THOSE DARING VICTORIAN DAYS The Victorian Period is often thought of as the advent of the “hairstyle movement.” However, in those days, women were damaging their hair – actually scorching it – by overusing hot irons. Their hair also took Crowns of Glory... Continued on Page 2

Retro styles surged in the 60s. Women brought back a bit of the roaring 20s with a sleek look – less pomp. The pageboy – a longer version of the bob made its mark in the 60s as well. The following styles were a cut above in their respective decades.

Today’s bob, whether it’s chin length or shoulder length, blunt cut or layered, straight or curly, is still in demand at hair salons. The bob has weathered decades of new do’s that come and go.

The bob led the way for creative stylists to come up with a myriad of hair designs for women and men. Female hair styles ranged from the short pixie to the bouffant. Big hair had its day for more than one decade. The French twist, the updo’s, the beehive and the flip – the styles all had one thing in common – they were puffed up and big. There’s a reason they used to say that a women’s “do” would make a good birds’ nest. Big hair was celebrated from the 50s to the 70s.

In the 90s, hairstyles settled down a bit and gentle replaced big. Long hair was in – as in Julia Roberts and Cindy Crawford: shiny hair that flowed off the shoulders, often with a twinge of curl. In the late 90s, the feathered look had been revived and continued into the 21st century.

Petal Curls – 50s

COLOR, COLOR, COLOR Whether it’s hot pink or flaming red or black, white and gold stripes; coloring one’s hair is in vogue. In the 2000s, blonde hair on the crown and dark hair at the nape is not uncommon. From blonde to red to jet black – the color craze is here to stay.

Dates: Saturday - May 1st Sunday - May 2nd

CELEBRITY INFLUENCES The Flip – 60s

Time:

Do blondes really have more fun? Hollywood has had its share of blondes who’ve persuaded the hair industry. From Marilyn Monroe to Britney Spears, the color of blonde, from ash to gold, has enticed many women to visit their stylists: going in brown, coming out blonde.

Men throughout the ages have had their own “do’s” like the buzz cut or the flattop or the crew cut; along with the mullet and the bowl cut. Long hair has never lost its appeal in some men. Rocker Rod Stewart helped popularize the shag cut for men.

• Remember Olympic figure skater and gold medalist Dorothy Hamill? Not only did she win gold for the U.S., but she also brought the “wedge” to the podium – a hairstyle rage that lasted far beyond the 1976 Olympics. By the way, versions of that style are still around in 2010.

In the 80s and 90s, the do’s for women and men were a bit wilder but still big. Although the shag had its start in the 60s, feathering hair became a widespread trend in the 80s.

• Cary Grant, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio – these gents of the past and the present have influenced the sleek and sophisticated look in men. • For that tussled, mischievous look, one can always count on Hugh Grant. • Bruce Willis and long-time TV icon Telly Savalas brought bald to beautiful and had many men shaving their heads to reach what used to be a male’s “dread head after 40.”

• Actress Meg Ryan, known especially for her roles in romantic comedies of the 80s and 90s, had locks to die (or dye) for – from the short shaggy look to the long, wildly windy curly look.

• And then there’s teen singing sensation Justin Bieber – he was born decades after the Beatles appeared on stage. But he must be fixated on bringing back the 60s mop-top hairstyles of the fab four.

A FEW LOCKS OF TRIVIA

• In the 19th century, a first-class hair salon only charged 5 cents for cutting someone’s bangs. • The hot-blast hair dryer changed the way women groomed their hair – it was born out of the 19th century. • The Bobbie pin came from the bob. • In 1903, the first electric haircutter was introduced: a comb with a fine platinum wire connected to the electric lighting system. The heated comb burnt off the ends of the hair.

• The first known school for hair styling was established in Chicago in 1890.

• A permanent waving machine was developed in the early 20th century by Charles Nessler. Spiral curling became popular in the U.S. in 1906.

• Methods for bleaching and touchups haven’t changed since 1891 – still achieved with hydrogen peroxide and

• In 1908, synthetic hair was invented. It was made out of cotton, corn and other grains.

