Breaking News: A space shuttle has been destroyed by a meteor shower, killing everyone on board. According to NORAD, Denver and other parts of the world are in the midst of a major meteorite shower.

Scientists at NASA have just learned that a large asteroid will collide with Earth in only 18 days. Basically, folks, our planet will be destroyed.

Is it Hollywood hype, or do Americans have a fascination or fear or both that someday a remnant from the solar system the size of a football field will plummet to Earth at lightening speed and destroy us all?

To better understand the “sky is falling” spectacle, read on.

FIRST, A FEW DEFINITIONS Meteor: bits of space debris coming from the solar system that fall through the earth’s atmosphere. Meteor is the term used for the actual streaks of light that can be seen in the sky as the debris enters the atmosphere. Meteor is from the Greek word “meteoron,” which means a “phenomenon in the sky.”

Meteor Shower: a number of meteors radiating from one point in the sky. They’re caused by a stream of meteoroids.

Meteoroid: the small rocky debris that is “flying around” in space or the atmosphere.

Meteorite: a piece of rock that is strong and large enough to survive the journey through space and then land on the surface of Earth. Stony meteorites make up about 93 percent of all meteorites found on Earth. They can be divided into chondrites and achondrites. Chondrites are made up of the same dust and debris that formed the earth at the beginning of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago. Achondrites have been geologically processed. Meteorites are smaller

than asteroids or comets.

Asteroid: small planetary bodies that revolve around the sun. Scientists state that most asteroids are located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter – the asteroid belt. They vary in size. According to NASA, more than 200 asteroids are larger than 60 miles in diameter in the “belt.” More than 750,000 asteroids in the belt have diameters larger than 3/5 of a mile. There are millions of smaller ones.

Comet: an icy body that releases gas or dust. Comets travel around the sun in long, oval orbits. The center of the comet is a ball of ice and rocky dust particles (resembling a dirty snowball). The ice is mainly frozen water but can include other frozen substances like ammonia, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane.

METEORITES FOR SALE AND OTHER PHENOMENA • A meteoroid heading toward Earth can be redirected by exploding a nuclear device near it. The radiation “pulse” from the explosion pushes the meteorite off course.

• Some meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere at 130,000 mph.

• Meteorites contain the oldest known rocks in the solar system.

• In 1985, a study by the science journal “Nature” concluded that the rate of a meteorite hitting humans was .0055 per year – once in every 180 years.

• As many as four billion meteoroids fall to Earth each day – most are very tiny.

• In 2004, a 30-foot wide meteoroid hit the atmosphere over Antarctica and left 2 million lbs. of dust in its wake – enough to affect the climate on the other side of the planet.

• More than 24,000 meteorites have landed on Earth, but only 34 are believed to have originated on Mars.

• The International Space Station is covered with a foot-thick layer of Kevlar to protect it from an estimated 100,000 meteoroids that have or will hit the station.

• When a meteorite is found, the Antarctic Search for Meteorites team records its location, size, color, amount of fusion crust, probable type and anything else of importance. Meteorites collected by the ANSMET team in Antarctica are packed in dry ice to mimic conditions in the field and shipped to the Antarctic Meteorite Laboratory at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

FROM THE SKY TO FAME There are a few meteors, comets and asteroids that are stars in their own right.

Perseid meteors are fast, entering Earth’s atmosphere at about 133,200 mph. Most are the size of sand grains; some are as big as peas or marbles. Almost none of these hit the ground. The Perseids come from the debris of the comet Swift-Tuttle, which is the largest object that is known to make repeated passes near Earth. Its nucleus is about 6 miles, which is the size that wiped

Rumors of comets hitting Earth were fueled in the early 1990s by astronomer Brian Marsden, who determined that SwiftTuttle could hit Earth. Further observation concluded it could not happen. However, Marsden predicted that the comet and Earth could experience a near miss in the year 3044.

SMITH’S ROCKY FORD PRODUCE AND MELONS ARE HERE....

The Swift-Tuttle was first discovered in 1862 and last viewed in 1992, seen only through binoculars. It is due to return in 2126 and hopefully observers will be able to see it via the naked eye.

AND THEY’RE SWEET!

