rr me hearty, here at Snippetz, we be gettin’ ready for International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Sept. 19. We be bettin’ ye thought it would ne’er be here soon enough!

WHO CAME UP WITH THIS IDEA? A couple of regular mateys from Corvallis, Oregon came up with the idea in 1995 when during a racquetball game between the two, one yelled “Aaarrrr” after a fall. Being the fun guys they were, John Baur (“Ol’ Chumbucket”) and Mark Summers (“Cap’n Slappy”) officially named Sept. 19 (Summer’s ex-wife’s birthday) International Talk Like a Pirate Day. The holiday started off as an inside joke between the two mateys, but in 2002 they wrote to author, humorist and syndicated columnist Dave Barry who rather fancied the idea and promoted it in his column.

STYLE PAGE 9 Kim’s Korner

In order to celebrate the holiday properly, ye must learn a bit o’ lingo.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

• Start all sentences with “Arr, me matey” or “Arr, me hearty.” • Don’t use the word ‘my’ to describe your possessions. It’s ‘me grog,’ ‘me lass.’ • Never speak in the past or future tense. Always use ‘be’ – I be, you be, they be. • Drop all g’s and v’s when you speak – ne’er, writin,’ fightin,’ drinkin’ and cussin,’ • Be sure to use ye best deep, throaty-sounding voice when ye speak in pirate-ese.

ships with little food or drink. With no refrigerators or canned goods available, their version of cheese and crackers were stale crackers and weevils.

If caught and found guilty of pirateering, a pirate could be hung in front of townspeople or even decapitated. Sometimes the pirate’s head was put on a stick and marched around town for others to see in an attempt to discourage would-be pirates.

PIRATE CODE OF CONDUCT Yes, there was a code of conduct that included the following: • All shipmates have equal voting rights. • No women or boys allowed on board the ship. • Booty must be divided equally, as well as liquor and food. • No fighting between pirates. • No gambling. • Wounded pirates received a pension determined by the severity of their injuries. • Pirates must maintain their own weapons. Not following the code or breaking rules was punishable, but “Walkin’ the Plank” was not considered punishment except in fiction. Depending on the severity of the breach, a pirate could be marooned or put to death.

• Every holiday needs a patron saint, right? Talk Like a Pirate Day is no exception. Actor Robert Newton who played Long John Silver in Disney’s 1950 “Treasure Island” is the honorary patron saint of TLAPD. He’s the first that we know of to use the term “Arr matey.” • What about an anthem? We’ve got that, too - a catchy tune entitled “Talk Like a Pirate Day” written by Tom Smith. • Blackbeard started a fashion trend when he lost a leg to diabetes and wore a wooden leg. Pirates began to use wooden legs as a fashion statement, even adorning them with jewels. • Speaking of jewels, pirates wore pierced earrings because they thought it improved eyesight. Apparently, reading glasses were hard to come by at sea. • Contrary to Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island,” pirates likely did not have parrots or use treasure maps. And pirates typically did not bury their treasures, although Captain Kidd was known to do so. • Although women were not allowed aboard a pirate ship, there were still many famous women pirates including Mary Reed and Anne Bonney who pillaged in the Caribbean during the early 1700’s. Women would have to impersonate men to remain on the ship.

Now for the pillaging that made it all worthwhile. The most prized booty were jewelry and precious stones, and gold and silver. However, other items were more commonly pillaged such as spices, quinine, medical supplies, food, linen and rope. Dividing the loot could be a little more challenging. According to the pirate code of conduct, the loot had to be divided equally. Some things were divided easily and others were more challenging. Jewelry would simply be cut with a knife in order to divide it evenly. A pirate could receive more than his fair share if he lost a limb or partial limb during an attack. A loss of a finger would earn 100 pieces of eight (silver that could be cut into eight small pieces); a right arm would earn 600 pieces of eight.

Pirates also experienced dysentery and contacted Yellow Fever from mosquitoes. Many died from the fever, but some only experienced the high fever and then recovered. And then there was gangrene caused by untreated infections. An unlucky pirate with gangrene could only hope that there were sufficient rum rations still on board when it was time to amputate a limb.

Disease was common and rampant. Pirates would typically experience scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency which would cause their teeth to fall out and skin to go pale. It also led to the disease “crickets” which caused blindness. Hence, the reason we see pirates with an eye patch.

