IT ALL STARTED IN THE 1700S On Friday, Oct. 13, 1775, the United States Continental Congress voted to outfit two sailing vessels with crews of 80 men and plenty of ammunition and send them to sea for three months in search of ships supplying ammunition to the British Army in America. After the War of Independence, the ships of the “Continental Navy” were sold. In 1789, the Constitution was amended to give Congress the power to maintain a Navy.

loss of life in a single battle – almost 5,000 were killed and an equal number wounded. The U.S. 10th Army, comprised of 183,000 Army, Navy and Marine personnel, lost 7,613 men during the 82 days of battle. More than 30,000 men were wounded. The battle become known as Operation Iceberg and is thought of in many Navy circles as the Pacific War’s biggest battle. • During the Korean War, the only real naval action involving an American warship took place on the East Coast, when North Korean torpedo boats attacked the cruisers of the USS Juneau, the HMS Jamaica and the frigate HMS Black Swan. • In October 1962, President John F. Kennedy imposed a quarantine on Cuba, and Navy cruisers the USS Newport News and USS Canberra were among the vessels sent to Cuba to block the entry of Soviet offensive weapons. • In August 1965, the Marines initiated their first large-scale amphibious assault in Vietnam on the Van Tuong Peninsula. They were supported by Marine air and naval gunfire from the cruiser, the USS Galveston, and two destroyers. Called Operation Starlite, it was the largest battle that Americans had fought since the Korean War. • On Oct. 11, 1972, 19 sailors were killed and 10 wounded by an explosion on the all-gun cruiser USS Newport News during a firing mission off the coast of Vietnam. HISTORIC BATTLES • The Battle of Leyte Gulf is the largest naval battle in history. In October 1944, U.S. troops invaded the island of Leyte in an attempt to isolate Japan from countries they occupied in Southeast Asia and to rob Japan’s forces of oil supplies. In response, the Imperial Japanese navy mobilized almost all of its naval vessels in an attempt to defeat the invasion. However, the U.S. Navy’s third and seventh fleets thwarted the attack, and Japan suffered heavy losses in both lives and ships. Because of the attack and the loss of oil, the Imperial navy was docked for the rest of World War II. • The Battle of Okinawa was one of the most devastating battles during World War II. The U.S. Navy lost an historical 36 ships, and 368 were damaged. The Battle of Okinawa handed the Navy its largest

BY SEA, BY AIR, BY LAND In 1962, President Kennedy established a small but elite maritime military force. They would carry out clandestine, small-unit and high-impact missions – unconventional warfare under the U.S. Special Operations Command. All military operations would originate from and return to a river, ocean, swamp, delta or coastline. The team of hardy men would operate by sea, by air and by land – they would be called the SEALS. The SEALS have become the military’s upper crust – disciplined men who are powered by mental and physical capabilities that extend way beyond the norm. The teams partake in, among other operations, direct action initiatives, terrorism combat, special reconnaissance, information warfare, drug warfare and personnel recovery. The SEALS are trained to operate in all environments and extreme climates, from desert to humid jungles to freez-

More than 200 new ships were built after the Civil War and another 418 were purchased. The types of ships – like ironclads and river steamers – determined the names. Brooklyn, Stars and Stripes, Penguin were some of the early names. Some ships were given names of American Indian origin, such as Owasco and Saugus.

They train and meditate with each passing day. They skateboard some, and they know the cute local news reporter. Then, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles do what any slimy hybrid super hero would do after a long day of defending the human race‌ they order Pizza. Pizza is the food of ninjas. Tai Yi means Supreme Movement and is an ancient form of Chinese energy work that is similar to acupuncture and can assist in many ailments.