Hoba is the largest meteorite ever found on Earth. It is made of iron and weighs more than 60 tons. It was discovered in 1920 near a farm in Namibia in South Africa. Although it was huge, it didn’t create a crater in the earth’s surface. It entered the earth’s atmosphere at a shallow angle, supposedly slowed by the atmospheric drag.

The largest meteorite ever discovered in the United States is the Willamette meteorite, now housed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The meteorite, found in Oregon, weighs about 32,000 lbs. or 15.5 tons and is more than 91 percent iron and 8 percent nickel, with traces of cobalt and phosphorus. It is 10 feet tall by 6.5 wide and 4.25 feet deep.

Continued from Page 3 with Halley’s Comet. One of NASA’s deep space satellites was redirected to monitor the solar wind upstream from Halley. Halley’s Comet is one of only three that has been monitored by spacecraft. Its nucleus measures about 10 by 5 by 5 miles.

Ceres was the first asteroid discovered and is the largest in the main asteroid belt. A monk in Italy, Guiseppe Piazzi, discovered the asteroid. Ceres is named after the Roman goddess of the harvest, of growing plants and motherly love.

Astronomers have said that Ceres’ interior is loaded with frozen water. It is 580 miles in diameter – about the size of Texas – and accounts for 25 percent of the asteroid belt’s total mass.

METEOR SHOWERS Leonids is the largest meteor shower known. The Leonids shower is debris from the comet 55P/Temple-Tuttle.

The comet returns to the vicinity of the earth every 33 years, but its effects vary. In 1966, this meteor shower measured 150,000 (40 per second) over two hours – the heaviest shower ever recorded.

In February 1998, the comet TempelTuttle crossed Earth’s orbit again and the Leonids were highly anticipated.

Scientists expected a great showing, but it was light – about 1,000 meteors per hour.

on Hiroshima. The asteroid has passed extremely close to Earth, and it was detected only after the point of its closest approach – which brought near-Earth asteroids into the realm of politics and national safety.

• Arizona is home to a meteorite impact site near Winslow. About 50,000 years ago, a meteorite traveling at 26,000 mph collided with Earth. The result of the collision is a meteor crater that is today 1 mile across, 2.4 miles in circumference and more than 550 feet deep. Touted as the world’s best preserved meteorite impact site, the area has become an international tourist stop, with a gift and rock shop, widescreen movie theatre and outdoor observation trails.

On Friday, April 13, 2029, asteroid 2004 MN4 will pass Earth only 18,600 miles above the ground. The asteroid will be visible from the naked eye in Africa, Europe and Asia – even through city lights. It’s a close encounter, one that occurs on average every 1,000 years.

The 2004 MN4 asteroid is about 320 meters wide; and, if it hit land, it would devastate a region the size of Texas. If it hit the ocean, there would be widespread tsunamis. Asteroid 2004 MN4 was discovered in June 2004 and rediscovered again six months later.

Astronomers first thought the asteroid might hit Earth – NASA’s Near Earth Object Program office gave it a 1 in 60 chance of an impact with the earth. Approaches this close are thought to occur at 1,000-year intervals.

ost people have heard the phrases: “talk is cheap” or “walking the talk.” Many have also heard their parents say, “Do as I say, not as a I do.” All of these statements have been stated at one time or another, and we are familiar with their meanings. How many people walk the talk? Do you say you will do something and then have a tendency to not follow through?

There are varying reasons why people say one thing and do another. We can see it in adolescents. You may ask you teenager to take out the trash. He or she is on the couch occupied by the television or a video game. He or she states: “yeah, I’ll do it….” and 30 minutes later, the trash is still there. This is a common and simple example.

What about adults who say they will work on a particular issue and then do not? Perhaps it is finding a new job, career, home, relationship, or healing an emotional wound? The emotional wound can be fear, anxiety, anger, or depression. Maybe you see it in an adult who continues to take college courses without refining what the focus will be and that person finds difficulty in committing to one area of study? Perhaps it is a person who carries an addiction-whether it is to prescription medications, alcohol, street drugs, sugar, shopping, or another type of addiction does not matter. In

Many people say they desire change, but then resist it when they are confronted by actually making changes.

This comes down to fear. Many fear change because it breaks up the ‘status quo’ or it ‘rocks the boat’. I

t’s hot, and like many of you, one of my favorite ways to cool off is with a bowl of ice cream. Vanilla ice cream continues to be America’s flavor of choice. Ice cream’s origins are known to reach back as far as the second century B.C., although no specific date of origin or inventor has been indisputably credited with its discovery.

