Congratulations!

LOY / Summer 2021

Fellowship for British Hairdressing Spotlight Award

We are thrilled to announce that this year’s overall winner of Learner of the Year 2021 is Jessica Moody from Bridgwater and Taunton College, Bridgwater Campus.

W

e spoke to Jessica before the ceremony about how it felt to be a finalist. You can read more about Jessica and how she felt to win this incredible accolade on our website: www.concepthairmag.co.uk Here’s what Jessica had to say: “This is really exciting. I only started doing hairdressing in September 2020, so this is absolutely amazing. When I told my dad I’d made it to the final I nearly cried. Winning is everything. I look at Concept Hair on Instagram and there are so many other amazing hairdressers out there. I feel honoured. It’s a really tough competition.

It’s something I can take with me and use as a springboard to go onto even bigger things. What I’d say to anyone thinking of entering in 2022 is, the brief is open to interpretation. You can always put your own twist on it and do your own thing. I’d also say, be your own supporter. No-one else will believe in you as much as you believe in yourself.” Congratulations to Jessica. The Concept Hair team can’t wait to see where Jessica’s career takes her. We are sure she is destined for great things.

You can always “ put your own twist on it and do your own thing

the winner Jacqueline Kankam-Hoppe Central Hair London

How would you describe the stunning colour in this image? I actually nicknamed this look the Jellyfish Spock as I took the inspiration from a jellyfish and also Spock from Star Trek, and I combined the two. What do you have to take into account before embarking on a dramatic colour change?

Any particular technique used to accomplish this colour transformation? I painted a shine line around the hair, working slowly and using the natural hair fall. I worked with the contours of the head to make sure the placement was just right.

This colour is very on-trend and has transformed a beautiful bob into a head-turning sensation. What do you have to take into account before embarking on a dramatic colour change? A thorough consultation is a must before every colour but even more so when it comes to a big change. I’d advise trying out a similar shade from a semipermanent range first before taking the plunge. In a salon environment, what tips would you offer a colourist who has been asked by a client to give them a bold new look? Spend time on your consultation. Do not sugar coat it. If a client asks you whether bleach will damage her hair, the answer is “Yes, but we are here to do control damage.” Take her on a journey to achieve the perfect balance with what she wants and what is achievable.

This image was for a photoshoot, so I took into account how the colour would look on the model, the poses and angles I wanted to get shot and how the colour would lie on the hair naturally when it moved.

Creating a dramatic colour transformation is one of the most fulfilling experiences for a colourist. We spoke to four leading colour technicians about their love of the bold colour change.

A colour change is particularly interesting because the person is telling me they are ready to transform and become a new (or a better) version of themselves. The honour of being trusted with their new identity is powerful. How would you describe the stunning colour in this image? This is a nod to current trends and to individualism. It's a very simple technique but the placement and size of the blonde panel makes this dramatic. Along with the warm tone of the blonde and burgundy in harmony, the result is sublime. What do you have to take into account before embarking on a dramatic colour change? Condition is paramount. I will not change someone’s colour if their hair condition will be compromised in the process. Most importantly though I take into account the person in front of me. Who are they? Why are they making this change? What do they want to tell the world about themselves? Any particular technique used to accomplish this colour transformation? Precision lightening. The challenge I set myself was to complete a lightened panel, using Blond Studio from L’Oréal, around the hairline and then apply the burgundy right next to it and develop them together. In a salon environment, what tips would you offer a colourist who has been asked by a client to give them a bold new look? Remember, ‘bold’ doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone so client analysis is important — ask the right questions.

Summer 2021 / The Interview

The Interview / Summer 2021

s d r a w a g n i s s e r d r i a british h of the year 2020 n e wc o m e r Concept Hair: Tell us how it felt to be named as Newcomer of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards? Kate Drury: I’m absolutely delighted. I’m so pleased all my hard work has been recognised so early on in my career. CH: Tell us about the winning collection. KD: I wanted to create images that not only demonstrated my skills, but also captivated the viewer. I created styles that are soft and luxurious to illustrate how hair can enhance a client’s natural beauty. CH: What do you think made it a winning collection? KD: I think that one of the most important things to remember when creating looks for photoshoots is that you can only plan so much. Sometimes working with the model’s natural look and not over-complicating things can look much more striking. So, keeping it simple and having a fluid theme running through. CH: How do you plan to use your win to develop your career? KD: I’m hoping this will lead to more opportunities to work within our artistic team, and also fill me with confidence in the salon every day. CH: How did you get into hairdressing and what was the attraction? KD: I’ve always had a natural ability with hair. When I was younger, I used to spend hours playing around with my

pony’s mane and tail, learning every different type of braid, and my friends have always asked me to do their hair on nights out. However, it was only after taking my A-levels and applying to university that I realised doing hair was what I loved. CH: What were the main lessons your learned during your training? KD: One of the biggest things that has helped my confidence with transitioning from a junior to a stylist was realising that consultation is key. It took me a while to understand that it’s better to spend more time asking questions, managing clients’ expectations and truly understanding what they want, than promising the world, or guessing and having a disappointed client. This was a massive turning point for me. Another major lesson – it’s important to take your time, don’t rush for anyone! CH: What goals did you set yourself to achieve in the first few years of your career and how did you achieve them? KD: I’ve always thought it’s important to set achievable targets along the way, and so my first goals were to achieve my Levels 1 and 2, while working at the salon. CH: What do you love most about your job? KD: I love the people that I work with — we always have such a laugh. I also love my clients. Making people feel amazing and seeing the massive change in their confidence after they’ve had their hair done is a really lovely feeling.

