“A VISIT FROM ST. NICHOLAS” AKA “THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS”

• Over the years other terminology has also changed. Phrases and words such as “But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight” has changed to: “But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight.” The original last line was “Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night,” which has changed in more recent editions to “Merry Christmas to all …”

If one attempts to conjure up a list of American Christmas classics, “The Night Before Christmas” has to be near the top of the list. First titled “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” author Clement Clarke Moore wrote it for his son in 1822. A friend had submitted it anonymously to the Troy, New York “Sentinel” in 1823 when it was first published. The poem was not attributed to Moore until an anthology of his work was published in 1844. Legend has it that Moore, a university professor and author of scholarly works, may not have wanted to be associated with children’s literature.

• Three of the original four handwritten poems are located in museums. The fourth is said to have surfaced in 2006 in Dallas when it was sold by a private collector through Heritage Auction Galleries for $280,000 to a New York media CEO. This copy is said to be signed by Clement Clarke Moore and was given to a friend in 1860.

Once published in the “Sentinel,” the rest was history. It is surmised that Moore’s story about Santa Claus shaped the American view of Christmas and associated Santa with the holiday, giving the emphasis to children rather than religion.

OH THE MEAN ONE, MR. GRINCH If “The Night Before Christmas” launched the commercialization of the holiday, then “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” was a serious attempt at reversing that trend. Written in 1957 by Dr. Seuss, the story is about a cranky green creature (Grinch) who lives in a cave in the very steep Mount Crumpit that rises above Whoville where the happy Whos live and breathe the Christmas Spirit. The Grinch is lonely and envious of the Whos. He hatches a plan to steal their Christmas – everything from

WHO IS REALLY THE AUTHOR? There is a small amount of controversy surrounding the true author of “A Visit From St. Nicholas.” A few have proposed that Harry Livingston Jr. is the author. Arguments include the writing style and theme was consistent with Livingston’s prose; his mother was Dutch, which would account for the original Dutch spelling of reindeer Dunder and Blixem; Clement Clarke Moore had not take credit for the writing early on; and Moore had allegedly lied about translating a book at one time, although this has been explained as a miscommunication regarding a dedication in a book.

Boris Karloff starred as the Grinch in the first television production in 1966. Jim Carrey played the part successfully in the 2000 version directed by Ron Howard. In 1975, Zero Mostel narrated an audio recording of the story.

GREEN AND OTHER GRINCHY TRIVIA • The original Grinch was not green, but black and white with some red and pink splotches of color. • The 2000 movie cost $115 million to make. Part of that cost was to pay for 2,000 candy canes, 52,000 Christmas lights and about 8,200 ornaments. Oh, and there was that yak hair dyed green and sewn onto a suit made of spandex, one at a time. • The TV version featured June Foray as the voice of Cindy Lou Who. She was the voice of Rocky the flying squirrel and Natasha Fatale in the famous “Rocky and Bullwinkle” cartoon series.

Controversy aside, this is the first piece of literature that told the story of Santa, what he looks like and how he operates: arriving on Christmas Eve, stuffing the stockings, the reindeer and their names, the use of the chimney and how Santa looks. DICKENS’ CHRISTMAS CAROL English novelist Charles Dickens is synonymous with Christmas literature, “A Christmas Carol” being one of the most well known and popular, particularly for movie and stage performances. Lest the Grinch think he has cornered the market on the holiday grumpies, there’s Ebenezer Scrooge. “A Christmas Carol” was written during the Victorian era in Britain, a time when Christmas may have gone by the wayside and replaced with a more somber atmosphere. Dickens’ story brought back the “merry” to Merry Christmas. We all know the story: Ebenezer Scrooge, cruel and heartless businessman is visited by the spirit of his dead business partner who warns him of what is to happen if he doesn’t change his Grinch-like ways. Scrooge then receives visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, all giving him a glimpse into his life and the affects he has had on others. After he views life through the eyes of others, he experiences a revelation and changes into a kind and compassionate man who loves Christmas and what it stands for. He suddenly finds empathy and compassion for his employee, Bob Cratchit and his ill son, Tiny Tim. Dickens felt strongly about the plight of poor families and their children during the early 19th century and had planned to write a scathing discourse about the same. Instead, he chose to write “A Christmas Carol” in an effort to raise awareness about