Benedictine Spiritual Fo r m a t i o n

turbanek1@msn.com • www.empowermentthroughhealing.com • Monument, CO

Tai Yi is quite significant in that it utilizes all meridians of the body and each energy treatment is specific to an identified difficulty. Tai Yi works with the core of the problem rather than simply treat the symptom. Tai Yi is not appropriate for everyone, however. Everyone is different and is on different levels of self-awareness. Many people desire to simply work with what they know and stay within a set of beliefs and traditions that have been a part of the family unit for generations. Some people have tried that avenue and have not found success and desire to attempt something different. Neither of these choices is right or wrong, they simply lead to different outcomes. Some individuals want a quick fix and want to be healed rather than do the work of healing. This is not wrong either. However, wanting to “be healed” will not work with Tai Yi.

ife Energy Flow Tai Yi is a hands-on energy healing practice. Tai Yi (means supreme balance in English) utilizes the many meridians of the body, many of which acupuncture utilizes, and creates an opening in the body that allows a person to more easily work on healing a mental, emotional, and physical difficulty. Tai Yi has over 4,000 treatments.

titioner will select a treatment that is appropriate. The person receiving the treatment lies on a massage table, fully clothed, and the practitioner places light pressure along specific points on the body according to the treatment. This is called the grid. The grid is like a map that will direct the energy. The practitioner then sends energy to the same points on the grid for specific period of time. The person receiving the treatment must be willing to accept the energy AND utilize the energy for the next three to seven days. The practitioner will give directions on how to do this. If the person does not desire to utilize the energy, work with any emotions and/ or memories that surface then the energy will dissipate and not fully work to its potential. That is why Tai Yi is not for everyone. If the person does not desire to work at creating change, Tai Yi will not work.

Given that information, a new advanced treatment is available, called Fire of the Brain. Fire of the Brain is for individuals who have had longterm anger and/or depression. It is also for those who have had drug abuse in the past (and have ended the drug abuse). Long-term anger, depression, and drug abuse leads to difficulties with the neurotransmitters in the brain. The brain misfires and toxins build up in the brain. As a result, one can develop lack of focus, confusion, fogginess, and do attempt at healing the issues, but may find difficulty in doing so.

Fire of the Brain does release brain toxins and can assist with those who have autism. It does not do very much for those with Alzheimer’s since aluminum on the brain can cause Alzheimer’s symptoms. MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari, the archetype of the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad at Vincennes outside of Paris. She first came to Paris in 1905 and found fame as a performer of exotic Asian-inspired dances, claiming to have been born in a sacred Indian temple. In reality, Mata Hari was born in a small town in northern Holland in 1876, and her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. • On Oct. 11, 1925, novelist Elmore Leonard is born in New Orleans. His book “Hombre” (1961) was voted one of the best 25 Westerns of all time by the Western Writers of America. His first mystery, “The Big Bounce” (1969), was rejected by 84 publishers before it was published as an original paperback. • On Oct. 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion and fined $80,000. Elliot Ness and his “Untouchables” routinely broke up Capone’s bootlegging businesses, but it was tax-evasion charges that finally stuck and landed Capone in prison.

• On Oct. 12, 1945, Army Pfc. Desmond T. Doss of Lynchburg, Va., is presented the Congressional Medal of Honor for outstanding bravery as a medical corpsman, the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the nation’s highest military award. • On Oct. 13, 1953, the world’s first art museum on wheels opens in Fredericksburg, Va. It was called the Artmobile, a $20,000, 34-foot-long air-conditioned trailer with museum-quality lighting. The trailer was pulled around the state behind an enormous blue truck. • On Oct. 14, 1968, U.S. Defense Department officials announce that the Army and Marines will be sending about 24,000 men back to Vietnam for involuntary second tours because of the length of the war, high turnover of personnel and the tight supply of experienced soldiers. • On Oct. 16, 1976, “Disco Duck” hits the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts. Created by bored drive-time radio disc jockey Rick Dees, the song got airplay in every town except Memphis, where Dees had his radio show. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

the word is from the Greek “dipso,” meaning “thirst” -- and we’re all familiar with the “mania” part. “Dipsomaniac” is just a fancy name for a drunk. • You may be surprised to learn that 43 percent of 6- to 9-year-old girls use lip gloss. Of course, if you’re a parent of a young girl, you may not be surprised at all.

• It was American author and futurist Alvin Toffler who made the following sage observation: “Profits, like sausages, are esteemed most by those who know least about what goes into them.” • In honor of October being National Pizza month, here are a few statistics: Approximately 3 billion pizzas are sold every year in the United States. Seventeen percent of all the restaurants in the country are pizzerias. If you’re like 93 percent of Americans, you eat at least one pizza every month. Pepperoni is the most popular topping, followed by sausage, mushrooms, onions and olives. And a Gallup poll found that kids between the ages of 3 and 11 would choose pizza over any other food for lunch or dinner.

