“I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the ‘lower animals’ (so called) and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me.” -Mark Twain, Letters from the Earth, 1907

A

mericans spent $45.5 billion on their pets in 2009. Sixty-two percent of all U.S. households – 71.4 million homes – live with a pet. The pet industry is just doggone huge. Americans love and pamper their pets and believe their own dog, cat, bird, snake, turtle, etc. is the most adorable, most well-behaved and the most fun. In the past few years, breed organizations and breeders have upped the ante on the varieties of cats and dogs available as pets in the U.S., From the Chinese crested hairless dog to the hairless Sphynx cat, Americans have a plethora of breeds from which to choose. And there are thousands of cats and dogs awaiting homes in shelters across the country. However, many Americans are fascinated with wild animals, and a whole new array of pet options opened up when the bird, the ferret, the rabbit, the iguana, the monkey, the pig, the snake – even the rat – became part of the domesticated animal world. At least, we think we domesticated them. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there for animals that want to be part of a human’s life or make the list of America’s cutest and most entertaining companions. But the competition is as stiff as a bird dog pointing to the target, especially considering those Hollywood types.

• Then, there’s Black Jack Surratt. This yellow Labrador retriever had a lead role in the 2008 movie, “Marley and Me.” The movie was a hit and a tear jerker, and Black Jack played “mischievous” like no other dog before him. He could be the sentimental favorite.

• Moose the Dog played Eddie in the long-running hit TV series “Frazer.” Moose, a Russell terrier, played a highly intelligent character, adept at staring down Frazer and cueing in at just the right time. Moose also brought fame – and fortune – to the breeders of Russell terriers. It’s not just a dog’s day afternoon. • The 1995 movie, Babe, is about a pig of the same name that is bought at an auction and raised on a farm with a variety of animals. Babe befriends a sheepdog named Fly who teaches his new buddy to herd sheep. Babe does a fine job of proving to the world that pigs can fit in anywhere and be anything they want in life. • Remember Socks, former President Clinton’s cat. Socks was so well-liked that she had a book written about her. Surely, a movie is in the works. • The Harry Potter books and movies glamorized another cat: Mrs. Norris. Maybe J.K. Rowlings, the author, will be at the Oscars rooting for the renowned cat.

Think of a dancing cockatoo. This bird loves to boogie to Ray Charles. Probably millions of Web users have laughed in awe as the rock ‘n’ roll cockatoo shakes his head up and down and all around and bounces his booty in rhythm to “Shake your Tailfeather,” appropriately. Cats dance, too, via YouTube videos. They also box with parrots, hang from chandeliers and attack dogs.

• The first cat in the White House was Abraham Lincoln’s cat – Tabby. • To get Lassie to lick the face of his child co-star, the producers put ice cream on the boy’s cheek. • The Taco Bell dog’s real name is Gidget. • Morris, the star of the 9 Lives Cat Food commercials, had three lives – three different cats played Morris. • Ernest Hemingway kept dozens of cats at his home in Key West, Fla. Many of those cats had six toes. The tourist stop is still home to at least a dozen cats.

Nowadays, anyone’s pet can reach stardom through the Internet. All is needed is a video camera and a spot on YouTube.

When it’s time to honor – Academy Award style – famous pets that have passed on, names like Lassie, Rin Tin Tin (the first canine movie star), cats Garfield and Morris and Mr. Ed, the talking horse, will no doubt bring a few tears to those in the audience who remember the first of the fourlegged bunch to achieve on-screen fame.

