any high-ranking officials and leaders worldwide sought guidance from their personal astrologers before they would make any decisions on a variety of matters. Former First Lady Nancy Reagan made a splash in history when she consulted an astrologist after the assassination attempt on her husband and then president, Ronald Reagan, who also turned to the galaxy for guidance. Millions of Americans read their horoscope on a daily basis – some read for fun; others are serious. One Harris poll showed that at least 31 percent of Americans believe in astrology to some degree. Almost half of the believers were in the 25 to 29 age group, as Does the Zodiac Tell All?... Continued on Page 2

The same sort of “scare” happened in 1524 as well, when astrologers announced the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, and a conjunction of all the ancient planets under the sign of Pisces. Because the conjunction was supposed to happen under a water sign (Pisces), predictions about flooding and an overabundance of rain and snow were widespread. But controversy over using the Conjunction of 1524 as a prognosticator of weather brought on numerous treatises decrying its reliability.

opposed to 14 percent of those 65 years plus.

MORE THAN THE DAILY HOROSCOPE The “art” or “science” or “black magic” (as some believe) of astrology dates way back to 1645 BC in the days of Babylon. In the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, constellations were recognized and named, soon after 3000 B.C.

Modern astrological software has now revealed that the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn took place Jan. 30, 1524, before all seven planets were together in Pisces. On Feb. 13 the same year, Mercury entered Pisces, which brought all of the traditional planets together under Pisces, except for the Moon in Gemini. On Feb. 20, Venus entered Aries with the Moon in Sagittarius. Clear as mud?

Based on a mixed bag of mathematical systems, astrology is the study of the interactions among the stars and the planets and how those relationships affect human existence. It’s not to be confused with astronomy, which is the study of the sun, moon and stars – without the human factor. Advances in astrology have been credited to the Greeks. When they linked the planets and constellations to Greek gods, the Greeks gave new meaning to the science of astrology. The Greek astronomer and mathematician, Ptolemy, became a legendary guru of astrology after he wrote books on the subject. His writings eventually became the fodder for modern-day astrology.

To celebrate the birth of the princess, the “London Sunday Express” ran an astrological profile of her; thus, the beginning of the modern newspaper horoscope.

THE SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC The Greeks believed the constellations could determine the strengths of a person at the time of birth; they also believed that a person’s life was preordained and all major events could be predicted through knowledge of the Zodiac system. Astrologers (some were called soothsayers) used zodiac animal and human signs, such as the goat, the crab and the archer, to predict the destinies of the wealthy and the aristocrats. The zodiac signs were divided into four main groups in correlation to the elements of Earth.

In other words, the Conjunction of 1524 was a non-event. When the astrologically based predictions never came to fruition, the science of the constellations in relation to humans declined in popularity.

The signs of FIRE are attributed to the sun: Aires, Leo and Sagittarius. AIR signs are connected with the power of wind: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. The rainy season or WATER signs include Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. EARTH signs are Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo.

Although many continued to practice astrology, it wasn’t until 1930 when Princess Margaret was born that astrology was once again embraced en masse.

Does the Zodiac Tell All?... Continued on Page 3

Others like Galileo and Copernicus also were recognized as the “fathers” of the modern movement of astrology. The popularity of astrology soared during the Renaissance Period, as almanacs began publishing astrological information for the public to utilize.

CHINESE HOROSCOPE LEGENDS Many Americans have adopted the Chinese zodiac signs as a forecast for the future as well. Chinese astrology is about the position of the major planets when a person is born. The Chinese built a system around a 12-year cycle of animal signs by observing the orbit of Jupiter. Following Jupiter’s orbit around the sun, the Chinese divided the “celestial circle into 12 sections. There are many myths and legends about the roots of the Chinese zodiac signs. The 12 animals that make up the signs, which appear on the Chinese zodiac calendar, are an odd conglomeration: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, monkey, pig, horse, sheep, rooster and dog. The most famous legend regarding the Chinese zodiac signs begins with Buddha inviting all animals to participate in a race. The prize was a “coveted position on the Chinese zodiac calendar. The first 12 animals to cross the river would appear on the calendar in the order they finished. The rat came in first, achieving his place by using his brain. The rat hitched a ride on the best swimmer (the buffalo) and jumped off the buffalo’s back just before reaching the finish line. The

The tiger crossed in third place, followed by the rabbit that jumped his way across the river, with the dragon helping the rabbit on the final stretch. The snake hid in the hoof of the horse and jumped out at the last minute, scaring the horse and getting the No. 6 spot. The sheep, monkey and rooster all helped each other cross the river, earning three of the 12 spots. The dog and pig were the next ones in despite the fact that both had stopped halfway between. The dog stopped to take a bath and the pig, which had feasted prior to the race, stopped to rest – they were the last to achieve a position on the calendar.

