Currently in its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier allaround NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont (Saint Michael’s). Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008, the University of New Haven joined the conference, replacing Bryant University, which moved to NCAA Division I, and in 2009, Adelphi University became the league’s 16th member, making the NE-10 the largest Division II conference in the nation. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.

The Coaching Staff

Joe Connelly Men’s Head Coach

Molly Peters Women’s Head Coach

Saint Michael’s College graduate Joseph Connelly returns for his 10th year as the the College’s men’s cross country coach in 2010.

Molly (Enman) Peters, a former All-American and three-sport standout at Middlebury College, returns for her fifth season as the head coach of the Saint Michael’s College women’s cross country program in 2010. She is the seventh head coach in the program’s 32-year history, and guided the 2007 Purple Knights to an eighthplace finish at the NCAA Regionals.

In Connelly’s nine seasons at the helm of the Purple Knights, the team has placed in the top-three at the Vermont State Meet five times and has earned a topeight or better ranking at NCAA Regionals four times. During the 2003 season, Saint Michael’s qualified its first runner in program history to compete at the NCAA Championship. In addition to coaching the men’s cross country team, Connelly has also been at the helm of the College’s Nordic ski program since 2001. Connelly is active in the local running community, serving as the Technical Coordinator for RunVermont, Inc, producer of the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon, the second largest marathon in New England, and a Runner’s World top-20 U.S. marathon. A six time letter-winner at Saint Michael’s, class of 1987, in both Nordic skiing and cross country, Connelly has run in 20 marathons, including 10 Boston Marathons. He has also competed in the U.S. Triathlon Series and has worked as a personal trainer for individuals who want to improve their long distance running. A native of Glenville, N.Y., Connelly competed in nordic and alpine skiing, golf and tennis at ScotiaGlenville High School. Prior to joining the coaching staff of Saint Michael’s, Connelly was employed as an accountant in the long-term care and software industries.

In 2008, the program had its first-ever individual champion at the Vermont State Championship, a field that includes elite programs such as the University of Vermont and Middlebury. And in 2009, she guided the Purple Knights to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Regionals. Peters has gathered a wealth of coaching experience since graduating from Middlebury in 1997 as an Academic AllAmerican with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. Prior to joining Saint Michael’s, Peters coached at Burlington High School as an assistant cross country coach, as well as a sprint and hurdle coach from 2003-08. In 2002, Peters served as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at the Division III University of Redlands in California. Prior to working at Redlands, Peters spent four years as an assistant men’s and women’s cross country and track coach at her alma mater, as she was the head distance coach for the indoor and outdoor track teams and coached numerous AllAmericans and NCAA Division III national champions. While an undergraduate at Middlebury, Peters was a fouryear member of the cross country, track and Nordic ski teams. She was an NCAA qualifier in cross country as a senior, and an All-American in track and field in the 1500-meter run in 1997. She also qualified three times for the NCAA Championships in Nordic skiing, earning All-American status once. In addition to her vast coaching and playing experience, Peters trained in Nordic skiing in Park City, Utah, with aspirations of qualifying for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. She currently works at Sleepy Hollow Inn in Huntington, where she serves as events coordinator and Nordic ski instructor, as well as coaching the Bill Koch junior ski program.

Women’s Outlook

Junior Caitlin Ferland (top) and sophomore Jennifer Labrenz should be two of the top-three runners for the Purple Knights in 2010.

www.smcathletics.com

The 2010 Saint Michael’s College women’s cross country team returns 12 runners from last year’s squad that placed 11th at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. Fifth-year head coach Molly Peters also has several new faces on her 2010 team that should help the Purple Knights move into the league’s top-10. Expected to lead the Purple Knights this fall is freshman Gabrielle Naranja. With the potential to run five kilometers in under 20 minutes, the multi-sport athlete from Fort Kent, Maine, could be a major factor in the league the next four years. Challenging Naranja is sophomore Jennifer Labrenz. She had a strong first season last fall, including a second-place team finish at the 2009 NE-10 Championship, and should consistently be around 21 minutes for five kilometers. Juniors Caitlin Ferland and Milijana Lacmanovic will be expected to consistently run in the top five in 2010. Both were top-seven contributors for the Purple Knights last season, and after a year of strong off-season training, should challenge Labrenz and score points for the squad. Two more first-years that have the potential to be topseven runners for the Purple Knights in 2010 are Leanna Hammond and Maura O’Riordan. Both have connections to Saint Michael’s, as Hammond grew up minutes away from the campus in Burlington, while one of O’Riordan’s brothers was a four-year member of the SMC men’s cross country team from 2003-06. Guiding the program in 2010 will be the team’s senior tricaptains: Shauna Harrington, Kate Loughlin, and Sarah Regan. Regan, the lone four-year member of the squad, has the potential to run five kilometers in around 23 minutes, and could crack the team’s top-seven. Loughlin is similar to Regan, and should successfully push many of the team’s younger runners. Harrington, meanwhile, returns for her fourth year of collegiate running, and third with Saint Michael’s. Three other Purple Knights that should regularly be top-10 runners - and perhaps top-seven - are junior Erin Kennally, and sophomores Elena Bilodeau and Allison Fusco. Kennally and Bilodeau both had solid first seasons with the program in 2009, while Fusco joins Saint Michael’s for her first season with the squad in 2010. All told, the Purple Knights have 24 runners on their women’s roster in 2010, one of the largest squads in program history. That depth should be important for the program not only this fall, but for years to come. Saint Michael’s will compete in seven races in 2010, facing some of the top runners in New England and the Northeast. As always, the Purple Knights will host an invitational tournament on October 22), as the Purple Knights welcome four programs to campus. Two weeks later, Saint Michael’s will take part in the NE-10 Championship, hosted by Stonehill College, and on Nov. 21, the Purple Knights will end their year at the NCAA Regionals in Boston’s Franklin Park.

