ome Monday morning after Super Bowl Sunday, the talk around the water cooler won’t be all about quarterback sneaks, touchdowns and referee blunders. Nope. Instead, they’ll be talking about Budweiser, Pepsi and General Motors – and all the rest of the commercials, everyone arguing over which commercial they loved best. Throughout the years, the people behind those Super Bowl commercials have upped the ante on the ingenuity factor involved in creating ads. It’s a competition among the big corporations that rivals the football game. And the advertisers are paying a hefty price to be part of the dog-eat-dog market.

the voyeurs were all drinking Buds. • A couple of commercials by Go Daddy didn’t cross the finish line. This one ran, but some networks removed it from rotation. In 2005, Go Daddy created an ad that poked fun at Janet Jackson’s 2004 wardrobe malfunction. This ad featured a large-busted woman testifying before officials as a strap on her itty bitty top kept falling down.

Kansas City Chiefs in the first-ever Super Bowl, the cost of a 60-second ad sold for $75,000 to $85,000. When Super Bowl XLV rolls around Feb. 6, corporate giants like Coca-Cola and Doritos will pay about $3 million for a 30-second spot. According to Reuters, CBS has indicated that 90 percent of the ads have been sold.

• This 2007 ad by Snickers ran but was also yanked from rotation after gay and lesbian groups objected to it. In the ad, two men were working on a car engine when one pulls out a Snickers bar and begins to chomp away. His buddy starts chewing the other end of the Snickers and eventually their lips meet – duh? Realizing they just kissed, one of them said, “We have to do something manly.”

Sixty million viewers watched that first Super Bowl on television. In 2010, when the New Orleans Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl No. 44, 106 million people watched it on T.V. That number surpassed the 1983 finale of “M-A-S-H” and became the most-watched program in U.S. television history, according to Nielsen. Those stats have attracted all sorts of advertisers. Beer, sodas, snacks and cars dominated the advertising scene in the 1990s. In the beginning of the 21st century, the dot.com and high-tech companies took over the ad spots; however, it was short-lived when the dot. com bubble burst in March 2000.

• In 2004, this Super Bowl ad for the natural cold remedy company Airborne was pulled because of Mickey Rooney’s

bun. Envision 84-year-old Rooney in a crowded sauna. When someone sneezes, Rooney freaks out and runs out of the locker room, leaving his towel behind and his bottom bare. • This one ran in 2006 but was eventually pulled. Two friends were hanging outdoors; when one decided he was thirsty, he sent his dog to fetch a Bud Light out of the cooler. The conversation went something like this: “Think your dog could do that?” “Yea, he can do even better.” At that point, his dog attacks the guy holding the Bud, biting him in a sensitive area. During the attack, the Budweiser leaps in the air and lands in the hands of the friend. •Bud Light also ran a few ads featuring “Apology Bot 3000.” When the chef serves a table of people poison food, the robot appears to inform them of Superbowl Commercials... SACKED FROM THE SUPER BOWL The networks obviously have the option to turn away ads they feel are tasteless or considered risky business. There are ads that sprouted such a fuss they never made it to the screen. Check out the scripts of a few banned ads.

• PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) created an ad promoting vegetarianism. The ad featured scantily clad women “playing” with all sorts of vegetables in a suggestive way. • Bud Light apparently went a bit too far with this commercial. At a party, a couple had wandered out to the pool, and with no one around they decided to jump in sans clothes. As they’re about to engage in some fooling around, they realize the people gathered in one room of the house are viewing them underwater – the pool had been designed like an aquarium at Sea World. Of course,