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH HEALING, LLC Tai Yi Energy Practitioner - Tami Urbanek Under mental, emotional, or physical stress? Low immune system? Anxiety? Depression? Lack of focus? Tai Yi means Supreme Movement and is an ancient form of Chinese energy work that is similar to acupuncture and can assist in many ailments.

TAI YI SELFDECEPTION

S

pring is here with many new possibilities! Make this season, the season of renewal for you: physically, mentally, and emotionally. This is the time to let go of the old baggage you may have been carrying around and embrace change and healing. Letting go of old baggage can seem scary, since the old baggage can represent familiarity and, in some cases, comfort. Truly letting go of old baggage (self-beliefs, patterns, sabotage) is a new choice. We know we have made a new choice when we see the results of new choices. We see change in our physical reality and in our emotional, mental, and spiritual selves. On occasion, I have people arrive for a Tai Yi session that want to hear how much they have grown and healed already. In many people, this is not the case. Yes, there may have been growth in some areas, but ones need to look at what they are holding onto in order to really heal the issues that are stubborn. I hear some people say, “I do not understand why I still have this issue! I worked on it again and again!” In that example, the working may have been in going through the motions, not really resolving anything. Also, the person may deceiving him or herself. I will use myself as an example. At a young age, 18 years old, I chose to marry and have a child. I quickly divorced my husband when I realized, after my daughter was born, that he would not change his patterns of anger

and abuse. He did not want to. Looking back, I can see how I remained stagnant for a few more years, attracting the same angry people to me and allowing myself to be disrespected, while also disrespecting myself. During my early adult years, I did not understand why I was attracting the same people to me. I was in denial. I was using self-deception. At the age of 22, I made drastic changes in my life. I ended toxic relationships and learned to love myself and to offer compassion to myself. I continued to grow, heal, and to learn how to communicate more effectively with others. One Tai Yi exercise/treatment that addresses self-deception is Live Energy of Deceit. Live Energy of Deceit is for those who lie and deceive themselves. If ones receive this exercise and lie to themselves, the energy becomes stronger and very difficult to ignore. It will bring up the self-deception strongly IF they want to work. This treatment is good for those who say, “I don’t understand why I still have this issue.” One can go into such a habit and go into regret that they still have the issue and then try to deny they have the issue. This is a clear sign they have not worked on that issue. When one chooses to heal and to do the work of healing, regardless of how uncomfortable it may seem, then that one is saying, “I am worth it and I deserve to heal.” That is a powerful statement when it is said physically, emotionally, and mentally.

We are located in the Monument Plaza behind Rosie’s Diner.

President Eisenhower closed the alley in 1955 and turned it into a mimeograph room, while President Nixon had a one-lane alley installed underground directly beneath the North Portico entrance of the White House.

SNIPPETZ® HEALTH AND WELLNESS

OVERACTIVE BLADDER RUINS LIFE DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have to run to the bathroom all day long. If I don’t make it in time, I have an accident. This has made me so nervous that I have given up on all thoughts of a social life. It’s ruining my life. If we go to a restaurant, I must have a table near the restrooms, or I won’t sit down. What can be done? I’ll try anything. -P.G. ANSWER: Your condition is an overactive bladder. Sudden, inappropriate and forceful contractions of the bladder wall muscles make it imperative for you to rush to the bathroom or you lose control of urine. Such bladder muscle contractions shouldn’t occur until the bladder is full or nearly full. For some reason, your bladder reacts violently when it’s only partially full. Conditions like a bladder infection can be a cause. Often, however, muscle contractions take place without any cause ever being found. You have to see a doctor who can look for things that are easily treated, like an infection. If no cause is discovered, then you can reprogram your bladder to not react like this when it’s only partially filled. For two days, time the intervals between bathroom visits. Add 5 minutes to the shortest interval and hold off on urinating for that time interval for a week. On week two, increase the interval by 15 minutes. Keep this up for a month, and then increase the interval by half an hour. Every two weeks, add another half hour to the interval between bathroom visits. When you reach three hours, you can stop. You also can ask your doctor for prescription medicines that quiet bladder muscles. Detrol, Sanctura, Vesicare and Enablex are names of some of these medicines. Another technique involves injecting the bladder muscles with Botox. Botox weakens the force of bladder muscle contractions and allows you to hold urine for more-normal intervals. In extreme circumstances, a gynecologic urologist can advise you if a battery-operated device attached to the bladder is something you could con-

sider. It stops frequent, unwanted and unneeded bladder contractions.

