ith an eclectic mix of artists, hailing from various parts of the globe, The Signature Gallery is featuring this diversity in their upcoming show, “Around the World”. “We have been honored to represent artists who have either started their lives and careers in other countries, or have the privilege of traveling widely to expand their artistic horizons and repertoire of subject matter,” says Gallery Director Jessica Fry. Beginning September 1st, 2016, collectors, curators and art enthusiasts alike can look forward to an enticing opportunity to view works from these artists and the artwork that represents different geographical locations and cultures from around the world. Meet your favorite oil painters and see the vibrant cities, states, and countries they have been inspired to represent. Deep Secret, Jenny Simon
“Around The World” will feature a selection our most popular artists including: Impressionistic work by Charles Pabst and his daughter Cara Pabst Moran, Urban Cubism by Joëlle Blouin, Abstract work by Jenny Simon, Surrealism by Reid Richardson, and Figures by Manuel Avendano. In addition, The Signature Gallery collection will exhibit brand new pieces of work presented by each of these artists. Artist Manuel Avendano, originally from a small village in Mexico, has risen from his humble beginnings to become the official portrait painter for the last two presidents of Mexico -- President Vicente Fox and President Felipe Calderon. “Living in small and large cities in Mexico gave me a great source of inspiration, as well as a strong Hispanic influence. My subjects are mostly people in the traditional Hispanic scene -Flamenco dancers, women with sombreros, tango dancers, etc. And it's the female figure that I mostly use to give the delicate beauty factor to my paintings.” Through extraordinary visual imagery, Reid Richardson communicates profound visions of hope for the future and nostalgia of his youth. His

distinct color palette, subject matter and technique resonate with a growing audience. Having an appetite for self exploration in a modern world, his intention is to exploit the hidden meaning in the simple beauties of life’s nuances. His passion is to create bold images of poetic skies and surrealistic landscapes that stirs emotion and engages the intellect. When Joëlle Blouin was first introduced to the gallery, her husband needed to interpret her beautiful Quebecois French. She has since mastered English
with the same grace and elegance with which she now paints her American urban scenes. But whether it’s the cityscape of Paris, Hong Kong, or San Francisco, her subject matter has an edgy distinctive style that Joëlle has branded as her own. Blouin was recently granted U.S. citizenship based on the unique contribution she alone has made to the art world. Bowers Museum California Bounty: Images and Identity, 1850 -1930 Bowers Museum in Santa Ana has opened California Bounty: Image and Identity, 1850 – 1930, a momentous exhibition that features a rambling journey through California’s visual history depicted by many of the state’s most prominent artists. The exclusive exhibition is currently on display at the Bowers Museum and is continuing indefinitely. Guest curated by art historian Susan M. Anderson, California Bounty is the first curatorial interpretation of the museum’s distinguished painting collection since 1994. The exhibition highlights the museum’s commitment to collecting fine art over its 80year history and brings to the forefront 60 paintings that represent the finest of its California Art collection. These works include quintessential plein air paintings of California’s idyllic interior and coastal landscapes, realistic still lives depicting the bountiful fruits and flowers the state offers through its ideal year-round climate and stunning portraits of notable and common people who have contributed to California’s history in various ways. A FRESH APPROACH. Each work has undergone conservation and framing as needed in order to offer visitors an optimal viewing experi-

ence. The collection includes never displayed works and well-loved collections that have not been on view in decades. The exhibition is being presented in the original 1936 Bowers Museum building that is now known as the Mary Muth Historic Wing. The Wing has been dramatically renovated for this exhibition and is now equipped with 21st century lighting.

