SNIPPETZ WANTS THE TRUTHTHE WHOLE TRUTH... IN E-MAIL by Deborah Stumpf

ISSUE 463 • SEPTEMBER 13, 2010

“The history of our race, and each individual’s experience, are sown thick with evidence that a truth is not hard to kill and that a lie told well is immortal.” - Mark Twain

A global warming activist froze to death in Antarctica (as posted on Fox Nation Web site in March 2010). Lie. July 2009: Journalist Betsy McCaughey reported that the “proposed Health Care bill requires that seniors be given euthanasia counseling every five years.” Lie. There’s an old saying: Don’t believe everything you hear – or, more likely today – don’t believe everything you read in your e-mails. Since 1988, on the third Saturday of September, people in the small town of New Harmony, Ind., gather for a Big Whopping Lie Contest. Contestants line up on stage and get about four minutes each to spin a big, tall tale. To piggyback on the Hoosier fib-fest, Snippetz investigated the world of Internet lies – those questionable e-mails with everything from President Obama’s religious affiliation to Mr. Rogers’ military career. Read on for a good dose of enlightenment.

HOAXES TO URBAN LEGENDS It’s best to clarify the type of fictional e-mails that could cause one to ponder, or pass on to unsuspecting recipients. Hoax: an act or document that is intended to deceive the public. April Fool’s pranks and chain letters are in this category. The word “hoax” is thought of as a contraction of “hocus pocus” – a phrase used by magicians to invoke magic spells. Rumor: the definition is not about falsehoods but a lack of proof. A rumor could be a report of statements that haven’t been verified, an opinion represented as fact, a bite of truth misrepresented or misunderstood so much that it creates a falsehood, exaggerations or intentional lies. Urban legend: a second-hand story – a tale believed to be true about a horrific or embarrassing or over-the-top, heart-stopping story that supposedly happened to one or more individuals. Although there is nothing to back up the story, the storyteller relies on “trustworthy” sources. “This really happened to my friend’s sister’s husband,” i.e. the ditzy grandmother who tried to dry her wet poodle in a microwave; of course, the dog exploded. This urban legend is false, but the legends can be true as well.

WHOM TO BELIEVE

Snopes.com is probably the best known Web site for discerning fact from fiction in the vast number of e-mails that bombard one’s inbox. About 300,000 people a day peruse the Snopes Web site to determine the authenticity of many an e-mail. David and Barbara Mikkelson run the site from their home in California. In an interview published in the New York Times, David Mikkelson said most of the rumors start out with a “kernel of truth” but somewhere along the way the truth gets increasingly distorted. Some people pass on e-

mails, whether rumor or urban legend, because they want to prove their point about something or someone, prove someone wrong; or they want to share their fears and anxieties with others. More times than not, the rumor reinforces prejudices against political parties and cultures. Far too many people don’t care about the truth. If an e-mail reflects a person’s belief system, he or she is likely to pass it on without checking further.

RECENT E-MAIL LIES E-mail: All cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies, which will allow them to make sales calls. Call the National Do Not Call Registry to add your cell number to the list. Truth: Not necessary – the Federal Trade Commission regulates telemarketers, and they are prohibited from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. E-mail: Do not answer calls from these numbers: 9888308001, 9316048121, 91+, 9876266211, 9888854137, 9876715587 The numbers have extremely high wave length and frequency. If a call is received on a mobile from these numbers, the high frequency can cause brain damage or even death. “It’s not a joke rather, it’s TRUE. 27 persons died just on receiving calls from these numbers.” Truth: Engineers say not true. This rumor started out in Pakistan, and was spread throughout India, the Middle East and Africa. It began as a Friday the 13th hoax. E-mail: Pepsi (or Coke) has a new line of patriotic soda cans with a picture of the Empire State Building, a flag and the words from the Pledge of Allegiance, however, the words “under God” have been omitted. The e-mails were calling for all Christians to boycott the bottling companies and send letters to them.