CH: Tell us more about your role at Mode? KD: I’d like to think of myself as a Mode all-rounder. I don’t specialise in any particular aspect of hairdressing at the moment, I think it’s really important to do everything as you’re starting out. However, in the future I’d like to work towards specialising in colour. CH: What ambitions do you still have? KD: Winning Newcomer of the Year has made me more ambitious to continue with competition work. I’d love to enter Men’s Hairdresser of the Year and continue doing more work with the Mode artistic team. I’m also already enrolled into Goldwell’s Colour Creatives for 2021, so watch this space! CH: Any advice to those starting out on their hairdressing career journey? KD: Don’t be a hairdresser with bad hair! Look your best to be your best. Give people a reason to try you just from seeing how you present yourself. Part of being a good hairdresser, in my opinion, is having a great personality and being able to make people love you. It’s not all about your hairdressing ability. Work on your own personal USP, because there are millions of hairdressers that can cut a bob.

e v i s u l c In g n i s s e r Haird with Tiff J When Tiff J opened her first salon in London’s Shoreditch in 2009, she didn’t worry about the fact she was launching a major business venture at the height of a global recession, because she knew that 3thirty was going to offer something genuinely different. Concept Hair: What makes 3Thirty different to other salons? Tiff J: At 3thirty we welcome clients with every conceivable hair texture. Whether a client has straight European hair, Asian hair or Afro hair, we can look after them. Every stylist is trained in all hair types from straight to excessively curly. CH: Why were you fascinated by textured hair? TJ: I personally have a mane of textured hair, so I have always had a keen understanding of what works and what doesn’t. I was always in search of a specialist curl practitioner! I found that person in Tony Heggarty who had a salon in Old Street, London. I went to work for him and decided to really focus on how I could work and specialise in textured hair.

– but with curly hair you can have a myriad of hair types on one head. It’s about having the knowledge to think outside the box and be presented with something in your chair that really makes you want to provide the very best for them. Our clients have often cried, following our consultation merely because they feel that, for the very first time, they have met a hairdresser that truly understands their curls and style boundaries. CH:What would you say to any trainee hairdressers wanting to work with textured hair TJ: You’ve got to have the conviction to get in there and do it and learn what you can as you go along – it’s an amazing part of hairdressing and the demand is growing daily. CH:What would you say to any trainee hairdressers about how they can embrace textured hair and enjoy working with it? TJ: If you are truly interested in becoming an accomplished hairdresser with textured hair you must check out the experts like I did and work with them.

l l a r r a F a Lis

Lisa Farrall is a globally famous session stylist who for more than 20 years has worked with celebrities, music artists and TV personalities both in the U.K. and internationally. She is also an ambassador for leading colour and haircare brand, Matrix and an expert on textured hair.

Concept Hair: How did you come to be such a textured hair specialist? Lisa Farrall: It all started from not wanting to turn any clients away. I saw this happen as an assistant when I was 15. Quite simply, no one had the education to deal with textured hair. This is when I knew I didn’t ever want to be that hairstylist. So, I travelled 50 miles every Saturday to work in an Afro hair salon and I started my education right there. CH: Why do you love working with textured hair? LF: Textured hair has no limits. I love working with all hair types, but the transformative and gravity defying looks I can achieve with textured hair are outstanding.

CH: Does textured hair offer any specific challenges when working in a pressured environment? LF: Depending on the brief, you will have to make a hair piece or a wig. Unless you are working on a very basic beauty editorial the hair will need some prep no matter what. You always have to stay calm and think fast. Things change, things go wrong, and someone might change their mind at the last minute. Be prepared and have a backup or two. CH: Tell us about a specific project you have worked on recently. LF: I recently created a textured series with Matrix on L'Oréal Access to show hairdressers my signature curly colour and to also share styling techniques. It's a crazy time for everyone so it's great to take this time to educate.

CH: Any hero products for you when working with textured hair? LF: It's important to add moisture into the hair, so I shampoo with Matrix Moisture Me and condition with Moisture Me Conditioner. I tend to leave a small amount of conditioner in the hair depending on the texture. CH: Any advice to trainee hairdressers when it comes to working with heavily textured hair? LF: Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, try something new and educate yourself. No one will push you — you have to be your own cheerleader. Go to classes, watch tutorials and never stop practising — remember your mistakes make you better.

