California Balayage

California Balayage is taking lived-in hair right back to soft, subtle and low contrast, achieved using a freehand painting techniques. The trick to the California Balayage look is not to lift the hair too light and embrace warm undertones rather than over-neutralising with ashy toners. Try adding warm or neutral tones in with ash to create the perfect honey blonde finish.

I pre-lightened hair to a level 10, and cooled it down with purple shampoo. For blues, we don’t want any yellow undertones in the hair as the yellow and blue will mix and turn the hair colour green.

Next, I coloured the hair using Pulp Riot semi-permanent colours with a darker blue on the root area for that root shadow vibe.

I then blended down into a lighter more pastel blue. Pulp Riot colours fade true to tone, so it will gradually become more pastel with every wash, eventually returning back to blonde.
