ith the upcoming holiday that will be sure to bring lots of ghosts and goblins knocking at your door, Snippetz takes a look at some classic spooky movies that made film making history. But before we explore the voluminous list of spooky movies, we need to find out, what makes a movie a “classic?”
LET’S ASK AN EXPERT In an April 2004 article, Elizabeth (no last name listed), who writes for Reelclassics.com wrote, “They are films that can be watched on many different levels, and as a result, enjoyed again and again over the years in new ways. What role, other than the obvious, do the actors play in making a movie a classic? There are some actors who either by design or happenstance became classic spooky movie actors, and probably The Wizard of Oz - Possibly the standard spooky make those movies better because of their mem- movie for the whole family. He was slated to star in the first Dracula movie, but unfortunately he passed away before production started. Chaney’s memory has been honored by the naming of The Lon Chaney Theater in the old City Auditorium Building in downtown Colorado Springs.

W
indows are not only our way to look out on the world, but also the world’s way of looking back. Windows with only mini-blinds give the world a feeling of coldness, and people may see you as less friendly, whereas people with no curtains are pretty, upbeat curtains seem to be open and friendly. From the inside of your home, people also get a sense of who you are by looking at the types of curtains you use. I’m not necessarily writing about the psychology of curtains, but we are going to look at different options for curtains and their meanings. Ruffled curtains were popular when I was growing up. If you didn’t have ruffles, then they weren’t really curtains. Ruffles give your home a girly, frilly look, but when used with the right fabric, they can be attractive and classy. There is one major drawback to ruffles: ruffled curtains, more than any others, have a terrible tendency to get dusty. If you or your family has allergies, I would suggest thinking twice before covering your windows with ruffles. Sheer curtains have become more desirable over the past few years. Sheers are wonderful for letting in a lot of sunlight, especially during the long summer days. Additionally, they don’t help keep out the cold during the winter. You may want to combine a sheer and a heavier curtain so that you can pull the heavier curtain aside and use only the sheer during the summer, but you can also have the privacy and warmth of the other curtain anytime.

Tab and tie curtains are attractive, modern alternatives to standard curtains where you simply run a long piece of fabric across the rod. Tabs and ties let you still see the rod, which can be an advantage if you have a great rod, but if you have a cheap, ugly rod, you may not want to show it off. Tabs, especially long tab curtains, are wonderful additions to a formal dining room, when the height works to show off the design of the curtains and the formality of the room. Ties are especially nice in an informal kitchen or breakfast nook when coupled with a fun plaid or striped fabric; the ties are somewhat childlike and provide an interesting feeling of ease and playfulness.

Whatever type of curtain you choose, you should match the overall theme in the room. If you have a very country room, modern fabric or styles will clash with the rest of your décor. His cholesterol is just a bit high. He eats very healthily, with little fast food. He drinks only diet soda and skim milk. He uses sugar substitutes in his coffee. He eats much Indian food. Any help is appreciated. -- B.W. ANSWER: Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) and HDL cholesterol (the good kind) have star billing when it comes to artery hardening and heart disease. The spotlight has begun to shine on triglycerides, and now they are sharing billing with cholesterol. Triglycerides are fats. The whitish, yellowish stuff you see in a cut of meat is triglycerides. Guidelines tell us that a triglyceride level below 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L) is ideal; levels between 150 and 199 (1.7-2.2) are borderline bad; levels from 200 to 499 (2.2-5.6) are bad, and anything over 500 (5.6) is very bad. Your son-in-law is in the “very bad� category. For overweight people, weight loss is the first step in bringing down triglycerides. This doesn’t apply to your son-in-law. He should severely limit rapidly absorbed carbohydrates, like sugar. They raise triglycerides. He also should cut back on red meat and full-fat dairy products. He has to steer clear of trans fats, found in some commercially prepared foods, particularly baked goods and many fast-food deep-fried items. He has to limit alcohol. Your son-in-law is doing all this, but his levels still are too high. Three hours of weekly exercise can