www.shelterinsurance.com Truth... In E-Mail... Continued from Page 2 Truth: False. The rumor started years ago when Dr. Pepper came up with a new can featuring the Statue of Liberty and these three words from the Pledge of Allegiance: “One Nation … Indivisible.” The cans were circulated right after Sept. 11 through March 2002. The words were chosen, according to Dr. Pepper, as they best represented a patriotic, bipartisan message promoting a united nation. Note: “Under God” was not an original part of the Pledge of Allegiance, written in 1892 by Frances Bellamy; it was added by an Act of Congress in 1954. The rumor has resurfaced lately in response to the anniversary of 9/11. E-mail: Hotel key cards contain all kinds of personal information, including credit card numbers. They can easily be scanned by employees, who in turn go shopping for free! Truth: The origin of this rumor came from an actual police officer in California, who heard another officer in another precinct say that he had run across a hotel key card from a major hotel with all kinds of personal information on it. Without verifying the information or checking with major hotels, the officer sent out an e-mail to other officers warning them of the possibility of identity theft through hotel key cards. From the mouths of hotel managers and front desk clerks to an investigation by Computerworld magazine, there is no such thing as a hotel key embedded with any kind of personal information.

Today’s parents have a million things on their minds. Safety in the home, although considered vital, is sometimes overlooked. For that reason, consider conducting the following home safety audit:

719.481.9600 www.secretwindowgallery.com

1. Proximity to windows: Furniture should not be placed near windows. Do accessible windows have safety guards? Are bushes planted beneath windows to break an accidental fall?

4. Meds & Chemicals: Medicines, household cleaners, matches and lighters need to be out of reach.

7. Alarms: Are fire, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every floor? 8. Water & Electrical: Set the thermostat of your hot water heater no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the chance of scalding. Do all electrical outlets have covers? 9. Emergency Game Plan: Can your children recite their address and phone number? Do they have a fire escape plan? Are emergency numbers posted for easy reference? Where is the First Aid kit? 10. Window Coverings: Is every window covering in your home designed with child safety in mind? Are there exposed loops that are not secured with a tension devise? Do window coverings have safety stops and are they properly positioned? If it is a stock blind, was the length of the product properly shortened? There are some good products out there that offer smart safety choices one of them being the Hunter Douglas products that have LiteRise, PowerRise, and Ultra-Glide operating systems which were designed specifically with child safety in mind. To find out more visit www.FlooringandDesignCenter.com.

any people live with spinal pain without finding out the cause of the pain. Some individuals attempt to find relief through traditional medicine, chiropractic care, and some try acupuncture. Any of these attempts may work at temporarily relieving the pain. However, the pain may re-materialize in a different part of the body or return to the spine because the cause was not uncovered.

do not match what the person wants to recall from childhood. I have seen this with people who do not remember abusive tendencies from a parent, but a sibling does. The two siblings do not share the same memories even though they are close in age and grew up in the same household. The person who does not consciously remember events from childhood suppresses those events in order to maintain a false memory of childhood. In this example, that person may experience spinal issues, because he or she is holding the energy of those memories in the spine.

B e n e t H i l l M o n a s t e r y - S e e k Pe a c e A n d P u r s u e It www.benethillmonastery.org bhmc@benethillmonastery.org In the Black Forest 3190 Benet Lane Colorado Springs, CO 719-633-0655

Another example can be that a person glosses over his or her childhood. He or she may remember some negative experiences, but glosses over them to avoid looking at the extent of emotional injury that was created. He or she may make statements of, “it was a long time ago; it does not matter anymore.” Some may state, “it’s just the way it was, can’t change it.” Both of these statements are

passive in nature and both are usually false unless the person has worked at healing the emotional injury that was created in childhood. Nothing simply goes away unless it has been addressed and resolved. Issues may remodel themselves over the years, but they do not just disappear because a certain number of years have passed. Ignoring the issues can create spinal pain.

memories of which the person needs to address; when they do surface. Assistance will be offered to help the person to understand how to work with suppressed memories.

