaint, even above tossing and turning, Todd Youngblood, Chili Technology founder, said. “It can also be a huge point of contention for couples who have different temperature preferences when sleeping. You spend basically a third of your

24

life sleeping, so we want to make that experience as personalized as possible.” Chili Technology uses water to generate a wide range of in-bed temperature control from 55 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit at a fraction of the cost of air conditioning and using less energy than a light bulb. Similar to the semi-conductor technology that cools a computer, ChiliPad’s water passes through a series of radiator tubes that can’t be felt in the mattress pad itself. Alternative products use air as the temperature moderation medium that results in dramatically reduced temperature range, and no specific temperature settings. ChiliPad’s control unit is virtually silent, and the temperature can be controlled in one-degree increments with a hand-held remote. The benefits of a cooler night’s sleep are medically proven to increase REM and deep sleep during the night, resulting in a better night’s rest. Research suggests that the optimal sleep temperature

is from 60 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature that would be expensive or impossible to achieve with air conditioning, but can easily be controlled with ChiliPad. ChiliPad’s precise temperature control has also been used to soothe symptoms of menopause, endometriosis, fibromyalgia and even hospital patients who are unable to regulate their body temperature.

Bunteks aims 1 million meter

Having a factory in the same location where Bunyan Blanket company was established in 1929, Bunteks has been producing for export markets. General Manager Cemal Aslandag informed about his company and activities.

On production facility and capacity

Cemal AslandaÄ&#x;, General Manager of BĂźnteks

We are producing fabrics in the old facilities of Sumerbank established in 1929. 14 businesses of Sumerbank have been privatized during 1995-1998 period. We bought one of them, the only facility that is still operational, to produce blankets.

33

Now producing 400 thousand meter fabrics monthly, Bunteks aims 1 million by the end of 2016 In 2005 we started to produce fabrics for bed industry. In 2010 we innovated our production machinery and focused on bed fabrics production. The factory has a 30 thousand meter-covered area on 60 thousand meter land. We produce about 400 thousand meter fabrics monthly. Variety in bed fabrics is proliferated recently. We produce economic type of bed fabrics, including anti-bacterial, leak-proof, stain repellant types. I think that some of fabric manufacturers over emphasize properties of their products by mentioning aromatic products. The odor is vanishing in certain period. Human body has unbelievable chemical properties. They exaggerate some of the features.

34

On exports and export markets 95 % of our manufacturing is sold in export markets. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Balkan countries, and England are our export markets.

About the industry Earlier we were not aware of the volume of consumer market in the world. There is a huge demand for beds. There are great potential for further development as long as you can keep the quality and price in balance. There are 12 fold larger companies in the world. Right products and right prices can find their buyers easily.

On product development and plans for the future We as Bunteks are continuously studying the fabrics for further developments in terms of their colors, structures, finishing, touching etc. Our production target for 2015 is 700 thousand meter. Next year it will be 1 million meter. To this aim, we invested about 650 thousand dollars in our machinery park. We mostly produce fabrics made of polyester and polypropylene, both are flammable materials. We apply special treatments to fabrics to make them flame-resistant products by imbedding them into special chemicals. The fabrics are then subjected to heat treatment by 250 degrees centigrade for 2 to 3 seconds. The last stage is packaging of the fabrics.

Önder Honi: “Almost every input for mattress production can be produced in Turkey”

43

There is no need for import for components except some few special products. Even input costs are lowered as a result of increasing competition of suppliers.

Ă–nder Honi is a highly experienced and visionary name in the Turkish mattress industry. Having worked as the vise export manager for many years until recently for the strongest conglomerate in the mattress industry, Honi has a vast accumulation of information, knowledge and experience about world markets, major manufacturers and products. We have conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. Honi for evaluation the industry.

What do you have to say about the future of the mattress industry? How do you evaluate the developments in the sector? While commenting on the mattress industry, it will not be right to think only on Turkey. Many companies in Turkey that produce

mattresses, mattress machinery, and other sleep related products have already become international identities, and they sell their product in the four corners of the world. So, while evaluating the position of the mattress industry, we have to think about the production for domestic demand; those products destined for exports and those companies that supply materials, machinery and accessories for the mattress industry. When only the industry is taken account without thinking about other related sub sectors for the mattress industry, we can easily say that an accelerated growth has been experienced in the main industry during the last decade. There are several reasons for the growth of the mattress industry. Rising welfare of both individuals and the society as a whole and

44

shortening period of replacement of mattresses from 10 to 13 years to 7 to 8 seven years has fuelled the growth of the market. Besides, increasing population and their moves from rural areas to urban living, and even increasing immigrating people from abroad as a result of regional conflicts are other possible reasons for the general outlook in the industry. Growing sizes of houses, separation of living and sleeping rooms even more are other causes for increasing sales of mattresses. Demands of retailers and growing numbers of hostels and hotels have increased the sales. In line with developments in productivity of industrial operations, cost of production is reduced and made it more practical to produce. Mattress producers can buy domestically produced mattress machinery, and can obtain more

45

competitive price quotations for their investments. They are easily supplied by domestic companies with equipment, materials and labor. Almost every input used in the production of mattresses can be produced in Turkey. There is no need for import for these, except some few special products. Even input costs are lowered as a result of increasing competition of suppliers. In addition, the limited demand in the Middle East, Russia and in the neighboring countries in the east of Turkey began to rise thanks to the launching of new generation mattresses. The growing potential in these countries has become a good business opportunity both for the Turkish mattress industry and European producers who want to reach these markets via Turkey.

Rising costs of European made mattresses and semi-finished zipped covers and raw materials have forced companies to procure their needs from Turkey.

Will foreign investors come to Turkey? What will be the long-term effects for this move? Depending on the causes that I mentioned above, we observe that, thanks to the geographic position of Turkey, an important gate for the Middle East markets, the fast development in the industry, foreign investors have began to invest in Turkey. Last year

equities of the two major Turkish mattress producers were bought buy foreign investors. Earlier, a European fabric firm has invested in Turkey and another company have opened office. There is a rumor in the market that the third is on the way. A European bed cover producer stepped in Turkey. An Italian company is seeking to sell machinery in Turkey. Clustering of the industry may cause some problem for them however; in the long run they will have certain advantages. Besides, some famous European mattress companies started to sell their products in Turkey by opening stores, among them are Hastens, Dux, Lamborgini, Magniflex.

46

Do you think that Turkey is a sufficient market for suppliers of mattress industry? Are imported items useful and help the industry to develop more? Mattress industry covers many other products, such as quilts, side closings, bordure, and packaging machinery; raw materials such as bed covers, carcasses and frames; raw materials and accessories such as air capsules, carrying handles, labels, fabrics, springs, foams, latexes, fibers, adhesives, bands, bases, headstands, mechanisms, pillows and quilts. These products may have been sold at even greater volumes both in domestic and export markets and may have much more potential for further growth.

You have become a brand name in the industry. What is your plan for the future? Will you establish your own firm? I spent 15 years in the mattress industry; it is neither too short nor too long. I traveled much in and abroad, participated in fairs and meet with many customers during a fast growing and transition period that moved from furniture to mattresses. I know personally many of the leading names in companies that produce mattresses and supplies. In my ex company we sold our products into 90 countries. I got accumulated knowledge and experiences in mattress fabrics, springs, foams and other materials and about manufacturing processes. I know about companies, producers, sellers, locations, names, qualities, prices, markets, suppliers, etc. operating in the mattress related businesses worldwide. I

keep records for the breakdown of the volumes and kinds of materials used in various parts of the world, preferences for fabric patterns, mattress types and changing trends. I used all these knowledge for the benefits of the company I have been serving. The firm has reached an envying position in the world. Then I began to be helpful to other people in the

sector and in related industries. As you know, I helped and gave advice in the conception of SleepWell and SleepTech magazines and took part in their development and fair organizations. Now I will be active in the industry and in the new companies that I will establish soon. In addition to these, I want to share my knowledge, experiences and views with the readers of SleepWell and SleepTech in their columns.

Latex-pedic offers natural, organic and 100% pure talalay latex mattresses

All Latex-pedic Mattresses use the talalay process, they are all hand-made one at a time, completely reversible, 20-year written warranty, quilted both sides and have handles…

Latex-pedic brand stands for sleep excellence. It offers the best conditions for the user to enjoy a real quality sleep. It is processed with most contemporary method with most ideal materials. The process details follow:

How latex is made Latex Manufacturing Processes The terms “Talalay” and “Dunlop” refer to two different methods of manufacturing Latex Rubber for sleep products. The Dunlop process was developed in 1929. It was the first method used to produce latex material for bedding. As technology progressed, the Talalay process was developed by the Talalay family during World War II. The Talalay process for producing latex is significantly more complex and costly, resulting in softer, more buoyant and luxurious finished products.

Latex formulas Both Talalay and Dunlop processes start with a formula mixture of

liquid latex. These formulas can be any of the following: 100% natural latex rubber (harvested from rubber tree plants) 100% synthetic latex rubber (a man-made molecular copy of natural latex rubber) Blended natural & synthetic latex rubbers (specific blend ratios are proprietary)

Note: there are small amounts of other materials required for processing liquid latex into solid form which are necessary for all latex production. (Ingredients & amounts are proprietary) Latex International Talalay is produced using only 100% Natural or Blended formulations to meet optimum quality standards.