• A newly married couple sued the upscale resort in Chile where they spent their honeymoon when a swim in the pool turned the bride’s waist-length blond hair green. • The oldest known skis were found, perhaps unsurprisingly, in Scandinavia. The experts say the skis were made about 4,000 years ago. • If you live in the state of Minnesota, you might want to keep in mind that it’s against the law to sleep with no clothes on. *** Thought for the Day: “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. SNIPPETZŽ HEALTH AND WELLNESS It’s also normal for older people, given a sufficient amount of time, to recall the events of the preceding day or of special occasions. They might, on occasion, find it difficult to come up with a particular word, but they should be able to continue to perform tasks like balancing a checkbook. They might misplace things, as we all do. However, they can institute a search in an orderly and methodical way. It’s not normal to forget an entire event even when they are given promptings of what has happened. Misplacing things because the things have been put in strange places isn’t normal. An example is putting the car keys in the refrigerator.

WHAT ARE SIGNIFICANT LAPSES OF MEMORY? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother is 69 and has, during the past few years, shown signs of memory problems. In the span of 20 minutes, she might ask the same question several times. She has trouble following the flow of conversation. I am concerned she might be forgetting her medicines. I called her physician and was told that until she forgets what things like toasters are used for, there is no real concern. Isn’t early intervention a key to treating Alzheimer’s? -- M.K.

Neurologists, geriatricians (doctors who specialize in the treatment of the elderly), psychiatrists and psychologists administer tests that more precisely reflect a person’s memory and thinking capabilities. Having your mother tested isn’t a bad idea, and she should not take offense at the suggestion.

Four medicines constitute the bulk of prescriptions written for Alzheimer’s disease. They are Aricept, Razadyne, Exelon and Namenda. The first three are usually prescribed for the early stages of this illness. None is a cure. ANSWER: With age, it takes more time They can slow its progression. Dozens to retrieve information from the memo- of new medicines are currently under ry than it does in youth. That’s normal. investigation.

The booklet on Alzheimer’s describes this illness and its treatment in understandable terms. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I haven’t seen anything in your column about fungus foot infection. We have several family members who have it on their toes. How does it start, and what can be done for it? -- Anon. ANSWER: I have to believe you’re referring to athlete’s foot, the most common kind of fungal foot infection. Few people pass through life without an encounter with the fungi of athlete’s foot. The infection spreads through contact with shed skin that contains the fungus.

www.gypsywindranch.com www.boyercounseling.com

719-210-0668 or

laurel@gypsywindranch.com

Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments. A change of socks twice a day and wearing an alternate pair of shoes on successive days keep the feet dry. Antifungal foot medicines abound and come as ointments, creams or lotions. It can take a month or more for results. After the skin has healed, continue to apply the medicine for another two weeks. If over-the-counter medicines -- Micatin, Lotrimin AF and Tinactin are a few names -- don’t put an end to the infection, prescription medicines can. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2010 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

his is very sneaky. If you go into the hospital and then have nursing-home care, Medicare might not pay for that care if you didn’t stay in the hospital long

Sometimes a doctor will send you to the hospital, and you’ll be observed for a day or two to see if you should really be admitted. It seems that a criteria program called InterQual makes decisions about this. Its web page says that InterQual is “the undisputed gold standard in evidence-based clinical decision support. Isn’t that nice. Whatever happened to our doctors deciding how sick we are?

And how do you know what your status is? You have to ask. Theoretically, you could stay in observation mode for weeks and never actually be admitted. Medicare considers that to be outpatient care, and it won’t pay for all you get while you’re in the hospital. Any nursing-home care you need after that won’t be paid for by Medicare unless you’ve spent three days in the hospital as an actual admitted patient. A Medicare pamphlet says: “If you’re in the hospital more than a few hours, always ask your doctor or the hospital staff if you’re an inpatient or an outpatient. And no matter how long you’re “observed, that time doesn’t count toward a genuine inpatient

