The Northeast-10 Conference Currently in its fourth decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont (Saint Michael’s). Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008-09, the University of New Haven replaced Bryant University, which moved up to NCAA Division I, and in 2009-10, Adelphi University became the conference’s 16th member, tied for the most in Division II. The NE-10 women’s lacrosse conference schedule consists of 12 games, with each conference school playing the other once (three NE-10 members do not field women’s lacrosse programs: UMass Lowell, Pace and Saint Rose. Le Moyne, meanwhile, will play its first season as an NE-10 member in 2011 after moving from NCAA Division I). The season is capped off by a six-team NE-10 Tournament in May. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.

Coach Ashley Hughes Ashley Hughes Head Coach First Season Ashley Hughes, the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Allegheny College women’s lacrosse program, was named the head coach of the Saint Michael’s College women’s lacrosse program, it was announced on July 7. Hughes, the ninth head coach in the 29-year history of the program, replaces Carla Hesler, who remains with Saint Michael’s in a full-time capacity as head coach of the field hockey program, plus additional athletic department operational duties. “I am thrilled that Ashley is joining the Saint Michael’s athletic department as women’s lacrosse head coach,” said Saint Michael’s Director of Athletics Geri Knortz. “Her playing and collegiate coaching experiences will be a valuable addition to our women’s lacrosse program.”

Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., during the 2008-09 academic year. A native of Wexford, Pa., Hughes was a standout student-athlete at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., where she graduated in 2008 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. She played both lacrosse and soccer at Allegheny, and was a four-year starter for both programs. In lacrosse, she is the program’s all-time leader with 125 career goals, 54 career assists, and 179 career points. She was a three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference First Team selection (and Second Team pick the other season), and a two-time NCAC All-Tournament Team pick. A two-year team captain, Hughes also earned All-West Region honors from the International Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association twice. In soccer, Hughes led the Gators in goals scored for two consecutive seasons, and was an NCAA honorable mention selection as a junior. Hughes has experience working as a counselor at the week-long Saint Michael’s girl’s lacrosse camp held last month, and also worked at a similar camp at Allegheny twice while an undergraduate.

“I would like to thank Geri Knortz and the rest of the search committee for this wonderful opportunity,” said Hughes. “I am excited to build upon the traditions of the women’s lacrosse program and aspire to become a consistent competitor within the Northeast-10 Conference. I look forward to joining the Saint Michael’s community and aiding in the academic and athletic success of the Purple Knights.” Hughes spent the 2009-10 academic year as an assistant coach for both the women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer programs at Norwich University in Northfield, Vt. She assisted the head coach of both programs with all daily operations, and helped the women’s lacrosse team win the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship, qualifying the team for the NCAA Division III Tournament. Hughes also served as a women’s lacrosse assistant coach at

2011 Season Outlook The Saint Michael’s College women’s lacrosse team begins a new era in 2011. After a program-record 10 seasons at the helm of the program, Carla Hesler stepped down as head coach last summer, and in her place is Ashley Hughes, who takes over a young team with promising players at both ends of the field.

Another member of the starting lineup is Meghan Hayes. A consistent defender, Hayes recorded at least one ground ball in every game she played last spring, and is also effective in causing turnovers and recording draw controls. In the midfield, Jackie O’Leary made contributions in her first season with the team last year, and should receive valuable minutes off the bench this spring. In goal, Sandy Palumbo emerged as the team’s primary netminder in 2010, and looks to hold down the position again in 2011. She placed among the NE-10’s top-10 in goals against average, save percentage and saves per game last spring, while playing more than 740 minutes. And back with the team after a year’s absence is Sarah Cino, the team’s third-string goalie behind Palumbo and McLaughlin.

Seniors Six seniors will look to end their careers with a Northeast-10 Conference Tournament appearance in 2011. On offense, Joan Colloton emerged as a solid weapon last season. After going scoreless her first two seasons, Colloton tallied 10 goals and six assists as a junior last year, and could top those totals in 2011. In the midfield, a trio of players will be expected to lead the Purple Knights at both ends of the field. President Dr. John J. Neuhauser Dr. John J. (Jack) Neuhauser enters his fourth year as the 16th President of Saint Michael’s College in 2010-11. He was named President on August 1, 2007, and was inaugurated on September 29, 2007. Neuhauser spent the two years prior to joining Saint Michael’s as University Professor of Boston College. From 1999 to 2005, he served as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College. From 1977 to 1999, Dr. Neuhauser served as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

www.smcathletics.com

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 part-time. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color. As dean of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Professor Neuhauser led a redesign of the MBA program to promote socially responsible, ethical management and to offer several joint degree programs: MBA-MSA, MBAJD and MBA-Ph.D. He is also credited with raising $20 million on his own for the Carroll School. A native of New York City, Dr. Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964, a master’s in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and a doctorate in operations research and statistics: mathematics, also from Rensselaer, in 1968. Professor Neuhauser is described “as an academic leader who strives for excellence first,” and as a person who is “very comfortable providing leadership within the framework of a strong Catholic institution.” Jack Neuhauser has been a member of the Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees since 2001. He is the father of three grown children. He has completed the Boston Marathon seven times.