A Tai Yi treatment for this is called Bamboo Spine. Bamboo Spine boosts the immune system and assists with spinal pain and spinal memories. This treatment can also bring up suppressed

Uncovering and healing the cause of any pain cannot be underestimated. If a person had a sharp splinter lodged in the skin that then caused an infection, the person could not simply take a pain reliever, forget about the infection, and expect it to heal. We live in a society where we have learned to expect instant gratification, which leads to quick ‘fixes’ that are not truly ‘fixes’. They are simply a delay of more pain. The spine carries the energy of memories and can reflect stress. When a person is under constant stress, he or she can hold that energy in the spine creating difficulty. Some have tried yoga and have found relief in back pain. Yoga assists a person in relieving stress as well as stretching and strengthening muscles. Chiropractic care can assist in spinal issues as well, however, if the cause is not identified one might find him or herself returning for chiropractic care for the same issue time and again. Many times spinal pain is caused by emotional issues unless the person has been involved in a physical accident that created spinal/muscle issues. Many times a person will suppress memories of events in childhood that

Overland later competed with the Pony Express until May 10, 1869, the day the first transcontinental railroad was completed. On that day, the U.S. government canceled its last overland mail contract. • On Sept. 17, 1884, Judge Allen disposes of the 13 criminal cases on his Oakland, Calif., docket in only six minutes. Although he apparently set a new record for speed, defendants in Oakland’s criminal court did not stand much of a chance of gaining an acquittal. In a 40-year period at the turn of the century, only 1 defendant in 100 was acquitted. • On Sept. 14, 1901, U.S. President William McKinley dies after being shot by a deranged anarchist during the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. When McKinley was operated on after being shot, doctors had failed to find the bullet,

and gangrene soon spread throughout his body. • On Sept. 16, 1940, Selective Service is born as Congress passes the Burke-Wadsworth Act, imposing the first peacetime draft in the history of the United States. By the end of World War II, approximately 34 million men had registered, and 10 million served with the military. • On Sept. 19, 1959, in one of the more surreal moments in the history of the Cold War, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev explodes with anger when he learns that he cannot visit Disneyland. Government authorities feared that the crowds would pose a safety hazard for the premier. • On Sept. 13, 1971, a four-day riot at Attica Prison in New York comes to a violent end as law-enforcement officials open fire, killing 29 inmates and 10 hostages and injuring many more. The prison insurrection was the bloodiest in U.S. history. • On Sept. 18, 1981, the 20,000-car parking lot at Canada’s West Edmonton Mall makes the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest parking lot in the world. However, in Dubai, a 40,000-space parking lot is under construction at a shopping center. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. Continue with heat, cold or alternating heat and cold, whichever gives you the most pain relief. Tylenol or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, etc.) can make you more comfortable.

MOST BACK PAIN STOPS ON ITS OWN DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 78-yearold, semiretired man. I am very active and look a lot younger. I work part-time as a truck driver delivering auto parts to garages. Now I am out of work because of pain in my lower back. The pain runs down to my foot. I have been diagnosed with sciatica. My doctor sent me for an MRI, and it showed a bulging disk. What is the best remedy? I use ice packs, heating packs and hot packs. I am on crutches to take pressure off my leg. Would surgery help? -- J.S. ANSWER: Back pain is one of the leading problems that send people to doctors. Most cases of back pain go away on their own, even if they’re due to things like a bulging (also called herniated or ruptured) disk. Even though your back hurts, you can be

If the pain doesn’t let up in six weeks, you have chronic back pain. Sciatica is pain that travels from the back down the leg to the foot. It comes from pressure on the sciatic nerve. In your case, the pressure most likely comes from your bulging back disk. Back disks are cartilage pads placed between adjacent backbones to absorb the shock those bones take from our walking, bending and pushing. The disk has a tough outer ring. Gelatinous material makes up the inner core. If there’s a break in the outer ring, the inner core pushes through -- a bulging, herniated or ruptured disk, whichever term you want to use.