TOUCHDOWNS The following ads were listed among ESPN viewers and Women’s Day Magazine favorites. In no particular order: • The now-famous phrase “where’s the beef” was introduced in this Wendy’s 1984 Super Bowl ad by character actress Clara Peller. Later, Wendy’s fired her for saying “I found it” during a Prego ad! • In 1987, Michael J. Fox played an eager-to-please neighbor when a young, gorgeous woman across the hall knocks on his apartment door, asking him if he has a diet Pepsi. After checking the refrigerator and realizing the Pepsi is gone, Fox jumps out his window, runs down the fire escape and across the tops of about five cars to a pop machine. He gets the Pepsi and sprints back. As he’s handing the Pepsi to the woman, her equally good-looking roommate walks in and says, “Got another one of those?” • In 1984, Apple introduced the Macintosh PC in a 60-second spot derived from George Orwell’s book “1984.” At the end of the commercial, a voiceover says, “On Jan. 24, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh, and you’ll see why 1984 won’t be like “1984.”

• Remember the 1995 Super Bowl ad from Budweiser featuring three frogs sitting on a lilly pad in the dark of the night? Each frog had a “croaking” line: “Bud,” “Weis” and “Er.” The camera eventually pans in to a bar-like building with the Budweiser name in lights.

• Bud also gained fame for the ad about Hank, the horse that didn’t make the cut for the Clydesdale team. A Dalmatian stepped in and “coached” Hank, running him through a series of training maneuvers … to the tune of the music from “Rocky.”

â&#x20AC;˘ In 2008, Bridgestone Corp. ran an ad that was pure hysteria â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or just plain hysterical. A squirrel is shown dashing into the street to fetch an acorn. As he calmly sits there, a car careens around the corner and the squirrel screams, followed by the screams of at least a half-dozen other wildlife creatures and the female passenger in the car. Everything calms when the carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tires bring it to a halt and prevent the squirrelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demise. But the ear-piercing screams had definitely caught the viewersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attention.

SHOULD HAVE BEEN BENCHED? Some of these ads fall under the controversial category and maybe should have been taken out of the game altogether. â&#x20AC;˘ A year after (1985) Apple introduced Macintosh, they introduced Macintosh Office featuring office workers jumping off a cliff to the tune of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heigh-Hoâ&#x20AC;? The ad was â&#x20AC;&#x153;morbid, dark and depressingâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the ad gurus hated it. Apple didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t advertise during the Super Bowl again until 1999. â&#x20AC;˘ Former Vice President Dan Quayle became the butt of many jokes for many reasons, one of them his inability to spell. In 1993, Frito-Lay gave Quayle a cameo role in a Lays potato chip commercial. In it, Quayle joked about incorrectly spelling potato. Many thought it was bad business to associate Quayle with any product.

â&#x20AC;˘ A Holiday Inn ad in 1997 featured a woman at a high school revealing she was now a man after a sex change operation. The sex change was likened to the Innâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent renovations. All kinds of groups, including media critics, lambasted the ad for stereotyping.

A Just for Feet ad showed a group of mercenaries in a Humvee chasing down a barefoot Kenyan running in Africa. When they caught him, they drugged him unconscious and forced a pair of running shoes on his feet. The ad was called racist and imperialist, and the company pulled the ads. Just for Feet filed a $10 million lawsuit against their advertising agency. Later that same year, Just for Feet ďŹ led for bankruptcy. Eventually, the lawsuit was dropped and Just for Feet sold its stores. The last store closed in 2004.

Critics called it a â&#x20AC;&#x153;disgusting example of sullying a brand.â&#x20AC;?

ccording to statistics, cancer seems to be increasing in our society. We hear of more women who have/had breast cancer, uterine cancer, and men who have/had testicular cancer, many people who have/had colon cancer, skin cancer, brain cancer, or lung cancer. As many are aware, the current acceptable treatment is radiation, chemotherapy, and sometimes removal of the diseased area, such as the breast or skin. Many organizations, that raise money, do desire a cure, but how many organizations are advocating prevention? First, one needs to look at the fact, that as a society, we are taught to be a victim/ passive and if we become ill, run to the nearest hospital/physician. We are not taught, as a whole, how to prevent DIS-EASE, other than eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; we are taught to treat the symptoms. It is very saddening to hear of people who have found they have cancer. Cancer can be a debilitating, frightening, and an exhausting disease. What is causing such an increase in cancer? Is it due to chemicals, happenstance, are we victims, or is it ‘punishment’? We first have to ask why; then we can search for answers. It is important to ask why for everything, not just this issue.

