This year we celebrated ten years of the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year competition! Woop! Woop! Huge congrats to every student who took part, you should all be extremely proud of yourselves for representing your colleges and getting this far at such an early stage in your careers. Go you! The winner managed to pocket £5K worth of kit! Nice one Ben! If you didn’t take part this year, don’t be disheartened, why not get practising and enter next year’s competition. SPARKS-MAGAZINE.CO.UK ARE YOU BEING PAID ENOUGH? The National Minimum Wage and National Living Wages increased on 1st April. Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate of the National Minimum Wage if they are either under 19, or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship. Apprentices over 19 who have completed the first year of their apprenticeship are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age. As of 1st April, the minimum apprentice hourly wage went up from £3.70 to £3.90. For 18 to 20-year-olds, the minimum is £6.15, £7.70 for 21 to 24-year-olds and £8.21 for 25-year-olds and over. The wages go up each year with a view to keeping pay proportionate to inflation.

FIRST APPRENTICES BLAZE A TRAIL FOR NEW STANDARD The first set of candidates undertaking the new Fire, Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) Apprenticeship Trailblazer have successfully passed their end-point assessment. The successful candidates undertook the final part of their apprenticeship at the Banham Academy in London - the first end-point assessment centre of its kind delivering the FESS standard. Former Fire and Security Association Chair Pat Allen said: “It has been a long but very worthwhile journey now that we have an apprenticeship written by employers to meet their requirements for the workforce of the future. This standard encompasses a high level of comprehensive training not seen before in the fire and security systems sector.”

SURVEY SHOWS TRADESPEOPLE PREFER BUYING IN MERCHANTS THAN ONLINE Despite the general increase in online sales, recent research has highlighted that tradespeople still prefer more traditional methods of buying equipment. Research by in-vehicle secure storage brand Van Vault covered a number of trades, including builders, electricians, plumbers and carpenters. It showed that when buying secure storage solutions for their van, the preferred choice is to purchase in-store. According to latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, online sales in February were up 9.4% yearon-year, currently running at 17.6% (worth £1.19 billion). Despite this, the study of 300 tradespeople revealed that merchants are going against the current retail grain, with stores being the first choice, rather than online.

Tottenham Hotspur’s stunning new stadium was officially opened in April – and Schneider Electric had a big role to play. The £1 billion, 62,062-seater stadium is the largest football ground in London. Schneider Electric is the Official Stadium Energy Management Supplier for the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will distribute all power supply to the stadium and integrate key systems. David Hall, VP Power Systems, Schneider Electric UK & Ireland, said: “This state-of-art stadium is a prime example of how the stresses associated with hosting and attending live events can be alleviated through digitisation and automation. “The venue boasts a next-generation customer experience for sports fans, visitors and the wider community that can only be achieved with the latest technology.”

SUPER ROD PRY IS “POCKET-SIZED HERO” FOR INSTALLERS Super Rod has launched an innovative new pry tool for trade professionals to give easy access to fuse carriers and ensure safer electrical isolation while working on appliances. The Super Rod Pry is a patented tool which has an angled pry tip that can easily access and remove fuses from fused spur carriers located in hard to reach locations. BEN KIDNER After seven heats, a two-day final and a lot of incredible electrical work, the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2019 competition is finally over. Ben Kidner, 19, is a third-year apprentice at Bridgwater and Taunton College, and he came out top at the Grand Final! SPARKS: What advice would you give to those entering next year?

“I’ll definitely believe in myself more!”

Ben: Definitely take it up, it’s a big confidence booster and I’ve seen the results. I’ve seen the improvements since day one, especially with the extra hours you do practicing.

WINNER SPARKS Magazine: Congratulations Ben! How do you feel? Ben Kidner: Over the moon! It’s a real confidence boost, especially considering I was the best runner-up rather than a regional winner. I was the underdog! SPARKS: What’s your favourite thing about the industry? Ben: It’s the best trade out there. You can progress onto so many other things. SPARKS: What about your least favourite thing? Ben: When you’re chasing all day. I prefer second fixing, and turning it all on and seeing what you’ve done, you get this sense of achievement.

SPARKS: Where do you see yourself in five years? Ben: Ideally with my own company. Once you officially get qualified, you’re not fully ready – it takes years to know what you’re doing, so I’ll see what the future holds. SPARKS: Has taking part in this competition changed how you feel about your future? Ben: Yeah, it makes me happier, when I look round and see what I’ve done, it makes me feel like I’m better than I think I am. I’ll definitely believe in myself more!