DONOHUE: I can’t get rid of jock itch. I have tried over-the-counter medicines for the past six months. I still itch. What can I do? -- R.P. ANSWER: You can make certain that what you have really is jock itch, a fungal skin infection whose name is tinea cruris. A doctor can make the diagnosis for you by examining scrapings of the involved skin with a microscope. You might need

If sciatica doesn’t resolve on its own, a doctor can inject the back with cortisone to reduce inflammation. That can relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. The procedure is called an epidural. Surgeons, aided by a microscope, can remove the bulge through small incisions, about an inch long. This technique is called a microdiskectomy and usually is quite successful. The booklet on back problems covers this topic in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box

Winter Watering

Insufficiently watered plants often suffer root damage during Winter, and emerge looking healthy, but succumb to disease or insects. Plants and turf in south-facing or west-facing locations, especially near heat-reflecting structures, are particularly vulnerable to damage.

Planning for Spring

Here are some items to put on your Fall gardening "ToDo" list. When Spring arrives, you'll be glad you took these easy steps to help your garden come through winter ready to flourish. This is one of the most important secrets for a strong and healthy landscape. Even experienced Front Range gardeners often fail to water adequately through the Winter, only to find their trees, shrubs, perennials and lawns in crisis as Spring arrives.

While preparing for Winter, consider areas of your landscape to enhance or renovate next Spring. During the Winter, research plant varieties that can improve your landscape while conserving water.

Clean Existing Beds

Raking leaves as they fall will clear up areas were insects can thrive. Remove spent annuals while clearing weeds

to reduce habitat for overwintering pests. Perennials that have Winter interest or provide food for birds should remain uncut. If in doubt about what to cut back, just leave them until spring or until they begin to detract from your garden's appearance.

Plant and Transplant

This is a fantastic time to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials. Consider where you'd like to have spring flowering bulbs and plant them in September and October. This is the time to plan, purchase, and prepare to plant your tulips, daffodils, and hyacinth bulbs for spring. After you remove your spent summer annuals, get some pansies in for great fall color and early spring blooms. Divide and transplant perennials to enhance the health of your existing plants and provide more coverage with some of your favorites. Fall is a great time to plant and transplant since most plant energy goes into root development. With proper planting and care, plants that have developed healthy roots during the Fall and Winter are better prepared for Spring growth and Summer stress.

torney to draft up the final version. An attorney can advise you on the tax implications of any steps you want to take, as well as your state laws. For example, in many states the law outlines how much of the estate must be left to a spouse, or perhaps you need to create a trust. Find an executor. Be sure to ask if that person is willing to handle the details. Settling an estate can be time consuming (depending on how many debts you leave and how many property assets you own). You may need to find an attorney to act as executor. Granted, an attorney will have to be paid out of the estate, but in most situations that might be your best route.

EAT MORE TO WEIGH LESS

A

ccording to the annual “F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future” report for 2010, released by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Americans are losing the battle of the bulge. Elizabeth Pivonka is a registered dietitian and CEO of produce for the Better Health Foundation, the nonprofit entity behind the national public-health initiative “Fruits & Veggies -- More Matters.” Pivonka says that most adults don’t get the recommended servings of fruit and vegetables each day. “Eating more fruits and vegetables in place of options that are higher in fat and calories is an important step in losing weight and keeping it off. “Fruits and vegetables play important roles in the process of weight loss and weight maintenance,” says Pivonka. “Not only because they are low in calories, but also because they provide a wide range of valuable nutrients like vitamins and potassium. They also are high in fiber and water, so eating them will keep you feeling full longer. “Fruits and vegetables are the cheapest form of health insurance you can buy,” according to Pivonka, “since eating them may help reduce the risk of obesity and many diseases. Everyone can benefit from eating more fruits and vegetables, so fill at least half of your plate with them at every meal. There is no need to eat the same thing day after day when there are so many delicious fruits and veggies from which to choose. Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is easy when you remember that all product forms count -- fresh, frozen, canned, dried and 100 percent fruit and vegetable juice.” Here are some ways you can easily increase the amount of fruit and vegetables you consume each day: • Set out raw vegetables with dip to snack on before starting to prepare the evening meal. • Don’t forget about dried fruits and veggies! Keep a bag of your favorites in your handbag or in the car for those times when a craving strikes while you’re on the go. These also work well as fast additions to breakfast cereals or soups and stews. • Use a smaller plate, like an 8- or 9-inch luncheon plate, not a 10-12 inch dinner plate, and make sure to fill at least half of it with fruits and veggies at every meal. • Have fruit instead of processed sweets for dessert. Or try chocolate with your fruit instead of fruit with your chocolate!