Whenever there is pain, ask WHY. According to CDC statistics from 2000 (published in 2003, www. wonder.cdc.gov) 28.7 (average) per 100,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2006, 119 (average) per 100,000 women (www.cdc.gov) were diagnosed with breast cancer. Even if some locations did not report their statistics in the 2003 report, the numbers are drastically different. Why? It is time to ask why. Tai Yi means supreme balance. When we are in balance, we heal. A person in balance asks questions, is proactive, carries a desire to increase his or her knowledge base, and puts it to use. How many foods are genetically modified of which we are not aware? How many hidden chemicals and hidden sugar are placed in processed foods? How much of our produce is heavily sprayed with toxic chemicals? How many toxins are in vaccinations (ﬂu/ H1N1 and inoculations) that are not discussed? It is not anyone’s place to TELL a person what to do regarding vaccinations and foods, but it is in our right to ask questions and expect answers. How many of the above toxins are linked to cancer, but it would cause a massive dent in profits if it were widely discussed? Is your health being jeopardized for the sake of money? Ask questions, be proactive, allow yourself to learn how to be in balance. Learn to live and love life in a healthy body and mind.

MUTTI’S WAR MoZaic Restaurant (main/upper level) in The Inn at Palmer Divid Mar. 18, 2011 Margaret Brettschneider, local author and speaker. Mutti’s War, based on the true story of Regina Wolff,a young German mother who was forced to smuggle her three small boys out of East Prussia when the Russians surround it in 1944, is in its fifth printing and is winner of the Paul Gillette Award for historical fiction. This book was also chosen for a literature class taught at the United States Air Force Academy. It is used to impress on cadets that there are many different kinds of courage. The author taught literature and journalism for thirty years, twenty-one of them in Germany for the Department of Defense, with seven of those years on the east/west communist border during the Cold War. She retired in Colorado Springs in 1995. Under pressure from her former high school students, she began writing of these experiences, and five books have resulted under her pen name, M.J. • On Feb. 6, 1820, the first organized immigration of freed slaves from the United States departs New York harbor on a journey to West Africa. The immigration was largely the work of the American Colonization Society. a deflated balloon at its tip is inched through the artery to the point of obstruction. When that’s reached, the doctor inflates the balloon to squash the obstruction. The population of your city is 50,000. I am sure many competent doctors there are versed in this procedure and can treat PAD as well as it can be treated anywhere. Ask your family doctor for a name.

LEG PAIN OFTEN DUE TO CLOGGED ARTERIES DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What can you tell me about peripheral artery disease in my legs? How about the ballooning of those clogged arteries? Where is a good place to go for that procedure? -- E.K. ANSWER: Activity causes chest pain in people with clogged heart arteries. It causes leg pain for people with clogged leg arteries -- peripheral artery disease. Angina is the chest pain of heart artery clogging; intermittent claudication is the leg pain that comes from clogged leg arteries. The obstructed arteries can’t deliver enough blood to leg muscles when a person walks. The leg muscles signal they’re being shortchanged in their blood supply by rebelling with pain. The pain can occur anywhere in the legs. If the blockage is high up, then thigh pain is the result. If a bit lower down, it’s calf pain. Lower down even more produces foot pain. “Intermittent” indicates that the pain leaves when the person rests. Diabetes, cigarette smoking, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol are some of the things that lead to artery clogging. Aging is, perhaps, the biggest contributor to it. About 17 percent of men and women older than 65 have this problem. A doctor confirms the diagnosis by measuring blood pressure at the ankle and comparing it with blood pressure in the arm. The two readings should be about equal. If the ankle blood pressure is much lower, it indicates that there’s an obstruction in the leg arteries. Treatment involves a diet that reduces the amount of fat and cholesterol; it’s essentially a diet of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, with less red meat and more fish. Although walking brings on pain, walking is a treatment, too. The person walks to the point of pain, rests and then resumes walking. Medicines like aspirin, Plavix and Pletal can be beneficial. You ask about the balloon treatment. It’s the same kind of procedure used to open clogged heart arteries. A slender tube with