REALITY OR VOODOO? For as many believers in astrology, there are the naysayers. From Christians to atheists, plenty of people think astrology is hogwash. Many believe that astrology is a superstition – a pseudoscience, and that psychology explains the belief in astrology as cognitively based. But some renowned figures in the U.S. believe astrology is a worthy prophet. Inventors, scientists, authors and doctors have believed that astrology is as plausible as any other science.

Here’s what some of our past prominent citizens had to say on the subject: • Benjamin Franklin wrote about astrology in Poor Richard’s Almanac: “Oh the wonderful knowledge to be found in the stars. Even the smallest things are written there ... if you had but skill to read.â€?

• “Astrology is astronomy brought down to earth and applied toward the affairs of man.â€? Hippocrates • “The controls of life are structured as forms and nuclear arrangements, in relation with the motions of the universe.â€? Louis Pasteur • “I was born with Halley’s Comet and I expect to die upon its return.â€? (And he did) Mark Twain

• “Heaven sends down its good and evil symbols and wise men act accordingly.â€? Confucius

• According to a 2010 study conducted in the Netherlands, symptoms of asthma can be successfully treated by riding a roller coaster. • Singles, take note: The dating website Match.com recently conducted a survey of its members regarding their opinions on kissing, and the top turnoff (perhaps unsurprisingly) was bad breath.

• As in America, at Russian wedding receptions it’s traditional for a close friend or relative to toast the new couple. TAI YIRE-CREATING MISSED OPPORTUNITIES Part 1 of 2

H

ave you ever looked at your life and wondered what would have happened had you taken “that” pathway/opportunity, or married “that” person-or waited all together? Many times, we make choices that we may think are the most beneficial choices at the time, but then see that a particular choice was made out of fear or denial. When one makes a choice out of fear and/or denial, it will create a negative outcome. That outcome may be immediate or it may not arrive for weeks, months, or years. Many people marry for fear of not finding a spouse later in life or may marry for family acceptance. In this situation, if the person or couple do not change the reason why they married (change the original intent), the outcome can be emotional separation, distance, and fighting. In another situation, if a person sees that his or her only choice is to take a particular job or career pathway (for economic reasons) or attend a particular college, then the outcome may be dissatisfaction of the job, career, or education. It may lead to dissatisfaction with the people involved as well. The issue is that the choice was made from fear and/or denial. In this scenario, the person may make the choice out of denial of self in regards to an ability to earn an income doing some-

thing that he or she loves doing. This is quite common. Many people play the safe card and do the safe job while denying their desire to do something different, ‘because it may not work economically’. These are called missed opportunities. When ones focus on fear and denial, they miss the real opportunity that could have led to the economic support that would have allowed them to do what they really wanted to do. Perhaps they missed the opportunity to see what was available or missed the opportunity to meet someone who had and could share the answer. In the first example, perhaps the person missed the opportunity to meet a different person that would have created a harmonious relationship.

READY FOR A NEW LOOK?

It is to not regret missed opportunities, but to re-create them. In the first situation, it can be to create a different intent to change the dynamic of the relationship or make a different choice all together, depending on the situation. In the second example, it can learn how to attract or re-create a missed opportunity in order to take that opportunity and create a different life, a different reality.

RECENTLY SNIPPETZ ASKED COFFEE ON THE GO...

HOW’S IT GOING? Here’s what they said: “We’ve made some changes and some improvements just in the few months that we have been open. We invested in a new espresso machine that makes, what we feel are, the best lattes in town. With our roaster, we have developed the Mountain Blend, our darker roast and the Heavenly Blend, a lighter roast, for people who want a good cup of coffee without the tangy undertones,” said Morgan Brown co-owner and cofounder of Coffee on the Go… “Everything is going according to plan, says Marlene, Morgan’s sister and partner. “We developed our own blend and label, so that we can sell whole bean or ground coffee along with our brewed coffee and espresso based drinks. We have also added Apple Cider, that is 100% natural, no artificial color, flavor or preservatives.” It has been important to the owners, since opening, to be able to offer quality, wholesome and

PALMER DIVIDE

consistent drinks for the whole family. Even with the learning curve that all new businesses go through when first opening. The changes have only made them better than ever.