Chris Davenport, who is studying Level 3 at Farnborough College of Technology, was the 2019 Apprentice of the Year runner up. We caught up with him about why he loves the industry and his future plans… SPARKS: Why did you decide that electrical is for you? Chris: I’ve always been tinkering with electronics, and I thought the best way to progress my career is to go with electrics and move on from there. SPARKS: Where do you see yourself in five years? Chris I’d love to be working at a theme park, working on the rides, doing electrics there, mixing it up a bit.

SPARKS: Has taking part in SPARKS Apprentice of the Year changed how you feel about the future? Chris: I’ve actually grown to be fond of conduit, I used to hate it! SPARKS Magazine: What’s your favourite thing about the electrical industry? Chris Davenport: It has to be lighting, when you finish a job and it lights up and it looks amazing. You get the reward of your work, knowing you’ve created something that makes a difference.

Ben: I’d like to be set up on my own, travelling around working in different places, maybe different countries!

Will: It’s practical and it takes a bit of thinking, it just suits me really!

Zack: When I was younger, there was a fault on something in our house. An electrician came round and I was intrigued by it! Then we did it in school and I started enjoying it.

SPARKS: Has taking part in the SPARKS competition changed how you feel about the future? Ben: One hundred per cent, yeah, before I never would have done anything like this. But when you get people behind you, pushing you into it, it helps open your eyes to what you can achieve.

SPARKS: Has taking part in the SPARKS competition changed how you feel about the future? Will: It’s given me a bit of confidence!

Elliott: It’s electric! Just kidding… it’s clean, unless you’re in the attic. People like you, it feels good when you say, “I’m an electrician”… not that I’ve said it yet!

Bradley: Maybe starting to look at working away. When I qualify I want to stay with my company for a bit and then go and travel and see what else is out there.

SPARKS: Has taking part in the SPARKS competition changed how you feel about the future?

Elliott: Yeah, you’ve got to think more about the job you’re doing at the competition.

Bradley: I’ll be a lot more relaxed when it comes to doing my AM2, because it won’t be a shock to the system going in, building something and having someone mark you.

THROUGH

THE KEYH LE Tameside College’s construction department offers a wide range of courses at all levels across construction including brickwork, ground craft operations, carpentry & joinery, electrical installations, fitted interiors, painting & decorating and plumbing & heating. Tameside College, including the construction department, received an Ofsted ‘Good’ rating in 2018, further adding to its reputation with sector employers and students. The focus on growth within the construction industry, combined with excellent employer relations has led to record recruitment in 2018/19. Plans for a state-of-theart construction centre in 2021 will further enhance the college’s position as a leading training provider in Greater Manchester.

The electrical team consists of six members of staff who cover all courses. Every student receives upto-date industry standard training. During the full-time course, the construction department hosts an annual ‘Pathway to Construction’ day, which consists of an internal competition, with students competing from all areas for various prizes. During this day, all employers associated with the college’s various departments attend the event, take part in judging, have a look around and speak to the students and staff.

Tameside’s construction department has a partnership with the Cross Construction Apprenticeship Taskforce, who support the event and fund placements and apprenticeships directly from the ‘Pathway to Construction’ day. This has led to a very successful conversion rate from full-time learners to apprenticeships. This all adds to the excitement of studying at Tameside College and in 2021 the students will be studying in a £9 million purposemade, state-of-the-art Construction Skills Centre.

In addition to these, each class has a ‘virtual classroom’ online, where all content for the technical side of the course and the learning journey is located.

The virtual classroom has had a major impact on the ‘pass first time’ approach to the technical side of the qualifications, as well as aiding and reinforcing the practical elements of the courses on offer.

THE ENERGY FUTURE IS ELECTRIC

Paul Reeve CEnv, Director of Business at ECA, tells us how energy targets are creating the need for an electric future. Recently, the Government’s Committee on Climate Change recommended that from 2025, new homes should not be connected to gas, to reduce domestic carbon emissions. The CCC doesn’t shy away from pushing the Government towards a low carbon future, but it will be reaching for the tin hats since this would mean the end of gas boilers and cookers. The CCC is really underlining that the UK’s energy future is increasingly electric. > TIME TO DECARBONISE According to popular site MyGridGB, generating a kilowatt hour of electricity in the UK in 2007 typically churned out 510g of CO2. By 2018, this figure had nearly halved to 265g. Yet, even with huge economic uncertainty ahead, the UK government is working to a 2030 ‘super-target’ of 100g per kWh. To get there, we will need changes in three key areas of UK activity, all of which rely strongly on electrical energy.