58

Latex Processes TALALAY 1. Liquid latex formulation is poured into a mold and sealed closed 2. Vacuum is generated to disperse liquid latex throughout mold 3. Liquid latex is flash frozen 4. Frozen latex is flash heated to “gel” into permanent solid form 5. Cooled solid latex is removed from mold

DUNLOP 1. Liquid latex formulation is poured onto a long conveyor belt 2. Liquid latex is slowly heated to “gel” into permanent solid form 3. Cooled solid latex is removed from conveyor belt The differences in processing are the two additional steps that occur with talalay process – number2 vacuum & number3 freeze No2 Vacuum – This allows any amount of latex to be evenly distributed throughout the mold creating precise and varied firmness with the finished latex. The more liquid latex that’s poured into the mold the firmer the resulting solid latex. Therefore, if less liquid latex is used, a softer more supple piece of latex results. This differs from Dunlop in that Dunlop process has very little ability to vary the firmness or feel of the finished solid product while maintaining its structural integrity. The liquid formula is poured onto a belt and you get the same, dense piece of latex every time. The only way to soften the feel of Dunlop latex is to add “fillers” into the liquid latex formula which result in solid latex that is flaky and breaks down quickly. No3 Flash Freeze – This provides Talalay with

its uniquely consistent characteristic. Liquid latex is a suspension of rubber particles in water, like a shaken snow globe. Flash freezing prevents the latex particles from settling to the bottom while gelling into a solid product. This means that the resulting piece of solid Talalay latex has the same consistent feel from top to bottom. This differs from Dunlop because Dunlop process does not utilize a freeze step. Therefore, the rubber particles settle to the bottom while the liquid latex is gelling into a solid form, like a snow globe, resulting in a variation of feel from top to bottom. This is not recognizable if the Dunlop latex

What makes Latex International’s talalay so special? The commitment to perfection: From the selection and mixing of raw materials to final product testing and assembly, the entire manufacturing facility utilizes the latest technology to produce the most supple, resilient and comfortable Talalay Latex sleep products in the world. is used as a bottom layer of a mattress but can cause problems if Dunlop pieces are used for pillows or as top layers of a mattress. CONCLUSION - The Talalay process takes four times longer than Dunlop with two additional process steps that improve the consistency, quality and feel of the finished latex. A simple analogy: Talalay latex is like a chocolate soufflé; although the process is long, your end product is a buoyant, airy, complex delight. Dunlop latex is more like a tray of brownies; tasty, but dense and flat in comparison.

iensis tree. These rubber trees have a 25-year productive life and a strong positive effect on the environment as they quickly absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and help reduce greenhouse emissions.

To help understand what makes our Talalay Latex so exceptional, think of an artisan chef creating a light and airy chocolate soufflé! Start with the best ingredients – Latex International utilizes only the highest quality natural and synthetic latex and never introduces fillers that can degrade the feel and durability of our products. Unlike other latex manufacturers, Latex International filters the liquid latex to remove any large particles that might affect the consistency and durability of end products. Use the best recipe – Next, Latex International mixes its premium ingredients into a liquid latex formula or “batter”. Developing different formulas of liquid latex “batter”, Latex International meets specific customer requests for 100% natural or more commonly used blended natural/synthetic latex recipes. Think dark chocolate vs, milk chocolate- it’s a matter of personal taste and desired product attributes. Measure Carefully – As any great baker knows, if you don’t measure correctly the soufflé will fail. The advanced, state of the art automated systems control both the mix of the batter and the precise amount poured into each mold to attain specific results every time.

The Talalay process features natural, biodegradable ingredients that come from renewable resources and water-based raw materials: natural latex, air, and water. The company’s process does not use solvents and does not damage the ozone layer. Its clean and green approach carries through to its end products: Talalay latex contains no toxic chemicals while standard Poly Foam and Memory Foam (visco) can contain as many as seven toxic chemicals*

products are certified OEKO-TEX Class 100; the healthiest classification. This means that our products do not contain allergenic materials that form carcinogenic arylamines of the MAK-groups III A1 and III A2, pesticides and chlorinated phenoles, heavy metals or formaldehyde. The company’s Talalay also meets the standard for skin friendly pH and is free from chloro-organic carriers and biologically active finishes. In other words, Latex International Talalay is the healthiest material you can sleep on.

Responsible •ENERGY: The control systems and state of the art automation allow the company to optimize energy usage at every step of the Talalay process. •EMISSIONS: The manufacturing facility does not emit any harmful elements into the air. Because of its clean process, Latex International’s not required to use any exhaust scrubbers or filtration. Its finished products don’t emit harmful vapors either! Latex International Talalay Latex rubber, unlike memory foam, does not off-gas any harmful chemicals. •SUSTAINABILITY: Latex International uses millions of gallons of natural latex each year. Natural latex is harvested from trees that help “scrub” excess carbon from the air.

Durability Latex International Talalay Latex is 4x more durable than other latex and 20x more durable than traditional bedding foams. At Latex International, we continually ensure that our formulas will last the test of time. Using the standardized ASTM Cornell Indentation test we prove that our

Organic-Cotton 11 - “Extroardinary Pressure Relieving Mattress!”

Talalay outlasts any other material used for bedding today. This is the most rigorous and material damaging ASTM standardized test that exists for bedding components. While Latex International Talalay performs flawlessly over a period of 12 hours representing decades of use, other latex’s break down much more quickly and foams such as memory foam and polyurethane foam actually tear apart within minutes. The strength of our material allows LI to match any warranty that retail stores choose to offer on their products and assures maximum value for consumers.

Breathability Latex International Talalay Latex breathes up to 7x better than other latex or foams for cooler sleep. One of the fastest growing concerns with bedding today is sleeping hot. This is a legitimate concern because not only is it uncomfortable, sleeping too hot interrupts the quality of our sleep as we continuously move to find a cooler spot. This can occur from both mattresses and pillows.

The heightened awareness of sleeping hot is primarily due to increased use of Memory Foam in mattresses. Memory Foam has a collapsible cell structure that traps body heat and radiates it back at us resulting in uncomfortable perspiration. Talalay Latex is sometimes confused with Memory Foam because of extensive Memory Foam advertising. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Talalay Latex rubber cell structure resists collapsing and allows air to circulate. This breathability whisks away our body heat preventing mattresses and pillows from becoming an oven. Latex International has gone one step further and developed Talalay GL which is a unique formulation of Talalay Latex with special phase change properties. Talalay GL actually helps regulate the consistency of body temperature for a temperature neutral sleeping experience.

Mite resistant Most people don’t consider their mattress as a contributing source for respiratory problems and allergic reactions. We think of our bed as a “safe haven”. The reality can be much more yucky. Mold, mildew, bacteria and dust mites love our beds & pillows. We shed millions of microscopic skin cells and perspire nearly 1 pint of water every night. The microscopic skin cells and water vapor fall through the weave of our linens and mattress cover landing on the cushioning layers below where they become a food and water source for mold, mildew, bacteria and dust mites- it can’t be avoided, and it’s gross. Whether your “landing pad” cushion layer is hospitable to these infestations is the controlling factor to the amount of hazardous dust created from your mattress & pillow. Foams such as Memory Foam & Polyurethane Foam are environments where these contaminants thrive, so if they compose the top cushion layers of your mattress you may have a problem. Independent testing shows that Latex International Talalay Latex is mold, mildew & bacteria proofthese organisms simply won’t grow on it. Furthermore, it’s dust mite resistant so these

Toxin free Try to find a healthier bedding material. In a perfect world all bedding products would be as safe as Latex International’s Talalay Latex. The reality is that today’s technology for producing foams like Memory Foam or Polyurethane Foam simply aren’t.

Latex International has been making Talalay pillows and mattress components for over 35 years. Every year millions of products are sold using Latex International Talalay.

Today’s foams may contain any or all of the following, each are known carcinogens. •Tetrachhloroethane •Acetone •Dimethylformamide •Methyl Benzene (tolunlene) •Methyl Dianiline •Tolune-diisocynanate •Vinilideine Chloride Latex International Talalay Latex contains none of these.

Zero cases of allergic reactions to LI products have been reported.

The FDA tracks allergic reactions to latex products in the USA. Not once has there been a report of an allergic reaction attributed to any of Latex International Talalay products.

Consistency testing- mattresses & pillows Latex International is the only latex producer that tests every block of mattress material in 9 separate areas to insure consistency throughout each piece. This means that retailers and consumers can be sure that products delivered or brought home will match the products experienced in the showroom every single time.

“We provide confidence in textiles!”

Interview with Georg Dieners, General Secretary of the OEKO-TEX® Association ZURICH – Since the start of the year, Georg Dieners has been the General Secretary of the International OEKO-TEX® Association based in Zurich (Switzerland). The association of 16 independent textile research and test institutes has been performing harmful substance testing according to the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 since 1992. Other services offered by OEKO-TEX® include STeP (Sustainable Textile Production), a certification system for sustainable textile production, and the “Made in Green” product label. The Association has also launched the MySTeP database so companies can map their individual supply chains and receive support

in establishing more sustainable sourcing. We talked to Georg Dieners about his first months in office and the challenges faced by the textile industry.

In the past, OEKO-TEX® was synonymous with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and its “Confidence in Textiles” label, for companies in the textile industry as well as retailers and consumers. What steps has OEKO-TEX® taken to continue the development of its existing services and supplement them with new products? Over its history, OEKO-TEX® has continuously added certification

systems to its product portfolio. For instance, we have been auditing production facilities with regard to environmental compatibility and social standards since 1995. In that respect, our international institutes have decades of experience in the area of sustainability. We have been able to utilize that experience, combined with feedback from the market, for enhancements and additions to our overall system now consisting of the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, STeP, Made in Green, and MySTeP. We are able to offer our customers a comprehensive and practical solution to the ever-increasing requirements of the textile industry.

68

a neutral testing and certification process. That is what the OEKO-TEX® solutions provide. They reduce complexity for the textile industry and offer consumers, the media, and NGOs the necessary level of traceability and transparency.

How do you rate national initiatives like the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles in Germany?

As a graduate of the Fachhochschule Niederrhein with a focus on textile technology/ textile finishing, as well as having many years of experience in various management positions and companies within the textile sector, Georg Dieners has been Secretary General of the International OEKO-TEX® Association since the start of 2015. He has the broad range of knowledge required for his new role as the OEKO-TEX® Secretary General. ©OEKO-TEX®

To make the textile and clothing industry more sustainable, politicians, NGOs, and the companies in the industry all have to pull in the same direction. Since the action plan was modified in April, significant associations and a large number of notable companies from the textile industry have joined the partnership. That is an

the Partnership members in their efforts to achieve continuous improvements to existing processes and working conditions in textile production around the world. With its comprehensive system, OEKO-TEX® covers the full textile production chain and is therefore an important partner in achieving these goals.