ver the holidays, I replaced my beloved but broken slow cooker with a newer model. A slow cooker is a great tool for planning meals. The word “planning” becomes extremely important in tough economic times. Planning can help us save time, money and frustration. This is especially true as it relates to your food dollars. Here are some tips to help you plan your food budget, along with a great slow-cooker recipe to help you stretch your food dollars and save time. 1. Figure out how many dollars you have to spend on food each week. Once you know what your food budget is, be determined NOT to spend more than that amount. If you cannot feed yourself/family on this amount, find out what outside resources are available that can help you stretch your food dollars. 2. Make a menu plan for the week. This is time well-spent,

New DVD Releases for Week of January 31, 2011 PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Alice in Wonderland (60th Anniversary Edition)” (G) -- Disney’s 1951 take on Lewis Carroll’s trippy classic wasn’t one of Walt’s favorite productions, but it’s still a pretty fun little ﬁlm and worth having in your Disney collection. This 60th anniversary release is a bit of a mixed bag. It’s a Blu-Ray/DVD combo, so on the upside, you get an awesome high-def picture/sound mix, and loads of new spe-

cial features featuring Kathryn Beaumont, the voice of Alice -- if you have a Blu-Ray player. For DVD owners, there’s nothing new here if you already own Disney’s previous DVD release of the ﬁlm. So, take that into consideration before buying. “Let Me In” (R) -- Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl from “Kick-Ass”) stars as a preteen vampire in this American remake of the cult Swedish original “Let the Right One In.” The story revolves around a boy named Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee), whose parents are divorcing and who constantly gets picked on at school. He befriends a girl named Abby, who just moved in next door. Little does Owen suspect that Abby is a vampire, and the man claiming to be her father goes out every night killing people to bring back their blood to feed the girl. “Never Let Me Go” (R) -- Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garﬁeld star in this poignant and chilling love story set

in a dystopian world where people live into their 100s thanks to the organ farming of their clones. It’s kind of like the premise of “The Island” -- only without the explosions and Scarlett Johansson prancing around in a skin-tight cat suit. The ﬁlm, based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro (“The Remains of the Day”), follows the lives of three clones from their sheltered childhood at an English boarding school, up until young adulthood, where they learn they are meant to be harvested for their organs. When they learn of their fate, the three use what little time left to them to embrace life and love. “Time Bandits” (PG) -- Most fairy tales end with the hero living happily ever after, not watching his parents explode into a bajillion chunks because they touched Pure Evil; but when the fairy tale comes from the twisted mind of writer/director Terry Gilliam (“Brazil,” “12 Monkeys”) that’s pretty

much par for the course. This 1981 classic children’s movie features a star-studded cast, including John Cleese, Sean Connery, Ian Holm and David Warner (to name but a few). The story is about a little boy named Kevin who is whisked away on a whimsical adventure by a band of Little People on a mission to steal artifacts from various historical ﬁgures. Along the way they must avoid not only Evil Himself, but also The Supreme Being. The result is a hilarious (and surprisingly educational) romp through time and space.

