Hello!

As the countryside bursts into fiery shades of reds, yellows and oranges, Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night are just around the corner and our chunky knits, skinny jeans and boots are about to emerge from our wardrobes once more! Welcome to the autumn issue of QueenBee! Thanks to the success of our launch issue, we are very excited to announce that this issue is even bigger and better than the first! It is jam-packed full of great articles such as key fashion looks for this autumn, how to start running, online dating, vintage crockery, the latest face contouring make-up techniques, gardening tips and recipes. We’ve also got a great feature on local clubs for women and there’s another chance to win an Acquablend water bottle! We even say hello to very our own beauty blogger, Lizzie Benton, so what are you waiting for! Get reading!

the instant face lift: contouring by Lizzie Benton

I

f you’ve spent hours skimming through Kim Kardashian’s endless instagram selfies, then you’ve no doubt pondered on how to recreate that defined make-up look without giving yourself a chin strap of bronzer.

Contouring is without a doubt 2015’s biggest beauty trend, and a make-up secret that many celebs swear by, so it’s no surprise that we too want to get the same defined face and instant cheekbones without the help of a face lift. You may feel like you’re about to create a clown-face but once you’ve seen the staggering affects of contouring, you’ll be selfie obsessed in no time.

What you need: • Your existing foundation • A foundation or concealer one shade lighter • A foundation or concealer one shade darker • Blending brush or sponge (no fingers allowed) Step 1: Cleanse, tone and moisturise to prepare your skin. This will ensure your face is smooth and free from any dirt or oils that may prevent the make-up from blending effectively. Step 2: Apply your natural foundation as normal, ensuring the layer is delicate. Step 3: Start by mapping your face with the darker shade of foundation. This should be applied to the temples, the hollow space beneath your cheekbones and slightly onto your jawline. A good way to remember this is by tracing the number 3. Add a little darkness to the chin, underneath the bottom lip, and tracing around the edge of your nose. Step 4: Take a damp beauty sponge or a good foundation brush and tap over the area of the darker colour to blend it. Try to keep within the areas to ensure it doesn’t stray. Step 5: With the lighter foundation begin to highlight your face. Concentrate on applying it to the forehead, bridge of the nose, and just below the darker lines of your cheek bones. Finally, add a dab underneath each eyebrow. Blend any excess product with a beauty sponge or brush, working it gently into the skin. Step 6: Once you’ve blended each shade fix the look in place with a translucent setting powder which will keep your face looking fabulous throughout the day or night ^ If you’ve tried our tutorial don’t forget to tag us in your contouring selfies @QueenBeePboro

QueenBeelove 1. Choose your site wisely. Be sure the site you join offers the type of relationship you want 2. Pick someone with similar interests to you It’s a good place to start! 3. Don’t be too so choosy Nobody’s perfect, even you! Looks are important but try being less critical and superficial when looking for that someone special.

Daring to date online... F

or many, getting back into the dating game is daunting, and for some, borders on the terrifying! But if you approach it with caution and practicality it IS possible to find love online! Debbie from Cambridge told QueenBee “You soon sift through the men who are either married or just want one thing, to find the genuine article.” Debbie was lucky enough to find her second husband online who, she says, was her soul mate. To help you get started we have these great tips for those of you considering trying online dating. >

4. Think about paying On the free sites you may find more timewasters. If you are serious about finding a partner, consider a site you have to pay a monthly fee for. 5. Be honest Don’t pretend to be something or someone that you’re not in an effort to impress a possible partner. Be genuine and let your true character speak for itself. 6. Beware of exaggeration Even if you are honest about yourself, expect a degree of exaggeration from potential partners. They are trying to sell themselves to you so may over-egg their attributes and achievements. 7. Be specific about what you want Online dating can be a real time-saver if you, and they, know exactly what you are looking for. 8. Stay safe Never give out personal information. Use your first name only and give more personal details only when you get to know each other better. Meet in a public place. Tell a friend where you are going, who with and when you will be back. Make sure you don’t get drunk! 9. Less is more (at first!) Don’t give too much away too soon. Gradually reveal details about yourself and don’t post photos that are overly sexy. Taking your time gives them more chance to learn about you and vice versa. 10. Get ready for rejection It’s going to happen. Accept it but DON’T take it to heart. You may not meet your match for several dates. Good Luck! ^ QueenBee Autumn 2015

Yaxley’s

Fashion Treasure Trove!

T

his issue, we checked out Circles in Yaxley, a thriving dress agency which specialises in re-cycle, re-wear and re-use clothing. The boutique is jampacked with pre-loved fashion, designer clothing, shoes and accessories; all at a fraction of the original retail cost. Celebrating twenty-six years in business this year, we discover why Circles of Yaxley is so successful and why it’s a a must-visit location for any discerning fashionista – whether you are hunting down casual daytime chic right through to unearthing the perfect Mother-ofthe-Bride outfit. We chat to boutique owner Sue to find out more.

