CALM IN THE
CHAOS:
The Prolific Work of
KENT Williams
Written by Evan Senn Playing somewhere between fantasy, fiction and the familiar, you will find the art of Kent Williams. His work? Think bright, often gestural, animated and sexually-charged representations of the human experience, in painting and drawing. Figurative by nature, Williams explores the many different angles of life, sometimes all at once. Imbued with turbulence and stillness at the same time, Williams attributes the intuitive energy in his work to the disorder of life and desire. The yearning, aching, itching want that we have, as humans, is undeniable. It is through this basic instinct that Williams finds our relatable humanity; reaffirming life through imitating it, he says, and playing with the ever-changing experiences our species is privy to.
Romantique, 2014, Kent Williams
Like a strange love child between Egon Schiele, Salvador Dali and Toulouse Latrec, his work has a style that is intimate and magnetic, and a thirst that is chaotically charged but satiated. Though his work has evolved and morphed into different series and styles over the past 20+ years, Williams’ work has a very specific quality that is unmatched. Playing with the complicated relationship between representational and abstract, Williams’ most recent body of work creates a world that is ambiguous and still familiar, “both real and unreal,” he says. The finished products are mind-bending expressions that

could pass for strange imaginary daydreams or surrealistic fantasies. His core strength that carries throughout all his works— whether graphic novel, oil painting or graphite drawing—is the delicate yet uncomfortable balance in playing with highly representational elements and abstracted aspects to find a tangible place for the human experience to live in and be absorbed perfectly. With a fondness for the history of painting and representational figurative artwork, its no wonder that Williams found his way to Laguna Beach to mentor the Laguna College of Art and Design MFA candidates. Originally from North Carolina, and With an extensive background in comic book and graphic novel illustration, his work grew from stylized animation to the most fascinating boundary-pushing figurative work in contemporary art today. Williams has be an inker, a colorist and an illustrator for hundreds of comic books since the early 1980s, including Hellblazer, The Sandman, Akira, X-Men, Batman, Wolverine, Vertigo, and other Marvel and DC comic books. His comic creations are unique and expressive, and feels like fine at, regardless of the form it comes in. His work with graphic novels became a more experimental place for him to delve deep into interpretation and play, as he explored the themes with a bit more freedom than in his comic work. Some of his more notable graphic novels include the 2005 novel The Fountain with Darren Aronofsky, Blood: A Tale with J.M. DeMatteis and Tell Me, Dark from 1992 with Karl Edward Wagner and John Ney Rieber. His comic book and graphic novel work have influenced his fine art, and vise versa, though his techniques tend to differ between the different avenues. His graphic work is haunting, suggestive and more visually playful with representation and environment. He creates an impression in his graphic work that feels more personal, and is of course, more directed with a narrative and a purpose. Often juxtaposed by the traditional text of
Vases: Ensor, 2014, Kent Williams
graphic novels and comic books, his work stands out in a hypnotic way, as if more expressive and intimate because of its stiff, unwavering textual neighbors. The influence of the graphic style of his work onto his fine art has become more apparent in recent years, with his most recent works finding an interesting space between expression and representation. In his most recent solo show at 101/EXHIBIT in Los Angeles, “How Human of You,” in December of 2014, Williams explored his world through finding the extremes—something new for him. From total abstraction and minimalist pencil drawings, to fully developed oil paintings and everything in between, Williams found a pathway to peace in exploration and play in experimentation. All compelling the same signature style and quality in his expression of humanity, Williams approached his environments with more direction and
developed—perhaps inadvertently—hypnotic and engaging narratives. Just having returned from exhibiting at the Art Wynwood art fair with Evoke Contemporary, and always preparing for continued on pg. 24

and Yuko Shimizu. Though it is clear he has affection for Asian textile, pattern, and gestural line quality, his work flutters in its own unique place, recalling the surrealism and abstract expressionism in its technical styles.

