The Coaching Staff Paul Morgan Head Coach Paul Morgan, an Essex Junction native and former standout shortstop at Williams College, enters his third season as Head Coach of the Saint Michael's College varsity baseball program in 2011. Morgan, who was named the 19th head coach in the program's 98-year history on August 11, 2008, is only the third head coach since the program was reinstituted as a varsity sport in 1990. He led the Purple Knights to a 15-19 season in his first year in 2009, the most wins by a first-year head coach in program history, and just two wins shy of tying the program record. Only one coach in program history has won more games in his first two seasons (21) than Morgan. "We are excited to have Paul join the Saint Michael's community as head baseball coach," said Director of Athletics Geri Knortz. "His experiences as a student-athlete and coach, plus his local connections, make him a very good fit for this opportunity." Morgan, who completed his tenure as an assistant coach with the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in August of 2008, spent the 2007-08 academic year as a mathematics teacher at The Salisbury (Conn.) School. While at Salisbury, Morgan served as the prep school's assistant baseball coach, helping the Crimson Knights compile a perfect 20-0 season in the spring of 2008. He also helped mentor Salisbury great Anthony Hewitt, a first-round draft choice by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Morgan had a stellar four-year career as the starting shortstop at Williams College. As a senior captain, Morgan led the Ephs to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) West and NESCAC Tournament titles, and to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in six seasons. He was twice named All-NESCAC and All-New England by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association, and was selected to the NCAA Division III New England Regional All-Tournament Team as a senior. Over his career, Morgan batted .361 with 208 hits, 129 runs batted in, and 119 runs scored. For three summers as an undergraduate, Morgan played in the NECBL with the North Adams SteepleCats, and one summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League. He also served as an assistant coach for the Essex American Legion baseball team in 2008, the Knights of Columbus-South Burlington squad in 2009, and the Colchester Cannons program in 2010.

Tony Bonvechio Strength & Conditioning Coach Tony Bonvechio '10, a standout baseball player at Saint Michael's College, was named the College's sports information intern for the 2010-11 school year, it was announced on June 21. Bonvechio will serve as the baseball team's strength and conditioning coach, while also working with the hitters and catchers. He will design and implement the squad's lifting, speed and conditioning programs. Bonvechio graduated from Saint Michael's in May of 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and mass communications, compiling a cumulative 3.2 Grade Point Average. While at Saint Michael's, Bonvechio was a two-year member of the Purple Knights' baseball team. In 2010, Bonvechio emerged as the squad's top offensive threat, as he led the Purple Knights with three home runs and a .472 slugging percentage, and was second on the team with 20 runs batted in and eight doubles. He also played errorless baseball while serving as the team's primary catcher, handling all 131 chances flawlessly. Bonvechio also was a member of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team before transferring to Saint Michael's prior to his junior year, and was named a Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll Bronze Scholar in 2006-07, signifying academic excellence. Bonvechio is working toward obtaining his National Strength and Conditioning Association certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and resides in Colchester, Vt.

Ed Poland Assistant Coach Ed Poland returns with Coach Morgan for his third year as an assistant coach with the Saint Michael's College baseball program in 2011. He helped the Purple Knights compile a 15-19 record in his first year with the program in 2009, and has helped Saint Michael's earn 21 victories in his first two seasons with the program. Poland has been involved with coaching for more than 20 years in several capacities. Most recently, he spent five years as the head coach of the Essex (Vt.) High School junior varsity baseball team, including an undefeated season in 2008. He also served 12 years as the head coach of the Essex Junction Little League program, and has also served as a head and assistant football coach at various levels. His overall record as a head coach stands at 209-54 (a .795 winning percentage). As an athlete, Poland was a four-year standout third baseman at Essex High School, and played eight years of semi-professional baseball for the Burlington Expos. Poland, who has spent the last nine years working in the College's physical plant department, has been a member of the Vermont Baseball Coaches' Association for the last 25 years. He also has been a member of the World Baseball Coaches' Association, and has served on the Board of Directors for the Essex Junction Little League. He currently is enrolled in the Johnson State College External Degree Program, completing his degree in education, and resides in Essex Junction.