Settling down to have a natter with Sue after a busy day in the shop, I notice she is wearing head-to-toe Mark Kane. I want to know how she resists buying all the lovely items in her store! She explains, with a smile, that once upon a time she did manage to restrain from snapping up the entire contents of the agency, but soon realised she was missing a trick. Why spend a small fortune on garments from an array of other stores when she could join her loyal army of customers in

wearing gorgeous, one-off designer pieces and saving money in the process. Chatting about the history of Circles and how it all began, it soon became clear why Sue has made such a success of the shop. Twenty-six years ago she used to sell sheepskin, suede and leather garments at shows such as the much-loved Burghley Horse Trials. One day, Sue stumbled across a stand which sold unique, high-quality, second-hand pieces for reasonable prices and after seeking advice from a friend, who owned a dress agency in Higham Ferrers, she took the plunge to go it alone and the rest, as they say, is history. >

QueenBeefashion

Initially relying on her close girl friends to clear out their wardrobes to provide stock for her fledgling shop, today the business has increased in size significantly and is now brimming with over a hundred hats, an array of prom dresses, casual clothing and Mother-of-the-Bride outfits. The setting is perfect too; a stunning, converted chapel in the heart of the old village of Yaxley. A team of fantastic ladies, who are on hand for advice and a friendly chat, is the icing on the cake. Circles of Yaxley is a must-visit location to discover a fashion gem, be it an M&S classic or a Mark Kane jacket. With her incredible eye for fashion, Sue has created a unique yet contemporary concept that should be on every sophisticated woman’s shopping map. With an abundance of items possessing the wow factor and new stock hitting the rails in September, you too can kit out your new winter wardrobe for a fraction of the cost you’d spend on the High Street. And look amazing to boot! Be prepared to dazzle this autumn! Finally, Sues autumn fashion must-have: Cashmere… and lots of it! ^

Many people enquire about losing weight. ‘Jim, get me ready for the beach in six weeks time!’ ‘Jim, what can you do for my bingo wings?’ ‘Jim, I want toning-up!’

Of course, many of my clients just have to look in the bathroom mirror to see the physical changes as they ‘sculpt’ their body. Many gain confidence from this but I think that there are

I believe that ME time provides essential maintenance for us all. People tell me that I am always ‘up’ and have a positive outlook on life. It’s true. Many enlightened GP’s prescribe running rather than anti-depressants to conteract depression. It works in the vast majority of cases.

I won’t listen to the age thing, either. If exercise is good at twenty, it’s even better at forty, sixty and beyond. As you get older you may be conscious of your world ‘shrinking’ around you. >

QueenBeehealth Keeping a wide circle of friends through exercise means that you can receive enormous benefits. The coffee and cake meet up with a good friend will not fill you with anxieties about the empty calories you will ingest. Go ahead! You’ve earned them! In any case, you will burn them off in the next exercise session! Regular exercise keeps your metabolism high and helps you to burn calories during rest periods. Above all, exercise gives you confidence and control. You learn to listen to your body. Trust your body to tell you when there is a need to eat. Exercise controls your appetite. Scientists have discovered a gland in the brain stems of many mammals. It’s called an appestat. It functions best when an animal exercises. Hormones control hunger. The rabbit has an enlarged appestat and this helps the animal to eat when necessary and not just for fun. If we remain sedentary we lose the art of knowing when we should eat. We eat when we are not really hungry and we eat more than we need on several occasions. Obesity is a huge problem in the developed world and is only getting worse. So, get into the habit of regular exercise. There are many good, local personal trainers around and Jim’s FitXtreme is only one. A three-week boot-camp helps to form the good habits you need to succeed. If you see a personal trainer, you must be prepared to work between sessions to maximise the benefit of instruction ^

Running tips! • STOP making excuses! • Keep a diary or log of your progress. • Keep at it. You will have bad days! Move on. • Find a fitness friend or local running club. Peterborough has lots of excellent, friendly running clubs. • Eat real food. • Eat a little less if you want to lose weight. • Stretch after a run. • Start slowly, stay slow and try to get further. Walk to a lamp post, run the next. • Technique? You will have your own style… but run tall, no slouching. Don’t over-stride. • Your general purpose training shoes are too general to do you much good. I

have been really busy this Summer with various TV shows and promotional work but most excitingly I am now the face of British cleaning giant TEEPOL. They make some brilliant products and even better, they will be launching my very own product line soon, so keep your eyes peeled! Some of you will have seen me in the Country House Special programme which was aired in June on Channel 4. I had an incredible time in Ireland making the show and met some truly amazing people, but the house was shockingly bad! Not only was it covered in bird poo but it had it’s fair share of human and dog poo too! Over the past few months I have also been filming the new series of Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners. This is the fourth series and it’s a real favourite with the viewing public. During my time I have come across some very dirty items and have been really challenged both physically and mentally. The new series will be hitting your screens in October, so look out for me if you can. As well as my cleaning tips, this issue I wanted to put together a selection of items that I highly recommend to keep your house looking pristine. VAX Air Cordless Lift U85-ACLG-B Cordless Vacuum Cleaner Free from wires, you’ll be able to clean your home with ease with this amazing vacuum cleaner. The Cyclonic Technology keeps the suction power consistent and the lift out cylinder makes it so easy to do your stairs and clean out cars. This machine gives you effortless cleaning and every home should have one. Once you go cordless you won’t go back. Teepol Stella Range This range is a very powerful household cleaning range that really does make life easier. A small squirt can remove dirt and

germs easily. The range includes bathroom cleaner, lime scale remover and oven cleaner. www.teepol.co.uk Flash Strong Weave Anti-Bac Cleaning Wipes As you can imagine I can’t go anywhere without cleaning wipes in my handbag! I clean cash points, coffee tables and any manner of items. If I’m honest, I do cause a bit of a scene! You really don’t know what germs are hovering and I really love these Flash wipes. They disinfect brilliantly and provide long lasting antibacterial action. They are absolutely perfect for those quick clean ups, plus the pack fits neatly in your bag ^ > Follow me on Twitter for cleaning advice, tutorials and updates @LynseyOCCleaner

Cleaning tips

from our very own ‘Queen of Clean’ Paint smells after decorating? Pop a small dish of vinegar in the corner of the room to eliminate the nasty smell. Mould in your bathroom? Buy an inexpensive bottle of Vodka & add som e to a spray bottle. Spray directly onto the problem area and leave for at least 15 minutes. Then use a dampened sma ll brush and gently scrub. The mould and mildew will come away leaving you with a nice clean bathroom. Make sure you rinse off the vodka once complete! Spilt some nail polish? As quickly as possible, heavily spray the area with hairspray. Let it sit for around 20 minu tes and then rub hard. If it doesn’t come off first time then repeat.