MAGALY’S

SKIN CARE

DEAR CLIENTS, NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS...

*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What causes hangnails? I have a crop of them. I know this isn’t a pressing medical question, but what can you recommend to prevent them? -- L.B. ANSWER: Hangnails form when the skin dries. Dry skin at the borders of the nails cracks to form a hangnail. Prevention comes from the daily use of moisturizers. Even though it’s tempting to pull a hangnail off, don’t. Cut it with small, sharp scissors. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain what complex carbohydrates are. I see this term on all diet instructions. I don’t have a clear idea of what it means. What makes them complex, and how are they healthier than other carbs? -- W.L. ANSWER: Carbohydrates are starches and sugars. Fruits, vegetables and most grains (flours) are carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are long chains of carbon molecules. Starches are complex carbohydrates. Sugars are simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates don’t raise blood sugar as quickly as do simple carbohydrates, so they don’t provoke a great demand for insulin. That’s what makes them more desirable.

SPRING INTO FITNESS & GET READY FOR SUMMER

A

s warm weather approaches and days get longer, many people turn their attention to outdoor activities and summer sports. Whether you are a regular exerciser or new to fitness, it is important to begin to prepare for those activities now. The steps listed below will help you along the way...

1st - STRENGTHEN THE CORE Regardless of the type of activity, having strong core muscles (abdomen, back, gluteus muscles, etc.) is important. Strong core muscles give you a solid foundation for performing movement in the extremities. Whether you are gardening, mowing the lawn, swinging a bat, kicking a ball, or hitting a golf club, a strong core will not only improve fitness, it will help you prevent unwanted injuries. A regular routine (no less than three days / week) of core-conditioning exercises is important. You can develop core strength with the use of stability balls, bands, sliding discs, and weights, or perform exercises that require no equipment at all - such as a plank, spinal bridging, partial curl-ups and rotation exercises. Activities such as Yoga and Pilates are also very effective.

2nd - THINK “FLEXIBILITY” If you have not been working to maintain your strength and flexibility, you will notice that you have less and less strength and flexibility as the years go by. When you return to outdoor activity or sport, be sure to include stretching exercises in your routine. Begin slowly by adding two stretches per body part / per day into your workout routine. Take into consideration the muscle groups and joints that seem to need the most attention. The low back, hamstrings, hip flexors, spinal rotators, shoulders and scapula retractors are some of the areas I like to target with my clients. Sample flexibility exercises include: low back hyperextensions, shoulder circles, neck stretch, back squeeze, quadriceps and hamstring stretches, abdominal rotations, side bends and toe / heel point.

3rd - CARDIOVASCULAR CONDITIONING

SPRING SPECIAL!

Did you maintain aerobic activity during the winter? Did you maintain normal body weight? If not, now is the time to start making adjustments for the months ahead. The level of cardiovascular activity you will be doing outside will dictate how much aerobic training you need to do in the preparation phase. Walking your dog three to four miles per day will require some cardiovascular conditioning, but not nearly as much as if you were planning on playing in a summer soccer or softball league. If you like to walk outside, you can condition your body to longer durations by gradually increasing the amount of time you walk while incorporating speed and stride length variations in your workout. If you plan on playing a summer sport, try to include more vigorous cardiovascular workouts at least three days per week, or incorporate interval training as a means of increasing your body’s ability to adapt to greater demands.