We Love Pets!... Continued from Page 2 The snake, for example, has become widely popular. Snakes can live up to 20 years, so the commitment is long-term. Although certain snakes threaten the welfare of the humans living in the home, it doesn’t matter to some. More than one child in the U.S. has been killed by the family’s pet python. The corn snake and the king and milk snakes are the most popular and ones frequently recommended as pets. However, buyers beware: Pet snakes eat live prey or frozen prey, which means a space in the freezer for delicacies like frozen mice – or a trip to the pet store to retrieve a live mouse. The frog is another interesting pet. Perhaps it’s the bulging eyes or the sound of “rivet” that endears humans to these little green guys. Frogs can live up to 15 years, so if it’s going to get boring watching a frog jump around in his enclosure, it might be wise to get a cat or a dog or a monkey instead. Note: Frogs are decreasing in numbers in the wild and facing extinction, largely at the hands of humans. It’s best to get the pet frog from a frog breeder. Who knew? The iguana is a wildly popular pet – some call it a “fad” pet. The danger is once the fad fades, what happens to the iguana? About 1 million iguanas are imported into the U.S. each year. Most of them die, and almost none of them live longer than 10 years. Their life span is 20 and many don’t live more than two years. A healthy adult iguana is 5 to 6 ft. long and needs to climb, needs stimulation and pretty much an entire room in which to live. He could, however, be a fun and happy pet once the owner trains him on a leash and takes him out for walks in the fresh air.

Seek Shelter Today!

All that’s needed for the pet cockroach is a 10 to 15 gallon tank with Aspen wood shavings and hiding places like the cardboard roll that comes with toilet paper, cardboard egg cartons or driftwood. The hissing cockroach variety eats fresh fruits and vegetables (no head lettuce) and dry dog food. They love carrots, oranges, apples, celery and pea pods. A cockroach is quiet, which is certainly an advantage to the cockroach owner. It is best to have more than one cockroach to ensure the cockroach’s social well-being. For those screaming “eeeewwwww,” the cockroach is honestly listed as an exotic pet.

Well, the feeling you should be getting from all of those items is casual, and the theory of texture is, the more texture something has, the more casual it will be. TAI YI FEELING STUCK?

M

any individuals are searching for answers in their emotional, mental, and physical growth. Some will travel from one person to another sometimes to find the correct answer and sometimes to find the answer they want to hear. For some, healing can be a difficult journey and for some it can be a joyful journey. What makes the journey to heal a joyful journey? CHOICE We all have free will choice to heal or to not heal. It can be that simple. Many will question, “How do I make that choice? I can say I want to heal without pain, but I still have pain!” There can be several reasons as to why ones choose a painful pathway instead of a joyful pathway even when their conscious minds state they want the joyful pathway. Tai Yi energy work can assist with understanding WHY a person continues to make a choice that creates an outcome of pain or stagnation. Stagnation is the feeling of being stuck, almost like being stuck in thick mud. Physical and emotional symptoms can be low energy levels, lack of focus, chronic pain, low desire for enjoyment, and also feeling like it is ‘impossible’ to

heal. Stagnation can be the feeling of fog in one’s head.

• Tours • Exquisite Yarns • Outerwear • Felting Classes

Tai Yi works with the meridians of the body to assist in moving stagnate energy, increase the natural movement of energy, brings up the deep issues that tend to stay suppressed, eases chronic pain, creates a feeling of lightness, increases the physical immune system, among others. If you feel you are in a situation of stagnation or you know one who is, the Tai Yi exercise River of Energy may be of benefit.

River of Energy works to convert stagnant energy into productive energy. This is good for those who ‘gave up’ and created depression, chronic pain, and mental pain. This can assist with re-creating opportunities and can assist in turning a negative experience into a positive one and helps one to take action. If one is in a suppressive environment, this can assist one in leaving that environment.

The careers of several important American artists, including Jackson Pollack and Willem de Kooning, were launched thanks to WPA endowments.

• On April 7, 1776, Navy Capt. John Barry, commander of the American warship Lexington, makes the first American naval capture of a British vessel when he takes command of the warship HMS Edward after a desperate battle off the coast of Virginia.

• On April 11, 1961, Bob Dylan plays his first major gig in New York City, opening for bluesman John Lee Hooker at Gerde’s Folk City. With his guitar and harmonica, Dylan was a unique stage presence with a vast library of American folk songs in his repertoire.

THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox, Va., Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28,000 troops to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the Civil War. Forced to abandon the Confederate capital of Richmond, Lee had no other option. • On April 10, 1906, O. Henry’s second short-story collection, “The Four Million,” is published. O. Henry was the pen name adopted by William Sydney Porter. Porter began writing in the late 1880s but did not seriously apply himself until 1898, when he was jailed for embezzling from a bank in Austin, Texas. • On April 8, 1935, Congress votes to approve the jobs-creating project Works Progress Administration, a central part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “New Deal.”

• On April 6, 1970, Sam Sheppard, a doctor convicted after a sensational trial of murdering his pregnant wife in 1954, dies of liver failure. After a decade in an Ohio prison, Sheppard was released and later acquitted following a re-trial. He briefly returned to medicine and later embarked on a short stint as a pro wrestler called “The Killer.” His story is rumored to have loosely inspired “The Fugitive” television series and movie. • On April 5, 1984, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scores the 31,420th point of his career, breaking the NBA’s all-time scoring record, which had been held by Wilt Chamberlain. The 7-foot-2 Abdul-Jabbar was born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. in 1947 in New York City, and changed his name in 1971 after converting to Islam. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Sump Pump Make sure the sump pump is operating correctly; install a battery back-up pump. Deck Look for water stains where the deck ties to the house. Ongoing water leakage can lead to wood decay, weakening the deck structure and the house. Pressure wash your deck to remove any moss and mold. Remember, if you see wood damage, like raised fibers, increase the distance between the spray nozzle and the decking. Air Conditioner Disconnect electric power to the outdoor condenser on your air conditioner and clear it of leaves and debris with a vent brush, power blower, garden hose, or the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Foundation Hairline cracks in foundation walls might be the result of concrete curing or minor settling and aren't automatically cause for alarm. Mark them with tape and check them again in a few months. If they've worsened, call a structural engineer. If they're stable, fill them with an epoxy-injection system. During this economic downturn, there is a silver lining. The cost of material goods is lower now than it has been for years. The cost for labor has also been reduced significantly. The result for residential homeowners is the cost of remodeling is at an all-time low. If you remodel during this window of opportunity, you will realize a huge return on your investment. When our economy turns around, as it has several times before, the old adage “Buy Low, Sell High” can really apply to the value that will be added to your home.

SNIPPETZŽ HEALTH AND WELLNESS Light laser, in which a laser beam reduces prostate size in a similar manner. TUNA -- transurethral needle ablation -- is another minimally invasive procedure, done in a like way. It employs radio waves to reduce prostate size. All of these methods work. The most important element in making a choice is the doctor’s skill in the technique.

ENLARGED PROSTATE PUTS SQUEEZE ON URINE FLOW DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For men with BPH, would you recommend the Prolieve System for treatment? It involves reducing the prostate with heat. Must it be done periodically to maintain symptom improvement? Any information will be appreciated. -- Anon. ANSWER: BPH -- benign (not cancer) prostate hypertrophy (overgrowth) -- is a common condition of older men. The urethra -- the bladder’s drainage tube -runs through the prostate. A large gland acts like a vise, squeezing the urethra and making it impossible for the bladder to completely empty. Large glands make men get up many times during the night to visit the bathroom. They make it difficult to start the urinary stream, and they can reduce the stream to a dribble. Minimally invasive procedures, many done right in the doctor’s office, pare the gland so that a free urine flow is re-established. The Prolieve System (a trademark name) delivers microwaves to the gland to shave the excess growth. In this and in similar techniques, instruments are inserted into the urethra by way of the penis and passed upward to the level of the prostate gland, where the microwaves are then activated. Yes, I can recommend it. Quite often, the procedure need be done only once. However, it is possible that a repeat will be necessary to trim the gland again should it regrow to the size where it compresses the urethra.