Josh Jacobs Hitting Coach

Josh Jacobs, a high school teammate of head coach Paul Morgan and four-year collegiate standout, returns with Morgan for his third year as an assistant baseball coach with Saint Michael's in 2011. He helped lead the Purple Knights to a 15-19 season in his first year with the program in 2009, and the program has won 21 games since Jacobs has been involved. Jacobs enjoyed much success as a third baseman at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass., where he graduated in 2007. While at WNEC, Jacobs and the Golden Bears won three Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championships and made three NCAA Division III Tournaments. The squad also had a winning season in each of his four years, including three straight 30-win seasons, and a program-record 35 wins as a junior in 2006. WNEC went 127-46 during Jacobs' fouryear career. A native of Essex Junction, Vt., Jacobs was a high school teammate of Morgan's at Essex High School, where he graduated in 2003.

Matt Rodovick Pitching Coach

Matt Rodovick, a standout collegiate pitcher, joins the Saint Michael's College baseball staff for his first year as a pitching coach in 2010-11. Rodovick starred at Drury High School in North Adams, Mass. While at Drury, Rodovick won two Western Massachusetts championships, threw two no-hitters, and set his school's record for best earned run average in a career. He was also named the Division II State Most Valuable Player as a junior in 2000. Rodovick then played two years at the University of Massachusetts Amherst before transferring to Springfield College, where he graduated in 2006. While in college, he played summer baseball with Coach Morgan for the North Adams Steeplecats of the prestigious New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). His coaching career began after graduation, as Rodovick served two years as the pitching coach at his high school alma mater. Rodovick, who resides in Burlington, currently works at the Howard Center.

Spring Break 2011 For the fifth straight season, the Saint Michael’s College baseball team will open its season in sunny Florida. The 2011 Purple Knights will take part in the Palm Beach Challenge for the second time, playing regional powers UMass-Lowell, Saint Thomas Aquinas and Merrimack. Among the 11 games that Saint Michael’s is scheduled to play in Florida are evening contests at Nova Southeastern University and Palm Beach Atlantic. In 2008 and 2009, Saint Michael’s played in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, and in 2007, the Purple Knights played in the Port Charlotte (Fla.) Invitational.. Last season, senior captain Matt Beaulieu (left) hit .375 in Florida, including an 8-for-11 span in three games. As a sophomore, Patrick Lawler (right) hit .308 in the Sunshine State, including a 2-for-2 performance with a double against Nova Southeastern.

2010 Year in Review The second season under head coach Paul Morgan felt short of expectations, with the team winning just six games. Moments of brilliance shone through, but arguably the toughest schedule in program history took its toll on the Purple Knights. News of rejoining the Northeast-10 Conference for the 2012 season has given extra fuel for the fire this season, and 2010 will serve as a learning experience as Saint Michael's baseball moves into the future. A 1-4 start in Florida would be a sign of things to come, as the Purple Knights endured a 10-game losing skid before getting win number two in the first half of a double-header with SUNY Canton. Saint Michael's went on to pick up wins against in-state rivals Lyndon State, Castleton and Norwich, including a thrilling 16-inning victory at Lyndon that is believed to be the longest game in the program's 97-year history. Several seniors had strong final seasons for the Purple Knights. Matt Beaulieu (top left) led the squad in hitting (.336) for the second-straight year, and had team-bests with 40 hits and 19 walks. Infielder Tim Pilczak (left) became the program's all-time leader with 27 career doubles, and Tony Bonvechio (bottom left) emerged as the everyday catcher and was the team's top offensive producer with eight doubles, three home runs, 20 RBIs and a team-leading .472 slugging percentage. Jeff McLaughlin (bottom, middle left) went on a tear in the second half of the season, starting the last 11 games and batting .396 (19-for-48) in that span.. Starting pitchers Mike Robert (bottom, middle right) and Kevin Wickles (bottom right) combined for 17 appearances and 66 innings of work. The Purple Knights ended the season with a gutsy, four-run ninth inning rally that fell just short at Plattsburgh. The 11-10 loss in the nightcap of a double-header saw multiple-hit performances for Beaulieu, Bonvechio and McLaughlin in their final college game.