A pomegranate is about the size of an apple, and has a leathery, deep-red to purplish-red rind. When choosing the perfect pomegranate, look at the skin. It should be thin, tough and unbroken, indicating the flavor is well-developed. The pithy membrane around the seeds should not be too prominent, and the seed-coats tender and edible. When you split the hard fruit open, a mass of red seeds in a spongy white membrane is revealed. Only the seeds, with their sweettart flavor and juice-squirting texture, are edible. Also, for the fullest of flavor, the seeds should have an abundance of juice. One medium-size pomegranate will yield about 1/2 cup of juice or 3/4 cup of seeds. Pomegranates can be held at room temperature for reasonable periods of time, out of direct sun. The whole fruit or seeds can be refrigerated in plastic bags, or the seeds can be frozen separately. For longer storage, refrigerate the pomegranates at 32 F to 41 F. Most of the fiber you get from eating pomegranates comes from the seeds. So to keep up with a healthy dose of daily fiber, crunch away! You also can sprinkle pomegranate seeds over salads, fruit desserts, cakes and puddings, or use them in marinades, glazes and for garnish. Pomegranate seeds also are a delicious topping for waffles, oatmeal, pancakes, cereal or sundaes. For a unique way of incorporating pomegranates into your cooking repertoire, try this flavorful recipe from Rick Rodgers’ “Autumn Gatherings: Casual Food to Enjoy With Family and Friends” (Morrow Cookbooks). “If you’ve never roasted salmon, get ready

“One important tip: Incorporate the butter over very low heat so it softens into a creamy emulsion with the acidic base; if the heat is too high, the butter will simply melt. While the sauce is made with bottled pomegranate juice, garnish each serving with a few pomegranate seeds, if you wish.” ROASTED SALMON WITH POMEGRANATE BUTTER SAUCE 1 (2-pound) center-cut salmon fillet, with skin 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Pomegranate Beurre Rouge 1/2 cup bottled pomegranate juice 1/2 cup chicken broth or vegetarian broth 2 tablespoons minced shallots 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary or 1/4 teaspoon crumbled dried rosemary 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled, cut into 8 equal portions Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Lightly oil a large rimmed baking sheet. 2. Run your fingers over the cut side of the salmon, feeling for any pin bones. If necessary, pull out the bones with sterilized tweezers. Place the salmon on the baking sheet, skin side up. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Cut the salmon vertically into 6 equal portions, but do not separate the pieces. (This makes the salmon easier to serve after cooking.) 4. Roast until the salmon show just a hint of bright pink when prodded in the center of the fillet at one of the cuts with the tip of a knife, 12 to 15 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, make the Beurre Rouge. In a medium saucepan, bring the pomegranate juice, wine, shallots and rosemary to a boil over high heat. Cook until the liquid is reduced to 2 tablespoons, about 6 minutes. Reduce the heat to very low. 6. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in 1 tablespoon of butter. Whisk until the butter softens into a creamy texture, occasionally returning the pan to the heat to keep it warm, but not hot. Repeat with the remaining butter, 1 tablespoon at a time. Season with the salt and pepper to taste. If you wish, strain the sauce through a coarsemesh wire strainer into a serving bowl, but I usually skip this refinement, as the sauce will taste great one way or the other. Do not bother to try to keep the sauce piping hot -- it will be heated by the warmth of the salmon. Serve the salmon on individual dinner plates, and spoon the sauce on top. Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings.

1. Heat oven to 400ºF. 2. Whip egg whites, adding sugar a little at a time, until stiff peaks form. 3. Fold in remaining ingredients. 4. Place dollops of the mixture on a cookie sheet with parchment paper. 5. Turn oven off and place cookie sheet in the oven for 40 minutes. 6. Top with fresh fruit and whipped cream.

av, as the Kiwis down under say, is a traditional New Zealand dessert that was made back in the mid ‘20s for the ballerina Anna Pavlova. It has a light and dreamy texture that should have a crispy shell and a marshmellowy center. This recipe comes from my brother-in-laws mother via his sister, who are all from New Zealand. Some of the recipes I found used lemon juice but I found that it didn’t come out as fluffy. Caster sugar is a fine granulated sugar. If you have a hard time finding it regular granulated sugar will do. Typical fruits used down under are kiwi fruit, strawberries, passion fruit and mangos. For a variation try folding in some cocoa powder at step 3.

