The Northeast-10 Conference Completing its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont (Saint Michael’s). Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce College, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008, the University of New Haven joined the conference, replacing Bryant University, which moved to NCAA Division I, and in 2009, Adelphi University became the league’s 16th member, making the NE-10 the biggest Division II conference in the nation. The NE-10 softball schedule is comprised of 30 games, with each school playing its conference opponents in a doubleheader. The season is capped off by an eight-team conference tournament at the site of the regular-season champion. The winner of the conference tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional tournament. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.

The Coaching Staff Robyn Newton Head Coach Former University of Vermont standout Robyn Newton, the winningest coach in program history, begins her 11th season as head coach of the Saint Michael’s softball team in 2011. She has guided the Purple Knights to eight of the 10 winningest seasons in program history over the last eight years, including a programrecord 26-14 campaign in 2007. Newton led the Purple Knights to a 25-16 season in 2005. Picked to finish ninth in the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Newton’s squad finished in fourth place. SMC earned a berth in the highly-competitive NE-10 playoffs for the first time in program history, finishing in third place following an upset victory of nationally-ranked Le Moyne. The team also broke a 25-year old record by recording seven straight wins during the regular season. Newton also had a record-setting season in 2004. She guided the Purple Knights to a 21-17 record, the program's first winning season since 1981, and in the process shattered the program record for victories in a season (which was previously nine, in 2003 and 1979). Newton also led the 2004 Purple Knights to a 15-13 record in the

Ralph Halbach Assistant Coach Ralph Halbach returns to the Purple Knights’ coaching staff for his 16th season in 2010. Halbach works primary with the pitching staff, but helps out with all areas of the program, including recruiting. Halbach has been a pitching coach in Vermont for more than 16 years. A native of Saint Anna, Wis., Halbach spent nine years in the Air Force and was stationed at the Saint Albans Radar site for nearly six years. Halbach has spent most of his life around the game of softball, playing for local leagues in Wisconsin, Air Force teams, and a team from Grand Rapids, Minn. His knowledge and experience are a critical asset to the pitching staff for the Purple Knights. Halbach has worked for IBM as a lab technician since leaving the service more than 25 years ago. In January of 2005, Halbach was recognized for his contributions to softball throughout the state by being inducted into the Vermont Expos/Banknorth Sports Community Hall of Fame. Halbach’s sense of humor and passion for the game of softball have positively impacted all of the players that he has coached at Saint Michael’s College.

NE-10, just missing out on the squad's first-ever postseason berth. For her efforts, Newton was named the 2004 NE-10 Softball Coach of the Year, as she helped the Purple Knights finish eighth in the conference following a 14th-place finish in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. In 10 years at Saint Michael’s, Newton has compiled a career record of 139-238-1 (.369), including 90-71 (.559) in the four-year span from 2004-2007. She has coached softball at a variety of levels, including assistant coach at the University of Vermont from 1995-99. During the 2000 season she was the head softball coach at Trinity College of Vermont, while also holding the position of Interim Athletic Director. Before her coaching days, she was a star player on the Vermont softball team from 1991-95. She was a four-year starting first baseman and a co-captain, while also being named the Sally Guerette Player of the Year for Vermont in 1994. In 138 career games, Newton is tied for ninth in UVM history with 51 runs batted in, and her 42 hits and 23 RBI in 1994 are the eighth-best and fourth-best single-season marks at UVM, respectively. Newton earned her B.A. in Physical Education K-12 from Vermont. She earned her Master’s degree in Education from Southern New Hampshire University. Newton has taught Physical Education full-time at Vergennes Union Elementary School for the past 13 years.