Plumbing, Heating and Electrical

With winter in full swing, they have developed new flavors including, sugar free Butterscotch and Macadamia Nut. Also, they have added Marlene’s raisin spice muffins that are a hit. So next time you are wondering how its going over there at 250 Hwy 105 in Monument– stop on by and receive a dollar off of your latte or cappuccino just for asking, “How’s it going?”

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Jan. 13, 1128, Pope Honorius II grants a papal sanction to the military order known as the Knights Templar, declaring it to be an army of God. The Knights Templar mission was to protect Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land during the Crusades, the series of military expeditions aimed at defeating Muslims in Palestine. • On Jan. 11, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt designates the mighty Grand Canyon a national monument. Congress increased the protection of the canyon in 1932 by making it a national park, ensuring that private development would never despoil the Grand Canyon. • On Jan. 12, 1926, the two-man comedy series “Sam ‘n’ Henry” debuts on Chicago’s WGN radio station. Two years later, after changing its name to “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” the show became one of the most popular radio programs in American history. • On Jan. 16, 1938, “King of Swing” jazz great Benny Goodman brings his revolu-

tionary music to Carnegie Hall for the first time. The concert sold out weeks in advance, with the best seats fetching $2.75. All recordings of the show were presumed lost until Goodman’s sister-in-law came across a set of acetates in 1950. • On Jan. 14, 1943, Franklin Roosevelt becomes the first president to travel on official business by airplane. Crossing the Atlantic by air, Roosevelt flew in a Boeing 314 Flying Boat dubbed the Dixie Clipper to a World War II strategy meeting with Winston Churchill at Casablanca in North Africa. • On Jan. 10, 1967, President Lyndon Johnson, in his annual State of the Union message to Congress, asks for enactment of a 6 percent surcharge on personal and corporate income taxes to help support the Vietnam War for two years, or “for as long as the unusual expenditures associated with our efforts continue.” • On Jan. 15, 1972, “American Pie,” Don McLean’s epic poem in musical form that has long been etched in the American popular consciousness, hits No. 1 on the Billboard charts. When asked to explain what exactly he was trying to say with some of his more ambiguous lyrics, McLean has generally declined. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

love it when encouragement to exercise is backed up by scientific evidence. It’s especially helpful in the middle of winter to have new reasons to get out and be active.

BUILDING MUSCLE

A problem that many of us experience as we age is a loss of muscle and bone density. How to get it back becomes a big question: Loss of muscle can lead to imbalance, which can lead to falls, which can shatter fragile bones. A recent study of rats reveals just how it is that endurance exercises can help bring back the muscle mass. The key phrase is “satellite cells, and that’s where the research was centered. Reduced numbers of “satellite cells can cause a decline

I suspect that in huExercise not only increased the mans, walking, swimming or riding number of satellite cells, but im- a bike at moderate speed will serve proved the ratio of lean versus fat the same purpose. The key word is endurance. in muscles. The muscle the researchers chose to study closely was the Gastrocnemius, or the calf muscles that run from the back of the knee to the ankle. That makes sense: It’s used in so many types of exercise and can easily be measured. They also focused on endurance exercises, as opposed to resistance (weightlifting) exercises. Let me provide some general treatments that help most of these causes. You must stop clearing your throat. Sucking on throat lozenges or frequently sipping from a cup of hot tea with some honey in it will clear mucus from your throat and stop the irritation that throat-clearing causes.

THE TRICKLE DOWN OF POSTNASAL DRIP DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have the worst case of postnasal drip, and it’s driving me crazy. I have a never-ending “ahem, ahem, ahem throat-clearing. Phlegm is constantly in the back of my throat. Sometimes I clear my throat a thousand times a day. Two-thirds of my garbage is used tissues. What can be done? -- J.B. ANSWER: I apologize for condensing your letter. I got the idea, and I believe readers will too. Three or four conditions account for most postnasal dripping. One is allergies. You’ve seen an allergist, and the only allergic reaction you demonstrated was to dust mites. Can you leave your home for a week or so -- visit a relative? If dust mites are the cause, your symptoms should subside in a new environment. Vasomotor rhinitis is second on the list of drip causes. It’s a more-or-less permanent dilation of blood vessels in the nose, and those dilated vessels leak fluid. Throat-clearing is part of the picture. Sinusitis is another important cause. An infected sinus pours out thick mucus that drips into the back of the throat. Chronic sinusitis is best left to the treatment of an ear, nose and throat doctor. Nasal polyps provoke mucus production and dripping. An ENT doctor is equipped to deal with them, should they be found. Medicines -- beta blockers, Catapres for high blood pressure, aspirin and NSAIDs -- are examples of drugs that cause the nose to leak fluid down into the throat.

