On Dec. 15, 1979, a photo journalist for the “Montreal Gazette,” Chris Haney, and a sports journalist for “The Canadian Press,” Scott Abbott, were playing a game of Scrabble when they decided to invent their own game. Two years later, their invention was trademark registered and eventually released as Trivial Pursuit.

THE FIRST COLLEGE BOWL

The first copies of Trivial Pursuit sold at a loss. Manufacturing costs for the copies were $75 each game; retailers sold it for $15. Then, in 1983, Selchow and Righter, a U.S. game manufacturer and distributor, bought the rights to Trivial Pursuit; and, after an all-out public relations campaign, the game became “the biggest phenomenon in game history,” according to Time magazine.

Before universities took on the sponsorship of trivia bowls, American companies like Good Housekeeping magazine and General Electric backed trivia contests for students. Good Housekeeping sponsored a trivia bowl on the radio, referred to as “the varsity sport of the mind,” from 1953 to 1955. In January 1959, the most well-known of all college bowls was launched with GE as its sponsor.

In December 1993, Games Magazine named Trivial Pursuit to the “Games Hall of Fame.”

The GE College Bowl became a hit network television show, originally hosted

by Allen Ludden and later Robert Earle.

It ran about 25 to 40 weeks each year on Saturdays and Sundays for 17 seasons, until June 1970. During its run, the College Bowl won numerous accolades from presidents to Congress to the PTA and received a slew of awards, including an Emmy and the Peabody Award for outstanding achievement in entertainment and education.

As time went on, Trivial Pursuit came out with pop-culture games like the Beatles Trivia Pursuit and Seinfeld Trivia Pursuit. As technology crept in, Trivial Pursuit kept up, with Trivial Pursuit games for computer and video, cell phones, the Wii and the iPod. Have you ever been to a bar and played the video version of Trivial Pursuit while sipping a beer?

In today’s world of college bowls, the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point boasts the world’s largest trivia contest. The contest, which has run for 38 years, is open to anyone and played in April each year. It spans 54 hours throughout a weekend with eight questions every hour. There are 500 teams with one to 50 players, and the top 10 are awarded trophies.

Regardless of the variety, the basics remain the same. In 2008, Parker Brothers released Trivial Pursuit: the Best of Genus. The edition is a collection of “best” questions in all of the categories from the past 25 years, from people and places to sports and leisure to science and nature.

Some of the all-time, best-loved Trivial Pursuit questions can be silly, funny or a bit personal.

T.V. TRIVIA GAMES The popularity of the board game gave birth to trivia-related television shows like “Jeopardy” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” And for the younger set (or adults shot down by Jeopardy), there is “Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?”

The Family Channel’s “Trivial Pursuit� game show aired from 1993 to 1995, with announcers Wink Martindale and Randy West.

Running only one season was Trivial Pursuit: America Plays. The game show premiered in September 2008 but wasn’t renewed, even though it was based on an interactive format, where the public sent in questions with a potential to win money at home.

I

n my line of work, I have heard many people say they lack focus and are not really sure where their lives are going. They also usually say that they do not know their purpose and lack passion. I have found that many people do not even know what passion is. They do not know how to recognize it in order to allow it to be a driving force in life.

Many people lack passion, for different reasons. For some, it is out of continued obligations to others, perceptions of self-worth, anger, and fear are common reasons. If a person consistently meets other people’s obligations while ignoring his or her own wants and needs, it will deplete energy and one needs energy to feed passion and vice versa.

If a person carries a perception of low self-worth, it many times masquerades as something else. Constantly taking care of other people in the sense of running around to meet other people’s wants while neglecting one’s own needs is an example. It can also masquerade as always staying busy and never having time to slow down to enjoy life. Many people have become experts at covering up the real issue. It can be covered up to the point of the person forgetting it was ever there, such as anger and fear. Pretending takes up a lot of energy and one needs energy to feel passion.

When one has an abundance of passion for life, he or she has an abundance of energy. A person who carries much passion is often energetic, perhaps a bit loud, likes trying new things, and is usually driven. That does not mean the person walks around smiling all the time or yelling all the time, it just means the person’s passion is apparent. When one has passion for life, making life choices is easier because that person usually does become caught up in fear of survival (what if it is the ‘wrong’ choice?). he TLCA is featuring two distinct art exhibitions during our January 4 - 29 “Showcase of Astounding Front Range Artists.”

In addition to featuring some dynamite, fun artists in the main gallery, we are hosting a show in the Lucy Owens Gallery that is powerful and provocative. When I assumed the role of Interim Executive Director, I felt that on occasion, we should utilize our facility to focus on relevant social issues.

I am ecstatic that we have landed Nanci Ricks, am amazing photographer, who uses her talents to draw attention to human trafficking and slavery.