Who, specifically, do your various services appeal to? For manufacturers, quality assurance is paramount, which means harmful substance testing according to the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and production facility audits according to STeP. The closer companies are to the end consumer, the more marketing becomes

What are the specific challenges faced by manufacturers, brands, and retailers? Politicians, the media, and NGOs are pushing for changes in textile production to make the process more socially responsible and environmentally friendly. Consumers themselves are much more conscious of what they are buying. At the same time, supply relationships are very complex and can span across the whole world. They have to become more transparent to increase the level of confidence throughout the industry.

What are the possible solutions and where do you see the role of OEKO-TEX® within this context? Our aim is always to ensure safety and, as a result, confidence. The basis for that may be an exclusion list for harmful substances which some companies have established themselves, like a Restricted Substances List (RSL). Likewise, normative provisions at an international level or industry-based commitments can help to achieve this aim. However, in each case it is vital that there is

important step and we welcome it. To continue our support for this multi-stakeholder approach in the future, the international OEKO-TEX® Association is a member of the Textiles Partnership through the OEKO-TEX® Foundation.

To what extent do the OEKO-TEX® certifications cover the objectives of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles? We share the central objectives of the Partnership and support

important in addition to quality assurance. The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 label helps brands and retailers in particular to prove that their products are harmless to human ecology. The label offers consumers an important aid in their decision-making. If a company also wants to prove that a product has been tested for harmful substances and likewise has been produced sustainably, it can do so with the Made in Green label.

70

In your opinion, what are the most important benefits to companies who work with OEKO-TEX®? OEKO-TEX® has been established at an international level for some time and is extremely prevalent throughout the textile chain. Added to that is the high level of awareness and reputation of our brand, especially with consumers. The individual modules in our testing and certification systems compliment and build upon each other. They are tailored to a whole variety of different needs, from those of manufacturers of raw materials, spinning mills, weaving mills, and finishing facilities to manufacturers of ready-made-clothes, retailers, and brands. Each company can decide which services they want to use. The costs and expenses are then distributed along the production chain, because at each value creation stage, only the value added to the product at that stage is tested in the laboratory.

The expansion of the product range also represents an ongoing challenge. What considerations have been given to this and what are the implications you have taken from them? The most important issue is that the products are clearly positioned and delineated. In our case, the concept behind our range was that the products could build on and interconnect with each other. That allows us to create synergies both for our customers and us. The core of our overall system is and will remain the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. How do you intend to pass the positive values of the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 on to the extended product portfolio? Our whole system is based on the same values: confidence, independence, and passion for textile products. We take this approach at every stage from product development to communications. The aim here is to pass along our

positive image from the harmful substance testing to the whole product family. For us, an important aspect of this is strengthening the “OEKO-TEX®” umbrella brand. We have made it a prominent part of the Made in Green label, along with the “Confidence in Textiles” message. This message provides a perfect summary of what our services stand for: we create confidence in textiles!

Will there also be changes to harmful substance testing based on the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100? The testing and certification system has proven itself over two decades, and even today the concept behind it is still perfectly suited to the market. Except for the established yearly revision of the test criteria, there won’t be any changes in terms of content. We are, however, critically reviewing

the design and language within the actual label at the moment. This is a sensitive area to review because the label is prominent worldwide and enjoys a high level of recognition. We are aware of this and are treating it with due consideration.

What conclusions have you come to after six months in office? We are on the right path. The market feedback is positive and the number of certifications is increasing steadily. Our systems are meeting today’s requirements. Sustainability at all levels is a massive trend of the 21st century, and our new services help our customers achieve more sustainable levels than ever before. That helps us, and our customers, become better equipped for the challenges of the future.

Producing label for mattress manufacturers, Dogus printing house products are seen in 25 countries. General Manager Bilal Karakus, informed about his company and activities.

Bilal Karakus, General Manager of Dogus Ofset

On history of the company Our company is 30 years old in the printing industry in Kayseri. In line with growing numbers of bed producers in the province, we focused on printing labels, booklets and other materials. Now we have a wide range of products in our portfolio. Companies began to export their products and we started to participate in the fair in abroad to enter in export markets. We are producing labels especially and mostly for mattress manufacturers for 20 years.

On the customers of the company We sell to almost all companies

operating in this sector. We have about 60 clients in our customer portfolio list. We try to serve major companies those that pay their dues and emphasize on quality not on price. We use imported materials and quality ink. We sell to both producers of economic and luxury beds. Label is important and is part of the bed’s quality and marketing. It is less costly but has high effect. At showrooms where about fifty beds are exhibited labels signal first about the image and the quality of the product. We mostly render service for high-end mattress manufacturers.

74

On exports of the products Bed industry is more powerful in Europe and in the USA. Producers are more loyal to their suppliers in those countries. We also want to establish sustainable relations with our clients and to work with professional companies. Our products are sold in more than 30 countries; about 25 of them are loyal customers. Though its volume is limited the label-printing segment accounts 15 % of our total production. We also produce other printed materials including brochures, booklets, catalogues and user manuals. We aim to be to sole supplier of bed manufacturers for their printed material needs. We participate in fairs in Germany to promote our business. We got some new customers, one in Holland. We want to increase the number of buyers in abroad. Recently I made a cold visit to a company in Syria, I showed them our productions and in two hours time, we got a deal. Personal visits and contacts are important. A label costs about only one lira, but it’s added value on the product is priceless.

On printing business We try to be a specialized print-

ing house focused on mattresses. We try to get more work from our customers related with all kinds of printing, including cardboard printing. We participate fairs with an aim to find and develop new varieties, new materials and new techniques. We study to print on leather and special effect glossy printing. We try to attract attention.

On new investments, and plans for 2015 2014 was not a good year economically. We kept our sales though it was the worst year of the last 8 years. There were problems in neighboring countries, Syria, Iraq and Azerbaijan, though they are ideal target markets for us. We keep our investments for 2015, and bought three new machines. Now we are able to produce more fantastic printings.

Mattress ticking fabrics in Turkey and around the globe!

81

In today’s competitive bedding market, mattress fabrics “ticking” is a key selling factor for a mattress. Manufacturers of bedding choose ticking fabrics with great care because the ticking identifies the bed... its price, comfort level and quality. As the final component of a mattress, the fabric is used to wrap up everything else and this too can play an important role in your mattress. Ticking, once a low-key element, is playing a bigger role in that process as mattress manufacturers compete harsher for position and attention on today’s highly competitive retail floors. This fabric, called the ticking, can contribute to the luxury, performance, feel and durability of your mattress in several ways besides simply aesthetic appeal.

Turkey, Belgium and Germany lead the way in supplying innovative mattressticking fabrics which improve the quality of mattresses.

They can also play an important role in the breathability of the outer layers of your mattress and aid in temperature regulation. In terms of breathability and moisture and temperature regulation, fabrics made with natural fibers tend to outperform fabrics made with synthetic fibers such as polyester. Some fabrics have special additives to help control temperature and moisture for those who tend to sleep hot. The best mattress ticking fabrics are made of a high quality woven or knit materials that are flexible, durable, comfortable, and breathable and will allow the underlying layers do the job they were designed to do.

Deslee Clama, one of the leading mattress-ticking fabric producers worldwide, offers different alternatives with almost 600 designs annually. Since autumn 2012, Deslee Clama has launched a new collection, twice a year, with a new look and feel for consumers to discover in mattress retail shops worldwide. Their latest collection called “The Imagine” will be seen at Interzum this year. own assortment. The company’s Gel Streeetch has been awarded the interzum award: intelligent material & design 2015 for its unique properties. Gel Streeetch is a newly developed material which improves climate control during sleep thanks to its unique gel coating. The material has the effect of pleasantly cooling the body. Up to 30% more body warmth can be dissipated compared to similar materials, according to the company officials.

One of the main functions of a mattress fabric is to help maintain the shape of the mattress and to help protect the materials in the mattress from exposure to light, ozone, solvents, or other influences that can oxidize or degrade them more quickly. In some cases a fabric can be the weak link in a mattress and wear out before other layers of a mattress. This however is rarely the case with higher quality fabrics. Fabrics also tend to vary widely in

87

their “elasticity” with knitted fabrics being much more elastic than their woven counterparts ... especially those that are tightly woven. Flexible and durable fabrics are an important part of allowing the underlying layers to form a cradle and relieve pressure so it is important that the ticking of your mattress is both durable and flexible. How it is made and how tightly it is attached will also play an important role in altering the qualities of your mattress. Fabric tightness, like quilting, can also be used as a form of zoning however this too is better done in other layers of a

mattress. Fabrics can also be a part of having a more “natural” mattress as there are many available which are “organic” and very high quality. Semi synthetic fabrics like the many types of viscose/rayon materials and natural or organic cotton are popular choices here. Fabrics can also be replaced if they wear out before the layers of a mattress, as there are many sources for zippered mattress replacement covers, with and without quilting layers that can be

used to recover your mattress. This can also be done professionally at a reasonable cost as well so all is not lost if you have high quality layers inside your mattress and the cover wears out before they do.

its integrated factory. Having a total quality concept, our company invests in human resources as well, keeps an eye on technology, and has deep-rooted assets for running in the future. have an organization composed of encircled teams from department to department and from individuals to individuals. It is important to pay their due rights to all people in teams, it is necessary for success to be shared by everybody in the firm. We are focused on solutions by sharing all problems that we have met.

How do you evaluate recent developments in the mattress industry in Turkey? As a manager of one of the leading companies in the sector, would you share your views in this regard? Mattress industry in Turkey is growing fast. 95 % of the products sold in Turkey are spring type, other 5 % share are foam type. Annual growth rate in the market is 7 % on average and the annual sales of the industry is about 69 million dollars. More than half of total exports are delivered to Europe and Middle East, including France, Germany and Holland. According to the data released by some representatives of the industry, about 3 million mattresses are sold to individual buyers and 1 million mattress are sold in bulk to hotels, hostels and hospitals. There are hotels and hospitals investments having about 800 thousand beds capacity, and these are regarded as a symbol for continuous development of the industry in the future. What is your opinion about differences between designs and developments in Turkey and in the world? Is Turkey in a position to set the trends in fabrics for the mattress industries? In a world that global competition gains momentum, it is important for any country to be successful in R&D activities and be a leader in the market. R&D is a job for those disciplined entrepreneurs who

96

have curiosity and inspiration to make changes, and a high ability to act on their own aims. In this matter, education and eco-system for innovations are needed. There are an increasing demand for flexible, disciplined, hard working, and expert people in R&D markets. Countries and companies are trying to be distinguished in the market by having innovative and differentiated products to run ahead of their competitors. Activities in R&D and innovation fields in Turkey are improving at fast pace than the activities in other countries.