basic ingredients you have on hand widens the variety of what you can cook at a moment’s notice. Stock up on great “pantry basics”: Varieties of canned beans, green and black olives, varieties of pasta and bottled sauces, boil-in-bag brown rice, ethnic spice rubs, prepared salsa and canned fruits such as pineapple, pears and peaches are great basic “go to” items for family meals. Keep it simple: Simplicity is a main ingredient when cooking up family meals. Pull from the “pantry basics,” then add your own twist to create a unique and flavorful dish. Shop smarter: Breaking bulk purchases into smaller, more usable portions is a great way to efficiently make use of sale items. Estimate what you will use in the next few days and freeze the rest. This works especially well for large packages of meat, such as bulk-pack pork chops or tenderloins.

MAKE MEAL TIME, FAMILY TIME

C

oordinating food, family members and frantic schedules isn’t easy. Every busy cook knows that pulling it all together at dinnertime is a challenge! One way to bond with your loved ones and save time is to make cooking dinner a family affair. It’s best to involve the whole family with the planning, purchase and preparation of meals. There’s little truth to the adage “there are too many cooks in the kitchen,” especially when it’s time to eat. Here are some sure-fire tips for ways you can plan ahead to make mealtime a fun, family time: Find age-appropriate tasks for kids: Gathering ingredients, measuring, mixing or setting the table are wonderful ways to involve every member of the family with meal preparation. Encourage family interaction: Planning the weekly menu and grocery shopping are tasks that the whole family can help with. Keep cooking basics on hand: Broadening the range of

Use one-step flavor boosters: Canned tomatoes, bottled dressings, pre-packaged rubs, seasonings and dried herbs are easy ways to create flavorful new dishes using the same pantry and freezer staples.

New DVD Releases for Week of October 11, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“How to Train Your Dragon” (PG) -- The reason Dreamworks’ animated films don’t reach the same level of quality as Pixar’s is that all too often, the humor is derived from lame pop-culture references rather than from the characters’ personalities or their situation. In “How to Train Your Dragon,” Dreamworks has finally gotten it right and made an animated family film that is funny and heartwarming, with the same timeless, classic feel we get when watching, say, “Toy Story” or “Monsters, Inc.”

The film centers around a Viking boy named Hiccup who would rather tinker with his inventions than join his fellow Vikings in fighting the dragons that attack their village. One day Hiccup, using one of his inventions, accidentally brings down a young dragon. Instead of killing the beast, he befriends it and names it Toothless. Because humans and dragons are supposed to be mortal enemies, and this is a family film, it is mandatory that everyone must learn A Valuable Lesson About Friendship and Family. I really liked this movie. The flying scenes are breathtaking, the voice acting by Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara and Craig Ferguson is well-done, and the film zips along at a jaunty pace. Check it out. “The Hangover” (Extreme Edition) (R) -- For cryin’ out loud, this movie has more versions than “Blade Runner.” This “Extreme Edition” is the third release of the film this year. What’s different? Nothing. It’s the same movie you saw in the theater, only this time it includes a 28-page book of racy photos from Stu’s camera and the “missing wedding album,” more outtakes and a

gag reel and some other junk thrown in to separate rubes from their cash. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the movie was funny, but this DVD release is nothing but a shameless grab for more cash. “Christmas Classics Gift Set” (Unrated) -- Four classic TV holiday favorites: “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer,” “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Frosty Returns” are bundled in this affordable three DVD set (also available on Blu-Ray).

DOG OF THE WEEK

“Jonah Hex” (PG-13) -- Not only is “Jonah Hex” the worst movie of the year, but at 72 minutes, it’s also the briefest (thankfully). Josh Brolin stars as the titular Hex, a cowboy with a mutilated face who’s out to avenge the brutal murder of his family -- until President Grant recruits him to hunt down John Malkovich, an evil dude lookin’ to destroy the U.S. Capitol with a super weapon invented by Eli Whitney. For a comic-book movie that’s barely an hour long, you’d expect it to be wall-to-wall action. No dice. It’s mostly grizzled dudes standing

18

around talking. BUT, despite this being boring for the most part, there is one scene that is actually uber-cool. Jonah Hex has the power to resurrect the dead. So in one scene, he kills a dude, immediately resurrects the bad guy and then PUNCHES HIM SO HARD THE BAD GUY EXPLODES INTO A BAJILLION WEE FLAMES. The movie is garbage, but that scene is totally badass.