Crystal Mindset Coaching By Ginny Forrest

T

om Khoury is the face behind Crystal Mindset Coaching, a newly established practice in Barn Hill, Stamford using techniques such as life coaching, NLP (Neuro -Linguistic Programming) and Hypnosis to help you overcome any challenges or fears faced in life. Offering services to overcome addictions, weight control, fears and phobias to name just a few, I was lucky enough to see Tom in action and witness the true talent that he really is. For the majority of my adolescence, I suffered from panic attacks, lack of confidence and carried huge insecurities which stopped me from progressing in a whole realm of areas in my life including social situations and climbing up the career ladder. I heard of Tom and his new practice through my boyfriend, who urged me to give it a go. Now I’ll be honest, I was probably going to be Tom’s most skeptical, negative client he had ever had – plus I never relax so the thought of sitting and having to keep my mind focused on one thing was quite amusing to me. However I took the plunge, contacted Tom and I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have ever done. Tom is incredibly professional, positive and a huge talent. Immediately putting me at ease, I have visited Tom twice now and the changes in my personal and work life are astounding. I do not hold any fear anymore, I’m confident, content with myself and embrace situations I once found hard to even think about. Tom has had a hugely positive effect on my life and I could not recommend someone more highly. For a free consultation with Tom or to find out more visit his website ^

by Scarlett Thomas Genre: Contemporary Sometimes it’s great to delve into an incredibly thought-provoking novel, which is exactly what The Seed Collectors offers. Following the death of Great Aunt Oleander, her remaining relatives discover that she has left each of them a seed pod; their purpose to be uncovered in time as the recipients go through their own stages of growth. With praise from both Neil Gaiman and William Gibson, the story is built through a multitude of characters and their own unique narrative voices, culminating in a rich and intellectual story that will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading it.

Down the Rabbit Hole Curious adventures and cautionary tales of a former Playboy Bunny by Holly Madison Genre: Autobiography You’ve probably seen excerpts from this tell-all book in the Daily Mail already, but in no way do they compare to the entirety of Madison’s deeply personal account of her Playboy days! Wasting no time in jumping from revelation to revelation about Hugh Hefner and his Playboy mansion, Down the Rabbit Hole delivers a surprisingly interesting and outrageous read. For those who love the world of showbiz, this is a must have for your collection.

Dream a Little Dream by Giovanna Fletcher Genre: Romance The wife of McBusted’s Tom Fletcher has long proved her worth in the realm of literature, and her latest novel only serves to validate this. Dream a Little Dream focuses on Sarah, a long-time singleton who finds her life to be just okay - not terrible, but certainly not anything to shout about. When the man of her dreams suddenly comes into the equation, things start to get exciting, but is she sure this is what she really wants? Fletcher delivers a funny, insightful and charming story that will be sure to have you hooked from the first page ^ QueenBee Autumn 2015

Restore lost volume to cheeks and chin for a

gentle lifting effect

M

iddle age happens to all of us, suddenly sneaking up when we least expect it! One day we have a lovely, wrinkle free, youthful glow, then all of a sudden you catch yourself in the mirror and feel officially middle aged! There are so many treatments available now, all promising to smooth your skin and turn back the years, from off the shelf products to cosmetic surgery. Many people are wary when it comes to going under the needle in the name of beauty and The BodyLaser Clinic understands this. Their goal is to make you look and feel your best. Highly trained staff provide a specialist range of quality laser and skin rejuvenation treatments that are tailored to your needs.

One treatment which is proving extremely popular is the JuvédermVoluma. It is the latest in the Juvéderm range of hyaluronic acid fillers specifically designed to restore volume in areas of volume loss. Common areas include the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin. Additionally, due to its versatility, it is also suitable for adding definition to the jaw line. According to Beverley, BodyLaser’s facial aesthetic expert – an attractive face is characterised by smooth, round contours, high cheekbones and a thin, well-defined jawline.

by Lorraine Clark.

These features together comprise the ‘triangle of beauty’ or ‘heart of face’, with its base at the top and summit below. As we age, facial fat loss, gravity and loss of the skin’s natural elasticity conspire to reverse this triangle’s composition, leading to a narrower, less youthful forehead and temple area, and a wider, heavier jaw line. Juvéderm Voluma with Lidocaine was specifically created to restore lost facial volume in the cheeks, cheekbones and chin. It was developed to be smoother than other hyaluronic acid facial volumisers, making it easier to inject during the filler treatment and resulting in a smooth, natural look and feel. Juvéderm Voluma with Lidocaine was developed with Vycross technology to deliver a natural look and feel, with results proven to last up to 18 months. After an in-depth consultation with Beverley, we agreed that this treatment was the best option for my face; I am anti the ‘frozen look’ and like my face to move naturally... just smoother! The treatment is quick and painless with no recovery time and you will see the full results in two-four week’s time ^ The Broadway Clinic, 60 Broadway, Peterborough • Tel: 01733 555 200 www.bodylaser.co.uk “As you can see from the before and after photos, my face looks gently lifted and revitalised. It’s subtle yet noticeable, I would liken the effect to looking radiant and rested after a refreshing break. This treatment is perfect for anyone, who like me, likes to look natural, but needs some extra help with keeping the crags ee and crevices at bay!” QueenB

Beware Social Media?