Viewers will take a rambling journey through California’s visual history, a history shaped by a unique mixture of Mexican and Anglo traditions as well as the state’s position on the Pacific Rim. The exhibition looks at the way art in California reflected the state's natural bounty as well as the promotional efforts of real estate developers and others to bring

William Jewett, Northern California’s first most influential portraiture artist. His painting of entrepreneur David Hewes, famous for providing the golden spike connecting the transcontinental railroad, shows his sitter as a younger man before he became involved in the citrus business in Southern California. William and Alberta McCloskey who worked separately and collaboratively. The couple is best known for their often copied realistic images of paper-wrapped citrus and their ability to capture their sitters’ personalities through life-like portraits. The Bowers is proud to be the largest holder of the McCloskey’s work in the world.
Other artists include Anna Athena Hills, Roger Kuntz, Edgar Payne, Henri Penelon, John Hubbard Rich, George Gardner Symons and many, many more. A catalog, Legacy of Bounty: Paintings from the Bowers Museum delves even deeper into the museum’s assemblage of paintings through 168 pages. Focusing on the breadth of the collection, the hardbound catalog includes 138 of the museum’s most important historic, plein air, American and European paintings. The catalog also includes two essays, one recounting the 80year story behind the collection’s formation, and another by California Bounty curator Susan M. LCAD Welcomes Jian Wang as Summer Artist-In-Residence Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) recently announced Jian Wang as its Summer Artist-in-Residence. LCAD’s invitation to Wang was the result of an introduction of Wang to LCAD President, Jonathan Burke,by Dawson Cole Fine Art owners Ariane and Richard Macdonald Jr., "We are honored to welcome to LCAD as our Summer Artist-InResidence a representational painter and printmaker from China with such significant talent as Jian Wang," said LCAD President, Jonathan Burke. "We cannot wait to see the caliber of work produced by his students and the exhibition of their art at Dawson Cole Fine Art Gallery." Wang's work, described as realism with an impressionist inference, is influenced both by the
landscape and by contemporary artists and his mentors such as Fred Dalkey, Wayne Thiebaud and Oliver Jackson. During his six-week residency, Wang is utilizing an LCAD studio for painting and printmaking and will teach two workshops.

Once again, like the proverbial diamond in the rough, or hidden gem, the O.C. at large fails to recognize depth and beauty within its boundaries and squarely within reach. Ok, maybe the diamond analogy doesn’t apply given how many here are tuned into bling and the great lengths taken to attain it.

Here in the land of so much superficiality, so much excess and access, so much potential, the social and cultural awareness continuously seems to focus on the surface. This isn’t some revolutionary insight, it’s permeated the ‘take’ on Orange County for two, three and four decades. Yes, there are many exceptions but in general, this sprawl of middle-class, upper middle-class and

elite are mostly only cognizant of what represents status and fait accompli. We’re surrounded by fortune, some of it earned, a lot of it bestowed, yet it seems we measure value by numbers and goods rather than deeds, talents and civic good will. The case of sculptor Márton Váró reflects in part reflects the shallowness of a society both unaware and ill prepared to stop and smell a worldrenowned and treasured rose. In our own backyard, Váró has crafted, cut, chiseled, honed, polished and exposed some of the more important and monumental pieces of carved sculpture the U.S. has seen in recent years. Yet puzzlingly so, he remains nearly invisible to the institutions and culture venues nearby. Orange County is full of talent, there are any number of accomplished painters and sculptors, but Váró isn’t just accomplished, he’s more, much more, and will likely be legendary. árton is a ripe 73 years old who toils away daily in a semi-passionate rage at his maintenance yard studio in the heart of Irvine. A welcomed invitation leads me down a paved back lot through a hallway of aging storage containers baking their content in the afternoon sun.

