Q&A Ariane LagunaBeach with

MacDonald of

DawsonColeFineArt

T

his year marks the 20th Anniversary of the premiere gallery in Laguna Beach: Dawson Cole Fine Art. With locations in Laguna Beach, Carmel and Palm Desert, Dawson Cole Fine Art has established their reputation as a leading West Coast destination for contemporary figurative sculpture, paintings, and important prints. Q: The gallery has experienced great success in the community as reflected in the celebration of your 20th Anniversary this year. What do you attribute to this long-term success? A: The gallery’s success can largely be attributed to the quality of the artists represented in the collecAriane with husband, Richard MacDonald Jr., tion, curating relevant and important exhibitions and and sons Dawson and Hudson cultivating client relations. As we stay apprised of leading trends in the market, we communicate that information to our clients. In addition, the gallery has offered engaging special events, from hosting the Los Angeles Opera & Cirque du Soleil performances to sponsoring Orange County Fashion Week. All of which contribute to our continued community involvement. Of course Richard MacDonald’s creativity and committed collectors have played a significant role. We are privileged to live in Orange County and love to promote the arts with a charitable cause. Q: You have also been very proactive in the community supporting local charities. Can you discuss one of your recent non-profit events? A: This summer we organized a Day of the Arts for young teenage residents of Olive Crest to foster awareness and appreciation for the arts. Olive Crest has provided emergency and long term shelter and care for abused, vulnerable and neglected children. The Laguna Beach community graciously Three Graces (with water feature) by Richard MacDonald came together to create a memorable day. The Laguna Art Museum organized docent led private tours of the museum’s collection, The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel hosted a beautiful luncheon, the Pageant of the Masters sponsored a Behind the Scenes tour and tickets to the Pageant through their Masters in Giving program while BJ’s Pizza provided dinner. After viewing the Pageant, one of the boys wanted to see an opera, which was especially rewarding. The arts are so vital to our culture and we were inspired to share the arts with the youth from Olive Crest. The Laguna Art Museum & Olive Crest were newly introduced & have discussed collaborating with a future summer arts program. Q: In reviewing past exhibitions, does a favorite exhibition you curated come to mind? A: The exhibition entitled Connections: Exploring the Master Mentor Relationship in Painting, was a favorite that

highlighted the different perspectives arrived at by two artists from the Bay Area – Wayne Thiebaud and Jian Wang. In centuries past the relationship between master and apprentice could be traced through the stylistic links reflecting the continuity of their connection. Connections exemplified this inspiration and connection in an exhibition of works with similar themes by the two California artists: landscape and still life. Wayne Thiebaud was Jian Wang’s teacher. To highlight the relationship & influence, the Thiebaud Family generously provided the gallery with exclusive original oil paintings from their private collection. Soon after this exhibition, we introduced Jian Wang to Jonathan Burke, the President of the Laguna College of Art & Design. Jian was invited by LCAD to teach Figurative and Landscape classes for the college and live in Laguna Beach during a Summer in Res- A recent opening night draws huge crowd idence program. Jian collaborated with the college and created a beautiful series of etchings that he then donated to LCAD for their permanent collection. Dawson Cole Fine Art hosted an artist reception and exhibited juried works from the LCAD workshops. The juriedin emerging artists enjoyed being a part of the show opporuntiy. We donated the etching, Cone, by Wayne Thiebaud to the Laguna Art Museum which was featured in their recent exhibition: From Wendt to Thiebaud: Recent Gifts for the Permanent Collection. We have also had numerous inspirational One-Man Shows for internationally renowned Richard MacDonald, a leader in the Neo-Figurative art movement.

DCFA’s Sculpture Garden routinely hosts events and benefits like Orange County Fashion Week (below)

Q: And last, what advice would you give to collectors? A: I’ve heard many stories where clients saw something they fell in love with in Paris, New York, etc.…and called the gallery back upon their return home only to be told that the oneof-a-kind piece had been sold. So my advice – if you find something you love, don’t hesitate! Visit the Gallery in Laguna Beach or at www.dawsoncolefineart.com. See page 9 LOCALARTS.COM

LACMA, Found in Translation: Design in California and Mexico, 1915–1985 is a groundbreaking exhibition and accompanying book about design dialogues between california and mexico. its four main themes—Spanish Colonial Inspiration, Pre-Hispanic Revivals, Folk Art and Craft Traditions, and Modernism—explore how modern and anti-modern design movements defined both locales throughout the twentieth century. half of the show’s more than 250 objects represent architecture, conveyed through drawings, photographs, and films to illuminate the unique sense of place that characterized california’s and mexico’s buildings. the other major focus is design: furniture, ceramics, metalwork, graphic design, and murals. placing prominent figures such as richard neutra, luis Barragán, charles and ray eames, and clara porset in a new context while also high-

known for his hard-edged, exuberantly colored watercolor drawings and paintings, which frequently depict the everyday spaces of his studio and garden. recurrent motifs such as potted plants in beautiful ceramic vessels made by his wife, ceramicist shio Kusaka, appear against a backdrop of the clarion blue skies of los angeles. wood trains his eye on these lush daily landscapes, often enlarging them to grand proportions that signal his fondness for small domestic pleasures. wood's new work—a new outdoor mural designed specifically to wrap the exterior of moca grand avenue— gleefully exhibits a strong cut-and-paste sensibility through its layering of shapes and forms. meant to be seen by pedestrians or through the windows of moving cars, wood's mural treats the urban architecture of downtown l.a. as a dynamic canvas on which to further explore his playful manipulation of scale, texture, color, and pattern. ADD NG DIMENSION Arthur Beaumont lecture at Pacific Club

