n May 31st, 2018, Craig Wells, President of the Board of Trustees, and Todd D. Smith, Director & CEO, of the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA), unveiled the design for the museum’s new building at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA, created by Morphosis, the global architecture and design firm led by Pritzker Prize-winner Thom Mayne. Expanding on the museum’s legacy of community enrichment and presentation of modern and contemporary art from artists rooted in Southern California and the Pacific Rim, OCMA’s new home will be defined by an open and engaging urban presence within Orange County’s largest center for arts and culture. Groundbreaking for the new building will take place in 2019, with a projected opening in 2021. OCMA closed its Newport Beach location in June, following a 41-year history at its Newport Center location. Temporary exhibitions will be presented starting this fall at a gallery space in South Coast Plaza Village. Ning Zhou Gallery Featuring the Photography of

International Master

ugust, 2018 marks the third anniversary of the Ning Zhou Gallery, beautifully situated between Main Beach and South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, California. It will be celebrated with a show of recent water-inspired art photographs by the gallery's namesake, Ning Zhou. Called Reflections on Refllections, the show will run from August 2 to October 15, 2018. Perhaps Ning's most notable gift as an artist is his uncanny ability to capture the moment - that fleeting instant - when place, time and the human condition coalesce in Nature - or more specifically for this collection - on a water surface - to reveal profound insights and emotional clarity in photographs which truly become a kind of visual poetry. Ning completes the package by printing his images in colors so richly saturated and reflective they appear to be backlit. Reflections on Refllections will surely be a must-see highlight of the summer season. Ning Zhou was born in Nanjing, China in 1963. Photography soon became his passion as a young boy. pre-visualizing his photographs - a skill he ultimately honed to an extraordinary degree. Even now, despite the advent of digital photography and with over 40 years of experience, this distinguishing capability is the touchstone of Ning's distinct style. Ning Zhou’s photography career began in the early 1980’s following graduation as one of the first in China to major in photography at the university level. His body of Nature-based work is nothing short of spectacular, images always classically balanced, symmetrical and meditative. Acclaim from his peers was almost inevitable. In China, Ning Zhou was honored to be named Preeminent Contemporary Art Photographer by the Association of Chinese Art Photographers. International recognition soon followed. Ning Zhou’s work has been exhibited in many solo shows in such places as China, Korea and the U.S.A. The inspiration for Reflections on Refllections was a 2007 exhibition in Athens, hosted by George Papandreou, then Prime Minister of Greece and a Ning Zhou collector. This show of 50

water reflection images generated a great deal of international buzz and a beautiful book. Today Ning Zhou divides his time between Nanjing, China - where he is President of the prestigious Nanjing Institute of Visual Arts and Vice Chairman of the Aesthetic Institute of Jiangsu Province - and Laguna Beach, California - where he serves as President of the East-West Culture and Arts Foundation and founder of the Ning Zhou Gallery. Just prior to going to press we learned that Ning Zhou had taken title to a beautiful building in Aliso Viejo which will house a museum of antique photographic equipment based on Ning's personal collection of more than 700 pieces. We will keep you posted about its opening. Through October 4, 2018 DRAWING ON THE PAST is a remarkable display of drawings, pastels, watercolors and etchings by California artists dating as far back as the 1880s and includes: a series of charcoal portraits by Paul Grimm (1891-1974); pastel paintings of intense color and soft texture by historical artist, William Griffith (1866-1940). Mission San Juan Capistrano Ortega Highway at Camino Capistrano, SanJuan Capistrano

Founded November 1, 1776 by Padre Junipero Serra, Mission San Juan Capistrano is the best known and most romantic of the 21 historic California missions. The "Jewel of the Missions" occupies a 10-acre site, including stately ruins of the great stone church, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812, and Serra Chapel, the oldest building in California. Visitors may also enjoy the mission’s colorful gardens, many museum rooms, bookstore and gift shop. New digital audio tour free with admission. Open daily, 8:30 to 5:00. OCMA unveils Incredible Plans for New Museum Building

On May 31st, 2018, Craig Wells, President of the Board of Trustees, and Todd D. Smith, Director & CEO, of the Orange County Museum of Art unveiled the design for the museum’s new building at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA, created by Morphosis, the global architecture and design firm led by Pritzker Prize-winner Thom Mayne. enrichment and presentation of modern and contemporary art from artists rooted in Southern California and the Pacific Rim, OCMA’s new home will be defined by an open and engaging urban presence within Orange County’s largest center for arts and culture. Groundbreaking for the new building will take place in 2019, with a projected opening in 2021. OCMA closed its Newport Beach location in June, Temporary exhibitions will be presented starting this fall at a gallery space in South Coast Plaza Village. House of Photographic Art (HOPA) Selected to Frame Prestigious Portrait Exhibit at AlbrechtKemper Museum On November 16th, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum in Saint Joseph, MO will present, Portraits Americana: A brief History of American Portrait Photography. For this exhibition, Guest Curator, Glenn Rand has chosen works that will

show how American artists used and are still using the photographic portrait to bring a greater understanding of the subjects, settings, personalities and the artists’ vision. This exhibition, which includes work by portrait photographer legend Phillip Stewart Charis and entirely framed by HOPA of San Juan Capistrano, is about American artists producing portraits since the turn of the 20th Century. It provides insights into the way these artists used various tools and approaches to reach the essence of their subjects.