Summer 2021 / Summer Style Trends

Styles

Sam Ashcroft, a member of the creative team at award-winning London salon Brooks & Brooks, gives us the low-down on this season’s key styles.

90’S BIG BLOW-DRIES 90’s big blow-dries are getting a huge revival thanks to our gen Z clients. Bring out the round brushes and roller sets for ultra-volume looks. Clients are wanting the 90’s supermodel faceframing, layered, bouncy blow-dries - think 90’s Cindy Crawford or ‘Kaia Gerber’s mum’ as the gen Z-ers say.

TOP TIP Apply mousse to the roots of the hair and blow-dry the hairline section high but towards the face for a modern take on the 90’s look.

LAID-BACK PIXIE CUT 60’S FRINGES The need for clients to cut their own fringes during 2020 has led to a fringe movement. Cheekbone grazing with a messy bun and short and blunt fringes, are the most requested.

TOP TIP Make sure the fringe complements your client’s style - is she laid back, bohemian and beachy or is she suited and booted and likes her hair sharp and structured.

Think soft, air-dried, alluring, effortless and super-cool for this cut. 2020 taught us the ‘big chop’ is not a trend it’s a movement and we’re going to be seeing loads more pixies this season. The laid-back pixie is a sister of the shag cut — it’s layered and structured but at the same time minimal product and styling is used and relies entirely on the natural texture.

TOP TIP The refining should be done with a razor. Keep it soft, bespoke and personalised.

MY SUMMER STYLE HERO PRODUCTS Dry shampoo - perfect for adding grit and a lived-in feel to the hair.

A tong - just perfect for whatever trend life throws at you.

A root mousse - perfect for creating high-volume looks.

Natural bristle brush - for great tension and finish when doing big blow dries.

3Wide tooth comb - great for raking out big blow dries.

French Balayage a Journey Not Just a Service L’Oréal Professional Paris is building on the buzz surrounding balayage with its French balayage service.

L

’Oréal Professionnel Paris is committed to ensuring that services such as French Balayage become more than just a trend. It is their mission to ensure French Balayage becomes a recognised technique, which will bring clients back to salons time and time again to experience the stunning, naturallooking results that only a true professional can achieve. With its long heritage in haircare and colour, L’Oréal Professionnel Paris has devised a two-step technique, guaranteed to deliver naturally elegant looking results.

Introducing Metal Detox Metal Detox is a new pre-treatment service from L’Oréal Professionnel Paris featuring ground-breaking technology that will provide balayage, and other colour services, with up to 87% less breakage** and a colour result that is reliable. It has taken seven years of extensive research, involving the L’Oréal Professionnel lab team in Paris, professional hair stylists and the Ioannina University, to develop this gamechanging technology. *instrumental test before and after application on bleached hair

STEP 1 Lighten with Blond Studio using their Clay Powder • The new lightening Clay from L’Oréal Professionnel Paris allows hairdressers to lighten up to seven levels. • As the Clay provides controlled lightening, this can help hairdressers create predictable results — perfect for clients wanting a subtle change. • The Clay Powder enables an easier application, with a stretchy consistency for precise, yet effortless blending and little drip or transfer. Clay Powder is the ideal solution for hairdressing professionals of all levels.

L’Oréal Professionnel Paris now understands that copper can accumulate inside our hair fibres wash after wash. Excess copper can lead to unreliable colour results and can interfere with the oxidant during the colour process. Metal Detox works by neutralising excess copper inside the hair fibre, helping to achieve up to 87% less breakage*** but also a colour result that is more reliable. The Pre-treatment is enriched with a small moecule called Glicoamine which helps neutralise excess copper.

STEP 2 Neutralise and gloss with Dia Light. • This is L’Oréal Professionnel Paris’s perfect product for neutralising unwanted warmth • The acidic based technology restores hair radiance and closes the cuticle of the hair post-lightening* • The gel cream texture provides up to +30% more conditioned hair* With a commitment to product development and with the professional hairdresser always at the heart of everything they do, L’Oréal Professionnel Paris is committed to ensuring French Balayage becomes a major draw for every salon across the nation. French Balayage will evolve into far more than just a service — it will become a journey for the client and hairdresser, with clients visiting more regularly to maintain the beautiful results which only their hairdresser can achieve.

Tell us about the online education you offer?

Tell us about the online education you offer?

Tell us about the online education you offer?

We wanted to offer affordable education that was accessible to all levels. With BE Education we have created an online community where hairdressers can learn, connect and be mentored by the BE educators. Three words to describe BE are approachable, creative and fun, where everybody can join the gang!

Firstly, I offer free education on my social media. On IGTV and IG Live I often collaborate with other stylists and colourists, creating a look live on screen and talking viewers through the steps. I love these live sessions, they are so informative.

Currently, I'm delivering all my online education through my subscriptionbased service. Members can sign up to @jaymzmarsters.education on a month-by-month subscription to gain access to a huge pool of knowledge and techniques covering all aspects of colour and social media. Weekly live streams and classes are saved for you to watch back in your own time along with in-depth detailed posts.