nated with the arts. He studied sculpture at the Ion Andreescu Institute of Arts in Cluj, Romania from 1960-1966. In 1970 he moved to Debrecen, Hungary where he completed several public sculptures and was awarded the Munkacsy Prize in 1984. The Munkacsy Prize carries National and International distinction, this isn’t your best of show at a local art festival. In 1989 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, a grant from the Council for International Exchange of Scholars in Washington, D.C. He then, through the Fulbright, landed in Irvine in 1989 becoming affiliated with the University of California, Irvine to study the relationship between architecture and sculpture where he remains today. Váró does things with stone like Shakespeare does with phrase. His sensitivity and fine-tuning seem counter intuitive to a hammer, stone and grinder. His works are collected locally but not at all like they are nationally and abroad. Puzzling. The Bass Performance Hall in Forth Worth, Texas is an architectural and civic point of pride for all of Texas, not just because of its unique dome and outstanding acoustics but mostly because of Váró’s incomparable Angels that soar up the great façade and seemingly call out to the masses all the gods’ music. Váró, winner of a competition to design and carve the 48-foot angel reliefs on the Hall’s façade offers this. “To me, angels rep-

He’s dressed in matching whites, hat, mask, shirt, trousers and shoes, tipping off this visitor to consider wearing white next time through. Marble dust carpets the dirt plot like a light snowfall.
In the midst of this modest space are several marble figures, each in various stage of completion, some far enough along that his mastery has given life. resent the rediscovery of beauty and the triumph of the human spirit.”
He sculpted individual pieces of the angels—each with 13-foot brass trumpets and wings rising 30 feet in height—from 104 blocks of indigenous limestone over a twoyear period in 1998 here in this outdoor studio in Irvine. Hard for me to imagine such colossal works being designed, cut, crafted and assembled right here under our noses, maybe there was a mall opening up. But it’s not just Fort Worth’s Bass Hall, other examples of the sculptor’s work can be seen in Palm Springs, Budapest, Munich, Vienna, Amsterdam, and Dallas. ‘Stepping Out’ reflects his admiration for Michelangelo—the marble is from the same quarry Michelangelo used five hundred years ago —while the powerful sense of the block, and stone as a material, resonates with the modern masters Constantin Brancusi and Henry Moore. In ‘The Annunciation,’ commissioned by the Ave Maria University of Florida, the Virgin Mary strides forward breaking the confines of the sculptural relief format. Here,

Váró sits and openly talks about his influences, he’s a scholar as much as he is an artist. Like most greats, he has historical insight, understanding and reverence. His small but potent library of studio books are in a constant shuffle. He can speak at length about Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Michelangelo or Praxiteles. Márton Váró has his fans and admirers, he has his collectors, supporters and the respect of his contemporaries. The puzzling part is how this overwhelming talent has had to struggle to gain ground here in his chosen home, undiscovered locally, while firmly in good grace worldwide. It’s beyond time for the local municipalities, institutions and venues to step up. We have a giant amongst us, a world-class talent, beyond worthy, deserving somewhere close to leave his footprint. ut of sorrow entire worlds have been built, out of longing great wonders can be willed…” Musician and author Nick Cave beautifully described something we can see so poignantly in the life of artist Vincent Van Gogh and his loved ones who championed his work. Van Gogh channelled sorrow, longing, and pain into his remarkable creations, while his brother Theo and sister-in-law Johanna Van Gogh-Bonger, channeled their love, loyalty and sorrow of loss into a determination to share Van Gogh’s works with the world. We all need a champion, at some point in our lives. Someone who believes in who we are and what we do, even when we do not or can not. Latenineteenth century Post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh, had two major champions who helped his work achieve fame when he could not: his brother Theo Van Gogh and sister-in-law Johanna Van Gogh-Bonger. Notoriously, Van Gogh has been known in art history as a painter who only sold one painting during his lifetime, and toiled at his work with, sadly, very little outside recognition. During Van Gogh’s lifetime, which was plagued by mental illness, anxi-

