This Is Saint Michael’s College

Saint Michael’s College, one of the nation’s Best Liberal Art Colleges in the 2008 U.S. News and World Report rankings and one of The Princeton Review’s Best 368 Colleges, is a Catholic liberal arts college committed to creating a life-changing educational experience for students from throughout New England, the nation and the world. Saint Michael’s involves 1,900 undergraduate students in an on-campus residential community characterized by lifelong volunteer service, global perspectives and exceptional teaching in traditional arts and sciences, as well as contemporary fields of study. The College is situated on 440 scenic acres overlooking Burlington and Lake Champlain, with superlative views of Vermont’s Green Mountains. The Saint Michael’s community is further enriched by approximately 500 graduate students and 200 international students in the College’s School of International Studies, one of the nation’s oldest intensive English language institutes. A vibrant campus experience encompasses everything from sports to academic enrichment, to the fine and performing arts, to the unique international character of the college. Saint Michael’s is known as a terrific place for students who want to make the world a better place, as service to the community and to all humankind is a vibrant part of student life, reflecting the heritage of service of the Edmundite priests who founded Saint Michael’s--the one and only Edmundite college in the world--in 1904. Today, more than 70 percent of the student body actively pursues community service projects through Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (M.O.V.E.), reflecting a unique passion for social justice issues on campus.

Burlington, Vermont “The Nation’s Most Livable City” Located in the northwest corner of beautiful Vermont, Burlington is the state’s largest city with a population of approximately 50,000 people, a number that more than doubles when you add the surrounding towns. Burlington is a thriving community that has just the right combination of cultural activities, great food, shopping, and outdoor pursuits. A&E Television called Burlington the country’s No. 1 city in its “Top Ten Cities To Have It All” poll. Church Street, the city’s downtown marketplace and epicenter of all Burlington has to offer, has been rated as one of America’s “Great American Main Streets” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Below are some of the accolades “the Queen City” was honored within the last several years by various publications and organizations.

The Princeton Review features Saint Michael’s in its 2009 edition of “Best 368 Colleges”, the fourth straight year that Saint Michael’s has earned this distinction.

With nearly 100 percent of undergraduates living on campus, residential life is designed to enable academic pursuits, cocurricular activities, and the pure enjoyment of the college years and the Vermont experience to converge in a total Saint Michael’s College experience. The Tarrant Recreation Center and Ross Sports Center form the epicenter for athletic and recreational activities on campus. The College offers 21 intercollegiate sports that compete at the NCAA Division II level with all but four teams participating in the highly competitive Northeast-10 Conference, the second-largest Division II conference in the nation. For students who are looking for something slightly less competitive, there is a wide variety of club and intramural sports such as rugby, basketball, softball and even table tennis. Our acclaimed Wilderness Program also bring students into the great Vermont outdoors for adventure sports and survival training, from beginner to advanced certification levels. Saint Michael’s is home to Greater Burlington’s only Actor’s Equity professional summer theater, the Saint Michael’s Playhouse. On North Campus at historic Fort Ethan Allen, the Elley-Long Music Center at Saint Michael’s College is headquarters for the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association and provides rehearsal and performance space for the Vermont Mozart Festival. In recent years Saint Michael’s students and professors have received Rhodes, Woodrow Wilson, Guggenheim, Fulbright, National Science Foundation and other grants, and Saint Michael’s professors have been named Vermont Professor of the Year in four of the last eight years.

The Eastern College Athletic Conference

Since its foundation 72 years ago, the Eastern College Athletic Conference has emerged as a nationwide leader in service, with 297 member institutions (more than 20 percent of the NCAA’s membership) in Divisions I, II and III, ranging in location from Maine to North Carolina, and westerly to Illinois. Located in Centerville, Mass., on Cape Cod, the ECAC administers nearly 100 preseason and postseason events for more than 125,000 student-athletes. The ECAC Women’s East ice hockey schedule is comprised of 20 games, with Saint Michael’s playing all league members at least once. Starting with the 2009-10 season, the ECAC Women's East League will have one 12-team division. Saint Michael’s will have the opportunity to compete against each team twice, with the acception of Saint Anselm, New England College, and Plymouth State, who they will only compete against once in an ECAC game. The top eight ranked teams at the end of the regular season will continue on to postseason play in the ECAC East Tournament, scheduled for February 27, March 6 and the championship game on March 7. Because of Saint Michael’s and Saint Anselm’s status as NCAA Division II institutions (and Holy Cross’s NCAA Division I status), these three schools are ineligible to compete in the ECAC East Tournament. Those three schools (plus NCAA Division I Sacred Heart) instead compete in the ECAC Women’s Open Tournament, which this year is scheduled for February 26-27.