To which markets does Ayd覺n Tekstil export its products? Are there any new markets in the horizon? All markets and countries are our target in the world, as Turkey becomes a global player in the world. We have been exporting for many years. By now, our products have been sold in 60 countries. We aimed to enter new markets and to offer our brand and thrust to the people in these markets. England, America, Italy, Middle East, Poland and Russia are our major markets for exports.

Nova S端nger exports springs and foams to 55 countries Producing intermediate products for mattress manufacturers since 2006, Nova S端nger produces for export markets in addition to domestic market.

Murat Zengin, factory manager of Nova

Rendering services to the mattress industry by producing wire, spring and foam for ten years, Nova S端nger Has been continuing to produce innovative products thanks to the investments the company realized last year. Murat Zengin, factory manager of the company said the products they produced had been provided for group companies and for other companies in domestic market and the remaining 70% were exported to 55 countries from African to American continents.

Zengin underlined that the Turkish manufacturers gained more ground in the sector. Murat Zengin answered the questions of Sleep Tech:

How long have you been in mattress industry? Can you tell us some information about the experiences you gained through the years? Established in 2006 on 55.000m2 covered space to produce steel wire, mattress springs and foam, we have been serving the mat-

98

tress industry for 9 years. We are providing these services to our customers with a fully integrated campus. With the investments we have made over the last 1 year, we are able to supply all products relevant to today’s technology. Our recent R&D investments enable us to serve with innovative products according to industry needs.

Can you give us specific information about the foam, properties and variety which you produce? With our foam production of elastic, flex, hard, ultra, soft, feather, hyper soft and memory between 14 and 65 densities, we are one of the leading suppliers of the furniture and mattress industry. We are able to cater to various industry needs by our production, cutting and packaging technologies. Our foam is not only used for the furniture and mattress industry, but also used widely for medical, automotive, textile,

shoes, sport equipment, isolation, and industrial and household-use industries.

You produce springs as well. What are the peculiarities of the springs? We produce steel wire for spring production in various diameters between 1.00 and 5.00mm, properties and chemical compositions. With our bonnel, pocket and micro pocket springs, produced from our wire, we are able to provide comfort, durability, longevity and support during sleeping according to body shape in order to supply perfect sleeping conditions. The bonnel springs are long-lasting and comfortable, while they also form the support structure, applicable to the backbone, which is the main carrier of our body. Pocket springs, as well as a superior support structure due to its independent spring setup, also works as a comfort element. Micro pocket springs, which became prevalent lately,

99

protect the backbone and hinder backaches by a support system that embraces the whole body due to additional independent springs per unit area. In other words, they provide a massage effect due to springs which move in accordance with your body. With our R&D works, we are able to serve the industry with mixed spring systems, which have various properties, distributions and spring types.

Do you use wire and foam in your group company only, or else sell domestic market or do you export them? If you do can you give us information? We use our steel wire, mattress spring and foam products in our group as well as sell them in the export and domestic market. 70% of our steel wire and spring is being exported to 55 different countries. Of our foam products, we export 10% and we sell the remaining 90% in the domestic market as well as to our group companies. Due to our broad export distribution channels, we are able to reach 55 countries in Africa, North and South America, Middle East to Europe. As

packaging is a big disadvantage in transportation for spring and foam products, we have invested in new packaging technologies, which have made it an advantage for us, rather than a disadvantage. Packaging in the form of roll or flat packing technology, which enables 70% saving in volume is a crucial issue in this industry.

What do you think about R&D discrepancy between Turkey and the other countries? What is the place of Turkey in this Industry? According to the UN reports, in cellular rubbers plastics mattress (SITC-821.23) export, the leading country is Poland with 21% share. Turkey is the 30th with 0.2% share. For the export of mattresses from other materials (SITC-821.25), the leading country is China, which makes up 29% of total export. Turkey is the 10th with 3% share. In Turkey, the developments in the production of foam and spring are being followed very closely, When the export market is concerned, Turkey is placed 10th in the world for spring mattresses, but 30th in the world for cellular

rubber plastic mattresses, foam mattresses in other words. Due to spring mattress being more popular in domestic market as well, R&D and design is more developed in this aspect.

How do you supply raw material? Do you import? For steel wire production for springs as well as for foam production, a majority of raw materials is being imported. Lastly, what would you like to add? Our country, which hosts various cultures gained in Anatolia through 1000 years, has an important role reflecting this diversity in the market. Here, looking at the latest developments, it shows that our country is an arbiter in the industry. As the production of foam and spring are in accordance with mattress industry, we expect the growth in the world mattress industry to continue in the medium term. We also expect the Turkish mattress industry to grow in parallel with the world mattress industry in the medium term.

Elektroteks, always active and developing! As a company taking firm steps to be the leading manufacturer for mattress and quilting production technologies by growing its capabilities in multidisciplinary production systems, Elektroteks is a respectful name in the sector. Serkan Güler, Sales manager of Elektroteks Mattress Machinery, underlines the significance of innovation and passion that the company attaches. “Designing the motion, working on the small artistic touches on the harmony, developing things that make

products, thinking differently and innovating the minds; these are all we do and the only source is the passion,” explains Güler and adds, “There are thousands to say to define an unbeatable product, but it is only unbeatable in passionless minds.” “This is the one and only philosophy in Elektroteks company structure and daily brainstorms among the senior technical team. When we talk about some single bolt on the machine, even if we do not mention the name of the

101

machine, everyone understands which bolt it is. It is in between the tea breaks, going home, midnight talks, while discussing economy, politics, any single moment. We enjoy the time all together, and get excited for any single new idea. Elektroteks invested on R&D equipment and its 12 000 sqm new plant this year. The only motto of the company is creating higher tech machines with higher efficiency. With the new equipment and laboratories, implementation of new ideas will be much easier and faster Mr. Guler points out; we have never got the feeling of “enough-done, this dopes us for new ideas. I am giving my thanks to all the team of 98 for their hard work and the passion, again from here.

K覺rayteks fully believes the Sleepwell Expo

Exhibited its new collections and satisfied with the interest in Evteks fair in May, Kirayteks believes to repeat the same success in Sleepwell Expo.

103

Companies are making their plans and preparations for Sleepwell Expo fair that will be held for the second time in Istanbul, October 22-25, 2015. One of them is Kirayteks, a brand in mattress fabric production in Turkey. Onur Kirayoglu, marketing manager of the company says that Sleepwell is a great opportunity for all participants and visitors that will bring dynamism to the industry. Negatively affected by the recent economic and political developments, the company will keep its production without compromising our innovation policy, he says. “We introduced our new fabrics in Istanbul Evteks Fair, one of the major events for mattress fabrics manufacturers in last May. Rising rate of foreign currencies during the last period in global markets has cause some concerns and made it difficult to manage trades. We have been highly satisfied by the interest of our customers they shown to our new collection. Political and economic developments in the world affect negatively on the balance of supply and demand. It is seen that the coming period will be harder then before for our industry. However, we keep our activities without comprising our

innovation and customer satisfaction principles. “ With this motivation we got, we engaged in the activities for participating in Sleepwell Expo fair that will be held for the second time. Its first edition was highly successful. We believe that this will be the most important event for the industry. Perfect location of Turkey as a bridge between Middle East and Europe, its cultural richness and tolerance of the people facilitate to participate and encourage them to visit. In this regard, it will be more rational to participate

in this promising Sleepwell Expo, a great opportunity for all participants and visitors, rather than to take a small part among other fairs crowded by many great brands and companies. I believe that with this fair, our industry will get dynamism and began to grow again.” He said, “I invite all our friends in the world to get to know about recent trends and new products and to talk about business opportunities in the field of upholstery fabrics for mattress industry to visit Sleepwell Expo fair that will be held in Istanbul, 22-25 October.”

Boyçelik stands for mattress comfort! 104

Erol Boydak: “A localization is eye-catching in mattress production in domestic market. Some provinces made progresses at this field and they gained ground but Kayseri is still the leader of this sector.”

105

As one of the leading companies in the mattress spring manufacturing in Turkey, Boyçelik has been continuing to increase mattress comfort. Talking about 2014 Mr. Erol Boydak, general manager of Boyçelik assessed the current situation of the sector, manufacturers and export potential of Turkey. “I guess that daily mattress production in Turkey accounts for 15 thousand units. Around 10 thousand of this figure is manufactured in Kayseri,” says Boydak and claims that there is no reason not to make it 30 thousand. Boydak answers questions of Sleep Well magazine with a professional way:

Can you make an evaluation about the current situation of the sector? The late 2014 and early 2015 period has passed more volatile than we could expect. The reason for this is the fluctuation in prices. Since we produce industrial products, we were affected more during this period.

In the past when devaluation happened the Turkish Lira would lose against the Dollar. This would help us to be more competitive with the part less than raw materials. But now the money of everybody was devaluated. All countries from Iran to Russia experienced this. An advantage has not been formed in the market for anybody. Even if your selling power has increased the purchasing power of your accepter has decreased. This balance made everything unchanged. The customers in Croatia, Russia, Iran and Europe have become to trade in their own regions. We cannot say that export business has ended, however, it decreased considerably. The countries, whose currencies lost ground against the Dollar, were affected from this scene and their adaptation to this situation has become painful. Turkey’s January export figures recorded a fast drop in general. We have been experiencing such a period now.