F

acebook, Twitter and Instagram - you either tolerate them, hate them, or simply can’t live without them. The dens of uncompromising, single-minded women where, it seems, you can find yourself in the middle of a heated argument with no idea how you got there or what you have just disagreed with. They are the birthplace of social media rivalries, petty online squabbles, and arguments that spiral exponentially out of control even though you know nothing about your opponent and have never met them in the flesh. Over recent months there seems to have been an increase in the savage reactions to opinions (not just my own) online. I have found myself reeling back utterly dazed and completely perplexed at how quickly so many women morph into demonic fishwives, spewing forth such written hatred that, if it were to happen face to face, would have you dialling 999 quicker than you could press the delete button. One recent foray into online debating, with the suggestion that the lady complaining about the traffic every morning left 15 minutes earlier, resulted in me being branded a ‘troll’. My initial reaction was one of sadness. I mean, I hadn’t thought I was that aesthetically challenged until it was pointed out to me that it didn’t mean I had taken up residence under a bridge! However my Cyber-spats are nothing compared to some that I have witnessed unfold. But why do those differences of opinion lead to such full on virtual catfights? The growth of Social Media has got to be the phenomenon of the late 20th, early 21st

centuries. It has crossed borders, bridged cultural differences, rendering them all but invisible, where physical miles are reduced to nothing at the press of a button. We should be able to share ideas, information and opinions freely, never feeling obliged or bullied into agreeing for fear of verbal reprisals. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are public forums and an amazing medium through which women can now be heard - the network megaphones for our ideas and opinions! Yet if so many women cannot handle a different opinion, nor treat it with respect without succumbing to a seismic strop, I’m not sure they really have a place there yet. In my opinion, that is! ^

ge is just a number, which of course is very true. But it’s the attitude towards the inevitable aging process that depends on how well we accept the prospect of getting older.

By the end of that night out, after having consumed several glasses of Pinot Grigio, getting out of the aforesaid mentioned drawers was no mean feat either, leaving me sweating profusely and seriously out of breath. Hardly conducive to making any woman feel sexually desirable ?!

As I’ve celebrated my fiftieth birthday this year, I have to admit that it’s arrival has been somewhat bitter-sweet By the end of the for me. Apart from the errant night out, after having grey hair that seems to sprout consumed several overnight and the appearance glasses of Pinot Grigio, of yet another wrinkle, it’s my getting out of the once revered, peachy derrière that I’m in mourning of the most! aforesaid mentioned My bottom is now heading drawers was no mean Southward on an intercity 125 feat either, leaving me at vast speed and to add insult to sweating profusely and injury, my boobs are heading the seriously out of breath. same direction! I could remedy the greying locks with a bottle of hair colour and even invest in some overly priced wrinkle cream or try botox if I’m really that bothered. But apart from employing the services of a plastic surgeon, what am I to do with the sagging bits? I refuse to buy anything that contains spandex, after borrowing my best friends rather unflattering ‘harvest festival’ (all that’s safely gathered in) knickers for an evening out. It was farcical enough trying to shoe horn myself into these most unattractive of undergarments in the first place, a sight to behold!

So, there are ‘butt’ a few of the downsides of being fifty. Although life is what you make it, right? By reaching the half century mark, I figure that as a woman of a certain age I know my own mind, have my own views and regardless of all I’ve cited, I am comfortable in my own skin. I have earned the right of passage into the next stage of my life.

My heels may be getting lower and my neckline a little higher, but I have my own unique style! In essence, I am proud of who I am and of what I’ve achieved. Being Fifty isn’t so bad! (But if anyone asks, I’m still forty nine, okay?) ^ QueenBee Autumn 2015

WE’RE JAMMIN’

love the way our eating habits here in the UK transform along with the time of year. As the long, balmy summer days recede we move slowly but surely away from barbeques and picnics and back towards yummy Sunday roasts and gravy. Tasty casseroles begin to overtake light al fresco lunches. I know it’s a cliché that the British talk about the weather, but really, can we be blamed for this? Our weather is fascinating, and it informs our decisions about everything we do. From social activities, to our wardrobes, to the food that we eat. the weather influences it all. The variety of the seasons is great, and the fact that our cuisine changes with the climate makes it even more fun. So, as we find ourselves being pulled inexorably towards autumn, let’s not mourn the passing of the summer days. Instead, allow ourselves to rejoice in the beauty of autumn, and all that it brings. Round about now our trees and bushes begin to offer up their crops. The blackberry bushes are laden, apples and plums are swelling on the branches, and you know what this means don’t you? Jams, jellies and chutneys! Jam tomorrow, jam today, jam all year round. A country walk provides a basketful of juicy (free) brambles, and despite being horticulturally-

If you’ve never tried making jam before, don’t be scared, it’s really one of the easiest things you can do. The simplest recipes I’ve used require equal quantities of fruit and sugar. Beef Wellington Ingredients 1/2 lb Mushroom 1/2 Onion 2 tb Butter Salt and pepper 4 oz Mushroom paté 1 tb Oil 1-1/2 lb Beef tenderloin Salt and pepper; to taste 1 pack Frozen puff pastry Method 1 Puree the mushrooms and onions together in a food processor. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat, add the mushroom and onion mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is dry. Add salt and pepper to taste and mash in the pate. Transfer the stuffing to a bowl and chill in the refrigerator. 2 Heat the oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the beef and sear on all sides. Remove the beef from the skillet and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in the refrigerator until cold. 3 Roll out chilled puff pastry into a rectangle large enough to enclose the beef. Spread the dough with a generous layer of stuffing, place the beef on top and spoon another bit of stuffing on the beef. Wrap the pastry to enclose the beef and stuffing and place the Wellington in the refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes. 4 Preheat oven to 220C/425F. Place Wellington in oven and immediately lower heat to 175C/350F. Roast for about 20 minutes Serve with seasonal roast and steamed vegetables.

