From Pivot Point LAB, a bespoke VTCT/ iTEC learning resource, this step-by-step takes you through the procedures for creating beautiful, defined and layered curls, using a shingling technique.

Prepare the hair for styling with a horseshoe-shaped fringe section and centre vertical section.

Apply curl-defining product to the hair, starting at the nape:

▶ Release a 5cm horizontal parting across the nape.

▶ Saturate the hair with water

▶ Comb water through the section

▶ Rub hands together to evenly spread the product across the palms.

▶ Apply the product, holding hair with tension while gliding hands from base to ends

▶ Comb through for even distribution.

Separate small sections within the parting and glide the product along the strand. Use hand-over-hand movement and stretch the hair while smoothing the cuticle and texture pattern. Release the strand, allowing the curls to form naturally.

Work through the remainder of the section, using the same technique. To prevent frizz, it is important not to disturb the curls once they are smoothed and released.

Step 07

Work towards the top of the head, maintaining consistent 5cm horizontal partings and generous amounts of water followed by the product.

Note: The hair must be damp when the product is applied.

Step 08

At the front hairline, direct and place the hair where the client wants to wear it for the final look. Take vertical subsections, applying water and products using the same techniques.

Step 09

Diffuse-dry the hair without disturbing the curl. As hair dries, curls form into their natural texture and are very defined.
