The Coaching Staff

Paul Morgan Head Coach (#17)

Ed Poland Assistant Coach

Paul Morgan, an Essex Junction native and former standout shortstop at Williams College, enters his second year as the head coach of the Saint Michael’s College baseball program in 2010. Morgan, who became the 19th head coach in the program’s 97-year history on August 11, 2008, led the Purple Knights to a 15-19 record in his first season in 2009. The 15 wins were just two shy of tying the program record, and are the most for a first-year head coach in program history. Among the team’s notable victories in 2009 were a pair of Division II victories versus the University of Minnesota-Crookston, and wins against both local rivals Middlebury College and Plattsburgh State University (beating both schools in the same season for the first time since 2004).

Ed Poland returns for his second year as an assistant coach with the Saint Michael’s College baseball program in 2009-10.

Morgan had a stellar four-year career as the starting shortstop at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. As a senior captain, Morgan led the Ephs to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) West and NESCAC Tournament titles, and to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in six seasons. He was twice named All-NESCAC and All-New England by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association, and was selected to the NCAA Division III New England Regional All-Tournament Team as a senior. Over his career, Morgan batted .361 with 208 hits, 129 runs batted in, and 119 runs scored.

Josh Jacobs, a high school teammate of head coach Paul Morgan and four-year collegiate standout, returns for his second year as an assistant baseball coach with Saint Michael's in 2009-10.

Poland has been involved with coaching for more than 20 years in several capacities. Most recently, he spent five years (2004-08) as the head coach of the Essex (Vt.) High School junior varsity baseball team, including an undefeated season in 2008. He also spent 12 years as the head coach of the Essex Junction Little League program, and has also served as a head and assistant football coach at various levels. His overall record as a head coach stands at 209-54 (a .795 winning percentage).

As an athlete, Poland was a four-year standout third baseman “We are excited to have Paul join the Saint Michael’s community at Essex High School, and played eight years of semi-professional as head baseball coach,” Director of Athletics Geri Knortz said upon baseball for the Burlington (Vt.) For three summers as an undergraduate, Morgan played in the NECBL with the North Adams (Mass.) SteepleCats, and one summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League. He also served as an assistant coach for the Essex (Vt.) American Legion baseball team in 2007, and the Knights of Columbus-South Burlington (Vt.) American Legion baseball team in 2009.

Jacobs enjoyed much success as a third baseman at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass., where he graduated in 2007. While at WNEC, Jacobs and the Golden Bears won three Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championships and made three NCAA Division III Tournaments. The squad also had a winning season in each of his four years, including three straight 30-win seasons, and a programrecord 35 wins as a junior in 2006. WNEC went 127-46 during Jacobs’ four-year career. A native of Essex Junction, Vt., Jacobs was a high school teammate of Morgan’s at Essex High School, where he graduated in 2003.

The Saint Michael’s College baseball team is poised for one of the finest seasons in program history in 2010. With second-year head coach Paul Morgan at the helm, along with assistant coaches Ed Poland and Josh Jacobs, plus virtually the entire pitching staff back from last year’s 15-win team, the Purple Knights should have the depth and experience necessary to take on a challenging schedule.

Season Outlook

several strong options reside. Sophomore Chad Estey, who had a standout debut season while playing first base last spring, should make the switch to catcher in 2010. He compiled 22 runs batted in while batting .356 in the middle of the order last year, and will be a fixture in the heart of the Purple Knights’ attack the next three years. 2010 Spring Break/2009 Wiffleball Tournament For the fourth straight season, the Saint Michael’s College baseball team will open its season in sunny Florida. The 2010 Purple Knights will take part in the Palm Beach Challenge for the first time, playing regional powers Franklin Pierce University, the University of New Haven, and Caldwell College. Among the nine games that Saint Michael’s is scheduled to play in Florida is a evening contest at Nova Southeastern University. In 2008 and 2009, Saint Michael’s played in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, and in 2007, the Purple Knights played in the Port Charlotte (Fla.) Invitational.. Those that will be playing in their fourth straight Spring Break in Florida include senior tri-captains Matt Beaulieu (left) and Tim Pilczak (pictures taken on previous Spring Break trips by Matt Byrne ’02).

On September 25, 2009, the Saint Michael’s baseball team spent the afternoon playing at Fenway Park and Wrigley Field - sort of. The Purple Knights played a round robin Wiffleball tournament at Little Fenway and Little Wrigley, unique 1/4-scale replicas of Boston’s Fenway Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field, respectively, built in the backyard of the home of Pat and Beth O'Connor in Essex, Vt.. Little Fenway was built in 2001, and is the home for the Travis Roy Tournament. The annual tournament helps raise money for the Travis Roy Foundation, established in 1997 to help spinal cord injury survivors and to fund research into a cure. Little Wrigley, meanwhile, was completed in 2007 and greatly increases the tournament capacity for the complex. All pictures taken by Saint Michael’s baseball head coach Paul Morgan.

2009 Year in Review

16

The Saint Michael’s College baseball team had a memorable season in 2009, the program’s first under head coach Paul Morgan. The team won 15 games, just two shy of tying the program record, including a stretch of nine wins in 11 games during the middle of the season. The Purple Knights opened the year on March 15 with a dramatic 1211 victory against the University of Minnesota-Crookston in Florida, rallying for two runs in their final at bat. Saint Michael’s also knocked off instate foe Middlebury College, 8-7, on April 14, and ended the season with a 6-4 win in game two against rival Plattsburgh State University on April 29. Several players had outstanding seasons for the Purple Knights. Junior Matt Beaulieu (left) had one of the best years in program history, recording a program record 56 base hits and tying the program mark with five triples. He earned Daktronics Division II All-East Region Second Team honors, and last summer played for the New Bedford (Mass.) Bay Sox of the prestigious New England Collegiate Baseball League. Four first-years also had strong debut seasons. Austin Ziskie led the pitching staff with four wins and 44 strikeouts, while first baseman Chad Estey was second on the squad (behind Beaulieu) with 36 base hits and 22 runs batted in. Patrick Lawler, meanwhile, became the everyday shortstop while finishing with a .311 batting average, and left fielder Tim McConnell led the team with 21 walks and was second with 27 runs scored. Four seniors played their final season for Saint Michael’s in 2009. Their class won 51 games during their four years, including 16 victories in 2007. Members of the Class of 2009 were (bottom, left to right): Jake Chadwick, Colin Dudunake, Joe Gil, and Ryan Reather.