BE offer’s three unique packages, which are The BE Mentorship, Colour Club and Style Squad. These packages last up to a month and attendees will be guided by the BE educators and can stay connected throughout. The BE Mentorship is a great way to start your journey. Through this programme you will be guided by art team members Marlon Hawkins and Grace Dalgleish, covering key focuses of hairdressing including cut and colour, ranging from the commercial to the creative. Plus, a guest artist will join the gang! Find out more: www.brookseducation.co.uk

Secondly, I offer education through Hair Co-Operative. This is a new platform I founded during lockdown of 2020, with the aim of offering high-quality educational sessions at an affordable cost. Costs are around £20-£30 per session and we cover cut, colour, and session work and so much more! What skills and techniques do you pass on? Throughout all my educational sessions, I make it my goal to help those watching become more confident in the skill or technique they are learning. Find out more: www.haircooperative.com

What skills and techniques do you pass on? Most of my education is based on creative colouring, but some stylists don't always realise that before you can deliver a seamless creative colour application you have to have be able to execute natural and lightening techniques. Alongside this you will learn advice on saving time and money in the salon and how to boost your online presence. Find out more: www.thewattacademy.co.uk

Summer 2021 / Business skills

ry e v o c s i D f o y Journe Brooke Evans, of Brooke Evans Ironbridge in Telford, takes us through some of the key touchpoints in a successful salon client visit.

clients love “toMany see their progress and be part of your social media

1

Firstly, our receptionist greets all clients at reception. If the client is new, or returning after a long break, after checking them in, the receptionist shows the client around the salon, explaining all they will need to know while they are with us at the salon — including where the toilets are and what the free Wifi code is.

2

When consulting, we ask the client what they currently like and dislike about their hair, and if they were brave enough what would they love to have done. This gives you a good insight of what they like and what kind of person they are.

3

We love to photograph our clients’ hair journeys — we always ask permission first. So many clients love to see their progress and to be part of your social media, especially if this is a colour change or to encourage hair growth.

4

We feel the shampoo stage should be the most relaxing part of a client’s visit. We like to take a little bit more time and attention shampooing, allowing them to fully relax with a normal hairdressing scalp massage as well as pressure point massage, just to ease any tension a client has.

The shampoo stage should be the “ most relaxing part of a client’s visit ”

32 / Concept Hair

5

Point of sale marketing material is massive in our industry, but I think if you believe in the products you are using and say why you are using them they will sell themselves. I always bring my product over to the client, and when used I pop it on the side table. If a client likes it, they will pick it up and read the label, while interacting with me. If they are not interested, they won’t do this, and then I would never pressure sell. For more info visit: www.brookeevansironbridge.com

Recline the chair, drape the client and protect the eyes with cotton wool or pads, to prevent beard clippings getting into the eyes.

Use the clippers, without a guard, in the closed position to remove length. On the right side establish a sideburn perimeter line horizontally. Remove hair from the jaw to the sideburn, through the cheek and to the neck. Change directions to adapt to the client’s growth patterns.

Use the comb to confirm the side perimeter line. With the cutting blade toward the skin, establish a vertical line at the side from the moustache to the chin. Remove hair outside of the line.

step 09

Use trimmers to go over the same areas again, cutting the hair closer to skin. Refine the outline using shorter, more precise strokes.

Use an electric shaver to create a clean-shaven look. Remove loose hair from the face and neck. Bring the client upright and check the balance.

Summer 2021 / Facial Hair Techniques

george smith face the facts

GEORGE SMITH, A BUSY STYLIST AT TONI & GUY IN SALISBURY, WILTSHIRE, HAS A PASSION FOR BARBERING. HERE HE SHARES HIS TAKE ON THE LATEST TRENDS IN FACIAL HAIR.

KEY TECHNIQUES The Lockdown Effect Many men working from home have opted to grow their facial hair – this can take some time. The recommendation I gave to my clients before lockdown was this: “If you’ve never tried it definitely give it a go. If it doesn’t work for you, looks patchy, irritates the hell out of you, use a grade 1 on a clipper and get rid of it.”

Back to the Barber I expect a lot of clients will return to barbershops up and down the UK with big lumberjack beards. What I’d say to any barbers is be ready to trim them into a cleaner shape or even a complete restyle as they’ll now have the length to play with and most likely a picture for you to replicate.

General Trends

“FOR LONGER BEARDS A DAILY COMB WILL TRAIN STUBBORN HAIRS TO GROW IN A DOWNWARD DIRECTION. THIS WILL ALLOW A MORE KEPT BEARD”

perfect lines and shapes. It’s cool for that detailed Insta image and I highly recommend it for any photoshoots you do in the future. However, for day-to-day work life, you can’t beat a clean and simple, tidy — a wellgroomed short beard or shaped stubble.

Facial Hair Care Make sure you are educating your clients on their beard. If they’ve asked you to trim it , chances are they don’t know how to care for it. The rule of thumb is the longer the beard the more care it’ll need. The shorter the beard, the more trimming it will require. I always recommend to wash it regularly. This is so important in the early stages of growth, as well as the final stage of the desired style.

