MEET THE RUNNER UP

On 21st April, after six close-run regional finals and some incredible demonstrations of plumbing ability at the grand final, Ruben Duggan from Coleg Y Cymoedd's Ystrad Mynach Campus, was announced as our HIP Learner of the Year 2022. We caught up with him to ask what winning the competition meant to him.

HIP: How did it feel to be announced as runner up? Elliot Julian: It's good, but it's bittersweet. I’d love to be the winner, but Ruben deserved it, so I'm happy. HIP: How did you find the competition? EJ: I was surprised how hard it was. You arrive in the morning, and you're given a sheet that you’ve got to work off - it takes a minute or two to get your head around it. It's a good challenge though. HIP: What was your favourite part of the competition? EJ: All the prizes were pretty good! HIP: Speaking of the prizes, what's your favourite thing you've won? EJ: I got an Apple Watch and during the regional heats I won a laser level, which was probably the thing I've used most.

ELLIOT JULIAN CORNWALL COLLEGE, ST AUSTELL

HIP: Looking back towards the start of the competition, would you say you discovered any new skills? EJ: Definitely! Time management and the order that you work in to work efficiently. The competition puts you in such a high-pressure situation and when you realise you can perform under that kind of pressure, it’s a confidence boost for when you're working. HIP: How will this competition help you and your career going forward? EJ: It's something that I'm going to put on my CV. It's a well-known competition so I'm sure it will help me in the future with my career. HIP: What would you say to someone who might be thinking of entering the competition next year? EJ: Go for it. It's definitely worth it.

HIP: What was your favourite part of the final test?

Ruben Duggan: Surprising! It was a really big surprise! I work for my dad, and he hasn’t stopped telling all his customers and merchants!

RD: Probably the pipe bending. I really like pipe bending!

HIP: How did you find the competition? RD: It was really challenging. It wasn't easy and nothing like anything I've done before. I was being challenged and tested on all my skills.

HIP: What do you think of all the prizes that you've just come away with? RD: I think the prizes are fantastic. It’s quite overwhelming! I knew I’d win some stuff but not to the extent of what I received. HIP: Have you learned anything new over the competition? RD: Definitely! The competition has helped build confidence in myself and confidence in my work. My job is usually quite relaxed, so I learned to work under pressure. It surprised me how well I

RD: I think it’s a massive thing to put on your CV. I think it will impress any of the big manufacturers and it’s given me confidence so it’s a big, big win. HIP: What would you say to students who are thinking about entering the competition next year? RD: Definitely get in it! PLUMBER PROFILE | HIP

THE GAS LASS, LEAH JOHNSON When Leah Johnson dropped out of Art College she had no idea what she wanted to do next. A chance advert in a national newspaper, and a mum who spotted an opportunity, lead to a long career in the trade!

Q

HIP MAGAZINE: Why did you decide on the plumbing trade?

LJ: I would say to new apprentices to stick at it, no matter how difficult it may seem at times. It will be worth it in the end.

Leah Johnson: British Gas were doing a massive national recruitment drive. My mum saw their advert in the paper, cut it out and suggested I apply. That was 20 years ago!

Q

HIP: What tool could you not live without?

HIP: Did you start off by doing an apprenticeship?

Q

HIP: What tips would you give for setting up a business?

Q

HIP: Which bit of new technology are you most interested in?

Q

HIP: What’s your experience of being female in a male-dominated trade?

Q

HIP: Who has been the biggest influence on your career and why?

Q

LJ: Yes I did an apprenticeship with British Gas. I was lucky as it was quite well paid and I gained a lot of valuable knowledge.

Q

HIP: What’s the best piece of advice you would give to current apprentices?

LJ: My Knipex cobras and my Bahco adjustable spanner.

Q

HIP: How do you use social media for your business?

LJ: I use Facebook for my business and I actually get most of my work through my business page. I have great reviews and I’m constantly being recommended through local community Facebook pages.

LJ: Get out there and start networking. And have a good work-life balance. I work more hours in the winter in order to have plenty of time off in the summer to travel the south coast in my campervan.