Coconut Curried Sweet Potato & Chickpea Stew Ingredients 1 small yellow onion 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 3 cloves garlic 1/2 teaspoon dried spices: cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, coriander, ground cloves Salt, to taste 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger 1 red chili 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas 1 large sweet potato 1 can (15 oz) light coconut milk 1/2 cup chopped parsley Jasmine rice, for serving Method 1 In a large, deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil and a small yellow onion (loosely diced). Allow this to soften for 3-4 minutes while mincing the garlic & chili and gathering the spices 2 Add the garlic, chili, and ginger to the onions with about 1/2 a teaspoon of each spice. Stir and allow the spices to mingle with the onions for several minutes. 3 Add almost all the other ingredients to the pan – throw in the (drained and rinsed) chickpeas, the can of tomatoes, the light coconut milk, and about 1 large sweet potato that has been peeled and diced into ~1 inch chunks. 4 Turn the heat down to a simmer and cover. This curry will need at least 30 minutes (50 is ideal) to fully break down and absorb all these beautiful spices. Stir occasionally and give the dish at taste after 20 minutes; I often add a lot more spices at this point; especially cinnamon, turmeric, and salt. If you want the dish extra spicy, a dash of cayenne pepper wouldn’t be a bad idea. 5 Before serving, add a handful or two of fresh chopped parsley to complete this dish. Serve atop fluffy jasmine rice for an unforgettably creamy and comforting meal. Again, this keeps amazingly well in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Yay for leftovers!

Football for the over 50s. Women included!

H

ave you seen those advertisements on TV that feature Walking Football for the over 50s? If so, did you see any women taking part? No, you probably didn’t because in fact, there weren’t any. It’s a well-kept secret that women are welcome too and it’s a great activity to be part of, for lots of different reasons.

My name is Lynda - that’s me on the right. I’m (don’t tell anyone) sixty three ears old. I like to think I am as fit as I can be and try to keep at a reasonable weight by exercising and eating healthy, homemade food. I used to go to the gym a lot, taking part in body pump, aerobics and body combat, but for the past ten years, aching joints has seen me change my exercise regime to lower-impact activities such as swimming, cycling and walking - not to mention loads of gardening. My husband (a keen footballer until an injury at 50 forced retirement) received an email from Glinton and Northborough FC inviting him and some of his old, retired team mates to take part in some taster sessions of Walking Football on a Tuesday evening

at Arthur Mellows College, using their all-weather pitches. He arranged to go down and try it with his friends. I read the email myself and noticed that women were also welcome and much to my husband’s surprise, I decided to join in too. It was enormous fun! I lost an incredible 2lb in weight each evening I took part! The banter was brilliant and around twelve men and four women turned up for that first session, with the FA stating that we were the largest first week turn-out for a club nationally! The only rule to differ from regular football is there is no running and heavy tackling is not encouraged, although there can be a bit of gentle pushing (which is good seeing as I don’t like the men getting too near to me!) In the last five minutes of my second taster session, I dribbled the ball past the goal keeper, crossed the ball to a fellow team member who kicked it into the net for his third goal. It was exhilarating and I still maintain I wasn’t running to all those who insisted I was! I had just walked as fast as I could for an hour and a half – I didn’t have it in me to run! I thoroughly recommend Walking Football, both for the exercise and for the sheer fun and sociability factor. Our team meet in the evening and go for half a pint afterwards. I believe there are three more similar clubs in Peterborough that meet during the day and have coffee afterwards ^ Our Glinton sessions are organised by Northborough & Glinton FC. Contact davidribakovs@btconnect.com or ring David on 07725 672580. And women are very welcome!

The banter was brilliant and around twelve men and four women turned up for that first session, with the FA stating that we were the largest first week turn-out for a club nationally! 62

Local

Women in

business

Each issue, Gary Johannes from Peterborough Does Business chats to one local business woman to discuss their personal experiences of running their own company. To start us off, this issue he met Shelley Cash who runs her own marketing consultancy business...

H

aving met Shelley when she was employed and remembering her goal of some day having her own consultancy, it was great to meet for coffee and catch up some two years later! I was captivated with her positivity, ambition and passion. Shelley has a very clear picture of what her role is within her clients business and what results she can, and will, achieve. This has enabled Shelley to grow her portfolio to a place where she has a consistent level of good quality clients, and much more importantly, a constant and continually growing flow of referrals from her current and previous customers. She now feels ready to push her comfort zone and start pitching for those big national brands. I can’t wait for the next catch up to see where she is next! Tell us some of the companies worked you’ve worked with or for: Smiths Gore, Opportunity Peterborough, Stand Agency, Amey, Vivacity, Athene Communications, Lakeside Kitchen & Bar (Ferry Meadows) and Peterborough Environment City Trust. A paragraph that describes you and your values: I am a creative person who really enjoys solving marketing related problems for businesses, which either helps to raise their profile, save them money or generate income. I am passionate about Peterborough and I really enjoy working in the city where I have always lived, and contributing to the growth and success of businesses in the area.