New DVD Releases for Week of October 26, 2009 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” -- The “Ice Age” franchise continues, and in this third installment we find Manny the Mammoth (Ray Romano) about to become a father. Feeling a bit left out, Diego the Sloth (John Leguizamo) heads off and discovers three
big eggs and decides to be a papa, too. Turns out the eggs are dinosaur eggs and when they hatch, oh what hijinks ensue! While not the best film in the series, “Dawn of the Dinosaurs” is good enough to keep your young ‘un quiet -- although the threat of having to listen to Ray Romano’s voice for 90 minutes is enough to get anyone to do what you say. “The Prisoner: The Complete Series” -- Thanks to the upcoming AMC remake, this cult TV classic from 1968 is getting the full-on, top-shelf treatment it deserves: Totally remastered, highdef video, 5.1 audio and tons of special features. Patrick McGoohan stars as Number 6, a secret agent who resigns from his organization only to find
himself drugged and taken to a remote island village where he is subjected to bizarre psychological attacks in order to find out what secrets he has. “The Prisoner” is the most twisted surreal television program ever produced, and well worth the viewing. DOG OF THE WEEK “Battlestar Galactica: The Plan” -The series may be dead, but that’s not stopping the producers from milking more money from fans. “The Plan” is the “Battlestar Galactica” saga as seen from the perspective of the Cylons -- a kind of “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” telling of the story. ften after I have discussed with clients the pros and cons of incorporating their business, and the best choice of limited liability entity, I receive a call questioning the necessity of doing so. Invariably this is because, at my urging, they have consulted with an accountant, and he has told them they don’t need to incorporate. The accountant may note – correctly – that they are not yet generating sufficient income from the business to realize any of the tax benefits incorporation can bring. The problem is that the accountant is so focused on tax and other financial issues that he has lost sight of the legal issues. Limited liability entities are first and foremost creatures of LAW, created fundamentally for legal reasons. The intent behind permitting such entities is to shield business people from personal liability should their businesses fail or
to get excellent interest rates when you apply for loans. It’s not necessarily so. Your scores can drop anyway. Take this example: You have a card with a $10,000 available credit limit. You keep your balances down around $3,000 -- approximately 30 percent. Without any good reason (except that it just wants to), your credit-card company drops your available credit, perhaps down to $5,000. Suddenly your credit usage appears to be at 60 ehaving responsibly with your credit is percent. Some businesses clearly face more risk than others. I have told clients with businesses facing little or no liability risk that they probably need not incorporate for any legal reasons. An example might be a client who works as an independent contractor providing administrative office services. However, I had one client, an electrician, who was working in private residences and commercial establishments repairing and installing electrical wiring. Clearly, he potentially faced a huge risk of personal liability in the event of a resultant electrical fire or the like. I strongly recommended he incorporate his business; his accountant tried to talk him out of it on the grounds there was not yet any tax benefit to doing so. Fortunately, when I pointed out to my client his legal liability risks, he did incorporate.
Just as an accountant may be so focused on tax or other financial issues that he or she neglects to consider the legal issues surrounding the decision to incorporate, so may an attorney be so focused on the legal issues that he or she neglects to consider the tax or financial issues. For this reason I always recommend that my clients consult their accountant as well in order to insure that ALL important issues and factors are considered.