LJ: I’m rubbish with technology!

LJ: My experience has been rewarding. I have never been made to feel any different from the guys I’ve worked with. I think these days it is much more common to see female tradeswomen and some people actually prefer to have us working in their homes.

LJ: All the brilliant guys I’ve worked with and learned from – right from day one.

This spanner will do the majority of 15mm & 22mm nuts. It’s solidly built, and provides good leverage when trying to undo tight or seized nuts. Very good value for money and I use it pretty much daily.

HIP | INHIBITORS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

THINK RADIATORS, THINK INHIBITORS Dosing heating systems with inhibitor is crucial for protecting against corrosion. ADEY’s Colin Yearp explains why inhibitor should be at the forefront of your mind at every install, every service and every repair to keep radiators working optimally. *Based on independent research commissioned by ADEY.

WHAT IS INHIBITOR?

Inhibitor is a chemical which creates a protective layer inside radiators, to: ■ keep corrosion at bay ■ lubricate components ■ protect against limescale build-up

HOW DO I CHECK FOR INHIBITOR?

A water test is essential in establishing which chemicals to dose a system with. ADEY ProCheck® produces instant lab-style results on a smartphone, giving a clearer picture of what is going on in the system.

WHEN SHOULD I USE INHIBITOR?

“CHECKING INHIBITOR KEEPS THE SYSTEM WORKING EFFICIENTLY, PROTECTS AGAINST CORROSION AND HELPS REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS”

14

When removing or replacing a radiator, carrying out a full or partial drain down, or a system flush, the levels of inhibitor will dramatically reduce. It’s therefore important to check and maintain inhibitor levels at every installation, every service, and every repair or replacement.

| SUMMER 2022 > WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK

WHY SHOULD I USE INHIBITOR?

Checking inhibitor keeps the system working efficiently, protects against corrosion and helps reduce carbon emissions by up to 7%*. It is also required to adhere to BS7593:2019, Benchmark and Part L of the Building Regulations.

HOW MUCH INHIBITOR SHOULD I USE?

ADEY’s MC1+ Protector is a highly concentrated formula and a 500ml bottle will treat up to 125 litres of water in a system. 98% of UK heating systems use less than 125 litres, so one bottle is all you need in most cases.

TOP TIP

Keep a couple of bottles of inhibitor in your kit so you don’t have to make a new customer appointment or an extra trip to pick up the product.

HIP | FEATURE: DRINKING WATER TREATMENT

WHAT ARE YOU DRINKING? Water within a fitting can become a dangerous fluid. So, if installing direct to the mains water supply, do not dwell on just the 'how to' but think 'should you'. PROTECTING THE QUALITY OF THE MAINS WATER SUPPLY

The quality of water can change as it makes its way through the plumbing system of any premises. Temperature changes or material and substances can have a detrimental effect on the water. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 use ‘Fluid Category of Risk’ to assess any potential effect to the quality of water.

FLUID CATEGORY OF RISK

To protect water supplies you should know that the five fluid risks are:

1 2 3 4 5

No risk - wholesome water supplied by the water company Aesthetic change to the quality - hot water or domestic saltsoftened water Slight health hazard – a common disinfectant (eg chlorine) Significant health hazard – chemicals and pesticides Serious health hazard – animal or human waste.

16

“CONTAMINANTS DO NOT ALWAYS PRESENT THEMSELVES IN A WAY THAT WARNS YOU OF IMPENDING DANGER”

| SUMMER 2022 > WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK

FEATURE: DRINKING WATER TREATMENT | HIP

Drinking water, Fluid Category 1, is wholesome water complying with the requirements made under section 67 of the Water Industry Act 1991/ the Water Supply (Water Quality) (Scotland) Regulations 1990 and any amendment.

GOING GREEN CAN BE MEAN!