upcoming exhibits all across the country, Williams is currently preparing for a group exhibition at the Worchester Museum of Art in MA entitled “Samurai!,” curated by Eric Nakamura, Editor and Founder of Giant Robot Magazine. Williams is always on the move, whether in his art practice or physically traveling or showing work somewhere. In Williams’ recent work, he is exploring new concepts, new techniques, and new terrain. His work often has a mixed quality of stillness and movement, similar to the traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, that use line quality and abstracted environments to change perspective and perception of the subjects of an artwork. In the upcoming exhibition, “Samurai!,” Williams is one of many great contemporary artists that have been inspired by the samurai and find a personal voice in their examination of contemporary perceptions of this centuriesold tradition. Other artists in the exhibition include Miya Ando, James Jean, kozyndan, Mu Pan, Ferris Plock, Masakatsu Sashie, Rob Sato LOCALARTS.COM
Williams says he is fascinated by artists like Willem de Kooning and Gerhard Richter. de Kooning for his intelligence, depth and compositional sensibilities and Richter for his breadth of disparateness throughout his career. Williams’s recent abstractions are growing in importance compared to his older body of work, and he is excited to see where this attraction to the abstract will take him over time. His comfort and confidence in his intuition is something that helps his art practice find its own voice, without the pressure of expectation, and only the lifelong skills, fascination and dedication to lead the way through creation.
With inherent love for the mark-making process as a whole, his paintings are partially sculptural as well—although somewhat unintentional. The visceral quality of his process is visible in each piece. Standing in front of one of Williams’ paintings, the viewer is transported to a seemingly real moment, inside the painting itself. The movement and significance of every brush stroke, every line, every dot or dollop of color, pushes and pulls the viewer to a place of understanding, of experience; the kind of quality you see when you are standing in front of a Van Gogh or a Mark Rothko. Williams has been pushing and pulling boundaries and creating his own world with ease for decades; with every brush stroke, he engages our senses and reaffirms our strange humanity. www.kentwiliams.com. Vladimir Cora and Georgeana Ireland Live Painting a Huge Success at Musuem of Latin American Art “Tres Gracias Long Beach” a
collaborative painting created by Master Mexican artist Vladimir Cora protégée of Rufino Tamayo, and Contemporary American Artist Georgeana Ireland. The original painting was created as a live exhibition between these two ingenious artists during a special event at MOLAA “This was a unique experience for both of us,” stated Ireland, “neither of us speak each other’s language - English and Spanish.” Starting with a blank canvas, both artists painted the 60”x 80” canvass with Cora painting the figures and Ireland painting the background. This exhibition showed how two worlds of different cultures and languages can come together using the power of visual art. The finished painting, “Tres Gracias Long Beach”, will be auctioned May 30th at MOLAA’s Annual Gala, the major annual fundraiser for the art museum. For information, please contact the museum at (562)437-1689.

tieth century. Here in Southern California, on May 2nd, the community will have an opportunity to view paintings of historical masters as well as purchase those of contemporary painters who were (and are) inspired by light, nature, climate, and creative fellowship. The Huntington Beach Art Center in collaboration with the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and The Irvine Museum will be hosting a two-month exhibit entitled “California Impressionism: Plein Air Painting, Past and Present.” A unique concept for an exhibition is about to be revealed to art-lovers who also love Impressionist painting. The bold color, bravura brushwork, and “captured light” of this historical and contemporary artistic movement has captivated audiences on the West Coast ever since the turn of the twenCrystal Cove, 1912, William Wendt

Kate Hoffman, Director of the Huntington Beach Art Center, will open the doors of the Art Center to give viewers a glimpse of a group of artists united across history through their love of subject and their passion to paint outdoors, or en plein air. “Our vision for this show is to present to the public an exhibition that

they’ve never before seen, that is beautiful, historical, educational, and spectacular,” Hoffman notes. This exhibition will have a dual focus. On one hand, it will feature masterworks of painters who were inspired by this area in the early decades of the 20th century; enough to move here, build here, and start a colony of artists known today as the city of Laguna Beach. Alongside those works, the exhibition will also feature the creations of a select group of artists from the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA), many of whom live in California, and all of whom have painted within the State. The Art Center has invited both Signature and Artist members of LPAPA, whose works you see in galleries, magazines, competitions, exhibitions, and shows across the country.

These artworks have never before been on view at the Art Center, and merit special recognition for their significant place in this show. They will represent the attraction of the California coast and countryside for the early inhabitants of emerging communities, such as Carmel, Los Angeles, San Diego, Pasadena, and Laguna Beach. One of the attractions of this show is that it demonstrates how alive this spirit and style has been all along, from then until now. We are still attracted, along with the painters, to marvel at the rugged coasts, the monumental mountains, the arid beauty of the deserts, and the variety of natural scenery that we call ‘California.’ The exhibition demonstrates the kinship between these plein air painters across the pages of time, and across the history of the Golden State. It is a show that has something for everyone, from students studying the history of our state, for artists seeking inspiration from experienced plein air painters, and for collectors seeking the fresh new work of these contemporary masters. We will be hosting an artist’s panel during the show, featuring a Q & A session on plein air painting. All of the artworks created by the LPAPA artists will be available for sale, both at the reception, and for the duration of the show. (Kate Hoffman) Several special events are planned throughout the exhibition, including a Plein Air Workshop on May 16th, a Latin Jazz concert on May 31st, and Art for Lunch on June 4th. California Impressionism: Plein Air Painting, Past and Present is open to the public May 2nd through July 4th, at the Huntington Beach Art Center, 538 Main Street, Huntington Beach, CA, 92648. Admission to the exhibition is by donation. For questions regarding the exhibit, please contact the Art Center at 714-374-1650. My goal was, and still is, to bring fine art with a cosmopolitan feel to Laguna Beach. I designed Avran Art and Design to be a reflection of myself: my passion and excitement. For 19 years, I followed a high-stress, corporate career path in Information Technology. 3 years ago, I decided to follow my dream and create something based on life, beauty and happiness. Avran gives me a reason to smile everyday. It is my goal to give our clients, neighbors, and community reasons to smile as well! How have you grown/ changed since then? What new directions are you going in or wanting to explore? As I continue to learn the intricacies of the art industry and the particularities of Laguna Beach, the business side of Avran improves and becomes more efficient. Avran Art + Design

