The Northeast-10 Conference Currently in its fourth decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont (Saint Michael’s). Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008-09, the University of New Haven replaced Bryant University, which moved up to NCAA Division I, and in 2009-10, Adelphi University became the conference’s 16th member, tied for the most in Division II. The NE-10 men’s lacrosse conference schedule consists of 10 games, with each conference school playing the other once (five NE10 members do not field men’s lacrosse programs: UMass Lowell, New Haven, Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut and Stonehill). The season is capped off by a six-team NE-10 Tournament in May. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.

Head Coach Paul Schimoler Paul Schimoler Head Coach Eighth Season Paul Schimoler, the winningest coach in program history, enters his eighth year as Saint Michael’s men’s lacrosse coach in 2011. In his seven years at Saint Michael’s, Schimoler has guided the Purple Knights to a 51-50 record and a .505 winning percentage (39-29 record and .574 winning percentage in Northeast-10 Conference regular-season action). After compiling a 4-10 season in 2004, Schimoler led Saint Michael’s to the biggest turnaround in program history in 2005, going 8-6 and earning a berth in the NE-10 playoffs. In 2006, Schimoler guided the Purple Knights to a 9-6 record, including a home playoff win versus Bentley University to advance to the NE10 Semifinals. Completing a 9-7 season in 2007, the Purple Knights again hosted and won an NE-10 playoff contest. In 2008, Saint Michael’s finished with an 8-7 record, marking just the second time in program history Saint Michael’s earned four straight winning seasons (a five-year run from 1985-89 is the longest). Schimoler’s 2009 squad compiled a 7-7 record, the team’s fifth straight .500-or-better season, and earned a home playoff game for the fifth straight season. And in 2010, Saint Michael’s went .500 in conference play, the sixth straight season the program has reached that milestone in league action. Schimoler has done so in large part due to his widespread recruiting efforts. That, in addition to the Duffy Turf Field project completed in August of 2005, has helped the men’s lacrosse program sustain an unprecedented level of excellence.

During his time at Saint Michael’s, Schimoler has also been a member of the United States World Team Selection Committee, which helped pick the players who represented the country at the 2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships in London, Ontario. He has also been a featured speaker at the 2005 National U.S. Lacrosse Convention in Philadelphia, Pa. A 1989 graduate of Cornell University, he was a four time AllIvy and All-American selection and the Ivy League Rookie of the Year as a freshman. During his sophomore year the Big Red were crowned Ivy League Champions and were NCAA Division I runners-up in 1987 and 1988. In his final campaign he was named Ivy Player of the Year and was selected to the North-South team. Schimoler holds the Division I record for most saves in an NCAA Tournament (85, in 1988). As a result of his legendary collegiate career, Schimoler was inducted into the Cornell Hall of Fame in 1999. He also earned induction into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Port Washington (N.Y.) Youth Activities Hall of Fame in 2009. For the three seasons prior to joining Saint Michael’s, Schimoler was an assistant coach for Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, leading the Engineers to a 10-3 mark and a No. 19 national ranking in 2003. From 1992-94 he served as an assistant coach for his alma mater, Cornell, where he helped with the recruiting effort, organized team practices, and monitored the academic and athletic development of the players. For nearly two decades, he has been an instructor at numerous lacrosse camps throughout the country. He has been a guest speaker at regional and national clinics including the U.S. Lacrosse Foundation Vermont Chapter coaches’ clinic. He also co-developed and produced the lacrosse goaltending video “Peak Performance” in 1992 and that same year organized the “Stick it in Stowe” tournament. He has extensive post-collegiate playing experience as a member of the 1990 and 1994 World Teams, both of which were gold winners. He was drafted by the Boston Cannons of the Major Lacrosse League in 2001 and played club lacrosse in the USCLA where he was active in the national tournament circuit. He is still active in various men’s lacrosse leagues. “Paul’s impressive playing and coaching stints at Cornell University, and most recently Rensselaer, make him a great role model for our student-athletes both on and off the field,” said Saint Michael’s Athletics Director Geri Knortz at the time of Schimoler’s hiring. “We are thrilled to have him to Saint Michael’s.”