HOW TO WIGGLE OUT OF THE MUD By Dr. Ron Ross

DOG CHURCH

I

’m a fairly religious guy and I love dogs so I was interested when I discovered that there is a chapel for dogs located in Vermont. It is complete with pews and stained-glass windows depicting black Labradors with halos. The chapel is located in the woods of Dog Mountain, which means they probably do not need an indoor restroom. Up to 15 dogs at a time have been attending services in the chapel near the small town of St. Johnsbury in Northeast Vermont. The chapel was built by Stephen Huneck, a folk artist who claims his five dogs helped him recuperate from a serious illness. He said, “They played a really important part in my recovery. They understood that I needed to become well and would surround me whenever I went out.”

After recovering from a virus that left him in a coma for two months, and a dramatic near-death experience, Mr. Huneck, 51, went to work on the chapel, which is modeled on a traditional early-19th century design made out of white clapboard. His devotion to dogs is in the details of the chapel. The weathervane is a running dog, the wooden pews are held up by statues of dogs at either end. Huneck writes on his website, www. huneck.com, “As you walk inside the chapel you will be bathed in the light of my stained glass windows. Dog carvings surround you, music plays, all reaffirming the connection between art, nature, and spirituality. I look at this chapel as the largest artwork of my life, and my most personal. It is my desire to make this a place both magical and transforming.” The chapel has become a haven for man and dog, particularly owners who have lost pets. The entrance to the building is covered with photographs and messages from bereaved owners. “I want dogs and people to feel as if they are in a cathedral,” said Huneck. Huneck holds “blessing of the animals” services in the chapel. He has not had objections to his chapel from local clergy, either to the idea or the canine theme. “In fact, quite a few of them have been to see if there is anything they can do.” If you visit the dog chapel you won’t have to take any treats to keep your pup quiet as there is always a good supply of treats on hand. Huneck says the

Creating Beautiful Basements in and Around Colorado Springs treats are “a small gesture to thank dogs for all they give us and for connecting us to nature, something that is getting more difficult in our high tech, paved over world.”

leader.” One more important thing: The creed of the chapel is: “All Creeds, All Breeds, No Dogma.”

Visitors are free to go on a walk through the old forest with their canine friends where, as Huneck says, “you will see how the dog becomes fully alert, your guide and protector. There they have no doubt who is the

You might not realize, though, that part of the problem might be the fact that the size of your refrigerator is increasing, too. Whether playing to a sold-out 200 seat venue or an East Village dive bar, Perry spins images and observations of the world around her into soulful, intimate communication with her audience. Donaldson has shared the stage with artists such as Tim McGraw, Ricky Van Shelton, Martina McBride, and others. “When Beth hits the stage, it is nothing but energy”, says Jeremy Ruggels, bass guitar, (formerly of “Millionaire Murder Trial”.) Beth was chosen by radio station Majic 98.9 listeners, and immediately assumed her role as rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist “with a presence that comes from years of experience, or just raw talent”, says Donaldson. It’s not too early to investigate various plans and ask some initial questions, such as: • Are my drugs covered under the plan? • Is there a Medigap, the period of time where there is no drug coverage? • What does the plan cost per month, and what are the deductible and copayment amounts? A good first stop to compare plans is the Medicare site online: www. medicare.gov. As can be expected, thieves have figured out ways to commit fraud with Medicare. KIM’S KORNER by Kim Carson