Flush your nose with a saltwater solution three times a day, one of those times being right before bedtime. You make the solution by adding one teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of baking soda to a quart of boiled water. Add the ingredients when the water is still hot. When the water cools, lean over a sink and flush each nostril gently with a bulb syringe, obtainable in drugstores. Cortisone nasal sprays -- Nasarel or Rhinocort Aqua -- soothe the nasal lining and reduce mucus production. If you still are afflicted after all this, do see an ear, nose and throat doctor. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What ramifications might happen when people share drinks, table food and ice-cream cones with their dogs? They resume eating, drinking or licking the food after their pets have “sampled it. How healthy is this? -- B.A. ANSWER: I wouldn’t think of eating food after a family member had sampled

it with his or her tongue, teeth or mouth. The thought grosses me out. Every person has a slightly different bacterial population in his mouth, and we cope well only with our own bacteria. A dog’s mouth, in spite of claims to the contrary, is not cleaner than the mouth of a human. Dog bites often become infected due to the germs in their mouths. People eating food after a dog has sam-

pled it are asking for trouble. ***

• Avocado -- The monounsaturated fats and potassium in avocados help lower blood pressure. Avocados have more potassium than bananas. Monounsaturated fat also helps keep receptors in the brain sensitive to mood-boosting serotonin. • Basil -- A great source of folate, which helps repair cell damage caused by stress.

STRESS-BUSTING STUFFED BELL PEPPERS

TASTY TREATMENTS FOR STRESS

W

hether you’re dealing with everyday life, holiday pressures or unusual circumstances that have you feeling overwhelmed, the foods you eat can help to elevate stress. I’ve created a delicious recipe for Stress-Busting Stuffed Bell Peppers containing the following ingredients that will keep you calm in times of stress: • Red, orange and yellow bell peppers -- contain vitamins A and C and folate, which help give you more energy and repair cell damage caused by stress. Under prolonged periods of stress, the body gets depleted of vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that fights the free radicals that get released when you’re stressed. • Turkey -- contains L-tryptophan, an amino acid that triggers the release of serotonin, a feel-good, musclerelaxing brain chemical. L-Tryptophan has a calming effect. Turkey also contains tyrosine, an amino acid that helps your brain produce the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. Activating those chemicals helps your brain work faster and be more effective at handling complex mental problems. • Spinach -- Dark green vegetables are powerhouses of vitamins that help replenish our bodies in times of stress. Many dark green vegetables also contain potassium, which is good for our nerves and can calm them. • Quinoa -- These grain-like seeds are rich in protein and vitamin B. Vitamin B has a calming effect on the body and helps relieve feelings of stress and anxiety and enhance your mood.

8 red, yellow or orange bell peppers, or a mixture of all (about 4 pounds) 2 tablespoon canola or olive oil, divided 1 medium-sized yellow onion, chopped 4 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin 16 ounces fresh Italian turkey sausage, removed from casing, or lean ground turkey* 1 (16 ounce) jar chunky salsa, mild or hot 2 cups fresh baby spinach, rinsed and chopped, or 1 (10-ounce) package chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed to remove moisture 1 cup cooked quinoa 1 cup cooked brown rice 1 cup low-fat Cheddar cheese 2 large avocados, peeled and pit removed, sliced 1/2 cup low-fat Greek yogurt 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil leaves 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Cut peppers in half lengthwise, slicing from the stem to the bottoms, leaving the stems intact. Remove the white pithy ribs near stem and down length of inside. Remove ribs and seeds and discard. Place peppers in a shallow 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Drizzle peppers with 1 tablespoon of oil. Cover dish with foil; bake peppers 15 to 20 minutes, until they start to soften. 2. Meanwhile, heat remaining 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic, salt, black pepper, chili powder and cumin; cook until vegetables are softened, about 3 minutes. Add the sausage to skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a slotted spoon or potato masher, until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Add salsa and spinach, and cook, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and stir in cooked quinoa and brown rice. 3. Carefully fill pepper halves with turkey mixture. Cover dish with foil, and bake until the filling is hot and peppers are tender, 20 to 25 minutes. Remove