One of the best ways to get in shape for a certain activity or sport is to do that activity or sport. Practice the skills you will need with exercises that mimic that activity. For example, yard work requires a lot of spinal rotation, bending, kneeling and lifting. Soccer requires quick bursts of activity with start and stop moves, balance, coordination and agility. Engaging in agility drills, hand-eye coordination and balance exercise is perfect for either activity. No matter what your age or level of activity, there are several books and published resources available to help you get started with agility training. A fitness professional can also be an invaluable resource to assist with the design of your training program.

he National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, along with the American Medical Association, have created an updated version of “The Physician’s Guide to Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers. That’s us. The purpose of the book is to help physicians evaluate our ability to continue driving. The goal, of course, is to prevent injury and death. According to studies, those of us in the 65 to 74 age group have the highest rate of deaths caused by motor vehicle injury. In the group that’s age 75 and above, driving-accident deaths rank second, after falls. The reason is because we’re more likely to have disease and medication issues than any other age group. Doctors, they say, can help keep us safe on the road by doing periodic evaluations.

The Guide lists the steps doctors should follow, including evaluating medical conditions, drugs prescribed and the concern of the patient and family members. In fact, it might be those family members who ďŹ rst no-

SPRING ONIONS FLAVOR THE SEASON

T

here’s nothing like the intense flavor (or the smell) of an onion. Wild onions were among the first foods that mankind gathered and ate and are one of the first signs of spring. Onions are in the allium family, along with garlic and shallots. Spring onions are one of my favorite varieties. Spring onions are also called green onions, young onions, pencil onion and scallions. Scallions aren’t as fully ripened as a green onion and should not have a bulb. Spring onions are the milder, first stage of a mature onion. If left in the ground to grow, they’ll form into an onion bulb. Larger, older, spring onions may have limp or faded stalks and a stronger flavor than the smaller ones. Spring onions should be small and thin, with a firm base at the root tip and crisp, bright green leaves. Select spring onions that are not fully developed with a white bulb end and long green stalks. The flavor of the leaves is milder than the root end. Spring onions will keep for 5 to 7 days when wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigerator.

the roots and peel away the outer layer to remove any lingering dirt. Next, rinse the leaves, spreading them gently with your fingers to get at the dirt in the crevices. Both parts are edible. Although the white bulb is most often listed as part of recipes, the green leaves should also be incorporated in the recipes and as a garnish.

Ice Cream Maker for a Day

You also can use the leaves to add a wonderful burst of green color, to tie up appetizers into a package or to use as a frilly, edible garnish. To curl the ends, cut off the roots and all but about 3 inches of the green tops. Slice the tops lengthwise down from the green end into the white section. Put the leaves in cold water and chill for several hours to curl them.

Looking for a special way to celebrate your child‛s birthday?

WE HAVE IT!! Your child and guests will make their own ice cream. One delicious learning experience!

While spring onions are best served raw, they’re also delicious grilled or sautéed. Spring onions should be added during the final stages of a recipe for maximum flavor. This Spring Onion Pesto is the perfect way to flavor cous cous or orzo pasta, to tuck under the skin of chicken, or to place on fish or pork before grilling or baking.

PATRICIA’S CAFÉ LEMONATA

2 ea Lemons ¼ c Sugar 1½ c Soda Water 1. Juice the lemons, removing the seeds. 2. Add the sugar and mix until it dissolves. 3. Add to the soda water, top with ice and serve.

L

emonata is Italian lemonade with a little carbonation.

I like to use San Pellegrino sparkling water but you can use any type available. It is not as sweet as most lemonades so if you need to add more sugar then go for it. I like to garnish it with a little sprig of mint and a slice of lemon. In Mexico limes are used in place of the lemons but it is still called lemonata. You would want to use 3 limes to the 2 lemons. Try adding some crushed strawberries, a little grated ginger or some fresh orange juice to make it a little different.