LocalARTS Teams with Seneca for Summer Art Class Mark Kaufman, publisher of LocalARTS Magazine teamed with the Seneca Family of Agencies this past August for a day of art instruction. Nearly 20 foster and underprivileged children ranging in age from 8 -17 participated in the paint-along demo conducted by Kaufman. The object was to copy a Wayne Thiebaud Ice Cream Cone painting.“ We had our challenges.” Kaufman says. “At first most were struggling to keep up with the demo but I ‘coached’ them up and got them to paint more expressively, telling them to forget about making it perfect. I was so surprised how loose they got leading to some remarkable results. Thank you Seneca for the opportunity. I enjoyed it and I believe the kids did too.”

Seneca Family of Agencies believes that children and youth do not themselves fail, but are failed by the system, a system unable to address their complex and specialized needs. Seneca’s unconditional care means doing whatever it takes to help children and families thrive, even when faced with tremendous challenges.

Alan Scott Fine Art Management - Premier Art Installation for Private Art Collections In 1997, Alan Scott started Fine Art Management with a simple vision - a man passionate about art with a rich knowledge of home construction. Scott had planned only to help local galleries install artwork for their clients but over the years the collectors have become a driving force. Asked to return time

and time again to their homes, Scott developed a unique vision for a more sophisticated breed of professional art installer. Today, Scott is one of Southern California’s premier art installers, managing some of the finest art collections in Orange County, Los Angeles, across America, and Europe. The service of fine art management he provides–part interior design, part art consultation, part handyman–is one that many art buyers, galleries, and personal collectors both large and small value. Perle FINE To Evoke, Rather than Define. by Joy Shannon

geometric painting. She seemed to never let her art be defined as one abstract style, nor was she defined by her role as a female painter in a male-dominated art world.

Perle Fine in her Springs, New York studio, 1960

Study for Joie de Vivre, 1967

Abstract Expressionist from the New York school in the mid century, Perle Fine said of her art: “I propose to push forward beyond the known boundaries of art that evokes, rather than defines.” Her pioneering career, which spanned the 1930s to her death in 1988, found Fine experimenting with various realms of abstraction from textured gestural works to hard-edged

60

LOCALARTS.COM

While the vibrant movement of mid-century Abstract Expressionism in New York was dominated by so many male greats like Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and William de Kooning, female painters like Lee Krasner and Perle Fine were creating remarkable work, even if their works may not have been as publicized. Fine found early success for her paintings, showing at the influential Betty Parsons and Tanager Galleries and being one of the few female artists promoted by the Guggenheim Museum and Hilla Rebay. Additionally, Fine was one of the only female members of the 8th Street Club, a discussion group of artists and critics which included Franz Kline and William and Elaine de Kooning.

Fine began her dynamic career living in a cold-water flat in 8th Street in New York, attending the the Grand Central School of Art, where she met her husband and lifelong partner, fellow artist Maurice Berezov. Some of Fine’s early gestural works recall the power of the painted forms of Franz Kline, though Fine’s lines feel more delicate and soft. From the beginning of her career, Fine demonstrated her talent for creating balance, harmony and rhythmic variations in her works.

Summer 1, 1958

Figure Descending a Ladder, 1960

In 1954, Fine and Berezov moved to the Springs section of East Hampton in Long Island, where they built a studio in the woods, in close proximity to where their friend Lee Krasner lived. In her studio away from the art-world politics of the New York scene, she thrived and began to experiment with collaged paintings, combining scraps of paper, newspaper, aluminum and gold foil across white fields.

ine said of her use of color in her art: “My paintings speak in the only language I knowcolor… I like to light up a canvas with color; I like to make it shout or whisper; I like to make it spin...or make forms melt softly over the whole picture.” Her early-1950s works “The Prescience Series” are a good example of Fine’s ability to make her colors whisper with a mythic mystery. These pieces of varying color schemes are bordered with the smoky wisps of forms, as if emerging from a fog.

art history

Perle FINE when she was commissioned to paint an exact copy of Piet Mondrian’s unfinished work, the diamond-shaped “Victory Boogie-Woogie.” Mondrian had died before finishing this work and, in addition to the copy, Fine created her own imagining of how Mondrian would have completed the painting.

Prescience No. 9, 1952

Later in the 1960s, Fine began to paint with gridded geometric abstraction, influenced by the zen-garden-esque geometric pieces of Piet Mondrian. Responding to Mondrian’s painting concept which he called “Accordments,” Fine created geometric works she called “an acceptance, serene, tranquil, with evocations of being in tune with nature and the universe.” Fine had begun a painted conversation with Mondrian earlier in her career in 1947, Surge, 1960

62

LOCALARTS.COM

From 1961-1963, Fine painted “The Cool Series,” which saw the artist painting hardedged reductive, monochromatic works which seem to evoke meditative isolation. Of the series, Fine elaborated: “the expression is more than merely chemical or optical - it is metaphysical. The economy of means somehow seemed necessary to secure the sensation of the expression of the existentialist in art.” Though Fine was quoted as simply and pragmatically focused on painting “the thing itself,” her works still seem to strive towards describing the metaphysical, similar to the driving force behind the works of her contemporary Mark Rothko. And, just as the metaphysical existential spiritual experience “evokes, rather than defines,” so did the life’s work of Perle Fine.
