anta Ana’s historic Santora Building on Broadway at 2nd Street is a must see destination for any and all fans of art and architecture in Orange County. Highlighting the Santora’s collection of galleries and design studios is Atilano Salon and Gallery. Jose Atilano Molina (Joseph), is a one of a kind whirl of creative expression and endless energy. His whimsical, decorative and highly detailed mannequins demand your attention even before you step inside the gallery. Once inside, this menagerie nearly hypnotizes visitors with an endless investigation of detail, pattern, color and glittering texture. Intensely patterned 2 dimensional pieces crowd the walls around amplifying the mannequins’ collective presence. There’s an excitement and energy that ignites one’s visit. The work inspires. Talk to any artist who has experienced this space and hear repeatedly how motivating Joseph’s work is. All pieces are for sale. Newport Beach’s Gem

ETHOS Contemporary Art Representing Living Masters

L

Located just across the street from the new Lido House Hotel in Newport Beach you will find Ethos Contemporary Art. A little gem of a gallery that feels more like a museum … except you can buy the art. The owner of the gallery is Georgeana Ireland, an artist herself and curator with an eye for mastery. “I decided early on I only wanted to work with artists working at the genius levelthey do not have to be wellknown necessarily but most of them have been producing art 30+ years. They are still living and are now creating at the top level of their talent.” Traveling and visiting art museums around the globe (Georgeana has visited 44 countries) has refined her eye, “I now know what excellence looks like”. While some of these artists are known, Orlando Agudelo Botero for exam-

ple, (see front cover) was awarded the Gold Medal of the Arts for Hispanic Art from the White House. Orlando once resided in Laguna Beach and has a tremendous local following. Georgeana loves it when she discovers an unknown genius- Kevork Cholakian’s ceramics for example fool the eye. “You would never know the erasers and spilled coffee are not real.” She says. One of the stars of the gallery is sculptor Dakota Pratt.

His pop art constructs are reminiscent of Claus Oldenburg but with his own spin. The sculptures are hand-carved wood, often made of many layers which are then covered with vintage metal bottle caps that have been flattened and riveted on. His work has been snapped up by collectors as well as hotels. The demand for his work is highly consistent which makes is hard to keep him in stock. Another known master Georgeana is thrilled to have in house is John Asaro. Continued on page 20

“I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to add him to our roster. I have been a fan of his work for 20 years. His nudes are simply breathtaking. We have works in our gallery you will not find anywhere else, ’Little Gems’ all originals in oil.” Select sculptures in mirror-finished stainless steel by artist Michael Shewmaker is yet another collection Georgeana is excited about. “Shewmaker’s pieces are uniquely adaptive, working both inside or outside, reflecting everything around them. His monumental works created in his Hawaii studio are truly outstanding and have been placed in important collections nationally.” The gallery is compact and changes often. “Like a museum, we can only show a fraction of what we have. Once a client locks into an artist or two, we set up a private viewing for them to see the entire body of work. Ethos carries a broad range of paintings, sculptures, art glass and works on paper. Once the gallery gets a feel for a project its staff works hard to help clients put together a collection that is cohesive.

Service based, Ethos Contemporary offers both home and office consultation and viewing, including delivery and complimentary basic installation. Ireland adds, “While we are thrilled that visitors find incredible art at our gallery, our continued focus is the local market and being a part of the ever-beating art scene in Orange County.” Ethos Contemporary art is pleased to represent 30 internationally acclaimed artists including Dick Marconi, Marton Varo, Vladimir Cora, Ed Dean, Martin Eichinger, Pierre H Matisse, Lisa Palombo, Randi Solin, Peggy Hinaekian, John Szabo, Barbara Strassen, Georgeana Ireland, Luke Reichle, Clara Berta and many others. The gallery features museum level paintings, sculptures and art glass as well as works on paper and offers complimentary consultation for both beginning and advanced collectors. Ethos Contemporary is located at 3405 Newport Blvd., Newport Beach, CA on the Balboa Peninsula. Open daily 11a.m. to 6p.m. Call 949/791-8917 or visit www.ethoscontemporaryart.com

ADD NG DIMENSION Building Bridges - In the Time of Walls Carrillo Gil Museum - Mexico City, Mexico (through 11/21) Building Bridges explores 40 years of work by 21 Southern California-based Chicano and Latino artists who use their art to not only acknowledge complex politics, but also to celebrate the history behind a warm and vibrant community. Concentrating on various themes and ideas, the exhibition highlights a range of diverse approaches to illustrate the sum of Mexican heritage and American experience. From Carlos Almaraz’s support of the United Farm Workers to Frank Romero’s tongue-in-cheek narrative about what it is to be Mexican-American in Los Angeles, each artist conveys -through his or her own perspective- the hopes, dreams, and fears experienced yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Comprised of artworks from the AltaMed Art Collection, curated by Julian Bermudez, Building Bridges illustrates how decade after decade -from progression to recession- these themes remain relevant. Otis College of Art and Design, celebrating their 100th Anniversary, claims 4 alumni in the show Yolanda Gonzalez, a 4th generation Mexican-American artist is a crowd favorite.