Avran Art+Design ture. Growing up in Budapest, I have had the opportunity to become friends with many of these talented artists. When I opened Avran, I wanted to infuse it with some of my own culture and heritage. So, I put my personal, Hungarian glass art collection on view. We continue to source new and exciting glass works from not just Hungary but all over the world. You offer a range of works, from the smaller and more attainable to those of significant scale and value. What basic advice do you offer the novice collector? I tell all collectors, novice and experienced, that the most important aspect of a work is the emotional connection you have with it. It must be something you want to live with and interact with on a daily basis.
Father Bill Moore “The World is a Book” mixed media
However, the artistic core of the gallery has not changed. Since day one, I have only exhibited works that I have a strong emotional connection with and that I find to be beautiful, exhilarating and provocative. We have been very lucky in that our artists are not only amazingly talented, but wonderful people as well. In thinking about the future of Avran, my goal is simple: to continue to bring new, fresh, and exciting art to Laguna Beach. I will never stop looking for beauty in any media. On that note, my next venture may be find an intimate space to showcase some black and white photography that I have been hiding in the back of the gallery. Glass sculpture seems to have a special presence in your gallery, how did that aspect come to be? Hungary has a long-standing glass art cul-
Once that requirement is met, it is important to look at how the work will sit in your space. Dimensions, colors and media should all be taken into account. You have also been very proactive in the community, reaching out. What would you like to see in the future of art in Laguna Beach? Laguna Beach is a wonderful community, especially for artists and art galleries. The beauty of being here is that we have many, many galleries but very few are competing with each other. Instead we work together to each other’s benefit and the benefit of the artist. The city also encourages its art culture with summer festivals, artwalk, artists’ studios and the art school. I am happy to be here! The gallery is conveniently located at 540 South Coast Highway, Suite 106 (and Exclusive Gallery Suite 104) in Laguna Beach. Hours of operation are from 11 am – 7 pm daily. The gallery also provides a captivating backdrop for special events, including private art gatherings, charitable fundraisers and cocktail receptions. Learn more at avranart.com or call 949) 494-0900

marc whitney Whitney Gallery in Laguna Beach By Torrey Cook
m
arc Whitney is widely recognized by collectors and artists alike as one of the most talented living painters of the classical realist tradition. Marc’s signature captures of life - unmade beds, nudes, floral arrangements, are found in museums and private collections around the globe, he is courted by some of the most prestigious galleries in the world, but he is proud to call Laguna Beach home. Marc considers his paintings poetic and they are... as is his life. Whitney began his formal art education at age 14, when he received a summer scholarship to what is now the Laguna College of Art + Design. It was the late 60‘s and he bummed rides into Laguna from Huntington Beach to study by day, and hang out with local working artists at night. It was a colorful time for Laguna- a time of no rules and wild fun and he soaked it all in. In his first few years of college while taking science classes and looking for his path, he met a girl who had a paint set. He asked to borrow her paint set and fell in love. She swept him off his feet and in turn, he swept her off hers. Together they traveled to Philadelphia, where he spent a decade in intensive classical training at several art schools including the Frudakis Academy of Fine Arts, the University of the Arts, and the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In the early 90‘s, Jackie and Marc would later marry and return to Laguna Beach and when other gallery owners didn’t “get” his work, the solution was easy - they opened their own space. Marc’s work speaks to people in an intelligent manner - allowing each viewer to have a unique experience. His paintings not overly cluttered with a multitude of items, with the focus on mood, philosophy and storytelling - a highly personal experience. It was only natural that Jackie be the one to sell Marc’s work. Over the past twenty years, Marc and Jackie have been a staple of the Laguna art community and now have collectors all over the world. Marc and Jackie warmly welcome visitors to their gallery and it is easy to spend an afternoon talking art and life. In turn, Laguna has bonded with them. The Original Mad Men: Chéret, Lautrec and Mucha by Joy Shannon
“I
t's hard to imagine cities without a barrage of huge advertisements. From color posters and billboards to the bright lights of neon signs and LED screens, advertisements fill the skyline and our vision as we walk through urban landscapes. Yet, at one time, this phenomenon was just emerging. Paris during the 1890s saw the birth of advertising as we know it to this day, and famous artists including Jules Chéret, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha were at the forefront of this new art form of graphic design.
New York began to be filled with color advertisements. Once this technology existed, artists began to apply their eyes for design to the medium and the new modern graphic design industry was born. With poster designers like Jules Chéret designing vibrant, colorful posters with balanced, eye-catching layouts, Paris became the capital of this emerging art form.
Just the same as today, the advertisements of the 1890s were reflective of and dependent upon emerging technologies. While lithography had existed since 1796, it was expensive to produce and usually reserved for illustrations in costly books or maps. It was not until chromolithography, or multicolored lithographs, could be produced cheaply and in mass quantities by the 1880s that the urban streets of cities like Paris, London and Aristide Bruant, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Influenced by the frivolity of French Rococo paintings of the 1700s, Cherét created advertising imagery with free-spirited women frolicking about jubilantly in flowing skirts. Called the "father of the modern poster," Chéret mastered what would become a staple in the advertising industry for the next century and beyond: using sex to sell products. His stylish women became lovingly known by the Parisian public as "Cherettes," and their joyful images were used to sell everything from liquor to hair dye. Because Chéret's women were not depicted in continued on pg. 62