Her startling, spirit-grabbing photo documentary, consisting of 18 photographs with explanations, will be installed this Sunday. The article

below shows a photo of Nanci, along with her bio. Nanci has addressed the U.S. Congress on the issue of human trafficking, and she has appeared on national television programs.

anci Ricks will be signing her book, “To Love the Slumdog: My Journey Serving the Untouchables - the Dalit,” on Friday, January 7th, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts in Palmer Lake.

In 2001, Nanci co-founded and directed the Dalit Freedom Network (DFN), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the emancipation of India’s Dalit. She brings you along on her journeys to India through her engaging photographs and descriptive stories. You can see her photographs and read her stories, but most importantly you will be drawn into her heart for the nation of India.

Nanci has passionately communicated about the plight of the Dalits to countless audiences. She has testified before the US Congress as well as presented to large and small Indian and American audiences, interest groups, universities, and churches.

• On Jan. 7, 1927, the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, formerly known as the Savoy Big Five, travels 48 miles west from Chicago to play its first game, in Hinckley, Ill. The Globetrotters won 101 out of 117 games that first season.

• On Jan. 9, 1768, Englishman Philip Astley stages the first modern circus in London. Astley, a former cavalry sergeant major, found that if he galloped in a tight circle, centrifugal force allowed him to perform seemingly impossible feats on a horse’s back. • On Jan. 6, 1838, Samuel Morse’s telegraph system is demonstrated for the first time at the Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown, N.J. The telegraph eventually would revolutionize long-distance communication, reaching the height of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s.

• On Jan. 5, 1933, construction begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers started excavating 3.25 million cubic feet of dirt for the structure’s huge anchorages. The Golden Gate Bridge officially opened on May 27, 1937. At 3,000 feet, it was the longest bridge span in the world at the time.

• On Jan. 4, 1974, President Richard Nixon refuses to hand over tape recordings and documents that had been subpoenaed by the Senate Watergate Committee. Marking the beginning of the end of his presidency, Nixon would resign from office in disgrace eight months later.

• On Jan. 3, 1990, Panama’s General Manuel Antonio Noriega, after holing up for 10 days at the Vatican embassy in Panama City, surrenders to U.S. military troops to face charges of drug trafficking.

STATINS AREN’T ONLY WAY TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My doctor prescribed statin drugs to control my LDL cholesterol. First I took lovastatin (Mevacor) and then simvastatin (Zocor), but I had muscle pain and weakness with them.

I am reluctant to start the pravastatin (Pravachol) that he now has prescribed. Are there alternatives? How about Endur-acin?

CoQ10 has been suggested. -- D.L. ANSWER: Statins are the most potent cholesterol-lowering drugs, including lowering LDL cholesterol -- bad cholesterol, the kind that clings to artery walls. They’ve been around for 20 years, and their safety record has been good. Some people develop muscle pain. Those people can try a different statin. You did. However, you might be reacting a bit too fast in rejecting pravastatin (Pravachol). It is the statin that most infrequently is involved with muscle complaints.

I don’t know any herb on the list of herbs you included (in an edited part of the letter) that compare with medicines for cholesterol control. However, there are things you can do to lower cholesterol, including reducing your saturated fat and cholesterol intake. Saturated fats are the fats found in many meats, whole-fat dairy products and many other commercially prepared foods.

You have to look on the label. Omega-3 fatty acids lower cholesterol. They’re found in fish. If you cannot stand fish, take the omega-3s in pill form.

Questran, Colestid, Welchol and Zetia are cholesterol-lowering drugs that are unrelated to statins.

Niacin can increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and lower triglycerides, fats that also figure into artery clogging. Endur-

2. In same skillet, add onion, garlic, bell pepper and 1 chopped chili, 1 tablespoon of the cilantro, the chili powder and the cumin. Cook 3 to 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until vegetables are crisp-tender. Stir in the tomatoes and the broth, until well mixed.

3. Return chicken to skillet; spoon sauce over chicken. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 20 to 25 minutes, turning chicken once, until juice of chicken is clear when thickest piece is cut to bone (170 F for breasts; 180 F for thighs and drumsticks).

4. Serve in shallow bowls over rice; sprinkle with remaining cilantro and jalapeno pepper. Serve with lime wedges. Makes 4 servings.

“Machete” (R) -- “Machete” started out as nothing more than a fake trailer in the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino flick “Grindhouse.” But fans of the film clamored for more, and so Rodriguez went ahead and made it into a feature-length “Mexsploitation” opus that will thrill any fan of low-budget ‘70s drive-in cinema.

(Steven Seagal). Machete is hired by a guy to assassinate an anti-immigration senator (played with scene-stealing relish by Robert De Niro). Consider this: The average cost of raising a child to age 17 is now $222,360, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report on how much middle-income, two-parent families spend on their offspring.