Water efficiency innovations have increased the use of reclaimed water or other sources of supply. Intended for use where drinking water is not required, the types of system available are:

■ Rainwater harvesting – water from rainwater drain pipes ■ Grey water – reclaimed basin and bath water ■ Black water – reclaimed toilet water. All require a backup supply from mains water, which must be protected with an appropriate air gap, suitable for a fluid category 5 risk.

THE SILENT ASSASSIN Do you know which glass contains E.coli?

A

B

C

No! That’s because contaminants don’t always present themselves in a way that warns you of impending danger. E.coli is a microscopic bacteria commonly found in human and animal intestines. It could lurk unnoticed if allowed to enter the water supply through an unprotected cross connection. Water that could contain E.coli is a fluid category 5 risk.

WATCH OUT!

A water company inspection identified E.coli at a premises. The owner was prosecuted for installing a fitting without adequate backflow prevention and fined £400 and costs of £5000 awarded.

“TEMPERATURE CHANGES, OR MATERIAL AND SUBSTANCES, CAN HAVE A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON WATER”

Pipework and tap outlets containing water from these sources must be labelled and distinguishable as they could be located next to the mains water supply. You can read case studies of real-life examples of cross connections on the Water Regs UK website by scanning the QR code below.

SCAN THE QR CODE

DID YOU KNOW?

■ Backflow prevention devices must be suitable for the risk ■ Double-check valves are only suitable up to fluid 3 risk ■ Only an appropriately-sized air gap protects against fluid 5 risk.

HIP | FEMALE TRADE SKILLS COMPETITION

FEMALE TRADE SKILLS COMPETITION O

WINNER

In support of International Women's Day, HIP teamed up with ESG to run an all-female skills competition at Lewisham College. The competitors ranged from level 1 to apprentices. rganised by Bob Noseda, on behalf of ESG, the day comprised of a large copper frame installation, pipe bending and press fit joints. Here's what some of the judges and the winner, Gracie Symon, had to say.

BECKY BATES @BBPLUMB1NG

What a way to celebrate International Women’s Day! Surrounded by six incredibly talented young ladies, it was an inspiration to watch. The girls showed discipline, aptitude, and willingness to learn. Competitions like this are important to highlight that regardless of gender a trade skill such as plumbing can be an interesting, engaging and fulfilling career.

JERRY WHITELEY CIPHE, HEAD JUDGE

The competition showcased exceptional work from everyone, even those who had only been doing their learning for the past few months. One person wasn’t on a plumbing course, but a multi-skills course, which made her involvement even more outstanding. Women can do plumbing and heating - yes, it’s hard and dirty work, but thoroughly rewarding in many ways. And you can have longevity in a career that will take you where you never thought you’d go.

GRACIE SYMON CITY COLLEGE, NORWICH

“FEWER THAN 10% OF THE UK'S ENGINEERS ARE WOMEN - THE LOWEST PERCENTAGE IN EUROPE” Statistics from the Institute of Engineering and Technology

ZOË TANNER

MD, SNG PUBLISHING

HIP was thrilled to support the all-female trade skills competition. We believe competitions are key for building confidence and developing skills. Providing platforms to showcase trade talent is essential and we are committed to supporting and encouraging plumbing learners to take part in as many competitions and experience as many opportunities as possible.

I was nervous to enter the competition but once I arrived everyone was friendly, and I relaxed. It was great to meet and talk with the other girls learning the same trade as me and inspiring to talk to people who have developed their career in the industry. Overall, just turning up to the competition was a confidence boost – winning it was a bonus!

PRODUCT TO FIT & FORGET

Keith Dyson

Keith Dyson, National Technical Sales Manager at Hansgrohe UK, highlights three things to look for in bathroom products to help you ‘fit and forget’, reduce emergency callouts, and protect your professional reputation.

1

IS IT INSTALLER-FRIENDLY?

Some products look good in a showroom but are tricky to fit and make the job look messy. A product designed to be fitted easily guarantees a slicker, more professional look for a job. There are differences between brands in terms of fitting showers and taps, and there can be a different valve for each type of control panel. When you’re first starting out this can get confusing! That’s why Hansgrohe developed the iBox universal. The iBox is a single point of installation for most shower valves, from fully thermostatic to manual versions. Its circular design makes the iBox virtually impossible to fit incorrectly.