ost people can identify with fear of failure. An adolescent may fear failing at sports, critical classes, gaining acceptance into college, and gaining acceptance in social situations/circles. As an adult, one may fear failing in college, lack of abundance, lack of or losing a relationship, or failing at a career or in creating a business. But, many do not identify with fear of success, because that is seen as less common. Fearing success is quite common. Fear of success is more common than fear of failure, however, we as a society are taught to recognize fear of failure. From an early age, many people are taught to grow up, perform well in school, follow the rules, earn a college degree (for some), find a lucrative and/or respectable career, earn an income, pay taxes, and take care of family members along the way. Many people are programmed to believe that if they do not accomplish these tasks or the tasks that were expected within the family unit, at some point, they have failed. Fear of failure is simple for the conscious mind to understand. So, look beyond the conscious mind. Look at what the subconscious states because the statements that the subconscious makes is what drives behaviors and choice selections in life. Take the example of a child who is raised in a family that is very con-

cerned about ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. The family is very black and white in terms of what is good behavior and what is bad behavior. There can also be much control over what and whom the child is allowed to like. This creates restriction within the child, because the child may have thoughts/desires/dreams that do not match the family’s set of rules. He or she may have dreams of accomplishing something extraordinary, but suppressed it out of wanting to be conditionally accepted within the family. This can create a fear of success. Later, after the child grows up, the subconscious can state that if that person is truly his or her authentic self, is self-empowered, and is truly independent and joyful, then he or she will not be accepted. So that person continues to suppress the authentic self out of ‘needing’ approval. The conscious mind turns it into fear of failure because that makes more sense. The fear in the subconscious states that if he or she really looks at the core issue, then it will need to be dealt with, therefore look at a false issue and then the real issue remains intact. The fear states that it is too risky to look at the real issue, for if the person does, he or she may lose that conditional acceptance.

When choosing a hanging drop box, pick a box that mirrors your home's trimmings. Dress up posted boxes by staining or painting the wooden post to match the house's trim and woodwork. Create structures for your box from materials found throughout the hardscaping. Warning: Consult a professional when designing and building structures. Install window boxes Window boxes offer a fast, easy way to bring color and charm to your home exterior. Choose boxes made from copper or iron for a traditional look, or painted wood for a cottage feel. Mix and match flowers and plants to suit your lighting conditions and color scheme.

Add shutters or accent trim Shutters and trim add a welcoming layer of beauty to your home's exterior. Shutters also control light and ventilation, and provide additional security. • On Dec. 26, 1606, William Shakespeare’s play “King Lear” is performed at the court of King James I of England. Shakespeare’s plays were not published during his lifetime. After his death, two members of his troupe collected copies of his plays and printed what is now called the First Folio (1623). • On Dec. 24, 1809, Christopher Houston “Kit” Carson, celebrated hero of the American West, is born in Richmond, Ky. s we started with the Legend of the Poinsettia, lets end with the Christmas Rose. This is one of my favorites, Christmas Rose as the name suggests is deeply associated with the faith, love and devotion to Christ, our Savior. This flower is English in its origin and is believed to bloom in the snow-covered

mountains of Central Europe at the time, when the winter is at its prime, often during the Christmas season and thus, deserves to be known as the true Christmas blossom. People also call this white colored flower with pink tipped petals by the name of Snow Rose or Winter Rose as it blooms during the Winter season at the time when all the other greenery bows down under a thick layer of snow. Here we are going to narrate

an interesting folklore, which advocates the appropriateness of its name as the Christmas Rose, with full conviction. It is said that at the time, the little baby Jesus took birth and the wise men and shepherds were going to greet the Christ child laden with all kinds of presents, a little poor shepherdess named Madelon saw them on their way. when she saw the caravan of richly dressed Three Wise Men with their expensive gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense hurrying across their way to baby Christ and followed by the shepherds who were informed by the angel of the coming of their Savior who were carrying gifts such as fruits, honey and dove that were not so rich but spoke volumes of their love. Moved by the sight, she asked them where they were going and wanted to greet the baby too but to her utter dismay, she had nothing to offer the Lord of the Lords and the King of the Kings! Despite her efforts, she couldn’t find even a single bloom in the snow-covered fields and felt so helpless that she burst into crying. An angel saw her and was kind enough to translate her love for the Newborn King into a Christmas Rose for her, which she found to

her gladness, buried deep in the snow, right in front of her and she carried it to the Christ child. Since then, Christmas Rose is remembered as symbolic of deep Christian faith and devotion. Christmas flowers are symbolic of gaiety, love, beauty and hope, and all the most tender emotions in the human heart such as sharing, happiness, joy, kindness and virtues that make Christmas more special than any other Holiday. Often used to decorate homes during holiday season as wreaths and Christmas centerpieces, people also exchange them as Christmas gifts in the form of bouquets and floral baskets. y husband and I just went Christmas tree shopping. Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United States since about 1850. We always enjoy inviting family and friends over to help us decorate the tree, drink mugs of coffee and hot cocoa, and eat cookies. This old-fashioned family celebration is one of the highlights of our holiday season. This delicious recipe for Decorated Tree Cookies is fun to make. You bake the cookies ahead of time and decorate them with your family and friends during the tree-trimming party. Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