• Brown Rice -- A healthy carbohydrate that boosts serotonin levels, which has a calming, soothing effect. All whole grains contain B vitamins and fiber, and also supply serotonin-producing carbohydrates that do not spike blood-sugar levels. When you eat a carbohydrate, your body sends an amino acid called tryptophan into the brain to trigger the manufacture of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that makes you feel tranquil and better able to cope. • Low-Fat Cheese, Greek Yogurt -- The whey and protein in milk products like cheese and yogurt help your nerves stay healthy, stabilize your blood sugar, stop you from feeling those extreme highs and lows when you eat sugar, and have been shown to decrease anxiety and frustration. When consumed over a period of time, the calcium in dairy also has been shown to calm muscles and help keep blood pressure in check.

New DVD Releases for Week of January 10, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“The Social Network” (PG-13) -- Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing”) and David Fincher (“Fight Club”) have created an unexpected hit with their dramedy about the creation of the social-networking site Facebook. The delicious irony of the film is that its subject was itself an unexpected hit. No one believed that the brainchild of Harvard nerd Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) would ever take off, let alone become an

Internet behemoth with more than a halfbillion users and worth billions of dollars. The film centers around two court cases: one involving Zuckerberg’s former business partner (Andrew Garfield) and the other by three students who claimed Zuckerberg stole the idea from them. The cases are intercut, with flashbacks to embellish the testimony, giving us a thrilling insight into the bizarre way the website (which began as a dating site for Harvard students) evolved into the massive Internet presence it is today. “Raging Bull: 30th Anniversary Edition” (R) -- Martin Scorsese has given us so many modern masterpieces, it’s impossible to say which of his films is the greatest. One contender would definitely be 1980’s “Raging Bull,” the biopic of tormented boxer Jake LaMotta, starring Robert De Niro (whose performance won him the Oscar for Best

Actor). The film, shot in black-and-white, is a rollercoaster of visual and emotional power, ranging from brutal and vulgar to operatic. The fight scenes are the best boxing sequences ever captured on film. The performances by De Niro, Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty are riveting. “Raging Bull” is as close to perfect as a movie can be. “Piranha” (R) -- If I had to describe this flick in two words, they’d be “Boobs” and “Blood.” The plot is as absurd as it is straightforward: Elizabeth Shue stars as the sheriff of a Spring Break party town who has to deal with a bunch of carnivorous monster fishies that are nom-nom-nomming on hot naked chicks and frat boys. Throw in some hilarious cameos by Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss, and you’ve got a wonderful guilty pleasure, a homage to the low-budget drive-in movie schlock of days past.

s you navigate the financial world, you’ll most likely deal with a wide array of investment choices, constantly changing tax laws, estate-planning issues and other areas. And then, to make things even more complex, you’ll have to consider your own risk tolerance, time horizon and individual goals. If you’re like most people, you don’t have the time and expertise to create, monitor and adjust your investment strategy by yourself, so you’ll need to get some help. Do you have experience working with people like me? Ideally, you’d like to work with someone who has experience in helping people like you — that is, people with similar income and asset levels, family situations, goals and so on. The more familiar a financial professional is with people like you, the better that person will be at helping you identify the appropriate investment moves. Do you have a particular investment philosophy? Look for someone with a thoughtful, reasoned philosophy on investing. As a general rule, be suspicious of anyone promising you big, quick gains. The best financial professionals seek to help their clients achieve positive long-term results through disciplined, persistent and sensible investment moves. How often will you communicate with me? If you’re going to entrust your hard-earned financial resourc-

es with someone, you’ll want that person to communicate with you regularly as to how you’re doing and what changes you may need to make. How often will you receive investment statements? How many times a year will you meet to review your progress? Can you have faceto-face consultations whenever you need them? These are the types of questions you’ll want to ask any prospective financial advisor. Will you be my primary contact? If you seek a one-on-one relationship with a financial professional, you’ll want that person to be your main contact, if not your exclusive one. You deserve the attention and expertise of a financial professional, so if you’re interviewing someone who seems as if he or she might try to “pass you along to subordinates in the office, keep looking. What services do you offer? If you want your financial professional to help you create a unified investment strategy, you’ll also want that person to help you implement it — which means he or she needs access to a full range of investment and money management products and services. How are you paid? Financial professionals are compensated in any of a number of ways. They may work on a fee-only basis, with the fee either agreed upon in advance or based on the level of assets under management. And some financial professionals work in a combined fee-andcommission arrangement. From an investor’s point of view, one method of compensation may not be “better than the others; nonetheless, it’s important for you to fully understand how your financial advisor will be paid. By doing your homework in advance, you can develop a solid relationship with a qualified financial professional — someone who will be with you far into the future. EMANCIPATION ITS NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS By Christopher C. Meyer © 2010