“THE RULE OF THUMB IS THE LONGER THE BEARD THE MORE CARE IT’LL NEED”

In the U.S. men are going as mad as ever for beards and even using fibre sprays to get those

S u m m e r Trends From BaByliss PRO

BaByliss PRO invited three of their brand ambassadors to predict their top trends for summer 2021

Syd Hayes: “New Diana Bob”

Paul Percival: “The Shag”

Jody Taylor: “Wavy Push Back”

“I think the ‘New Diana Bob’ is going to be a big feature for 2021 - think less classic bob and more shattered edges with an undone texture. The key to making this look work is to style it well, and for that you’ll definitely need a good dryer and a good texture spray. Make sure to use a diffuser when drying the hair and then go over the hair using a large barrel wand to create the bends and shape.”

“This haircut has had its fair share of dislike and ridicule over the years. But as with all trends if someone does it well it can become fashionable again. I’m a big fan of the 70s haircut and personally I love a good mullet too! Blow dry some oil into the hair and remember you’re not looking for volume, so follow the dryer with a flat brush flat against the head. My top tip to style this out would be to use a large curling tong to create some movement around the face.”

“One benefit of lockdown was the forced experimental phase-out that hair went through. We quickly realised if long hair works or doesn’t, and for some it really does work. This wavy pushed back hair look must have length on the sides for it to work. It’s an anti-fade style with a distressed texture and worn off the face and tucked behind the ear. Product here is key here as you want controlled mess with volume throughout, so use volume mousse at the roots and blow dry in on a slow speed.”

bettertons Handle with Care

A PAIR OF SCISSORS IS PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL YOU WILL EVER BUY, SO YOU’LL WANT TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION. THE DESIGN OF THE SCISSOR HANDLES AND BLADES IS A PIVOTAL PART OF ANY PURCHASE DECISION. SCISSOR EXPERTS BETTERTONS ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.

“IT’S VITAL YOUR SCISSORS ARE COMFORTABLE FOR YOU TO USE”

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE WITH YOUR SCISSOR DESIGN How do I choose the right handle design for me? Your scissors should be with you for a long time, so it’s vital they are comfortable for you to use. Select the most suitable handle shape depending on hand size, experience and cutting techniques.

Symmetric Handle A symmetric design is the traditional style for hairdressing scissors. This gives a higher arm position when cutting.

Offset Handle Offset handles easily fit the hand so the wrist, elbow and shoulder do not tire easily when opening or closing the scissors.

Joewell New Era Offset

Finger hole

Convex Pro Blade

Regular and small sizes are available. A finger ring can be attached to reduce the size of the finger hole.

Designed to offer sharp, smooth cutting, this has the sharpest blade angle and setting. Having a thicker blade shape makes the scissor more powerful, and because the point of the blade is smaller than a hair, hairs will not fly about.

What do I need to think about when it comes to blades types? Joewell scissors are available in four blade shapes, each with their own unique qualities and benefits.

Standard Blade Joewell original standard blade is the most popular and easy to use. Incorporating a flat blade and light blade body enables us to provide a scissor, which is suitable for general use.

Convex Shape Blade Representing the latest in scissor blade technology, the Convex Shape Blade maintains soft, sharp cutting on all hair types.

Sword Blade Ideal for creating precision point cuts, all the cutting power is delivered to the very tips of these blades.

Summer 2021 / Superstar Salons

superstar salons

Could one of these salons offer the next step in your career?

Taking the next step in your exciting career may well involve working for a salon. There are thousands of fantastic salons across the UK, but what do they offer their teams and how will they help you become the best hairdresser you can be? We asked a selection of top salons and salon groups what makes them great places to work.

Room 97, Leeds and Wakefield

W

e have three salons in Leeds and Wakefield and set up our own academy five years ago. We are a tight team and many members have worked together for a long time.

ON-GOING EDUCATION We offer great education internally and externally. Having our own onsite training academy means we can offer a lot of training daily. The academy is based at one of our salons so students get an insight into what life is like for the working hairdresser. Working very closely with the L'Oréal team, the salon staff also have regular training internally and externally.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Each staff member has their own career path. These are discussed regularly to check that each goal has been completed and discuss the next steps for the rest of the journey.

MOTIVATION Everyone is motivated in different ways. Incentives are the most popular - cash, training courses or gifts. For others it’s about having a work/life balance.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

Nicki Thornton, academy director and colour specialist, Room 97.

40 / Concept Hair

Someone that is a great team worker, very articulate and willing to further their knowledge and skills. Someone that has passion and ability to inspire others.

Superstar Salons / Summer 2021

David Corbett Hairdressing, Glasgow

W

e are an independent salon with our own in-house certified training. Our young trainees are guaranteed on-thejob experience coupled with education from experienced stylists. Spending time with stylists who are actually doing the job means they get a real feel for what hairdressing is like when they qualify.