DECORATED TREE COOKIES This rolled cookie dough recipe can be doubled, and it can be refrigerated for up to three days. To freeze, wrap in plastic wrap and place in a zip-closure freezer bag. Defrost in the refrigerator 24 hours. Be creative and use several of the decorating ideas below. 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1. In a large bowl, beat powdered sugar and margarine with an electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with a spoon, until smooth. 2. Break egg into a small bowl and beat slightly with a fork. Add egg to sugar mixture and stir in vanilla extract. 3. Stir in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. 4. For best results, cover dough and refrigerate for about two hours. 5. Preheat oven to 375 F. 6. Lightly flour counter or use a dough board. Place half of dough on surface and form a ball. Rub some flour on the rolling pin and roll dough to about 1/8 inch thickness. 7. Using a Christmas tree, star or bell-shaped cookie cutter, cut out several cookies. Place about 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. 8. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool completely before using frosting or glaze to decorate or it will melt.

1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Make sure cookies are completely cool then coat each cookie with the white glaze. 2. To make colors, remove one tablespoon glaze to several small cups. Add 1 or 2 drops of food coloring to each. Make some tints and some darker colors for creative decorating. Use a small brush or toothpick to swirl colors into desired patterns on cookies. 3. To use the same recipe as frosting, simply add a little more powdered sugar to thicken. TIP: Food coloring comes in two forms: paste or liquid. The paste makes the most vivid and varied colors, but liquid also can work well. Start with a tiny amount of food coloring and add more until desired color is reached.

TINTED COCONUT Place one can flaked or shredded coconut in a zip-closure bag or jar with lid. Make sure you leave 3 inches of space in the top of the container for shaking. Add 2 to 3 drops food color. Zip the bag or seal the jar and shake the container. Add more food color for darker colors.

COLORED SUGAR Measure 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Place sugar in a jar with tight fitting lid. Add a few drops liquid food coloring and shake jar. Add more food coloring to get desired color for sugar. Sprinkle sugar on warm cookies or glaze, then sprinkle with colored sugar.

DECORATING TIP: Use a mufﬁn tin to assemble all the decorations: tinted coconut, colored sugar, sprinkles and candy balls.

New DVD Releases for Week of December 20, 2010 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Salt” (Unrated Edition) -- Angelina Jolie stars as Evelyn Salt, a spy on the run (a la the Bourne ﬁlms) in this high-octane, action-fueled thriller. Salt is a CIA agent married to a German national who visits Korea very often. On the eve of her anniversary, a Russian defector dying of cancer reveals that Salt is a sleeper agent, trained since she was a child, whose mission, when “activated,” is to assassinate the Russian president.

Fearing for her husband’s safety, she begins her search for him, while at the same time eluding her fellow agents who are hellbent on killing her. The action scenes are seemingly non-stop, and the plot twists keep you guessing whether Salt is or isn’t a Manchurian Candidate. Add to the mix the electric performance of Angelina Jolie, and you’ve got a recipe for a delicious afternoon’s diversion. “Family Guy: It’s a Trap!” (Unrated) -- The third installment of “The Family Guy” specials spooﬁng the original “Star Wars” trilogy this time takes its bad-taste aim at “Return of the Jedi.” The DVD release also includes deleted scenes, a Trivial Pursuit game, the panel discussion from Comic-con 2010 and much more. Also, if you don’t already own the previous two episodes, the entire trilogy can be had in the boxed set: “Laugh It Up Fuzzball: The

Family Guy Trilogy.” DOG OF THE WEEK “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” (PG13) -- In the 1990s, if you wanted a telltale sign that a movie was gonna suck, all you had to do is see if Freddy Prinz Jr. was in it. Today, if you want a guarantee that a movie is gonna blow chunks, look for Shia LeBeouf in the cast list. Whether he’s dragging down the plot as Indiana Jones’ son, or in the case of this “Wall Street” sequel as Gordon Gecko’s protege, Jake Moore, that boy can take a mediocre movie and turn it into something that smells like it came straight from a corpse. Granted, “Money Never Sleeps” wouldn’t be a very good ﬁlm even without LeBeouf. Michael Douglas looks like he’s just phoning it in, and the movie fails to capture the same energy as the original.