ety and longing, his brother Theo supported him financially and emotionally, allowing the artist to solely focus on painting. While, Van Gogh poured his own mental anguishes into his art, producing over 2,100 works, it seems that the loving consistency in his life was his brother Theo, who believed in his talents. Theo was an art dealer, who showed contemporary Impressionist artists including Degas and Monet, and used his connections to help Van Gogh meet other contemporary artists including Gaugin, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Seurat. It was Theo who arranged for Gaugin and Van Gogh to paint and live together in a house in Arles, France. Though this arrangement was short-lived for the volatile pair, the arrangement gave Van Gogh a creative boost. He produced some of his vibrantly famous works around that time, including his 1888 works Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers and The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night. In the extensive correspondence between Theo and Vincent Van Gogh, of which mostly Vincent’s letters survive, it is exceedingly apparent that Theo consistently encouraged his often depressed and frustrated brother. The loving bond between the Van Gogh brothers can be seen in both of their deaths. After Vincent Van Gogh died in 1890 at 37, of what is believed to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound, Theo’s health rapidly declined. Theo died six months later at age 33, from the syphilitic infection “dementia paralytica," aggravated by what a doctor said was "heredity, chronic disease, overwork, (and) sadness.” With Theo’s death, Vincent lost his first most committed champion, and what little notice he had received in the art world from his first exhibitions during the late 1880s could have been lost, with his work falling back into obscurity.

Yet, with Theo’s death in 1891, his widow Johanna Van Gogh-Bonger stepped in to carry on the work of championing Van Gogh’s works. She had inherited the works of Van Gogh as well as the letter
correspondence between Theo and Vincent. Johanna wrote in her diary, on the 14th of November 1891: “Besides the child he [Theo] has bequeathed me another task – Vincent ‘s work – to get it seen and appreciated as continued on pg. 62

much as possible; keeping all the treasures that Theo and Vincent had collected intact for the child – that, too, is my work.”

Additionally, Johanna maintained connections in the art world with painters and friends of Van Gogh, Eugène Boch and Émile Bernard, who helped her continue the promotion of Van Gogh’s works. It was Bernard who encouraged Johanna to publish the letters of Theo and Vincent, in hopes that they would “help make Van Gogh’s artistic aspirations understandable.” With great foresight, Johanna compiled these letters into a volume, which was first published in Dutch in 1914. Additionally, between 1901 and 1914, Johanna contributed Van Gogh’s works to some very important retrospectives and group shows. At these shows in Paris, Amsterdam, New York, and Berlin, Van Gogh’s vibrant and textural painting work was seen by a new generation of artists, who went on to create avant-garde move-

ments including Fauvism and Expressionism, which deeply owe much to the ideas of Van Gogh. Johanna’s promotion of Van Gogh’s works was sharply criticized in 1892 by artist Richard Ro-land Holst, who called her “blinded by sentimentality” and that “she forgets that her sorrow is turning Vincent into a god.” But whether it was her sorrow at the loss of both her husband Theo and his beloved brother Vincent that propelled her to make it her life’s work to get Vincent’s work shown, the result was the sharing of Van Gogh’s powerful creative legacy with the greater world, which will continue to benefit the art world for generations to come. Johanna showed and sold many of Van Gogh’s works during her lifetime, with her crowning achievement being in 1924 when the National Gallery in London purchased an 1888 painting of sunflowers. Johanna died shortly after this achievement in 1925; with Theo’s and her work on behalf of Vincent being completed. Johanna’s private collection of Van Gogh’s works can be seen today as the bulk of the collection in the Van Gogh Museum. ∞

LOCALNEWS NOTES Scott Hess in Like Mark at Coastline Art Gallery
“Like Mark: Obsessively Collecting Friends” 7/30 - 9/30 at Coastline Community College Gallery This exhibition examines Facebook and how it operates as political, social and commercial phenomenon. When reality and fantasy are mixed in the age of avatars and celebutants, we have to ask questions not only about re-presentation, but also about how we are all entering into a ‘curatorial condition’ of the self. “Like Mark” is both an example of horizontal crowdsourcing as an exhibition event and a moment that allows us to look at varied interpretations of how we represents ourselves and others in an era where life is lived as a series of “status updates”. The exhibition will include pseudo voyeuristic and realistic painted portraits of Mark Zuckerberg. There will also be an installation of portraits, or “profile pictures”, made from multiple, 15" x 15" panels that were supplied by the art gallery. All of these will have been painted from the local arts community as an example of the power of social net-