OCTOBER 11, 2010 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your moodier side might emerge this week. But the dark period should pass in time for the party-loving Lamb to go on a happy gambol with some very special people this weekend.

SPORTS QUIZ ANSWERS

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Yet again, you show your skill at being able to indulge in your love of the arts this week while still taking care of practical matters, including some still-unfinished business matters.

1. Three times (1968, ‘69 and ‘73). 2. Four consecutive years (1962-65). 3. It was 1966. 4. Brad Daugherty and Austin Carr. 5. Glenn Hall, in 1956. 6. Jamie McMurray (Daytona 500) and Dario Franchitti (Indianapolis 500). 7. Gaston Gaudio.

FLASH BACK ANSWERS 1. Barry White in 1974. The song hit the top of both the pop and R&B charts. 2. Bob Dylan. The 1966 song has been covered by others, notably The Byrds and The Animals. 3. Queen, 1980. Freddie Mercury wrote the song, as well as “We Are the Champions.” 4. It doesn’t exist. The heavy-metal band never saw a No. 1 until their album “Killing Machine” rose to the top in 1978 -- in Finland and France. 5. Born Fabiano Anthony Forte, his song “Tiger” reached No. 3 on the charts in 1959. It was his all-time biggest hit. Fabian’s film career was more lucrative, starting with “Hound Dog Man” in 1959. 6. Apparently from a toy ad: There was a doll called a Goo Goo, which came complete with a four-piece crib set and matching comforter.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A potential change might appear to be what you’ve been looking for. In any event, consider both the negative as well as the positive possibilities before making any sort of decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Relationships continue to dominate your aspect this week on a mostly positive level, with just a few problem areas you can smooth over. Also, try to be flexible about travel plans. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You love being on center stage, and while you absolutely purr at the sound of all that praise, be careful not to take on too many commitments at the expense of time spent with loved ones. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might feel that you need to get involved in a matter concerning a friend or relative. But while the issues appear to be cut and dried, they might not be. Get more facts before you act.

19

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While potential career changes warrant your interest, don’t ignore current job responsibilities. A personal relationship can also benefit from more of your attention. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t guess at what the facts might be if you hope to make the best decision possible. The wise course is to ask direct questions and act on the answers you get. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your efforts involving that pesky problem should soon show positive signs of being resolved. This would allow you to shift some of your focus in another direction. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) While you enjoy well-deserved praise for getting a difficult job done, there’s no time to relax. A new challenge looms. Expect more support from a once-strong critic. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still have explaining to do about your decision, but support grows as you continue to make your case. You also might want to start making plans for the upcoming holidays. BORN THIS WEEK: You insist on making decisions based on facts, not on popular opinions. Have you considered a career in science? Win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. or Steamboat Springs

Mountain View Electric Association is sending one student to the Annual Washington, D.C. Youth Tour in June and two students to the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp near Steamboat Springs, Colorado in July.

In less than two weeks, United Nations Day will be celebrated. It’s an occasion to highlight and reflect on the work of the United Nations, whose mission is to promote understanding and cooperation among the world’s countries. Of course, in an era of instantaneous communications and speedy global travel, we are all connected much more closely than ever before. And that’s certainly true in the financial markets, too, because as an investor, you’ve got a world full of opportunities. Many people, however, still think the U.S. totally dominates the investment scene. But the fact is that U.S. stock markets make up less than half of the total global stock market value, according to the Census Bureau. And that should come as no surprise to you when you consider many of the products you use on a daily basis, from the Hyundai (South Korea) you drove to work to the Nestle Crunch bar (parent company in Switzerland) you snacked on at lunch to the Sony television (Japan) you watch at night. Not only are many strong companies based in the developed countries, but some emerging markets — countries such as China, India, Brazil and Mexico that are characterized by younger, less mature economies — are growing rapidly, which may produce good investment opportunities. Keep in mind, though, that emerging markets do involve investment risks different from those of more developed countries. Securities may be less liquid and more volatile because economic structures are generally less diverse and mature. And by investing internationally, you can gain another key benefit — improved diversification. If you only in-