BATHROOM REMODELING MADE SIMPLE: THE BATHTUB

L

ast week we explored Bathroom Remodeling and how to ensure a successful remodel. One of the most common types of bathroom remodels include the addition of a new bathtub. If you are remodeling your entire bathroom, it makes sense to upgrade your tub along with everything else. However, many homeowners purchase a bathtub because of problems with an older tub. If you have a built-in bathtub that your thinking of replacing (and it is not part of an overall bathroom remodel), the whole job could cost between $2,000 and $4,000, when you add the tub, plumbing, and tile work. However, if the finish on your current tub is worn or scratched, you have two good options for improving its appearance without replacing it. Tub Inserts: Several companies produce plastic bathtub inserts to fit virtually every bathtub. These inserts are made of 1/4 ABS acrylic, the same material that is used in football helmet. The first step is an installer comes to your home, takes careful measurements of your tub and photographs. The installer sends the measurements and photos to the insert company, and the company generally has the same model tub in their warehouse as you have in your bathroom. The acrylic is then vacuumformed directly into the tub, making an insert that will fit directly into your tub. The installer returns with the insert, inserts and caulks it, and you are done. Total cost is usually between $600 and $1,000. Resurfacing: The other option to repair the finish of your tub is to have it resurfaced. In this process, a trained professional starts by masking your bathroom to protect it from the impact of chemicals and finishing products. The remaining porcelain in your tub is then removed with acid. The installer puts one or two coats of epoxy on the tub’s surface to promote adhesion. Finally, the installer adds several layers of polyurethane to the tub, to create a new finish. Total cost should be between $300 and $600. Tubs are available in a wide range of sizes; some are even designed to fit more than one bather. However, if you are putting a new bathtub into an existing bathroom, you may be limited by space and by the existing fixtures and cabinets. Take careful measurements and photos, and bring them with you when you shop. Remember, an elegant tub will look less elegant if it appears cramped or oddly positioned. If you are remodeling your entire bathroom, you may be able to reconfigure other elements to accommodate a tub of any

size.

Why run all over town?

Are Brands Important? Jacuzzi started as a specialty manufacturer of air bathtubs, but have expanded to a wide range of mid-range to high-end bathtubs. American Standard and Kohler sell a broad range of bathtubs, from very basic bathtubs to soaking and jetted tubs. Not sure where to start? Find a bathroom showroom that shows a range of bathtub brands and plan a visit.

We Bring the Showroom to You.®

You will find there are different types of bathtubs. Do you want jets? Are you planning to bathe alone or with company? Do you prefer to bathe reclining or sitting up?

Bathtubs are available in every decorating style, so you will be best able to evaluate bathtubs if you understand how a bathtub’s design reflects its style. Style generally refers to an overall look and feel of a room. Style can reflect a tone like casual, formal, or traditional. A bathtub is one element of an overall design. All of the elements translate to a style. It is important to get the design elements of a room working in concert. You do not want to use an Art Decostyle bathtub if the other style elements of your bathroom are Swedish. There are also certain elements of a room that traditionally relate closely to each other. A bathtub and its faucets should have a close design relationship. The bathtub faucet usually also relates closely to the toilet handle, the towel bar and the internal bathroom doorknob. If you are not familiar with how specific styles are reflected in bathtubs, sinks, faucets, trim, and other bathroom decorating elements, it is a good idea to go to a bathroom showroom; each area on display is usually decorated in a cohesive theme. If you are unsure of how the elements relate to each other, ask a salesperson.

Porcelain on steel: Steel bathtubs coated with porcelain, also called porcelain bathtubs, are the most common tubs sold in the United States. They are relatively inexpensive, lightweight, and durable. They are resistant to scratching and chemicals.

If you are redecorating your entire bathroom, and buying and installing a new bathtub as part of the project, you have the most options in terms of installation. If you are replacing a tub, you probably want to change your plumbing as little as possible (if at all), so you need to select a tub with this in mind. Another major variable is whether you are installing a freestanding tub or a built-in tub. A freestanding tub is places on the floor. A built-in tub requires physical integration into your bathroom, using tile, sheetrock, or a liner, plus whatever calk, grout, or paint is needed to finish the project.

Enamel on cast iron: Bathtubs made in this traditional way have been popular since they first appeared in the 1800’s. They are solid and extremely durable. They have a solid, old-fashioned feel. Their look can be old fashioned or not, and they now come in a number of different colors. Fiberglass: Fiberglass bathtubs are the least expensive tub sold. They are light and durable, though their color will fade faster than many other materials. Acrylic: Acrylic tubs have a glossy attractive look. They are sturdy and durable, but cost less than tubs made from metal. They susceptible to scratching from cleansers and can be harmed by chemicals, though scratches can be buffed out.

Bathtubs are now available in many shapes. Most tubs are still rectangular and designed for a reclining bather. Soaking tubs and wooden tubs often have a seat for those who prefer to bath in a vertical position. Manufactures can mold plastic materials like acrylic into almost any shape, from diamonds to hearts. If you are installing a built-in bathtub, the shape of the tub can only be seen from above and looking into it, while you can see the shape of a free standing tub from the side as well as above.