Meg Currier Assistant Coach Meg Currier, one of the greatest first basemen and hitters in program history, remains with the Purple Knights for her fourth season as a volunteer assistant coach in 2010. Currier finished her four-year career in 2007, and she is currently in the top-five in program history in hits (116), doubles (17), home runs (10), runs (50) and runs batted in (62). She helped lead the Purple Knights to the greatest four-year run in program history, as Saint Michael’s went 90-71 during her career. Currier had one of the greatest offensive seasons in program history as a senior in 2007, as she helped lead Saint Michael’s to a program-record 26-14 season. She belted a career-best six home runs and added a team-high 24 runs batted in, leading the Purple Knights to a 16-12 conference record. She also made just one error in 195 chances, for a .995 fielding percentage. Currier currently works as a senior technical specialist and consumer loan support officer at Chittenden Bank in Burlington.

Season Outlook The 2011 Season The Saint Michael’s College softball team aims to defy the odds in 2011 and exceed expectations of a 16th-place Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll selection. The Purple Knights took their lumps last year on their way to just four conference wins and the first 30-loss season in eight years, but a young and energized roster with improved depth will give Saint Michael’s a chance to make some noise in the NE-10 in 2011. Head coach Robyn Newton returns for her 11th season accompanied by assistant coaches Ralph Halbach and Meg Currier. The coaching staff will rely upon its 10 returns as well as seven newcomers to lead Saint Michael’s to success.

Outfielders The outfield will rely on many new faces this season, but senior captain Meghan Colitti will be a staple in left field with her irreplacable hitting ability. Frank will assume a corner position when not pitching, and freshman Brittany Regis will patrol center field with her blazing speed and outstanding defense. Lemnah and freshman Brittany Cantore will fill in when Frank is on the mound, and junior Tori Buck, sophomore Brittany Cantore and freshman Grace Bonaiuto will battle for time in the outfield. Schedule

Pitchers Sophomore Stephanie Frank wasted no time last season establishing herself as the ace of the staff, and will resume that role this year. Frank struck out 77 batters and was second on the team in batting as a freshman, and will see time in the outfield when not pitching. Freshman Laura McCormack will see immediate time as a starting pitcher, and sophomore Lauren Mercik and first-years Lea Gipson and Bethany Falls will provide the deepest bullpen in recent program history.

The Purple Knights kick off the 2011 season with 10 games in Clermont, Fla. The games will be played at Hancock Park and the National Training Center, pitting Saint Michael’s against regional opponents such as Bridgeport, Bentley and nationallyranked Molloy. Saint Michael’s returns North for a 30-game NE-10 schedule, beginning with a home doubleheader against Merrimack on Mar. 29.

Infielders The infield will be anchored by a strong group of veterans and returners, including senior captains Kate Condon and Kelly Rose Losi. Condon will command first base and provide pop in the batting order, and Losi will make Sophomore Stephanie Frank is the team’s top proper use of her valuable leadership as she makes the move from shortstop returning hitter and will be the ace of the pitching staff again in 2011. Frank moved into the program’s to catcher. top five all-time in strikeouts after just one season. Sophomore Lindsay Houston showed promise last year with a .400 batting average in 22 games and earned the starting second base spot for this season. Freshmen Greer Lemnah and Amanda Brigante will compete for time at second base as well. On the left side, Falls had an impressive fall season and should step in immediately as the starting shortstop. Lemnah should see time at short as well when Falls pitches. Sophomore Carleen McLaughlin, the team’s most improved returner, will man the hot corner for the second year in a row, while junior Olivia LeClerc will see time as a backup to McLaughlin.

President Jack Neuhauser John J. (Jack) Neuhauser, University Professor, Boston College, began his tenure as the 16th president of Saint Michael’s College, a liberal arts residential Catholic college located in the Burlington area of Vermont, on August 1, 2007. He was inaugurated on September 29, 2007. Professor Neuhauser served from 1999 to 2005 as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, and from 1977 to 1999 as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. Dr. Neuhauser, a computer scientist, will begin his position as president of Saint Michael’s College on July 1, 2007. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

17

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 part-time. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color. As dean of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Professor Neuhauser led a redesign of the MBA program to promote socially responsible, ethical management and to offer several joint degree programs: MBA-MSA, MBAJD and MBA-Ph.D. He is also credited with raising $20 million on his own for the Carroll School. A native of New York City, Dr. Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964, a master’s in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and a doctorate in operations research and statistics: mathematics, also from Rensselaer, in 1968. Professor Neuhauser is described “as an academic leader who strives for excellence first,” and as a person who is “very comfortable providing leadership within the framework of a strong Catholic institution.” Jack Neuhauser has been a member of the Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees since 2001. He is the father of three grown children. He has completed the Boston Marathon seven times.