Assistant Coach Pat Ivory Pat Ivory ’08 Assistant Coach Third Season Pat Ivory, a four-year member of the Saint Michael’s men’s lacrosse team from 2005-08, remains with the squad for his third season as an assistant coach in 2011. In his first season as an assistant coach in 2009, he helped lead Saint Michael’s to a 7-7 record and a home playoff contest. In 2010, Ivory and the Purple Knights earned another .500-or-better conference mark. Ivory, a defender during his playing career, helped Saint Michael’s record four straight winning seasons during his career. As a senior in 2008, Ivory appeared in all but one contest, starting six games, and had 11 ground balls. A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Ivory graduated from Saint Michael’s in 2008 with a degree in history, and was a Dean’s List student as an undergraduate. Ivory has assisted with several of Saint Michael’s instructional camps, and he currently directs the youth and high school lacrosse programs at the Field House in Shelburne, Vt. Ivory, who resides in Burlington, has a younger brother, Ryan, who plays on the University at Albany men’s lacrosse team.

2011 Season Outlook The Saint Michael’s men’s lacrosse team narrowly missed qualifying for the playoffs for the sixth straight season in 2010, as three consecutive one-goal losses doomed the Purple Knights. However, Saint Michael’s still finished with a .500 Northeast-10 Conference record, and has the ability to return to the postseason in 2011 under eighth-year head coach Paul Schimoler thanks to an influx of incoming talent. Seniors The 2011 Purple Knights are a young squad, with just two seniors leading the team. Ryan Clunan emerged as an everyday started for Saint Michael’s last season, and was a force on defense, leading the team with 41 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. An NEILA Division II Preseason selection this season, Clunan anchors an above-average Saint Michael’s defensive corps. Seth Metayer, like Clunan, is back for his fourth and final season this spring. He was second on the team with 43 faceoffs wins last season, and is expected to serve a similar role this spring, with the hope to win more than half of his faceoff opportunities.

The top returnee of the group is Pete Donnally, who made an instant impact in 2010. An NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection last spring, Donnally was third for Saint Michael’s last season with 18 goals and 26 points, despite missing two games. He could eclipse those totals this spring, utilizing his speed and skill. Expected to join Donnally as a strong scoring threat is Marty Vanzo. A transfer from the University of Vermont, the local product should move immediately into the starting lineup for Saint Michael’s this spring, and could be among the conference’s leaders in several offensive categories. Also transferring to Saint Michael’s this spring is Austin Driscoll, who played at NCAA Division III Dickinson College in 2009. A quick midfielder and strong passer, Driscoll can be a factor at both ends of the field. President Dr. John J. Neuhauser Dr. John J. (Jack) Neuhauser enters his fourth year as the 16th President of Saint Michael’s College in 2010-11. He was named President on August 1, 2007, and was inaugurated on September 29, 2007. Neuhauser spent the two years prior to joining Saint Michael’s as University Professor of Boston College. From 1999 to 2005, he served as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College. From 1977 to 1999, Dr. Neuhauser served as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

26

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 part-time. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color. As dean of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Professor Neuhauser led a redesign of the MBA program to promote socially responsible, ethical management and to offer several joint degree programs: MBA-MSA, MBAJD and MBA-Ph.D. He is also credited with raising $20 million on his own for the Carroll School. A native of New York City, Dr. Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964, a master’s in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and a doctorate in operations research and statistics: mathematics, also from Rensselaer, in 1968. Professor Neuhauser is described “as an academic leader who strives for excellence first,” and as a person who is “very comfortable providing leadership within the framework of a strong Catholic institution.” Jack Neuhauser has been a member of the Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees since 2001. He is the father of three grown children. He has completed the Boston Marathon seven times.