The Tarrant Recreation Center and Ross Sports Center form the epicenter for athletic and recreational activities on campus. The College offers 21 intercollegiate sports that compete at the NCAA Division II level with all but four teams participating in the highly competitive Northeast-10 Conference, the second-largest Division II conference in the nation. For students who are looking for something slightly less competitive, there is a wide variety of club and intramural sports such as rugby, basketball, softball and even table tennis. President John J. Neuhauser Dr. John J. (Jack) Neuhauser, enters his fourth year as the 16th president of Saint Michael’s College in 2010-11. He was named President on August 1, 2007, and was inaugurated on September 29, 2007. Neuhauser spent the two years prior to joining Saint Michael’s as University Professor of Boston College. From 1999 to 2005, he served as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College. From 1977 to 1999, Dr. Neuhauser served as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 part-time. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color. As dean of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Professor Neuhauser led a redesign of the MBA program to promote socially responsible, ethical management and to offer several joint degree programs: MBA-MSA, MBAJD and MBA-Ph.D. He is also credited with raising $20 million on his own for the Carroll School. A native of New York City, Dr. Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964, a master’s in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and a doctorate in operations research and statistics: mathematics, also from Rensselaer, in 1968. Professor Neuhauser is described “as an academic leader who strives for excellence first,” and as a person who is “very comfortable providing leadership within the framework of a strong Catholic institution.” Jack Neuhauser has been a member of the Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees since 2001. He is the father of three grown children. He has completed the Boston Marathon seven times.

Athletic Administration Geri Knortz, Ed.D. M’05 Athletics Director On May 7, 1997, Geraldine S. Knortz, Ed.D., became the fifth athletics director in the College’s 93-year history, and the first woman to ever hold the position. “We were looking for someone with the leadership abilities to carry Saint Michael's into the 21st century, with concern for all students,” then-college president Marc A. vanderHeyden said. “I am convinced we have found the right person in Geri Knortz.” While at Saint Michael's, Knortz has guided the successful transition of the women’s ice hockey program to varsity status and the men’s ice hockey program’s move to the ECAC East Conference. Knortz has also been instrumental in the addition of numerous fulltime coaching positions, improvements to coaches offices, the renovation of the Ross Sports Center gymnasium floor in 2001, and the construction of the Duffy Artificial Turf Field in 2005. Under her leadership, notable team successes include the field hockey team’s semifinal finish at the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Championship, the men’'s basketball “Sweet Sixteen” appearance in 2001, and the crowning of the men’s hockey team as the 1999 NCAA Division II Champions. The last three years, the women’s tennis team earned the program’s first three appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, and the men’s ice hockey team was crowned Northeast10 Conference Tournament champions twice in the last three years. Knortz has been a member of many college committees at Saint Michael's including: strategic planning, athletic advisory, technology steering, administrative council, and numerous search committees. At the national level, she currently serves on the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics, and is past chair of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee and the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee for the Northeast District. She is also active with the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. Knortz prepared well for her opportunity at Saint Michael's during a very successful 15 year career at Hamilton College, where she held the position of associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator. She was also a professor of physical education (tenured 1987), and coached two varsity sports: volleyball and softball. She is a 1974 graduate (magna cum laude) of the State University of New York at Cortland, where she earned a bachelor of science in physical education and mathematics. She went on to earn her master of science in education at Northern Illinois University in 1978, and a master of science in administration at Saint Michael's in 2005.

Chris Kenny Associate Athletics Director Now in his third decade as a college employee, Chris Kenny - the College’s associate athletic director - is primarily responsible for NCAA compliance, marketing, development, and sport administration. Kenny is a product of Saint Michael’s, earning a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and master of science degree in administration and management at the College. After a brief stint as public relations director in the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies minor league systems following graduation, he returned to his alma mater to be the College’s sports information director, a position he held for eight years.