The Playful and Whimsical World of Painter Sandra Jones Campbell This is a painter who, with her vibrant palette, “shady characters” and a tongue in cheek approach to human interaction,

David Valedez’s Drive-In in Building Bridges

tells thought provoking stories. Her bio states that her “visual narratives achieve effects that are simultaneously playful and sophisticated” No argument here. An instantaneous party or a conversation starter are part of the staying power of her charmed figures and compelling cubist characters, titled, “Dawg”, “Quicker with a Straw” and “Sweeping Through a Crowd”. Campbell's images, exude a similar panache of the celebrated style of Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka. You want to be friends with her characters, you want to talk to them, know more about their secrets, ask questions, invite them over for dinner or drinks. Sandra has been painting for decades, however her obvious enthusiasm for creating new engaging images is fresh and enduringly enthusiastic. Add to your circle of friends - they won’t talk back, are never late, and will definitely offer a dose of inspiration, www.sandrajonescampbell.com, see page 39,

O. C. Fashion Week Showcased at Dawson Cole Fine Art Like a fine wine and cultivated cuisine - stellar art and fantastic fashion seem to go hand in hand and there is no better choice in Laguna Beach than Dawson Cole Fine Art to host a party of discerning distinction. The gallery, returned as a main stage venue for OC Fashion Week’s semi annual showcase of international designer collections and hosted an exclusive fashion show on Sat., Sept 29th in their Sculpture Garden featuring the works by world-renown artist and sculptor, Richard MacDonald, and Hunt Slonem, among others. Co-owner Ariane McDonald proudly states, “We are honored to be an official sponsor of OC Fashion Week and to share this exciting event with the community.” For a decade now, OC Fashion Week has the unique distinction of representing the luxury retail market of California and it's recent international partnerships with organizations from Hong Kong to Athens, Greece and the U.S. Virgin Islands has deemed it a fashion destination landmark advocating for fashion tourism for local retailers and support for emerging designer talent. One of my favorites was the 6ft 2” model who was encouraged to model by her English teacher, who attended in her stilettos, and happens to be a former professional basketball player… No rules in fashion. Fine Art Artist reception, Oct 20th

Avran Fine Art is delighted to welcome renowned artist, Hessam Abrishami, to the gallery this fall. Hessam Abrishami has provided the world with images that capture an essence of love and romance and Avran is pleased to represent the artist’s work exclusively throughout Orange County. On Saturday evening, October 20th from 6-9 PM, Avran Fine Art is hosting their opening reception for Hessam Abrishami, celebrating the start of his solo exhibition at the gallery. This is a free event open to the public; a great opportunity to meet the artist that evening.

Hessam’s works convey a unique view of the world, colored by his individual beliefs and experiences. Hessam is deeply optimistic – he believes strongly in the goodness of people and in the world, which is reflected not only in his art, but in his personal values. When asked if it is difficult to see a favorite painting leave in the arms of a collector, never to be seen again, Hessam said, “No, I have enjoyed making it and now I want it to bring happiness to someone else.” Fervent Inspiration comes from interactions that happen with and around Hessam. This is all encompassing; life, people, animals, love, romance, intimacy, beauty, dance, music, celebration. As Hessam says, “Basically everything that makes me feel good is what I strive to deliver to others with my work.” A bold and coveted addition to the Laguna Beach art scene, Avran makes its fresh and imaginative fine art accessible to established and emerging collectors alike. Avran Fine Art is located at 540 S. Coast Hwy., Suite 106, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. 949-494-0900 www.avranart.com

In addition to welcoming thousands of visitors each year, The Irvine Museum has hosted more than 80,000 elementary school students on field trips. Moreover, the museum has toured 16 traveling exhibitions at more than 80 American museums and it is the first and only museum to travel an exhibition of California Impressionism to Europe, with venues in Paris, Krakow and Madrid. To document these and other exhibitions, the museum has published 21 art books. In the fall of 2016, James Irvine Swinden, initiated and supervised the donation of this remarkable collection to the University of California, Irvine. As a result of his foresight, The Irvine Museum Collection, is now a part of the new University of California, Irvine, Institute and Museum for California Art. The Irvine Museum Collection at the University of California, Irvine presents:

Upon a Painted Ocean An Ode to the California Coast Nov. 10, 2018 - March 30, 2019

Guy Rose Point Lobos

Our tribute to the California Coast is entitled UPON A PAINTED OCEAN, in reference to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem about the sea, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, published in 1798. It reads, in part:

On display are important historical works by Rex Brandt, Frank Cuprien, Granville Redmond, Edgar Payne, Ruth Peabody, Arthur Rider, William Ritschel, Donna Schuster, George Gardner Symons, Elmer Wachtel, and William Wendt.