QueenBeebusiness What one bit of advice do you wish you’d been given when you were setting up your first business? Don’t be afraid to push yourself. The thought of going out there alone can be daunting but persevere and you will find it very rewarding.

What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment since starting your business? Building a reputation that has already allowed me to be sought out by national companies in the region, through word of mouth.

If you were to set up another business what would be the first thing you would do? I would promote myself further using a wider mix of channels to attract a wider variety of clients.

What’s the best advice you have received in business that you feel you need to pass on? Make yourself well known and don’t hesitate to tell your network and contacts what you’re doing and what sort of business you’re wanting to attract. Word of mouth has been the best way to win new contracts for me so far.

What had the biggest impact on you growing your business to where it is today? Staying connected to previous employers definitely helped as these were my first freelance clients. I have used the network of contacts I already had from previous employers, which has helped me to promote myself and win contracts. As a business owner what is your favourite tool that you couldn’t do without? Definitely online storage and subscriptions to online software packages. As a Graphic Designer and Marketing Consultant I have a lot of large files for different customers so having the online option gives me the security and storage space I need. I would be lost without it. What do you consider to be the most important thing in moving your business forward? To continue to build a good reputation and keep it there. Tell us about your business (what product or service you provide and who your target audience is) All aspects of marketing but in particular in-house support. I’m also a graphic designer so having these extra skills allows me to adapt to clients needs. Forward looking companies with innovative products and an ambition to grow, who also have values that align with mine. Please tell us what being a business owner means to you and why you became an entrepreneur in the first place? It means I can choose the projects and who I work with making every day different. It also means I can steer my career as I choose allowing me to gain a wide mix of experience. What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why? I previously worked with a female PR Manager who was very driven and taught me how to be tough in a fast paced environment. I always felt inspired by her and still call her from time to time for advice.

What one thing have you learned as a small business owner that has served you well? Surround yourself with the right people. Sticking to your guns, driving yourself forward and only choosing to work with clients that fit your business plan, goals and values. What is Number One Business Goal you plan to accomplish over the next year? To grow my business by working with a wider variety of clients from different sectors. What do you do for fun/relaxation? Gym, I’m a fitness fanatic. And DVD box sets (also addicted). Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Play to your strengths. Work out what you enjoy the most and what you do best but always try to push yourself as you may be surprised at how far you can go! If you were to write a book what would it be about? A children’s book. I’ve always thought about writing a Beatrix Potter style book and using my creative skills and illustrating it myself. > Peterborough Does Business provides an inspiring, educating and collaborative growth platform that enables small local businesses to succeed. How I make it work

B

elinda is a Grantham girl, with the dubious distinction of having attended Maggie Thatcher’s old school, KGGS, from where she went on to Leeds University to do an English/French degree. She spent a couple of years living in France before deciding to convert to law via an intensive professional course, again in Leeds followed by the Solicitors’ Final exam in 1982. Articles were in Harlow, Essex and then back up to Lincolnshire with her husband-to-be, to work in Boston as a County Prosecutor.

Belinda has been practicing in her own right as Belinda Smith & Co since May 2008. Her early career in criminal law developed into a family law specialism via care proceedings and other legal aid family work. Belinda has been a member of the Law Society Children Panel for over 15 years although she no longer runs a Legal Aid franchise. Belinda now has a thriving private law family practice, covering the whole range of family issues such as divorce and the division of finances and property, cohabitation splits, and problems involving custody and contact with children. Belinda would like to stress that, contrary to the common misconception of lawyers preferring conflict to resolution, Belinda is a trained collaborative 66

lawyer and can represent divorcing clients who prefer this more conciliatory approach to marriage breakdown. For more information about collaborative law, please see the Belinda Smith & Co website. Belinda is proud that she has built up a law practice which, whilst able to cover all the legal issues across the family law spectrum, offers a quality of individual service not always possible in the larger firms. In January 2012 Michele Fielding joined Belinda Smith & Co from Buckles Solicitors, bringing with her over 25 years of expertise in family law and her connection with the Cambridgeshire Police Federation who refer members of the local police force. Michele is also a trained collaborative lawyer. Belinda’s main offices are in the leafy surrounds of Thorpe Wood, Peterborough. Belinda also see clients in Bourne by arrangement, as a service to her local clients. An appointment can be set up at short notice by telephoning the Peterborough office. Belinda has lived in the Bourne area for over 25 years, returning

to the land of her fathers (the family home of her grandfather W.H. Smith (no relation), former Mayor and J.P. of Bourne town, was on North Street.) Belinda is married to Peter, an IT Manager at Peterborough City Council and they have two sons aged 19 and 21 who are away studying. Belinda has a wide variety of interests, including singing in Boston Choral Society, running a book club, and secretary to the Dowsby Village Hall and P.C.C. She plays tennis whenever possible and loves skiing. Achieving that work-life balance is a constant challenge, but Belinda is an optimist! ^

Belinda’s natural inclination was towards defence work so she returned to private practice, moving to the Peterborough branch of Metcalfe Copeman & Pettefar in 1987. It was a short walk up Peterborough’s Priestgate to Buckle Mellows less than a year later, where she remained for the next 21 years, rising to full equity partner.

