HEY, CHECK OUT THOSE DUST BUNNIES! If you turned your keyboard upside down and the makings of a meal fell out or the vents on your computer’s CPU are covered in dust, it might be time to clean the computer and its components. All those dust bunnies can cause overheating and computer malfunction. The logical place to start is with your manufacturer’s instructions because some will void warranty coverage if you open up the back panel of your computer.

Next, gather together a dust free cloth, screwdriver, rubbing alcohol, compressed air (cans available for purchase at office supply stores), cotton swabs and water. Turn the computer off, unplug it and get ready to make it shine. For a desktop system, look at the back panel to find either knobs to turn or buttons to press to release the side panel. In some cases, you may need a screwdriver.

Continued from Page 2 Mouse First, disconnect the mouse from the computer and then use a towel moistened with rubbing alcohol to wipe the exterior surface. If you have a mechanical mouse, remove the cover. Remove the track ball and wash with water and air dry before replacing. Use the same cotton swab procedure to wipe down the inside components of the mouse before drying and replacing the cover. Monitor For one of those dinosaur CRT monitors that look like a TV, use regular glass cleaning solution, but nothing that includes alcohol or ammonia which can damage the screen. There is nothing to open here and any attempt at opening up a monitor may cause severe damage. For LCD’s and flat-panel monitors, use a water moistened lint-free cloth to wipe the screen gently. Never spray anything directly onto one of these screens. Check the manufacturer’s suggestions if this doesn’t get it clean enough.

FEELING A LITTLE SLUGGISH? If your computer is dragging, then it’s time for an internal cleanup. This is the easy stuff to do. If you have Windows XP or a newer operating system, there are several utilities available to do the job. Microsoft recommends performing these cleanup utilities about once every month.

While browsing the Internet, the computer takes on hundreds or even thousands of temporary files. These are great for getting those Web sites to load quickly, but clutters up the hard drive. To clean them up, run Disc Cleanup.

Over time, everything you add to your computer is put into files that are added to and changed. The files then tend to break into “chunks” of data; hence, the term fragmentation. The computer runs slower because it has to search harder to find information. Using the Disc Defragmenter can take over an hour or so to run, but may well be worth the increased speed of the machine. Set this up when you know you won’t need to use the computer for awhile.

TAKE OUT THE TRASH When you put files into the Recycle Bin, they stay there until you empty it out just in case you change your mind. These files take up a lot of space and should be emptied periodically.

Then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a snap to select files to move. This frees up more disc space and eliminates the clutter that you wade through every time you try to find a file.

BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever had a computer hard drive crash and lost all of your files, you understand the importance of backing up. There are inexpensive software programs that can do this for you as frequently as you wish â&#x20AC;&#x201C; daily, weekly or monthly depending on how many files you generate. If or when the dreaded crash happens, you are up and running once again with a minimal amount of pain and anguish.

WHATâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S LEFT? Now for that dreaded organization part. Think of your computer like a file cabinet. In a file cabinet important documents likely get put into a folder and appropriately labeled. Same thing here, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even quicker. Depending upon how many files you might have waiting for a real home, this might take a couple of 30-minute sessions to complete. First, look at the files: â&#x20AC;˘ Right click on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Startâ&#x20AC;? button

Many times, Lupus is not diagnosed correctly at first, which leaves the person in significant pain without a solid reason as to why. The immune system attacks what it sees as a threat. The body has the ability to heal itself when the correct tools are utilized, the correct questions are asked, and correct conclusions are drawn and put into action. We, as a society, are taught to treat symptoms rather than search for a cause which would lead to a cure. How long have different people searched for cancer cures, AIDS cures, Diabetes cures, Autism cures, and other ailments that are increasing? How many cures have been found vs. how many diseases

LEWIS-PALMER LEADS REGION FOR COLLEGE PREPAREDNESS Monument, CO – In a new report released this week, Lewis-Palmer High School ranked highest among traditional high schools in Colorado for preparing students for higher education. The report cites the number of students who needed “remediation” in college, because they graduated from high school but did not have the basic skills they needed for college-level work in at least one subject.