Stainless steel: Solid stainless steel bathtubs are durable and easy to clean. They make a dramatic statement, and are usually found in modern bathrooms with other stainless steel fixtures or decorated in an industrial style. Copper: Copper tubs are among the most expensive bathtubs sold. A copper tub lends a luxurious and distinctive look to any high-end bathroom.

Bathtubs are manufactured in a range of materials; each has its own look and benefits:

9

Foam: This is the newest material used to make bathtubs. The main advantage is that bathers are less likely to bump their heads or bodies. If you or someone in your home has balance or mobility issues, this is an ideal material. It is also comfortable to sit in and retains your bath’s warmth. Wood: Wooden tubs have a distinctive, organic feel. It is the only material listed here that absorbs water, so it “interacts” with your bath. Wooden tubs will wear out faster than any other tub; they tend to warp or rot. However, most wooden tubs are installed with periodic replacement in mind, and replacing a wooden bathtub should be less involved than with most built-in tubs. You can buy a new, basic bathtub for as little as $200, or you can sink thousands of dollars into a high-end or custom bathtub. Whatever you spend, your bathtub should fit into your overall bathroom design. In practice, this means that your other fixtures are high-end, only a high-end bathtub will look appropriate. If you have a modest bathroom, a midpriced bathtub will look best. There are attractive styles and a range of choices in all of the price ranges.

FROM START TO FITNESS By Andrea Renee Wyatt, M.S.S., C.S.C.S.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD

T

here are many factors that contribute to a successful fitness plan. One very important one is choosing the right footwear. It might not seem like a big deal, but continuous movement in improper footwear can lead to serious ankle, knee, hip and back problems. For example, you begin a running program and soon after experience discomfort in your knees. It’s possible that this discomfort is a result of unhappy feet in improper footwear. Before you start an exercise program, make sure your feet are happy and ready to go. Jasen A. Langley, DPM, AACFAS, a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, recommends the following steps in selecting the proper footwear for your activity level. 1. Fit: This is the most important factor in choosing footwear. You should be fitted by a knowledgeable shoe salesperson. Running shoes should always have some room, since runners are susceptible to blisters. 2. Purpose: Buy the shoe that best fits your activity and activity level. 3. Brands: No single brand is better than another. Try various styles to

determine which brand is stylish yet comfortable. 4. Support: Those “cool” colors in the soles of sneakers are built into the shoe for a reason. The colors represent different densities of material. Rule of thumb: The denser the material, the more support there tends to be in the shoe. 5. Orthotics: Your new sneakers or footwear should accommodate orthotic devices. If you use orthotic devices, I suggest you bring them to the store with you to have them properly fitted into your shoe. For those who do not know what orthotic devices are, ask a podiatrist. 6. Durability: Look at the overall aspect of the shoe. Inspect the material. Check the style of the shoe. If you exercise hard, you change shoes every two to three months. The wear of your shoes causes stress and strain in the foot.

As pathogens, carcinogens and other harmful agents enter the body or are created by the body’s own metabolism, they wreak havoc on cell membranes and mitochondrial DNA (which is 15 times more susceptible to damage than nucleus DNA). Antioxidants in cocoa and acai berries slow down or eliminate this oxidative stress.

9. SUPPORTS VASCULAR SYSTEM. Dark chocolate improved the health of blood vessels in study participants by making arteries more relaxed and responsive.

15. RICH IN POLYPHENOLS. Polyphenols are a broad group of plant nutrients that act as antioxidants. The polyphenols in both cocoa and acai help relieve inflammation and help protect against radiation among many other helpful functions.

10. IMPROVES INSULIN LEVELS. The measurement of sensitivity (predisposition to diabetes) was also improved in the patients.2

HEALTH BULLETIN BEHAVIOR TIPS BREAK THE CYCLE

H

armful eating patterns can become cyclical. The cycle begins with an event involving unpleasant emotions such as sadness, anxiety, frustration, or anger. These unpleasant feelings may then lead you to think negative thoughts about yourself. Such negative thinking then may result in coping behaviors that can harm your weight loss efforts. These behaviors may include bingeing, purging, or starving yourself. Such coping behaviors lead back to the beginning of the cycle with more unpleasant feelings and thoughts. You can break the cycle by breaking one link of the chain of events! For example if you tend to binge one day and then starve yourself the next day; just focus

on stopping the binges. This will automatically eliminate your need to starve yourself the following day. Eliminating these behaviors will help you avoid unpleasant feelings that result from bingeing and starving yourself. You can also try to break the cycle by looking for opportunities to deal with unpleasant emotional events in a healthy way. For example, you can visit with a friend when you’re sad. If you’re feeling anxious, try to relax with a soothing bath. When you’re angry, try cooling down by taking care of physical chores. Examine your unpleasant emotions and coping behaviors that have you caught up in a harmful eating cycle. Try to come up with a way to break a link in the cycle so you can get on a straight path to weight loss success!