106

How do you think this situation will be formed in 2015? In fact, it is not easy to forecast this but I believe that the Turkish Lira will continue to lose ground. There is a nominal interest concept representing a rate from 0 to 10%. There is also another concept namely real interest net of inflation. Let’s say that the inflation rate is 8% and interest rate is 10%. The real interest rate of Turkey means 2% then. We hear that the interest rates are high or low. This is not true. What is the scale to measure the rate? There is no such thing to correct everything by reducing the interest rates. Erol Boydak, General Manager of Boyçelik

What contributions the mattress and furniture industry adds to Kayseri? Is this sector improving with the recent activities? First of all, Kayseri has an automation-oriented production under-

standing. This brings high turnover and more units. But the distance has become a problem. There is localization in the furniture industry in domestic market. Izmir has made a progress recently at this manner. Inegol had already made it before. But Kayseri still maintains its leadership in the sector. The main reason of this is the proximity to the raw material sources. The grouping of raw material suppliers such as our company pulls the costs down and leads the way for supplying raw materials cheaper for the manufacturing companies. It seems that Kayseri will not lose its advantage at this manner in the mid-term. I should say that we did not act in the mattress business as early as we did for the furniture industry. The production cost of mattresses is higher than the cost of soft group furniture. The mattress industry is a difficult investment field requiring

107

bed” in marketing. We should fill in this idea too. How should such an important item be for the benefit of our health? Then come the fabric, stuffing materials and springs forward. Fabric is one of the most important materials of mattresses for visuality and for other reasons. A lot of technologies based on R&D studies have been developed in mattress-ticking fabrics. When these come to a certain level then people start considering the inner part of a mattress. Now people have to think two alternatives. Should it be spring or foam? They mostly tend to choose according to prices. When springs become more expensive they tend to foam or vice versa. But spring is preferred more in Turkey because it is less expensive. The higher the springs are, the less stuffing materials are used. This is a correct tending.

manufacturing line and automation systems. Companies have started to consider the mattress business as the second job because furniture promises better profit volumes. Some intelligent companies noticed the gap and started to be expert in the mattress business. I guess the daily quantity in Turkey’s mattress manufacturing is 15 thousand pieces. Probably 10 thousand of this potential is produced in Kayseri. This total figure can easily be doubled.

Mattress shouldn’t be a “promotion” product Mattresses are given free as a promotional item with furniture in some countries. This is not right. It is always pronounced that one third of life is spent in bed. Such a considerable product shouldn’t be cheap. According to a report we prepared in 2010, a sum of 20 dollars is spent for mattress per capita in Canada but it is 3.82 dollars in Turkey. You see in mattress commercials that a human is lying with a straight spine. There is no such thing. A mattress will not change the shape of your body and will react against that. It is impossible. There was an idea in Turkey that a foam mattress is not an ideal mattress. But now we see that expert manufacturers prove that the idea

was not correct. The customers’ awareness should be raised at this point.

A as spring manufacturer, how do you evaluate spring and mattress relations? A mattress is a product bearing some deadlocks in itself. Let’s say that we used the motto of “we spend one third of our lives in

There are a lot of products related to the common spring types of pocket and bonnel springs. We have 5 different alternatives only as bonnel springs. They have fairly big differences between each other. There is a feature of number of spring per square meter. This count is asked when buying mattress in Europe and America. There are some mattresses in England with 10 thousand springs per square meter. It increases the comfort.

108

Individuality at the forefront in mattress We have been experiencing 4 ages in marketing. We had experienced the production age in 1980s. We had sales age in 1990s and marketing in 2000s. Right now we have been experiencing consumer-drive age. We develop customized products according to the needs of the consumer. If a person is suffering back pain and needs hard mattress, we have to offer solution accordingly. There is no such thing as excellent mattress but ideal mattress for the user. Companies in Turkey manufacture their own springs and they believe that this is the correct system. This is one of the biggest problems we are having. They think that they can buy machinery for cheaper prices. But that’s not the case. There is a synchronization of spring machine in itself. It is accounted what kind of a load it can carry from the standpoint of health costs. The

fibers come through her and the wire enters from there and the cost increases. I mean the work is not easy as it appears. Boydak Group has solved this very intelligently. The Group has separated the spring, foam and fabric from each other and has set up a specialty team at each field. Companies operating with this method can easily develop and grow.

KAR-AS gears up in e-trade and abroad Accelerating its e-trade with its “Kargibi” brand, Kar-As is set to widen its network with “Deep Sleep” in abroad

111

Started with production of carcass springs two decades ago, Kar-As has been growing with its two brands now. Working on exports with “Deep Sleep” brand, the company has been growing with its E-trade business on the other hand. Pointing out that they opened their “Kargibi” brand to the world, Erdogan Aslan, Chairman of the Board of Kar-As commented that the mattress industry should have stable manufacturers and stable suppliers in order to be among the top countries of the industry. The interview with Aslan follows: Erdoğan Aslan, Chairman of the Board of Kar-As

How long have you been serving the mattress industry? Since 1995, Kar-as is producing bonnell springs needed by the furniture sector. We sell bonnell springs to the domestic market and abroad. By starting with the bonnell spring production, we have added a bunch of trademarks to Kar-as. One of them just started with mattress production in 2002. We keep it moving by producing adjustable beds that we export abroad with the brand of “Adoze”. By putting other company’s labels on the mattresses, we help their own production.

112

You started E-trade with “Kargibi” brand. What is the final situation of people’s buying mattresses online? Do the consumers prefer buying mattresses online or by going to stores? In addition to Adoze, we produce pocket spring units with the trademark of Besttel located in Industrial Zone. “Besttel” exports %90 of its products. “Kargibi” is another trademark which is in the e-trade sector. At first, online trading was not a good choice for our customers. People were not trusting online trading. Day by day, with the improvement in technology, it is becoming more and more common. This makes us happier. The last brand is called “Deep Sleep”. With this brand, we want to widen our network in foreign countries. When it comes to your other question, I can say that I was not very interested in opening an online trading website. But now as I see the fact that people like online trade, I become more interested. The reason why people like online trading is as follows: they are able to compare, they learn the quality difference with other com ments about the products, they do not waste time, and they have many options.

Can you furnish us with information about your recent investments? In the last years, we have focused on improving the types of our machines. We are adding the new automatic machines to our production unit. As it is known, we hardly find workers with skills in our country. It is also seen that there is a decrease in the loyalty and ambition of the people applying for our company. This is the reason why we tend to be interested in

the machines working automatically. We use those automatic machines for around 8 months and in the next July, the rest of our automatic machines will join in our production.

What would you say about sleep and sleep health? How should a healthy mattress be? As you know the one third of human life is consumed on the mattresses. We believe that the decorations of our bedrooms such as the paint, light, temperature and appearance are important.

113

However, the comfort of our mattress that we sleep on is more important. This is what we pay more attention to. If we do not feel when we wake up in the morning, that means we have health problems or the mattress is not good. Being not good is the common problem of all mattresses. The interesting part of this is the fact that people do not understand the mattress is good. They believe that they have health problems just like everybody else. They do not even realize their back and cervical pains. They think that everybody has the same problems. In contrary, the customers sleeping on our mattresses lose all the pains they have. They tell us that they are not able to feel comfortable in the hotels which do not use our mattresses because our customers already know the comfort of our mattresses. They compare both of the mattresses and see the difference.

What do you think about the recent developments in the Turkish mattress industry? How do you rate the sector compared to other countries? My suggestion is, before buying, customers should learn the quality

of the fabric, microfiber and foam. They should read all of the certificates and using manual. I also want to mention that customers are our helpers. In this case, our customers in Europe are giving us the direction of what to produce. This is how we improve ourselves. Especially in our production unit every month we make new products with new designs. I believe that Turkish companies are in the European market with their cheap products. The European customers want the Turkish companies to produce cheap products with good quality. Exporting Turkish companies are both in the European and Middle-Eastern markets. I cannot tell you what cheap prices will bring us. But, I believe that when we focus on prices and quality, the customers will return even if they leave us for a while. The three criteria are important: 1) Price 2) Quality 3) On time delivery. The companies paying more attention to these three criteria do success in the long term. As you know, it is now easy to reach

the data. Wherever you are in the world, it does not matter. You are able to get the information of the producers, sellers and where it is produced. This information gives us the direction of what we should focus more on. This is called “customer trust”. Everybody can produce. Everybody can sell. The most important is sustainability. This is what we producers have to be.

What final remarks would you like to mention? I want to finally say that I strongly believe us have achieved the success with the three main principles in our companies that we celebrate the 20th year. 1) The trust of our workers and their loyalty. 2) The saying is on the interior wall in the company, which is “Firstly customers, secondly ourselves.” We as a team have learned to apply this saying to business life. 3) We have not made our customers upset. There principles brought us today. We will celebrate many more years without losing our ambition.

114

Turkey runs fast on the way to produce mattress manufacturing machinery

Producers who aim to develop the mattress industry more in Turkey keep their efforts intensively. As one of the most important elements for the industry, mattress machinery manufacturers have also assumed responsibility in this way. We ask Ahmet Kater, proprietor of Katermak company about his views on recent developments in the industry. He said that we got a long way in this regard. Full text of his remarks follows: Ahmet Kater, Owner of Katermak

Turkey will be among the topfive in the world in mattress machinery production “Ten years ago it was only a dream to produce machinery for mattress manufacturers. Now we are producing high technology complex machinery. They are all liked both in domestic and international companies. Mattress machinery manufacturing industry in Turkey has only 20 years of past. Despite this, it has now ranked at a prestigious place in the world. We are as good as those compa-

nies in the world that have been producing machinery for more than 100 years, technically. Turkey may enter in the list of top five in the world in this category.”

Innovation and R&D are needed for progress “The industry is open to innovation and developments. We, as machinery manufacturers have to adapt to these innovations. Otherwise we cannot compete with the world. We make it by emphasizing on production costs and high technology.”

“Uncertainties hinder investments.” “As an industrialists, I saw the year 2015 as the year of uncertainties that investments are postponed. I fear that slowdowns will be experienced in almost all industries. There will be loses, as well. These prevent us to invest more. It is important to save the last half of the year after clouds of uncertainties were removed as soon as possible.”

Comfytex fibers and fabrics upgrade mattresses

Comfytex is excited to introduce revolutionary products as Self Clear, CoolTouch, Silky and Proguard to produce a healthier and cooler sleep environment.

Self Clear: Thanks to the active ingredients contained in a Self Clear fabric has a self-cleaning feature. Self Clean fabrics can clean all types of organic contaminants such as bad odor, bacteria, nicotine, toxins, soot.