Electrical energy will need to be ‘decarbonised’ more, which means moving from gas to renewables, along with increased energy storage and smarter grid systems, while keeping our nuclear generation capacity going. We will also need a less carbonintensive transport system. Despite the hype, the UK is still in the early phase of electric cars. In 2018, 6% of UK car registrations were

electric or hybrid, but the scope for electrical vehicles and a supporting infrastructure is huge. The third move is ramping up energy efficiency, the most costeffective way to reduce emissions and operational costs. LED lighting – a key reason why the UK has reduced its overall energy usage – shows that electrical technology, and not just stacks of insulation, can have a major role in achieving carbon reductions. Even when considering alternative fuels such as hydrogen, the commercial route to a hydrogen economy will rely on electrolysis, driven by cheap renewable energy. Visit: www.eca.co.uk

CONFIDENT LOOP IMPEDANCE

Peter Wade of Megger talks about the latest developments in loop impedance testing.

as little as eight seconds, compared with the customary 15 seconds.

As an electrician, you’ve almost certainly carried out a non-trip loop impedance test which produced a result that didn’t look right. Repeat the test and often you’ll get a different result; repeat it again and you may get a third different result! This is confusing and wastes time. Usually, these uncertain results are due to electrical noise or high levels of harmonics. One possible solution is to link out the RCD protection and carry out a high current loop test. This is not generally acceptable, however, as faults can be introduced during reconnection after testing and additional safety precautions are required. Fortunately, there’s now a better way. A multifunction installation tester (MFT) has been developed that provides dependable non-trip loop testing on “difficult” circuits and also saves time on unproblematic circuits.

Because non-trip loop tests can be influenced by noise, conventional testers make multiple measurements and display the average of the results. Instead of simply calculating an average, the new MFT uses modified hardware and a unique algorithm that considers noise and harmonics, delivering dependable results even in difficult conditions. > CONFIDENCE DISPLAY The new MFT has a built-in confidence display. When a loop test is initiated, this shows a broad arc. As the instrument homes in on a dependable result, the width of the arc decreases until it is just a single dot. On quiet circuits, getting a highconfidence “single dot” result takes

On noisy circuits, the confidence arc takes longer to diminish to a single dot and if the circuit is very noisy, the arc may open out again before shrinking to the dot. Nevertheless, you still save time because the result is “right first time”! Non-trip loop impedance testing has moved on! The old problem of strange and varying results has been solved with an innovative instrument that saves time for its users whether the circuit under test is noisy or quiet.

BUSINESS LUKE SKILLS: WICHARD Luke Wichard is the owner of My Trusted Electrician, his own electrical business that operates throughout South London. He also runs a YouTube channel under the same name where he shares his day-to-day work and electrical tips. In this two-part interview, we talk to Luke about the ins and outs of running an electrical business.

Luke Wichard: My Trusted Electrician is an open book. I wanted to grow the company from nothing and produce great content, tips and ethics for both customers and selfemployed electricians. SPARKS: How did you fund starting up your business? LW: I had no funding. My girlfriend sold her car for £700. I gave her my car and spent the £700 on a second-hand Renault Kangoo. At the time I was fortunate to work for a company with flexible hours. I started work very early and finished at noon. I used my afternoons, evenings and weekends to work for a local builder. The hours were a killer. The first job paid for our house bills and personal expenses. The second job funded the tools and materials I needed to start my business. SPARKS: What are your top tips for establishing your business in your community and getting jobs? LW: Decide who you want to work for. If you want to work for builders, send them pictures of your work and your day rate. If you want letting agents, ask in branches. Provide them with your documentation (copy of liability cover, DBS certificate, etc.). If you want homeowners, advertise where they will see it. Don’t sit around doing nothing.

SPARKS: How do you retain customers? LW: Promise 100% and give 110%. There are great things you can do for your customer that don’t cost anything, such as providing information. If you’re carrying out a quote for a new consumer unit, why not print off some information about the importance of a non-combustible amendment 3 board for the potential customer? SPARKS: What are your best tips for pricing jobs properly? LW: Don’t ask what everyone else is charging! Don’t be a sheep! You know how much you need to earn and roughly how long the job will take. Don’t be scared that the customer will say “no”. Price it as a job worth doing. SPARKS: Do you have any employees? LW: At the moment, I don’t. I’m trying something new. It’s a bit risky and it’s safer to try it alone. I have lots of electrician friends in a similar predicament. If one of us acquires a large job, we help each other out.

WARNING! IS YOUR ON-SITE GUIDE GENUINE? The IET has become aware that there are a number of fake copies of the On-Site Guide to BS 7671:2018 in circulation, many of which have been found by students studying at colleges around the country.

IET’s Student’s Guide to the IET Wiring Regulations has first-hand experience of this problem occurring:

Fake versions of the On-Site Guide, IET Wiring Regulations and other books that have been identified aren’t just exact copies of the originals. They often contain mistakes that can potentially have catastrophic consequences if the fake guidance is followed. > RISKS TO STUDENTS? Students studying BS 7671 also need to consider the effect that the wrong information could have if followed in their course-work or exams.