5

Men’s Outlook

Junior co-captain Tom Perekslis (top) and classmate Robert Sitzer should be among the top-five runners for Saint Michael’s in 2010.

6

The 2010 Saint Michael’s College men’s cross country, led by 10th-year head coach Joe Connelly, team should be an improved squad from last year. In 2009, the Purple Knights recorded an 11th-place finish in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, and Saint Michael’s has hopes of a top-10 showing this fall, thanks to seven returnees and six strong newcomers. Over half of the 13-member squad are juniors, including six runners back from last year. That group is led by Matt Smith, who should lead Saint Michael’s throughout the fall, and seeks to consistently run eight kilometers in around 27 minutes. Co-captain Brian McDonnell, meanwhile, has made great strides in the last year, and could be a top-three runner for the Purple Knights in 2010. He should crack the 28minute plateau for eight kilometers on a regular basis. Fellow co-captain Tom Perekslis is back for his third season with the team, and should be a top-five runner for the program this fall. He also lends experience and leadership to a program that doesn’t have a senior for the second straight season. Classmate Robert Sitzer, like McDonnell and Perekslis, will be crucial to the team’s success, as he’ll be expected to be a top-five contributor. He should run eight kilometers in less than 30 minutes by the NE-10 Championship in early November. Michael Cardillo, meanwhile, will look to regain the form he displayed two years ago, when he was one of the top freshmen in the conference. He should place among the squad’s top-seven runners this fall, with the potential for more. The final two juniors in the deep class are newcomers Kevin O’Riordan and Kyle Hoseit. Hoseit is a transfer from Southern Vermont College, while O’Riordan has a sister (Maura) running for the Saint Michael’s women, along with a brother (Tom) who ran for the Purple Knights from 2003-06. A pair of sophomores return from last year’s team, including Colin Delaney. Delaney was one of Saint Michael’s top runners in 2009, as he led the team at both the NCAA Regionals and the State Championship. Patrick Smith, meanwhile, has shown improvement from last season, and has the potential to move up the Purple Knights’ depth chart. Completing the roster are four first-years, all with promise. Heading the group is Sam Brigham, who should challenge for the top spot on the team in 2010. He should consistently run eight kilometers in under 29 minutes, with potential for sub-28 minute 8Ks, which would make him one of the better newcomers in the NE-10. Steve Weng also has a strong chance to become a topfive runner for Saint Michael’s, and can push many of the squad’s returnees to faster times. Completing the class are Dana Glubiak (believed to be the first runner from Ohio in program history), and local runner Rick Kline.

President Dr. John J. Neuhauser Dr. John J. (Jack) Neuhauser, enters his fourth year as the 16th president of Saint Michael’s College in 2010-11. He was named President on August 1, 2007, and was inaugurated on September 29, 2007.

Neuhauser spent the two years prior to joining Saint Michael’s as University Professor of Boston College. From 1999 to 2005, he served as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College. From 1977 to 1999, Dr. Neuhauser served as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

8

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 part-time. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color. As dean of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Professor Neuhauser led a redesign of the MBA program to promote socially responsible, ethical management and to offer several joint degree programs: MBA-MSA, MBAJD and MBA-Ph.D. He is also credited with raising $20 million on his own for the Carroll School. A native of New York City, Dr. Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964, a master’s in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and a doctorate in operations research and statistics: mathematics, also from Rensselaer, in 1968. Professor Neuhauser is described “as an academic leader who strives for excellence first,” and as a person who is “very comfortable providing leadership within the framework of a strong Catholic institution.” Jack Neuhauser has been a member of the Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees since 2001. He is the father of three grown children. He has completed the Boston Marathon seven times.