Day after day, day after day, we stuck, nor breath nor motion; As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean. Water, water, everywhere, and all the boards did shrink; Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink.

The Irvine Museum Collection at the University of California, Irvine 18881 Von Karman Ave, Ground Floor Irvine, CA 92612

Contrary to the tragic theme of the poem, our exhibition celebrates the splendor of our sun-filled coast. To that end, UPON A PAINTED OCEAN features works by important historical artists as well as by contemporary painters. George Symons Southern California Coast

art history Arearea, 1892, Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin:

CHASING ETERNITY by Joy Shannon

“T

he late 19th century Post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin proclaimed that, "Life is hardly more than a fraction of a second. Such a little time to prepare oneself for eternity‌ " This enigmatic painter was born to a French and Peruvian family in Paris and

spent some of his early childhood years in Peru, the imagery of which later influenced his art. He is best known for leaving the bourgeois life of being a stockbroker to be a painter full-time and then leaving European civilization altogether to paint in Tahiti for the majority of the height of his career. Gauguin seemed to be chasing eternity in his work, painting spiritual concepts within the cultures of both Europe and Tahiti. One can study this fascinating and sometimes controversial figure for a lifetime and still discover new dimensions to his life, personality and artwork. It seemed, first and foremost, he was constantly moving, seeking and creating, in pursuit of something better or deeper on some ethereal level than what he found around him in Europe. Gauguin once said, "Civilization is what makes you sick" and, I used to joke to my art history students, that no, actually syphilis is what makes you sick, as that is allegedly one of the factors that ultimately led to Gauguin's death. I gave

Gauguin a hard time because when I first heard Gauguin's story, I was sympathetic to the fact that he left his wife and five children to pursue painting full-time in Paris at at an age when a woman would have found it extraordinarily more difficult than it even is today to be a single parent. Yet, again and again when I saw Gauguin's work in museums, the extraordinary spiritual feeling behind what he was continually attempting to capture with his paint brush would catch my breath. It was also Gauguin who remarked, "It is the eye of ignorance that assigns a fixed and unchangeable color to every object; beware of this stumbling block." I had to be careful not to judge his character, from a different cultural time and without the ability to ever have all the facts, while I could at least explore the feelings I get from his art. The more I delved into his work and saw it in person, the more I loved it. The more I ended up feeling that Gauguin spent his fraction of a second on this earth painting about eternity in the most incredible, vital way. Gauguin's early work explored Impressionist techniques, but as he began to come into his own he became fascinated by the art of Japan and Africa which was finding its way into Europe more and more during the late 1800s. Influenced by the bold lines of Japanese printmaking, Gauguin began to paint in a style called Cloisonnism, named after the colorful Medieval cloisonnĂŠ enameling technique. Gauguin used heavy outlines and bright colors with little subtly in graduation between them. His work also often defied the traditional rules of Classical perspective, while still maintaining elegant compositions. Eventually, he would evolve into the

composition style called Synthetism where both form and color play equal roles, with neither standing out. More important than how Gauguin was painting was what he was painting, as it was so vital and different than anything else being painted at the time. Seen in paintings like "The Vision after the Sermon (Jacob Wrestling with the Angel)," Gauguin combines the material with the ethereal. In the foreground are French women listening to a sermon, while opening up before them is a visionary, spiritual world with Jacob and an angel in bright, impassioned colors. During this era, continued on pg. 62