De-stress, get fit & make new friends with Taekwondo & self defense classes Peterborough lady, Gail Williams of Dansim Taekwondo, tells QueenBee about herself and the importance of self defence for woman...

A

s a female Master Instructor Coach I train and teach the Korean martial art of Taekwondo in traditional WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) style. It’s different as we don’t punch to the face, which suits me fine! Taekwondo is a self defence discipline dating back centuries, devised by Monks to keep them safe from harm.

When I started learning taekwondo the class was just me and 4 men. To this day I am the only one to have gained a black belt from the original 5! My willingness to teach self defence comes from my philosophy that ‘no one should be held captive or at the mercy of another’ and I am passionate about this. The scenarios I teach include one or more assailants, carjacking, isolation, and close quarters ie a lift. The concept of self defence is to protect oneself and or others unable to protect themselves. Self defence can eliminate those feelings of panic or feeling inadequate. You can do something and it may save your life one day ^

I started my training back in 1995 and have taught many students since then - men, women and children. I have also assisted coaching professional athletes in stretching and aerial techniques such as kicks. The one thing all self defence students learn is to be able to react, confidently, should they come across conflict. For me, it has become a way of life and at 51 years old I embrace learning! I have training and knowledge of Tai Chi along with valuable knowledge in food types to keep my body in shape and alert - ready for anything! Women can enjoy the total body workout my taekwondo classes give, along with the new friendships and social life that comes with it (such as the British Taekwondo Association Annual Black Tie Dinner). With my training, women can learn simple, effective techniques that give them empowerment to overcome difficult situations and stay in control. Self defence can give focus, concentration and a desire to learn more.

How Does Your

A

n immediate connection between gardening, a visit to the opticians and the Cabbage White butterfly may not always seem obvious. However a recent experience has taught me otherwise! Although autumn is fast approaching (sorry but Mother Nature marches on!), the havoc wreaked by the Cabbage White Butterfly continues. Brassicas and other plants can be completely demolished if you aren’t vigilant, as I have just discovered! She asked me to look at her kale. All she had left from flourishing plants were stalks still covered in extremely plump, well-fed caterpillars that must have thought

70

QueenBee Autumn 2015

they were dining at a Michelin starred restaurant! We’ve attempted a rescue operation but if it will be a success or not, we have yet to find out. If you spot Cabbage White butterflies around your plants, they are probably laying eggs. These eggs have a very active life-cycle, so vigilance is a must during summer and into early autumn, especially if the weather is mild. Hopefully you will be enjoying the fruits of your labours; making chutney out of any tomato gluts, ensuring you pick crops, including spinach and runner beans regularly, to ensure as long a season as possible. But as the nights draw in and the growing slows down, when your crops have been harvested and the exuberant summer colour has faded from the borders, early autumn is a good time to take stock and plan.

QueenBeegardening

Garden Grow? In the garden, think about covering tender plants or taking them indoors to protect against frost. If you grow brassicas on the allotment, keep an eye out for pigeons who will strip unprotected caulis and cabbages in no time at all. You can net quite successfully but do it carefully so as not to endanger the birds. You can continue planting salad leaves and spinach, even trying more basil indoors in good light, and early sowings of beans and peas can be carried out from late September through to mid-November. The advantage of sowing early is that plants can establish over the winter and flower and fruit earlier. Many plants are able to withstand quite harsh conditions; however you may need to fleece young plants during hard frosts or snowy conditions. To dig or not to dig is a vexing question in autumn. Digging breaks up the soil and makes

weeds easier to control (don’t forget they do keep growing!) and allows birds and other creatures to feast on uncovered pests but if you clear your plot of weeds and debris, frost may break the earth up for you. The choice is yours but mind your back if digging is your preference. Autumn is the time to plant your bulbs and spring bedding plants. Bulbs reward you year after year and who hasn’t been delighted by colourful displays of large headed chrysanthemums and dahlias at this time of year; they really do lend themselves to the space an allotment allows. Let’s hope some of you will be harvesting pumpkins this year and if not, maybe think about planting a few for next year. Until next time – Happy Gardening! ^ By Janet Anderson

Crockery & Accessories Hire

agpie Vintage Crockery and Accessories Hire is a business born out of it’s founder’s passion for vintage homewares and antiques treasures, and many, many visits to antiques shops and fairs, Helen explains… “I used to buy and sell vintage clothes and homewares (and also keep a lot too!) and then came up with the idea of starting Magpie, giving me the perfect excuse to build up a collection of beautiful vintage china which I could share with anyone who wants a vintage look at their wedding, party or event”.

72

QueenBee Autumn 2015

Magpie is now in it’s 4th year and has supplied teacups, cake stands, teapots, vintage embroidered tablecloths, vases, bunting, tin baths, vintage props and accessories (the list goes on!) to events from weddings, christenings and afternoon teas to hen parties, birthday parties and awards ceremonies. Helen loves what she does and always goes the extra mile, offering advice and contacts along the way “My career is in marketing and events so I am used to the pressures of event management, organising the perfect party

As well as the hire, Helen can also set up and style events and is happy to give advice on how to bring people’s ideas to life and how to give their chosen style to an event “Often, people come to me with a few ideas and a ‘look’ that they’d like and once we get talking and they see the collection, it grows into an idea and suddenly

“Hi I’m Lizzie, a fashion & lifestyle Blogger living in Peterborough. After completing a fashion diploma and going on to work within the beauty industry for 5 years, I have spent most of my time writing, talking and breathing fashion and beauty. I’m delighted to be working with QueenBee and will be regularly sharing my passions, thoughts and knowledge. Whether you’re a fellow fitness freak or a fashionista, I hope that my articles will entertain, enthuse and add a little glamour to lifes rollercoaster.”