2

CAN IT BE REPLACED EASILY?

HAS IT BEEN PROPERLY TESTED?

You may have noticed that manufacturers offer different guarantees. This can make it difficult to establish what products are going to last, and which aspects of the product are covered. For reassurance, look out for guarantees covering every part of the product.

We ‘over-test’ to ensure robustness of all our showers and taps. In the UK, three bar working pressure tends to be the average water pressure but Hansgrohe products are all tested to sixteen bar as standard. Everything is tested with water or air to get as close to the bathroom experience as possible.

Unlike other brands, Hansgrohe manufactures every aspect of its products, including the mixer cartridges, so the whole product is guaranteed by a fiveyear manufacturer’s warranty. A spare parts guarantee is also upheld even after the product is discontinued – for up to 15 years – giving complete peace of mind.

“OUR WHOLE PRODUCT IS GUARANTEED BY A FIVE-YEAR MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY”

WHO CARES ABOUT WATER?

“SPOTTING AND REPAIRING A LEAKY LOO CAN BE VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD”

We do not have an endless supply of water - it is an increasingly vulnerable natural resource, even in the UK. We spoke to the Bathroom Manufacturers Association about how we can help make a difference to water consumption in the bathroom. T H R E E

K E Y

F A C T S :

AROUND 250,000 NEW HOUSES ARE BUILT EVERY YEAR, AND THEY ALL NEED A CLEAN AND RELIABLE SUPPLY OF FRESH WATER

THE UK’S GROWING POPULATION AND DRYER SUMMERS MEAN WATER SUPPLIES ARE BEING STRETCHED

TOP TIP

A LEAKY LOO!

■ Shorter showers - put on a 4-minute song and try to shower before the song ends

Swot up on leaky loos - 1 in 25 households have water constantly trickling from the cistern down the pan in the toilet. Just one toilet could waste up to 400 litres a day, the equivalent to five baths. The leaks are simple to spot and repair. Check out these videos for more information:

S C A N IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM:

CURRENTLY, IN ENGLAND WE EACH USE AN AVERAGE OF 140 LITRES OF WATER A DAY. THIS NEEDS TO DECREASE TO AROUND 110 LITRES TO BE SUSTAINABLE

“ULTIMATELY, LIKE MOST CAREERS, IT’S DOWN TO YOU AND THE EFFORT YOU PUT IN”

Lee Elgy

EVERY DAY’S A SCHOOL DAY!

RESEARCH

You’re about to successfully complete your college course or apprenticeship. So, what happens next? This really depends on you - what do you want? Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? We spoke to Lee Elgy from Uxbridge College to ask for his advice.

CLASSMATES

Look around your class. Your classmates could be a very useful tool after leaving training, they could even be a future business partner!

SOCIAL MEDIA

Join quality plumbing and heating groups on social media. There’s great advice out there but do your research as not all of it is helpful and some members can be ruthless!

I always research before visiting a customer. I’ll ask them to send me a photo of the issue and then I’ll do some research beforehand. Not only does it make me feel more confident, but the customer feels at ease too.

SPECIALISE

Plumbing is a broad subject, so you could specialise in one area, for example renewables. Targeting and becoming a specialist is useful as it allows you to gain in-depth knowledge of that one subject – and you’ll only need the tools for that area of work so it can save you money!

MANUFACTURERS

Most, if not all, manufacturers have a technical department. Use them.

YOUTUBE

You’ll find lots of useful information on YouTube, as well as manufacturers with their own channels. You could also start your own channel, as being new to the industry you could give a unique perspective of how things really are.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING | HIP

GOLD MEDAL HEATING FOR OLYMPIC CHAMPION When Great British athlete and track legend Sally Gunnell wanted to bring her home up to an Olympic standard, she chose to work with Ryan Faint of FMS Contractors and Polypipe to install underfloor heating across the property. We’ve got their tips for a successful collaboration.