• Keep a variety of canned fruits and vegetables on hand. They are pre-cooked as part of the canning process and need just a few seconds in the microwave or on the stove to heat up. Healthy and fast! • Add frozen vegetables to box meals to boost their flavor, color and nutrition. They won’t add to the cooking time, will make the meal go further, and you won’t have to fix an extra side dish. • Spend the few extra cents to buy fresh fruits and vegetables that are already washed and cut up, or buy larger bags and clean and cut them up yourself and put them into portion-controlled containers. Keep them on hand for ready-to-eat snacks, pack them into lunches and take them on car trips. • When shopping, let kids select a new fruit or vegetable for the whole family to try -- remember, all forms count: fresh, frozen, canned, dried and 100 percent juice!

In order to keep everyone honest (you know who you are,) we have moved the answers and solutions to the trivia and puzzles to the next page (17).

New DVD Releases for Week of September 13, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Feast” (Unrated) -- “Feast” is one of my guilty-pleasure movies, and it’s about time that an unrated, director’s cut of this 2005 low-budget horror movie gets its release. “Feast” was made as a part of the Ben Affleck/Matt Damon reality series “Project Greenlight” and features Judah Friedlander (“30 Rock”), Krista Allen (“Emmanuelle in Space”) and legendary cowboy actor

Clu Gulager as members of a ragtag group of seedy bar patrons who are attacked one night by bloodthirsty beasties. The gory effects are much better than you’d think they’d be, considering the paltry $1 million budget, and the performances are deliciously over-the-top. Features include audio commentary, outtakes and a making-of featurette. “Jacob’s Ladder” (R) -- If you enjoyed “Inception,” then you owe it to yourself to watch this 1990 psychological thriller starring Tim Robbins. Robbins stars as Jacob Singer, a Vietnam War veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. The affliction is so extreme that he finds himself hallucinating, reliving hellish moments from his war past and also experiencing nightmares while he’s awake. He begins to suspect that he is experiencing long-term side effects from an experimental battle

drug (code named “Ladder”) that was administered to his platoon. With the help and insight of a friendly chiropractor (Danny Aiello), Jacob finally is able to make sense of what he is going through, leading him and the film to its jarring conclusion.

WORTH A RENTAL “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” (PG13) -- Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Dastan, the titular prince who is accused of a murder he didn’t commit and is on the run along with his fiancee (Gemma Arterton) and a magical dagger that can manipulate Time. Based on a video game that was popular about 10 years ago, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” is a loud, silly, CGI-laden popcorn flick that has a few fun moments, but is ultimately a pretty forgettable film -- OK for a rental, but certainly not a DVD for your library.

MVEA has a new look!

hen you were in school, you had to concentrate on your studies. When you began your career, you had to concentrate on your work. In fact, in just about every endeavor in life, concentration is essential for success. However, as an investor, you may find that you actually don’t want to concentrate too much. That’s not to say you shouldn’t concentrate on your investment decisions — you should. But if you concentrate too much money in one investment, or one type of investment, you could run into problems. Suppose, for example, that your portfolio is almost entirely devoted to growth stocks. During a good economy, growth stocks generally tend to do well, so if we’re enjoying a period of sustained growth, your portfolio might show some good returns. But if the economy slumps while you own only growth stocks, you could sustain losses that may take a long time from which to recover. On the other hand, if you over-concentrate on fixed-income investments, such as bonds, your principal value might increase when interest rates are falling (as interest rates and bond prices are inversely related), but when interest rates rise, your bond portfolio will likely lose principal value. To help avoid the problems of overconcentration, it’s important to own a range of investments, which may include stocks, bonds, government securities and certificates of deposit (CDs). While this type of diversification cannot, by itself, guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility

