The Northeast-10 Conference

Completing its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont (Saint Michael’s). Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce College, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008, the University of New Haven joined the conference, replacing Bryant University, which moved to NCAA Division I. And in 2009, Adelphi University became the conference’s 16th member. The NE-10 women’s soccer schedule is comprised of 15 games, with each school playing its conference opponents once. The season is capped off by an eight-team conference tournament. The winner of the conference tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II New England Regional tournament. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.

The Coaching Staff

Marcel Choquette Head Coach

Marcel Choquette, the winningest coach in the history of the Saint Michael’s College women’s soccer program, enters his 12th season at the helm of the Purple Knights in 2010. Choquette has guided his teams to seven .500-or-better seasons in his 11 years, including five straight from 2000-04, and three consecutive winning campaigns from 2000-02. In just six years, Choquette became the winningest coach in school history, matching the record of 52 victories set by Azzie Azagoh Kouadio from 1988-96. He has the second-highest winning percentage of any women’s soccer coach in program history (.465, 84-98-17). In addition, his teams’ list of achievements include: most wins in a season, most goals in a season, most assists in a season, most total points in a season, three consecutive conference tournament appearances, and the program’s first ever bid to the ECAC Division II Tournament. The Purple Knights have finished .500-or-better in two of the last three seasons, including an 8-8-2 mark in 2008. Choquette came to Saint Michael’s from nearby Missisquoi Valley Union High School where he taught Physical Education and served as the Director of Athletics and Head Coach for the girl’s soccer program. In addition to 12 years of experience in public education, he also had coaching stints at Norwich University and Lyndon State College. In addition to his work experience, he holds a Master’s degree in Athletic Administration, and an Advance National Coaching Diploma from the NSCAA. He is a staff coach for the Nordic Spirit Premier Soccer club and is the head coach for the Under-11 and Under-12 girls’ premiere teams, and is a New England ODP Regional staff coach. Choquette’s playing experience includes a four-year college career at Lyndon State College where he was a three-time AllConference selection, and an All-New England and All-American candidate. He is still among the school record holders for career points, career goals, and career assists. On Sept. 18, 2009, Choquette was inducted into the Lyndon State College Athletics Hall of Fame. He has also played professionally, most recently with the Vermont Wanderers (Voltage). Along with his coaching duties, Choquette has administrative duties in the Athletic Department, including Intramural Director and Director of Summer Sports Camps.

Cary Rivett Assistant Coach Cary Rivett, a standout scholar-athlete at Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern New Hampshire University, was named Saint Michael’s women’s soccer assistant coach on July 26. “I am thrilled to have Cary join our program,” said head coach Marcel Choquette. “She brings an extensive playing background, along with lots of energy, the same way she plays the game. She will be involved with all aspects of our program.” “I’m very excited to begin my college coaching career at Saint Michael’s and return to the NE-10,” said Rivett. “I look forward to bringing the same passion I play with to my new responsibilities as an assistant coach for the Purple Knights.” Rivett was a standout scholarship student-athlete for four years at SNHU, where she graduated magna cum laude in 2009 with a bachelor of arts degree in communications. As a fullback, she played in 72 career contests, including 67 starts, and netted two goals and one assist for five career points. As a senior tri-captain, she earned NE-10 AllConference First Team honors, and was also a Third Team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performer for the second straight season, as she anchored a defense that allowed just 1.22 goals per game. She landed on the NE-10 AllConference Second Team her junior season, and was one of five players on the squad to start all 19 games that season. Academically, Rivett was an NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll Gold Scholar, and also was named to the NE-10 All-Academic Team as a junior. She earned SNHU’s Outstanding Student in Communication Program Award, and also was named to the Dean’s List twice and the President’s List six semesters. Since graduation, Rivett spent the summer of 2009 playing professionally for the Football Club of Espoo, Finland, a member of the Women’s Finnish Premier League. Since March, she has served as an assistant coach for the New England Football Club in Boston’s MetroWest region, helping coach an Under-16 girl’s squad in the Massachusetts Premier League. A native of Uxbridge, Mass., Rivett has worked as a substitute teacher at the Clara Barton Elementary School and the Chaffee Elementary School, both in Oxford, Mass.