ON-GOING EDUCATION

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Not everyone who starts as an apprentice becomes a hairdresser. There are other paths they can follow, such as front of house opportunities. Some choose to specialise in colouring or education.

MOTIVATION We have regular team meetings to discuss what's happening within the business and what opportunities

lie ahead. There are numerous competitions held within the salon to promote and encourage new talent.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR Someone with the right attitude and personality. I like to remind them that as hairdressers we might be the only people a client has who tells them they are beautiful. So it's important to make them feel that way.

We support on-going education in many ways, from online learning, one-to-one attention and inviting award-winning hairdressers to our salon to share their knowledge. All NVQ level 2 stylists are given the opportunity to study for their NVQ Level 3 and their Colour Master degree.

David Corbett, owner, David Corbett Hairdressing

Ken Picton Salon, Cardiff

W

e are a 6,500 sq ft, destination salon, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over Cardiff Bay. This creates a real feel-good factor for the team and clients. I like to think the salon is a great place to work because we are all about a creative, fun environment with an award-winning team.

ON-GOING EDUCATION We are a City and Guilds training centre, so that’s the basis of our apprenticeship scheme both for our team and other salons in Wales. In terms of on-going education, we make sure we adapt to what each team member needs. Being a training centre means we often welcome guest artists and stylists to the salon which gives a great opportunity for the team to learn from a wide variety of educators.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES We traditionally always promote individuals to their strongest skill set. We are more than happy for our team to follow their chosen path, whether that’s colour, styling, bridal, or men’s hair. We want our team to love what they do so there’s no pressure for everyone to do everything.

have been on the Fellowship FAME team, gone on to work for ghd as their global head of education, and won at the British Hairdressing and Most Wanted Awards. It’s vital to me that the opportunities are always passed on to the team — I love seeing them succeed.

MOTIVATION Providing amazing opportunities is one of the best ways we motivate the team. We work with the biggest brands in hairdressing and that brings with it many amazing chances to do more. Our team members

Why ente

H

ere at Concept Hair Magazine, we are all about inspiring and motivating the next generation of hairdressing talent — and we believe that competitions are a great way to do this. We offer three competitions aimed at all levels of trainee hairdresser, from those just dipping their toes in the water at school, to fully-fledged apprentices.

STYLING

BARBERING

“Competitions are great because they give you a creative outlet early on in your career. They help you to learn what works and what doesn’t, and to see hair as part of a whole look. This gives you a good base to start refining your work and seeing what you really love and then what you don’t like too. Competitions also give you a great platform to meet others within the industry, from your peers who you compete with to the judges at the top of the industry.” Ashleigh Hodges, Creative Director, Hairdotcom Art Team

"For me, entering competitions has always been a great way to express myself, to show off creativity and to have fun with more extreme looks. However, entering competitions is a great way to educate and evaluate your own skillset. The skills you pick up on the way, whether you win or not, are invaluable to becoming a successful hairdresser. Winning is just a bonus as long as you are learning along the way.” Jake Unger, head of education, HOB Academy

You can read all about this year’s Learner of the Year competition on pages 8-13, but to sum it up in a few words — Learner of the Year is the ultimate competition for apprentices and FE hairdressing students to showcase their talents and start creating a name for themselves at the very start of their careers. Because of the Covid situation, this year’s competition was based purely on photographic entries with two rounds of judging whittling the initial 1000plus entries down to 150, and then to 48 finalists. Every month we offer great prizes to a student hairdresser who impresses us and our expert judges with a look they have created. The award, which is open to fulltime learners and apprentices, aims to celebrate the amazing work that up-and-coming talent in the industry is producing. There is a prize, usually worth £100 or more, for the winning hairdresser or barber each month. Entering couldn’t be easier. Between the 1st and 20th of the month tag us in a new photo of your best work on Instagram – tag @concepthairmag and use #ConceptHairLOTM . Our expert judging panel will choose their favourite entries and rank them in order. We will share the top entries on the @concepthairmag Instagram to allow our followers to vote. Public votes will be combined with the judges’ rankings and the winner will be announced! We can’t wait to see your work – why not start sharing now!

“Competition work for young hairstylists is so important as it not only develops your skills, but also puts you out there amongst many iconic and already established hairdressers. Winning Newcomer of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards has definitely helped my confidence and influenced the development of my own style within hairdressing.”

“Entering competitions is exciting - it sets you a deadline and a goal for a creative outlet. Not only can you express yourself and learn new skills along the way, it pushes your creative boundaries while developing your eye or attention to detail and motivates you to do your best work to represent yourself and your salon.”

Summer 2021 / Careers

Why be a Colour

Specialis Rosie Briscoe, Freelance Hairstylist, Klub Salon, Manchester

My career choice I fell in love with colour straight away! I loved the mixture of science and creativity. I don't think I ever did decide. I just became the go-to in the salon for formulations and colour problems because I love it so much.