Selim Ĺžahin, Vice General Manager of Comfytex

Self Clear is composed of minerals on ground surface and cellulose of timber. It works by using sunlight. Thus, Self Clear is a rayon fiber making the most of the blessings

of nature. Also it is friendly to the earth, the environment and humans. Self Clear is not removed by daily use and washing because photo-catalytic titanium oxide is directly mixed into rayon. The photo-catalytic effect does not change. It lasts as long as the fiber is exposed to light. Characteristics of rayon itself remain unchanged.

117

Antibacterial: Self Clear kills bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, E.coli bacillus and MRSA by simply being exposed to sunlight for five hours in fine weather. Deodorization: Self Clear deodorizes unpleasant odors, such as ammonia, acetic acid, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and trimethylamin. The deodorization effect is permanent. Dirt decomposition: There are two types of dirt that adhere to textiles; dirt generated from inside the body, such as secretions like sweat, urine, blood, and sebum; and dirt coming from outside, for example sand, mud, fruit juice and oil. In particular, sebum secreted from body, consisting of oil and protein, cannot be easily removed by washing. By being exposed to light, Self Clear decomposes such dirt ingredients.

Silky: Silk protein contains 18 amino acids including essential amino acids. Silk protein has a strong affinity to keratin. Keratin is the structural material forming the top layer of the skin. With this structure, the silk protein has biocompatible property. Silk protein forms a protective layer on the skin surface. Because of some additional properties like, gelling ability, moisture retention capacity, and skin adhesion, it has wide applications in medical and cosmetics. Silk protein has been used in skin, hair cosmetics. Silk protein when used in the form of lotion, cream and ointment shows increased skin elasticity, anti-wrinkle and anti-aging effects. •Silk protein acts as moisturizer by prevent water loss from the skin. •Silk protein can form a film on the surface of skin so that the water in skin can be preserved. •Silk protein gives skin softness and smoothness

118

•Yet even after repeated washing, its effect remains almost the same. •It gives a gentle, soft silky touch to fabric CoolTouch: During sleep, temperature control is the number one priority. No matter what the season, temperature sensitive sleepers are looking for a solution to keep them cool. Comfytex is excited to introduce CoolTouch with rapid chill cooling fibers to produce a healthier and cooler sleep environment. Comfytex CoolTouch disperses body heat throughout the surface of the mattress at a rate many times faster than that of regular polyester, focusing solely on heat reduction along the sleep surface through a combination of nano-technology. Comfytex CoolTouch by using the special cooling mineral and build it inside fiber to slow the speed of fabric temperature increase after touch heat source (like skin) and radiate the heat quickly to keep fabric cool. The unique tunneling effect of the mineral based fiber prevents heat accumulation in the material surrounding the body and providing a refreshingly cooler sleep surface. Comfytex CoolTouch fibers are a crushed mineral infused textile, meaning the cooling effects of this material are literally built into the fabric and will not wash out, lasting the lifetime of mattress. Comfytex CoolTouch has a cooling effect for more comfortable sleep. This material is long lasting, lightweight, breathable. This is done without chemical treatment. It is a natural property of the fabric.

Proguard: Now you can live, work or play with less worry about your bedding, home fashions and the planet. New Proguard ticking shield and clean portfolio is advanced care for a better planet. Proguard fends off soil, stains and spills on mattress without impacting the fabric’s weight, look, feel, color or breathability. Proguard makes it easier to keep bedding looking fresh and clean. Proguard fights off dry soil and nasty, unpredictable spills and splashes, allowing liquids to bead up and roll off. Liquid spills can easily be wiped away when blotted with a clean cloth, and dry soil can be brushed off easily.

•Dirt repelling: Watery dirt such as sludge and mud are much less able to adhere to the fabric. •Ecological: Proguard ticking needs less energy and water for cleaning. •Easy Care: Proguard makes simpler to clean •Universal: Proguard is effective on many types of fiber and many blends. •Washable and easy care: Proguard has outstanding washing resistance.

The benefits of Proguard:

•Breathable: The breathability is not affected and the feel remains pleasantly soft.

•Water repelling: Water droplets run off simply and easily.

•Abrasion resistant: Proguard has high abrasion resistance.

DesleeClama introduces stylish “imagine” collection with ingenious iDC App and iDC Designer Software at Interzum 2015

During the Interzum Trade Fair 2015 in Cologne, DesleeClama launched its new collection with the name IMAGINE. Five key styles mixed with emerging trends cover the world of different tastes. The DesleeClama’s design team is always on the outlook for upcoming fashion trends in different market segments globally, which drives them to compose a wide variety of brand-new looks that meet every customer or consumer in his own style.

Five distinct trend styles that cover the world The five distinct trend styles of the DesleeClama Collection are Pure, Classic-Transitional, Fusion, Romantic-Wellness and Haute Couture. These styles help the customer create a total sleeping concept, including border, upholstery and mattress fabrics. Within each of these styles, the DesleeClama design team has developed several themes or stories that translate perfectly the hot trends of today and tomorrow.

121

PURE stands for soft elegance, subtle motifs, gray and blue, balance and structures. For instance, the theme “Dandy Patterns” refers to an upcoming trend of classic male patterns in unusual contexts: the random shapes on men’s ties and suits are now printed on a vase, carpet or sofa to create a fresh look.

Cüneyt Kapaklı, Middle East Sales Manager

themes is “Memento”, which is the answer to the zoning of the mattresses. The fabrics in the centre of the mattress have a lot of volume, whereas they are much smaller in the head and foot zones. The designs underline these zones with abstract, displaying waves and small geometric patterns.

CLASSIC-TRANSITIONAL alludes to earth tones, classical motifs, tranquillity, style & class and medallions. A good example is the “Neo Paisley” theme that balances large-scale designs with a focus on detail. These heavy weight fabrics pay tribute to their Persian origins and boast highly luxurious looks.

ROMANTIC-WELLNESS reflects soft pastels, nature patterns, wavy designs and romance. Themes as “Distinct Flowers” with the oral patterns and “Natural Motives” inspired by nature set the tone. A big trend in interior design is “Patchwork” or designs that merge flower patterns with geometric structures.

FUSION brings up adjectives such as modern, bright, straightforward, playful; has linear motifs and refers to youth. One of the remarkable

and silver, but different this season is that the theme “Glitter Glory” brings more striking designs in straightforward color combinations combined with that glittery touch of gold and silver. Another big worldwide trend is “Gradient” or effects that fade out from one color into another, or from a color into a plain white surface.

reached from anywhere in the world. In some cases the App already serves as some kind of virtual showroom that guides any kind of customer, even the end user, through the collection. “The integration of different design and manufacturing steps into one application in the cloud will help customers streamline their design process and save both time and money”, emphasizes Ben Ducatteeuw, Managing Director, DesleeClama iDC Innovation & Design Center. Once the basic mattress concept is ready, sales people can easily configure the mattress within the defined custom-

ization constraints. Detailed design proposals can be elaborated together with mattress manufacturers. This gives them instantly a highly realistic 3D-image of the final product, either on screen or online, and a price quote based on the options that are chosen. In this way, customers get a clear view on how the full package of designs for mattress panels, borders, headboards and bases will look like on a real bed. The iDC App enables the mattress manufacturer or retailer to freewheel about the complete concept that they had in mind, and mix and match infinitely.

Brand-new iDC Designer Software Recently, DesleeClama also developed the cloud-based iDC Designer Software that enables designers to create a mattress concept from scratch. Thanks to this tool, it is possible to place the complete concept in a wider context by choosing the desired height, corners, edges and quilt patterns of the mattress. Within a few clicks the mattress base is ready to be dressed up. Select

the fabric, borders, zippers, tubes, etc. in the shape, color and texture you prefer. This innovation was one of the reasons why DesleeClama in 2014 was nominated ‘Hidden Champion’ by Voka (the Flemish Chamber of Commerce) and Professor Hermann Simon, an authority in business management. Hidden Champions continuously question themselves on how they can best serve their niche market, adapt to new trends and stay strong amid global competition.

134

In 2015 interzum once again lived up to its reputation as a trade fair of innovations to provide inspiration to the industry with the trends displayed. Exhibitors inspired their visitors as much with global product launches as with trend-setting equipment and materials for common as well as unusual purposes. The fair closed on 8 May 2015 with excellent results. More than 57,500 industry visitors from 143 countries (an increase of 8.5 percent) made for an outstanding atmosphere at the exhibitor stands over the four days of the fair. This is extremely rewarding in light

of the Germany-wide train strike which was ongoing for the entire duration of the fair. At very short notice, Koelnmesse organized a shuttle service from Frankfurt and DĂźsseldorf airports as well as from the East Westphalia furniture region. The service was very well received and ensured convenient transport for visitors to Cologne. “The increase in visitors did not just reflect the appeal of the innovations and solutions showcased by our exhibitors but also emphasizes the importance of interzum for the industry. There is no other event in the world which generates as

much important momentum for this industry, in terms of both innovations presented and actual business conducted, as interzum does, said Katharina C. Hamma, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse, in summary. interzum thus seamlessly ties in with the outstanding results of ORGATEC, imm cologne and LivingKitchen and Koelnmesse underlines its position as the leading exhibition location worldwide for furniture and interior design. With 41,000 visitors from abroad (an increase of 17 percent), interzum 2015 was once again a very international event. For one,

The atmosphere at interzum was one characterized by business and networking. The exhibiting companies unanimously reported excellent contact with representatives from all sales channels - at a very high level. This was confirmed by the preliminary visitor survey: almost 64 percent of visitors questioned revealed that they were either sole or joint decision-makers when it comes to purchasing and procurement decisions within their

DesleeClama Award respective companies. Based on the excellent atmosphere at interzum, post-fair business is generally expected to be good. With 1,561 companies from 57 countries in attendance, not only

Proud laureates: awards ceremony for the "interzum award: intelligent material & design 2015". Turkey’s Boyteks wins in bedding category

