The Northeast-10 Conference Currently in its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont (Saint Michael’s). Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008-09, the University of New Haven replaced Bryant University, which moved up to NCAA Division I, and this year, Adelphi University became the conference’s 16th member, tied for the most in Division II. The NE-10 men’s ice hockey schedule is comprised of five games, with each school playing its conference opponents once. The season is capped off by a six-team conference tournament, with the top two teams in the regular season standings earning byes into the semifinals. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.

Head Coach Chris Davidson Chris Davidson ’99 Head Coach Fourth Season Chris Davidson, who has guided the Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team to two Northeast-10 Conference Tournament championships in his first three seasons as head coach, enters his 12th season as a college hockey coach in 2010-11, and his fourth at the helm of the Purple Knights. He has compiled a 30-46-6 record in his first three seasons as head coach. In his first year as head coach in 2007-08, Davidson guided the Purple Knights to the NE-10 regular season and tournament championships. The team finished with an overall record of 12-14-1, including 4-1-0 in NE-10 play, and Davidson earned the league's Coach of the Year award in the process. Davidson led the Purple Knights to another NE-10 Tournament title in 2008-09, as he guided the fifth-seeded squad to the championship. Saint Michael's finished 11-15-2 in 2008-09, winning its last four games. In 2009-10, Davidson led the team to a 3-1-1 record in NE-10 play, and a 7-17-3 overall mark. The team won its last three home games of the season, including a victory versus Southern New Hampshire in the NE-10 Quarterfinals. Prior to his promotion in March of 2007, Davidson served as an assistant coach to long-time head coach Lou DiMasi for seven years. A native of Clinton, N.Y., Davidson graduated from Saint Michael's in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in English literature, and earned a master's degree in business administration in 2006. Davidson has been instrumental in delivering a number of talented players to Saint Michael's over his tenure. During this time, one Purple Knight was named an All-American, 20 have earned All-ECAC accolades and 19 have received NE-10 honors. He has recruited three Players of the Year, two Goaltenders of the Year, and two Defensive Players of the Year. Eight of Davidson's recruits have signed professional contracts, while another has represented Canada at the Maccabiah Olympic Games. The 34-year-old Davidson returned to Saint Michael's before the start of the 2000-01 season, after serving as the top assistant for one year at Manhattanville College of the ECAC West. At Manhattanville, Davidson's primary duty was as the recruiting coordinator. In his first four seasons as an assistant at Saint Michael's, Davidson helped guide the Purple Knights to three consecutive Division II Championships (2002-04). In his 11 years at Saint Michael's, the Purple Knights have qualified for the playoffs each year. In addition to his work at the collegiate level, Davidson has worked at various USA Hockey Select Regional Camps. Since 2002, Davidson has been a member of the Player

Development and Select Coaching Staff for the New England District. In the summer of 2007, Davidson served as a coach for the USA Under-17 Select Festival in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. In April of 2007, Davidson was elected to the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Board of Governors. A former forward for the Saint Michael's, Davidson was a four year letterwinner and voted captain of the 1998-99 team that captured the NCAA Division II National Championship by defeating New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University). It is Saint Michael's only national championship in school history, and Davidson was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team for scoring a goal and an assist in the championship game. As a member of one of the most successful teams to ever wear the Purple Knight uniform, Davidson and his classmates amassed a total of 65 wins over their career. Davidson and his classmates were members of four teams that reached the ECAC Championships during their time. Davidson's playing career also extended to the Southern Professional Hockey League, as he played for both Macon (Ga.) and Pee Dee (S.C.).
Coach Davidson is no stranger to Saint Michael’s hockey success. As a player (pictured above), Davidson captained the Purple Knights team that won the 1999 NCAA Division II National Championship, the only national championship in school history. As a coach, Davidson has gone on to lead Saint Michael’s to two Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

2010-11 Season Outlook Higgins is unfazed by the preseason rankings and is zeroed in on making a splash in the ECAC East. "Not winning an NE-10 championship last year was unacceptable," Higgins said. "Reflecting back on it, it's not even an option in my head to lose. Winning a third NE10 Championship, that's a given. But my sights are set on beating teams that are recognized nationally; teams like Norwich. There's fuel for the fire to win a third NE-10 title, no doubt, and I think that's what we're gonna do. But we also want to be better than that. We want to beat teams like Middlebury and Norwich. We want to beat the best." OFFENSE The Purple Knights offense should have no trouble putting the puck in the net this season with a formidable attack chock full of experienced skaters. Alex Higgins’ on-ice leadership may be his best asset, and his 28 career points makes him twice as deadly. Nick Sheehan has the ability to create countless scoring opportunities, and will surely aid Brady Earle (a 2008-09 NE-10 All Rookie selection) and Reave MacKinnon (a 2008-09 NE-10 All Championship Team pick) in finding the net. Senior Tully LaBelle-Hamer, who has 64 career games to his record, will see plenty of time up front and possesses hockey intangibles that don’t appear in the box score. Saint Michael’s returns five sophomore forwards with superb potential. Josh Geary and Alex Davidson led all first years with 12 points apiece last season. Justin Castagna and Michael Jangro both tallied three points as freshmen and should played enhanced roles this year. Dan Pelletier recorded an assist in his collegiate debut last year and will provide another strong option up front. Six new faces join the Purple Knight offense this season. Sophomore transfer Petr Soustal could make an immediate impact with his superior shooting abilities, and Colby MacDonald, Tim McAuliffe and Rich Rodeschini fill out a quality sophomore offense in their first varsity season. Freshman Ryan Arsenault and Marc-Olivier Sauriol are coming off successful post-graduate years and finish off an intimidating offensive roster.
running, led the team with 27 points and 21 assists last season, and led all defensemen in the NE-10 and ECAC East in scoring. Rigtrup’s vision and ability to elevate the play of those around him will make him the centerpiece of the Saint Michael’s defense. Alongside Rigtrup, sophomore Morgan Bell should find a home in the first line of defense in his first varsity season. Bell’s combination of size and strength will compliment Rigtrup’s established role on the backside. Dan Evarts, another second-year defenseman, has one of the team’s most powerful slapshots, and should see ample time on defense as well as the power play line. Newcomers Nic McIntyre and Kevin Lampron will look to get into the mix quickly as freshman, while first-years Ryan MacDonald and Sam Torney will add depth to an extremely versatile defense. GOALIES The Purple Knights have no shortage of capable goalies, and should see a healthy competition between senior Brendan Rimmer and sophomore Mike Dizgun for the everyday job. Dizgun saw a majority of the time last year as a freshman, registering over 1,000 minutes and ranking in the NE-10’s top four in save percentage and goals against average. Rimmer proved himself in key situations as well, namely by earning the win with 25 saves in last year’s NE-10 Quarterfinal game versus Southern New Hampshire. Senior Brian McWade is chomping at the bit and should see more opportunities between the pipes, and sophomore Eric McGuirk will compete for backup minutes in his first varsity season.
DEFENSE The Saint Michael’s defensive game plan starts with two-time (and reigning) NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year Matt Rigtrup. The senior assistant captain is an NE-10 All Conference First Team selection two years

President John J. Neuhauser Dr. John J. (Jack) Neuhauser, enters his fourth year as the 16th president of Saint Michael’s College in 2010-11. He was named President on August 1, 2007, and was inaugurated on September 29, 2007. Neuhauser spent the two years prior to joining Saint Michael’s as University Professor of Boston College. From 1999 to 2005, he served as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College. From 1977 to 1999, Dr. Neuhauser served as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 part-time. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color.