The Coaching Staff

Chris Donovan M’06 Head Coach

Chris Donovan, the only head coach in the varsity history of the Saint Michael’s women's ice hockey program, enters his 11th season at the helm of the Purple Knights in 2010-11. In 2009-10, Donovan's squad won the fifth annual Saint Michael's Holiday Classic, as the Purple Knights defeated Colby College (the program's first win against a NESCAC institution) and Plymouth State University to claim the title. In 2007-08 led the Purple Knights to a program-record eight wins, including the first victories in program history versus the University of Massachusetts Boston, the University of Southern Maine, and Norwich University. Donovan has an extensive hockey background. He played for Archbishop William’s High School in Braintree, Mass. and then went on to play at Norwich University from 1969-73, serving as captain of the Cadets in his senior year. He served as an assistant coach for the Saint Michael’s men from 1991-94. In 1995, Donovan took over as coaching director for the Vermont Northern Lights women’s program. He worked with the 13-15 age group who

Jennifer Wilson Assistant Coach

Jennifer Wilson, a former NCAA ice hockey student-athlete with years of hands-on ice hockey experience in a variety of capacities, was named the Saint Michael’s College women’s ice hockey assistant coach on September 10, 2010. Wilson will assist Donovan with all aspects of the program. Wilson is familiar with the ECAC Women’s East Conference, as she was a member of the standout Manhattanville College women’s ice hockey team during the 2005-06 season. Manhattanville, based in Purchase, N.Y., won the ECAC Women’s East Championship that season and finished with a 23-4-1 record. As a first-year that season, Wilson suffered a knee injury and concussion that ended her collegiate playing career. A native of Manitowoc, Wis., Wilson transferred to Columbia College in Chicago, Ill., where she graduated cum laude in 2009 with a degree in television writing/production and entertainment marketing. Losi and Guarente played in every game as juniors, while Losi tied for the team lead in assists last year. Kaleigh Ferrari and Emily Ham round out a formidable group of senior forwards. Ferrari played in every game and recorded a goal and two assists, while Ham saw action in 21 contests. Levin played in 23 games on offense and contributed a goal and two assists, and Skrzat scored two goals and an assist in just four games last season. Stevens saw action in 10 games last season backing up Goldman in net, and posted a .876 save percentage. She enters this season ranked third all-timein goals-against average and fifth in save percentage for Saint Michael’s. Coughlin, D’Angelo and Hallisey saw limited time last season, but will look to make a larger contribution to the Purple Knights as sophomores. FRESHMEN Seven new faces will join the Purple Knights this season. Michele Doherty, Mary Liz Pinnella, Tracey Stevenson and Macey Thomas are forwards who will compete for time with an elite group of upperclassmen goal scorers. President John J. Neuhauser John J. (Jack) Neuhauser began his tenure as the president of Saint Michael’s College on Aug. 1, 2007 and was inaugurated on Sept. 29, 2007. He is the 16th president in the school’s 105 year history, taking over for Dr. Marc A. vanderHeyden, who retired from the position at the conclusion of the 2006-07 school year. Neuhauser served from 1999 to 2005 as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, and from 1977 to 1999 as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Neuhauser said on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s previous president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

16

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 parttime. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color. As dean of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Professor Neuhauser led a re-design of the MBA program to promote socially responsible, ethical management and to offer several joint degree programs: MBA-MSA, MBAJD and MBA-Ph.D. He is also credited with raising $20 million on his own for the Carroll School. A native of New York City, Dr. Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964, a master’s in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and a doctorate in operations research and statistics: mathematics, also from Rensselaer, in 1968. Professor Neuhauser is described “as an academic leader who strives for excellence first,” and as a person who is “very comfortable providing leadership within the framework of a strong Catholic institution.” He has been a member of the Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees since 2001. He is the father of three grown children and has completed the Boston Marathon seven times.

Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex (left) is Saint Michael’s new artificial turf playing field. Built in the summer of 2005, it is home to Saint Michael’s field hockey team, as well as the men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams.

The field was made possible due to a generous lead gift by John and Kathy Duffy, whose son, Kevin, played lacrosse at Saint Michael’s. The Duffys made their gift in memory of their son Christopher, who died in the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.

The Saint Michael’s basketball teams and women’s volleyball team play in the Ross Sports Center, which was renovated in the summer of 2001.