One-third of your credit score depends on how well you stay within the limits of your available credit. Keep a sharp eye out for information leaflets from your credit-card companies. You might be told that your new minimum payment will be an increased percentage of the existing balance, or that your interest rate is rising, your due date is changing or your available credit is being slashed. Then look at your credit-card statements each and every month to see if those changes have taken effect. As always when dealing with credit-card companies: beware. ovember is National Caregivers Month. Caregivers are the angels who take care of someone who would otherwise be in a facility. It sounds simple, but the actual work involved can be backbreaking, challenging and stressful.
Take a look at Family Caregiver Alliance Web site (caregiver.org) and click on Caregiving Info and Advice. Although based in California, the information is pertinent to all caregivers, especially the Caregiver Tips and FAQs.
Thanks to the National Family Caregiver Support Program, there are now more help resources for caregivers than ever before.
The Family Care Navigator at the above site has a list of resources by state. Click on the state graphic and it will take you to a menu of available services in your area and contact information.
Here are some examples: To learn about services to caregivers, your first call should be to the Eldercare Locator (managed by the Administration on Aging) at 1-800677-1116, or go online to www.eldercare.gov. On the local level, look for the Area Agency on Aging. Its role is to help you find solutions. Perhaps you need someone to stay at home while you buy groceries, or you need help with all the additional laundry. Maybe you could benefit from a support group where you can vent

Preparing for the Fall Season, Part 6 Yard Equipment Maintenance Checklist
Before the weather grows colder it's important to prepare for the winter months to prevent costly damage. Yard equipment will last longer and run better if you take some extra time to do a little equipment maintenance in the Fall. The following is a checklist for storing equipment for the Winter! The first step to this maintenance is to acquire a copy of the owner's manual and factory maintenance schedule for each piece of equipment. If you've lost manuals over the years, don't worry, most manufacturers make manuals available on their websites. Use the remaining fuel. There are always a few scattered leaves or ragged borders that need attention in the fall. Run off the remain

ing fuel in lawn mowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, and other gasoline or two-cycle equipment by finishing up some extra chores. If you still have fuel remaining, it is important to drain it or treat it with a fuel stabilizer. (Some gasoline contains ethanol, which separates during long storage periods and causes engine damage.) Also, use up the fuel stored in gas cans. You always want to start with fresh fuel in the Spring. If the fuel is fresh, straight unleaded gasoline, you can pour it in your car's gas tank. If the gasoline has been mixed with oil for a two-cycle engine, either use it in a piece of equipment that uses the
same fuel mix, such as "some" snow blowers, or check with your local fire department for a safe and legal disposal method. After the last mowing of the season, let the engine cool slightly and drain the warm oil. The engine should be turned off completely before you drain the oil. Many recycling centers and oil change locations will accept used oil for recycling. Replace the oil filter and the engine oil with a fluid the engine manufacturer recommends. Also, put about a tablespoon of clean oil in the mower engine cylinder. Pull the starter rope a few times to help distribute the oil throughout the engine. Clean all of the lawn and garden equipment you will be storing. It's typically best to avoid using highpressure washers, or water at all for that matter. Instead, use compressed air whenever possible, as moisture in mower components can lead to corrosion and premature wear that can shorten mower lifespan. If you do choose to use water, be sure to lubricate the grease points on the mower to expel any moisture that may have entered during cleaning. The following tools come in handy when cleaning greasy equipment: cloths, rubber scraper, soap, sponge, towels and water. Apply some elbow grease to remove all the dried-on dirt, debris and chaff. Be especially diligent around the cooling fins and any air intake areas.

Some cotton swabs can help clean between spaces. After thoroughly cleaning and drying the machines, take a wrench or socket and tighten any loose bolts. While cleaning, it's important to give each machine a thorough inspection, noting any obvious fluid leaks, loose fasteners or damaged components. Repair time will be shorter if you take the equipment to the small engine repair shop in the Fall. You will beat the crowds who take their snowblowers to the shop once Winter hits, and all the homeowners who wait until Spring to fix all their yard equipment. Take storage precautions. Equipment with batteries should either be stored where the battery won't freeze or have the battery removed. If possible, store equipment on blocks so the weight won't be resting in the same place for many months. Many pieces of hand-held equipment have storage handles.