46 / Concept Hair

My mentors

Why I specialised

I was working with Sharon Peake and Adam Bryant at the Ethos salon in Manchester when they won British Colour Technicians of the Year at the 2013 British Hairdressing Awards. They are both amazing colourists and artists. The way they think about colour and the inspiration behind their collection was always so interesting to be a part of and they both taught me so much.

I wanted to specialise in colour so I could live and breathe my passion day in, day out. I made it my mission to educate and bring an understanding to others of the correct usage of colour.

What I love most

I completed my L’Oréal Colour Degree and graduated four years ago. I then had the opportunity to audition to be a part of the L’Oréal Innovative Team — this is a year-long programme.

I love the problem solving. Give me a colour correction any day. I love a real head scratcher, when you need a pen and paper in the colour room to think about your ratio and a full salon debate about what needs to be done.

Extra education The biggest learning experience for me was the 10-day advanced course, Matrix Colour Mastery. Only when I’d finished the course, did I really feel like I was a specialist.

My hero product Matrix SoColor Sync range — it's development is super quick, it's amonia-free, with ceramides that make the hair look smooth, shiny and feel amazing!

What I love most Being in and amongst a team, working with likeminded colourists and continuously learning and developing my skills.

Extra education

Rebecca Boothby, Owner, Signature Hair

My Career Choice Within five years of qualifying, I became aware of the true potential and benefits specialising in colour had to offer me and my business.

Next, I would love to audition to win a place on the L’Oréal ID Team, which is a two-year programme. I want to always continue to learn and improve.

What is your colour product of choice and why? My favourite L’Oréal colouring product has to be the L’Oréal DIA Light family. The range delivers high shine and gloss and it’s flexibility and performance make it my trusted colouring product.

st?

Specialising is one way of progressing with a career in hairdressing, and colour is a creative path that many hairdressers choose. We met some of the UK’s top colour technicians for their insight. My mentor Sue Pemberton, a former educator at Joico, was my first ever colour mentor. I learned the art of seamlessly blending colours together even if they did not belong together.

Why I specialised I draw and paint out of salon hours, so colour is an important part of my life but also I love what hair colour does to lift a shape or style.

What I love the most

Clayde Baumann,

National Colour Director, D&J Ambrose, Pinner My career choice I decided to specialise in colour in 2012 when I started working with Darren Ambrose, at D&J Ambrose, and Wella.

Being a specialist brings its own challenges and I like that I am constantly presented with these. I also enjoy working in a team situation with a stylist. The collaborative aspect makes it more social and fun.

Extra education I completed the Wella Master Colour Expert Programme as well as two other brandspecific colour degrees. I still enjoy continuous professional development through Wella in order to stay on top of the latest colour technology.

My hero product My Wella go-to brand is Colorfresh. I like having the creative freedom to change my clients regularly without doing damage to the hair.

My advice Be sure you’re willing to dedicate all of your salon time to the speciality and make sure you’re willing to invest in yourself to do all the necessary training. Concept Hair / 47

Summer 2021 / The Backwash Experience

Salon group owner and CEO for Passion4hair, Debbie Digby offers her top tips on making the shampoo experience a joy, not a trauma!

We have a duty of care to “deliver the best services ”

I

n a client survey about the salon experience, the most popular part of the client visit was voted the shampoo experience. In the same survey, it was also the least popular part. These contrasting views show that the care and skill of the hairdresser carrying out the shampoo service will determine whether a client finds the experience relaxing or traumatic. When I was an apprentice hairdresser, I loved shampooing, and it showed.

Here are my tips for providing the best shampoo experience: MAKE SURE THE AREA IS CLEAN AND PRESENTABLE Before you escort your client to the basin, make sure it is sanitised and that the area around is tidy and prepared for the service. Ensure you have fresh towels and a gown ready. 48 / Concept Hair

ENSURE THE CLIENT IS COMFORTABLE AND RELAXED As your client takes a seat and reclines, her comfort should be top of your agenda. Your basin is likely to have adjustments for the seat and the bowl. Make sure you know how to adjust these for client comfort. You can also use cushions and a footrest to help support or to raise the height. Use a neck rest and keep asking your client how she feels. If your client is not positioned well, she may get wet or suffer pain, if she feels relaxed, she will enjoy your service. Remember if your client cannot get comfortable you always have the option to offer a forward wash.

KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS Are you comfortable? Is the water the right temperature? Do you prefer a firm or gentle massage? Each client is unique. Your stylist should help you select the right shampoo and conditioner for the best results.

BECOME A MASSAGE SPECIALIST I became the clients’ favourite apprentice by mastering a massage technique that could be adjusted for

each client’s personal preference. Some liked it gentle, others firm, but the movements were always the same. The length of time was consistent — I never cut corners. I would encourage my clients to relax and enjoy by saying: “I want you to enjoy your shampoo so please feel free to close your eyes and I will keep chat to a minimum”.