Medicines are another possible route for handling an overgrown gland. Drugs can relax tight muscles in the prostate and in the outflow tract of the bladder to permit better urine flow. Flomax and Uroxatral are two examples. And medicines like Proscar and Avodart shrink the gland, but they can take months to work. The booklet on this gland and its problems discusses these issues in greater depth. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I always heard that one must fast before being tested for cholesterol. My doctor always told me to do so. At my last visit, he had his nurse draw my blood for a cholesterol check. I told him I had not fasted, but he said it didn’t matter. Have things changed? -- D.S. ANSWER: You don’t have to fast for an accurate cholesterol reading. However, you do have to fast, preferably for 12 to 14 hours, for an accurate triglyceride reading. Triglycerides often are checked along with cholesterol.

A new trend is developing for triglycerides. Many now feel that a more accurate picture of triglycerides is obtained by not fasting before blood is drawn. Whether this technique wins universal approval is something we’ll have to wait to see.

HOPE FOR AN ALZHEIMER’S CURE

ew research has shown just how Alzheimer’s disease spreads, and from that could come a cure!

HELP WANTED

• UPS Shipping • Packaging Services • Copying, Finishing & Printing Services

A study done at the University of Massachusetts took a close look at a protein in the human brain called Tau. It was always thought that this Tau protein was a by-product of cells that had died due to Alzheimer’s. Not necessarily so, say the researchers. What made them wonder was that Tau cells were found in spinal fluid of Alzheimer’s patients. How did they get there? It turns out there are two ways for Tau cells to migrate. One is that those cells are secreted in a pattern -and therein lies a potential cure. Follow the pattern, interrupt the movement of those toxic cells and stop the spread of the disease to different parts of the brain.

Would you like to help with Alzheimer’s disease clinical research? The National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging holds such trials. You can call 1-800-222-2225 or 1-800438-4380. Or go online to www.nia. nih.gov, click on Clinical Trials and look on the right side for the Clinical Trials button. Or scroll down the page and click on the AD Clinical Trials database for additional trials. On that same page, click on Alzheimer’s Disease Information Network and you’ll go to the Advancing Alzheimer’s Disease Therapeutic Research (www. adcs.org) for more studies. Meanwhile, do all you can to keep your blood pressure under control. Other research indicates that high blood pressure plays a part in the progression of Alzheimer’s. Specifically, it interferes with decision-making and the ability to organize thoughts -- but not with memory functions. In order to keep everyone honest (you know who you are,) we have moved the answers and solutions to the trivia and puzzles to the next page (17). with many of the major movers and shakers of the struggle. “Eyes on the Prize” is an unflinching look at one of the most turbulent eras in our country’s history, and one of the greatest PBS productions ever made.

New DVD Releases for Week of April 5, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Eyes on The Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years 1954-1965” (Not Rated) -- Fans of this groundbreaking, six-hour PBS documentary have been waiting for years for it to be released on home video at a reasonable price. This epic production chronicles the post-war struggle for civil rights by blending historical footage with interviews

“The Lord of the Rings: Remastered Deluxe Edition” (Rated PG) -- This isn’t the award-winning Peter Jackson production beloved by Tolkien fans around the world. No sir. This is the 1978 cult animated film by Ralph Bakshi, director of “Fritz the Cat,” “Wizards,” “Cool World” and “American Pop.” What makes this film notable is that it was the first attempt to bring “The Lord of the Rings” to the big screen, and it is more faithful to the books than Jackson’s was. That said, Bakshi’s production is a mixed bag. The project ran out of money before

the entire saga could be finished, which means the film ends abruptly after the Battle at Helm’s Deep -- or about halfway through the saga. Also, Bakshi’s rotoscoping style of animation is a real embarrassment in places -- specifically in the rendering of the orcs. Basically what he did was film a bunch of guys in fright masks and robes and then draw the cartoon versions over what he filmed. The result was a cartoony version of a bunch of guys in frumpy robes and Halloween masks.

“Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series” (Not Rated) -- All four seasons, 25 discs and about 16 tons worth of special features, including commentaries, deleted scenes, Webisodes, featurettes and more. There’s even a special boxed set that comes with a big-old Cylon action figure. Fans of SyFy’s reboot of the classic 1970s sci-fi fantasy television show will gobble this up. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

I think the people who would be interested in this version are those of us who saw the film when we were younger and will buy it just for the nostalgia factor; Tolkien completists who want to add the disc to their collections; or Bakshi fans. If you aren’t one of those people listed, you might want to give this one a pass.

s an investor, you might think it’s easy to evaluate your investments’ performance. After all, the bigger the gain, the better, right? This statement is true enough, but as an investment strategy, it’s incomplete — and, if followed rigidly, it could lead you to make some mistakes that could hinder your progress toward your financial goals.

Call today to reserve space for yourself and a guest at this free educational seminar. Unit trusts and mutual funds are offered and sold by prospectus. You should consider the investment objectives, risks, and charges and expenses carefully before investing. The prospectus contains this and other information. Your Edward Jones financial advisor can provide a prospectus, which should be read carefully before investing.

What are some of these potential mistakes?

Dinner will be served.

Here are a few to consider:

Tuesday, MarchApril 30, 2010 Date: Tuesday, 27, 2010 Date:

Evaluating performance over a short period of time — If you measure an investment’s performance over a relatively short period of time, you may be more tempted to invest emotionally — that is, you’ll buy more shares of an investment when you “feel good” about it because its price has risen, and you’ll sell more shares when you “feel bad” because the investment’s price has fallen. This behavior is the opposite of the classic piece of investment advice: “Buy low and sell high.” Try not to make investment decisions based on short-term performance. Instead, look at an investment’s long-term track record. While it’s true, as you have no doubt heard, that “past performance can’t guarantee future results,” it’s nonetheless useful to see how an investment has fared in different market environments.

Neglecting the impact of contributions and withdrawals — If you put more money into an investment, it will be worth more — until the price drops — and if

you take money out of an investment, it will be worth less — until the price rises. Yet many people mistakenly attribute their investments’ performance to these inflows and outflows. Failing to distinguish between “growth” and “income” investments — To help achieve your long-term goals, you’ll need a mix of growth-oriented investments, such as stocks, and income-producing vehicles, such as bonds. However, bonds will typically not add much growth to your overall portfolio, so keep this in mind when you look at the year-to-year change in value on your investment statements. Maintaining unrealistic expectations — In 2009, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose nearly 19%, while the S&P 500 jumped more than 23%. But if you anticipate such unusually high returns annually, and you base your investment strategy on them, you’ll likely be disappointed and have trouble meeting your goals. For a variety of reasons, most investment experts foresee relatively modest returns in the financial markets over the next few years, so you’ll want to plan accordingly. Comparing investments to benchmarks — Try not to compare the performance of your investments to benchmarks such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the S&P 500. If you’ve chosen an aggressive investment mix, your returns may show wide swings, beating the benchmarks substantially in some years while trailing them significantly in others. On the other hand, if you’re a conservative investor, your returns may consistently lag the major benchmarks, but you’ll probably experience less volatility. Once you know what to expect from your investments, you’ll be less likely to be disappointed at your returns — and you’ll be better prepared to create and follow an investment strategy that works for you. T

his article is not about your personal determination. It is about your last will and testament. When should you review your will?

Generally speaking, you should review your will: whenever you have a major change in your personal situation; whenever you have a major change in your financial situation; or, annually, to determine if there are any changes in the law that should be reflected in your will. A divorce usually generates reasons to review your will because big personal and financial changes result. If you already have a will, what happens to it if you get divorced? Married folks typically list their spouse as a beneficiary. Divorced folks rarely do this. After you are divorced, you usually don’t want much to do with a

zen hamburger will last 3-4 months in the freezer if it’s wrapped correctly. The dates on food can be confusing. “Use by,” “sell by” and “best if used by” aren’t the same. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has a comprehensive site (usda.gov) with information that will clear up “use by” dates and labeling confusion. On the site, put “Basics for Handling Food Safely” in the search box. When in doubt, you can call the USDA Meat and Poultry hotline at 1-888-674-6854 for questions on the safe storage and handling of meat, poultry and egg products. This can be crucial if you’ve had a power outage and aren’t sure if the food in your refrigerator or freezer is still good.

