Celebrate the Legacy Laguna Plein Air Painters Association

A
s early as 1886, plein air painters came to Laguna Beach to paint the clear and intense light that characterizes the sheer natural beauty of our coastal community. These artists, who would become the founders of the California Impressionist Style, included William Wendt, George Garden Symons, Granville Redmond, Franz A. Bischoff, Frank Cuprien, Anna Hills, Donna Schuster and Edgar Payne, among many others. Norman St. Clair is credited with establishing Laguna Beach as an Artists’ Colony around 1903. LPAPA’s Plein Air Project The Laguna Plein Air Painter’s Association (LPAPA) mission is to preserve the history of the plein air movement of 19th century California, to support the tradition as it exists today, and to foster a network among plein air painters nationwide. LPAPA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization based in Laguna Beach, California, with a membership and art community presence on a national and global level. It was founded in Laguna Beach in 1996
LPAPA is considered the steward of Laguna’s artistic legacy with a mission dedicated to preserving the plein air tradition of painting for future generations. LPAPA shares a parallel centennial history with the present day Laguna Art Museum. In keeping with tradition, LPAPA curates a new show every month at their LPAPA In Residence Gallery, located at Forest & Ocean Gallery 480 Ocean Ave Laguna Beach. The Plein Air Project is LPAPA’s Education Program lead by its Director of Education and signature artist member Jeff Sewell, Director of Community Relations and artist member Celeste Gilles, and LPAPA’s In Residence Gallery talks

he House of Photographic Art (HOPA) has always maintained a singular mission of introducing the fine art of photography to Orange County, bridging San Diego and Los Angeles counties as major West Coast reservoirs of important photography of the 20th and 21st centuries. HOPA aims to raise a local awareness of the breath of photographic styles while building a wider appreciation for photography as a highly collectible fine art medium. Dusk till Dawn May 27 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; September 28 Dusk till Dawn is an exhibition that goes against the grain of what we typically think of as landscape painting. Usually, an artist will paint a beautiful landscape bursting in bright sunlight with colorful trees and flowers, things one would expect to see during the day. This exhibition is different, as the paintings on display show those same subjects but at night or at the outer edges of the day, when the sun is setting or when it is rising.

Art can be such a needed and welcome respite from the troubles of this world. One can see this most clearly when looking back upon the careers of artists who weathered the massive political and social upheaval of the first half of the twentieth century. One such artist whose work embodies a peaceful, intriguing and often mystical retreat from such chaos, is the Spanish-born Surrealist Remedios Varo. Varoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dream-like pieces depict androgynous creatures within spiritual atmospheres, with references to mysticism, alchemy and sacred geometry. Creating work that strikingly stands universally outside of any time and place, Varo combines influences from Christian Gothic altar pieces, the Renaissance-era paintings of the enigmatic Hieronymus Bosch, the drafting craftsmanship she learned from her engineer father and Eastern and Western mysticism. As in Eastern Yogism or Western Gnosticism, Varoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s works discuss the idea of personal alchemy, or personal transformation and en-

lightenment through study, contemplation and spiritual practice. In a world of chaos, Varo’s paintings speak of finding spiritual solace within.
works. Finally settling in Mexico City, where she painted until the end of her life in 1963, Varo stated, “I have found the tranquility that I have always searched for.”
Perhaps the theme of Remedios Varo's life was set first by her namesake given to her by her mother, who named her “Remedios” in honor that she was a “remedy” for her mother’s sorrow over the loss of a previous child. Varo, born in Spain in 1908, was forced to flee two wars, the Spanish Civil War and Nazi-occupied France, in order to find the peace she needed to keep creating her mystical

Notably, Varo spent time with Spanish Surrealists Óscar Domínguez and Esteban Francés, along with the French Surrealist poet, Benjamin Péret, who became her partner of some years. In 1937, after the Spanish Civil War erupted, Varo followed Péret to Paris where they stayed together until it was occu-

pied by the Nazis. They fled to Mexico City in 1941, where Varo remained to the end of her days, painting the most famous of her works towards the end of her life in the 1950s and early 60s. While Varo was introduced to perhaps her most famous Mexican painter contemporaries, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, she seemed to keep mostly to herself and a tight-knit few ex-patriot artist friends, including the Surrealists Leonora Carrington and Kati Horna. Art historians have interpreted both Friday Kahlo’s and Varo’s work as reflecting similar cultural paradigms. Amongst the Surrealist movement of the early twentieth century, female artists were often not taken as seriously as their male artistic counterparts. The struggle for personal identity can be interpreted very distinctly in Kahlo’s works, while Varo’s less-obviously personal subject matter may hide the struggles with identity within their presentation of the spiritual mysteries. Intriguingly, Varo’s works delve beyond the confines of gender- and may be even beyond identity itself- to the gender-less spirit world, where her androgynous characters seem to play with the vibrations of music, create experiments of alchemy and transform their worlds into wondrous havens for the soul. Perhaps that is Varo’s greatest alchemy of all: she created a remedy for chaos within her art.

Founded November 1, 1776 by Padre Junipero Serra, Mission San Juan Capistrano is the best known and most romantic of the 21 historic California missions. The "Jewel of the Missions" occupies a 10-acre site, including stately ruins of the great stone church, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812, and Serra Chapel, the oldest building in California.