GIVE CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS While you are with the client, speak clearly and at a volume she can hear. Let her feel confident in your care. Your ability to deliver the client back to the stylist relaxed and ready will pay dividends in your career. If the client leaves you dishevelled with a wet collar, how do you think that will affect the rest of her service? We have a duty of care to deliver the best services and look after every client’s health and safety. The shampoo experience should be the most enjoyable part of the service, making the apprentice a vital part of the salon team.

Whatever “dreams you have, we’re here to help them come true

why you should become an

nhbf member!

As you set out on an exciting career in the hairdressing or barbering industry, you’ve probably got big plans for the future – maybe self-employed chair renting will be the way forward for you after you’ve gained some experience, or perhaps your ambition is to open your own business.

W

hatever dreams you have, we’re here to help them come true, says NHBF director of quality & standards Caroline Larissey. The NHBF is a member organisation for hair and beauty professionals that offers a wide range of value-for-money benefits, as well as discounts on vital business essentials. It has also provided a key role in supporting the industry throughout the pandemic. Find out more: nhbf.co.uk/coronavirus

Always there for you When you’re running your own business, either as a self-employed chair renter or the owner of a salon or barbershop, there will a lot to think about – from health & safety, tax, insurance and employment law to knowing how to turn a profit and grow your business into the future. “As an NHBF Member – which currently costs less than 80p a day – you’ll have access to our friendly membership team for help with everyday business enquiries or our free 24/7 legal helpline for any trickier issues,” says Caroline. Members also benefit from discounted insurance, free chair renting agreements, discounted health & safety toolkits, and much more.

Apprenticeships and traineeships “Apprenticeships (nhbf.co.uk/ apprentices) are a great way to join the hair and beauty industry in the UK,” says Caroline. “and in the past year, traineeships, which are free to employers, have also become increasingly popular. Traineeships in England help 16-to-24-year-olds, or 25-yearolds with an education, health and care (EHC) plan, get ready for an apprenticeship or job if they don’t yet have the appropriate skills or experience to start one.”

Summer 2021 / Fit for Learning

Sleep Well

Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Getting your eight hours of quality slumber can lower blood pressure, fight premature aging and re-energise you both physically and mentally. Here’s our top tips for getting the right amount of shut-eye.

1 2 TIP 1

Keep it regular Okay, so there’s no way you’re going to always be in bed at the same time and up with the first glimpse of sunlight, but where possible keeping to a regular sleep pattern is a great idea. This way you train your mind to shut down at a certain time and you’ll find it much easier to drift off into a restful sleep.

52 / Concept Hair

FEATURE FIT FOR LEARNING TIP 2

Avoid Blue Light

Keep those mobile phones and laptops out of the bedroom, and try and avoid using them for a good hour before you slip under the covers. Blue light from these devices tricks the brain into thinking it’s daylight, which means it produces less melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep.

3 TIP 3

Create a sleepinducing Space Try and keep all distractions out of the bedroom — no TVs, computers or general clutter. Create a space that promotes sleep and relaxation. Try infusing the air of your bedroom with essential oils such as lavender and opt for relaxing colours on the walls, such as blues, yellows and greens.

4 TIP 4

Kick the caffeine Sometimes a coffee provides the boost we need to get through the afternoon, but try not to drink caffeine later in the day. Even a coffee drank six hours before you go to bed can disturb your sleep.

5

TIP 5

Don’t panic At some point, we all experience trouble getting to sleep or waking in the middle of the night with our minds racing. The first rule is not to panic. Try some deep breathing and don’t focus on worrying thoughts.

Lauren Askew

As our January Learner of the Month, Lauren, an 18-year-old barbering apprentice from Solihull College, has bagged herself a product bundle from Indola worth £100. Lauren created her favourite look for the competition — a skin fade with a textured top. Lauren has been in the hair industry for two and a half years. She currently spends one day a week in college and the rest of the week working at a Birmingham-based barbershop. Lauren says the best advice she ever received was: “Your next haircut will be better than the last, don’t give up, you never stop learning”

Amir Razaie

Twenty-year-old Amir has been in the hairdressing industry for just over two years. He has completed his level 2 barbering and from September, plans to continue to work towards his level 3 barbering at Solihull College. As our February winner, Amir walked away with a Beretto Clipper from Wahl Professional. Amir’s journey started when his friend introduced him to barbering. “I love all of it but I especially love doing skin fades and I’m trying to learn different techniques to make it easier and look much better,” he told Concept Hair. Amir’s plans for his career and future are bright. “I’m really greedy to achieve more skills, win more competitions and gain qualifications,” he said. He also hopes to open his own barbershop one day.

Wioleta Alani

Originally from Poland, Wioleta is a 29-year-old student at Wiltshire College studying towards her Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing. Since moving to England, she has worked as a self-employed hairdresser alongside her studies at college. For her winning look, Wioleta created an avantgarde style inspired by sea coral and fishing nets. “I am really happy that people liked my entry and honoured that the judges chose it out of so many amazing hairstyles,” she said. Wioleta has enjoyed styling and dressing hair since she was a child and that evolved into colouring and experimenting with different hairstyles.