“Emancipation” refers to the removal of disabilities associated with childhood. Emancipation is not an all or nothing proposition. You can be emancipated for some purposes, but not for others: you can vote when you are eighteen; but you can’t drink alcohol until you are twenty-one. There is no set age of emancipation for any and all purposes. There is no specific lawsuit that you can file in Colorado to have a Court declare you emancipated. You have to file an action for declaratory judgment and request the relief you want the Court to grant. The issue of emancipation most often arises in the context of parents’ child support obligations - since this involves money! For child support purposes, once a child is emancipated, parents no longer have child support obligations to the child. Let’s look at what “emancipation” means for child support purposes.

In Colorado the age of emancipation is nineteen for child support purposes, but there are some uncommon exceptions: the parties may agree otherwise in a written stipulation; if a child is mentally or physically disabled the Court may order child support to continue; if the child is still in high school, child support continues until the end of the month following graduation, but not beyond age twenty-one; or if the child is “otherwise emancipated”. A child is “otherwise emancipated” if: she has entered the military; she is married; or she is living away from home, she is self-supporting, and it is not a temporary situation.

gible for child support if she is not yet nineteen. The law of emancipation is like any other law: you may not like it; you may not understand it; and you may not think it is fair, but it’s the law! ister, you might not be safe from a portable reader in the hands of a thief walking near you.

Recently, a television station demonstrated just how this works. New credit cards have RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification chips in them, which can be read by a scanner. (Technology and computer magazines and websites have been talking about this for years.) Major chain stores have been using RFID to scan inventory, and new passports carry a chip that includes all your information, including photo.

At this point, there hasn’t been a lot of theft reported, likely because people never know what happened. In a worst-case scenario, you live in a state that has the RFID chip in your driver’s license, which will provide your address. Add in a few credit-card numbers, and you could be well on your way to having your identity stolen.

In the case of your wallet, a thief carries a netbook computer with a small credit-card reader (available on the Internet). As he passes near you in a crowd, the scanner picks up your credit-card numbers and expiration dates. Then, with the press of a few buttons, those numbers can be sent elsewhere. Purchases could be made on your account before you even get home -- with your wallet intact and you none the wiser. Think how many cards could be scanned with one pass through a mall, subway or fair. Not all cards have RFID -- yet. If yours is the new type of credit or debit card that can pay for a transaction just by being waved near the reader at a reg-

For protection, there are special metal-lined wallets that block the signals from being read. These wallets are made of fancy leathers and are expensive. Still, many people will purchase one for the security it offers. On the other hand, to block the signal, there is always aluminum foil. SOCIAL SECURITY

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS GENERAL Question: I applied for my child's Social Security card in the hospital but have not received it. How long does it take? Answer: In most states it takes an average of three weeks to get the card, but in some states it can take longer. To check for the average wait time in your state, consult the chart at http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/ detail/a_id/74. If you have not received your child's card, and the time frame has expired, please visit your local Social Security office. Be sure to take proof of your child’s citizenship, age, and identity as well as proof of your own identity. And remember, we cannot divulge your child’s Social Security number over the phone. Learn more at www.socialsecurity.gov. Question: Is it illegal to laminate your Social Security card? Answer: No, it is not illegal, but we discourage it. It’s best not to laminate your card. Laminated cards make it difficult, sometimes even impossible, to detect important security features and an employer may refuse to accept them. The Social Security Act requires the Commissioner of Social Security to issue cards that cannot be counterfeited. We incorporate many features that protect the card’s integrity. They include highly specialized paper and printing techniques — some visible to the naked eye and some not. Keep your Social Security card in a safe place with your other important papers. Do not carry it with you. Learn more at www.socialsecurity.gov.

This is the starting point to request a review of our medical decision about your eligibility for disability benefits.