ast week we discussed the first step in starting your own business – “creating” the business. The next step is to further ensure that the business you created is its own separate being – opening various types of banking, financial, or tax accounts for your business. The first type of account every business will need is a banking account in the name of the business itself, identified with the business’ federal taxpayer/employer identiﬁcation number. Even if you are a sole proprietor, you should still maintain a separate account for the business, and SHOULD NOT USE YOUR PERSONAL ACCOUNT. There are several reasons for keeping your business’ account separate from your personal account. The first, and most important, applies to businesses that are limited liability entities. If the business entity does not have its own separate banking account, you will most certainly lose the protection against personal liability for the debts of liabilities of the business, and place your personal assets, and those of your spouse, at risk. What protects limited liability entity business owners against personal liability for the acts, omissions, debts, etc. of their business is the legal fiction that the entity is a separate legal person, liable for itself. If you do not treat the entity as a separate legal person, neither will a court: the court will “pierce the corporate veil”, treat the entity as your alter ego, and impose full personal liability for that entity upon you. The number one factor courts look to, in order to determine whether the entity is merely your alter ego, is whether you maintained separate banking accounts for the entity; the second factor is whether you then commingled personal and business funds and expenses in either or all of your business and personal accounts. If you are a sole proprietor, many if not all banks will permit you to use your personal account for business, so long as you attach the trade name of your business to the account. DON’T BE TEMPTED TO DO SO. Yes, it is cheaper to maintain one account. But it is not worth the

legal exposure. It is important to remember that bankers know banking; they usually do not know the intricacies of corporate law. The second reason for establishing and maintaining separate banking accounts for your business is tax-related. If your business is a limited liability entity, the IRS’ current “check the box” regulations permit you to choose to have your business’ income taxed as a “small business corporation” (of “S” corporation), regardless of whether your entity is a corporation, or is a limited liability company, for example. By choosing to be taxed as a small business corporation, you can limit the amount of your income upon which FICA taxes are levied, for example, by designating only some of what you are paid from the business as salary (and the remainder as shareholder distributions). If all of the business’ income is dumping into your personal bank account, however, it may all be deemed to be income for FICA purposes. The third reason for establishing and maintaining separate banking accounts for your business is a practical one – it greatly simplifies your bookkeeping and accounting procedures. You will know that all transactions within that business banking account are business related, and will not have to break out business from personal. This may not seem like a big deal when you first start out, and there is little business activity, but if your business beats the odds and survives, it will quickly become a very big deal. A fourth reason for establishing and maintaining separate banking accounts for your business may seem like a superficial one, but it is one which carries great weight with potential clients/customers of your business. When clients or customers wish to pay you by check, it does not appear very professional to request that the check be made

Use a stick of lighted incense to check for leaks around windows and doors. Although you can’t caulk outside while the temperatures are so low, windows can be caulked on the inside. Then install clear plastic insulating film. If your sill is deep enough, two layers 2 inches apart will give even better coverage against drafts. Invest in thick thermal drapes. Open them on the sunny side of the house during the day and close them once the sun goes down. They’ll help keep out heat in the summer, too.

ow that we’re halfway through winter, how are the drafts in your house? For all the winterizing we do in the fall, it sometimes can take a good blast of frigid air to see where the leaks really are.

Uncarpeted floors can be chilly, especially if you have small children who run around in bare feet or who play on the floor. If you have wood, laminate or ceramic floors, consider getting a few inexpensive 5-by-8-foot carpets from a big-box store. A dark carpet that collects heat from the sun all day will add warmth to the house and also provide insulation. They can be rolled up and put under a bed during warm weather. If you have an attic with insulation, measure how much is there. Get a free energy audit or take a sample to the hardware store and get advice on how much of what kind to put down. payable to you personally, rather than to the name of the business. When you are paying bills from your vendors or suppliers, a check drawn on a personal account does not appear very professional. This can give the appearance that you may be a “fly-by-night” operation. Opening a business banking account is fairly simple. If your business is a limited liability entity, most banks require that you provide a copy of the e-file stamped articles that created the entity with the Secretary of State’s office, and a copy of the IRS confirmation letter of issuance of the business’ taxpayer/employer identification number. You will also need to provide your photo identification and social security number. The bank itself usually provides form corporate resolutions for you to sign, authorizing your entity to open the account on the business’ behalf. If your business is a sole proprietorship, which does business under a name other than your personal name (i.e., “Brown’s Painting” rather than “Bill Brown”), you will need to give the bank a copy of the e-file stamped Registration of Trade Name filed with the Secretary of State’s Ofﬁce (more on this registration next week), as well as the personal documents described above. Get references from whomever you decide to hire to do the job. Is cold air coming through your bedroom walls? It’s possible, especially on the north side of your house that never gets the sun. One way to block the cold is to hang a tapestry on the wall behind the head of your bed. Check unused electrical plugs on exterior walls: Do you feel a cold draft on windy days? Invest in those plastic plug covers. A final note: Change your air filter, even if you did that in the fall.