the usual extremes- either as a puritan or a prostitute- but were some other new definition of a freespirited female, Chéret was often called the "father of women's liberation." Most significantly to the artists around him, Chéret's poster lay-out style, use of color and movement and masterful use of the lithographic medium, paved the way for his contemporaries including Toulouse-Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha, to create their own spin on the poster.
Biscuits Lefévre-Utile, Alphonse Mucha
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a Bohemian painter living and working in the Montmartre quarter of Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec was primarily a figurative painter, painting the night life of Montmartre in and around the famous nightclub the Moulin Rouge. His works show a graceful and, at times, almost fragile contour line around the figure, and this delicate line work translated to his poster design. ToulouseLautrec used the lithographic medium differently from Chéret, being greatly influenced by the Japanese woodblock prints by artists like Hokusai who visited Europe from Japan during this era. Showing this Japanese influence, Toulouse-Lautrec's designs often employed large simple blocks of bold color. He then combined this simplicity in design with his Western composition style from his training as a painter, placing forms in the foreground against backgrounds in silhouette, creating depth. Arguably Toulouse-Lautrec's most famous poster design, he used this composition style to create an eyecatching poster for the Moulin Rouge in 1891 advertising "La Goulue," a famous can-can dancer of the day. His artfully designed posters are so sleek, modern and experimental in their design, they could be at home amongst the advertisements of the 1960s.
Alphonse Mucha, a Czech-born painter and designer living and working in Paris at the turn-of-thecentury, took the lithographic poster medium to another level entirely, using the layers of printed color to blend in a painterly way. His designs would ultimately help define the look of the Art Nouveau movement of the 1890s through the 1910s. Mucha first made a name for himself in 1895 by creating a poster of the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, which she was so pleased with that she secured a contract with him to produce all her theatrical advertising. "The Mucha Look" became synonymous with richly colored images of women with stylized flowing hair, wearing Neoclassical garments and framed by floral halos. Mucha's style became so popular, he produced an inundation of posters, calendars, book illustrations and jewelry, wallpaper, carpet and theatre designs.
Cacao Lhara, Jules Chéret
62
LOCALARTS.COM
Though each of these artists are still influential on visual artists to this day, because of the changeable nature of the trends of advertising, their design styles were outdated by the move towards Art Deco advertising by the 1920s. Mucha, in particlar, enjoys periodic revivals of his design style, notably seen amongst the psychedelic posters of the 1960s and even the design of music concert posters and album covers to this day. The posters of Chéret, ToulouseLautrec and Mucha are considered collectable fine art now, which is an interesting shift to happen to a technically "throw away" medium. ♦

OCMA Exhibit Features 24 Emerging Contemporary Chinese Artists The Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) is pleased to present My Generation: Young Chinese Artists. An extended look at the new generation of artists emerging in mainland China since 2000, the year that China opened wide its doors to international artists and that Chinese artists began to command attention in the global arena. All artists in the OCMA presentation were born after 1976 - the
end of the Cultural Revolution. Almost all of them are products of the One Child Policy and have grown up in a country with a high-powered market economy. They are ambitious, determined, and technically sophisticated with much to say about their homeland - positive and negative - and are able to navigate around the restrictions of censorship and cultural differences. “My Generation allows us to explore the role these emerging Chinese contemporary artists have in a globalized art world,” said OCMA Director and CEO Todd D. Smith. “With its breadth and scope of artists, media, and approaches to art making, the exhibition provides an unprecedented look inside one of the most fascinating developments in the art world today: Chinese art of our time.” On view 6/27- 10/11, 2015. www.ocma.net Young Chinese Artists at OMCA