I

love spaghetti squash and when I tell this to people they always ask me what to do with it. Some people tell me that they mix it with spaghetti sauce, which is a great way to serve spaghetti to those of you who can’t have gluten. I will also sauté with butter, diced green chilies and onions, and cumin.

I garnished this salad with slices of avocado and a sprig of cilantro and served it with grilled salmon. Try serving with grilled seafood, grilled chicken or grilled pork. This is a great summer salad except for having to bake the squash in the oven so try cutting it in half and grilling it out on the grill until tender.

WON’T BE OFF

WHEN YOU INVEST REGULARLY. If one of your worries is whether you're investing at the right time, it shouldn't be. By investing a set amount of money regularly, you establish a simple routine that can help make your financial goals a reality.

I

In addition, investing regularly can: Make it possible to use market fluctuations

to your advantage

 Add potential growth and diversification

to your portfolio

Keep your long-term financial goals in focus Investing a set amount of money on a regular basis does not ensure a profit and does not protect against loss in declining markets. Such a plan involves continual investment in securities regardless of fluctuating price levels of such securities. f you’re fortunate enough to have some disposable income lying around, you might want to use it to advance your long-term financial goals. If so, you can choose among many different options. Here’s one such decision: Should you make extra principal-only mortgage payments, or should you invest the money? There may not be a clear-cut answer to this question, because each choice — to prepay or invest — has some merits. So before making any decisions, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with both options.

To begin with, you might try to calculate whether prepaying or investing gives you the greatest financial return. To come out ahead by investing, you’d need to find an investment vehicle that paid more than your fixed mortgage rate. For example, if you pay off a fixed-rate mortgage of 5 percent, you are in effect “earning” a 5 percent return, so if you found an investment that paid 6 percent or 7 percent annually, you could say that you’d be better off making the investment rather than prepaying your mortgage. At first glance, you might think your choice is clear. After all, you reason, it shouldn’t be too hard to find an investment that pays 6 percent or 7 percent. Over the past 80 years, largecompany stocks have returned on average more than 10 percent annually, according to Ibbotson Associates, a leading investment research firm. And yet, despite these figures, you can’t necessarily conclude that investing always beats prepaying. For

GENERAL LAW PRACTICE with an emphasis on Estate Planning (wills, trusts and planning for incapacity)

one thing, as you’ve no doubt heard, “past performance does not guarantee future results.” And those impressive long-term stock market returns are just averages; though the market has trended upward over the long term, it can also go through extended periods of low returns, or even sizable losses. But when you pay down your mortgage balance each year, you’re earning a regular, low-risk “return” in the form of interest savings. So you need to ask yourself if you can accept taking on greater investment risk in exchange for a potentially higher return. Furthermore, you might find it psychologically beneficial to pay off your mortgage as soon as possible. And the less you owe on your house, the greater your profit when you sell it. But other factors may weigh against prepayment. You generally get a tax deduction on your mortgage interest, and this deduction, especially in the early years of your mortgage, can be considerable. Even more importantly, though, is the need to diversify. If you have all your money tied up in your house, and the housing market slumps, as it has recently, your net worth might suffer more than if you had spread your money around a variety of assets, including stocks, bonds and government securities. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification by itself cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Clearly, you’ll need to weigh all these factors before deciding whether to prepay your mortgage or invest. Fortunately, it’s not always an “eitheror” question. One month you could pay more on your mortgage while the next month you could invest any money you have available. It’s your choice — so make the most of it. “First-time buyers” means you haven’t owned a principal-residence home for three years. If you owned a vacation home, you’re not disqualified.

HELP FOR FIRSTTIME HOMEBUYERS

You’ll begin making payments to the IRS two years after you claim the credit. Payments will be made via your tax payments, although the specifics haven’t been ironed out yet.