24 spears thick asparagus, trimmed and peeled 12 slices (5 ounces) thin prosciutto 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1. In 5-quart Dutch oven, heat 3 quarts water to boiling over high heat. Add asparagus; cook 3 minutes to blanch. Drain; rinse with cold running water. Pat dry with paper towels. 2. ALL THEY REALLY WANT IS TO BE LOVED! CASPIAN

CASPIAN

Caspian is a year old, male, Catahoula Leopard dog. He’s very playful and excellent with children. He has all his shots and has been micro chipped. Caspian currently lives with two cats and two other dogs and is looking for a new home. Caspian will be neutered upon adoption. Samantha Weaver

Mencken who made the following observation: “For centuries, theologians have been explaining the unknowable in terms of the-not-worthknowing.” • In a standard deck of playing cards, the only king without a mustache is the king of hearts. • If you ever make a trip to Alaska, you might want to keep in mind the fact that it is illegal there to wake a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking its picture. • Those who study such things claim that when a glass breaks, the cracks travel along the glass at a speed of more than 3,000 miles per hour. • You probably know that the Wright Brothers made the first powered airplane flight in Kitty Hawk, NC. It was Dec. 17, 1903, and Orville piloted the aircraft a total of 120 feet. You might not be aware, however, that the length of that flight is shorter than the wingspan on one of today’s Boeing 747s. • An autumn visit to a corn maze in North Yorkshire in the United Kingdom last year turned disastrous for Anne Moon. When she reached her hand into a pen to pet a pig, the pig (named Ginger, incidentally) took Moon’s hand into its mouth. The pig released the hand unharmed but kept the diamond out of the woman’s engagement ring. The farmer who owned the attraction, Paul Caygill, then had to spend days searching for the gemstone in the pig’s refuse. • The next time you’re looking at a map and see a “you-are-here” arrow pointing to your current location, you’ll know that the arrow is technically known as an ideo locator. Catahoula Leopards are extremely agile and athletic, territorial, protective of “their property”. Their owner must understand the Alpha concept and stay in control at all times, but still be loving to the dog. Catahoula’s are very loyal, loving, intelligent and independent. They really think for themselves.

BOOKER Booker is a 4 month old Jack Russell Terrier. He does well with his siblings and is a bundle of joy! We aren’t sure how Booker likes cats though or very young children. Jack Russells are a high energy breed which relies on a high level of exercise and stimulation and there are not a great deal of serious health complaints. Jack Russells are first and foremost a working terrier. Their high energy and drive make these dogs ideally suited to a number of different dog sports such as agility. Obedience classes are also recommended to potential owners, as Jack Russells can be stubborn at times and aggressive towards other animals and humans if not properly socialized. Despite their small size, these dogs are not recommended for the condominium or apartment dweller unless the owner is ready to take on the daunting task of providing the dog with the necessary amount of exercise and stimulation. These are truly big dogs in small packages.

LOST PET LEAVES HEARTBREAK BEHIND DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog Coco, a small miniature Schnauzer, has been lost for six months now. I have tried to contact many people, such as the police, animal control and my vet, and placed posters around the neighborhood; however, nothing. It’s very painful, the idea of not knowing how he is doing. I don’t know if he is alive, or if I’ll ever see him again. So what can I do about this situation? - Veronica, Hightstown, N.J. DEAR VERONICA: I’m sorry to hear that your dog is still lost, Veronica. It’s heartbreaking when a pet disappears. You’ve tried contacting all the local resources possible, which is the recommended first step. You might want to check back in to animal control, as well as call around to shelters in a wider area to see if they have taken in a dog fitting Coco’s descrip-

tion. If you have a picture, even better. Several lost pet Web sites can be found online, as well. Pets911.com has a section where lost pets can be reported and found, or stray pets can be listed. Petfinder.com, perhaps the best-known service, also has a large lost-pets database. A totally free service is www.missingpet. net, homepage of the Missing Pet Network, which is maintained by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. When listing your pet, be sure to include his age, breed, coloring, size and weight, what type of collar and tag he’s wearing, where he was last seen and any personality traits. If he answers to a certain call or likes a particular treat, mention that. Do not mention a reward in the listing. Consider also getting an e-mail account from one of the free e-mail services online and using it as your main contact. Also, be on your guard against online theft. If contacted about Coco, don’t give out credit card or Social Security numbers, your home address or other secure information. New DVD Releases for Week of April 19, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Avatar” (Rated PG-13) -- Sam Worthington stars as Jake, a paraplegic soldier in the distant future who volunteers for a mission on the planet Pandora. With the use of a 9-feet-tall “avatar,” Jake is to infiltrate the Na’vi tribe and learn everything about the planet’s indigenous peoples so that the human colonists can displace or destroy the Na’vi in order to obtain Unobtanium, a rare

