The Northeast-10 Conference Currently completing its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont (Saint Michael’s). Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008, the University of New Haven joined the conference, replacing Bryant University, which moved to NCAA Division I, and in 2009, Adelphi University became the league’s 16th member, making the NE-10 the largest Division II conference in the nation. The 2010-11 NE-10 Swimming and Diving Championships will be held Feb. 4-6, 2011, and are hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.

The Coaching Staff Jim Donoghue Head Coach

caring people. It is exciting for me to expand upon the strong swimming tradition here at Saint Michael’s.”

Eileen Hall, an assistant coach with the Saint Michael’s College men’s and women’s swimming and diving program in 2009-10 and longtime club coach, was named the head coach of both programs on September 21, 2010. Hall succeeds Jim Donoghue ’70, who retired in August 2010 after coaching both programs the previous 12 seasons.

“Eileen brings a combination of great knowledge and experience, coupled with a coaching philosophy that demonstrates an excellence match for the Saint Michael’s swimming and diving program,” said Saint Michael’s Director of Athletics Geri Knortz.

“I am looking forward to coaching this strong group of student-athletes,” said Hall, who assisted Donoghue with all aspects of the Saint Michael’s program during the 2009-10 season. “Although I have only known them for a short time, they have proven themselves to be committed swimmers and

Ellie Mack Assistant Coach Ellie Mack (formerly Ellie Hedden) remains with Saint Michael’s for her third year as an assistant coach with the swimming and diving program in 2010-11. A native of Warwick, R.I., Hedden is a 2006 graduate of Saint Michael’s, where she competed in the butterfly for four years under former coach Jim Donoghue. She still holds the program record in the 50-yard butterfly (28.12 seconds). She works as an admission counselor at SMC, representing Rhode Island and parts of Massachusetts.

Laura Matuszak Assistant Coach Laura Matuszak returns to Saint Michael’s for her ninth season as an assistant coach with the swimming and diving program in 201011. Matuszak has been affiliated with the SMC swimming and diving program since the 2002-03 season. She also is a key member of Green Mountain Aquatics, a local club organization that often utilizes the Ross Sports Center Pool.

Hall, who resides in Colchester, Vt., has a wealth of swimming and diving coaching experience at a variety of levels. Since 2005, she has served as the head coach of the Green Mountain Aquatics Senior Group, training athletes age 13-18 years old as they prepare for regional and Junior National competition (the group trains at Saint Michael’s Ross Sports Center Pool). While with GMA, Hall has been the principal on-deck coach at the New England Open Championships, the New England 14-and-Under Championships, and the New England Regionals each of the last two years. Hall also spent 14 months in 2005 and 2006 as the head coach of the Winooski Swim Club, training athletes age 6-18 years old. Prior to moving to Vermont, Hall served three years as the swimming head coach at Two Harbors (Minn.) High School, coaching approximately 30 high school athletes annually. Two Harbors finished in the top-three in its conference every year during Hall’s tenure, and she helped advance two athletes to the Minnesota State High School Championships. Hall also spent three years as the head coach of the Kingston (Tenn.) Clippers Swim Club in the mid-1990’s. A standout amateur swimmer, Hall was an All-American at Glens Falls (N.Y.) High School in 1986, and went on to earn an athletic scholarship at NCAA Division I Bucknell University. Hall held high school state records for her success at Glens Falls until 2002, and was inducted into the Glens Falls High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. Hall has earned her Level II certification through the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), and is also qualified as a coach with the United States Swimming Association. She has attended ASCA clinics in Florida, Massachusetts and New Jersey since 2007.

Cathy Seward Assistant Coach Cathy Seward returns to Saint Michael’s for her 13th season as an assistant coach with the swimming and diving program in 2010-11. Seward, who specializes in diving, has been affiliated with the SMC swimming and diving program since 1998-99, former coach Jim Donoghue’s first season back with both programs.