Zaf Bludevich Senior Associate Athletics Director A member of the athletic department since 1975, Zaf Bludevich has been involved in nearly every aspect of Saint Michael’s athletics since his arrival more than three decades ago. Bludevich has served as associate athletic director, head athletics trainer, summer camp director, intramural director and has coached several sports. From 1975 to 2003, he served as the College’s head athletic trainer, and in 2004 was promoted to his current title. A 1993 Saint Michael’s Hall of Fame inductee, Bludevich has served on numerous committees and received several awards for his tireless efforts and dedication to Purple Knights athletics. He has held the positions of treasurer and secretary on the Vermont Association of Athletic Trainers and been a member of the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules and Women’s Championship committees and ECAC Cross Country and Track Committee. Bludevich’s longest tenure in a coaching position was 16 years with the cross country program, though he split his time between the men’s (1980-83, 1990-97) and women’s (1980-87) squads. In 1984 and 1985, his women’s squad won the Mideast Conference title. He was the co-head coach of the men’s swimming and diving team during its first four seasons of existence (1974-78). In 1975, he coached the school’s field hockey team, and in 1990 he assisted Lou DiMasi’s men’s lacrosse team. A 1974 graduate of Norwich University (and 2004 Norwich Hall of Fame inductee), where he received his bachelor’s degree in physical education, he earned his master’s in education/athletic training in 1975. In 1991, he received a degree in physical therapy from the University of Vermont. Following his term as the school’s SID, he served as Director of Athletic External Affairs for two years, before being promoted first to Assistant, then Associate Athletic Director. A well-known face around campus, Kenny is a member of several committees, both on campus and in the outer realm of college athletics. A former member of the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Committee, he is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators, and the National Association of Athletics Compliance Coordinators. He is also a member of Leadership Champlain’s Class of 2005. A division of the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Champlain is a prestigious year-long program focused on developing professional leadership and awareness of community issues facing Vermont. On campus, he is a member of the College’s Athletic Task Force, Athletic Advisory Council, and Judicial Review Board, and chairs the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. Kenny is also an active volunteer in and outside the Burlington community. He serves on the Vermont State Sports Council, is a member of the board of directors for Big Apple Basketball (a non-profit corporation committed to helping New York City kids achieve their dream of a college education), and volunteers for Vermont’s Camp TaKum-Ta (a residential summer camp for children with cancer) having served the camp as a member of its board of directors for 10 years. He is also the Executive Director of the Robert J. Kenny Memorial Golf Tournament, which endows camping scholarships at the Clara Barton Camp for girls with diabetes in memory of his late father, and is a member of the Barton Center’s “Friends of Barton.”

Sports Medicine Jim Murdock Head Athletic Trainer Jim Murdock, an athletic trainer with nearly 30 years of collegiate experience, enters his second year as Saint Michael’s head athletic trainer in 2010-11. Murdock joins Saint Michael’s after spending 11 years as an athletic trainer at the University of Vermont, including five years as head athletic trainer and assistant director of the Center for Health and Wellbeing. As head athletic trainer, he worked with all 27 of UVM’s NCAA Division I varsity sports programs, and was the supervisor for seven full-time staff, two part-time staff, several student athletic trainers, and three athletic medi- The Athletic Training Room is located on the first floor of the Ross Sports Center, across from the gym. cine facilities. Prior to his time at UVM, Murdock was the director of sports medicine/head athletic trainer and assistant athletics director at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J., from 1986-98. While at Monmouth, he developed a drug-education course and program for student-athletes, and also taught a variety of courses related to athletic training, health and fitness, and first aid safety. Murdock is a 1980 graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor of science degree in physical education/athletic training, and earned his masters of education in sports medicine/athletic training from the University of Virginia in 1991. He also has served a six-year stint (1980-86) as an assistant athletic trainer and head baseball coach at Washington & Lee University, an NCAA Division III institution in Lexington, Va. Jessica Moore Athletic Trainer Jessica Moore enters her fifth season as athletic trainer at Saint Michael’s in 2010-11. She assists in all of the College’s 21 varsity sports, and works primarily with the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams during the winter. Moore received her bachelor’s degree from Castleton State College in 2002, earning her degree in sports medicine. While at Castleton, she was a senior athletic training student with men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball and women’s soccer. After graduating from Castleton, Moore was a graduate assistant at Old Dominion University, working primarily with the women's basketball team, which hosted the NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional Tournament in 2006. She received her master's degree in education from Old Dominion in 2006.

Whitney Grennon Athletic Medicine Intern Whitney Grennon joins Saint Michael's for her first year as the athletic medicine intern in 2010-11. She will assist with the health care of the College's 21 NCAA Division II intercollegiate varsity sports programs. Grennon graduated summa cum laude from Norwich University in May with a bachelor of science degree in sports medicine/athletic training, and minors in biology, health-nutrition, and coaching. While at Norwich, she worked in the athletic training room for four years, where she actively assisted the College's athletic training staff. Grennon also was a four-year standout for the Norwich softball team, and three-year team captain. Grennon also served two years as president of the College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Sports Medicine Seth Cole ’01 Sports Information Director Seth Cole, a native of Blue Hill, Maine, returns for his eighth year as sports information director for Saint Michael’s in 2010-11. He handles all publicity and media relations efforts for the College’s 21 varsity sports, and is the chair of the Northeast-10 Conference Sports Information Directors. He also served as the College’s baseball coach from 2006-08. Cole, a 2001 graduate of Saint Michael’s with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, returns following a 12-month stint with USA Hockey in Colorado Springs, Colo. He first served USA Hockey as The Brian Fishman Intern before being hired full-time as coordinator of media and public relations. Prior to joining USA Hockey, Cole spent the 2001-02 school year as an Asa S. Bushnell intern with the Eastern College Athletic Conference in Centerville, Mass. As an undergraduate, Cole served internships with the Saint Michael’s sports information office and with the sports department of the Burlington Free Press. In addition, he also served as sports editor of The Defender, Saint Michael’s award-winning student newspaper. A four-year starter at second base for the Purple Knights’ varsity baseball team, Cole won the George “Doc” Jacobs Award, given annually to a student who makes an outstanding contribution to the athletic department at Saint Michael’s.