mineral that will solve Earth’s energy crisis. Naturally, Jake “goes native,” and leads the Na’vi in a battle against the humans. “Avatar” is the highest-grossing film of all time. Director James Cameron, using a revolutionary motion capture technology, 3-D and state of the art CGI has created a triumph of production design. In a 3-D theater, you actually feel transported to an alien world. The melding of live-action and computer generated characters and landscapes is seamless. Sadly, the dialogue is cringe-worthy, the plot hackneyed and the environmentalist/ anti-corporate/anti-imperialism allegory is ham-fisted -- making “Avatar” the most beautiful mediocre movie you’ll ever see. The DVD/Blu-Ray is being released on April 22 -- Earth Day -- because nothing says “I Care About The Planet” more than the production of millions of non-biodegradable discs and cases. And this is a

bare-bones release. No special features, no multi-disc special editions. Nada. I suspect the reason behind this is because “Avatar” is going to be re-released later this year with 20-30 minutes of extra footage (which means yet ANOTHER DVD/BluRay release just in time for the holidays. So, if you really really really need to have “Avatar” in your home, then go ahead and grab this edition. But my recommendation is to wait for the multi-disc special editions that’ll be out later this year. “Crazy Heart” (Rated R) -- Jeff Bridges delivers another top-notch performance in this intimate and compelling character drama about Bad Blake, a singer-songwriter playing juke joints and clubs while his protege Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell) is rockin’ the stadium tours. Blake hooks up with a reporter (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and begins a relationship with her and her son, while just around the corner a chance for

ATTENTION: TRI-LAKES HOMEOWNERS During this economic downturn, there is a silver lining. The cost of material goods is lower now than it has been for years. The cost for labor has also been reduced significantly. The result for residential homeowners is the cost of remodeling is at an all-time low. When our economy turns around, as it has several times before, the old adage “Buy Low, Sell High” can really apply to the value that will be added to your home.

Checking out the simple plug-in “Kill-AWatt” meter can help consumers assess how efficient appliances really are. The meter comes with basic, easy to follow instructions. It displays kilowatt-hours and makes it easy to find out your elec-

trical expense. The rising cost of electricity can really hit you where it hurts and this program provides a ‘no cost’ way to reduce energy usage and identify the real energy abusers. Members that have used the meters report “unplugging appliances that weren’t being used to save energy.” Key Accounts Representative, Kevin Holbrook, wanted to widen the meters’ availability and turned to the local public library system for help. “Accessibility to the meters is better for our members and there are several learning opportunities possible with this meter”, said Holbrook. “With the co-op’s help, users can calculate how much it will cost to use an appliance over a month’s time.” For more information, please contact your local library in Limon, Simla, Elbert or Monument.

Even if you decide to wait until after you’re age 65 to apply for retirement benefits, most people should start getting Medicare coverage at age 65. If you’d like to begin your Medicare coverage, you should apply within four months of reaching age 65. It’s important to note that people who already receive Social Security retirement or disability benefits do not need to apply; they will be automatically enrolled in Medicare. Why apply online? Because it’s fast, easy, and convenient. You don’t need an appointment and you can avoid waiting in traffic or in line. If you’re within four months of turning age 65 or older, what are you waiting for? As Patty Duke and her television family will tell you, it takes less than 10 minutes! Visit www.socialsecurity.gov and select the “Retirement/Medicare” link in the middle of the page. And be sure to catch TV’s most famous identical cousins and the whole family at www.socialsecurity.gov/medicareonly.

❚ Investment risks and opportunities for 2010

n the investment world, there aren’t many certainties, but here’s one of them: prices will always go up and down. As an individual investor, you can’t do anything about this volatility. But the way you respond to it could make a big difference in your long-term investment success.