FOOD SAFETY I

t’s bad enough that our food costs so much at the grocery store. When food spoils because it wasn’t used in time, we end up wasting money.

Here are some things you can do: If you have a pantry, post a list on the inside of the door showing the contents and date purchased of the bulk items you buy. Keep track of the expiration dates. You can do the same with your freezer, especially if you divide bulk meat purchases. Label each package with the date you bought it, and the use-by date. For example, fro-

Food recalls can be a serious problem -- when we don’t hear about them. The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t issue a recall, but they do post notices and safety alerts. Recently, a common ingredient used in many foods was found to contain salmonella. The FDA was required to leave it up to the manufacturers to get the word out. In many cases, the news media didn’t pick up the stories. You can protect yourself and your family by keeping track of food recalls and alerts via the FDA site at www. fda.gov. It has up-to-the-minute news in the Public Health Focus and News & Events section on the front screen. Food Safety (www.foodsafety.gov) has a list of recalls and alerts, as well as a way to subscribe to news feeds. You’ll still need to visit the site, but the newest information will be available for you. The site also includes comprehensive information on food poisoning, as well as a place to report it. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Fortunately for a lot of folks, the law assumes that you will forget to change your will after you are divorced and remove your now former spouse as a beneficiary. Absent an agreement between the parties or a Court order, a divorce invalidates testamentary (will) gifts to former spouses. The same is true for powers of attorney, insurance beneficiary designations, and pay on death designations for various accounts. The same is also true for folks who never had a will. If your estate passes via intestate succession, it is not going to a former spouse. Situations may arise where there are good reasons to maintain a former spouse as a beneficiary in a will. An example might be to insure continued maintenance payments after a long-term marriage. The best practice in such instances is to make a new will after the divorce.

After you have exited from the marriage zone, you should make a new will. If you don’t, and your former spouse is your only beneficiary, when you pass away your property will be distributed according to the plan the legislature has determined for such situations (intestate succession) and involves your property being distributed to your closest blood relations. THANK YOU!

T

his note is to put everyone in the Tri-Lakes area on notice of the remarkable support system we have in the Palmer Lake Fire Department, Sheriff and police department, and the El Paso and Douglas County Search & Rescue. Almost 3 weeks ago, our very much loved family member, Ryan Fenton, walked into the mountains near our home for what ended up being the last time. Everyone searched tirelessly from Thursday evening through Saturday at approximately 1:30 p.m. when Ryan was found. During that time they treated all of us with such hospitality and compassion that can't be well put into words. They worked tirelessly and with such precision up until the last. When the news came that Ryan was found, they broke the news so kindly and with well-thought-out words--what a terrible task. They offered their food and their warmth--even though there were so many friends and family there at the station--they could have been crabby and overwhelmed. Not once did they treat us with impatience. They accommodated us as best as they could and treated us like they were our long-time friends. They never made us feel like this was just their job. They prayed with us, laughed, cried and held us in their hearts. Then, a whole week later, they were among 840 who attended Ryan's memorial service far south in Colorado Springs. We hope they heard hope. To us, they truly were a gift from Jehovah, "the God of all comfort." This has been an unthinkable experience for our whole family and brotherhood of friends. The Palmer Lake Fire Dept., Sheriff and police, El Paso and Douglas Counties Search & Rescue are to be praised for their humanness. We feel bad that we seldom think about them until a personal tragedy strikes. They are for the most part, volunteers. They are always there for us. Eternally Grateful---Fenton, Golden and Edgerton Families and numberless friends from all over the world. Donations to the "Helpers": P.O. Box 302, Palmer Lake, CO 80133 (please specify Fire Department or Search & Rescue)
