The Northeast-10 Conference

Currently in its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont (Saint Michael’s). Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008, the University of New Haven joined the conference, replacing Bryant University, which moved to NCAA Division I, and in 2009, Adelphi University became the NE-10’s 16th member, the most in Division II. The NE-10 volleyball schedule is comprised of 15 matches, with each school playing its conference opponents once. The season is capped off by an eight-team conference tournament. The winner of the conference tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional tournament. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s tennis.

The Coaching Staff

Chris Kilmer Head Coach

Kelly Garthwait Assistant Coach

Chris Kilmer enters his third season as head coach of the Saint Michael’s volleyball program in 2010. He has guided the team to a 20-33 record in his first two seasons, just the second coach in the program’s 31-year history to record at least 20 wins in his or her first two seasons with the team.

Kelly Garthwait, a four-year member and former captain of the Saint Michael’s College volleyball program, returns to the program for her first season as an assistant coach in 2010.

He led the Purple Knights to a 12-14 record in 2008, matching the most wins in a season for the program since 1995. Among the program’s wins in 2008 was a five-set victory versus the College of Saint Rose, the first win against the Golden Knights in program history.

Garthwait, a libero and defensive specialist for the Purple Knights, graduated magna cum laude in May with degrees in psychology and elementary education. She was a member of the Psi Chi and Kappa Delta Pi national honor societies, and also in the psychology and education honors programs while at Saint Michael’s. She earned multiple Dean’s List honors, and was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District selection as a senior. She also was an NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection several times.

On the court, Garthwait played in all 384 games for the Purple Knights from 2006-09. As a senior captain in 2009, she led the squad with 338 digs, and was second on the team with 30 service aces. She was second on the team in assists as a sophomore, and second on the squad in service aces as a freshman. Ali Jones Assistant Coach

The 2010 Saint Michael’s College volleyball team is tall more than half the squad is 5-10 or taller - and with that height comes increased expectations. “The biggest thing one will notice about our team this year is its size,” said third-year head coach Chris Kilmer. “We’re much taller than in year’s past, and that will make us a better team.” Seniors Saint Michael’s will rely heavily on its two senior co-captains this season. Not only are both players talented, but with no juniors on the roster, they represent the only players on the team with more than one year of collegiate experience. Lindsey Frazier is arguably the team’s top offensive weapon. She set the program record for kills in a season in 2009, and barring an injury, will set the program’s career mark early this fall. “Lindsey is going to be our leader and our superstar again,” said Kilmer. “She’ll set the tone, and should shatter the program’s career kills mark.” Sara Reney, meanwhile, provides a solid offensive compliment to Frazier. Reney finished second behind Frazier last season in attack percentage, and third in kills and kills per game. “The fact that we don’t have any juniors makes the two of them all the more important,” said Kilmer.

Samantha Clairemont, meanwhile, is one of the team’s best blocking threats. In 2009, she led the Purple Knights with 23 solo blocks and 39 assisted blocks while playing all 100 games. She also placed fourth on the team in kills. “She was our best blocker last season, and will continue to help us in that role this year,” said Kilmer.

First-Years Completing the 13-player roster are six first-years, all of whom possess the talent to raise the program to the next level. Taking over the role of setter this fall is Jessica McLeod. One of the tallest setters in program history at 5-10, McLeod adds a new dimension to the program that has been lacking in recent years. “She is a superb setter who plays great defense,” said Kilmer. “She’s also extremely consistent, and knows how to run an offense at a high level.” Rachel Levy, a standout high school player in New Jersey, joins Walsh and Reney in a formidable outside hitting attack. “She has the natural athletic ability to be a top outside hitter on our team, and Sophomore Tracy Peterka tallied 213 digs as be recognizable in our tough conference,” Sophomores a A handful of sophomores - all of first-year in 2009, and also led the squad said Kilmer. with 53 service aces. whom made an immediate splash as Adding to the program’s increased rookies last season - represent the core of size is middle hitter Chelsey Covitz. the squad in 2010. President Dr. John J. Neuhauser Dr. John J. (Jack) Neuhauser, enters his fourth year as the 16th president of Saint Michael’s College in 2010-11. He was named President on August 1, 2007, and was inaugurated on September 29, 2007.

Neuhauser spent the two years prior to joining Saint Michael’s as University Professor of Boston College. From 1999 to 2005, he served as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College. From 1977 to 1999, Dr. Neuhauser served as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

14

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 part-time. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color. As dean of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Professor Neuhauser led a redesign of the MBA program to promote socially responsible, ethical management and to offer several joint degree programs: MBA-MSA, MBAJD and MBA-Ph.D. He is also credited with raising $20 million on his own for the Carroll School. A native of New York City, Dr. Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964, a master’s in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and a doctorate in operations research and statistics: mathematics, also from Rensselaer, in 1968. Professor Neuhauser is described “as an academic leader who strives for excellence first,” and as a person who is “very comfortable providing leadership within the framework of a strong Catholic institution.” Jack Neuhauser has been a member of the Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees since 2001. He is the father of three grown children. He has completed the Boston Marathon seven times.