A

s someone with facial birthmarks I’ve gone through my fair share of foundation to find the one that can truly cover any form of imperfections. It’s not that I want to get rid of my rosy red marks, hell no! They’re part of who I am. But like most women I would do anything to look as flawless as the cover girls that adorn the fashion magazines, because let’s be honest, we all have our own imperfections that we’d rather hide-away from the world.

78

QueenBee Autumn 2015

Thanks to my unique markings I’ve road tested more concealers, sat through more beauty counter makeovers and splashed out on more brands of foundation than any woman I know. I dread to think of the expense my bank balance has had to handle, but thanks to this rigorous - and somewhat endless process, I’ve now become accustomed to knowing exactly what can and cannot cover even the tiniest of imperfections. Going through premium brands, drugstore brands and even dabbling in medical make-up,

QueenBeeblog

after almost a decade of trial and error, I can definitely say that I’ve been there, done that and had the orange face to prove it. The trouble is, no matter how many makeup artists I’ve visited to teach me the wonders of skin camouflage, they seem baffled at the sight of my birthmarks as if I’ve given them the greatest makeup challenge they’ve ever had to face. And instead of giving me the tools and teaching me how to apply my makeup without looking like I’ve troweled it on, they’ve done just that. Add a bucket load of product as if a glowing orange face is going to be the solution. Well it certainly distracted the looks from my birthmarks, but not quite in the way I desired. But although this has been a war that’s been long and hard, I’ve finally found the holy grail of foundations that can cover everything from a dark tattoo to a spot. Dermablend is the most effective foundation I’ve ever had the pleasure of applying to my face. Applied lightly with a beauty blender it covers my birthmarks completely, giving me a flawless and imperfection free face.

If you want to try it yourself I would highly recommend watching the miracle foundation at work on YouTube with Lisa Eldridge. Search for her video on covering acne, and your makeup bag will never be the same again. Until next issue!

QueenBee are pleased to introduce our new regular columnist, Gary Johannes, who’ll be giving us the male perspective on a variety of subjects.

Are men really from Mars and women from Venus?! ...a man’s view

s a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I see a huge number of clients in my practice, with seventy percent of those being female. There are big differences between male and female clients. Males tend to be dealing with confidence issues and self-limiting beliefs, often struggling with the responsibility of keeping up the strong, brave persona they feel is expected of them at all times. Female clients, however, tend to put a huge amount of pressure on themselves to be the best at everything. When I delve into why this is, the most common response I receive, is that they worry about other womens’ perceptions of them. Women spend a huge amount of time worrying what other women think of them; whether that is how good they look on a night out, being portrayed as the best mum at school or juggling family and work simultaneously whilst still managing to turn up to yoga class looking cool, calm and collected! All this worry and increased effort to make everything perfect creates high levels of stress

and anxiety, which in turn, releases the stress hormone cortisol into our bodies. Excessive cortisol leads to problems including insomnia, tiredness, brain fog and conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, afflictions which naturally make it even more difficult to perform to the high standards women set for themselves. The irony is, if we chose to be happy with “just” being the best version of ourselves that we possibly can be (which is generally pretty exceptional anyway!), we would probably still over-deliver on others expectations of us. And that choice - because it is a choice - would help us to achieve a healthy balance in our lives; feeling better about ourselves and achieving so much more in our lives. Once we become happy with who we are, rather than striving to be what we think others think we should be, much of the worry evaporates from our lives; freeing up our minds to help us reach our full potential. ...a woman’s view

HAVE VERY FEW friends left who are having their first babies, but every now and then, I still hear a new parent declare how ‘absolutely shattered’ they are and how difficult it is being a parent to a new-born. I just smile and nod and say nothing; safe in the knowledge that it only gets a hundred times worse as said bundle of joy grows older, morphing from innocent, angelic sweetheart, who holds your hand and tells you she loves you bigger than space into a spotty, reclusive, mute monstrosity that is commonly known as the teenager. I’m not sure which is worse; teenage boy or teenage girl? I am the owner of a female specimen but am reliably informed a male is equally as grim. It’s not just the hormonal swings of puberty that makes living with a teenager so traumatic; one minute they are talking to you (even if it is just in two-syllable bursts), the next you are so ****ing annoying they can’t even bring themselves to look at you, let alone actually speak to you! No, it’s much, much more than that. Things you used to do that once made them laugh like drains now cause acute embarrassment. Katie Price impressions, eighties dancing, twerking… all resigned to the vaults of history. You’re not allowed to talk to their friends. Or actually even breathe if they be so bold as bring a member of the opposite sex home.

You’ve suddenly become deeply unfashionable. They don’t like your cooking. In fact, they’ve NEVER liked it. Like, ever! It’s your fault they’ve got curly hair. And flat feet. And don’t get algebra. You’re way too strict. You don’t let them do ANYTHING! You’re taste in music is utter crap. You are soooo boring. You have absolutely no idea what it’s like to be young. They really hate you. They even wish they’d never been born…

Until of course, they want something. Clothes. A full head of caramel highlights. Cash. A litre of Malibu. Driving lessons! Then, effortlessly and without warning, they revert back to that innocent, angelic sweetheart that you miss so much. They hold your hand and tell you they love you bigger than space. You close your eyes and smile, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside, and for one fleeting moment, all is well in the world. And then you give them whatever they bloody want ^