Date:Tuesday, April 27, 2010 Time:6 p.m. Location:Bella Panini RSVP:Kathy Williams at 481-4964

Many investors think they can “beat” volatility by trying to time the market — in other words, by buying when prices are low and selling when prices are high. In theory, this is an excellent strategy, but in reality, it’s pretty much impossible to follow — because no one can really predict, with any accuracy, market highs and lows.

Hors D'oeuvres will be served.

So instead of attempting to time the market, you’re much better off by following a time-tested strategy known as systematic investing.

Adam R Grayson, AAMS® Financial Advisor .

To systematically invest, you simply put the same amount of money into the same investments at regular intervals. To illustrate, you could put $100, $500, $1000 or more into Investment X on the first of every month. To make it even easier on yourself, you could automatically transfer those dollars from your bank account directly into the investment you’ve chosen.

www.edwardjones.com Member SIPC

In all likelihood, your contribution will buy a different amount of shares of Investment X each month. For example, if Investment X sells for $100 per share in January, a $500 investment will buy five shares. In February, if the price has fallen to $50 per share, your $500 will buy 10 shares.

IT’S TIME TO MAKE THE WORLD

In other words, when you systematically invest, you’ll automatically buy more shares when the price is low and fewer shares when the price is higher — and that’s a great way to cope with market volatility. But systematic investing also offers some other advantages, including the following: Efficient share building — The more shares you own of an investment, the bigger your cumulative gains whenever the price of that investment rises. Consequently, increasing your shares should be a prime objective — and systematic investing is one way of building your share ownership. Investment discipline — Most people realize the value of investing for their retirement and other long-term goals, but they often put it off each month and find other things to do with the money— and by then, there’s often nothing left to invest. But by setting up a bank authorization to invest systematically each month, you’ll “pay yourself first.” Lower cost of investing — Through systematic investing, your cost per share likely will be lower than if you made sporadic lump sum investments. And by lowering the cost of investing, you will, in effect have the potential to boost your returns. While systematic investing is typically a good way to fight the effects of volatility, it can’t guarantee a profit or prevent a loss in declining markets. And keep in mind that you need to have the financial wherewithal to keep investing through up and down markets. But if you have that ability, consider putting systematic investing to work for you. It may not be glitzy or glamorous, but it may work for you. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

few weeks ago, I wrote a two-part series about the harsh realities of actually suing someone in civil court. You may wonder, though, if you do decide to go ahead and sue the “dirty dog who done you wrong”, how to go about doing so. If you are suing someone in state district court, and you are proceeding pro se (i.e., representing yourself, from the Latin “for oneself”), you personally can’t issue a summons against the defendant. Without service of a summons on the defendant, you cannot bring the defendant into court. Only a licensed attorney or the court can issue a summons. You will have to begin your case by filing your complaint with the clerk of the court and having the clerk issue a summons. You will need to take the signed original complaint and a proposed summons, together with several copies of each, to the clerk’s office at the courthouse. The clerk will keep the original complaint and, depending upon which judge your case is assigned to, 1 – 3 copies. You will want a filestamped copy for yourself, as well as one for each defendant. You will have to pay filing fees, which are several hundred dollars if you are requesting a jury trial. The clerk will return to you the signed original summons. After you have the file-stamped copies of the complaint and the original signed summons, you must have a copy of the complaint and an original summons personally served on the defendant, and you must accomplish this within sixty days of the date you filed your complaint with the court. You

GROWING VEGETABLES TO SELL

I

f you had a successful vegetable garden last year that produced more food than your family could eat, expanding your planting this spring and selling your excess produce can put money in your pocket. There are only a few differences between growing for yourself and growing to sell. Here are a few tips: • Sign up now if you need to arrange for space at a local farmers market. • Stagger the planting so that your vegetables are ready over time, not all at once.