TIP 1

TIP 2

TIP 3

AGREE A PLAN WITH YOUR CUSTOMER

MANAGE THE INSTALL

CONSIDER THE END-USER EXPERIENCE

Ryan worked with Sally to discuss the project requirements to find the products that would offer the best fit. They chose Polypipe’s Overlay Plus® system as it provided the most efficient heat output with minimal disruption to the overall renovation project during installation.

Ryan installed the Overlay Plus® directly over the existing solid floor. The light-in-weight boards can cover large floor spaces and can be easily cut to shape with a blade – meaning they are quick to install without need for specialist or heavy-duty tools.

The underfloor heating system is also efficient and unobtrusive, so was the ideal long-term solution.

The boards have a dense insulation core and an aluminium lining which increases the product’s heat output and, at only 18mm thick, they add minimal height to the finished floor.

To complete the installation, the Gunnell’s chose to pair their Overlay Plus® system with Polypipe’s Smart Controls which include geolocation capability. This allows the family to choose and set their preferred temperature for each room in the house in time for them to arrive home.

Sally said: “We chose Polypipe because we wanted something that was reliable and longstanding as we plan to be in this house for the next 2030 years.”

Ryan Faint, who completed the installation, said: “Polypipe Underfloor Heating is easy to use, well-designed and is a recognised, premium brand ideal for both new-build and refurb projects.”

Sally added: “Having underfloor heating will really change the whole outlook of the house, it’s made it more modern than it ever was.”

HIP | LIFE SKILLS

FINANCIAL HEALTH CHECK Taking control of your finances can make a big difference to your life, your mental health – and your future. Here are some money management ideas for starting habits you’ll want to keep.

INCOMING/OUTGOING

■ Spend some time working out what you have coming in and going out ■ Once you know where your money is going you can spot areas where you could make savings. There are budgeting apps that break down your spending – check if your bank offers a spending tracker, too. ■ Check your bank account daily. It’s a great way to stay on top of what you’re spending.

SPEND LESS

Little expenses add up – that daily £2 drink and crisps could cost more than £700 a year. By making a small change (buy your crisps and drinks at the supermarket in bulk and take them with you each day) you’ll be able to save the difference.

LIFE SKILLS | HIP

GOOD MONEY HABITS

“YOU DON’T NEED TO SAVE A HUGE AMOUNT TO MAKE IT WORTHWHILE. GETTING INTO THE SAVINGS HABIT NOW IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK AND CAN HAVE A MASSIVE IMPACT ON YOUR FUTURE FINANCIAL HEALTH”

Even with essential purchases always check you’re getting the best deal: ■ SHOP AROUND Use a comparison website ■ DON’T IMPULSE BUY Ask yourself, do I need this or just want it? Can I afford it? ■ BEWARE OF SPECIAL OFFERS Never buy something you don’t need just because it’s on offer.

DEAL WITH DEBTS

Don’t ignore debts - work out exactly what you owe and make a plan. Your bank account provider will have a financial advisor who can help you. If you’re really worried, speak to your personal tutor at college and they’ll be able to help you find some support.

TOP TIP

Print off your last bank statement and highlight all the non-essential items. Can you remember what you bought and why? Did you need it? How much would you have saved if you didn’t buy those highlighted things?

START TO SAVE!

Getting into the savings habit now can have a massive impact on your future finances: ■ OPEN AN ACCOUNT Comparison sites can help you choose the right savings account ■ NAME YOUR ACCOUNT Most providers allow you to label your account with a nickname, such as ‘tools/car/house’. This will help keep you focussed ■ SET A GOAL What are you saving for? How much would you like to save? What can you afford to put away each week? How long do you need to save that amount for to reach your goal? ■ START SAVING Make the first payment from your next salary. Don’t put it off, start straight away! It doesn’t have to be a huge amount – remember that daily £2 drink and crisps that saved you £700 a year! ■ SET UP A STANDING ORDER You could set up an automatic payment each month, with the money being withdrawn just after pay day so you’re not tempted to spend it later in the month.