We know that Alexander the Great enjoyed snow and ice flavored with honey and nectar. Biblical references also show that King Solomon was fond of iced drinks during harvesting. During the Roman Empire, Nero Claudius Caesar (A.D. 54-86) frequently sent runners into the mountains for snow, which was then flavored with fruits and juices.

More than a thousand years later, Marco Polo returned to Italy from the Far East with a recipe that closely resembled what is now called sherbet. Historians estimate that this recipe evolved into ice cream sometime in the 16th century. England seems to have discovered ice cream at the same time, or perhaps even earlier, than the Italians. “Cream Ice,” as it was called, appeared regularly at the table of Charles I during the 17th century. It wasn’t until 1660 that ice cream was made available to the general public. The Sicilian Procopio introduced a recipe blending milk, cream, butter and eggs at Café Procope, the first cafe in Paris.

The first official account of ice cream in the New World comes from a letter written in 1744 by a guest of Maryland Governor William Bladen. Records kept by a Chatham Street, New York, merchant show that President George Washington spent approximately $200 for ice cream during the summer of 1790. President Thomas Jefferson’s slave chef, James Hemings, is said to have a favorite 18-step recipe for an ice-cream delicacy that resembled a modern-day Baked Alaska.

Around 1800, insulated ice houses were invented. Manufacturing ice cream soon became an industry in America, pioneered in 1851 by a Baltimore milk dealer named Jacob Fussell. Due to ongoing technological advances, today’s frozen dairy production in the United States is more than 1.6 billion gallons annually.

Wide availability of ice cream in the late 19th century led to new creations. In 1874, the American soda-fountain shop and the profession of the “soda jerk” emerged with the invention of the ice-cream soda. In response to religious criticism for eating “sinfully” rich ice-cream sodas on Sundays, ice-cream merchants left out the carbonated water and invented the ice-cream “Sunday” in the late 1890s. The name was eventually changed to “sundae” to remove any connection with the Sabbath.

1. In medium saucepan, beat together eggs, milk, sugar and salt.

Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick enough to coat a metal spoon with a thin film and reaches at least 160 F. Cool quickly by setting pan in ice or cold water and stirring for a few minutes. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, at least one hour.

2. When ready to freeze, pour chilled custard, whipping cream and vanilla into 1-gallon ice-cream freezer container. Freeze, according to manufacturer’s directions, until firm. Makes 1 1/2 to 2 quarts.

New DVD Releases for Week of August 30, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK Unless you’re champing at the bit to get “Marmaduke” on DVD, there really aren’t any notable movie releases this week. However, we are on the cusp of Back to School season, so to get you in the mood, here’s a list of some of classic school movies you might want to revisit: “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” (Unrated) -- Robert Donat won the Best Actor Oscar in 1939

(beating out James Stewart, Clark Gable and Laurence Olivier) for his performance as the headmaster of an English boarding school.

“Goodbye Mr. Chips” tells the story of Mr. Chipping, spanning his 50 years at the fictional school, from his first day as an unsure Latin teacher to a wizened old headmaster beloved by thousands. The enchanting Greer Garson made her first film appearance as Chipping’s young wife, who tragically dies in childbirth.

Although the film can be a little heavy-handed with sentimentality, it is a heartwarming and entertaining movie from Hollywood’s Golden Age that still holds up today.

“Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (Rated R) -- Before John Hughes showed up and ruined the teen movie genre (yeah, I said it!), there was “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” -- a film more true-to-life than anything that hack ever churned out. It also launched the careers of Cameron Crowe, Amy Heckerling, Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold and Jennifer Jason Leigh. And let’s face it, most guys from my generation saw that movie at least 10 times just for that scene

with Phoebe Cates coming out of the swimming pool wearing that awesome red bikini.

“Rock ‘N’ Roll High School” (Rated PG) -The Ramones bring down Vince Lombardi High School with the Power of Their Rock in this low-budget Roger Corman cult classic.

The acting is horrible, the jokes are cheesy, but it doesn’t matter. The movie has such a frantic, anarchic energy to it that you can’t stop watching.