Season Outlook Men The Saint Michael’s College men’s swimming and diving team returns 11 members of last year’s team, and has depth in several positions in 2010-11. Leading the squad in the pool is junior Dan Healy. One of the best backstrokers in program history, Healy owns the program record in the 200-yard backstroke, and has the potential to challenge the 15-year old program records in the 50- and 100-yard backstrokes. He also swam a leg in all five relay program records. Both of the team’s two senior captains should end their careers on a high note. Aidan Warhall, the program recordholder in the 400-yard individual medley, also is a strong butterfly swimmer. Alex Stott, meanwhile, is the team’s top diver, and has the potential to be one of the top-five divers in the Northeast-10 Conference this season. The freestyle events are a strength for the Purple Knights, particularly the longer races. That’s because sophomore Dustin Bell is back, the program recordholder in the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle events. His brother, junior Austin Bell, also is an aboveaverage freestyle swimmer. In addition to Healy, and Austin Bell, several other juniors return to the program this winter, looking to better their performances from last year. The class includes: Nick Franks (a strong sprint freestyle swimmer who owns part of two relay program records), Chris Hoey (a two-sport athlete), and Michael Sprague (depth in the butterfly and individual medley). Three sophomores (in addition to Dustin Bell) are back with the team in 2010-11. This trio includes: Kyle Esposito (solid in long freestyle races, also competes in backstroke), Christopher Jones (versatile swimmer in three disciplines), and Andrew Marshall (freestyle and individual medley specialist). Seven freshman will make their debut with Saint Michael’s this winter. The list includes: Logan Estes (expected to contribute in three events), Brandon Gurdak (both butterfly and freestyle), Nicholas Lamana (perhaps the first Virginia native in program history), Derick Logan (like Gurdak, a freestyle and butterfly expert), Michel Mendez (depth at breaststroke and IM), Jack Mulderrig (also a breaststroke swimmer), and Zach Scahill (depth behind Stott in diving, and also a multi-discipline swimmer).

Women The Saint Michael’s College men’s swimming and diving team has the depth and experience necessary to make a sizable improvement in 2010-11, and challenge to become one of the top-five programs in the Northeast-10 Conference. Arguably the top swimmer on the team - and of the best in the conference - is junior Eileen Mullowney. Back after missing all of last season due to injury, Mullowney set six individual program records (and was part of two relay program records) as a freshman. Fully recovered, she should be able to return to her dominant form of two seasons ago. The six-member senior class has depth at every position. The captains of the team are: Christine Amoresano (a distance freestyle swimmer who also provides depth at individual medley), Hannah Houley (one of two divers on the team), and Maggie Mulhern (solid in the freestyle and breaststroke). The other three seniors are: Mairead McGonagle (one of the better freestyle swimmers on the team), Kaitlyn O’Donnell (who has made sizable gains in the backstroke), and Catie Watt (also a backstroke and freestyle swimmer). Joining Mullowney in the small but strong junior class are: Kaytlyn Kelley (an above-average backstroke and freestyle swimmer), Kim Marchetti (whose strngth is the butterfly), and Sammy Sweeney (the program recordholder in the 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard individual medley). A handful of sophomores will provide much-needed depth for the Purple Knights. The quintet includes: Heidi Chapman (a multidiscipline swimmer), Emma Hauser (a strong distance freestyle swimmer), Corine McAllister (dangerous in the butterfly and IM), Andrea Munar (solid in the freestyle and breaststroke), and Rebecca Ramrath (joining the team for her first season in 201011). Completing the squad are six freshmen, including: Maddie Craig (an above-average breaststroke and IM swimmer), Caitlin Currier (who makes her debut in diving following a strong gymnastics career), Emily Dieter (who should help in three events), Grace Kahn (believed to be the first student-athlete from Alabama in school history), Loren LaChapelle (butterfly and backstroke), and Julie Mullowney (nearly as strong as older sister Eileen, and dangerous at three different events).

He was named President on August 1, 2007, and was inaugurated on September 29, 2007. Neuhauser spent the two years prior to joining Saint Michael’s as University Professor of Boston College. From 1999 to 2005, he served as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College. From 1977 to 1999, Dr. Neuhauser served as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”