civilization as "everything that is artificial and conventional" and seemed to be continually seeking the authentic, inspiring, spiritual and beautiful to paint. He had already left his more secure middle-class bourgeois job and family to pursue the risky life of a painter full-time, and this travel seemed to be the next courageous step in following his muse. The paintings Gauguin painted in Tahiti are infused with sensuality and vibrance, with the bright colors and patterns of the island's fabrics and flowers working well with his Cloisonnism. Additionally, we see Gauguin intrigued by the Gauguin is remembered for his sometimes troucultural and spiritual beliefs of the Tahitian people, by bled friendship with Van Gogh, and the time they spent his inclusion of ancestors or spirits in paintings like painting and living together for nine weeks in 1888 at "The Spirit of the Dead Watching." (1892) Gauguin cona home in Arles. It was during this time when part of tinued to ask esoteric questions in paintings such as Van Gogh's ear was cut off, and some art historians "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are argue that it was Gauguin who sliced Van Gogh's ear We Going?" (1897) with a fencing sword in an argument, and both artists Towards the end his life, Gauguin moved to the agreed to keep the fight hushed up. Gauguin also had a long-lasting, and exceedingly less stormy, relation- Marquesas Islands where he painted and wrote, while ship with contemporary Degas, who was a champion declining in health. He died in 1903, with one of his last journal entries that year remarking, "No one is good; No for Gauguin's work. one is evil; everyone is both, in the same way and in Gauguin traveled to Panama and Martinique in different ways‌ It is so small a thing, the life of a man, 1887, but it was not until he traveled to Tahiti in and yet there is time to do great things, fragments of the 1890, that he seemed to find his true muse in a locacommon task." However one judges his life, Gauguin's tion. Truly a reflection of the counterculture Bopaintings are his great work, left behind. ∞ hemian values of the time, Gauguin viewed European

painters like Courbet and Manet revolutionized painting by making the everyday their subject matters and painting with a rougher style, called "unfinished" looking at the time. Previous to this, mythological and spiritual subjects painted in the smoothly blended Neoclassical style were still popular. Gauguin found a way to combine the everyday with the spiritual and paint it in a new, vibrant style, which would later deeply influenced the Expressionists of the 1910s-30s.

Dakota Pratt is an award winning artist who recently won the Lincoln Innovation

Award. He began creating art at age seven. His artistic focus is on functional sculptures & contemporary furniture. After graduating from the Columbus College of Art & Design with a BA, Dakota Pratt began exhibiting his work in art galleries & shows across the country. His work is now collected and exhibited throughout the United States. Dakota’s art has been influenced by the works of Henry Spencer Moore, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. Dakota comes from an artistic family. His parents, Rick and Denise Pratt, are known as two of America's leading makers of traditional and contemporary twig furnishings. Dakota has developed a keen sense of design and construction from this family tradition. Claes Oldenburg, a primary influence on Dakota, is an iconic American sculptor, best known for his public art installations typically featuring very large replicas of everyday objects. Falling easily into this Pop genre, Dakota starts each piece by using wooden or metal bases. He then fastens vintage bottle caps, flattened with a sledge hammer onto his forms. Each piece is then covered with an epoxy resin to create a polished finish. See Dakota’s work and meet him in person, Sat., Nov 10th at Ethos Contemporary Art in Newport Beach, see feature story, pg 18

The Collection methodically built in a 20 year span by Newport Beach developer Gerald Buck is described as “the best collection of California art that no one has ever seen.” The writer ponders -I can’t believe it, I’ve walked by the collection a million times without knowing it… housed in the now defunct Post Office in Laguna Beach. To date, the collection has been seen by only a select few. The first phase of the three presentations contains both Modern and contemporary favorites like the Peter Volkos ceramic tower and Thrasher, a newer color infused nightscape series by Peter Alexander from 1992 and also boasts some surprises - a Santa Monica Auctions offer post auction buying through mid December 2018

It’s Auction Season in Santa Monica Some of the most notable gallerists to emerge from the contemporary Los An-geles art scene: Blum & Poe, Patrick Painter, Craig Krull and the iconic Robert Berman Gallery have all called Bergamot Station Art Center in Santa Monica home. art-ecosystem. The 5 acre complex houses a unique auction house that both Chris-ties and Sotheby’s have called their “local rival”. The quintessential Santa Monica Auctions has been delivering auctions of blue-chip artists for 34 years now. Mu-seums, Dealers and seasoned collectors alike have fought it out in person, online and on the phone for their favorite Carlos Alamaraz, Warhol, Mapplethorpe, Sheppard Ferry and in the last auction, a record breaking Raymond Pettibone hammered at $181,000 for a small work on paper. The recent Oct. 7th Auction was open to the public and now hosts an after auction sale until mid. Dec.’18. www.smauctioms.com

LAM Gala Celebrates 100-Year Legacy in Grand Style 1918, a group of artists led by Anna Hills and Edgar Payne opened their first exhibition in a small pavilion near the Laguna Beach Hotel and formed the Laguna Beach Art Association. The rest is history! On Sat., September 29, Laguna Art Museum hosted the Centennial Ball, celebrating their 100-year legacy at the Festival of Arts grounds with proceeds benefitting the museum’s mission of providing a cultural and artistic center, art education for all ages, exhibitions, and excellent programming to the community for the next 100 years.