A

s part of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, those who want to buy a home will get some help. The biggest item in the legislation is the credit of up to $7,500 that can be given to first-time homebuyers.

Some considerations to think about: Even though this is given as a tax credit, it really is a loan, and you’ll owe money to the IRS. If you don’t pay, the standard IRS penalties and interest will kick in.

But that “credit” needs to be looked at closely. Although it looks like a tax credit, the program is actually a loan that you’ll claim on your tax return. As such, it becomes an obligation that you’ll owe to the Internal Revenue Service over a span of 15 years. Specifics of the program: • Single taxpayers must make less than $75,000 (and married couples less than $150,000). • The allowed credit is up to 10 percent of the cost of the house. • The credit amounts to a zero-interest loan. • You must buy your home between April

If you sell your home, the money becomes due. The IRS doesn’t need to be paid directly out of proceeds from the sale, but you will immediately be obligated to pay back the balance that you owe. (If you sell and your profit is less than the amount you owe the IRS, the balance that you owe is forgiven.)

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2008 King Features Synd., Inc.

The same situation would apply if you move but don’t sell. Let’s say you move to a smaller place and rent out your home. When the home is no longer your main residence, the money becomes due to the IRS for that tax year. THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

FROM THE BEGINNING OF YOUR BUSINESS, PLAN FOR THE ENDING © June, 2005, Lisa Welch Stevens, Esq.,

F

rom the beginning, one of the most important things you need to do is to plan for exiting your business. Nowhere is this more important than when you are in business with others. Partnerships, corporations and limited liability companies owned by two or more individuals need to have exit strategies in place in order to avoid costly and needless negotiation and/or litigation in the future. By exit strategies, I mean mechanisms put in place, through a written agreement, providing for events triggering an exit of individuals from the business, the purchase of ownership interests, valuation, timing and payment. Exit strategies may be included in a buy-sell agreement, a partnership agreement, or an operating agreement. Many small business owners are reluctant to discuss exit planning. They may be concerned that partners will think they are not committed to the business, or that they don’t trust them. They may also wish to avoid legal fees in connection with such planning.

Exit planning actually shows a strong commitment to the business: you believe it will succeed and that, because of death, disability, or other events an exit plan will be necessary. Having a written agreement does not indicate a lack of trust in your partners: in the event of a death or disability the remaining partners will be forced to deal with third parties; and putting agreements in writing is the professional way to run a business. It is less expensive to pay a few hundred dollars for exit planning than to pay tens of thousands of dollars to negotiate or litigate the terms of an exit. And the terms of that exit will be known and certain. In the event of an exit of a partner from the business there is likely to be disagreement over the terms. Without a written exit plan the terms will be determined by a judge, or dependent upon the agreement of the remaining partners. Finally, a binding, written agreement as to the valuation of ownership interests can be of significant tax benefit upon the death of a partner. Exit planning is simply good business planning for multiple owner businesses. As always, consult your legal advisor regarding your specific situation.

The building would take nearly a century to complete. • Sept. 19, 1827, after a duel turns into an all-out brawl, Jim Bowie stabs a banker in Alexandria, La., with an early version of his famous Bowie knife. The actual inventor of the Bowie knife, however, was probably not Jim Bowie, but rather his equally belligerent brother, Rezin Bowie. • On Sept. 21, 1866, H.G. Although he apparently set a new record for speed, defendants in Oakland’s criminal court did not stand much chance of gaining an acquittal. In a 40-year period at the turn of the century, only 1 defendant in 100 was acquitted. • On Sept. 15, 1954, the famous picture of Marilyn Monroe, laughing as her skirt is blown up by the blast from a subway vent, is shot during filming of “The Seven Year Itch.” The scene infuriated her husband, baseball star Joe DiMaggio, and the couple divorced shortly after. • On Sept. 20, 1973, in a highly publicized “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, top women’s player Billie Jean King, 29, beats Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1-ranked men’s player. DEATH RACE “Death Race” is a remake of the 1970s cult classic “Death Race 2000.” The original was great campy fun. It was shot on a budget of about thirty bucks and looked it. What made “Death Race 2000” a great little movie is that everyone involved knew they were making a cheap exploitation flick and had big hoo-hah fun with the project. There is nothing fun about the new version. “Death Race” is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, a man who never met a movie he didn’t puke all over. This is the clown responsible for the abysmal “Alien vs Predator.” I rest my case.