Since the Easter Bunny's helpers hide them the morning of the hunt the town asks parents not to bring their kids to the event until the start time of 10 a.m. so as not to spoil the surprise of the location of the approximate 1,000 eggs. After the eggs are found, the games, including a gunny-sack race, begin and will be held outside if weather permits or inside the town hall. Students from Lewis-Palmer Middle School's National Junior Honors Society will help run the games. A bunny known to make appearances at Easter and hide eggs will appear in Palmer Lake during the festivities and just might hop on over to Monument afterward. Palmer Lake's festivities conclude around 11 a.m., just in time for Monument's to begin. Egg seekers will have a chance to bounce from shop to shop in downtown Monument to collect one egg at each location from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be coloring pages to be picked up in advance and dropped off the day of the hunt for a chance to win a prize.

PSORIASIS SOMETIMES MORE THAN SKIN DEEP DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Your article on arthritis was very interesting, but you did not explain about the arthritis that comes with psoriasis. I have it, and I know of two other people who have it. We don’t understand it at all. Please explain. -- B.E. ANSWER: Autoimmunity is the explanation for many illnesses, including both skin and joint psoriasis. “Autoimmunity” indicates that the immune system -- our protection against germ invasion and other harmful attacks -for reasons not yet understood, turns against our own bodies; in this case, it’s the skin and joints. The immune system targets joints in as many as 7 percent of those who suffer from skin psoriasis. That’s a considerable number of people when you consider that as many as 3 percent of the entire population suffers from skin psoriasis. Skin psoriasis precedes joint psoriasis most of the time, but there are instances when both occur simultaneously or when joint involvement appears before any skin manifestations. The fact that skin and joint psoriasis run in some families also points to a gene influence on these conditions. Any joint can be affected. The topmost finger joint, the one below the fingernail, is frequently targeted. Back, neck, knees, you name it -- psoriasis can strike it. Like all arthritic joints, psoriatic arthritic joints are swollen, red, tender and stiff. The severity of joint involvement doesn’t always mirror skin involvement, but it does correspond to nail changes. Nails have small pits, become loosened from their attachment to underlying skin, often turn yellow

A HEART-HEALTHY VALENTINE’S DAY

s chocolate a guilty treat or a great-tasting, heart-healthy indulgence? Do you use chocolate to boost your mood, or reserve it for special celebrations? Whatever your reason for choosing chocolate, emerging research is showing there may be some health benefits. Dark chocolate is a heart-healthy choice for Valentine’s Day. Blood pressure, cardiovascular health and insulin sensitivity have all been shown to profit from the flavonoids in the cocoa bean. Chocolate-milk drinkers in one study showed marked improvement in heart health, including a boost to the “good” HDL cholesterol. It’s notable that the chocolate milk consumed in this study was made with unsweetened cocoa powder (containing 82 percent cocoa) stirred into skim milk, as opposed to the highly processed and sweetened version typically found on supermarket shelves. Unsweetened cocoa and dark chocolate appear to be healthier choices than other kinds of chocolate. Other research suggests that eating chocolate makes us feel good -- something self-professed chocoholics already know. Chocolate may reduce stress and have other positive psychological effects. Chocolate also may be connected to neurotransmitters boosting mood and lowering anxiety. This research is still preliminary, so nutrition experts still don’t recommend eating chocolate for those health benefits, but the research is something chocolate lovers will watch. Not all chocolate is created equal: The higher the cocoa content, the greater the health benefits from flavonoids, which help protect against aging and some chronic diseases. Following unsweetened cocoa powder on the list for highest percentage of cocoa is unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate. Studies suggest that eating dark chocolate with 70 percent cocoa improves cardiovascular health. Semisweet chocolate and milk chocolate drop down further on the list for cocoa content. How much dark chocolate or unsweetened cocoa powder is the potential ticket to good health? None of the studies to date have determined the optimal daily serving. Many health experts are comfortable recommending daily dark chocolate in small amounts -- an ounce or two daily -- if it’s a food you already enjoy and can afford it in your calorie budget. As a final word of caution, check the ingredients on the label to see where sugar is listed. The further down the list the better, because that indicates a smaller amount of sugar in the product. Weigh the extra calories in chocolate before you spend them --

and then enjoy every morsel! My recipe for Dark Chocolate Delights are bonbons that are simple to make and the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for the health and happiness of the ones you love. Dates are a sweet and “delightful” ingredient in these dark chocolate bon bons. Dates are rich in calcium, sulfur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper and magnesium, which are all advantageous for health. Have a happy (and heart-healthy) Valentines Day! 1. Using a large bowl, combine peanut butter, pecans, powdered sugar, dates and 1 tablespoon butter and mix well. Form mixture into 1-inch balls. Set aside in refrigerator to harden, about 30 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, melt semisweet chips in a large glass measuring cup or medium bowl in the microwave on medium power (or on the defrost setting) about 2 minutes, stirring once, until melted and smooth. Stir in remaining dark chocolate chips and stir constantly until smooth (this tempers the chocolate, setting up crystals so it will harden). Stir in the remaining 1/2 tablespoon butter to bring chocolate to a glossy finish. 3. Dip each ball into melted chocolate mixture and set on wax paper or parchment paper. Sprinkle with coconut, if desired. Let stand until chocolate is ﬁrm, about 15 minutes. Store tightly covered at room temperature. Makes approximately 32 Bonbons.