Of course, estate planning can seem like a daunting task. But youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find it easier to handle if you break it down into three key areas: distributing your assets, protecting your family and reducing estate taxes. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s look at these topics: Distributing your assets â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Obviously, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s essential that you let your family know just how youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to see your assets distributed, and to whom. At the very least, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to draw up a will. If you were to die without one, the state could end up distributing your resources, and it might do so in a way you wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have wanted. But even a will may not be sufficient. Many people design a living trust, which provides them with more flexibility in distributing assets â&#x20AC;&#x201D; for example, you could direct your living trust to disperse assets to children or grandchildren at specific ages â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and allows assets to be distributed without going through the time-consuming, and public, probate process. Protecting your family â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Estate planning isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just about dollars and cents â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it also involves taking the necessary steps to preserve the welfare of your family if you are not around or become incapacitated. Consequently, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to name a guardian for your minor children â&#x20AC;&#x201D; someone who can step in and raise them should anything happen to you

and your spouse. And when your children are adults, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to help them with decisions that could prove agonizing. For example, by creating a living will, you can state whether you want your life prolonged if you ever face a terminal illness or catastrophic brain injury and are no longer able to make decisions for yourself. And by drawing up a health care power of attorney, you can name someone to make health care choices for you if you are unable to do so. Reducing estate taxes â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Depending on the size of your estate, your heirs may never have to worry about estate taxes. But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to predict, especially given the fact that federal estate laws have gone through several changes in recent years, and may do so again. Your best bet is to stay informed about the exemption level â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the amount you can pass on to your heirs, free of estate taxes â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and look for ways to reduce the size of your taxable estate. You could, for instance, make charitable gifts, thus moving these assets from your estate. You may also want to consider arrangements such as an irrevocable life insurance trust â&#x20AC;&#x201D; under which you can transfer a life insurance policy out of your estate and have the trust distribute the proceeds to the beneficiaries youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve chosen â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or a credit shelter trust, which allows both you and your spouse to take full advantage of both your estate tax exemptions. A trust can be a complex instrument, so before establishing one, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to consult with your tax and legal advisors. In fact, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to consult with them on all aspects of estate planning. It will take time and effort, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth it to leave the type of legacy you desire. hould you hire a lawyer for your divorce? Many people don’t use lawyers for their divorce. You may not be able to afford a lawyer. If you have only been married for a few years, and you have no children, and you have little in the way of assets and liabilities, you may decide you can do it yourself. If you have been married for more than a few years, and you have significant assets and liabilities, and if children are involved, the more likely it is that you may need a lawyer. A simple analogy may be helpful in making this decision. Let’s assume you have been in a business partnership with another person for 10 years. Your partner has become dissatisfied with your performance in the business. Your partner decides to get rid of you and carry on the business without you. Business has been fairly good during the partnership and the business has accumulated significant assets as well as some liabilities. When you entered into the partnership there was no agreement about what would happen when the partnership ended. Do you think it makes good business sense to talk to a lawyer about ending the partnership? Are you confident that your partner will treat you with absolute fairness and provide you with all the information you need to make the best possible decisions? Do you accept your partner’s first offer to buy you out of the business? Can you get your fair share of the business and eliminate any unnecessary liabilities without a lawyer’s help? This makes it very difficult to be objective and to accurately analyze your options. If you have been married for a significant length of time, your divorce will be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, business transactions that you will ever be involved in. Do you understand the business of getting a divorce? Do you understand divorce laws regarding the division of assets and liabilities, including complex assets such as pensions and retirement accounts? If not, you may shortchange yourself. However, not all gift cards are alike. While the industry used to be guilty of abuse with gift-card expiration dates and fees, new rules this year force merchants to keep the cards (and the balance) active for five years. If there are per-purchase fees, they must be written on the package. Balance carry-over fees can’t be assessed until the card has been used at least once. After that, however, fees can be assessed once a month, and there’s nothing to limit the amount of fees that can be charged for that.

For the Internet-savvy recipient, consider an e-gift card, also known as a virtual gift card. You e-mail a special code to the recipient, who prints it out and takes it to the store. It spends just like a plastic gift card.

If the card is lost, there’s no guarantee you can get a replacement, even with your receipt. If you can get a replacement, there are sure to be fees. Do your homework and be sure what you’re getting. There are new warnings out this year about preloaded gift cards you take off the rack: There might not be any money there by the time your recipient uses them. Scammers have figured out how to read the code on a card, call the toll-free number on the back, and then spend that money. Instead of buying

Be careful of the store: If it goes bankrupt, the gift cards you buy might be worthless. Consider giving cash instead. While it’s thought that nearly 30 percent of gift cards go unused every year, nobody loses track of cash.