Athletic Administration Geri Knortz, Ed.D. Athletics Director On May 7, 1997, Geraldine S. Knortz, Ed.D., became the fifth athletics director in the College’s 93-year history, and the first woman to ever hold the position. “We were looking for someone with the leadership abilities to carry Saint Michael's into the 21st century, with concern for all students,” then-college president Marc A. vanderHeyden said. “I am convinced we have found the right person in Geri Knortz.” While at Saint Michael's, Knortz has guided the successful transition of the women’s ice hockey program to varsity status and the men’s ice hockey program’s move to the ECAC East Conference. Knortz has also been instrumental in the addition of numerous fulltime coaching positions, improvements to coaches offices, the renovation of the Ross Sports Center gymnasium floor in 2001, and the construction of the Duffy Artificial Turf Field in 2005. Under her leadership, notable team successes include the field hockey team’s semifinal finish at the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Championship, the men’'s basketball “Sweet Sixteen” appearance in 2001, and the crowning of the men’s hockey team as the 1999 NCAA Division II Champions. In 2007-08 and 2008-09, the women’s tennis team earned the program’s first two appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, and the men’s ice hockey team was crowned Northeast-10 Conference Tournament champions the last two years. Knortz has been a member of many college committees at Saint Michael's including: strategic planning, athletic advisory, technology steering, administrative council, and numerous search committees. At the national level, she currently serves on the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics, and is past chair of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee and the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee for the Northeast District. She is also active with the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. Knortz prepared well for her opportunity at Saint Michael's during a very successful 15 year career at Hamilton College, where she held the position of associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator. She was also a professor of physical education (tenured 1987), and coached two varsity sports: volleyball and softball. She is a 1974 graduate (magna cum laude) of the State University of New York at Cortland, where she earned a bachelor of science in physical education and mathematics. She went on to earn her master of science in education at Northern Illinois University in 1978, and a master of science in administration at Saint Michael's in 2005.

Chris Kenny Associate Athletics Director Now in his third decade as a college employee, Chris Kenny - the College’s associate athletic director - is primarily responsible for NCAA compliance, marketing, development, and sport administration. Kenny is a product of Saint Michael’s, earning a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and master of science degree in administration and management at the College. After a brief stint as public relations director in the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies minor league systems following graduation, he returned to his alma mater to be the College’s sports information direc-

Zaf Bludevich Senior Associate Athletics Director A member of the athletic department since 1975, Zaf Bludevich has been involved in nearly every aspect of Saint Michael’s athletics since his arrival more than three decades ago. Bludevich has served as associate athletic director, head athletics trainer, summer camp director, intramural director and has coached several sports. From 1975 to 2003, he served as the College’s head athletic trainer, and in 2004 was promoted to his current title. A 1993 Saint Michael’s Hall of Fame inductee, Bludevich has served on numerous committees and received several awards for his tireless efforts and dedication to Purple Knights athletics. He has held the positions of treasurer and secretary on the Vermont Association of Athletic Trainers and been a member of the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules and Women’s Championship committees and ECAC Cross Country and Track Committee. Bludevich’s longest tenure in a coaching position was 16 years with the cross country program, though he split his time between the men’s (1980-83, 1990-97) and women’s (1980-87) squads. In 1984 and 1985, his women’s squad won the Mideast Conference title. He was the co-head coach of the men’s swimming and diving team during its first four seasons of existence (1974-78).