The film stars Jason Statham as a guy named Ames who is framed for the murder of his family in order to get him to compete in the Death Race -a pay-per-view goldmine where convicts race in super-charged, heavily armed cars. Only the winner survives. Win five races, win your freedom. The film also stars Joan Allen as Warden Hennessey. Why she took this gig is beyond all logic, but dang if she doesn’t chew up the scenery. Just watching her spew the most bizarre strings of vulgarity you will ever hear is the only redeeming parts of the picture. Not because it’s well-written, but because it’s so poorly written and spoken with such conviction that you just sit there cocking your head like a puppy that’s just heard a confusing sound. The action scenes are a complete mess. Lot’s of blurry, shaky-cam jump cuts that confuse and frustrate viewers instead of thrilling them. The only way “Death Race” could’ve been worse is if Uwe Boll directed it. I can’t recommend this movie to anyone -- except people I hate.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects favor new romances for unpaired Ewes and Rams. Already-paired Arian twosomes experience renewed harmony in their relationships. Money matters also take a bright turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Use that strong Bovine determination to help you keep the faith with your convictions while you move through a period of uncertainty. Things begin to ease by the week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to your intuition. It could be alerting you to be more careful about accepting a “statement of fact” simply on trust. Don’t be shy about asking for more proof. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Concern for the well-being of someone in need is admirable. But don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Ask a family member, close friend or colleague to help you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s OK to focus on the demands of your career. But try to avoid misunderstandings by also reaching out to family and friends. Your sharp intuitive sense kicks in by midweek. The fastest way to cut your family’s expenses is to get rid of one of an unnecessary car. Consider this: The average annual cost per car (factoring in gas, insurance, maintenance, parking, etc.) is $8,580. So, if your household income is $50,000 per year and you have two cars, you are working 4 months of the year just to pay for them.

SKIP UNNECESSARY CAR TRIPS

“Your Lender Next Door”

An astonishing 91 percent of Americans commute to work alone in their car, averaging 30-miles per round trip. If every person in the U.S. commuted by carpool just one day a week or took public transportation instead of driving, we’d save $215 per car and reduce carbon emissions by 149 million tons. 40 percent of all car trips made in the U.S. are under 2 miles. Try pulling out the old bicycle or just put on your walking shoes for some of those trips.

GREEN DRIVING TIPS!

perature rises, gasoline expands, meaning you get less energy per gallon, and therefore fewer miles per gallon. Plus, when you sit down in a cool car, you’re less apt to crank the air conditioner, which can reduce fuel economy as much as

12%. 6. Check your gas cap. A faulty gas cap allows gas to evaporate, which not only means you’re buying gas that you won’t use, but also contributes to air pollution, particularly smog. 7. Check tire pressure and get tires aligned. Keeping tires properly inflated can improve fuel efficiency by 3% or more. Tires out of alignment can reduce fuel economy by as much as 10%. 8. Keep track when fueling up. Check your own fuel economy when you fill up. Use a little notebook that you can keep in the glove compartment. At the gas station, simply divide miles driven by gallons pumped for “Miles Per Gallon (MPG). If you see it slipping, you can identify problems early. 9. You can improve fuel economy up to one-third by reforming some bad habits, like riding the brake, coming to squealing stops and accelerating like a racecar driver. Follow the speed limit. Avoid “jack rabbit” starts and aggressive driving. Speeding will cost you more. Every 5 mph costs your fuel economy about 7%. Gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas. 10. Don’t “warm up” your car in the wintertime. It doesn’t need more than 30 seconds, and just wastes gas. Also, avoid idling…. particularly in and around schools or other places where children congregate. Idling allows pollution that contributes to smog to accumulate right around the car. Imagine a school parking lot full of idling SUVs and school buses! And it’s pollution that serves no purpose. You get 0 mpg burning that fuel.

1. Get regular tune-ups.

2. Replace dirty air filters. 3. Get regular oil changes with the correct grade of oil. You could improve fuel economy 10% or more. Be sure the old oil is recycled! 4. Lighten the load in your car or truck and save on gas mileage. 5. Parking in a garage or in the shade keeps your car cool in the summer. Use a windshield shade if parking outdoors. A cool car will help you get better gas mileage! As the tem-