Every two years, Koelnmesse collaborates with Red Dot to host the “interzum award: intelligent material & design”. The competition awards the best designs in the international supplier industry for the furniture and interior decorating industries. On 4 May 2015, the proud laureates were given their awards on the occasion of the start of the interzum cologne. Around 500 manufacturers, designers and marketing decision makers converged at the Koelnmesse site to celebrate the high point of the interzum award 2015 at the

interzum Party. This year, a total of 269 entries from 21 countries were submitted. There was great demand for innovative designs for the furniture industry and interior decorating: from “Materials and surfaces” to “Fittings, glass and lighting” to “Upholstery manufacture and bedding”. The jury, comprising five renowned design experts, gave awards to 59 of the entries. These success stories were duly celebrated at the awards ceremony on the evening of 4 May 2015 in the Theater am Tanzbrunnen in

Cologne, Germany. As part of an exclusive reception, Katharina C. Hamma, COO of Koelnmesse, and Vito Ora¸em, Managing Director Design Zentrum NRW and Red Dot Design Museum, handed the well-earned certificates over to the prizewinners of the “High Product Quality” distinction. The jury awarded this title for special design achievements in terms of form and function. 50 products convinced the experts with their excellent design and thus succeeded in standing out from comparable products. The top award in the competition was announced at the end of the awards ceremony. Only nine products were honoured as “Best of the Best”. By awarding this title the panel of experts appreciates products which set new standards in their industry with their exceptional and ground-breaking design in terms of form and function. The best of the participants in 2015 include Fraunhofer-Institut für

Holzforschung WKI, Richter akustik & design GmbH & Co. KG, Schock Metallwerk GmbH and OCTO Actuators GmbH (Bionical Design GmbH) from Germany as well as Organoid Technologies GmbH from Austria and Swiss manufacturer Lamello AG. Moreover, ALPI SPA and Arpa Industriale S.p.A. from Italy as well as DesleeClama from Belgium secured the coveted industry label in the competition with their products. The cultural highlight of the evening was provided by Oleg Basanov with a torch. By painting art pieces with light the performer enthused the award winners and the audience alike. In addition, in a panel discussion presented by Anne Rothäuser, the jury members Martin Ballendat, Dick Spierenburg und Birgit Schwarzkopf spoke about their personal impressions, trends that they uncovered during the competition and the challenges they see for the future of design.

Mattress Industry Terms 156

Source: ISPA, International Sleep Products Association

Adjustable base: An electro-mechanical or manual bed frame construction that permits the raising and lowering of the head and/or foot portions of the mattress. Airbed: An air mattress with a core that is an air-filled vinyl bladder. Better airbeds are multichambered, covered with cushioning, upholstered with ticking and sold with a foundation. Anti-microbial fiber and foam: Treatment that inhibits the growth of microbial contaminates. Backing: Any fabric or sheeting material that is used during quilting to

anchor the stitches. Batting: See Cotton Felt. Bedding: Commonly used as a generic term for a mattress and foundation set, but may also apply to accessory items such as blankets, sheets, pillows, comforters, mattress pads, etc. Bedding ensemble: A complete sleep support system, consisting of a metal frame or a bed, a foundation and a mattress set. Bed frame: A metal or wood frame with legs used to support a mattress and foundation. Conven-

tional height is 7-1/4 inches and the low-profile version is 5-3/4 inches when measured from the floor to the bottom of the foundation. Generally a headboard can be attached. Metal frames are sometimes known as a “Hollywood frame. Bedsprings: Open-spring or wire fabric box springs without upholstery materials or cover. Binding tape: Fabric tape used to bind and close the mattress or foundation where the vertical and horizontal panels of outer ticking come together, providing the edge

157

trimming for the mattress or foundation. See Tape and Tape Edge. Body impressions: Indentations occurring on the surface of a mattress over time, due to the compression of materials by the human body. Bonnell: A knotted, round-top, hourglass-shaped steel wire coil. When laced together with crosswire helicals, these coils form the simplest innerspring unit, also referred to as a Bonnell. Border: The vertical side or edge of a mattress or foundation. Prebuilt borders are constructed by stitching together the ticking, foam or other filling materials and a backing material. Commonly quilted or vertical-stitched. Border rod: A heavy gauge wire rod attached to the perimeter of the innerspring unit (top and bottom) by means of a helical wire or metal clips. Boric acid: A chemical additive applied during the garnetting of cotton and/or other fibers to provide cigarette ignition resistance characteristics. Box spring: Also referred to as a “foundation.” A base for an innerspring mattress, consisting

of coils or other forms of springs mounted on a wood or metal frame and secured with a wire-interlaced or welded-wire grid, topped with upholstery and insulating materials (felt, urethane or other resilient materials), and covered on the top and sides with ticking and on the bottom with a dust cover. It is an important part of a bed set since it serves as a shock absorber, distributes weight, and supports and interacts with the innerspring mattress to properly support the body. Box-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised surface finishing treatment where a separate, sided and rectangular encasement of soft materials–usually with a tape edge–is attached via a welt to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Bunk bed: A two-tiered wood or metal frame designed to accommodate two mattresses, typically twin-size, one above the other. Some models allow the upper and lower units to be detached and used as separate beds. Bunkie: A mattress, usually twinsize, and platform base used on bunk beds.

Cal 117: Refers to California Technical Bulletin 117, which specifies a vertical flame testing procedure for bedding and furniture component materials. Foam referred to as “Cal 117 foam” has passed this test. Carbon: The principal hardening element in steel. The higher the carbon content, the harder the metal and the more temper it will take, thus giving longer “memory.” Cellulose acetate pad: Woody fiber compacted into a pad and used as an insulator. May be glued or sandwiched between plastic netting to help hold it together. Coil count: The number of coils in an innerspring unit. Though the count can effect weight distribution, it is not the determining factor for firmness. The count is usually based on the number of coils in a full-size unit. Coils: The individual wire springs that form an innerspring unit. See Hourglass, Continuous and Offset Coils. Coir pad: An insulator pad made from coconut husk fiber, garnetted, needled, bonded and pre-cut to size. Comfort system: Refers to the

158

upholstery layers of the mattress, generally consisting of a combination of materials (cover, cushioning, topper pad, insulators, etc.). Conjugate polyester fiber: Spirally crimped fiber that is crimped chemically rather than thermally. Is very durable and resilient. Continuous coils: An innerspring configuration in which the rows of coils are formed from a single piece of wire.

the ginning process. Used in making cotton felt.

can contribute to a “roll out of bed” feeling.

Cotton pickers: “Fall out” from ginning or garnetting. These shorter staple cotton fibers are blended with linters to produce cotton felt.

Euro-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised, squared-off surface finishing treatment filled with soft comfort layers and attached to the mattress upholstery at the tapeedge.

Crown: A convex surface on a mattress. Mattresses with a half-inch crown are a half-inch thicker at the center than at the edges.

Conventional bedding products: Mattresses and foundations in the conventional adult sizes of twin, twin extra long, full, full extra long, queen and king.

Cushioning: Materials that lie above the insulator and below the fabric covering in an innerspring mattress. These materials are typically combinations of polyurethane foam, cotton felt, and/or mademade fibers.

Convertible sofa: A sofa with a bed folded beneath the seating surface, generally consisting of a mattress resting on a metal mechanism. Also called “sleep sofa” or “sofa sleeper.”

Damask: Woven ticking produced on a loom that has yarns running at 90-degree angles to each other, the warp and the weft. The damask design is woven into the fabric rather than printed on the surface.

Convoluted foam: Better known as “egg-crate” foam that is specially cut to produce hills and valleys, giving gentle softness and more surface comfort. Foam surface treatment is available in multiple patterns.

Density: A measure of weight per cubic volume, usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Often referred to when discussing foam.

Cornell test: Devised by Cornell University School of Hotel/Motel Administration. Designed to test cosmetic performance of bedding sets, such as body impression or support firmness. Two round surfaces are pounded into the finished product 100,000 times and checked periodically for failure or changes. Corner guards: Molded plastic or metal, (sometimes upholstered) fittings secured to foundation corners to prevent material damage from the bed frame. Cotton felt: Produced by a garnett machine which combs cotton and other fiber binders into a continuous web or layer. Several such layers combined are called cotton “batt”. For compressed cotton felt, thick layers of garnetted cotton fiber are mechanically compressed to reduce body impressions. Cotton linters: The short fibers adhering to the seed after the long staple fiber has been removed in

Double tempering: Heating of wire components, usually in an oven, after they have been given shape or form and have been electronically stress-relieved. Refers to tempering coils as well as border rods and helicals in a complete spring unit. Dual-purpose: A broad term used to include all sleep pieces, which can be converted to other uses, including: convertible sofas, high-risers, daybeds, futons, etc. See Convertible Sofa. Dust cover: A woven or non-woven fabric attached to the underside of a foundation to prevent the collection of dust inside. May also be known as “sheeting” or “cambric.” Edge guard: Generally an extra component added to the edge of a mattress and/or box spring to give support on the sides. Engineered edge support: A special design where the coils on the outer edge of an innerspring unit are actually positioned under the border rod. Most units have the coils recessed from the edge, which

Fabric cover: Cloth or textile material woven, knitted or felted of any fiber or mixture of fibers. Often referred to as “ticking” or mattress fabric. Fales pad: Compressed cotton felt that is stitched together to better retain compression. Fiber pad: Usually refers to manmade or natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.) that are garnetted, needled, carded and/or bonded together. Often used in quilting panels for mattress tops. Filler cloth: Refers to a plain fabric used on the top of a foundation instead of ticking. Commonly offers non-skid characteristics. Flanging: The process whereby a strip of fabric is sewn to the edge of the mattress cover and, in the assembly process, secured to the perimeter of the innerspring unit to prevent the cover and filling materials from shifting. Foam foundation: Consists of a built-up wood slat frame covered with a sheet of cardboard or similar material, topped with at least 2” of foam and covered with ticking. Foundation: Any base or support for a mattress, sometimes used as a generic term for box spring. A foundation may be made entirely of wood or a combination of wood and steel or steel springs. See Box Spring and Foam Foundation. Futon: A Japanese-style mattress construction, consisting of a cover and filling material, which is typically cotton but can be innerspring and/or foam. Garnetting: A mechanical process whereby short cotton fibers and/ or other fibers are combed into a specific orientation and formed into a thin web, which are then layered