“Waiting for Superman” (PG) -- In “Waiting for Superman,” Davis Guggenheim, director of “An Inconvenient Truth,” the Academy Award-winning documentary on climate change, turns his sights on America’s ailing education system. In this controversial documentary, Guggenheim suggests that one of the major problems with education today is teachers unions, which protect bad teachers all for the sake of perpetuating tenure agreements. He also is a proponent of the charter school system, which hasn’t been proven to be substantially better than public schools. The lottery system used to pick the students is absolutely soul-crushing to watch. While it’s clear that Guggenheim has an agenda, “Superman” isn’t one of those Michael Moore-style ﬁlms that are long on propagan-

e all want to enjoy a comfortable retirement. But to do so, we need to make different moves, and consider different issues, at different times of our lives. To help illustrate this point, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s look at three individuals: Alice, who is just starting her career; Bob, who is nearing retirement; and Charlie, who has recently retired. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s start with Alice. As a young worker, Alice most likely has four decades ahead of her until she retires. Yet she realizes that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never too soon to start saving for retirement, so she has already begun contributing to her 401(k) and to an IRA. And since she has so much time ahead of her, she has decided to invest aggressively, putting much of her contributions in growth-oriented vehicles. The market will certainly have its â&#x20AC;&#x153;dipsâ&#x20AC;? in the future, and Aliceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s account values could rise and fall from year to year, but the longer she holds her investments, the less of an impact that market extremes should have on her 401(k), IRA and other accounts. Now letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turn our attention to Bob. Since he is within a few years of retirement, he has some key decisions to make. For one thing, he must decide if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to change the investment mix in his IRA, 401(k) and other accounts. Because Bob doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have much time to overcome market volatility, and since

heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to maintain the gains he has already achieved, he may decide to become more conservative with his investments. Consequently, he may choose to move some of his investment dollars from stocks to bonds and other fixed-income securities. Realizing, however, that he may spend two or three decades in retirement, and knowing that he will need to stay ahead of inflation, he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t abandon all his growthoriented investments. Furthermore, Bob decides that he may need to bolster his retirement income, so he considers whether an annuity, which is designed to provide him with an income stream he canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t outlive, is appropriate for his situation. Our ďŹ nal â&#x20AC;&#x153;life stagesâ&#x20AC;? investor is Charlie. He has recently retired, so his biggest concern is making sure he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t outlive his financial resources. Therefore, he may need to consider a variety of moves. For starters, he should determine when to start taking Social Security and when to begin taking withdrawals from his IRA and 401(k) plans. [For a traditional IRA and a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan, Charlie, like all investors, must start taking withdrawals no later than age 70Â˝.] After deciding when to start taking withdrawals from his retirement plans, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also need to calculate how much he can afford to take each year without emptying the accounts. Finally, he might need to rebalance his overall investment portfolio to provide himself with more income. Basically, if your business has a permanent location – like a store, an office, a warehouse, or even your home – and conducts retail sales of goods (as opposed to services) from that location, you will need to apply to open a sales tax account with the State of Colorado Department of Revenue. If you conduct retail sales, but do not have a permanent location – for example, you sell goods at a fair or farmer’s market - you will also need to apply to open a sales tax account, collect sales tax, and report and forward the sales taxes to the government. You can open a sales tax account for your business either by mail, or in person, at any office of the Colorado Department of Revenue that handles that service. To open a sales tax account, go to the Colorado Department of Revenue website, www.colorado.gov/revenue. Click on the big “Taxes” icon, then click on the “Tax Forms” icon, then under “Forms”, click on “Sales”. Under “Tax Forms”, click on “Form” for “Business Application for Sales Tax/Wage Withholding Tax Account”. There is also an “FYI” you can click on for the Business Application as well. In addition, just below the “Business Application” form you can click on the Instructions for the application as well. Complete the form, and either mail it, or hand deliver it, to the Department of Revenue (if you hand deliver it, you will need to bring a copy as well as the original). Make sure you make and keep a copy for your records.