“National Lampoon’s Animal House” (Rated R) -- The movie that spawned a thousand highschool cafeteria food fights and made John Belushi a movie star, “Animal House” is the greatest college comedy ever made. Its story about a fraternity of losers, slobs and outcasts getting revenge on the snooty rich kids has been used as a template for hundreds of films ever since.

“Back to School” (Rated PG-13) -- How can I do a Back to School feature and NOT include this Rodney Dangerfield comedy classic?

Rodney stars as Thornton Melon, a rich guy who returns to college in order to get closer to his son. He’s so rich he gets NASA and Kurt Vonnegut Jr. to do his homework for him. But Melon’s hijinks have a price, and he learns there are some things money can’t buy.

What steps can you take to help make sure your money is working hard for you? For starters, consider keeping the money you may need in the near future in investments that pay minimal rates of return. These investments can offer you liquidity — in other words, it’s no problem to get at your money when you need it.

But you can find some investments that offer liquidity and can pay a more attractive rate of return — investments that may work harder for you.

Another reason you may keep money in a low-rate investment is that such investments typically offer greater protection of principal than an investment such as a stock. And this is certainly true, because stock prices will always fluctuate, and the return of your principal is not guaranteed. Nonetheless, stocks have historically offered returns that have been higher than the inflation rate, although as you’ve no doubt heard, past performance is not a guarantee of future results. And if your investments do not keep up with inflation, you could lose significant purchas-

ing power over time.

Clearly, then, your goal should be to make sure your savings and investments are working hard for you without taking on more risk than you would like. And one of the greatest risks occurs when you have all your money tied up in just one type of investment. When a market downturn strikes a particular group of investments, and you have no other investments to help cushion the blow, your portfolio could take a sizable hit. One way to help lower your risk level is to spread, or diversify, your money among a range of investments, such as stocks, bonds and government securities. And while diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it can help you reduce the effects of volatility.

Another way to make sure your investments are working hard for you is to have them “multi-task.� Consider your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. Not only does your money have the opportunity to grow on a tax-deferred basis, which means it can accumulate faster than if it were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year, but also your contributions are generally made with pretax dollars, so the more you contribute, the lower your taxable income. Such “double duty� is a great way to keep your money working hard for you.

And the same principle may apply to your traditional IRA, assuming your income level qualifies you to make deductible contributions.

THE MARRIAGE ZONE: FIRST STEPS FOR DIVORCE

I

f you are seriously thinking about getting divorced, what steps can you take to start preparing?

Assuming minor children are not involved, your financial security should be your primary focus.

Once you are divorced, are you going to be able to support yourself, or are you going to need help? If you are going to need help, is your spouse going to be able to provide it? As is the case with all financial matters, it is important to be organized and disciplined. Your divorce will probably be the biggest business transaction you will ever be involved in.

You should have a good idea of how things will look after the transaction is completed.

Create a budget to determine your future financial needs. A good way to do this is to download the sworn financial statement (SFS) from the Colorado Courts website (go to self-help forms, domestic).

Each party in a divorce cases is required to file a sworn financial statement with the Court. The SFS is also an excellent budgeting tool for planning pur-

Keep in mind that there are certain actions you can take before the divorce is filed that are subject to an automatic temporary injunction after the case is filed.

For example, after the divorce is filed, your ability to transfer or dispose of marital property is restricted, except in the usual course of business or for the necessities of life, unless you get your spouse’s consent or a Court order.

Educate yourself about the process and your prospects. Knowledge is power! There is a lot of information available, especially on the internet. Try to be objective about your situation. Don’t put a lot of faith in stories you hear from others about their divorce. Each case is different. No one is exactly like you. After you have acquired some useful knowledge, you may want to consult with a family law attorney to make sure that you understand what you are getting into.

Get a job! It is likely that you are going to have to contribute to your own support. If you are unemployed or underemployed, get going! Take an inventory of your skills. Think about what you enjoy doing. Let folks know you are looking for work.

Start taking care of the nuts and bolts of being single again. Do you have credit in your own name? If you don’t, get some. Do you have accounts in your sole name? If not, open some. Download your credit report and get to work. Get rid of unnecessary credit cards. Close as many joint accounts as you can, including bank accounts. You don’t want to have joint

If divorce is unavoidable, start your preparation. The more work you put into it, the better the results.