Meggan Dulude ’07 Coordinator of Athletic Facilities & Student Workers Meggan Dulude was named the College’s full-time Coordinator of Athletic Facilities & Student Workers on June 24, 2010. She is responsible for the coordination of all athletics facilities and field requests, among other tasks. Dulude (formerly Meggan Roberge) was a standout pitcher for the Saint Michael’s softball team from 2004-07, and holds nearly every pitching record in program history.

James Franklin Tickets Manager and Events Supervisor James Franklin was named the head coach of men’s soccer, tickets manager, and events supervisor at Saint Michael’s College in April of 2008. Franklin has 12 years of collegiate coaching experience, most recently as an assistant coach for the University of Vermont’s women’s program in 2006 and 2007. Prior to joining UVM, Franklin was the men’s soccer head coach at Norwich from 2003-06. He played collegiate soccer at nearby Champlain College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.

Jon Milazzo Equipment and Events Manager Jon Milazzo, a native of Richmond, Vt., has been the Purple Knights’ equipment and events manager since 1998. He is in charge of the purchasing and distribution of all apparel and equipment for the College’s 21 varsity programs. In addition, Milazzo is responsible for the game management of each home athletic event and the operation of the college’s concession stand for home basketball games. He also oversees a student work study staff of 15. Milazzo is a graduate of the University of Hartford. Before arriving at Saint Michael’s, he was an athletic equipment manager at the University of Vermont for 17 years.

Mary Moreau Office Coordinator Mary Moreau is in her 16th year as the athletic department’s office coordinator. She is responsible for coordinating travel for every team and makes all necessary arrangements for home and away contests, including scheduling officials and transportation. Along with Stacey Peet, she helps manage the day-to-day operations of the athletic department.

Stacey Peet Administrative Assistant Stacey Peet is in her 13th year as administrative assistant to the athletic department. She has several duties, including managing the day-to-day operations of the department. She also acts as the athletic department’s business manager. Peet, a well-known face on campus, is often seen singing the national anthem at many of the men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and men’s ice hockey home games.

Tony Bonvechio ’10 Sports Information Intern Tony Bonvechio ’10 joins Saint Michael’s in the role of sports information intern for the 2010-11 academic year. He will assist with all public and media relations facets for the College’s 21 varsity sports programs. Bonvechio, a journalism and mass communications major with a 3.2 GPA, played baseball at Saint Michael’s for two years (and at Southern New Hampshire University for one season). As a senior in 2010, he led the Purple Knights with three home runs and a .472 slugging percentage while serving as the squad’s primary catcher.

Facilities Since 1990, Doc Jacobs Field (left) has been home to Saint Michael’s baseball team, one of the finest playing surfaces in New England. The field is part of the Doc Jacobs Complex, which is also home to the Purple Knights’ soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and softball teams. The centerpiece of the facility is the Christopher Duffy Artificial Turf Field, a synthetic turf playing surface dedicated in October of 2005. The field, used by lacrosse, soccer and field hockey, was made possible due to a generous lead gift by John and Kathleen Duffy, parents of Kevin Duffy ’03, in honor of Kevin’s older brother, Christopher, who died during the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.

The Saint Michael’s basketball teams and women’s volleyball team play in the Ross Sports Center, which was renovated in the summer of 2001. A new state-of-theart floor was put down to replace the previous one that existed since the building opened in 1973. The gym has been named “The Taj Mahal of the Northeast-10 Conference”, and is widely regarded as one of the finest facilities in the Northeast.

The Tarrant Recreation Center, named after the parents of former basketball All-American Rich Tarrant ’65, offers students indoor basketball, tennis, racquetball and squash courts. It also has a 1/8 mile suspended indoor track, and is where the baseball team practices during the winter.

The Ross Sports Center pool is home to the Purple Knights swimming and diving teams. The 25-yard, sixlane pool is also the home of Green Mountain Aquatics.