hroughout the week, you’ll hear a lot of talk about the “big game”. Super Bowl Sunday has become something of a holiday in America, and it’s one of my favorites. But while we hear about Big Ben’s redemption, an emerging elite quarterback in Green Bay, and two very popular, much storied franchises going head to head in the biggest game of the year, let’s take a moment to remember where they all came from. Yes, once upon a time, the athletes set to take the stage on televisions highest rated program this Sunday, started out as young athletes, just keeping a hobby, by playing a little High School ball.

ONE WIN AT A TIME (AND VERY FEW LOSSES) -One must wonder how these SouthernColorado-bred teens got so good at swimming. While Lewis-Palmer’s boys have won the State Swimming title two consecutive years, the Girls have been completely ignored; but they ‘aint to bad themselves. In 8 meets, the Girls have taken 1st place six times, and the other two, finished a close 2nd. -Lewis-Palmer had a good basketball team in 2010. This year, they potentially have a great one. Standing at 12-2, and rated as the #1 4A team in Massey’s State Rankings, Lewis-Palmer has legitimate hopes to beat last seasons 21-6 record, and is a shoe-in for the playoffs (knock on wood) -Over in ‘Bear World’, Palmer Ridge has itself a couple of good basketball programs as well. The Boys hold an 8-4 record, and like to keep it exciting, as seven of its twelve games have been decided by four-points or less. On the other side of the chromosomeladder, and not to be outdone, the Girls are 9-4. Makes you wonder if these two should duke it out in an impromptu school assembly. Of course the Boys would have the odds in Vegas, for height purposes, but the Girls do come in with more wins, and the strategic advantage of refusing prom dates for every boy that makes a basket… -In recent weeks, we’ve all been victimized by icy roads. If only our motor vehicles could glide like Rangers; without the bashing each other into walls, of course. Lewis-Palmer (in a dubious alliance with Palmer Ridge athletes) is taking the 5A Hockey division by storm… again. Last years State Champions are 8-1, and obliterating inferior teams at their will. Quite dramatically, however, their only shortcoming comes in an early season December loss to Ralston Valley; the same Ralston Valley that fell to the Rangers in a one-point loss in the State Finals last year. Looks like someone’s come for revenge. We’ll expect to see these two meet again in

the post-season, in a grudge match for the ages; or at least for 2011.

But he plays like he’s priming for March Madness. He currently leads the Lewis-Palmer basketball team in points (312), steals (33), and blocks (56). The latter category he led in last year as well, the difference being that in half of a season, he has already eclipsed 2010’s season total (41 blocks).

-Karin Roh likes to swim. So much that she decided to do it on a regular basis for her school, Lewis-Palmer. She now leads the team in four races, the 500, 200, 100, and 50-yard freestyle. -Ali Meyer is young, a freshman indeed. Yet, she waltzed on to the Palmer Ridge Varsity Girls Basketball team. Yes, that is impressive. So what happened next is shocking and extraordinary; she now leads the 9-4 team in assists (13), steals (20), and blocks (5). Having teammate Jordan Bryant, the teams point’s leader (113), doesn’t hurt either. Together, they will wander into the wild of the Girls Basketball jungle, and hope to come out the most accomplished of all hunters; those who seek to find and conquer a State Title.