Chris Coleman Assistant Coach

Chris Coleman returns for his 10th year as an assistant coach with the Saint Michael’s women’s soccer program in 2010. He assists head coach Marcel Choquette with most aspects of the program. In his previous nine seasons, Coleman has helped lead the program to six .500-or-better seasons and a 6982-13 record. Coleman is a 1995 graduate of Johnson State College.

The 2010 Saint Michael’s College women’s soccer team looks a lot like the 2009 squad - literally. With 21 of the program’s 23 players from 2009 back this fall, the Purple Knights are a veteran unit that, under the leadership of 12th-year head coach Marcel Choquette, has the potential to reach the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Seniors The Purple Knights will rely heavily upon their four seniors, all of whom have been with the program the last three seasons. Up top, Jenn Senecal is one of the league’s quickest strikers. She tied for the team lead with four goals and nine points in 2009, and could do so again this fall. Katie Murphy, meanwhile, is one of the league’s tallest and strongest midfielders. Snakebit last season, Murphy looks to stay healthy and, if so, is poised for a big 2010. Also expected to start in the midfield this fall is Liz Freiberger. Despite a scoring slump in 2009, Freiberger has the potential to contribute offensively in her final season. Rounding out the senior quartet is Mary Diebold. A smart and athletic defender, Diebold is expected to play nearly every minute in the backfield this fall, and will often mark the opposition’s best forward.

Season Outlook

Completing the class are the team’s three goalkeepers. Ashleigh Adams and Brittany Cocozza split time in 2009, with Adams playing approximately 75 percent of the time. That ratio may move closer to an even split in 2010. Mary Farnsworth, meanwhile, rounds out the netminding trio, and will push for playing time.

Sophomores

Eight sophomores - all of whom contributed as first-years in 2009 - look to make the next step this season. Heading the list is Megan Olsen. An NE-10 All-Rookie selection in 2009, Olsen is a tall and athletic midfielder that has the potential to earn All-Conference honors again this year. President Dr. John J.Neuhauser Dr. John J. (Jack) Neuhauser, enters his fourth year as the 16th president of Saint Michael’s College in 2010-11. He was named President on August 1, 2007, and was inaugurated on September 29, 2007. Neuhauser spent the two years prior to joining Saint Michael’s as University Professor of Boston College. From 1999 to 2005, he served as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College. From 1977 to 1999, Dr. Neuhauser served as dean and professor of the Boston College Carroll School of Management. “I’ve come to know and admire Saint Michael’s College as a trustee for five years, and quite literally, to know this place is to love it,” Professor Neuhauser said, on being named the next president of the college. “The academic qualities of Saint Michael’s, its faculty commitment to scholarship and teaching, the enthusiasm and curiosity of its students, and its talented administration and staff, should put it in the first ranks of liberal arts colleges. That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”

22

During his six years as academic vice president and dean of faculties of Boston College, Professor Neuhauser was responsible for leadership of the faculty in seven schools and colleges, containing 670 full-time faculty members, and nearly 400 part-time. During this time the number of full-time faculty increased by 50 and the number of endowed professorships more than doubled, to 45. Half the new faculty were persons of color. As dean of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Professor Neuhauser led a redesign of the MBA program to promote socially responsible, ethical management and to offer several joint degree programs: MBA-MSA, MBAJD and MBA-Ph.D. He is also credited with raising $20 million on his own for the Carroll School. A native of New York City, Dr. Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964, a master’s in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and a doctorate in operations research and statistics: mathematics, also from Rensselaer, in 1968. Professor Neuhauser is described “as an academic leader who strives for excellence first,” and as a person who is “very comfortable providing leadership within the framework of a strong Catholic institution.” Jack Neuhauser has been a member of the Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees since 2001.