vested domestically, and a downturn hits us, your portfolio will likely take a hit. But, at any given time, international markets may perform quite differently than the U.S. market. Consequently, if you expanded your investment horizon beyond U.S. borders, your foreign investments could be doing relatively well, even if your American investments were lagging. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee profits or protect against loss, though it may be able to help reduce the effects of volatility. While you can gain some benefits by investing internationally, you’ll also need to consider the risks, such as political risk. For example, new governments can come in, nationalize companies, drastically change policies or rules affecting commerce, or take other actions that could have a big effect on your investments. You might also encounter currency risk — that is, changes in the value of the U.S. dollar, relative to foreign currencies, could negatively affect the value of your investments. Another factor to consider is the difference in accounting standards between the U.S. and other countries, a difference that can result in difficulty analyzing the true value and performance of foreign investments. You can enhance your portfolio’s diversification without investing a lot abroad. If you are considering international investments you may want to limit the foreign exposure to no more than 20 to 25 percent of your overall portfolio, with the exact amount depending on your individual risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals. Also, given the more complex issues involved in international investing, you’ll want to consult with a professional financial advisor before taking action. But once you’ve done your “due diligence, don’t be afraid to launch your voyage to the world of international investing. You might like what you see on your journey. CASH IN ON CLUTTER

f you know you’ll need extra cash for the holidays, consider this: There is cash in clutter. By beginning now to unload the clutter, you can accomplish two things: getting rid of extras that could be stifling you, and making a little extra money. Where’s the clutter? It’s potentially everywhere. Consider consigning clothing you haven’t worn in two years, and sell toys the children don’t play with anymore. Have you done a lot of “retail therapy” either in stores or at yard sales, bringing home knick-knacks you end up dusting every week? Old watches, musical instruments, iPods and mp3 players may

If you have multiple computers, your old reject might be just the thing for someone else. The same goes for your older monitors and keyboards. If you’ve amassed a large collection of videos and DVDs (that no one ever watches anymore), sell them and clear up some space. The same goes for books and craft items or hobby supplies that looked appealing when you bought them. If you have far too many inherited items that you’ve kept out of a sense of obligation, consider whether it’s time to let them go. For items that could be valuable, get an appraisal as to their worth. The biggest clutter sign of all is if you rent a storage unit to hold the excesses of your life. If you’ve had that unit for more than six months and haven’t visited it, that’s a sure sign that you can live without the contents. Spend a few weekends going through the boxes you’ve stored to see what you can sell. Not only will you pocket the cash, but you might be able to downsize to a smaller unit if there are items you absolutely must store. Even if you hire an online auction company to take care of the actual pric-

ftentimes, business owners get so wrapped up in selling their products and services that they forget to take the time to ensure they are managing their cash flow and receiving the money for those sales. But when it comes to your bottom line, you would be wrong to simply focus on total sales dollars - You also need to focus on the cash collection of those sales. To help keep that money coming through your door on a consistent basis, here are seven tips that if used, can go a long way to helping you improve your cash flow… 1. Require a down payment on projects so that your customers fund the project - not you. 2. Set your terms to be payment in full upon completion. Do not extend out 30 or 60 days after you have completed your work. You do not get to use your hard-earned cash until payment is received from your clients, so get it as soon as you can. 3. Negotiate terms with your vendors for 30 days or more so you have an opportunity to complete the work. Bill your customers and receive payments prior to paying

your vendor. 4. Have a collection process in place… and follow through. Remember, when your customers delay payments, they are using your cash. You need to ensure that you are being diligent in collecting from your customers. 5. Set up a line of credit at your bank that you can use in case of an emergency. Often, lenders rates will be less than the late fees your vendors charge. This line of credit will help you cover a lapse in cash flow for short periods of time. 6. Factoring of your receivables allows you to sell your receivables and get cash now instead of waiting 30 or 60 days. There is a fee for using a factoring service, so you need to ensure that the benefits of getting cash today exceeds the cost you will pay for that expedience.