on your portfolio. Of course, how you choose to allocate your assets will depend on a variety of factors, including the following: Your goals — Your ultimate objectives should help govern your investment strategy. If you are planning to retire early and then start a new business, you may need to invest more aggressively than, say, your neighbor, who wants to work as long as possible and then stay close to home, pursuing inexpensive hobbies. Your risk tolerance — Just as we all have different personalities, we have different tolerances for investment risk. If you can assume greater risk in exchange for potentially higher returns, you may be a more aggressive investor. Conversely, if you’re willing to take lower returns as a trade-off for greater protection of your principal, you’re probably a more conservative investor. However, to achieve your goals, you may consider moving outside your investment “comfort zone from time to time. Your time horizon — Your stage of life will also affect your investment choices. If you are just starting your career, you can probably afford to invest more aggressively than if you are nearing retirement, at which time you may want to cut down on risks. To build a diversified portfolio that reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you may want to work with a professional financial advisor — someone who can assess your situation and recommend choices that are appropriate for your needs. By concentrating on a unified investment strategy — instead of over-concentrating on a specific type of investment — you can focus on where you want to go and what you need to do to get there. THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

YOU’D BETTER THINK – THINK! – BEFORE BUYING PROPERTY TOGETHER © August, 2010, Lisa Welch Stevens, Esq.

I apologize to Queen Aretha for stealing her song lyrics – BUT, if you are thinking about buying real property with anyone other than a spouse, you’d really better think carefully about doing it all and, more importantly, about how you are going to take title the property. A family member’s situation has recently made me think about this issue A LOT. My relative married a person who had previously been engaged to another, more than three years ago. While he was engaged to that third party, he and she bought a house together and, worse, had it titled in both their names as joint tenants, not tenants in common, even though they were not yet married. (But, hey! They were going to get married, right? So no problem! Right? – Uhh, no, WRONG!). They broke up; he moved out of state. They then rented the house to others, with the rent payments covering the mortgage payments, so everything was okay, right? Uhh, no. Miss Former Fiancee evicted the tenants (without Mr.

Former Fiance’s knowledge), and moved in. By herself. Demanding that Mr. Former Fiance make the mortgage payments even though she was the one living in the house. Ms. Former Fiancee also refused to cooperate in selling the property. One of the problems with owning property as joint tenants is that each of the joint tenants has an undivided fifty percent (50%) interest in the entire property and, if one joint tenant dies, that tenant’s interest is completely extinguished, and the surviving joint tenant now has an undivided one hundred percent (100%) interest in the entire property. This is all well and good if the joint tenants are married to each other – that is probably what you would want to happen. However in this case Mr. Former Fiance is married to my relative and off to Afghanistan, not the safest place in the world. In addition, when Miss Former Fiancee learned Mr. Former Fiance was now married to another, she threatened to bring all sorts of legal trouble down on his head if he did not sign over all of his interest in the property to her. The second problem, whether you own property with another as joint tenants or tenants in common, arises when the owners cannot agree on who will pay for what, or whether to sell the property, rent it out, etc. How do you resolve the deadlock? When married couples are in disagreement they work it out or divorce, in which case the divorce court decides everything for them. I solved my family member’s problem by, first of all, sev-

ering the joint tenancy between the two Former Fiance(e) s, converting the joint tenancy into a tenancy in common. This solved the potential inheritance problem. We simply had Mr. Former Fiance quitclaim his interest in the property to his new wife, and then she quitclaimed it back to him the very next day. The property is still in his name, together with Miss Former Fiancee, but titled as tenants in common, each with a divided fifty percent (50%) interest in the property. (We had to quitclaim from spouse to spouse in order to avoid State of Maine real property transfer taxes; we could not have Mr. Former Fiance quitclaim to himself, which I would have done if the property had been in Colorado). We recorded the quitclaim deeds with the county clerk and recorder for the county where the property is located. Second, we are filing a legal action for partition of the property; i.e., for a court order against Miss Former Fiancee to either buy out Mr. Former Fiance, or to cooperate in selling the property. We will see how this plays out. This article is intended for informational purposes only; please contact your legal advisor regarding your particular situation.