159

to create a batting used as an upholstery material. See Cotton Felt. Gauge, coil: A measurement of the diameter of the steel wire used in coil construction. Wire gauge for innerspring coils range from 12.5 to 17. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. Gel foam: Generally a visco-elastic foam that is infused with beads or swirls of gel during the foam pouring process. Hair pads: Horse tail or mane, cattle tail or hog hair, which has been processed and curled for use as a mattress or upholstery filler. Hammocking: An undesirable characteristic sometimes associated with worn out or low-end mattresses. When weight is placed in the center, the corners tend to rise and bow in response to deep compression much like a hammock. Terms “dish” and “sagging” also used to describe this phenomenon. Hand: Term used to describe the touch or feel of fabrics (e.g., soft, smooth, etc.). Hand-tied: The process of hand-lacing the coils in a box spring together with twine. Seldom used, this process has been replaced with modern technology and new designs. Headboard: An upright unit of wood, metal, plastic, or upholstered material, to be attached at the head of a bed, usually with the bed frame. Helical: A tightly-coiled, elongated wire used in the manufacture of innerspring units to join individual coils to each other and to the border rod. High-contour mattress: Measures 9” – 13” thick. A mattress under 9” thick is considered “standard”; over 13” thick is considered “custom.” High riser: Usually a frame or sofa with two mattresses of equal size without a backrest. The frame slides out with the lower bed and rises to form a full bed or two single beds. Hog ring: Metal ring used to

secure the insulator and flange material to the innerspring unit. Takes its name from its similarity to the metal ring in a hog’s nose. Hourglass coils: Coils that taper inward from top to middle and outward from middle to bottom, thus resembling an hourglass in shape. Employed in bonnell and offset coil designs. Hybrid: Commonly used industry term for a mattress that combines an innerspring unit with specialty foams such as visco-elastic or latex. Ideal weight distribution: Equalization of support in such a way as to eliminate pressure points that cause discomfort resulting in tossing and turning. Best achieved with coil on coil construction and properly designed insulation and cushioning material. Innerspring unit construction (for mattresses): The spring construction used as the main support system inside an innerspring mattress. Some common types are: pocketed (see Marshall) and all metal (i.e., bonnell, offset and continuous wire). Insulator: Any material used on top and bottom of an innerspring unit to prevent the upholstery layers from cupping down into the coils. Some common types are: a fiber pad, non-woven fabric, netting, wire mesh or foam pad. Knit: A basic polyester or nylon ticking fabric produced through a

knitting process (tricot) rather than weaving. Designs are printed onto the surface. Lacing wire: Finer gauges of wire used to form helicals. Latex: A flexible foam created from a water dispersion of rubber, either from the rubber tree (natural latex) or a man-made, petroleum-based product (synthetic latex). Most latex used in mattresses today is a combination of natural and synthetic latex rubber. LFK: An unknotted offset coil with a cylindrical or columnar shape. Link fabric: A wire foundation for bedsprings, cots, studio couches, sofabed mechanisms and gliders. So called because the fabric is a succession of metal links. Marshall: A type of innerspring construction in which thin gauge, barrel-shaped, knotless coils are encased in fabric pockets. Also known as “pocketed coils.” Mattress: A manufactured product to sleep on, consisting of various resilient materials covered with an outer ticking. Comes from the Arabic term “matrah” meaning to throw down. Early Arabs traveled with their bedding and threw it down on the ground or floor at night. Memory: The ability of tempered steel, foam or some fabrics to return to their original state after being compressed or stretched. Mesh: Plastic netting generally

160

stretched across the face of an innerspring unit as an insulator. Microcoils: A low-profile metal spring unit, typically with individually wrapped coils, used in the top comfort layers of a mattress. Molded foam core (for mattresses): A core made of flexible foam is made in molds and used as the main support system in a foam mattress. Mounting: Attachment of a box spring unit to a wood or metal frame. Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing process for which high strength, lightweight, non-woven construction fabrics are produced. These fabrics are produced by garnetting fibers, entangling or inner-locking these fibers together by a series of needles and then mechanically bonding or fusing them together via heat to produce a fabric without glue or binders. Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing process used to produce insulator pads and non-woven fabrics whereby loose, garnetted fibers are inner-locked by a series of “needles.” This process usually requires additional bonding to keep the fibers in place. Offset coils: An hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helicals. Orthopedic: Generalized term to imply set gives proper postural alignment and support. Should not necessarily mean hard or board feeling. Proper support with a degree of comfort to contour to the body is best. Panel: The part of the ticking that constitutes the top sleep surface of a mattress, as well as the bottom of a mattress on a two-sided bed. Pedestal-type metal or wood bed frame: A low-profile bed frame with a solid pedestal base underneath each side of the frame, instead of legs.

Pillow-top mattress: A mattress featuring a surface finishing treatment where a separate encasement of soft materials is attached to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery. Plus 4 edge: Two border rods engineered with one inside of the other and designed so that they make the edge 4% firmer than the balance of the sleep surface to eliminate that “roll out of bed” feeling and edge sag. Pocketed coil: See Marshall. Polyurethane foam: See Urethane Foam. Print: A ticking fabric, which can be a woven or non-woven sheeting, commonly of synthetic fiber composition, on which a design has been printed. Quilting: The surface treatment in which the cover, foam and/or other fibers are sewn together, using various stitch patterns on quilting machinery, including scroll or panel quilters (single needle) and multi-needle quilters. Resilience: Surface liveliness and spring-back ability. Rollator test: An approximately 230 lb., six-sided roller is passed across a sleep set to determine the structural strengths or weaknesses of the set and components (i.e., foam or quilt failure, breaking of helicals and coils). The industry standard to duplicate the life of a mattress is 100,000 passes. Rollaway bed/cot: A portable met-

al bed/cot with a frame that folds in half with the mattress when not in use so it can be rolled away into a closet (or elsewhere) for compact storage. Sheeting: a woven or non-woven fabric other than knits that have a degree of sizing and are somewhat stiff. Side rail: A metal or wood rail, which hooks into the outside edges of a headboard and footboard to provide the support base for a foundation and mattress. Sisal: A product of the henequen plant formed into a pad and used as an insulator. Named after the. small port of Sisal in Yucatan. Slats: Narrow strips of wood used to support the coils in the box spring frame. Also used in a bedstead to support the box spring. Sleep Products Safety Council hangtag: Used voluntarily by bedding producers since 1987, the safety hangtag program provides critical consumer information about the safe use of sleep products. Manufacturers certify that they use the tag only on mattresses that meet the Federal Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads. The tag is available in a hangtag or permanent label. Smooth top: A plain surfaced mattress, neither tufted nor quilted. Also called button-free. Spring wire: Wire made from high carbon steel, characterized by toughness, strength and ductility. Typically furnished in 8 to 18 gauge

161

for bedding industry applications. Steel unit construction (for box springs): The spring construction used as the main support system inside a box spring. Stitch bonded pad: See Fales Pad. Straightline deflection: Pertains to mattress innerspring construction and refers to the constant ratio between stress and strain, weight and movement. The benefit is that constant support is provided regardless of the weight applied. No bottoming out of soft spots. Basically it means that two people of unequal weight, sleeping on the same mattress, receive the same support. Stretch knit: A heavy-weight mattress ticking consisting of a top layer, bottom layer and filling material knitted together and intermittently stitched to keep the filling yarns stable. Super zoned box spring frame: A support, generally wood, attached longitudinally to the underside of a foundation for added support where the main body weight rests. Another important structural point is that the vertical slats are turned on edge for added strength. This is extremely important on queen sizes and for 4-poster beds where typically no center support is provided. Also known as a “center rail.” Tape: Fabric material that closes over the rough-sewn edge where the top and bottom panels are joined to the border of a mattress or box spring. Tape edge: A specified type of sewing machine designed to stitch binding tape around the top and bottom edges of the mattress, joining the panels with the border and closing the mattress.

damasks, knits and nonwovens. Torsion bars: A type of spring system used in box springs characterized by square-shaped wire forms. Trundle bed: A low bed that is rolled under a larger bed. In some constructions, the lower bed springs up to form a full bed or two single beds as in a high riser. Tufting: Consists of passing twine, cords or tape vertically through the mattress from top to bottom, knotting and securing the loops thus formed with tufts, buttons, or lacing. The purpose is to hold the mattress filling in place. Uniflex grid: A steel wire grid used to bridge the “mouth” of the coils on an innerspring unit to prevent “pocketing” of insulation down into the coil and to eliminate “coil feel.” Also helps to distribute the body weight of a person. Urethane foam: Synthetic (chemically foamed) flexible urethane used for mattress cores and as a cushioning material. As a core, it’s the main support system. Generic term covering both polyester and polyether foams.

Tempering: Heat treatment of wire to reduce brittleness. Accomplished by electric charge, oven heat or both. Also known as “stress relieved”.

Ventilator: Metal or plastic screens attached to the sides and sometimes the ends of mattresses to permit the passage of air. Unnecessary with normal high quality materials used today, except for hospital type mattresses with wetproof covers.

Ticking: Fabrics for covering mattresses and foundations. Common types include: stretch knits, woven

Visco-elastic foam: Also known as “memory foam.” Slow recovery urethane foams that are tempera-

ture sensitive. They conform to the body and distribute pressure according to body heat and dynamics. Waterbed: A sleep system employing a water-filled vinyl bladder as its primary support system. Original models relied on rigid framing to contain the vinyl components and were known as a “hardside”. Newer styles consist of vinyl components (bladder and liner) typically encased in foam and made to look like a conventional mattress, usually paired with a regular upholstered foundation. Also called a “softside” waterbed. All versions are sometimes referred to as “flotation beds.” Welded grid top: Basic wire welded into a lattice to which box spring coils, formed wire or modules are fastened. Offers even weight distribution, yet allows some flex and give. Wood bed: A bed with a headboard and footboard made of wood, having side rails of wood or metal that support the foundation and mattress. Wood frame (for box springs): The wood frame in a box spring on which the spring construction is mounted. Woven stripe: A once ubiquitous woven ticking with colored stripes. The style was referred to as “ACA”, the traditional designation for the 8 oz. blue- and white-striped ticking that has mostly fallen out of favor and is seldom produced.
