A Stitch in Time THE AGE-OLD PROVERB, “A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE” REFERS TO SPENDING TIME AND EFFORT TO DEAL WITH A PROBLEM OR CONCERN SOONER RATHER THAN LATER; WHEN IT MAY GET WORSE AND TAKE LONGER TO ADDRESS. WITHIN THE AESTHETICS INDUSTRY, THE SEARCH FOR THE CURE TO AGEING AND PREVENTING SURGICAL INTERVENTION IS REAL. Threads are the stitch in time! Threads are made up of the material used in dissolvable stitches called polydioxanone (PDO). These very fine filaments of PDO are placed under the skin. The body recognises the threads as foreign and starts a ‘wound repair’ response – stimulating the ever-loved collagen and elastin production that sadly isn’t being made by the body like it used to be when we were younger. This helps to tighten and strengthen the skin and minimise fine lines. Threads have been around for years, but these newer threads are little needles of pure magic. You may have seen your social media flooded with pictures of little pink ‘things’ sticking out of people’s faces. Threads are introduced into the skin with needles, the needles are then removed and the PDO ‘thread’ remains under the skin. Our approach is to ask patients if they had a magic cream where would they rub it to identify their main areas of concern. This enables us to educate on how and where the threads will be placed to achieve their desired outcome. Threads can aid with helping to tighten sagging skin and thicken skin that is thinning. These threads can be rejuvenating, volumising or lifting. •

Rejuvenating threads are designed to promote collagen and elastin production and can help restore the appearance of fine lines and poor skin quality. Volumising threads do exactly that and help to volumise or plump an area.

Lifting threads are the barbed or cog threads that are placed deeper in the face and are designed to help ‘lift’ and lessen the appearance of jowls or nasolabial folds. These threads are very popular in people who are not quite ready for surgical intervention. By no means do threads replace a face lift and the results that surgeons can achieve. They are simply an alternative. Careful consideration and selection criteria need to be taken into account to ensure suitability, taking into account skin thickness and quality.

Threads can be used to treat: •

Top lip lines

Naso labial folds

Crow’s feet

Smile lines

Jowls and jawline

Tear troughs

Necks

Act as an alternative to filler

They can also be used in people who don’t respond to anti-wrinkle 22 slim magazine Autumn 2022

Threads are fast, safe and an effective way to restore a more youthful appearance without the risk of complications associated with fillers. There are side effects of swelling and bruising but in general threads are well tolerated with a very high safety profile. The results have people coming back for more! We are specialising in these treatments at Pause Mediclinic as we believe in them so much. Our nurses have three years combined experience in using threads with over 10,000 threads inserted. Complimentary consultations are designed to listen to your concerns, assess and recommend a treatment plan to best address these concerns. We will be honest and if we believe this treatment is not the most appropriate for you then we will recommend alterative treatments including no treatment at all. We look forward to sharing this ‘magic’ with you!