And this is the amount you might spend before your son or daughter heads to college. Clearly, you need to start making the financial moves necessary to take your child from diapers to a degree. Here are some suggestions for doing just that: Purchase sufficient life insurance.

When it was just you and your spouse, it was a good idea for you to have life insurance â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but now that you have a child, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an absolute necessity. If you have any doubts about the value of life insurance, just look again at that $222,360 figure above, and then tack on the costs of four years of college. If you or your spouse were to die unexpectedly, would the survivor earn enough to raise and educate your child? In this day and age, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not likely â&#x20AC;&#x201D; so make sure you have adequate life insurance in place.

Prepare a will. Obviously, you hope to enjoy a long life â&#x20AC;&#x201D; one in which you see your child grow to adulthood.

But none of us can predict the future, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s essential that you draw up a will to provide for the care of your child, both financially and physically.

When you create a will, you can name a guardian to step in and take care of your child, if necessary, and you can

make sure your child receives your financial assets. However, many people go beyond writing a will and establish a living trust, which gives them more control over how and when they want their assets distributed. Your legal advisor can help you prepare a will and determine if a living trust is appropriate for your needs.

Maintain adequate cash. To help pay for all those expenses related to child rearing, keep enough cash on hand. By having enough resources available in liquid accounts, you can avoid having to dip into your longterm investments to pay for shortterm needs.

Save early and often for college. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never too soon to start saving for the high costs of higher education. A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged vehicle and may be a great option for your college savings. Contributions to a 529 plan are made with after-tax dollars, and have the opportunity to grow taxfree. Withdrawals used for qualified higher education expenses are also tax free. Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit depending on the plan and state.

Stay balanced. As weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen, it takes a lot of money to raise a child.

But even as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re meeting these expenses, think about your own future, particularly your retirement. Strive to strike a balance between the money you spend on your child and the amount you invest in your 401(k), IRA and other retirement-savings vehicles.

You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t put a price-tag on your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future, but when it comes to taking care of that child, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to know the costs involved â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and be prepared for them.

n a Colorado divorce, marital property will be equitably divided between the spouses.

The spouses’ separate property, if any, will be set aside to each spouse. What is “separate property”?

Separate property is property that was acquired prior to the marriage or property that was acquired during the marriage such as an inheritance and certain other gifts. For example, if you saved money prior to the marriage or a parent left you money in their will during the marriage, such funds are your separate property, assuming that you have not commingled such funds with marital property.

The Court has no power to divide or distribute separate property. However, the Court does not operate in a vacuum and can take separate property into consideration when making financial decisions regarding the division and distribution of marital property and the amount and duration of maintenance (alimony).

ever, any increase, such as appreciation, of your separate property during the marriage is marital property and will be divided by the Court! Folks who have been married for a long time and who have separate property investments are probably going to have a lot of marital property resulting from the increase in the value of their separate property investments during the marriage. For example, the little vacation home in Aspen you purchased thirty years ago before your marriage is going to have a huge marital property component due to the amount it has appreciated during the marriage.

Similarly, if you are fortunate enough to be the beneficiary (remainderman) of a trust that is no longer revocable (for example, the person who created the trust has died), you may discover that your separate property interest in the trust may have a significant component of marital property even though you have never received a dime from the trust! The analysis of property interests in trusts is too complicated for an article like this and may require the services of an expert accountant to figure out.

Now a new industry has sprung up, devising new ways to separate us from our dollars: the prepaid card, also called the “reloadable” card.

PREPAID CARDS: LOAD AT YOUR OWN RISK

Consumers are invited to use the prepaid cards as they would a bank: deposit a paycheck, have bills automatically paid out of the balance, buy groceries. The cards can be purchased and reloaded nearly anywhere, including convenience stores and big-box stores.

Prepaid cards are becoming big business as more and more people opt out of having regular checking and savings accounts. Some lack good credit; many don’t want to incur credit-card interest; while others simply want the convenience of not carrying cash.

The prepaid cards, however, don’t come with the same protections as credit cards: Those CARD Act laws don’t cover prepaid cards, especially when it comes to fees. If you put, say, $100 on a prepaid card, you’d think you’d have that whole $100 of your own money to spend.

Not so.

Prepaid cards can come with: purchase fees, activation fees, minimum deposit fees, card-replacement fees, withdrawal fees, ATM inquiry fees, cancellation fees, monthly fees, reload fees, annual fees, PIN fees and even fees to talk to customer service.

Prepaid cards generally put a temporary lock on your funds when used at a gas station or for hotels, denying you access to your own money.

Some of the prepaid cards even include a line of credit or overdraft protection. If you don’t keep careful track of the associated fees, you can spend more than you expect and incur debt. There’s also no credit reporting with prepaid cards, which means they can’t be used to build up a credit history.

Instead of paying fees to use your own money, open a bank account and use the debit card that comes with it.