• Keep your selection simple because customers will go for the tried and true first. Grow a variety of sizes of common vegetables: tomatoes, carrots, onions, beans, peppers, cucumbers and eggplant. • Pick your vegetables the day before and wash them well. (Take a mister with you to keep the veggies fresh-looking on sale day.) • Plan your table displays. If the market doesn’t provide a table, you’ll need to do that. If there’s room, use three tables in a U-shape to draw customers in. Look in thrift shops for big baskets or wooden boxes as well as for fabric to line them. Simple burlap over the tables will lend a “homegown” flavor. Use wedges or doorstops to tilt the displays so items can be easily seen. Make your pricing signs to put in each basket or box. • If there isn’t a farmer’s market near you, ask if you need a permit to set up a small stand at the end of your driveway or on a shopping center parking lot. Look for a shady spot. • If selling directly to the public sounds like too

Whoever serves the defendant must complete a return of service or affidavit of service form and sign it before a notary, which document describes who was served and the date, time and location of service. You will need to file this with the court clerk (again, take the original and several copies). If you do not do so, the defendant can claim he was never properly served and any judgment entered against him will be void.

After the defendant is served, he has 20 days to file an answer or a motion to dismiss, or both. (This is if he was served in the State of Colorado; he has 30 days if served out of the State of Colorado). He must also serve his answer and/or motion to dismiss upon you, but he can do this by mail. If no answer or motion to dismiss is filed, you can file a motion for the clerk to enter a default and a default judgment against the defendant. Once an answer is filed with no counterclaims against you, the motion to dismiss is denied, or you have filed your answer to any counterclaims, the case is “at issue”. As the “responsible party” you must then proceed to drive the lawsuit forward. If you do not do so, or you do not do so in a timely manner under the rules of civil procedure, your case may be dismissed, with prejudice, for failure to prosecute. If it is dismissed with prejudice, you can never re-file it and your claim is forever lost. Once your case is “at issue” you must call the division clerk within thirty days to set it for trial. I will describe how this is accomplished, and what happens next, in my next article. As always, this article is for general informational purposes only, and does not constitute the proffer of legal advice. Please consult your legal advisor regarding your particular situation. much work, there are other places where you can sell your vegetables: Local restaurants and small grocery stores have to get their produce from somewhere. You won’t make as much money, however, and might have to wait on your payment, as you’d be one of their vendors. If you have good luck with your vegetables, consider setting up a CSA next year. Community Supported Agriculture is a group of people who support a foodgrowing enterprise. You sell “shares” to a limited number of people who pay you in advance to grow their food. At designated times (generally weekly through the season) you harvest what’s ready to be picked and divide up the bounty. GRANITE Frequently Asked Questions by Maria Turenne International Stoneworks, LLC Where does granite come from? Mother Earth herself has taken 30 million years to make this stunningly beautiful and highly durable stone from a variety of exotic places all over the world. Mother nature’s granite color, shading, pattern, and so called “natural imperfections” are all unique to your granite selection. Where do I begin with this granite countertop process? We recommend starting with your preliminary color selection and visiting our showroom, onsite granite yard, and a few of our referred stone slab wholesalers. Also with a simple drawing including measurements of your upcoming project, you would be able to obtain an estimate. How long does the entire process take from start to finish? Depending on the stone availability, and installation schedule, each project typically takes approximately 10-14 business days to complete.

the stove or oven on my granite countertops? Absolutely yes! Just think about how many millions of years granite has been subjected to the harsh climates & extreme temperature changes of our earth. A 300-600 degree pot or pan sitting and cooling isn’t going to damage your granite countertop. How do I clean and care for my stone countertops? Quite simply, use soap & water, never abrasives. To avoid streaking, dry the countertop with a dry cloth, or even spritz it with a bit of rubbing How often do I need to seal my granite countertops? The frequency of sealing granite varies greatly from stone to stone. Here at International Stoneworks, LLC., we seal every fabricated stone countertop with a penetrating and impregnating liquid sealer prior to its installation. This impregnating sealer penetrates below the stone’s surface and into the most porous parts of the stone. Thus, preventing any staining liquids from discoloring the stone. Penetrating sealers are also invisible to the naked eye, and will not change the stone’s appearance. In most cases, stone countertops do not need to be sealed again for a couple of years or more.