The Palmer Lake Historical Society Presents

“Julia Archibald Holmes”

J

oin the Palmer Lake Historical Society for an informative and entertaining evening as Kathy Sturdevant relates the life and times of Julia Archibald Holmes, the first white woman to climb Pikes Peak. Over 150 years ago, on August 5, 1858, Julia, then a 20-year-old newlywed, her husband, and a group of miners climbed to the summit of Pikes Peak. Holmes was the first recorded woman to climb the mountain, and was the first known woman to climb a “fourteener,” or14,000-foot mountain, in Colorado. It was 23 years before another woman would climb a “fourteener.” Before climbing Pikes Peak, the group had traveled over 500 miles from Lawrence, Kansas, across the Great Plains headed to the Central City gold fields. The group first saw the mountain on June 28, as they neared Fort Bent. Holmes was a women’s rights activist and wore bloomers on her hike to the Peak’s summit. Bloomers were a symbol of women’s liberation in the 1850s, and consisted of a short skirt worn over a pair of loose trousers. Upon reaching the summit, Holmes documented the majestic view in several letters, one to her mother. This program is free to the public. Refreshments will be served. Visit our website at www.palmerdividehistory. org. WHEN: Thursday, October 21, 2010, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Doors open at 6:30pm. THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

CHOOSING A BANK FOR YOUR SMALL BUSINESS: WHAT IS THE BEST BANK? LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS © September, 2010, Lisa Welch Stevens, Esq.

A

fter forming or organizing your business, the immediate next step is to open a separate banking account for that business. The number one mistake small business owners make is to run business transactions through an existing account, whether their personal account or an account for another, existing business of theirs or family members. From the legal liability point of view, and well as from a tax and accounting point of view, separate people and entities should have separate bank accounts.

In my experience local community banks do not force your account into overdraft; instead, they process all deposits presented first, and then process the debits. In addition, my experience has been that the local community banks will also notify you in advance of a potential overdraft situation, permitting you to deposit or transfer funds that same day to avoid overdraft fees.

While a bank’s desire to increase revenues by forcing overdrafts, or denying credit, may be understandable, the result can be serious for a small business. You can face legal liability for dishonored instruments; if you are in a regulated industry or business, overdrafts can potentially lead to the loss of licenses and permits necessary to conduct your business. Your business and personal credit rating can be very negatively impacted. And, if you, in the course of your business, accept customer or client deposits or retainers, and the bank draws on those funds to satisfy their fees, you may face regulatory or statutory penalties, or legal liability.

Selecting a bank for your business is a very important decision, which can have serious legal implications. A bank should not be selected simply on the basis of geographical convenience, number of branches, or how large it is. After 13 years of experience as a small business attorney, in Denver, Tri-lakes, and Colorado Springs, it is my recommendation to my clients to choose a local, community bank over the large national banking associations. This is based on legal reasons, as well as business reasons.

If you have a problem with a large bank, even closing your accounts and moving your funds to a new bank may not help you. Recently a large number of banks, including some large local ones, have begun “honoring” debits or checks presented against closed accounts, paying the items despite the fact that the account has been closed and has no funds, and then charging the former account owner with substantial overdraft fees. This occurs even where the debits presented were unauthorized by the former account holder

First, in my experience, a local community bank is more likely to extend lines of credit or commercial loans to small or new businesses. Yes, you will have to provide a personal guaranty, but that is true of all banks. Decisions are more likely to be made by local officers, who know you and the community. Decisions by large national banks are nearly always made by individuals in some regional or national office, with no knowledge of you or the community in which you are operating, based upon artificial, rigid criteria.

Local community banks offer all of the services of large banks, with the additional service of actual “ customer service”; i.e., knowing you, helping you, and making your business grow. It is vital that any business owner inquire into the actual policies of his or her bank, in order to avoid legal liability resulting from a bank’s desire to increase its revenues at the expense of its customers. Financial and tax considerations are not the only issues in choosing a bank; there are legal issues as well!

Second, a local community bank will work with you, not against you. This is where some serious legal issues come in to play. Many large national banks, in order to increase revenues from fees (since the government has clamped down on interest rates and other credit revenue streams), have changed policies in order to “force” accounts into overdraft, honor the items presented anyway, and impose hefty overdraft fees. For example, the bank might first process all debits against an account, before processing deposits, so that those debits are “overdraft” transactions, even though deposits to cover them were to be processed the same day. Or, a bank