If you hand deliver the application, you will be able to be assigned your sales tax account number , although your license will be mailed to you (within 2 weeks); if you mail the application you will have to wait, for as long as 4-6 weeks, to receive both the account number and the license itself. There is an office in El Paso County, on North Union Boulevard in Colorado Springs. You will also need to pay a fee (refundable after – but only after – a certain amount of sales tax is collected). If your business conducts retail sales from a fixed, or permanent, location only, you will apply for a “standard” sales tax license; if some or all of your business’ sales are at “events”, such as farmer’s markets, etc., you will apply for a “Special Events” sales tax license, which may be a single event or multiple event license.

The amount of sales tax you will be required to collect depends upon the geographic location where the goods you are selling are delivered to the customer (usually at your permanent location). The state sales tax rate is currently 2.9%; the El Paso County sales tax rate is currently 1%. The City of Colorado Springs has its own sales tax, which it collects itself and is not collected through the state department of revenue (although the Town of Monument’s sales tax is). There are also sales taxes for various regional transportation authorities, special districts, etc. After you have your sales tax account number, you can use an online system to look up the tax rate your parIMPORTANT: YOU WILL NEED A FEDERAL TAXticular business needs to charge, at www.taxview.state.

But behind those reasons also is the flickering hope that a very valuable stamp will be found, perhaps attached to an envelope in an attic or on a postcard in a flea market.

There are numerous ways to start, the easiest being with mail you receive. However, gone are the days of receiving many handwritten letters with interesting stamps on them. Instead, join companies that send you samples -- you pay for only the ones you keep. Join an international postcard or pen pal club. Go to stamp shows or join a local club. Decide if there’s an area you’d like to concentrate on, perhaps U.S. Airmail, or commemorative stamps from the 1940s, or Paciﬁc Island stamps. Thumb through stamp catalogs to see what catches your eye -- and let the hunt begin. Coins: Try not to spend more than the face value of the coin, especially while you’re beginning your collection. That way, if necessary, your coins can be spent. As with stamps, look through catalogs and see what types of coins most appeal to you.

How frequently you must file sales tax returns depends upon the dollar volume of the sales of your business. If your business’ sales volume is less than $10,000 per month, you may file quarterly; greater than that amount, you must file monthly returns. If, after a year, your sales volume is less than $15 per month, you can request permission to file only annually. After you have opened your sales tax account, the Department of Revenue will mail you a coupon book to use to report and pay sales tax. This all may seem very complicated, but if you use a point of sale software program, the program can calculate and generate the reports you need very easily. There are very substantial penalties and interest for failure to collect, report, or pay sales taxes. I have seen many businesses go out of business because they failed to do so, and the “Taxman” caught up with them. Don’t risk it – it’s not worth it! If your business has an accountant or bookkeeper, they can help you with this process. Books: Begin with your favorite author and aim to collect all of them. Explore reissues of authors who have passed away. Obviously they won’t be writing more books. Sometimes there are no reissues, and the only available copies are what’s already out there. Hunt at flea markets, yard sales and on the Internet for copies to fill in your collection. Books, especially if you’re going to end up trading or selling them, can be tricky. Study book grading so you don’t overspend. The key when starting a new hobby or collection is to not break the budget. Put a monthly limit on just how much you’re willing to spend to add to your collection, and don’t go over that amount. Assume that you won’t make huge profits from your collection if you sell. The best benefit might be in the enjoyment of the hunt. ome odd years ago, a 14 year old girl was won over on joining a youth bowling league. She swung the doors to the alley open, flourishing her blonde hair in the warm summer breeze, and there, on lackluster lane 4, was a boy. He was also in the bowling league, go figure, and had wonderful taste in sports teams. Then the windows shattered and the alley air tinted red. The sound of heartbeats and heaven consumed the ears of the youth. Love blossomed that day and never looked back. This is a true, perhaps slightly exaggerated, story. In fact, it’s the story of Pinz co-owner Gloria McCartan, who met her husband at a Bowling Alley. Pinz Bowling Center is now giving you a similar, albeit very different, opportunity. The time to celebrate your love has come. Valentines Day is upon us; and the mushy, sometimes pushy, holiday must be noteworthy. It’s also a proven love potion. “I would probably be single with no children if I didn’t join that Youth Bowling League” says McCartan (or, at least, I think that’s what she said). It’s also a great stimulus for those celebrating S.A.D. (Singles Awareness Day) on the 14th; you never know who you’ll meet.
